Where do I download an older version of Safari for Windows

I need a specific version of Safari using WebKit 525.27; I have tracked it to Safari 3.2.1. The first Google hit on Apple points to:

However all the download links direct me to Safari 5. Are my only options to either build it myself from webkit.org or download it from an Internet archive like oldapps ?

I know this question has already been answered, but I like to give people options. Another option is filehippo.com. They have every version of a lot of programs out there including popular items such as Safari. Here is the link that would be relevant to this question. Below are some of the other very popular downloads that Filehippo has.

The Mac versions appear to go back to 1.3.1.

While you have some options, they’re a bit limited. Continue reading to learn more about Safari on an old Mac.

How to Update Safari on an Old Mac

If you need to update Safari on an old Mac, unfortunately, Safari is connected to whatever version of macOS you’re using . If you are unable to update to the latest version of macOS, you will only be able to use the version of Safari that supports your operating system. However, there is a way to check to see if you can update Safari.

1. Check for Safari Update

If you want to check to see if you can update Safari, then you will want to check your System Preferences/Settings the same way you would if you were updating macOS. Note that the photos below are just examples of the steps you will take.

Unfortunately, this is likely to be your only option in terms of specifically using Safari on your Old Mac.

2. Use a Third-Party Browser

Apple has now released the third  iOS 18 public beta.

The latest iOS 18 public beta brings refinements to the Photos app's major overhaul, like the removal of the carousel, and a new feature to Safari, nicknamed the "Thanos snap" because of it's design, that allows you to remove distractions, like advertisements and videos, from websites in your web browser.

It's simple to download and install iOS 18. All you need to do is sign up on  Apple's Beta Software Program website , and you'll be on your way to becoming a beta tester from the comfort of your couch. 

You're probably aware that the iOS 18 beta has been available to developers  since June. However, not everyone wants to run the developer beta, because, well, it's for developers and is usually less stable than a public beta. Ultimately, both beta versions are not as stable as the general public iOS 18 release, but that won't drop until fall, and you may not want to wait until then to try iOS 18.

First, does your iPhone even support iOS 18?

Next, a warning...

A public beta is typically more stable than a developer beta -- but it's still a beta, which means you may deal with bugs and other critical issues that could negatively affect your phone. If you have a spare iPhone in your drawer somewhere, use that to run any iOS 18 beta, whether it's the developer or public version.

However, in my personal experience, it's usually fine to run a public beta on your main phone. You may encounter a bug here and there, maybe a function in a third-party app doesn't work exactly as intended, because obviously it's not yet optimized for any iOS beta software. But it's never crippling, just maybe a little bit annoying, and if you don't mind that, running the iOS 18 public beta on the iPhone you use every day shouldn't be a big deal.

Also, before you think of updating to iOS 18, first update to the latest iOS 17 version (currently 17.5.1) and then back up your device. Go to Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup and hit Back Up Now .

If you don't have enough cloud storage for a backup, use your computer.

How to download the iOS 18 public beta on your iPhone

Now that you've backed up your phone, you can download the iOS 18 public beta. Here's what you need to do:

1. On your iPhone, go to the  Apple Beta Software Program  website and sign in (if you're already a member) or sign up for the program. You need an Apple ID of course. If you're signing up for the first time, follow the prompts.

2. Next, tap the iOS tab and you should see more information about the iOS 18 public beta.

3. Under Get Started, hit the blue  enroll your iOS device  link. 

4. Now go to  Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates  and choose the iOS 18 public beta to install.

5. Finally, go to  Settings > General > Software Update  and install the iOS 18 public beta. 

The iOS 18 public beta download is over-the-air.

Once your phone reboots, you should be running the first iOS 18 public beta.

Apple to patch decades-old ‘0.0.0.0 Day’ vulnerability in upcoming Safari update

Apple, along with Google, will be addressing a browser security vulnerability that’s been around for nearly 20 years, according to a report by Forbes (paid subscription required). The breach is being presented by cybersecurity firm Oglio at Def Con later this week and involves an IP address with a special purpose.

Devices connected to the internet use IP addresses for device and location identification, and the IP address 0.0.0.0 is used for special circumstances (it’s usually used as a stand-in address until the actual address is available). Oglio researcher found that hackers have been exploiting the way Safari, Chrome, and Firefox handle queries to a 0.0.0.0 IP address. According to Forbes, the browsers send the queries “to other IP addresses, including ‘localhost,’ a server on a network or computer that is typically private and is often used to test in-development code.” A hacker can send a request to the address to get private data.

Forbes confirmed with Apple that Safari in macOS Sequoia will block any website attempting to contact the 0.0.0.0 IP address. Google has a blog post that describes its plans to do a similar thing with Chrome. Mozilla told Forbes that it does not have plans to block 0.0.0.0 queries in Mozilla, but the company is researching the issue.

Since the fix is based on Safari and not OS based, it will be included in Safari 18 when it becomes available for older versions of macOS, such as Sonoma and Ventura.

How to protect yourself from hacker attacks

Apple has protections in place within macOS and the company releases security patches through OS updates, so it’s important to install them when they are available. If Apple pulls back an update, the company will reissue it as soon as it is properly revised with corrections.
