Mississippi woman walks, talks with snakes, camels and kangaroos. You can, too.

Have you ever wanted to have a coatimundi, a kookaburra or a kinkajou?

Arianna LeVine has. But she has taken her love of animals one step further. She actually owns one — or maybe even a few — exotic animals.

The 29-year-old from Lamar County has a large number of pets of a variety that many people would only dream of having.

Visitors to her home might be greeted by a zebra, a potbellied pig or even a camel as they wander up the private road not too far from Purvis' city limits.

If you look around you might see a couple African sulcata tortoises. You can't miss them. They're pretty big. LeVine said they're the third largest species in the world. 

"They live a long time and get very big," she said. "Also, they need a large habitat and a heated area. They can’t tolerate below 60 (degrees)."

Step inside the aviary built in the back of the house where LeVine lives with her parents Mark and Sylvia LeVine, and visitors will find a number of parrots in a variety of colors. Most likely guests will meet Perry, a blue parrot that likes to get cozy with guests.

"I use the parrots as an example of why you probably shouldn't get one as a pet," LeVine said. "Or why you need to research (before getting one)."

Parrots can live 60-80 years "and they are about as smart as a 3-year-old child," she said, so it is a lifetime commitment and then some. 

And the birds chew up everything they can get their beaks on. They are intelligent animals and need a lot of enrichment, LeVine said.

"They are not animals that need to spend all day in a cage," she said.

LeVine had parrots as pets long before her menagerie grew into the exotic animal collection she has today, but she started acquiring exotic varieties about three years ago.

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” French novelist Anatole France, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1921.

That passion for animals has grown significantly over the last few years and now LeVine is sharing her love of animals through educational tours and animal encounters.

She also will bring some of the animals out for hands-on presentations at a variety of events.

"People come in and have a good experience," she said.

Paulette LeBlanc of Hattiesburg surprised her grandchildren with a trip to SafARI TAILS on a school holiday in January.

She took her grandchildren, who were 9 and 10 at the time, and they got to see and do more than they had expected.

"It was very personal, very educational," she said. "I was impressed with the tour, impressed with how clean and nice the enclosures were. I was extremely impressed with the whole setup."

LeBlanc said she discovered SafARI TAILS through someone else who had been there.

"I want to take them to things and experience things that are out of the norm," she said. "We went to Florida to swim with manatees. Knowing that I had them only one afternoon, I asked for recommendations."

At SafARI  TAILS (teaching about animals in live shows) , guests might have the opportunity to hold a sloth or snake or even a scorpion while they learn about LeVine's pets.

"I wanted to start my own animal education program," she said. "I wanted to teach everyone about the misunderstood. Even though we have pretty animals, my main goal is to focus on the misunderstood."

LeVine said people are afraid of snakes, lizards and other unusual creatures because they don't know much about them. She loves to see visitors begin to feel more comfortable around the reptiles, which are virtually harmless.

"I want to teach them to love the unloved," she said. "You only fear what you don't understand."

She said she tries to get people who are afraid of snakes to hold one to see it isn't as bad as they think.

"I live for that moment," she said. "If I can change just one person's mind about that, it's been amazing."

Outside there are more enclosures for the many other animals that live at SafARI TAILS. The coatimundi have plenty of room to run and play. Lenny the ring-tailed lemur tries to persuade visitors to give him a treat.

A colony of rabbits have their own multilevel mansion, designed especially for them, with a chandelier that would please any bunny. 

A couple monitor lizards have their own private saunas and venture outdoors when the weather is nice.

A pair of kangaroos and an albino wallaby fill another large enclosure where they bask in the sun or hop to their hearts' content. They also have rooms that are heated or cooled as needed since Mississippi weather isn't always suitable for exotic pets.

Three camels — two dromedary and a bactrian — and a zebra are the largest animals in LeVine's collection. 

"(LeVine's dad) was out on the tractor," LeBlanc said. "Everywhere her dad went, the camels were following him, just like puppies."

Mark LeVine oversees care of the camels. Sylvia LeVine enjoys taking care of the kangaroos. Arianna LeVine's favorites are the "unloved" — snakes, lizards and arachnids.

Her pet collection doesn't end there. She has a sloth, a hairy armadillo and a fennec fox, too.

LeVine said she has always been an animal lover.

"I usually tell everyone my first word was 'ish' for fish," she said. "It wasn't Mom or Dad."

She wanted to go to veterinary school, but when she went to college, she discovered it wasn't what she wanted to do.

She studied at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she did some salamander research and studied herpetology — reptiles and amphibians.

She worked at a veterinary clinic and the Hattiesburg Zoo.

"I loved doing the educational tours," she said.

In the meantime, her home was becoming somewhat of a zoo in itself. LeVine doesn't breed animals and although she isn't a rescue, has taken in a few unwanted parrots and reptiles.

She and her parents spend much of their time caring for the animals and offering educational tours — by appointment only. They also host birthday parties and other events.

"You can tell she is personally involved with and invested in each of the animals," LeBlanc said. "Whatever questions (the grandchildren) asked, she answered. She explained to them these are not animals you keep in your backyard."

Caring for so many animals isn't a piece of cake.

The animals are given high-quality food and are socialized so they are able to be around people. They get the best care possible. Caring for the animals is expensive.

The tours and T-shirt sales help pay for their care, and a brick paver fundraiser campaign was launched in April. Anyone can buy a brick to help support the SafARI TAILS experience.

LeVine, who also works at Anatomies, said she and her parents don't take vacations or go on overnight stays since no one else is trained to care for the animals.

"It's not glamorous," she said. "My whole life revolves around the animals. We don't have hired staff. We're not open to the public — it's by appointment only. It takes a lot of work to prepare for an event. It's a labor of love."

For instance, when the kangaroos were babies, LeVine and her mother would carry them in pouches when they went shopping.

"They don’t make great pets for the average person who works," she said. "There's a reason they are sweet. They have been raised and socialized as babies."

Imagine a team of dedicated animal caretakers who work tirelessly to provide love, care, and support to all the animals in their care. From feeding and grooming to medical care and enrichment activities, this staff goes above and beyond to ensure the well-being of each furry, feathered, or scaly friend. This is a perfect example of Arianna and her staff!! And the animals themselves are truly extraordinary! They each have their own unique stories and personalities. It's truly incredible to witness the bond between the staff and the animals😊 Thank you Safari Tails, we will be back!!!

I went for their Valentines event and it was a blast. It was my wife's birthday present and we couldn't have been more pleased! The people who run it are so friendly and knowledgeable. And there is such a broad selection of animals that there is a surprise around every corner! I highly suggest this to anyone who is ANY type of animal lover! There's something for everyone!

We did the sloth encounter for my sister's birthday. The facility was very clean and well laid out. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. You can tell she loves the animals and is passionate to educate people about them. We had plenty of time to interact with the animals and never felt rushed. We plan on going back and doing the full tour.

7 of us… 5,7,8,12,13,19 and considerably older than 19… had an absolute blast today. As any parent knows all too well, the times you have to make memories are so fleeting. We made the best memories. The animals are amazing, Arianna is so kind and knowledgeable, the grounds are beautiful. We will be going back!! What a wonderful experience!!

This place is great! They have a large variety of animals and the opportunity to hold and pet most of them. The young lady that took us around was very friendly and knowledgeable. You can tell she loved all these animals. The animals were in great health. The kids had a fantastic time. I promise you will love it if you go. This place is amazing!!!!! It's ran by Safari Ari!!! And her mom and dad. I've never seen a family more dedicated to their animals/companions. All the animals are super socialized, and friendly. My personal favorite is their Blue Macaw. They offer amazing tours, and have great prices. They also come to you for birthday parties! You can't get much better than that. They deserve credit for all their hard work and bringing education to children about wild animals. Ps their snakes are HUGE!!!! 🐍 🐍

A great experience of up-close and hands-on animal interaction. These folks do a great job of explaining each animal and how to safely be a part of their world. I enjoyed seeing their enclosures nearly as much as the animals themselves. Everything has been well thought out. Keep up the great work. We'll be back again.

Went here for the Christmas event and it was wonderful. We've never been before, and this was a cheaper option for the first time. My sons loved the snakes and tarantula and we will go back for a regular tour for sure!

This year, three new safari outfitters entered the top 10 that weren't on last year's list. Customization options and personalized service were key for travelers. The "passionate" teams at Extraordinary Journeys (No. 2) took the time to understand what guests were hoping to get out of their safari experience and curate itineraries that were nothing short of "magical." One also called out the thoughtful conveniences — like car services and dayrooms in Nairobi — saying they added an elevated level of comfort that wasn't anticipated but "was a godsend."

The challenges of traveling during a global pandemic were also assuaged by the top companies, which, a reader, said addressed "every single one of [their] concerns and questions…before it came to mind," especially in a destination that can feel "complicated." One traveler complimented Extraordinary Journeys for making all the "intimidating" and "ever-changing rules" so "seamless."
