The Best Travel Clubs for Seniors are a great way to travel with others. You can find new senior travel partners and make friendships. In some clubs you can even travel with friends or family plus enjoy the company of new travel companions.

What are Travel Clubs for Seniors and Why Join one?

Senior Travel Clubs differ from other types of group travel. Travel clubs usually charge a small fee. Sometimes they ask for a modest initial fee to help cover their own expenses. To justify paying these fees realize that there are benefits. 

• Club only discounts
• Travel Brochures or other well-researched resources.
• Host visits from experienced travelers who can offer advice.
• Often, you can personally ask questions and get helpful information.

Clubs have meetings and Senior Travel Clubs aren’t any different.

These meeting might be once a month or only a few times a year. When a trip is being planned, it is a social event.

You can help in the decision making; it can be fun and rewarding. You don’t need to do it all alone and you can get or receive help.

Club Safety

For many reasons, there is always safety in traveling with others. It may deter being targeted by those eager to steal from you or con you. 

With a Travel Club one important consideration might be transportation.

Many Club Trips are taken by bus or car. 

Even some bus, plane or train trips require transportation to the bus station, airport, or train station. So if the destination is close or far, you can usually share the driving or not drive at all if that is your preference. 

You might have difficulty driving at night now or a disability might hinder your safety with driving. Whatever the reason, being a member of a travel club solves the problem.

As older adults, health is often a consideration when traveling. Taking trips with a group is one way to leave some of our health concerns behind. 

An advantage of a club is traveling with others closer to our age. Many will have health issues of various kinds just like you. 

Have you ever rejected family vacations with younger members because you didn’t want to slow them down? At this time of life we are entitled to travel on our own terms.

Covid has presented most Senior Travelers with additional challenges. Senior Travel Clubs will have health safety requirements which will give you a sense of protection. 

Types of Travel Clubs for Seniors

Senior Travel groups vary by size. While some have a small number of travelers, others are much larger.

Another distinction is whether or not a club allows you to bring a partner, friend, or family members along. Some clubs do not allow this but rather require exclusive membership for all travelers.

Although not all clubs are commercial, many are. These commercial travel clubs are hosted by large companies. 

Some advice, beware of scams in regard to commercial clubs. Do your research, check for references, and if necessary use the Better Business Bureau. 

One Red Flag might be pressure to join. Another would be a high fees in exchange for promised large discounts. Legitimate Travel Clubs usually charge a modest fee.

Where to find Senior Travel Clubs

Some examples:

• Alumni, Veterans, Retiree organizations
• Sporting, arts, nature, birding
• Community Centers,  religious, volunteer
• Cultural or languages
• RV, motorcycle, car, train groups. 

Sometimes you will find that your church or Senior Citizen Center may have their own travel clubs.

You may also discover travel clubs to suit you on the Internet or through Social Media such as Facebook and Pinterest.

How to choose a Travel Club for Seniors

This personal choice has criteria that can differ from person to person.

Do you want your trip to reflect your hobby or are you interested in the adventure of sightseeing a new location?

What is your age and activity level? How does the club support these individual needs? Are there any levels to determine this?

Many of us seniors can choose the length of our vacations. How long would you like yours to last; a day, a week, a month?

What kind of transportation do you prefer when traveling?

If you are wary of traveling right now due to Covid concerns, some clubs have Virtual Trips.

These can be interesting and a way to meet some of the members for future trips. 

These are all considerations for choosing a club that will enable you to travel with “peace of mind” as a senior worry free and get the most out of your travels.

The fee to join is $36 for a one year membership. You will receive a monthly newsletter. 

The majority of members are Solo Travelers or couples who meet the age requirement of 55 plus. The trip group is small ranging from around 8 to 16. 

The trips offered span the globe but the main focus is the Southwestern United States. 

Another advantage of this club is that they will customize a trip specifically for your club. Additionally, all travelers do not need to be members of your club.

The Affordable Travel Club:

Club members must be over 40 and pay $15 for a single membership and $20 for a double membership, U.S. dollars. 

This club is similar to a house/home exchange membership program. They call themselves a “Hospitality Exchange” club.

It has a North American Membership Application (for those joining from U.S./Canada/Mexico) and an Overseas Membership Application (for those joining from overseas). 

This club was established to provide low cost accommodations for older travelers. When you join this club, you receive an Online Directory and Host Membership Card. 

You can use this directory to search for all the accommodations in the location of your travels. You can then contact the owner directly to arrange your stay. 

As a member, you will host approximately 3 times throughout a year. You will be expected to provide clean and comfortable sleeping quarters for your guest/guests to stay. 

The club rules ask that you provide breakfast and an hour of your time to acquaint them with the area.

Travel and Leisure Travel Club:

This club is large and well known. You can try if for Free for 30 days and then there is a monthly fee of $14.95. 

There are numerous benefits including:

You will receive members only pricing on rental cars and discounts on cruises.

Hi, i'm pat.

Travel has been my passion for as long as I can remember.  I had been creating itineraries for family and friends my entire life, so the transition to professional travel advisor was easy.  In 2007, I became a proud member of ASTA (American Society of Travel Advisors). 

Over time, some of my clients, mostly seniors, lost their travel partners through aging, and this prompted my creation of SeniorTravelBuddy.com, a website which won ASTA’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2018.  Our new website, MySeniorTravelBuddies.com has replaced the old one.  I teamed up with Monique when my Facebook page, Senior Travel Buddies, exploded in 2021, and we work 

together to take good care of our members.

I had the privilege of staying home and raising my kids ever since they were born but once they were all in high school and busy with their friends and social lives I decided to get back into the travel industry. I had done the training just out of high school but then before I could start working I met my husband and we started a family. I got myself recertified and became a travel agent  in 2014. I would plan and organize trips for friends and family and I loved doing it.

About a year ago I joined Pat with her senior travel FB group because it had become so successful it was too big for her to do it herself. Thanks for the reviews. Saga looks like the best fit for me then. Anyone have an experience of this company to share please. I will be travelling solo from NZ and want to visit Europe and would love to travel with similar age/likeminded people.

OAT will not work with your travel agent. You have to make all your own bookings and if there is a problem, you most likely will call and get a different person every time.

I would NOT recommend G Adventures. They cater to a younger crowd, often times the accommodations are like hostels and may be uncomfortable for older people. Also, if one has limited mobility, lots of walking and vehicles driving long distances are not adequate for older people.

Finding Senior Travel Companions

You're an avid traveler, fascinated by unknown places and new experiences. You know where you'd like to travel and have done some trip planning . There's just one stumbling block: You want to find a travel companion, someone who wishes to see the world and has a travel budget similar to yours.

If you're single and retired, it's not necessarily easy to find others to match your travel pace. Thankfully there are more resources now than ever before to connect adults who want to set off and explore together, whether it be a local day trip or a month-long backpacking experience.

Identify Your Vacation Goals and Travel Style

If you want to travel with at least one other person, you will need to spend some time thinking about your travel goals and travel style. If you don't know how you like to travel, you will not be able to explain your travel expectations to potential travel companions, so consider the many travel options trips include before beginning your search.

• Hotel rooms: Do you prefer luxury comfort, mid-range hotel accommodations, or bargain hostels?
• Dining: Do you want to experience Michelin star-level dining, local favorites, chain restaurants, or fast food? Would you prefer to cook your own food in a vacation cottage or efficiency suite?
• Transportation: Are you comfortable taking public transportation or do you prefer to drive your car or travel by taxicab? Are you willing to walk long distances?
• Sightseeing: Which travel activities suit you best? Museums, adventure and outdoor travel, historic sights, guided tours , spas, and shopping excursions are just some of the options you should consider.

It's important to know how you like to travel. Going on a trip with another person is an intimate experience, and you'll want to be sure that all travelers have the same expectations before taking off.

Word of Mouth

One of the best ways to find a like-minded travel companion is to tell everyone you know that you want to travel, but need someone to go with you to keep costs down. Ask friends and family to pass along your contact information if they meet someone who wants to travel and is trustworthy.

Senior Centers

Depending on where you live, your local senior center might be just the place to find a travel companion. Many senior centers offer both day trips and weekend adventures, but even if you don't find those destinations interesting, you can meet people who enjoy traveling at one of the center's other programs. Try an exercise class—you'll want to be as fit as possible for your next trip—or a cultural class, such as music appreciation. You might just bump into someone who could be a future travel companion.

Travel Groups

Travel groups come in all varieties. Sometimes these groups are called travel clubs or vacation clubs because they often have some type of membership requirement, which could include membership fees or dues. You may be able to find a travel group through your church, place of employment, public library, or school alumni association. Once you find a congenial group, you can take trips with the travel group or plan an independent trip with travel companions from that group.

If you are looking at travel groups to join, be sure you understand the difference between a travel group that charges a small amount ($5 to $10) per month for dues and a vacation club that requires a membership fee of several thousand dollars. In 2013, the Better Business Bureau's Dallas and North Texas office published an investigation into travel club selling practices, focusing on the vacation club scheme and the high membership fees some vacation clubs charge.

Online Groups & Meetups

Websites and online communities like Meetup.com , for example, allow members to search for, join, and even start groups dedicated to travel, dining, and almost anything else that interests them. For example, a meetup group called "50+ Singles Travel and Social Group" organizes day trips, social events, cruises , tours, and visits to special events in the Baltimore area.

Always exercise caution when revealing personal information to members of an online group. Never agree to meet an online acquaintance in a private place; always meet in public. Use good judgment and trust your instincts when deciding to participate in a group event. Meet a potential travel companion several times before agreeing to book a trip together.

12 – Visit the Florida Holocaust Museum

Dedicated to remembering the millions of murdered men, women and children, Florida’s Holocaust Museum is one of the largest of its type in the country. It houses both permanent and temporary exhibitions and is a vital resource for learning about the horrors of the holocaust and the levels of persecution European Jewish people faced.

The museum was founded in 1992 by Walter P. Loebenberg, a local businessman and philanthropist. Loebenberg himself escaped Nazi Germany for Florida and then joined the United States Armed Forces to serve in World War II.

The poignant exhibitions include one of the few surviving boxcars which were used by the Nazis to transport Jews and political prisoners to the death camps of Auschwitz and Treblinka. It also keeps an archive of video interviews with holocaust survivors as an integral memento for future generations.

14 – Relax under the trees at North Straub Park

If the Florida sun is proving too much for you, why not take a stroll down to North Straub Park. Located on the bayfront between St. Pete’s Pier and 5th ave NE, the park has plenty of shady trees to lounge under, including some big old banyan trees with an unusual-looking aerial root system.

The park has plenty of shaded walkways so it’s the ideal place to go for a refreshing stroll in the cool ocean breeze. It also offers stunning views of the north shore and Tampa Bay and you can take a seat right on the waterfront to check out the yachts in the harbor.

15 – See gopher tortoises at Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge

Stuck out on its own in the mouth of Tampa Bay, Egmont Key has been an important ecological preserve since 1974. The island’s strategic position means it has played a major role in many domestic wars and includes the remains of Fort Dade as well as a 100-year-old lighthouse.

It is now an important nesting site for sea turtles, tortoises and hundreds of thousands of sea birds. A visitor favorite on the island is its large colony of gopher tortoises who definitely aren’t shy of people and can be seen trudging around the pathways and roads of Egmont Key State Park. Brown Pelicans are also a common sight in the area with over 600 of the birds calling the island home.

Egmont Key will be one of the most interesting things to do for nature and history lovers in St. Petersburg. Visitors can check out the historic Fort Dade and its large coastal gun battery, Battery McIntosh and the remains of Battery Burchsted, which now floats just off the island.

17 – Go fishing at Skyway Fishing Pier State Park

St.Petersburg is home to a very unique and cool fishing spot in the shadow of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge which spans Tampa Bay. When the Sunshine Skyway was built in the mid-1980s, the old bay bridge was left in place and quickly became popular with local anglers.

It is now considered the world’s longest fishing pier and gives fishermen unrestricted access to the deeper bay waters. What’s better still is that you can drive your car right up to your favorite fishing spot, pretty neat!

You can catch a wide selection of fish here. Common varieties caught at the pier include grouper, Spanish mackerel, red snapper and black sea bass and the bridge is even lit up after dark so you can fish late into the evening.

Yeehaw! The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art is enough to make even the most skeptical of souls feel patriotic. Its collection features contemporary works, mostly created since the 1980s and includes, paintings, sculptures, jewelry and more.

Many of the themes include historical subjects and recently the museum has focused on a selection of works by living Native American artists. It has separate exhibition spaces devoted to the early west, native life, western frontier and wildlife among others.

20 – Take a boat out from Demens Landing Park

Another of the city’s fantastic waterfront green spaces, Demens Landing Park occupies the space which was formerly the city’s first railway pier. It is named after its creator, Peter Demens.

Laying directly on the waterfront between the Central and South Yacht Basins and in close distance to the AI Lang Stadium and Saturday Morning Market, this park is in the most bustling part of the city’s harbor. It has plenty of benches to sit and relax on as well as large green spaces if you want to throw a frisbee around.

If you plan to venture out onto the water while in the city, the park is a good launch point and has a boat ramp that is available for use. There are also picnic benches and public restrooms. This centrally located park is a great place to visit and soak up the atmosphere.

21 – Explore the Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum

It’s hard to believe that the lush 2-acre tropical gardens of Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum were a mini-golf course not so long ago. This beautiful collection of exotic palms is well worth a visit during your time in the city.

The transformation began in 1976 after a donation of 60 palms of ten different species was gifted by longtime palm admirer, Miss Gizelle Kopsick. The Arboretum was dedicated to Miss Kopsick one year later to celebrate her 100th Birthday.

Over nearly 50 years, the collection has grown to include 150 species of palm and cycads and 500 individual plants. The arboretum is wheelchair accessible and as part of St. Petersburg’s city parks, is free admission.

You’ll never have to go far to find amazing history here, and the Jungle Prada Site is a particularly compelling spot.

After all, it was here that some of Florida’s earliest residents made their homes!

22 – Learn some unique stories on the Jungle Prada Site history tour

The Tocobaga tribe was a major influence in the region for centuries, and some of their ceremonial mounds are still intact today.

You’ll get to see these remarkable constructions up close, and spend some quality time exploring the remnants of their daily lives, as well as the impact of Spanish colonization in the 1500s.

You’ll even be able to look at many of the items used by those long-gone locals!

23 – See amazing Contemporary glass art at Imagine Museum

The newly opened Imagine Museum is one of the first institutions dedicated solely to contemporary glass art in the US. Its collection includes over 1,500 pieces from all over the world as well as a core collection of 500 American studio glass artworks.

This inspiring museum is sure to uplift everyone who visits as it stretches our concept of the applications of glass as a material. The unique pieces collected here display the ingenuity of the individual artists and the wide range of techniques applied in the modern studio glass scene.

The museum displays both permanent and temporary exhibitions and visitors can opt to join a tour of the gallery to gain a deeper insight into the artworks on display. 24 – Cycle the Pinellas Trail

Whatever your preferred way to explore outdoors, be it jogging, walking, cycling or skating — you are bound to enjoy the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail. The trail starts in St. Petersburg and runs all the way to Tarpon Springs, covering a distance of 50 miles.

The trail runs through a number of towns on the way including South Pasadena, Palm Harbor and Clearwater. This unique and level passageway used to be the route of the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line Railroads which were abandoned in the 1980s.

Why not take a bike tour of the city to learn a little more about its history and the best places to cycle and walk. The Pinellas Trail has some super-scenic stops to visit along the way including Honeymoon Island near Dunedin and Wall Springs Park in Palm Harbor.

25 – Sunbathe at Fort De Soto Park

Pinellas County’s largest public park, Fort De Soto Park covers over 1,100 acres and has a huge amount of things to see and do.

The park is spread out over five islands sitting in the mouth of Tampa Bay and features coastal areas, wetlands, forests and meadows, as well as one of the region’s finest beaches. You’ll find plenty here to explore.

Wildlife lovers can spend the day spotting the wide variety of creatures that live in the area. Since the 1960s, 328 species of bird have been documented in the park. Visitors can hike over six miles of trails that stretch between both coasts and past the historic fort.

The park also has over seven miles of waterfront, almost half of which is blanketed with white sandy beaches, two fishing piers and a canoe trail. With two large swim centers, picnic areas and campgrounds, as well as the Quartermaster Museum, you’ll definitely fall in love with Fort De Soto Park.

26 – Spot manatees at Coffee Pot Bayou

The scenic waterfront road, Coffee Pot Boulevard, which skirts by Coffee Pot Bayou has picturesque views of Snell Isle and could be one of the most enchanting spots in St. Petersburg for a stroll.

The Bayou is a great year-round place to spot manatees but especially in the cooler months of the year when the water remains warmer than the surrounding Gulf of Mexico.

The area has charming old waterfront homes with European and Spanish designs and cool tree-lined avenues to explore. The walk over Snell Isle Bridge offers nice views of the historical Renaissance Vinoy Resort and the upmarket neighborhood of Snell Isle.

27 – Pet an alligator at Alligator & Wildlife Discovery Center

Ever wanted to get up close to an alligator? Well now’s your chance! The Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center allows visitors to do just that, you can even kiss one if you really want to?!

The center offers shelter and rehabilitation to surrendered gators that were bought as pets and outgrew their homes. Visitors get the unique opportunity to see alligators up close and pet and hold them under careful supervision.

Though the primary draw of the Alligator & Wildlife Discovery Center is going to be alligators, there are also plenty of other creatures to get up close to. The center is home to a bunch of unusual and interesting residents including fish, snakes, skunks, lizards, pigs and more.

28 – Treat yourself to a Yacht dinner cruise

Time to treat yourself like a rock star – with the perfect watercraft to match! Yachts are the perfect way to enjoy this beautiful region, taking you on a luxurious trip around the Gulf.

29 –  Bike around Maximo Park

Located on Boca Ciega Bay, Maximo Park is both a beautiful waterfront park and also an important archeological site in the city. For thousands of years, the park was home to indigenous American people who fished and lived on these shores. There is information throughout the park about the tribes that once settled here.

Why not take some time to rest under the shady trees and play a game of Tocobaga Disc golf on the specially built 18-hole course. Explore the boardwalk trails and climb the 50-foot observation tower to glimpse some amazing panoramic views of the park.

See rescued native sea creatures at Clearwater Marine Aquarium , including dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and pelicans. Many of the creatures here were in some way injured and cannot be returned to the wild but are well looked after in purpose-built habitats. The aquarium also has freshwater creatures such as its adorable river otters, Walle and Boomer.
