10 Essential Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Honolulu, Hawaii

Table of Contents

On December 7th of the year 1941, the naval base Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii would never be the same again. That day, which “is a day that will live in infamy” Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese Navy Air Service early in the morning.

The Pearl Harbor attack killed over 2,400 people, injured 1,000 (including civilians), and destroyed over 20 American Navy vessels located on the base. These vessels had 8 battleships and over 300 airplanes on them. After the gruesome event at Pearl Harbor, war was declared on Japan.

Because of the significance of the attack, Pearl Harbor is a highly visited site for tourists and locals alike in Honolulu. Let’s review a little bit more about Pearl Harbor for context then dive into the 10 essential tips for visiting Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii.

zoomed out photo of the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor

About Pearl Harbor: an Overview

Pearl Harbor is located basically in the center of the Pacific Ocean. It’s approximately 2,000 miles from mainland United States (lower 48 contiguous) and about 4,000 miles from Japan.

The base at Pearl Harbor, when attacked was relatively undefended as no one believed that the Japanese would attack here. The Japanese attack plan was simple, to destroy the Pacific Fleet so the Americans couldn’t fight back.

Over the course of the two hour attack, the plan was successful. All battleships except the USS Arizona and USS Utah were salvaged and repaired from the attack. However, the United States was able to rebound quickly as all of the aircraft carriers were away from the base at the time of the attack and the onshore resources (oil storage, repair shops, shipyards, and submarine docks) were all intact.

December 8th, the day after the attack the United States Congress approved the declaration of war on Japan. Three days later, Japan’s allies Germany and Italy declared war against the United States. Two years after the World War II conflict had begun, the United States entered the conflict. Pearl Harbor was significant as it was the catalyst for the involvement in the war.

Things to do at Pearl Harbor

Before visiting the Pearl Harbor National Memorial site, I will cover what to know in the subsequent tips I share to hopefully have you feel prepared prior to your visit.

Pearl Harbor is denoted as a National Historic Monument and is managed by the NPS (National Park Service).  Be sure to bring your National Park Passport to stamp it! Once you arrive at Pearl Harbor in the Aloha Court area you can receive more information there but it’s always better to be prepared!

There are many different Pearl Harbor attractions and things you can do while visiting Pearl Harbor so let’s review the many different things to help plan your Pearl Harbor Itinerary!

USS Arizona Memorial

To get to the memorial you will have to take a boat ride. The boats are operated by the United States Navy. If wind and wave conditions become unsafe, they have the authority to suspend, modify, or cancel regular operations.

Regular operations or the USS Arizona Memorial Program run at 45 minute intervals if you don’t make a reservation, but the time slots for reservations are at 15 minute intervals. Both include a boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, 15 minutes to spend in the memorial, and a boat ride back to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

If you book your time spot in advance, it is advised to show up an hour prior to your time slot. You can book these USS Arizona Memorial Tickets (or rather guaranteed time slot) online in advance.

Visiting the memorial, and the exhibit galleries explained below as well as the memorial theater show is free of charge. Donations are always accepted.

Review Exhibit Galleries

There are two exhibit galleries available, “Road to War” and “Attack”. These two immersive exhibits give visitors to Pearl Harbor a better idea of the sights, sounds, and specific events before the attack and then the aftermath. There is historic memorabilia, battle artifacts, and much more to experience.

A model of the USS Arizona Memorial compared to what the original ship looked like prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater

The memorial theater adds additional context to the exhibit galleries of the before and after events of the attack on Pearl Harbor. This is also a free attraction in addition to visiting the USS Arizona Memorial.

Wayside Exhibit

As you get off of the boat after visiting the USS Arizona Memorial, the wayside exhibit snakes around the waterfront area. There is signage and additional information on landmarks that are before you and their significance. This is aimed at connecting the past, and its events, with the present.

View of the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor from the wayside exhibit on shore.

Remembrance Circle

Near the wayside exhibit but farther inland front the water is the remembrance circle monument. This is a monument recognizing and remembering those who were killed in the December 7, 1941 attacks at Pearl Harbor. There are men, women, and children’s names inscribed recognized as lives lost both military and civilian at Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor Historic Sites

Additional Pearl Harbor Historic Sites are NOT managed by the NPS (National Park Service.) These include the Battleship USS Missouri Memorial (USS bowfin submarine), the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, Pearl Harbor Pacific Aviation Museum, and the USS Oklahoma Memorial which is located on  Ford Island. Another additional charge is for an audio tour.

All of these have additional costs but are perfect for WWII history buffs or those interested in the United States military.

Bookstore & Shop

On your way out, check out the bookstore and shop for something to bring home with you to remember your visit. There are many different things to choose from. However, they do not have a specific sticker for your National Parks Passport. (I looked!) This is near the entry and exit to the other items listed above.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Get there early

With a few exceptions, (Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day) Pearl Harbor is open to visit all other days of the year from 7 AM to 5 PM.

Getting there early as close to opening time as possible (especially in high tourist season) will result in the best visit with the least amount of people. We arrived around 8:30 AM in late September and it was already getting very busy.

Keep in mind that tour buses and groups also come closer to mid day and afternoon.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Book in Advance?

You aren’t required to book in advance. But keep in mind that Pearl Harbor is one of the top three visited locations on the island of Oahu. However, especially during times of peak traffic, the National Park Service recommends it.

There isn’t really a time of year that’s “slow” at Pearl Habor, but booking in advance is essential if you plan to visit during the summer, winter holidays, and spring break.

During times of high traffic, standby and on-demand availability could be limited or not available at all.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Transportation & Parking

Parking in the lot is a $7 fee. You can pay it at the kiosk in the Aloha Court area upon entering.

However, you can easily navigate to Pearl Harbor using public transportation. There is a bus stop right out front. Here’s a Pearl Harbor Map to acquaint yourself with where everything is for planning.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Be Bag Conscious

Bags are not allowed inside. It’s best to leave it safely concealed and out of sight in your vehicle or leave it at home. If you don’t feel comfortable doing either of those options, there is a bag storage option near the parking lot that you can use for a fee.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Tickets and tours

Depending on when you plan to visit, booking a time slot for the USS Arizona Memorial is a great idea! You don’t have to visit with a tour, but if you’re in Honolulu without a car a tour is a great way to explore and visit Pearl Harbor, have reliable transportation, and possibly explore other attractions on Oahu beyond Pearl Harbor. Check out some of the best tours to explore Oahu without a car !

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Know Your Plan

Ensure you have a rough idea of everything you want to see while visiting Pearl Harbor. Ensure you have plenty of time to see them. And secure any admissions and timeslots in advance to be certain you’re able to see them.

Most visitors want to see the USS Arizona Memorial and experience the free exhibits, Remembrance Monument, and the Wayside exhibit. This will take roughly three hours, but anything additional adds on more time.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Sun Protection

Hawaii is a sunny and warm destination year round. No matter what time of year you visit, be sure you bring a hat, sunglasses, and apply sunscreen as well as bring additional sunscreen with you.

Pearl Harbor has a lot of direct sunlight, not much shade, plus is near water so the intensity of sun exposure is higher. Plan accordingly!

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Be Respectful!

Pearl Harbor is still an active military base.

Listen, learn, observe, be thoughtful and quiet. Especially when visiting the USS Arizona Memorial as it’s a site where many brave Americans lost their lives.

Pearl Harbor aims to ensure the dignity and respect of those Americans whose lives were lost as well as their families who have lost loved ones here. Please keep this in mind when visiting!

What is the best day of the week to visit Pearl Harbor?

During the week and offseason, it’s generally quieter to visit Pearl Harbor. I would avoid weekends if you can. Summer, winter break, and spring break are typically the busiest times regardless of the day of the week. Outside of those time periods, early to mid week Monday-Wednesday are on average less busy.

Can you visit Pearl Harbor without a tour?

Yes, you can visit Pearl Harbor independently. However, for many people booking a tour from their accommodation to Pearl Harbor and back is the most convenient option for them. You will also receive additional context from a local guide’s perspective. Check out some of my recommended tours if you don’t have a car for your time on Oahu.

Can I bring a water bottle to Pearl Harbor?

Yes! It is recommended to bring your own water bottle. There are facilities where you can fill it up. Help to create a sustainable earth by using reusable water bottles whenever possible! Pearl Harbor can be warm since it isn’t well-shaded, so you will definitely need water during your visit.

How much time do you need at Pearl Harbor?

At least three hours. Three hours will allow you the time to visit the USS Arizona Memorial, see the exhibits, view the memorial video, and take a walk around the grounds to see the wayside exhibit and Remembrance Circle. If you choose to do any additional tours or experiences, add more time.

Do you need a tour to visit Pearl Harbor?

No. You can visit Pearl Harbor on your own. However, for many people booking a tour from their accommodation to Pearl Harbor and back is the most convenient option for them. Check out some of my recommended tours if you don’t have a car for your time on Oahu. You can also get to Pearl Harbor using public transportation.

Do you need tickets to visit Pearl Harbor?

Yes and No. You do not need to purchase tickets in advance. However, if you’re visiting during summer (June-August) it’s best to secure them in advance. There is a processing fee for the timeslot for the USS Arizona Memorial, but the experience is otherwise free. Especially if you’re visiting at peak times this will ensure your spot in line.

View out up above the USS Arizona Memorial with the sun shining down over the raised United States flag

What to wear to a Pearl Harbor tour?

There is no official dress code, but it is a memorial so dress with respect. Do not wear swimwear flip flops. It’s also in a lot of direct sunlight so ensuring you’re covered for sun exposure is important as well. It’s not strict where you will be denied admission but just be mindful of your clothing decisions.

Do you need reservations to see Pearl Harbor?

Not always. During peak travel periods (summer, winter vacations, and spring break) they are highly advised so you won’t spend the majority of your time waiting in line. It’s also not guaranteed that there will be standby availability. It’s best to make a reservation to ensure you’re able to experience it.

Visiting the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is home to many historical sites, but the USS Arizona Memorial stands out as one of the most touching.

It’s not just a place on a map; it’s a place that tells a deep story of bravery, loss, and remembrance.

The USS Arizona Memorial is the most well-known spot at Pearl Harbor.

It’s built directly over the final resting place of the USS Arizona ship, which was tragically sunk during the 1941 attack.

The sailors and marines on board that day are still within the ship, making this memorial incredibly significant.

Now, to get to the memorial, you’ll hop on a boat ride. As the boat gently moves across the harbor, you might feel a mix of excitement and reflection.

The water around you holds so much history, and soon, you’ll be floating right above a part of it.

As you approach, you’ll notice a stunning white structure that seems to float gracefully on the water. That’s the USS Arizona Memorial.

Once inside, it’s almost like the world goes quiet. The atmosphere is calm, peaceful, and you can sense the reverence of the place.

You might feel a lump in your throat or even shed a tear thinking about the events of that fateful day and the brave souls who were there.

Tip: When you’re on the memorial, try to find a quiet spot and just listen. Often, there’ll be a guide or park ranger sharing stories about the ship, the attack, and the people involved. These tales can bring history to life, making your visit even more impactful.

In the end, the USS Arizona Memorial is more than just a tourist spot; it’s a place of reflection and honor.

When you visit, take a moment to pay respects, think about the stories, and appreciate the sacrifices made for freedom.

Other Must-See Monuments and Attractions

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial has a lot more to offer in addition to the USS Arizona Memorial.

Image of Oahu, Hawaii, USA. - January 10, 2020: Pearl Harbor. Gray USS Missouri together with USS Arizona Memorial side by side on blueish water and under blue cloudscape. Airfield tower, Green foliage belt.

There’s the USS Battleship Missouri, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, and the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum (formerly the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum).

USS Battleship Missouri

This huge ship has a big history! It’s where World War II officially ended. You can take a tour, walk the decks, and see where the surrender documents were signed.

We usually like to take a photo on the deck in front of the giant cannons because it really puts things in perspective!

USS Battleship Missouri Cannons

One of the most fascinating exhibits inside the USS Battleship Missouri is Divine Wind: Kamikaze and the Battle for the Pacific .

It’s a huge display of letters written by Japanese kamikaze pilots before they did their mission at Pearl Harbor and it’s a perspective that we don’t normally hear about when learning about WWII.

Tip: Wear comfy shoes because there’s a lot to explore on this massive ship!

There’s also a place to get grab-and-go food if you need to refuel. We always stop here to get fresh Dole Whip. It’s the perfect way to cool down after walking around the USS Battleship Missouri in direct sunlight.

Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

If you love planes, this is your spot. The museum has old warplanes and tells stories about the pilots who flew them. There are hands-on exhibits and even a flight simulator!

Outside of the main museum area, there’s a cool stand-alone exhibit about Bob Hope. There’s also a separate hangar where you can see the actual bullet holes from the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Tip: Ask questions. The staff here know a ton and can share some awesome facts!

There’s also a sit-down restaurant inside the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum that has fun, retro paintings on the wall. And the food is classic American stuff like burgers and fries.

Image of the Ford Island Control Tower at Pearl Harbor

One of the newest things to do at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum is climb up the Ford Island Control Tower. You’ll take an elevator up a few floors and then climb up the spiral staircase to the observation deck.

The views from the top are really cool!

Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum (formerly the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum)

Have you ever daydreamed about being on a real submarine? Dive into history at the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum!

This isn’t just any submarine – it’s a window to World War II.

Climbing inside, you’ll see exactly how sailors lived and worked during those intense times. It’s like hopping in a time machine!

USS Bowfin Submarine at Pearl Harbor

Walking through the narrow hallways and tiny rooms, you’ll be amazed at how sailors managed in such close quarters.

But a quick heads-up: Watch your head! Submarines weren’t built for tall folks, so there are low ceilings and tight spots.

While exploring cool spots like the Bowfin is super fun, remember this isn’t just about the ‘wow’ factor. It’s about the stories of bravery and sacrifice from years ago.

So, as you wander through, take a moment to think about the heroes who once stood where you stand.

What to Wear to Pearl Harbor

It’s really important to remember that many people lost their lives at Pearl Harbor and it’s a place to pay your respects to the fallen soldiers.

This means you should skip the flip-flops and beach attire and wear something a bit more respectful. My husband usually wears an Aloha shirt and I usually wear a long dress or lightweight pants.

Military Visitors

Military visitors to the memorial are within the bounds of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and military regulations relating to military dress are enforced by Navy personnel.

According to COMNAVREG Hawaii Instruction 1020.2N, military visitors in uniform are required to dress in Class B or better in order to gain access to the USS Arizona Memorial.

Battle dress uniform is not allowed on the memorial, though it is allowed throughout the visitor center and at sites on Ford Island. However, military visitors are welcome to wear civilian attire when visiting.

Logistics of Visiting Pearl Harbor

So you’re ready to dive into the history of Pearl Harbor? Great! But first, let’s figure out some of the practical stuff so your trip goes smoothly.

Getting to Pearl Harbor

Public transport.

If you’re staying in Honolulu, there’s a public bus that goes directly to Pearl Harbor. It’s affordable and convenient, but remember to check the schedule !

Driving yourself? It’s pretty easy to get to Pearl Harbor from Waikiki . There’s a big parking lot right outside the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, and guess what? It’s free! But try to come early to grab a good spot.

Do not take the “Hickam AFB / Pearl Harbor” exit. This will take you to the active military base, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, not to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

Many tour companies offer trips to Pearl Harbor. This can be a great choice because they handle all the driving, and often, the guide will share fun facts on the way! THIS is the tour that I recommend .

What You Can (and Can’t) Bring to Pearl Harbor

No big bags.

Bags bigger than 1.5″ X 2.25″ X 5.5″ aren’t allowed. This includes things like purses, backpacks, and camera bags. You are allowed to bring in clear bags like THIS ONE if you need to.

Bag Storage

Near the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center entrance, there’s a place to store your bags for a small fee. You can use this same storage for all the Pearl Harbor sites you visit.

Just remember, Pearl Harbor is very serious about safety, so all the rules are there to protect everyone. We always store our bags here.

Food & Drinks

You can bring food and non-alcoholic drinks to the area, but you’ll need to carry them in your hands if you won’t have a bag.

Inside the museums, theaters, and on certain ships and the USS Arizona Memorial, you can only have water.

And a quick tip? Please take all trash with you when you leave to help keep the place clean.

Medical Bags

If you have a health condition and need a special bag, you’ll need to tell security. They’ll check the bag to make sure it only has the medical stuff you need.

The final decision is up to the Park Security Rangers, so give yourself some extra time for this.

On-Site Stuff

Where to eat at pearl harbor.

Feeling hungry? There’s a snack shop near the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center with sandwiches, drinks, and more. You can enjoy your meal while looking out over the harbor.

Laniakea Café at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum is a casual restaurant with a menu of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and island favorites. There is also a kids’ menu and a selection of sides and beverages.

There’s also a snack shop outside the USS Battleship Missouri with lunch items and Dole Whip.

There are also lots of places to eat near Pearl Harbor if you want more options.

Yep, there are clean bathrooms available for when nature calls. There are options near all the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites.

Accessibility

Pearl Harbor is wheelchair-friendly, and they’ve thought about visitors with other needs too. If you have special requirements, just ask a staff member for help.

Things to Remember

There are a few rules to keep the place respectful and safe. Big bags or backpacks aren’t allowed, so leave them in your car or at your hotel.

Also, remember this is a place of remembrance. It’s a good idea to keep things quiet and respectful.

Making the Most of Your Visit to Pearl Harbor

Ready to explore Pearl Harbor? Here’s how to make sure your visit is both fun and meaningful!

Guided vs. Self-Guided Tours

Guided pearl harbor tours.

With a guide, you get to hear stories and facts that you might miss on your own. The guide can answer questions and show you special spots. The downside? You have to stick to their schedule.

Self-Guided Tours

If you like to explore at your own pace, this might be for you. You can spend as much time as you want at each place. But remember, you’ll need to do some extra homework to know what you’re looking at.

Prep with Some Reading

Want to understand things better? It’s a great idea to read up before your visit. There are lots of books and websites about Pearl Harbor.

You’ll get to know the stories behind the places you’ll see, which makes everything more interesting.

Chat with Veterans or Docents

If you see any veterans (people who served in the military) or docents (trained guides) around, don’t be shy! Say hello and ask them questions.

They have personal stories and insights that can make your visit extra special. Imagine hearing about Pearl Harbor from someone who was actually there!

In the end, whether you go with a guide, read a bunch of books, or chat with veterans, the most important thing is to be curious.

Ask questions, imagine what it was like back then, and remember the stories of bravery and sacrifice. That’s how you make your Pearl Harbor visit truly unforgettable.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: How to Book USS Arizona Tickets, How Long You Need & More

This post may contain some affiliate links, which means I’ll make a little money on anything you choose to purchase. But of course, I only recommend my absolute favorites to you. Thank you for supporting the brands that make HulaLand possible.

For most people, if there’s one “not to be missed experience” on Oahu, visiting Pearl Harbor is it. It’s educational, it’s moving, it’s insightful. And there’s surprisingly a LOT to see and do here.

pearl harbor tour tips

Before I go on, let’s start with this…this isn’t a post where I’m going to try to convince you that Pearl Harbor is worth visiting and tell you all the reasons why you should spend some of your vacation time there. I actually get very few questions about whether Pearl Harbor is a “must see” on Oahu.

And here’s why…most people fall into one of two camps: 1) It’s one of the major reasons they’re going to Hawaii or they at least couldn’t imagine going to Hawaii and NOT visiting Pearl Harbor or 2) People who wouldn’t really even think twice about spending one of their vacation days doing something other than tropical island activities.

pearl harbor tour tips

Neither is really wrong, but you pretty much know who you are.

On my first trip to Oahu, I was there less than 48 hours and we spent part of it at Pearl Harbor. On the other hand, I have MANY friends who have been on multiple weeklong vacations to Oahu and never been to Pearl Harbor. We’re both happy : )

So obviously, this post is for those of you who are planning to visit Pearl Harbor.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor

Most people associate Pearl Harbor with the USS Arizona Memorial, and while it’s definitely the most noteworthy thing to see, there is so much more than just that.

Here’s the lay of the land…

You’ll park at the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center and enter for free. There are no bags allowed so make sure you just bring the essentials.

The Visitors Center is kind of the main hub and it’s where you’ll find information, ticket booths, audio guides, the gift shop, a few small memorials and two museums.

pearl harbor tour tips

The first museum fills you in on what life and the political climate were like in Hawaii in 1941.

The second museum covers the events of December 7, 1941.

pearl harbor tour tips

At the Visitors Center, you can board a boat operated by the Navy to go out to the USS Arizona Memorial.

pearl harbor tour tips

Ideally, you’ll want to book your tickets for this in advance. Tickets are free (there’s a $1 service charge when booked online), but they’re limited and sell out quickly. Tickets are released 8 weeks in advance at 3PM HST. If you miss that booking window, your only option is to show up the day of and wait in the standby line. On the day I visited, people who made standby for my tour time said they waited about an hour. I’ve heard of people waiting only 20 minutes and as long as 3 hours.

pearl harbor tour tips

NOTE: This is a change in procedure from how tickets used to be distributed. You don’t show up in person and get tickets anymore. And, at least right now, they’re also not releasing more tickets the day before to the online reservation system. Pay attention to the current rules because sometimes things change quickly and also if they’re having problems with the dock (it’s a thing), they change up how they do things.

Reserve tickets here in advance to visit the USS Arizona Memorial.

pearl harbor tour tips

Also at the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center, you can purchase tickets to the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum (which includes access to the USS Bowfin) for $22/adult.

pearl harbor tour tips

From the Visitors Center, you can hop on a (free) shuttle that takes you over to Ford Island (an active military base so you can only go on the shuttle) where you can buy tickets for:

pearl harbor tour tips

The USS Missouri (the battleship where the treaty to end WWII was signed) for $35/adult.

pearl harbor tour tips

Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum (including an upgrade option for the Top of the Tower tour where you can access an original air traffic control tower) for  $26/adult.

So that’s four separate “things” you can tour. You can buy a Pearl Harbor Passport for $90/adult which includes admission to everything EXCEPT the USS Arizona, which you’ll either have to reserve separately or wait in line once you arrive.

pearl harbor tour tips

It’s a lot. Really, more than I think you can do in one day.

Unless you are EXTREMELY DEDICATED tourists (who regularly do things like 12 hours in a Disney theme park), I think if you want to see everything you should break it into two days.

I am a “history person” with a pretty high tolerance for museums/tours and after we did the Visitors Center, the USS Arizona and went out to the USS Missouri, I was DONE.

pearl harbor tour tips

So I would recommend going through the two small museums at the Visitors Center, taking the boat out to the USS Arizona, and then picking ONE extra thing to do.

pearl harbor tour tips

As far as which you should pick between the Bowfin, the Missouri, and the Aviation Museum, I think it mostly depends on your interests. They’re all “worth doing” and high quality experiences. If you made me choose, I think I would go with the USS Missouri because it really packs a punch. You pretty much get to walk all over every inch of that ship.

In my mind, the USS Missouri and the USS Bowfin are kind of similar (they’re both WWII era watercraft) so I wouldn’t feel the need to do them both. However, the submarine museum is at the Visitors Center and you don’t need to ride the shuttle so it would simplify the logistics.

You do NOT want to be out on Ford Island at the USS Missouri or the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and mismanage your time and miss your time slot for the boat to the USS Arizona.

I think your choice may come down to if you’re more interested in boats or planes. If it’s boats, go with the USS Missouri. If it’s planes, go with the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and add on the option to go up in the air traffic control tower.

***Want to save major $$$ on your trip to Hawaii? I get asked ALL the time how I’m able to travel so often to Hawaii and stay at really nice resorts. Well, my favorite travel hack is cashing in points to score free airfare and free nights at some of Hawaii’s most high end resorts. Read my full guide on the exact system I use to max out credit card rewards here . Seriously, it’s going to save you soooo much money.

More Tips about Visiting Pearl Harbor

There are lockers you can rent to store bags near the entrance. While I NEVER recommend leaving bags in your car anywhere (especially Hawaii), the parking lot isn’t isolated and there’s a lot of activity, add in the component of the military base, and it doesn’t make it a place where your car is super likely to get broken into. But gain, never leave anything in plain sight. There are also conflicting reports about if clear bags are sometimes allowed inside.

pearl harbor tour tips

If you’re thinking about booking a tour to Pearl Harbor, check double check and triple check that it actually includes access to the USS Arizona, because since they changed up the policy about how the USS Arizona tickets are distributed, most tour companies don’t have access like they used to.

pearl harbor tour tips

If you’re an avid National Parks visitor, don’t forget to bring your passport to collect your stamp. The stamps are outside near the ticket counters not in the gift shop and when I was last there they didn’t have any scraps of paper to use if you forgot your passport.

pearl harbor tour tips

If you’re planning to spend a good part of the day at Pearl Harbor, food options are a little limited. At the Visitors Center there’s a snack stand that serves basically whatever you could find at a gas station. Drinks, chips, candy, premade sandwiches, etc. And there’s usually a hot dog stand near the submarine museum. But that’s it.

pearl harbor tour tips

There were a lot more options at the USS Missouri, including some food trucks and stands.

pearl harbor tour tips

If you want a sit down restaurant (if you’re going to be there all day, you may want a break), you can walk over to Restaurant 604 at the marina. The food is pretty hearty and they have great views.

If you’re only going for half a day, have a big breakfast before you go and then I would plan to have lunch at Aiea Bowl when you leave. It’s a great local spot not too far away.

pearl harbor tour tips

Okay, I’ve saved the most valuable information for last. Pearl Harbor now has OFFICIALLY LICENSED HELLO KITTY MERCHANDISE. Don’t sleep on this! Kitty as Rosie the Riveter! Kitty in a sailor hat! Also a peace crane design. There is some generic Hawaii Hello Kitty merchandise that ABC Stores have a license for, but other than that Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head are the only spots that offer exclusive Hawaii Hello Kitty merch.

Side Note: If you’re looking for a rental car for your trip, I LOVE Discount Hawaii Car Rentals . They’re seriously the only company I ever use. They’ll give you the very best prices, you don’t have to reserve with a credit card or pay until you show up, you can cancel and re-book anytime if you find a better rate, and they usually have a special that adds additional drivers for no fee. It’s a no brainer. Click here to check rates for your trip.

Everything You Need to Know BEFORE You Go to Oahu

Here’s one more really important thing you need to know before your Hawaii trip…

Reservations You Need to Make BEFORE Your Hawaii Trip

You’ve got your airfare, hotel, rental car and your big activities booked, so you should be good to go, right? Wrong!

Travel is BOOMING in Hawaii so a lot of state and national parks used the closure and reopening to institute reservation systems at some of the island’s most popular spots to make things a little more sustainable.

That means that there are now over half a dozen sites (beaches, trailheads, etc.) that require advance reservations. And some sell out well before you arrive on the island so you really need to have some sort of a plan.

I recently saw somebody in a Hawaii travel group post in a panic that they didn’t know they had to make reservations for things in advance…they thought they could just show up and “go with the flow.” I was tempted to say, well, “as long as the flow doesn’t take you somewhere that requires reservations, you can!” ; )

But I don’t want YOU to be that person, so I’ve pulled together a list of all the places you need to reserve entry in advance (plus all the details on booking windows, price, links, etc.) and a handful of popular tourist hotspots that book out really far in advance too.

Haleakala National Park (Maui)

To visit Haleakala National Park for sunrise at the summit, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are required to enter the park gates between 3AM and 7AM (sunrise hours).

Online reservations are $1 per reservation/vehicle PLUS you’ll pay the park entrance fee of $30/vehicle when you arrive (National Park annual passes are also accepted at the gate).

The reservation booking window opens 60 days in advance at 7AM HST. There are also a limited number of tickets released two days before.

You can make one reservation every three days with the same account. So if you want to make reservations for back to back days (in case of weather/conditions), you’ll need to do so with separate accounts (email addresses).

If you can’t get reservations for sunrise, you can enter the park anytime after 7AM without reservations. The summit is spectacular during the day and you don’t need reservations for sunset.

I strongly recommend creating an account before and making sure you’re logged in at 7AM HST because it’s not uncommon for reservations to sell out quickly.

Waianapanapa State Park (Maui)

To visit Maui’s famous black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park on the Road to Hana, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are required to visit the beach and are distributed in windows from 7AM-10AM, 10AM-12:30PM, 12:30PM-3PM, and 3PM-6PM. And they are pretty strict about exiting by the end of your window time (you can arrive anytime within your window).

It’s $5/person to enter plus $10/vehicle to park and those fees are paid when you book your time slot.

Reservations open up 30 days in advance.

Iao Valley State Park (Maui)

To visit the lush, green mountains and hike at Iao Valley State Park, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are offered for 90 minute time slots beginning at 7AM and ending at 6PM. They ask that you arrive within the first 30 minutes of your time slot.

Entry is $5/person plus $10/vehicle to park.

Diamond Head (Oahu)

To hike to the top of Waikiki’s famous Diamond Head, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are offered in two hour increments beginning at 6AM (6AM-8AM, 8AM-10AM, etc.) and ending at 6PM. If you’re parking onsite, they ask that you arrive within the first 30 minutes of your reservation window.

Tip: I recommend booking one of the first two time slots because there isn’t much shade on this hike and it gets pretty hot.

Hanauma Bay (Oahu)

To snorkel at Oahu’s pristine Hanauma Bay, you must make reservations in advance here.

Entry times are staggered in 10 minute increments from 7AM to 1:20PM with roughly 1000 slots being assigned in advance every day.

Reservations can be made two days in advance and they open at 7AM HST. They’re usually gone in minutes (if not seconds).

If you’re unable to get an advanced reservation, you can try for a day of, walk in ticket. They open at 6:45AM and they only have a limited number available. Everyone in your group needs to be present when you purchase your tickets in person.

There are no reservations for parking and it’s first come, first serve. $3/vehicle.

It’s $25/person to snorkel at Hanauma Bay (12 and under, active military, and locals with HI ID are free).

The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is open Wednesday through Sunday (CLOSED MONDAY AND TUESDAY) from 6:45AM-4PM. Last entry is at 1:30PM, the beach is cleared at 3:15PM and you have to leave the facility by 4PM.

Jellyfish patterns can also affect whether or not the bay is open so double check the day before/day of.

USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor (Oahu)

If you want to take the boat tour at Pearl Harbor out to the USS Arizona, it’s recommended to make advance reservations here.

Online reservations are guaranteed a specific boarding time to go out to the USS Arizona. If you’re unable to get an advance reservation, you can wait standby when you arrive. The line could be short (15 minutes or so) or long (hours) and it just depends on the day (if they’re having problems with the loading dock sometimes they don’t take many from the standby line) and the time of day.

Reservations are supposed to open up 60 days in advance, but keep an eye on your exact dates, because lately they’ve actually been opening up about 57ish days in advance???

They also release a small batch of tickets the day before.

The boat ride out to the USS Arizona is free, but it’s $1 to make the reservations online.

They recently started charging $7/vehicle for parking at Pearl Harbor.

Haena State Park / Kalalau Trail (Kauai)

If you want to hike Kauai’s famous Kalalau Trail, you must make advance reservations here. You’ve got three options here:

1) Parking & Entry: This is the most flexible option and also the most limited. THESE RESERVATIONS SELL OUT IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. There are three time slots available: 6:30AM-12:30PM, 12:30PM-5:30PM and 4:30PM to sunset. You can purchase multiple time slots if you want to stay longer. It’s $10/timeslot (parking) plus $5/person and you have to reserve every person when you initially book. Everybody has to arrive in the same car and your ID needs to match the reservation.

2) Shuttle & Entry: If you can’t get parking at the trailhead, there’s also a shuttle option. Shuttle reservations are $35/person (16+), $25/person (ages 4-15), 3 and under can ride free. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes 6:20AM to 6:40PM.

3) Entry Only: If you’re a Hawaiian resident (with HI ID) or someone WITH a Hawaiian resident, you can purchase entry only for $5/person with no advance reservations. Also, if you’re walking or biking to the trailhead you can do this option. But there is NOWHERE to park in the area to walk in. So this really only works for those with bikes or who are staying close enough to walk. They will tow your car if you park outside the designated areas.

The reservation window opens 30 days in advance at 12AM HST. The parking & entry option usually sells out in a minute, but the shuttle availability will last longer.

There are a TON of FAQs here including the possibility of snagging a canceled reservation.

Other Things to Book in Advance

Hawaii is a busy place these days! Besides the state and national parks above, here’s a handful of miscellaneous things you should make reservations for in advance (if they’re on your radar):

Mama’s Fish House (Maui) : The iconic spot is the most popular restaurant in Hawaii and dinner reservations usually start filling up about 6 months in advance (they open up bookings 18 months in advance). Make reservations through their website and if the dates you want are already booked, you can join a waitlist. Most people have pretty good success getting in on the waitlist (even if it’s for lunch).

Old Lahaina Luau (Maui) : Honestly, any luau you’re planning to attend you should book early, but most people are usually shocked how far out the Old Lahaina Luau books out. Book it as soon as you know your dates (I think they open at the six month window). They also have a waitlist.

Kualoa Ranch UTV Tour (Oahu) : Everybody loves Jurassic Park so getting to ride UTVs where they filmed the movies is very popular. The ranch offers a lot of different tours but the UTV tours usually book out a couple of months in advance.

Spa Reservations : If you’re staying at a resort with a spa (or planning on visiting one), don’t wait until you arrive to make your reservations. I’d make them at least a month in advance.

Tee Times : Same for golf, reserve your tee times well in advance.

Dining Reservations : Any “fancy” or resort restaurant is likely to be booked up these days so if you like having a nice dinner every night, make your plans in advance.

Pearl Harbor Tour Details

Our friend, Dan, at Hawaii Tours will tell you more about the tour here:

Your day begins with a morning pickup from your accommodation on Oahu. We provide pick-up and return transportation to the cruise ship pier, Waikiki, and Ko Olina on every tour. Your guide safely brings you to the World War II Valor In the Pacific National Monument, where you will see all of the historical sites in and around Pearl Harbor. The first stop is the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. This area contains many museums you can explore with your personal guide. They will hand out audio tour devices which will provide this tour in many languages. The English versions contain a wide range of stories prepared by the park service. The USS Arizona Memorial is the first major historic site we will visit. There is a short film with historical footage to view before going out to see the USS Arizona and the Memorial that lays over it. The boat takes a bit of a tour around the harbor so you can see different angles and get up close to the Battleship Missouri. Docking back at the Visitor Center, your guide meets you for a trip across the grounds to see the inside of a submarine, the USS Bowfin. See how the ʻsilent serviceʻ operated during this historical time period and the sacrifices they made. A visit to the museum shows how far we have come in the use of submarines, from the first to the largest. Our next stop requires a trip over to Ford Island, home to many historical sites. This is still an active naval base, so we must take only approved transportation. We pass by memorials to other ships, like the USS Oklahoma, which still lays on the floor of the harbor, like the USS Arizona. The USS Battleship Missouri stands tall above all in the harbor. This beautifully resorted ship marks the end of the war. See the spot upon itʻs deck that the documents by Japan were signed that officially ended the war. Explore the deck with a local guide on a 35-minute tour of some of the most interesting stories and reasons for Mighty Moʻs many battle scars. A day is never complete without a tour of the sky, the Pacific Aviation Museum provides hangers of restored airplanes, historic pieces and so much more. Explore the exhibits, get into one, do a flight simulator, and so much more. We end the day with a wonderful tour of historic Honolulu, where we drive by or through important sites like Punchbowl Cemetery, Iolani Palace, King Kamehameha Statue, and other places that will awe you. We return you back to your accommodation around 5:30 pm after a 10-hour day of exploration, heroism, and history.

2. Research & Study About Pearl Harbor in Advance

As Pearl Harbor is a place packed with history, it is advisable for you to read about it in advance before the visit. There are a lot of interesting facts & information that you may perhaps be unaware of. But by reading about them, you can see the sites with much more awareness. You can skim through some books or online articles in order to know the background of the place.

3. Pack Lightly

As the harbor is still a military base, some parts of it do not allow visitors to carry bags. While there are storage lockers available, it’s best to pack lightly. Your camera and wallet are all you really need for the park, so save yourself a little trouble and leave the non-essentials in your hotel room.

4. Dress Appropriately

It is important to keep in mind that the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor is an underwater grave. Thus, you should remember to dress appropriately. No bathing suits are allowed.

5. Wear Comfortable Footwear

You will need to do a lot of walking in order to visit the sites, monuments, museums and battleships in Pearl Harbor. Thus, it is essential that you must wear comfortable footwear.

6. No Bags or Purses Allowed

As Pearl Harbor is a military base and is home to the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet, the security arrangements are very strict. You will also have to pass through a metal detector that is why any kind of bag, backpack, or a purse is not allowed. However, bag storage is provided there for $3 per bag maximum of 50 pounds, regardless of size. You are allowed to bring Wallet, Camera, Phone and Clear water bottle only.

7. Wear Sunscreen

A considerable part of your tour will be spent outdoors. As Hawaii is warm and the tropical sun can be harsh, don’t forget to use sunscreen before going out.

Make sure to remember these tips in mind before your visit to Pearl Harbor. Enjoy the tour by exploring all the memorials and pay respect to the valiant soldiers.
