Mississippi woman walks, talks with snakes, camels and kangaroos. You can, too.

Portrait of Lici Beveridge

Have you ever wanted to have a coatimundi, a kookaburra or a kinkajou?

Arianna LeVine has. But she has taken her love of animals one step further. She actually owns one — or maybe even a few — exotic animals.

The 29-year-old from Lamar County has a large number of pets of a variety that many people would only dream of having.

Visitors to her home might be greeted by a zebra, a potbellied pig or even a camel as they wander up the private road not too far from Purvis' city limits.

If you look around you might see a couple African sulcata tortoises. You can't miss them. They're pretty big. LeVine said they're the third largest species in the world.

"They live a long time and get very big," she said. "Also, they need a large habitat and a heated area. They can’t tolerate below 60 (degrees)."

Step inside the aviary built in the back of the house where LeVine lives with her parents Mark and Sylvia LeVine, and visitors will find a number of parrots in a variety of colors. Most likely guests will meet Perry, a blue parrot that likes to get cozy with guests.

"I use the parrots as an example of why you probably shouldn't get one as a pet," LeVine said. "Or why you need to research (before getting one)."

Parrots can live 60-80 years "and they are about as smart as a 3-year-old child," she said, so it is a lifetime commitment and then some.

And the birds chew up everything they can get their beaks on. They are intelligent animals and need a lot of enrichment, LeVine said.

(Story continues below photo gallery.)

"They are not animals that need to spend all day in a cage," she said.

LeVine had parrots as pets long before her menagerie grew into the exotic animal collection she has today, but she started acquiring exotic varieties about three years ago.

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” French novelist Anatole France, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1921.

That passion for animals has grown significantly over the last few years and now LeVine is sharing her love of animals through educational tours and animal encounters.

She also will bring some of the animals out for hands-on presentations at a variety of events.

"People come in and have a good experience," she said.

Paulette LeBlanc of Hattiesburg surprised her grandchildren with a trip to SafARI TAILS on a school holiday in January.

She took her grandchildren, who were 9 and 10 at the time, and they got to see and do more than they had expected.

"It was very personal, very educational," she said. "I was impressed with the tour, impressed with how clean and nice the enclosures were. I was extremely impressed with the whole setup."

LeBlanc said she discovered SafARI TAILS through someone else who had been there.

"I want to take them to things and experience things that are out of the norm," she said. "We went to Florida to swim with manatees. Knowing that I had them only one afternoon, I asked for recommendations."

At SafARI  TAILS (teaching about animals in live shows) , guests might have the opportunity to hold a sloth or snake or even a scorpion while they learn about LeVine's pets.

"I wanted to start my own animal education program," she said. "I wanted to teach everyone about the misunderstood. Even though we have pretty animals, my main goal is to focus on the misunderstood."

LeVine said people are afraid of snakes, lizards and other unusual creatures because they don't know much about them. She loves to see visitors begin to feel more comfortable around the reptiles, which are virtually harmless.

"I want to teach them to love the unloved," she said. "You only fear what you don't understand."

She said she tries to get people who are afraid of snakes to hold one to see it isn't as bad as they think.

"I live for that moment," she said. "If I can change just one person's mind about that, it's been amazing."

Outside there are more enclosures for the many other animals that live at SafARI TAILS. The coatimundi have plenty of room to run and play. Lenny the ring-tailed lemur tries to persuade visitors to give him a treat.

A colony of rabbits have their own multilevel mansion, designed especially for them, with a chandelier that would please any bunny.

A couple monitor lizards have their own private saunas and venture outdoors when the weather is nice.

A pair of kangaroos and an albino wallaby fill another large enclosure where they bask in the sun or hop to their hearts' content. They also have rooms that are heated or cooled as needed since Mississippi weather isn't always suitable for exotic pets.

Three camels — two dromedary and a bactrian — and a zebra are the largest animals in LeVine's collection.

"(LeVine's dad) was out on the tractor," LeBlanc said. "Everywhere her dad went, the camels were following him, just like puppies."

Mark LeVine oversees care of the camels. Sylvia LeVine enjoys taking care of the kangaroos. Arianna LeVine's favorites are the "unloved" — snakes, lizards and arachnids.

Her pet collection doesn't end there. She has a sloth, a hairy armadillo and a fennec fox, too.

LeVine said she has always been an animal lover.

"I usually tell everyone my first word was 'ish' for fish," she said. "It wasn't Mom or Dad."

She wanted to go to veterinary school, but when she went to college, she discovered it wasn't what she wanted to do.

She studied at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she did some salamander research and studied herpetology — reptiles and amphibians.

She worked at a veterinary clinic and the Hattiesburg Zoo.

"I loved doing the educational tours," she said.

In the meantime, her home was becoming somewhat of a zoo in itself. LeVine doesn't breed animals and although she isn't a rescue, has taken in a few unwanted parrots and reptiles.

She and her parents spend much of their time caring for the animals and offering educational tours — by appointment only. They also host birthday parties and other events.

"You can tell she is personally involved with and invested in each of the animals," LeBlanc said. "Whatever questions (the grandchildren) asked, she answered. She explained to them these are not animals you keep in your backyard."

Caring for so many animals isn't a piece of cake.

The animals are given high-quality food and are socialized so they are able to be around people. They get the best care possible. Caring for the animals is expensive.

The tours and T-shirt sales help pay for their care, and a brick paver fundraiser campaign was launched in April. Anyone can buy a brick to help support the SafARI TAILS experience.

LeVine, who also works at Anatomies, said she and her parents don't take vacations or go on overnight stays since no one else is trained to care for the animals.

"It's not glamorous," she said. "My whole life revolves around the animals. We don't have hired staff. We're not open to the public — it's by appointment only. It takes a lot of work to prepare for an event. It's a labor of love."

For instance, when the kangaroos were babies, LeVine and her mother would carry them in pouches when they went shopping.

"They don’t make great pets for the average person who works," she said. "There's a reason they are sweet. They have been raised and socialized as babies."

Safari Tails

Together, lets create your African tale

— This is the start of your African adventure —

start

An animal’s tail is one of the most expressive parts of its anatomy. It tells a story without words and carries a hundred different meanings.

It provides a sign in the bush where often things are seen but not heard. In the peaceful tranquillity of the safari, an animal’s tail can tell you, its friends, its enemies, everything you ever wanted to know with a single flick or colour.

The story that a tail tells is not unlike the tale you will tell... the greatest tales come from the most exotic, adventurous experiences, where natural beauty and travelling possibility are laid bare. These are experiences that would change your life, rearrange the way you see the world.

At Safari Tails we’ve lived these moments, our lives are changed, and we’ve been rearranged. With over 20 years of travelling through Africa, working in Africa, working with travellers in Africa, we’ve learnt that this travelling treasure, this poetic paradise, this cultural clash and home of discovery bathed in natural abundance, will change your life.

With our in depth travel knowledge, strong relationships with specialist guides and bead on all the secret spots, we will set the tone for your story and plot your journey.

When your life has been altered by Africa, it will be your travel tale to tell…

I went for their Valentines event and it was a blast. It was my wife's birthday present and we couldn't have been more pleased! The people who run it are so friendly and knowledgeable. And there is such a broad selection of animals that there is a surprise around every corner! I highly suggest this to anyone who is ANY type of animal lover! There's something for everyone!

We did the sloth encounter for my sister's birthday. The facility was very clean and well laid out. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. You can tell she loves the animals and is passionate to educate people about them. We had plenty of time to interact with the animals and never felt rushed. We plan on going back and doing the full tour.

7 of us… 5,7,8,12,13,19 and considerably older than 19… had an absolute blast today. As any parent knows all too well, the times you have to make memories are so fleeting. We made the best memories. The animals are amazing, Arianna is so kind and knowledgeable, the grounds are beautiful. We will be going back!! What a wonderful experience!!

This place is great! They have a large variety of animals and the opportunity to hold and pet most of them. The young lady that took us around was very friendly and knowledgeable. You can tell she loved all these animals. The animals were in great health. The kids had a fantastic time. I promise you will love it if you go. I was very impressed with the care they give all the animals.

Best hands on encounter I've ever had. Safari Ari is extremely knowledgeable, and the diversity of creatures on site is amazing. I would definitely recommend going here.

This place is amazing!!!!! It's ran by Safari Ari!!! And her mom and dad. I've never seen a family more dedicated to their animals/companions. All the animals are super socialized, and friendly. My personal favorite is their Blue Macaw. They offer amazing tours, and have great prices. They also come to you for birthday parties! You can't get much better than that. They deserve credit for all their hard work and bringing education to children about wild animals. Ps their snakes are HUGE!!!! 🐍 🐍

safari tails adventures reviews

A great experience of up-close and hands-on animal interaction. These folks do a great job of explaining each animal and how to safely be a part of their world. I enjoyed seeing their enclosures nearly as much as the animals themselves. Everything has been well thought out. Keep up the great work. We'll be back again.

safari tails adventures reviews

Went here for the Christmas event and it was wonderful. We've never been before, and this was a cheaper option for the first time. My sons loved the snakes and tarantula and we will go back for a regular tour for sure!

Absolutely incredible! It was a great educational, hands-on animal adventure. It was a personal tour with lots of information and up close experiences with a wide variety of exotic animals. I recommend Safari Tail Adventures to everyone.

Awesome place to check out! The lemurs are a must see. All the animals seem to be well taken care of here. I'll be coming back the next time I'm passing through for sure!

Our Readers' Favorite Safari Outfitters in 2022

When checking off a major bucket list trip like a safari, customization and convenience are top of mind for Travel + Leisure readers.

safari tails adventures reviews

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite Safari Outfitters.

Spotting the Big Five is the goal for many safari-goers. But chances of actually getting a glimpse of the elephants, leopards, lions, rhinoceroses, and African buffalos depend greatly on the company guiding the trip — especially its attention to the tiniest of details and its expertise on how to responsibly and carefully navigate on the African fauna's home turf. The best safari outfitters accomplish this with aplomb.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , Travel + Leisure asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

This year, three new safari outfitters entered the top 10 that weren't on last year's list. Deeper Africa (No. 5) is known for going beyond the obvious (a trip to Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo with more than 1,000 mountain gorillas, perhaps?), while Africa Adventure Company (No. 7) is operated by the author of a guidebook on the continent's wildlife who has more than three decades of experience, and Go2Africa (No. 9) is run by people born and raised in Africa . Customization options and personalized service were key for travelers. The "passionate" teams at Extraordinary Journeys (No. 2) took the time to understand what guests were hoping to get out of their safari experience and curate itineraries that were nothing short of "magical." One also called out the thoughtful conveniences — like car services and dayrooms in Nairobi — saying they added an elevated level of comfort that wasn't anticipated but "was a godsend."

The challenges of traveling during a global pandemic were also assuaged by the top companies, which, a reader, said addressed "every single one of [their] concerns and questions…before it came to mind," especially in a destination that can feel "complicated." One traveler complimented Extraordinary Journeys for making all the "intimidating" and "ever-changing rules" so "seamless."

Find the full list of this year's best tour operators, as voted by T+L readers, below.

1. Travel Beyond

After coming in fifth last year, this company — which runs tours in Botswana, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zanzibar, among others — rises to the top spot. In operation since 1975, Travel Beyond consistently impressed readers with its emphasis on putting travelers' needs first, by paying "close attention to all the details," and by working "very hard to get to know their clients' travel styles and interest." Its custom itineraries put responsible wildlife viewing and touring the area's unique scenery first, but also added in experiences like wine tastings and visits to historic landmarks to create "the most incredible adventures." A female solo traveler said they've planned "several once-in-a-lifetime trips" for her.

Classic Safaris

These are just some of our favourite classic safari routes, some combine bush adventures and beach relaxation whilst others take you deep in to the heart of the African wilderness – these trips are considered classic for a good reason, they give you the opportunity to experience the best of your chosen destinations.

1. Kenya - Great Migration Safari and Beach

  • Witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara
  • Spot big cats such as lions, leopards and cheetahs
  • Experience vibrant Masai culture
  • Watch the humpback whale migration in the Indian Ocean
  • Relax on the beautiful beaches of the Kenyan coast

Best time to go: August - September (peak season for both migrations)

This is a fantastic opportunity to witness some of the largest mammal migrations on the planet.

Firstly, head to Kenya on safari to the Masai Mara during the height of the Great Migration - one of the greatest wildlife shows on earth and if this is high on your bucket list then you will need to book early as it is a very popular time of year in Kenya.

The river crossings are an emotional experience; as the suspense builds you can almost feel the trepidation until one wildebeest has the courage to make a dash for the other side. There’s no doubt that you will be filled with excitement, heartache, adrenaline and joy as you witness mass herds of wildebeest and zebra frantically plunging through crocodile-infested river waters, with the survivors still needing to outwit and outpace the large number of predators who lie in wait on the other side.

For more details, take a look at our complete guide to where, when and how to see the Wildebeest Migration.

Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration

With our selection of striking safari lodges, you'll be perfectly placed in the heart of the Masai Mara to witness one of the greatest spectacles of the natural world as well as being surrounded by some of the densest lion populations in the whole of East Africa.

After spending a few days in awe of the Great Wildebeest Migration its time to leave the majestic Masai Mara and fly south to the beautiful Kenyan coast for the next instalment of your migration adventure, this time to go in search of humpback whales as they travel north towards warmer waters searching for suitable places to give birth to their young which are already 15 feet long and can weigh close to a tonne. This impressive whale movement started many months ago in the cold waters of the Antarctic. There are many other species to be seen such as dolphins and sharks so keep your eyes peeled.

If you are a wildlife fanatic and dream of seeing iconic species, this is a journey not to be missed.

2. Tanzania - Luxury Serengeti Migration Safari

  • Witness one of the greatest wildlife spectacles of the natural world
  • Exploring the world-famous Serengeti during calving season
  • Visit the wildlife amphitheatre of the Ngorongoro Crater
  • See tree climbing lions
  • Experience a walking safari staying overnight in a mobile camp
  • Luxury tented and safari lodge accommodation

Best time to go: Dec to March

Duration: 11 days

If you're looking for an epic wildlife experience, then a safari in Tanzania will certainly tick all the boxes. Every year, millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the Serengeti , in search of fresh water and grazing pastures.

This itinerary follows the migration during calving season, a particularly exciting time as thousands of wildebeest are born, as well as zebras and gazelles. The high numbers of young and inexperienced animals are a magnet for predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs who stalk the plains – making your chances of seeing a chase or kill very high.

Another highlight of this trip is visiting the stunning Ngorongoro Crater with stunning panoramic views from the ridge and a chance to see the Big Five on the crater floor.

Dawn W Zfpum2 G9 T1W Unsplash

As well as 4x4 safaris you’ll also try a canoeing safari, tree-top walks, a night safari and a walking safari sleeping out in the bush – all incredible experiences that will get your adrenalin pumping.

One of the joys of this unique Serengeti migration safari is being totally immersed in the pristine wilderness of one of the most famous national parks in Africa and having the freedom to explore some of the more remote corners where you'll encounter few other visitors.

This is an active eco-safari holiday with a difference, staying in a wonderful mixture of high-end luxury lodges, and close-to-nature tented Green Camps.

20 Epic Safaris for the Ultimate Adventure

By: Author Hazel Scott

In an age where the closest many get to wildlife is scrolling through #Safari on Instagram or mistaking their neighbor’s oversized cat for a mountain lion, the call of the wild is more tempting than ever. Of course, we’re talking about the kind of safari adventures where the only shooting done is with a camera and the only thing being trapped is the beauty of nature in a 4K resolution. Let’s embark on 20 of the world’s ultimate safari destinations: Where the only things being hunted are memories, and the biggest trophy you’ll take home is a deeper appreciation for the planet.

1. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Experience the Great Migration, nature’s own reality show, complete with dramatic river crossings and stealthy predators. Spoiler alert: Not all contestants make it to the final round.

2. Okavango Delta, Botswana

shutterstock 2330522055 1

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Richard Juilliart

Where the water is clearer than your post-safari intentions of going vegan, and elephants double as landscape photographers’ muses.

3. Kruger National Park, South Africa

shutterstock 2146441701 1

A place so rich in biodiversity, it makes New York’s melting pot look like a kiddie pool. Here, the Big Five roam, and tourists in safari hats try to blend in—spoiler: they don’t.

4. Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

shutterstock 2291680941 1

Image Credit: Shutterstock / antony trivet photography

Witness the circle of life in HD, and yes, it’s just as tear-jerking as the Lion King, minus the catchy tunes.

5. Yellowstone National Park, USA

shutterstock 739511683

Discover where the buffalo roam, and why getting too close for a selfie is a hospital trip waiting to happen.

6. Pantanal, Brazil

It’s like the Amazon’s less famous sibling, but with more jaguars, proving once again that it’s the quiet ones you have to watch.

7. Ranthambore National Park, India

shutterstock 1268935471 1

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Sourabh Bharti

Come for the tigers, stay because you’ve accidentally wandered into a monkey’s territory and it’s now holding your camera hostage.

8. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

shutterstock 1959868012

Trek through a forest so dense, even Google Maps throws its hands up and says, “You’re on your own, buddy.”

9. Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

shutterstock 1453313555 1

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Laverne Nash

The only place where iguanas look like they’re plotting world domination and tortoises are revered like slow-moving, wise old sages.

10. Madagascar

shutterstock 256089775 1

Where the wildlife is as unique as the last season of your favorite show—amazing to watch but impossible to explain to someone who’s never seen it.

11. Chobe National Park, Botswana

shutterstock 417719062 1

Boasting an elephant population so large, you’ll start to wonder who’s actually observing whom.

12. Amazon Rainforest, Multiple Countries

shutterstock 2052805004 1

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Valentin Ayupov

The ultimate “choose your own adventure” book, where every decision leads you deeper into nature’s untamed heart (and possibly into a piranha’s mouth).

13. Etosha National Park, Namibia

shutterstock 2011804925 1

Image Credit: Shutterstock / R.M. Nunes

A salt pan so vast, it’s like nature’s own infinity pool, minus the luxury and plus the lions.

14. Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

shutterstock 1610696830 1

Image Credit: Shutterstock / bart acke

Where you can witness elephants taking mud baths, which is surprisingly more graceful than most humans in a spa.

15. Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

shutterstock 1108826132 1

Image Credit: Shutterstock / John Michael Vosloo

Leopards, elephants, and bears—oh my! It’s like the island took the concept of biodiversity and just ran with it.

16. Jim Corbett National Park, India

pexels gourav kashyap 20849068

Image Credit: Pexels / Gourav Kashyap

Named after a legendary tiger hunter who turned conservationist because even he couldn’t deny the appeal of seeing a tiger in the wild, not on a wall.

17. Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

shutterstock 1963782052 1 1

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Holger Metzger

Home to mountain gorillas who have mastered the art of the “do not disturb” look better than any hotel guest.

18. Denali National Park, USA

shutterstock 1084846235

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Agnieszka Bacal

Where you’re more likely to encounter a bear than decent cell service, reminding you there’s more to life than streaming.

19. Kangaroo Island, Australia

shutterstock 2265566163

It’s like Australia decided to create a VIP section for its most iconic wildlife. VIP stands for Very Important Possums, obviously.

20. Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, USA/Canada

shutterstock 2134823999 1

A place so remote, your biggest concern will be whether the polar bears consider your parka high fashion or a snack.

Shoot!

Remember, in the great game of safari, the only winning shot is the one captured on camera, contributing to conservation efforts and the ongoing battle to protect these magnificent creatures from the horrors of big game hunting.
