Great singles cruises to book and meet fascinating people

Melinda Crow

Start humming the theme song to "The Love Boat" because we're going to do a deep dive into how to find the perfect singles cruises to book if you want to meet people.

Is it possible to meet your forever match on a cruise ship? Absolutely.

An editor I once knew found her true love on an expedition-style cruise. They married within months of returning home and now have two children. Whether it was the thrill of the expedition, the forced digital detox of a remote destination or the close quarters of a small ship, their relationship clearly blossomed on board.

Cruise ships offer a unique way to meet new and often fascinating people, whether you're looking for romance or simply want to enjoy the company of other people vacationing the same way you do.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

There are single cruisers on almost every ship. Some sail solo; others are in friend or family groups. Dining arrangements, onboard activities and port tours make meeting like-minded people easy. Also, it's socially acceptable to strike up conversations with others throughout the ship.

Some cruise lines make it even easier for singles to find each other with solo cabins clustered together and scheduled events for singles.

If you'd like to find companionship at sea, here are our top tips for making the most of a singles cruise.

Tips for making the most of a singles cruise

singles cruise jacksonville fl

As on dry land, activities are often the best way to meet people on a cruise. If you love to dance, go where the music is. If water sports are your thing, book a tropical cruise with a schedule of shore excursions that involve snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving and similar activities. Choose tours focused on wildlife watching, historical sites or food and beverage to meet shipmates who enjoy the same.

You'll often find other singles within shore excursion tour groups . However, you can increase your odds by joining social media groups specific to your cruise dates where you can connect pre-cruise with anyone cruising single.

In fact, there are dozens of social media groups dedicated to singles who love to cruise. Some groups focus on specific cruise lines, while others are broader in scope. Either way, they provide an easy opportunity to start a conversation with other singles before you ever set foot on the ship.

Your vessel's daily activity schedule is also a good place to find other singles. Check on the cruise line's app , on the interactive TV in your cabin or in the printed version (if there is one) for planned gatherings of singles, which are often pre-dinner meetups at bars.

A theme cruise is another way to meet people with similar interests. Sailings focus on country music, popular TV shows, wine tasting, crafting and other hobbies and interests. Not only will you likely find plenty of singles ready to mingle, but it might also be easier to strike up a conversation, knowing you have at least one thing in common.

Chartered singles cruises take the work out of finding other singles because you'll travel together in a group, often with a host to organize everyone. On larger ships, the charter will connect you with other group members through planned onboard meals, gatherings and activities. On smaller vessels, the tour company might charter the entire ship, so every passenger is single.

One word of caution here: It's easy to think that meeting someone on a cruise ship takes all the inherent danger out of hanging out with strangers. You're in a confined space surrounded by lots of other people. Sounds safe, right?

While cruising is, overall, incredibly safe, crime on board can happen. Like any form of travel, it's best not to let your guard down, especially if you go off alone with someone you've just met.

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when seeking other singles on cruise ships is to start with an appropriate cruise line for your age and lifestyle . Here are some great singles cruises for various age groups to help you get started.

Best cruises for singles over 20

singles cruise jacksonville fl

For young singles, cruising can sometimes feel like an expensive way to meet people. To avoid the high cost of single supplements charged to solo travelers in standard cabins meant for at least two people, single cruisers can travel with friends and share a room. (Many cabins can sleep up to four.) Also, you might feel more confident heading to the ship's bars or nightclubs in a group.

Try short three- to five-night cruises on low-cost mainstream lines like Carnival , Norwegian Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean , where you'll find more young adults and more of a party scene . Singles on a budget can also save money cruising on older, smaller ships across the mainstream fleets, which typically have lower cruise fares.

Margaritaville at Sea is another good choice for quick and affordable two-night trips to the Bahamas, though you'll need to find love quickly on such a short cruise.

Twentysomethings who have a larger travel budget and wish to cruise on their own can look for cruise lines with solo cabins. These rooms for one are in limited supply, so they can be priced at a premium and sell out quickly.

Related: The 6 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Our top pick for this age group would be a short Carnival cruise from almost any U.S. departure port.

The price is right, there's plenty of onboard fun designed for this age group (great live bands, nightly karaoke, poolside games, trivia and deck parties). It's also a good way to get your feet wet when it comes to cruising as a young single. Carnival ships have many cabins that can sleep several of your besties if you choose not to go alone.

Best cruises for singles over 30

singles cruise jacksonville fl

Cruising singles in their 30s have slightly different vacation needs from their younger peers. Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Carnival are all still great choices for this age group, whether you're traveling on your own or with a group of friends.

Another cruise line that works well for young singles is Virgin Voyages , which is child-free and has rooms and activities designed for singles. Its cheeky, nontraditional vibe is a plus for thirtysomethings.

Use the tattoo you got at the onboard tattoo studio as a conversation starter, make friends at an '80s-themed workout class, or chat up your neighbor at an after-hours cabaret or at a communal table in one of the line's many complimentary restaurants.

Single parents who vacation with their youngsters might want to add Disney Cruise Line to the list. The kids can enjoy amazing supervised programming in the expansive kids club while mom or dad enjoys adult pleasures like wine tastings, fine dining and dancing — all of which could lead to meetups with other single parents on board.

A warm-climate Royal Caribbean cruise with your best buds can be an ideal option for the over-30 set. We recommend one of the line's newest and biggest ships so you have plenty of options for food, entertainment and hangouts to try. From slides and water attractions that get your heart racing to dance clubs open until the wee hours of the night, these ships have plenty to offer young singles and plenty of places to meet new friends.

Best cruises for singles over 40

singles cruise jacksonville fl

Singles in their 40s generally are ready for a little less party and a little more romance on a singles cruise. This age group won't be out of place among festive singles on board Virgin Voyages or Carnival, but Celebrity Cruises is another cruise line to consider.

The line's newer Edge Class ships have a younger, hipper ambience than their older ships. Think martini bars, foodie havens and jazz clubs, all with decor that looks nothing like your parents' cruise ships.

Related: Best cruise ship bars

For those who like to gamble, try the mainstream cruise lines. The large casinos offer yet another opportunity to meet other singles on board — particularly at the table games. Margaritaville at Sea is another line to consider with plenty of gambling singles on board.

For fortysomething singles looking for onboard romance, we suggest a studio cabin for seven nights on NCL's new Norwegian Viva bound for the Caribbean . There's plenty to do on board and in port to help you meet people.

Additionally, the solo cabins, which have been redone in a more elegant style than on some of the line's older ships, provide access to the Studio Lounge for socializing. The lounge has also been revamped, giving it an upscale feel with free daily snacks and drinks. (Note that Norwegian's cabins for one sell out quickly, so you'll want to book early.)

Another great pick would be Virgin Voyages' four-night Fire and Sunset Soiree sailings from Miami on Scarlet Lady . They include stops at Key West and a private beach club on Bimini , plus a sea day to get to know your fellow passengers. The cost for a single "sailor," as Virgin calls them, starts at around $700.

Best cruises for singles over 50

singles cruise jacksonville fl

For senior singles cruises, all the previous options are still reasonable choices. However, some lines cater a bit more to this age group. The caveat is that cruise lines that cater to mature travelers are often targeted at couples, with solo travelers skewing older.

Oceania , Azamara and Holland America are tops on this list, especially on their shorter cruises that attract still-working professionals. The ships are large enough to have a mix of singles among the usual crowd of couples but small enough to provide a strong chance of actually meeting those other singles on board.

These lines offer port-intensive itineraries, so book ship tours to connect with like-minded folks on board since you likely won't spend as much time lounging around the pool.

For singles over 50, a Celebrity Cruises itinerary in the Mediterranean will likely include many other singles with whom you can mingle. Mediterranean cruises are popular with active mid-lifers looking to see more of the world. What could be more romantic than cruising the Greek Isles or the Italian coastline?

Best cruises for singles over 60

singles cruise jacksonville fl

Single retirees with the freedom to enjoy longer and often more expensive cruises have loads of options for meeting people. The list starts with premium lines like Holland America, Oceania and Cunard , but also Viking and Princess Cruises .

Single travelers in their 60s and older with a large travel budget should consider luxury cruise lines like Seabourn Cruise Line , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises . All of these cater to singles with reduced supplement charges and singles meet-and-greets.

Visit the maitre d' on the first day of your cruise to ensure you are seated at the same table or group of tables with other singles for dinner in the main dining room. Dance classes, trivia games and port tours also put you in the right place at the right time to strike up conversations with others looking to make new connections. Social hostesses on luxury lines can introduce you to other solo travelers, too.

Related: Why it's easier to meet new people on a smaller cruise ship

River cruises in Europe are another possibility for singles in this age group. River cruises are inherently social, in part because of the small size of the ships, but also because daily tours put people with shared interests in proximity during walking and bus excursions. There are also choices of specialty theme cruises for LGBTQ+ cruisers , wine lovers, golfers and ancestry seekers, all of which make it easier for singles to meet people on board.

Lines to consider include AmaWaterways , Viking River Cruises, Avalon River Cruises, Emerald Cruises and Uniworld River Cruises. River cruises also sometimes offer reduced single supplements, making them more affordable for those traveling alone.

A top pick for this age group would be an Alaska sailing on Silversea Cruises. This luxury line includes everything in one fare — even many fabulous Alaska excursions you would pay hundreds of dollars for on any other line. The ships are small enough that you can easily meet your fellow travelers, and the excursions make it easy to share experiences with other singles on board.

Bottom line

The romance of a cruise is undeniable. From dressy dinners to the moon's glow on the ocean waves, cruising can feel like a setting straight from a Hollywood film. Though not as simple as swiping right, cruising to meet other singles has appeal.

Choosing the right cruise line and activities can help you narrow your potential candidates. Looking for an outdoor adventurer? Choose active tours in port. Want to share your love of music, wine or Blackjack with someone? Pick a theme cruise focused on your passion.

If you just want to dance the night away with singles in your own age group, there's a ship for you — whether your jam is rock 'n' roll, hip hop or a classic waltz.

Also, you lose nothing by trying. Even if you don't meet the partner of your dreams, you'll enjoy a fantastic cruise vacation.

Discount cruises from Vacations To Go

Cruises for Singles and Solo Travelers

Vacations To Go hosts more singles and helps more solo cruisers than any other company. Whether you are looking for a fun-loving group of singles to travel with or merely trying to find the lowest possible price for a solo traveler, you've come to the right place.

Every year, we offer a wide selection of fabulous itineraries in different regions of the world, on outstanding cruise ships, and negotiate an extremely low rate for our single and solo travelers. We send trained hosts from our headquarters to organize get-togethers, cocktail parties, dinner seating and more, allowing individuals or friends to travel as part of a large and fun-loving group of singles.

Our hosted singles department is open Mon-Fri 8am to 7pm, Sat-Sun 9am to 6pm, U.S. Central Time. Check out our hosted singles cruises! If you are not looking for a hosted singles cruise but still want the lowest possible rate to cruise as a single, we can help with that, too.

Cruise lines generally charge a "single supplement" to passengers traveling solo. From the cruise line's perspective, what they are selling is cabin space, and if there are two or more people in a cabin, they split the cost of that space. People traveling alone pay for all the space by themselves.

Most cruise lines start with the per-person rate based on double occupancy and add 50-100% to the price for a single. That means that a cabin that sells for $1,000 per person based on double occupancy would be sold to a single for $1,500 to $2,000.

At Vacations To Go, we're sympathetic to our single customers' desires for a great price. We've scoured tens of thousands of departures to identify and secure the lowest single supplements for our customers, including great cabins that can be reserved by our single customers with no supplement at all. Check out our cruises with a low (or no) single supplement!

What to know about RNC singer Brian Kelley and Florida-Georgia Line’s breakup

Country music artist Brian Kelley , Volusia County native and formerly half of the record-breaking, Grammy-nominated duo "Florida Georgia Line" with Tyler Hubbard, performed at the 2024 Republican National Convention Wednesday evening along with the Holy Redeemer Church of God in Christ Choir.

Now pursuing a solo career, Kelley performed his song "American Spirit," released as a single over the July 4th weekend in 2022. It's a tribute to all those who have sacrificed to defend America’s freedoms, inspired by the singer's grandfather, John Edward Kelley, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a prisoner of war and earned two purple hearts.

The theme for Wednesday's speakers was "Make America Strong Once Again" with  a focus on foreign affairs  such as the Israel-Hamas War, Iran and China.

Kelley wasn't the only Florida notables on the stage Wednesday night. U.S. Reps Matt Gaetz, Brian Mast, Anna Paulina Luna and Michael Waltz, plus Kimberly Guilfoyle and Donald Trump Jr. all camera up to condemn President Joe Biden and praise former President Donald Trump.

Who is Brian Kelley?

Kelley was born and raised in Ormond Beach, the son of former  Volusia County Council Chair Ed Kelley . A 2004 graduate of Seabreeze High School, he played high-school baseball on local diamonds and nurtured his musical aspirations attending concerts at the Daytona Beach Bandshell.

Kelley celebrated his roots in the music video for the 2021 single “Florida Boy Forever,” which featured the singer against a backdrop of Volusia and Flagler county landmarks.

What is Florida Georgia Line?

Kelley met Tyler Hubbard in 2008 at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and they decided to become a country duo, "Florida Georgia Line." They released their first EP, "Anything Like Me," in 2010 and after meeting Nickelback producer Joey Moi at a county fair released "It's Just What We Do" in 2012. The men wrote country songs but took inspiration from bands such as Nickelback, Shinedown and Def Leppard for a genre-blending sound (nicknamed "bro-country") that caught on big.

Florida Georgia Line can brag about 19 No. 1 singles, more than 17 billion global streams and 4.8 million albums sold. It's the only country act to achieve two RIAA Diamond-certified singles — the 14-time platinum No. 1s “Cruise” and “Meant to Be” with Bebe Rexha. The duo has won five Billboard Music Awards, six CMT Music Awards, two Teen Choice Awards and many others.

Why did Brian Kelley and Florida Georgia Line break up?

There had been speculation that political differences had played a role in the split, but according to both men the duo broke up over a difference of opinion about pursuing other creative outlets . Kelley wanted to do solo work and still perform as Florida Georgia Line, Hubbard did not.

In May, the country duo appeared on separate episodes of the "Bussin' With the Boys"   podcast  with Will Compton and Taylor Lewan and their stories largely matched up.

"BK came to me and said, 'Man I'm really feeling like I want to do the solo thing,' and I'm like really?" Hubbard said on the May 7 podcast . "We were just getting out of our first deal, we were kind of in a sweet spot that we had worked for 10 years to get to."

Hubbard wanted to keep going with Florida Georgia Line for five to 10 more years, he said, but Kelley said he needed a solo career and his partner backed him up.

"I feel like I'm not enough for you … honestly it felt like a divorce," said Hubbard.

Two days later , Kelley told the podcast hosts that he and Hubbard discussed plans for extra creative outlets back in 2016, and every two years after, and had decided that after their fifth album, they would branch out individually while keeping the band alive.

The duo officially played their final show together ― for the time being at least ― in August 2022. Along the way, Kelley released his 2021 debut solo album, “Sunshine State of Mind.” In January 2023, Hubbard released a self-titled solo debut album.

Kelley told The News-Journal in 2023 that he’s open to the possibility of a FGL reunion, but is focusing on his own music right now.

“I love what we created, and I think people still want to see it. We’ll just have to see,” he said. “That answer is not held with me. Right now, we’re on a break and really focusing on solo careers. I’m just excited to be focused on building my career.”

What time is Brian Kelley performing at the 2024 RNC?

Unclear. Kelley, the Holy Redeemer Church of God in Christ Choir and the UNC Frat Boys are scheduled to perform at 8:20 p.m. on the official schedule, which would be 9:20 EDT. But Kelley's Nashville-based publicist Jensen Sussman confirmed that the singer is slated to perform in the 8 p.m. hour in the Eastern Time Zone.

How can I watch the 2024 RNC?

The  RNC  is  closed  to all but delegates, politicians, media members and volunteers, but you can still watch a lot of it on various media platforms and streaming services.  USA TODAY is streaming it here (same video as the top of the page). You also can stream the RNC on the following channels:

  • Amazon Prime
  • Facebook Live
  • X , formerly Twitter

Note that some streamers may block the sound on musical performances for copyright reasons, as has occasionally happened the previous two days.

Coverage of the convention by television networks will vary slightly. Here’s a breakdown of the major networks and their coverage plans:

  • C-SPAN  will carry the entire convention uninterrupted for all four days.
  • CBS  television stations will have live coverage starting at 10 p.m. ET all four days.
  • NBC News  will broadcast “Decision 2024” live while it streams the program, from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. the first two nights of the convention, and from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. the final two nights.
  • ABC News  will broadcast live from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. every day for four days on its main broadcast network, hosted by David Muir.
  • Fox News  will air coverage during its regular prime-time lineup of shows, and will broadcast a nightly one-hour special starting at 10 p.m., hosted by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.

Man overboard! How easy is it to fall overboard on a cruise ship, and how can you survive?

Portrait of C. A. Bridges

  • Between 2009 and 2019, there were 212 incidents of crew or passengers going overboard from a cruise ship, and only 48 were rescued.

"Man overboard!"

That cry is one of the worst things you can hear while you're on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean. It means someone has spotted a passenger or crew member either going over the side of the ship or in the water, and a life is at stake.

In July, the U.S. Coast Guard called off a search after a 30-year-old man was reported missing on Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Elation cruise ship and cruise officials said surveillance video showed him jumping off. Three weeks previous, a 42-year-old woman fell off the 10th deck of the Royal Caribbean International but was rescued by the ship's crew . In May a 35-year-old Carnival Magic passenger went overboard east of Jacksonville and was never found. James Michael Grimes, 29, made national headlines after he survived 20 hours in the Gulf of Mexico last November.

How easy is it to fall overboard on a cruise ship?

It's not easy at all.

All ships have "safety barriers that are regulated by U.S. Coast Guard standards and prevent a guest from falling off," according to Carnival spokesperson Matt Lupoli. Every open deck and balcony is required to have railings "not less than 42 inches from above the cabin deck," according to the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010  (CVSSA), with thick metal or Plexiglas panels underneath to prevent anyone from slipping through.

That's usually about chest height for the average person.

Some cruise lines are adding overboard detection sensors which use thermal cameras and micro radars to detect incidents and alert crew members.

How do people fall off cruise ships?

"I'll stress that people don't just fall over the side," said Brian Salerno, senior vice president of global maritime policy at Cruise Lines International Association, the industry's leading trade group. "There are railings and they're pretty high. It's almost always the result of an intentional act."

Standing on deck chairs, climbing on the railing and other unsafe practices can lead to tragedy.

Alcohol can play a role in overboard incidents, said Michael Winkleman, a maritime attorney with Lipcon, Margulies & Winkleman, P.A., who has represented travelers in overboard cases. "Usually, it's just people not making smart decisions because they're dramatically overserved and they end up going over," he said.

But security cameras often indicate the jump was intentional, as seems to have been the case with 30-year-old Jaylen Hill in July. Hill was reported missing by family members on the Carnival Elation and the cruise line said surveillance video showed him jumping over the side. The U.S. Coast Guard search was called off about 36 hours later.

Occasionally it's the result of a crime. In January 2018, Lonnie Loren Kocontes , 62, of Safety Harbor, Florida, was sentenced to life in prison for strangling his ex-wife and throwing her body off a cruise ship in the Mediterranean in 2006 in order to inherit more than $1 million.

That same year a Kansas woman died after  falling from the balcony , but it wasn't an accident. Eric Duane Newman, 55, of Topeka,  pleaded guilty in 2019 to second-degree murder  for strangling Tamara Tucker, 50, of Lawson, Missouri, and pushing her off.

What happens when someone goes overboard on a cruise ship?

The ship goes into emergency mode. The bridge will contact the Coast Guard and a search will begin. The ship will stop and the crew will try to pinpoint where and when it happened so they can start a thorough search in that area.

The captain also will notify other ships in the area who are then obligated to help search.

The ship will keep searching until the Coast Guard clears it to continue its voyage to the next port. The Coast Guard will continue searching, widening the radius of the search based on probable locations, conditions and ocean currents, until they feel they're unlikely to find the person.

What should I do if I see someone go overboard on a cruise ship?

If you see someone fall or jump off a cruise ship, immediately throw them a flotation device if there is one nearby. Life buoys and orange life rings are available throughout the ship. Having something to hang onto increases the person's chances of staying afloat and makes them easier to spot.

Shout out or notify a crew member as soon as you can and note the time so the bridge officers can identify the exact position of the ship at that time. Speed is of the essence. A cruise ship travels miles in a few minutes and does not turn around quickly.

Describe the person as best you can, including how fit they appeared, what they were wearing and if they were holding anything that might float, as all those factors will affect likely survival times .

What should I do if I go overboard on a cruise ship?

Don't panic. Find something that floats, if you can. Treading water can be exhausting in the open ocean

"Even a small buoyant device will help you — something you can use with your arms around or your neck over just to help relieve some of the stress if you're not a great swimmer or you're having a hard time staying afloat," survival expert Cat Bigney told The Insider.

Don't drink any salt water and if you're fortunate enough to have any fresh water with you, conserve it. If you can, pull off some clothing and wrap it around your head to avoid the sun.

If there are floating things around you, such as garbage, collect what you can to make yourself easier to spot. The Coast Guard has an increasing radius to search depending on where they think you are, and anything at all you can to do increase your chances can help.

How many people have gone overboard from a cruise ship?

Not very many as compared to the number of passengers over time. Worldwide, as of 2023, 386 cruise and ferry passengers and crew have gone overboard since 2000, according to a list from CruiseJunkie .

Between 2009 and 2019, there were 212 overboard incidents globally involving passengers and crew, according to  statistics compiled for CLIA  by consulting firm G.P. Wild (International) Limited.

Generally speaking, however, cruises are pretty safe. An estimated 20.4 million people took cruises in 2022, according to statistics site Statista , with signs of higher numbers this year.

Do people die when they go overboard?

Not necessarily. It depends on whether the person was conscious when they went over, if they were injured by the fall or impact with the water, how well they can swim or if they have a flotation device, the sea and weather conditions, the water temperature, and how quickly the crew or the Coast Guard can rescue them. There are also the risks from overexposure, hypothermia, dehydration, and predators.

A 42-year-old woman spent an hour in the water after falling from the 10th deck of the Royal Caribbean International in June but was rescued by the ship's crew.

But unless the person was seen going over or spotted immediately, the odds may be against them. If the ship is moving the person may be rapidly swept away and if the location isn't known a single person's head can be extremely difficult to see in the vast, rolling ocean.

How many people are rescued after falling off a cruise ship?

Of the 212 listed as overboard between 2009 and 2019, only 48 people were rescued.

But miracles do happen. In 2018, a cruise ship worker was rescued when another cruise ship spotted him 22 hours after he went overboard northwest of Cuba, long after the Coast Guard had called off the search.

Rappers, strippers and a felon: Is this Donald Trump's new Republican Party?

The gop seems to be morphing before our eyes because of a combination of events, including president joe biden's incompetence, donald trump's influence on the party and the assassination attempt..

Portrait of Nicole Russell

The 2024 election has changed dramatically in recent days. Why? Two reasons. The failed assassination attempt Saturday of former President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to speak Thursday night to conclude the Republican National Convention . And the GOP's shift on policies, visible this week throughout the convention .

The GOP seems to be morphing before our eyes because of a combination of events, including President Joe Biden's incompetence, Trump's influence on the party and the failed assassination attempt.

The convention has been a cacophony of professionals, misfits and patriots − not unlike the GOP itself. We've heard from established leaders such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who's also a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Who is Amber Rose? A new Republican.

But the real eye-catchers causing a stir are the "outsiders." People who either used to be Democrats or who embrace a message the GOP wants to send.

A self-described lifelong Jewish Democrat, Shabbos Kestenbaum, spoke Wednesday night at the convention. He and other Jewish students are suing their alma mater, Harvard University, for discrimination following antisemitic protests in the wake of Hamas' brutal attack on Israel in October.

"I know very few Orthodox Jews who have voted for President Biden in 2020 and are planning to do so again in 2024," Kestenbaum  told Fox News Digital . "We will, I believe, see a tremendous amount of Jewish support towards Donald Trump in a way that we haven't seen before."

On Monday, rapper Amber Rose spoke to delegates inside the convention hall in Milwaukee. Her presence stirred controversy. She's neither a politician nor a lifelong Republican. She's a 40-year-old former model and stripper who dated Kanye West before she married and divorced rapper Wiz Khalifa.

In her convention speech , Rose said she had an "aha" moment when it came to racial issues and Trump. “Donald Trump and his supporters don’t care if you’re Black, white, gay or straight, it’s all love," she said. "And that’s when it hit me. These are my people; this is where I belong.”

Conservative writer and activist Matt Walsh criticized the move on social media, saying that Rose's appearance was “truly an embarrassment. Not a single voter will be mobilized by this person.”

Left must own up to divisive rhetoric: Joe Biden admits putting Donald Trump in 'bull's-eye' was a mistake. It's a little late for that.

I don't see Rose's appearance as a beacon of hope or as an object of derision. She's clearly not a politician or thought leader, but her presence does signal something noteworthy: Trump is hoping to attract atypical voters to the Republican Party.

That is not a bad thing. Conservatism is attractive, even if not all Republicans are as conservative as some in the party would like. Rose may not be a small-government, lower-taxes, America-first Republican, but the fact she no longer identifies with the Democratic Party is a starting point, one that many voters who have been outside traditional GOP circles can identify with.

What did the GOP lose by having her speak? Respect? Please. We're long past that point.

The Republican Party shifts to the center

This week, the official Republican Party platform shifted its long-held conservative stances on abortion and marriage. Now, the GOP no longer calls, as a party, for a federal abortion ban and no longer defines marriage as between one man and one woman.

"Is this a sign that your father (Donald Trump) is moving to the center?” NBC News' Savannah Guthrie asked Eric Trump .

“He's always been there on those issues," Eric Trump said. " That’s reflective of who my father is and what he believes in (and) my wife Lara who runs the RNC and what she believes in. ... At the end of the day, this country has real holes in the roof, and you’ve got to fix those holes and you've got to stop worrying about the little spot on the wall in the basement.”

What are the holes in the roof that need to be fixed? For Trump, it's bringing down inflation, sealing the border, rebuilding the economy, protecting American workers who feel left behind and cultivating a better education system.

Still, Trump did pick Ohio Sen. JD Vance, who is adamantly opposed to abortion , to run as his vice presidential nominee. So, I wouldn't rush to judgment on the idea that the GOP has abandoned its focus on protecting life.

But the shift toward a more moderate and more commonly held view on abortion could draw in voters who agree with conservative and populist economic ideas but are hesitant about the party's longtime conservative positions on social issues.

Vance's populist appeal, coupled with Trump's, sends a strong message to independent voters and even moderate Democrats: This isn't the Republican Party of the past.

But will it work? The past several days have shown at least an emotional shift toward the Republican Party, spurred by Trump's raised fist and shout of "Fight!" seconds after surviving a would-be assassin's bullet .

Trump stood defiantly after shooting. America also needs to stand against violence.

Is the election all but decided?

As Trump prepares to end the convention with his acceptance speech Thursday night, it's hard to see America, or the Republican Party, staying the same after the past week. Everything changed on a Saturday evening in Butler, Pennsylvania .

It's one thing to think Trump is a fraud, a felon or a hypocrite. It's something entirely different to see a former American president targeted for an assassination and nearly killed. Political violence has a way of clarifying things.

I won't be so bold as to say the election is over, but there has been a seismic shift in the race. And the GOP's new focus this week has bolstered that change.
