Taylor Swift once said: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

That’s true for the thousands of Swifties heading to Soldier Field for her three-night stint at the stadium this weekend. With preparations for NASCAR underway and other events happening downtown, traveling to Soldier Field will require some thinking ahead.

Here’s how to get “...Ready for It?”

Taking the CTA

The city is planning to increase Red Line service and No. 146 bus service during the shows, according to Soldier Field.

The closest L stop to Soldier Field is the Roosevelt Red Line stop , which is about a 20-minute walk from the stadium. The No. 146 bus stops at the Museum Campus , which is just a few steps from Soldier Field.

All Soldier Field parking is sold out, according to the stadium. For fans who did purchase parking at the stadium, the lots will open at 2 p.m.

Additional parking will be available at the McCormick Place parking lots (2301 S. King Drive), and shuttles will be operating from the Millennium Park Garages to Soldier Field.

For those using ride-hailing services, Columbus Drive will be closed between Roosevelt Road and Balbo Drive as a pickup and drop-off area before and after the concert, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Soldier Field follows the NFL All-Clear Bag Policy. In order to bring a bag in, it must fall into one of these categories:

• Clear plastic and under 12”x6”x12”
• A 1-gallon clear plastic freezer bag
• A small clutch bag (4 1 ⁄ 2 ” x 6 1 ⁄ 2 ” or smaller), that can fit inside a clear plastic bag

Fanny packs, backpacks, briefcases and diaper bags aren’t allowed.

Securing merchandise

Soldier Field will open some merchandise stands ahead of time, so fans can get their hands on Taylor Swift gear before the show. The early merchandise locations are at the Stadium Green, outside gates three and four, and along the sidewalk north of the Waldron Deck.

Here are the early merchandise hours, according to Soldier Field:

• 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
• Noon until the end of the show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There have been some fans, the unlucky ones who weren’t able to get tickets, who are looking to gather outside Soldier Field this weekend. The stadium says fans without tickets are “strongly discouraged” from gathering outside the stadium.

Taylor Swift fans swarm Soldier Field for 1st Eras Tour performance in Chicago

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The first of three sold-out Taylor Swift concerts was held at Soldier Field Friday night, part of a three-show stop on her Eras Tour.

"Since like two in the morning. Why? Because we wanted to be first," said Shona and Lorna Garcia, who lined up in the wee early morning hours.

Big crowds are expected all weekend long for one of the most-anticipated musical events of 2023. About 55,000 people are expected to attend each night.

Lynn is choosing to be a bit incognito on Friday night because, she said, her dad doesn't know she scored a ticket last night.

"I'm wearing a 'Red' outfit that she actually wore in her concert," Lynn said. "Dad, I love you. Please don't kill me. This was a graduation present."

One mother-daughter duo from Arizona has been bonding over Taylor Swift and her inspirational music for years.

"I was with her for reputation so it's really, to me, it's special part of life," said Nicole and Karley Sweer. "I've loved Taylor Swift for as long as I can remember, and this is like, the first musical artist I kind of loved."

The concrete walls of the football stadium were no match for the sound of excitement in the air, especially at the very moment Swift took the stage.

"I'm just so excited to be around everyone else. This has just been years in the making," said Kristina Johnson.

In fact, it's been nearly five years since Swift toured.

The excitement surrounding the shows really began on Thursday, as even more Swifties were lined up to buy merchandise ahead of this weekend. Most are after a coveted crewneck fans say are only sold at her concerts.

"It's because a lot of it is not going to be online and I feel like the blue crewneck everybody's going crazy for," said Angelica Tenuta and Emily Kriska, who live in Kenosha.

ABC7 spoke with people who had been camped out since 2 a.m. and don't even have tickets.

"I did not get tickets yet, it's actually very sad. If I can't get tickets, I'm going to get merch, because the tickets, right now, are really expensive, so I'm like, I'll just get merch instead," said Miroslav Uzelac, who lives in Skokie. "I love Taylor Swift. Laughs. I think I have a bit too much of her obsession with her."

They're hoping for some T-Swift luck to snag some.

"I just need two tickets. So, if someone has extra tickets, let me know, please," said Kedzie O'Malley, who lives in Orland Park.

If you're lucky enough to have tickets, there will be shuttle buses from the Millennium Park Garage. People can also get dropped off at the 18th Drive turn-around, just west of DuSable Lakeshore Drive.

Pick-ups will be along Columbus Drive between Balbo and Roosevelt. Parking passes are already sold out.

"We are going to be in the nosebleeds, but it's OK, wherever we are. It's worth it. It is it's so worth it," said Aubrey Tabler and Jslyn Peck, who are from Mishawaka.

The parking lots opened up at 2 p.m. to concertgoers. Gates opened at 4:30 p.m.

"I'm so excited to scream all the songs. And all the chants, we learned all of the chants," said Lucianna Cardamone and Brooklynn Jack, who live in Norridge. "We finally got tickets last-minute, so we're excited."

The merch tents opened at noon.

The Friday and Saturday concerts start at 6:30 p.m. with openers Owenn and Girl in Red. Taylor is expected to go on at 8.

The Sunday show starts at the same time with openers MUNA and Gracie Abrams. Swift will come on stage around 8 p.m. and play a three-hour set.

Soldier Field in Chicago has a long history as the lair of the Chicago Bears. Since 1971, the Bears have filled the stadium with cheering fans, making it difficult to find Soldier Field parking on the best of days, but this multi-purpose stadium has also seen artists such as U2, Coldplay, Guns N' Roses, The Grateful Dead, and Beyonce dominate the field on a regular basis.

When it opened in 1924, Soldier Field's first incarnation had a style that harkened back to the amphitheatres and coliseums of Ancient Greece and Rome, with Doric columns at the entrance. The name Solider Field was dedicated during the 1926 Army vs Navy game as a memorial to US Soldiers who have given their lives in combat. It was renovated in 2003, despite criticism from landmark preservation groups. This renovation modernized the stadium for the twenty-first century, but it polarized fans and the public about the so-called “Spaceship on Soldier Field,” and lost Soldier Field its designation as a National Historic Landmark.

Hopefully you've got that, too -- because those items are about all you can bring inside Soldier Field.

Beginning Friday, Taylor Swift's "The Eras Tour" will take over Soldier Field in Chicago for three nights. The sold-out shows have been dubbed by the stadium as one of the "most anticipated musical events of 2023."

"The final countdown to Taylor Swift’s 3-night foray at Soldier Field is finally upon us," Stadium Manager ASM Global said in a press release Wednesday. "Taylor's live shows are renowned worldwide for bringing her music to life."

The show is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m., with openers OWEN and Girl in Red Friday and Saturday, and Grace Adams and Muna Sunday, Soldier Field says. Swift will take the stage around 8 p.m., with a set that lasts for at least three hours.

And according to the stadium, you're going to want to pack light.

What can you bring in to soldier field.

Soldier Field adheres to the NFL bag policy, which limits the size and type of bags that are allowed into stadiums, the press release says.

Only bags that are "clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12," the NFL says . "No buckles, grommets/hardware or décor can be concealing any part of the bag."

In other words: The bag must literally be all clear .

According to Soldier Field, the following bags are also approved for use:

• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (Ziploc bag or similar)
• Small clutch bags, which cannot exceed 4.5" x 6.5" in size, with or without a handle or strap can be taken into the stadium with one of the clear plastic bags

"Prohibited items include, but are not limited to: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage of any kind, computer bags and camera bags or any bag larger than the permissible size," the stadium says .

Diapers must be carried in a clear bag, Soldier Field says, adding that "Medical Bags or kits are acceptable and will be searched at the gate."

The good news is, there's a poster-sized silver lining.

"Posters are allowed but cannot exceed 24"x24,"" the release adds.

Here's a breakdown of what else to know if you're headed to Soldier Field on night one, two or three.

Each night of Swift's three-night Soldier Field residency is sold out, the stadium says. According to Soldier Field officials, the stadium currently holds 63,500 people. And though it's the smallest NFL stadium in the nation, it's significantly bigger than Chicago's other large venues.

For example, Wrigley Field, where Bruce Springsteen, Dead & Company and Fall Out Boy are playing later this summer, has a capacity of 41,649. The United Center, where Aerosmith is set to play in September, holds 23,500.

However you slice it -- the show, and the area near the stadium, are expected to be packed.

There certainly will be.

"Guests may experience heavy traffic at certain times," Soldier Field says. Additionally, several construction projects in and out of Chicago may cause additional backups and delays, including the Kennedy Expressway construction as well as ongoing resurfacing and lane closures along DuSable Lake Shore Drive .

Drop Off and Pick Up

There will be designated drop-off and pick-up locations for parents and chaperones coming to the stadium, Soldier Field notes. Here's a breakdown:

Those attending the show can be dropped off at the 18th Drive Turnaround, just west of Lake Shore Drive's 18th Drive exit ramp. However, due to heavy traffic, officials suggest dropping fans off at Columbus Drive or Michigan Avenue and then having them walking to the museum campus.

For pick-up after the show, officials say reunification for parents, guardians and rideshare drivers will take place on Columbus Drive between Roosevelt and Balbo, beginning at 10:30 p.m.

"We encourage parents and chaperones to use this area in order to quickly reunite with family and friends," Soldier Field's release states. "Drivers may use the alphabetical signage markers to provide guests with identifiers. Stadium security and parking personnel will be present to provide a safe and organized operation."

Additionally, stadium security will be onsite to "provide a safe and organized operation."

Both Soldier Field and city officials are "strongly" encouraging ticket holders to use public transportation, and to arrive early.

When Do Gates, Parking Lots Open?

Each day of the show, merchandise sales outside the stadium will begin at 12 p.m. in four locations, Soldier Field says. Parking lots open at 2 p.m., and show gates open at 4:30 p.m.

If you didn't already buy a parking spot at Soldier Field for the show, you're out of luck.

"Parking lots are currently sold out from the advance sales of parking," Soldier Field says. However, some lots nearby may have spots available.

McCormick Place Lot B, Millennium and South Grant Park garages will be open, with Millennium Park Garage offering a shuttle to and from the stadium. The shuttle will pick up fans at lower Randolph and pick them up at the Metra 18th stairs between 4 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Grant Park South, Grant Park North and Millennium Lakeside Garages won't be offering shuttle service, however.

Don't Have a Ticket?

Buyer beware, the Better Business Bureau says.

While many tickets offered for sold-out shows like Swift's may be legitimate, others are not, BBB president and CEO Steve J. Bernas warns .

"One of the first things to do in advance is to be on the lookout for fake websites, tickets, and merchandise," Bernas says. "You don’t want to show up at the gate after waiting months and paying hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars only to find out your ticket is fake."

Make sure you're buying from a verified seller, and use your credit card for any purchases, as it offers the best fraud protection of any payment method.

"There are countless ways for consumers to find tickets online, with online marketplaces, ticket sellers, resellers, and unfortunately, some are rip-offs," Bernas adds.

According to Bernas, buyers should use "extra caution" when buying tickets sold on online marketplace platforms like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.

"Buying tickets on these sites from people you do not know is similar to buying tickets in a dark alley," Bernas said. "Scammers are skilled at providing realistic tickets and fake receipts."

Additionally, Soldier Field is asking those without tickets to refrain from coming to the stadium.

"People without tickets are strongly discouraged from coming to the Soldier Field campus," Soldier Field's release states. "No part of the show will be visible and stadium acoustics do not provide any audible quality outside of it."

Will Celebrities Will Be There?

While Hollywood stars, athletes and musicians have been spotted at Swift's previous shows on the tour , it remains to be seen who might make an appearance at the upcoming Chicago shows.

Some good news, though: one who may not be welcome at Soldier Field already took in a show his new home stadium in Foxborough, New Jersey .
