9 tips for taking a luxury vacation on a budget

I'm often amazed when I learn how much friends and family spend on travel.
That's because travel -- yes, even luxury travel -- doesn't have to be excessively expensive. And it's possible to book a luxury vacation even when you're traveling on a tight budget.
Of course, it's essential to understand that traveling on a budget will look different for every person. Plus, every traveler has a different vision of what a luxury vacation entails. So, although I'll give some examples of luxury travel in this guide, these examples may not align with what you consider luxury based on your budget. But, these tips should be relevant regardless of your budget and desired level of luxury. So, let's get started.

Make and stick to a budget
When making a budget, consider significant expenses such as airfare and lodging as well as minor costs like dining, activities and souvenirs. In addition, you'll want to allocate an emergency fund you can turn to if you face unforeseen yet unavoidable costs during your trip.
Of course, two travelers with identical trip costs may budget their funds differently. After all, a crucial part of taking a luxury trip on a budget is assessing your priorities and budgeting your funds accordingly.

Set your priorities
If you want to take a luxury vacation on a budget, you can maximize your enjoyment by splurging on the aspects of your trip that matter most to you.
For example, I typically prioritize hotels in loyalty programs I care about . And I try to stay at hotels that offer in-room workspace for two guests (which is surprisingly rare). I'm also starting to prioritize location more when selecting hotels.
In addition to considering what to prioritize, you also must decide what's unimportant. For example, I rarely splurge on fine dining or chic bars. Instead, I usually eat at cafes and buy regionally produced beer or wine from a nearby grocery store.

Visit an inexpensive destination during the off-season
One of the easiest ways to unlock a luxury vacation at budget prices is to visit an affordable destination during its off-season. For example, you can stay at the Conrad Cairo in Egypt for as little as 19,000 points or $88 per night (including taxes and fees).
And you can stay at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal in the United Arab Emirates for as little as $152 per night. Granted, you'll need to endure the summer heat and book a pre-paid rate for the lowest price. But, you won't need to pay much more for a flexible rate or a night during the shoulder season.
You can also unlock luxury stays in inexpensive destinations when using hotel points. For example, I've had my eye on a stay at the World of Hyatt Category 1 Park Hyatt Chennai. This hotel in India is the only Category 1 Park Hyatt, and you can book a standard room for just 5,000 points per night. So, even though some of the reviews say this hotel is outdated, it's still an excellent opportunity to stay at a Park Hyatt on a budget.
Finally, being in a location where your money goes further may let you splurge on experiences even when traveling on a budget. For example, I loved getting a quality 60-minute massage in Da Nang, Vietnam, for just 220,000 Vietnamese dong (about $10).

Stay outside the most popular neighborhoods
Travelers on a budget can often save money by staying at a luxury hotel in a less popular neighborhood.
If you're visiting Istanbul, for example, you can frequently snag a good deal at luxury hotels located outside the most popular business and tourist areas.
And if you're willing to stay on the Asia side of Istanbul or even in the Old City, you can often save money without sacrificing luxury. However, you may also find good deals in centrally located areas, so it's worth looking at the map view when searching for a hotel. For example, the W Istanbul may provide a compelling level of luxury at a modest price on some dates.
And travelers who prefer Hilton may want to stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Istanbul Sirkeci in the Old City or the Hilton Istanbul Kozyatagi. But, if you're looking for an even lower price, you might consider the DoubleTree by Hilton Istanbul Esentepe, which is near a metro station and has a Turkish bath on site.
Travelers with Hilton Diamond status or Marriott Platinum Elite or higher status may prefer to stay at a luxury hotel with an executive lounge, such as the Hilton Istanbul Kozyatagi. Luckily, even if you don't stay enough to earn hotel elite status organically, adding select hotel credit cards to your wallet can help.

Leverage credit card perks
There are also many other credit cards you can leverage to take a luxury vacation on a budget. Look for cards with perks such as:
- Airport lounge access :
Select American Express cards, including The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, provide access to Amex's Centurion Lounges and various other airport lounges through Amex's Global Lounge Collection .
Many travel rewards cards provide a Priority Pass Select membership . Here are some of the best cards for Priority Pass lounge access .
The American Express® Green Card provides up to $100 in LoungeBuddy statement credits each calendar year (enrollment required).
- Luxury hotel booking programs :
Select American Express cardholders can get elite-like perks and sometimes a third, fourth, fifth or sixth night free when booking through Amex's Fine Hotels & Resorts program .
Select Chase cardholders can get elite-like perks when booking through Chase's Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection .
- Hotel discounts and free nights
Cardholders of the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card and IHG® Rewards Traveler Credit Card can get a fourth-night reward when redeeming IHG Rewards points for a stay of three nights or longer.
Cardholders of the Citi Prestige® Card get a complimentary fourth night when booking a hotel stay of four nights or more through the Citi ThankYou travel portal up to two times per calendar year. So you might get a lot of value using your fourth night free at luxury hotels .
Many hotel credit cards offer an annual free night that may justify the card's annual fee. For example, I'm happy to pay the annual fee on the IHG Premier Card and I'm keeping my Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card for the long term due to the annual free nights I get on these cards.
- Elite status shortcuts :
If you want elite status with a particular program, it's worth considering one of the best credit cards to jumpstart elite status . Some credit cards can help you earn airline elite status , and you can get top-tier Hilton Diamond status just for having the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card.
Having personal and business Marriott Bonvoy credit cards , such as the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card and Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card, gives you 30 elite nights each year .
The information for the Citi Prestige Card and Hilton Aspire Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Mix luxury and budget on the same trip
Especially if you can book through the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts program or the Chase Luxury Hotels and Resorts Collection , you may want to mix luxury and budget travel on the same trip . If you can snag early check-in or late checkout, you could experience more than 24 hours at a luxury hotel on a one-night stay.
Plus, when you book through these programs, you'll typically get extra perks like breakfast for two and statement credits for use during your stay. For example, I once got $160 of food and beverages included on a $153 Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts stay at the luxury Loews Chicago Hotel where I received a $100 food and beverage credit plus breakfast for two.
One night may sound like too short of a stay. But, I've had some very memorable one- or two-night stays at luxury properties when traveling on a budget. For example, I loved my short stays at the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay , InterContinental Bora Bora Thalasso , The Ritz-Carlton Osaka and The St. Regis Osaka. And I'm considering a one-night stay at Marriott's Al Maha , a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, the next time I'm in Dubai.

Jump on deals and sales
Deals and sales have let me take many luxury vacations on a budget. Back on Dec. 31, 2018, my husband and I booked Cathay Pacific first-class round-trip tickets from Da Nang, Vietnam , for about $850 each. That's a lot of money, but compared to the typical cash fare for this ticket, this was a fantastic deal.
But, airlines don't always honor mistake fares . Luckily, it's often possible to find great airfares that aren't mistakes . Airlines frequently offer sales you can find just by subscribing to TPG's deals feed (@ tpg_alerts ) or by signing up for one of the many flight deal mailing lists. Or, if you want to take a vacation on set dates, use the Google Flights explore feature to find an inexpensive destination.
Of course, there are also award sales such as Flying Blue monthly promo rewards and American Airlines reduced mileage awards . And, in some cases, buy points and miles promotions can provide excellent value.
For example, reward nights at the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort Thalasso Spa typically cost 100,000 points. And you can typically buy IHG points for 0.5 cents per point several times a year. So, if I bought points at 0.5 cents per point and found availability, I'd effectively pay $500 for a night -- which is much less than the $1,004 paid rate I found on one date with award availability.

Redeem points and miles
Even if you aren't booking during an award sale or a buy points and miles promotion , you can still unlock luxury hotels and flights by redeeming points and miles.
Besides booking deals and redeeming hotel free-night certificates , redeeming points and miles are the primary way I book luxury vacations on a budget .
If you need more points or miles, several of the top travel rewards cards currently offer massive 100,000-point sign-up bonuses, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening). TPG credit cards writer Stella Shon, for example, recently redeemed 100,000 Chase points to book a Costa Rica trip of a lifetime.
Related: Why I usually redeem points for mid-tier hotels (and when I opt for luxury instead)
Look beyond the major programs
I ignored hotel loyalty programs for many years and instead booked independent properties through online travel agency (OTA) rewards programs . After all, you can often snag luxury hotels and guest houses through an OTA for less than comparable hotels that belong to major hotel loyalty programs.
Similarly, you may want to consider using a platform like Airbnb or VRBO to secure a luxury vacation rental . Airbnb even offers luxury rentals and experiences through Airbnb Luxe . You can also rent vehicles (including luxury types) from individuals through a service such as Turo . Just don't assume your credit card car rental insurance will cover you on peer-to-peer Turo rentals .

Luxury travel does not have to break the bank. We asked our A-List travel advisors for their favorite ways to save money without compromising on experience or style. They offered a range of creative tips, including when to book a trip and what things are worth the splurge.
Flip the itinerary.
"Consider reversing the order of destinations — that can change the availability and pricing for flights and hotels. Look into different flying options and lock in the best one possible. Stay at hotels and resorts midweek, as rates are often lower than weekends." — Marco Palermo, Authentic Explorations
Reserve an extra night.
"Book a second night on arrival so you can travel worry-free if your flight is delayed. Look for stay-for-four/pay-for-three-night deals." — Alison Nolting, The Africa Adventure Company
Maximize currency.
"Watch exchange rates. Right now, there's so much value on luxury itineraries to Australia and New Zealand. Preplanning and reviewing payment options can really help dramatically lower a trip cost." — Cassandra Bookholder, Camelback Odyssey Travel
Focus on wildlife.
"Don't obsess over room categories in wilderness areas. Your focus should be on exclusivity of access, not the length of the wine list. Leave splurges on rooming and dining for cities and beaches." — Chris Liebenberg, Piper & Heath Travel
Pay for a middle seat.
"If you can't afford business class on an international flight, make your own. For two travelers, take the three-seat section and pay for the middle seat. Give yourself room and bring your own special treats." — Jim Strong, Strong Travel Services
Go during "green season."
"We highly recommend people travel during what’s known as the 'green season.' It’s when safari camps aren’t full, and it’s possible to have an entire camp to yourself. Southern Africa is green and lush, there will be far fewer vehicles, and babies are being born left, right, and center. We call it our 'secret season.'" — Elizabeth Gordon Halliday, Extraordinary Journeys
Book way in advance.
"Don't try to economize on a trip-by-trip basis. Instead, talk to your travel advisor about the destinations you'd like to see over the next few years, and create a multiyear plan (much like a financial advisor would). That way, the travel advisor can help maximize your budget by planning in advance and making the most of shoulder/low-season pricing and seasonal weather patterns, and book in advance to avoid last-minute price increases." — Rob Clabbers, Q Cruise + Travel
Be flexible.
"Flexibility and compromise are key when planning a value-driven safari. The more flexible you are with travel dates, the better value you can find. And being willing to compromise opens up more options. If you're on a honeymoon, narrow your search to camps, lodges, or resorts that offer honeymoon deals. And if you're traveling with a multigenerational family or a group of friends, consider taking over camps, lodges, or private safari houses to spread out the cost." — Jay Parmar, Wander Africa
Share a cabin.
"Traveling to Antarctica in shoulder season offers great savings and, if you go on one of the first cruises in November, the chance to see pristine scenery. Alternatively, visit at the end of the season in March — it’s cheaper and offers a greater chance of spotting whales — a win-win. If you're solo, book a shared twin cabin to avoid the solo supplement and meet a like-minded traveler." — Lily Bunker, Jacada Travel

Best Tips For Luxury Travel on a Budget
So, what exactly is luxury travel?
It’s generally classified into three levels:
- Premium : high-end products and services accessible to a broader audience, e.g. mid-range luxury hotels and private guided tours.
- Ultra-luxury : rare products and services that are exclusively accessible to a select few, e.g. private yachts and private jets.
- Beyond luxury : the ultimate in luxury and exclusivity, e.g. private islands and unique experiences such as space tourism.
In this post, I’m talking about luxury travel on a budget – getting great deals for premium travel experiences. Very few people can afford the other options!
Here’s what I do to achieve amazing and affordable luxury vacations:
1. Travel during the off-season
Peak season is the most expensive time to travel. If you’re looking for luxury vacation packages or reasonably priced, premium amenities, travelling during the off-season can be a fantastic way to save money without sacrificing comfort and style.
Airfares are usually cheaper during the off-season, while hotels and other travel providers often offer lower rates outside of the peak season to attract more customers. This means you could stay in luxury hotels or enjoy all-inclusive luxury vacation packages at a fraction of the cost.
Great destinations in the off-season for real luxury on a budget include Costa Rica, Thailand, or Mexico. These countries offer beautiful beaches, stunning landscapes, and luxurious accommodations at a fraction of the cost of other destinations.
I love Costa Rica during the “rainy season” because the hotels are amazing, the weather is lovely, and off-peak times are perfect for seeing unique events, like the rare Olive Ridley Turtles laying or hatching their eggs en masse.
2. Consider a Repositioning Cruise
When cruise liners are moved to a new location to take advantage of better seasonal weather in different parts of the world, this is called “repositioning.”
You can take a repositioning cruise at greatly reduced fares. While they are one-way trips, you can stay longer ashore at the destination country and come home a separate way 🙂
3. Look for deals and promotions
Many travel providers offer discounted packages and tours to attract more customers during the off-season.
Pro Tip: Rather than take the discount, use this as an opportunity to get an upgraded room or package.
4. Use online travel agencies
One of the best ways to find great deals on flights , hotels, and vacation packages (including all-inclusive vacation packages that include flights, accommodations, and other travel expenses) is to use online travel sites such as Booking , Orbitz, and Travelocity.
Booking packages can be cheaper than booking each aspect of your trip separately, and many of these packages offer luxury travel, so it’s a great way to enjoy luxury travel without breaking the bank.
Pro Tip: Consider purchasing travel packages online on Black Friday for the following year. I’ve personally saved as much as 60% on all-inclusive vacation packages by buying on Black Friday. And here I thought it was only for TVs and appliances!
5. Use Travel Apps
Speaking of online, don’t forget to add useful travel apps to your cellphone. Apps will provide general travel information and alerts for great last-minute deals on hotels, airfare, and emerging threats at your destination.
There’s even an app to help you find the closest bathroom 🙂
6. Check hotel websites
Many hotels offer exclusive promotions and deals when you book directly through their website. It’s always a good idea to check the hotel’s website before booking through a third-party site to see if you can get a better deal.
If you know where you wish to stay, or have been there several times, call the hotel or resort directly. Don’t be afraid to ask for a deal, a discount, or an upgrade.
7. Travel deal websites
Many specialise in finding and promoting travel deals, such as Groupon, LivingSocial, and Travelzoo . These sites often offer exclusive discounts and promotions that can help you save money on your travels.
8. Credit card rewards programs
Some credit cards offer rewards programs that allow you to earn points or miles that can be redeemed for travel.
These rewards can help you save money on flights, hotels, and other travel expenses, such as travel insurance and purchase protections.
Most credit cards that offer travel rewards charge high interest rates on overdue balances. While these cards are a terrific way to accumulate rewards quickly, they are only budget-friendly if you pay off your outstanding balance every month.
9. Loyalty programmes
Hotel loyalty programmes offer varied benefits and rewards that can help stretch your budget. The best one for you depends on your travel preferences and habits.
Popular programmes can help stretch your budget with rewards such as free room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, and points that can be redeemed for free nights or other travel experiences.
Airline loyalty programmes typically offer benefits such as free checked bags, priority boarding, and access to airport lounges.
It’s important to compare the benefits and rewards of different loyalty programs to determine which is the best fit for your travel needs.
10. Consider emerging destinations
As emerging destinations are not yet fully established on the tourist trail, they often offer lower prices for accommodations, food, and activities than more popular destinations.
These up-and-coming destinations often offer unique and authentic cultural experiences that cannot be found in more touristy areas. When you visit one of these locations, you can have an exclusive and memorable vacation that is both luxurious and affordable.
Destinations worth considering include:
With its beautiful beaches, stunning natural landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, Vietnam is quickly becoming a popular destination for luxury travellers seeking unique experiences. Vietnam is still relatively affordable, making it an ideal destination for those seeking luxury travel on a budget .
📌 With over 3,100 5-star reviews, this 2 day cruise around Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay is the perfect introduction to Vietnam, with all meals, activities and round-trip transfers from Hanoi included. Find out more here .
This small Balkan country has picturesque coastal towns, stunning beaches, and rugged mountains, but it is often overlooked in favour of its more popular neighbours. Montenegro offers a unique and authentic travel experience that won’t break the bank.
This tropical island nation off the southern coast of India is known for its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. While it has become more popular recently, Sri Lanka still offers affordable luxury accommodations, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a unique and affordable luxury vacation.
11. Choose your accommodations wisely
Never assume that a 5-star hotel will be superior to a 4-star one! A freshly renovated 4-star boutique hotel may offer more luxury amenities and a more intimate and personalised experience than a large 5-star chain hotel.
Before you decide, compare the offerings of both types of accommodations.
Luxury is assessed differently in different parts of the world. For example, a 5-star resort in Cuba may not offer the same level of luxury as a 4-star bed and breakfast in Portugal.
Look beyond the star rating and consider other factors, such as location, amenities, and reviews from other travellers. Taking a more comprehensive approach to your research can help you find hidden gems with the perfect blend of luxury and affordability.
12. Check offers from newly opened hotels
Finding offers on newly opened or re-opened hotels can be a great way to save money and experience a property before it becomes well-known and more expensive.
Here are some suggestions to help you stay in one of these new hotels:
Sign up for hotel newsletters and loyalty programs : Be among the first to hear about new and re-opened hotels and any associated offers.
Check travel deal websites for special deals on newly opened or re-opened hotels : Look for discounted room rates, free upgrades, or complimentary meals. Never underestimate Google!
Follow hotels on social media : Stay up to date on any offers or promotions they may be offering.
Use travel agents : Travel agents often have access to exclusive deals and offers, including those for new or re-opened hotels. They can help you find the best deals and tailor your trip to your preferences and budget.
Check hotel review websites : Search TripAdvisor for reviews and ratings for newly opened or re-opened hotels.
Word of mouth: I consider a tip from a friend to be the gold standard for finding a deal, a sale, or a discount. My family motto is, “If it’s free, it’s for me”!
When a friend told me about her great vacation in the Dominican Republic, I got a great deal at the newly opened Majestic Mirage in Punta Cana. How? We Googled it, called the resort and asked if there were any deals. Yup! They were so new that they were totally underbooked for the high season and still in the “soft opening” stage. We booked at a 35% discount and had our room upgraded to a suite. And just FYI, the food, service, and pools were amazing!
13. Eat like a local
Eating locally is a great way to experience luxury travel on a budget while supporting the local economy.
Discovering unique and regional dishes can expand your culinary horizons and enhance your travel experience: this taste of local culture will be impossible at international chain restaurants.
So, next time you travel, don’t miss out on the affordable luxury of eating locally.
Pro Tip: Combine a meal with a tour. Think “dinner and a show” or take a food and wine tour while you’re on vacation.
14. Prioritise your activities
Focus on the activities that are most important to you with a customised travel experience that fits within your budget. Even in group tours , excursions can sometimes be purchased a la carte. You do not have to be part of or pay for every activity offered during the tour.
15. Cut out expenses that don’t add value to your travel experience
Not interested in shopping? Skip the high-end boutiques and focus on other, more important activities. This might be the ideal time for a self-guided walking tour .
16. book tickets or reservations in advance
Take advantage of early bird discounts and avoid last-minute price hikes. Broadway theatre tickets can be the impetus for a week in New York. How about Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bad Cinderella? Or Hamilton?
In my experience, Broadway shows are so popular they don’t use early bird options, but that doesn’t mean savvy travellers can’t save money.
There are plenty of official Broadway Theatre ticket stands, and you can often get same-day tickets cheaper, if you’re prepared to stand in line for them.
Fun Fact: These are called “rush tickets” thanks to the Broadway play “Rent”.
Pro Tip: The best trick, I think, is to buy online using discount codes. The prices are often as good or better than same-day rush.
17. Look for early bird special offers
Savvy travellers look for early bird specials; some plan their whole trip around a special deal, like a sporting event or tickets for a show.
Buying while the show is still in rehearsal can save you money. Big cities with active theatre districts like Chicago, Toronto, and London offer discount tickets for “early birds”. The same applies to large sporting events like baseball, hockey, racing, football, and soccer.
18. Avoid tourist traps
Tourist traps take advantage of the high demand for goods and services in popular tourist areas. Prices can be higher than usual in these places!
- Hotel prices in popular tourist destinations can be up to 200% more expensive than in less popular locations.
- Restaurants in tourist areas often charge more for food and drinks because they know that tourists may not be familiar with local prices or may be willing to pay more for the convenience of being in a central location.
- Souvenirs and other items sold in tourist areas often take advantage of the high volume of tourists passing through.
Pro Tip : Do research and compare prices before making purchases. Focus on lesser-known destinations and activities; you can find unique and memorable experiences that don’t cost a fortune.
19. Customise Your Itinerary
Customising your itinerary can help you create a more enjoyable and meaningful travel experience. When you focus on the activities that you are most interested in, you’re not paying for things you’re not interested in!
Seek hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path destinations that offer an authentic and affordable travel experience.
20. Consider a retreat!
Retreats are boutique-style vacations with well-curated activities. They are crafted to serve the specific wants and desires of specific groups of people.
Retreats often focus on yoga, wellness, adventure, silence, spirituality, creativity, and culinary. Many of these can be completely immersive experiences , including everything except your airfare. There are often savings if you bring a friend or want to share a room.
What is A luxury budget?
This is the amount of money you’re willing and able to spend on luxury goods or experiences while still being mindful of your overall budget. It’s about finding ways to indulge in luxurious experiences without overspending or going into debt.
A luxury budget can vary depending on individual financial situations and priorities. For some, it may mean spending a few hundred dollars on a fancy dinner or spa treatment, while for others, it may mean spending several thousand dollars on a luxury vacation.
The key to maintaining a luxury budget is to prioritise and plan ahead. Identify what experiences or items are most important to you and allocate your budget carefully. You can stretch your luxury budget further when researching deals and discounts, travelling during off-peak seasons, and being flexible with travel dates.

What is Luxury Travel?
Whichever way it is applied, luxury is the best of whatever it represents. Although luxury travel is associated with high-end accommodation and experiences and premium air and train travel, this is not the total sum of its parts. It is sometimes defined around the “ Five Cs ”: Culture, Cuisine, Community, Content and Customization.
Luxury Travel on a Budget: General Tips
1. do your research.
Research, research and yet more research; this is an essential step towards finding luxury travel on the cheap. From choosing your destination and planning an itinerary, to booking your flight and accommodation, you need to put in the legwork to get the best bang for your buck.
You can use a travel agent and sometimes that can work to your advantage. But, equally, you can save money by cutting out the middleman and doing this yourself.
And it’s sort of fun.
For inspiration and information, browse guidebooks and travel articles . I often look at itineraries offered by small group tour companies to give me an idea of what might be feasible.
2. Book ahead
Planning ahead can bring many advantages. If you are in a position to book early, the travel industry will reward you with discounts or other incentives.
This can be the case when booking a cruise plus you will get be able to pick the right cruise cabin for you. That said, there is also a chance of discounts closer to the departure date.
The price of flights tends to increase as you approach the date of departure.
By booking accommodation early, you get the pick of the exact place you want to stay, rather than settling for your second or third choice.
3. Or bag a last-minute travel deal
Conversely, another way to find luxury travel on a budget is to bag a great last-minute deal. This is a riskier strategy but is an option if you are not bothered about where you go and have some flexibility around dates.
4. Consider using a travel agency
It is only in recent years that I have cottoned on to the advantages of booking luxury travel through a specialist agent. They can often offer special perks such as free breakfast, room upgrades, hotel credit and late checkout.
5. Sign up for a cashback site
I have friends who have clawed back hundreds of pounds by booking elements of their luxury holiday via a cashback website. The two most common sites are TopCashback and Quidco .
This is how it works. Once you have signed up for the site, simply use this as a portal to connect to the retail site of your choice. After the sale has been completed, a sum of money is yours.
6. Choose your credit card wisely
Savvy luxury travellers have at least one travel rewards credit card in their wallets. Airline credit cards allow you to earn frequent flier points as you spend, and you can also bag bonuses simply by signing up.
I have accumulated tens of thousands of Avios using my British Airways AMEX card at no extra cost. These points have paid for BA flights and upgrades on more than one occasion.
I now use this AMEX card for everyday spending to max out rewards.
Just make sure you repay what you have spent in full each month (the interest cost will dwarf any gain you get). Some of these cards are free; others incur an annual fee.
For the lowdown, take a look at this helpful review .
Choosing Your Destination
Your choice of destination is key to luxury travel without breaking the bank.
7. Travel where your money is worth more
I’m talking about the global economy here. If a country’s currency is plummeting, your money will be worth more.
Therefore, keep track of which currencies are performing well , and which are on the slide, before you travel.
For example; in the wake of the Brexit vote and a few political misadventures (ahem!), the UK pound took a hammering. To cut costs, British travellers could look towards South Africa, Turkey and Japan , which are among the countries where your pound goes furthest .
8. Travel where your money goes further
But it’s not just the currency exchange rate that determines how cheap your holiday will be. Consider also the cost of living in your destination.
For example, the lower cost of living in Africa , Malaysia , Thailand and Poland will allow you to find affordable luxury travel, from deal-breaking five-star hotels to fine dining for a steal.
If you are thinking of travelling to Europe, your money will go further the further east you travel. Think Pristina instead of Paris, Ljubljana instead of London .
Be a smart traveller and try to choose a country where you can live a luxurious life for less.
9. Avoid more touristy destinations
To stretch your travel budget, chuck the Cayman Islands for Cuba. If it’s lakes and mountains that you’re after, visit Slovenia’s Lake Bled instead of Switzerland’s Lake Geneva.
The more popular travel places are also the most expensive, so look instead for emerging or off-the-beaten-track destinations . In addition to lower hotel prices, the cost of living will also be lower, and they are less likely to be rammed with other travellers.
You can sometimes have a more authentic experience in a less touristy destination and the locals will be less jaded and more welcoming.
10. Travel out of season
Flexibility is one of the keys to successful luxury travel on a budget.
If possible, travel out of peak season. Not only will you save money, but you can also avoid the peak season crowds. If you have visited the Italian Lakes in the summer you will understand what I am saying!
The flip side of out-of-season travel is unpredictable weather and the closure of some restaurants and attractions.
Getting There & Getting Around
11. find the cheapest flights.
Price is not the sole consideration when flying in a premium cabin.
Not all business-class flights are equal and you need to carefully consider if the on-board service, seat and catering, for example, are worth the premium. That said, price is an important consideration.
Skyscanner is my go-to platform to search for flights. I like to filter results by cabin class and compare the price of flights across an entire month. Skyscanner also supports multi-city options in searching for open-jaw flights .
I also use Google Flights to explore flight routings, schedules and fares.
12. Take advantage of flight sales
Over the years, I have saved a packet on business class flights at sales times .
Many airlines hold these at the end of the summer holidays, around Black Friday and in January. It’s worth signing up for a few email lists to keep in the loop.
13. Join a frequent flyer program
Most airlines have loyalty programs that allow you to earn points that you can redeem for flights and upgrades. Every flier should sign up for at least one frequent flyer scheme.
Earning and using frequent flyer points is a bit of an art. To get up to speed, check out Turning Left for Less , The Points Guy or Head for Points .
It’s not that often you get something for nothing, so enrolling in a loyalty program is a no-brainer!
But don’t be a slave to these airline loyalty schemes.
I started to fall into the trap of a frequent flier program steering my travel plans. It’s very easy to choose a destination based on the accumulation of frequent flier points, and tier points, that determine your status in a loyalty program.
14. Buy a train pass
Of course, flying is not the only way to get from A to B.
I am a massive fan of train travel .
Not only is it a more eco-friendly way of transport, but it is also less stressful than boarding a plane and you are usually deposited slap-bang in the centre of town. And that’s without factoring in super scenic journeys such as the Glacier Express and Flam Railway .
The downside of train travel is that point-to-point tickets can be expensive, especially if you buy them at the last minute. This is where rail passes can save you a ton of money , notably using interrail or Eurail . You just need to do your homework.
Luxury Accommodation for Less
I do like a nice bed for the night. Whilst it’s not a deal-breaker, really good or really bad accommodation can impact your travel experience.
Here are some useful tips to find better accommodation for less .
15. Mix and match your accommodation styles
Alternating luxury hotels with budget ones is a great way to save money (and to make swanky hotels affordable). Even if a budget hotel turns out to be a bit grim, I’ll put up with it if I know that I have a great hotel to look forward to at my next stop.
16. Consider booking directly with the hotel
When I want to stay at a particular hotel, I always start by checking online for the cheapest room rate.
There is more than one way of doing this, but in recent years I have tended to enter the hotel and dates into Google Hotels , which will generate prices from its partner sites. This gives me a feel for where hotels are clustered and the price bracket I am looking at.
I use Booking.com for 80% of my hotel bookings. Many of their competitive room rates allow free cancellation , which I prefer for flexibility, and their Genius scheme offers attractive discounts on selected properties.
However, I will always check if booking directly with the hotel is advantageous. They may have a better room rate or offer free upgrades or competitive packages.
Always ensure that the rates they quote include taxes and other charges.
17. Join a hotel loyalty scheme
Most chain hotels have loyalty schemes . Members of these schemes are often entitled to discounts or other perks, and you will also earn loyalty points that can be redeemed against future visits.
18. Think about staying in a new hotel
Whilst a new hotel is a bit of a punt and can suffer from teething problems, you may be able to snap up a great deal through their introductory ‘soft’ opening rates.
19. Stay in a boutique hotel
I am a big fan of boutique hotels.
Although they have fewer amenities, I like the intimacy and service that often comes with their size. They often have more character, feel less corporate than a 5-star chain hotel, and can cost considerably less.
Ditto guesthouses and bed and breakfasts.
20. Rent an apartment
Apartments are usually more affordable than hotels and can be a good choice if you are in a destination for more than a few days. For example; I’ve had great experiences staying in apartments, from Tenerife to Normandy
Airbnb is a well-known platform for booking apartments but traditional hotel booking sites, including Booking.com , also offer an increasing selection of rental properties.
21. Stay out of the centre of town
If you are not sleeping in the centre of town, you will usually get a room for considerably less.
Whilst this clearly has disadvantages, particularly in terms of safety for solo travellers , don’t rule it out. Just check that transport options are cheap and convenient.
Also, I have found that staying in more residential areas has helped me get a better feel for a place.
22. Go all-inclusive
I’ll level with you. I am a little uncomfortable with all-inclusive hotels.
There is a danger that you won’t absorb much of the local culture, and the local economy won’t benefit from the tourist dollar. However, they can offer good value and you can travel safely in the knowledge that most of your bills have been paid up-front.
Tips for Eating Out
23. Make lunch your main meal of the day
The next tip for finding affordable luxury travel is for the foodies out there.
If you have your heart set on a top-rank restaurant and your budget won’t stretch to dinner, consider dining there at lunchtime. Many restaurants offer a fixed-price lunch menu, which is many times cheaper than their dinner menu. Although the choice may be more limited, the quality should be the same.
Also, consider eating at the bar . Some restaurants have less expensive bar menus without sacrificing food quality.
24. Avoid tourist-oriented restaurants
Location matters also.
Unless they have been recommended by a local, I avoid restaurants in a city’s main square. Food tends to be overpriced and average at best.
A better experience is usually a few blocks away from the main tourist hub. Better still, head out to less-central neighbourhoods where locals dine and restaurants pay lower rents.
My Top Affordable Luxury Travel Tip …
25. splurge in the right places.
Finally, luxury travel on a budget is within your grasp if you know when to splash the cash.
Whilst I will always try to fly business-class long-haul, I cannot see the value in the cost of a business-class ticket for a two-hour flight. Use the price difference to upgrade your hotel room or experience when you arrive at your destination.
If a central part of your trip is relaxing on a beautiful island, a beach-facing room may be a wise investment.
But what if you are going to be dashing from one must-see sight to another on a city break and your hotel room is a place merely to lay your weary head at night? In that case, a premium hotel room is not usually such a wise investment.
In my view, splurging on once-in-a-lifetime experiences is always a good investment.
Whilst I baulked at paying over 90 USD to travel on the Gornergrat railway in Zermatt , seeing the mighty Matterhorn reflected in Riffelsee was an unforgettable experience.
More than one cause for reflection.

Luxury Travel on a Budget: 32 Tips You Need to Know
May 30, 2017 by Janice Waugh
Who doesn't like a bit of luxury on their travels now and then?
Luxury can be about the destination but, more typically, it's about how you experience the destination, whether it be a city or town, in the mountains or by the ocean.
While luxury can cost a lot of money, there are some tricks to getting luxury travel on a budget.
We did some research on affordable luxury. We went to members of the Solo Travel Society on Facebook for their top tips. I also put a call out to the public relations community and received recommendations from them as well. I've pared down the deluge that came in to the 32 Tips I think you need to know.
Here they are.
Table of Contents
Plan Your Itinerary for Luxury Travel on a Budget
It's worthwhile spending some time thinking about your entire year of travel. When you think of all the trips you want to take and the days in which you can take them, you can plan better, save money, and therefore get more luxury for your travel budget.
- Determine a reasonable daily budget including accommodation, food, etc.
- Multiply that figure by the number of days you'll travel.
- Add the cost of your flight.
- Divide the total by the number of days you'll be traveling.
The longer you travel the less your flight contributes to your daily cost. Say your budget for accommodation, food, etc., is $175 per day and your flight is $900. On a per day basis, a 4-day getaway (to Paris from New York, for example) would be $400/day or $1,600. On a per day basis, a 2-week trip would be $239/day or $3,350. In this scenario, a 4-day trip costs almost half the price of a 14-day trip.
- Choose a cheap 5-star destination . When looking for a 5-star retreat think about the country first. You want a country where your currency buys a lot. Then find the luxury experience within it. From North America consider Central America. From the UK think Greece and Portugal. From Australia you have much of Southeast Asia within a reasonable long-haul flight.
- Go less central and less touristy . If you stay out of the center of things and off the beaten track, you are more likely to get more for less. Research from Trivago suggests that staying within 1 km of Seattle city center could cost you $100/night more than outside that 1 km circumference. Plus, staying outside the city center can get you into interesting neighborhoods so that you get a real feel for the city.
- Think Eastern Europe rather than Western Europe . If Europe is your destination, the east is definitely cheaper than the west. Think about Budapest, Hungary; Prague, Czech Republic; or Krakow, Poland. Consider countries like Slovenia, Croatia, or Romania.
- Travel the perimeter of Western Europe rather than the center . Cities that are farther out from the center tend to be less expensive. Think Porto, Portugal; Valetta, Malta; or Athens, Greece. The same does not apply to northern Europe which is quite expensive.
- Choose the destination that has cheaper flights . Charles Thompson of the Solo Travel Society gave us this hot tip for Melbournians: Melbourne has one of the largest populations of Greeks outside Athens so flights to Athens are a tad cheaper. You can apply this idea in many places. Look for large immigrant populations near your home airport and you'll likely discover where flights are less expensive for the distance. A quick check on flights to Delhi from Toronto shows that the cost is only a few hundred more than flights to Europe. But think how much less expensive luxury is in India than Europe.
- Use Skyscanner's “Everywhere” button . To give you an idea of relatively cheap flight destinations, plug in your home airport and “everywhere” as your destination into Skyscanner's search engine. You'll get all sorts of destinations presented to you in order of least to most expensive. But always check FlightNetwork and the recommended airline's site for the best deal before purchasing.
- Check out the Solo Traveler Deals Page . On this page we list companies that offer tours and cruises with no or very low single supplements for solo travelers. You can also sign up for the Solo Traveler Advisory to receive new deals via email every month.
When to Find Luxury Travel on a Budget
- Watch for the deals in your inbox. Sign up to receive newsletters and deals from your favorite, luxury travel companies and you'll be among the first to learn about special sales.
- Judi & Janet from the Solo Travel Society (and many more) say: Travel in the off season . Avoid the crowds. The locals are also more relaxed and friendly. Just watch out for gotchas like rainy season at the beach. Read: How to Save on Shoulder Season Travel: Top Tips .
- Margaret from the Solo Travel Society says: Visit places like museums late in the day . “I love museums and galleries. I try to go later in the day as they often sell discounted tickets near closing.”
- Anna and Wendy of the Solo Travel Society say: Book last-minute deals. Book early or at the last minute. At the last minute you can find empty spaces on tours so that discounts are often found there.
Luxury Accommodation on a Budget
- Plan for a variety of accommodation styles . On a trip of more than a week I always plan for some budget accommodation, some mid-range, and some luxury. Truly, there are advantages to budget accommodation and by saving on a few nights in a cheaper hotel I can come in on budget even when I include a few nights at a more expensive one.
- Stay at a boutique hotel . Smaller hotels with fewer amenities than the chain hotels with restaurants, bars, and pools may well offer more luxury for less money. There is no international standard for the hotel star system so you can't really count on it to tell you how luxurious a hotel is. A hotel with a pool but frayed around the corners may rank higher than an immaculate boutique hotel without a pool. Read reviews to really get a sense of what you're booking.
- Check directly with the hotel . I use Booking.com for 95% of my bookings because I don't pay Booking.com, I pay at the hotel, and there is usually free cancellation up to two days before check in. Still, I often check with the hotel directly to see if they have a better rate or are willing to offer an upgrade for the rate I have.
- Debbie of the Solo Travel Society says: Use the Hotel Tonight app . “Hotels put extra inventory on this service for day-of sales.”
- B&B's now have luxury options . At one time B&Bs were pretty basic. You'd get a room in a person's home. That's no longer the case. Many could really be classified as inns. Check out the Bed & Breakfasts site for B&Bs from all over the world.
- Try a home exchange. This can save you big time on accommodation and let you live like a local. You give up your home and you take over someone else's . With the Home Exchange website it doesn't have to be a straight swap. You can take a home in Seattle while someone from Japan stays in yours. Home Exchange has 65,000+ worldwide listings. Read Free accommodation: try a home exchange
- Glamping options . Luxurious camping is not an oxymoron. Go to Glamping.com to find glamorous camping opportunities around the world.
- Airbnb is well known for booking apartments, homes or rooms.
- VRBP for booking a holiday home.
- Join the club and/or have the card. Hotels like the Fairmont have free clubs you can sign up for to get you free WiFi – a benefit that one gets free at a hostel but, oddly, not at all luxury hotels. Always look for the special offers at the hotel you're booking.
- Use the Solo Traveler Accommodation Guide . Each listing in the guide is a recommendation from other solo travelers. Check it out for some great deals.
Save Money on Things to Do
- Step up to the bar . You don't have to stay at an uber-luxury hotel to enjoy some of the benefits. You can go to the bar for a drink, enjoy afternoon tea, or book yourself into their spa.
- Find the half-price ticket booths for theater . The prices are not always half-price but by buying tickets on the day of the performance at a half-price booth you can save lots. Read Affordable New York and Affordable London to find where the booths are in those cities.
- Experience that exclusive restaurant after hours . April Masini of askapril.com says “High end restaurants that are hard to get into, let alone afford, will be happy to serve you desert and a cappuccino after regular dinner hours. You’ll get the table, the luxury experience, the cuisine and the budget prices by skipping the meal.” Team that up with a night at the theater and you have a real luxury experience.
- Take your main meal at special restaurants . Likewise, it's also recommended to splurge on dining at noon hour when the prices are lower but the executive chef and kitchen are the same.
- Luxury car rentals for less. According to RentalCarReviews , Silvercar , an all-Audi car rental company, offers great luxury that doesn't cost a great deal. “There isn't a single location where the regular price from Silvercar for their premium Audi A4 is higher than a regular Full Size from the other companies. In a number of cases, Silvercar is less than half the price of either Hertz or Avis.”
- How about a limo for less? Blacklane offers black car service in 50 countries at a fraction of the cost of traditional limousine service, with as little as an hour's notice required. The reviews I read say that it's more expensive than a taxi but it's definitely worth the service when compared to limo rates.
- America – City Pass will give you up to 50% off admission to major attractions in most of America’s top cities.
- The London Pass
- The Paris Pass
- The Berlin Pass
- The Dublin Pass
- The Rome & Vatican Pass
- Mary of the Solo Travel Society says: Watch for discount sites like Groupon or GrabOne. You can choose your destination and search for deals. Here's a link to Groupon Canada. For US Groupon sites you can start here and from there choose your specific city to find deals. GrabOne serves New Zealand, Ireland, and Northern Ireland.
Negotiate a Great Travel Deal
- Erick of the Solo Travel Society says: Do your own research. “Avoid travel agencies. It will take hours in front of your computer but it will be worth it.”
- Ashmani of the Solo Travel Society says: Book months in advance . “Communicating directly with the hotels, back and forth, till a satisfactory deal is struck is worth the effort.”

9 Tips for Luxury Travel on a Budget
Posted on Published: January 23, 2022 - Last updated: March 7, 2023
Luxury travel is all about amazing trips filled with unique, eye-opening, and life-changing travel experiences couched in the comfort of plush, luxurious surroundings. While luxury travel on a budget may sound like a contradiction in terms, I’ve collected an impressive list of tips that can make a $3,000 vacation feel like a $10,000 vacation.
When calculating a luxury travel budget, many travelers opt for a shorter trip to maximize comfort and minimize stress during the trip, but with a creative approach to luxury travel, you can stay longer and in nicer accommodations without breaking your travel budget.
Luxury travel ideas are often just a fantasy we co-opt from travel influencers , but for those willing to adapt their trip, this style of travel is accessible to almost anyone. It’s easy to think that epic trips to amazing destinations, luxury accommodations, and personalized travel experiences are beyond a budget (or perhaps saved for a once-in-a-lifetime trip like a honeymoon or bucket list trip), but it doesn’t have to be.
Sure, when traveling on a budget, not every trip can tick all the boxes for your dream of luxury travel, but with a few minor tweaks, many travel budgets can be modified to create a far more memorable, luxurious trip without leaving you with a painful credit card bill.
10 Tips for Affording Luxury Travel on a Budget:
1. go someplace obscure..
To enjoy luxury travel at a budget price, head to less popular destinations- perhaps even places you’ve never heard of. When influencers are flocking to tropical spots like Kalua-Kona, Hawaii ( 5 Star hotel averaging $1,000/night ) head to a similar spot that’s less popular- like the Gili Islands, Indonesia (5 Star hotel averaging $35/night). Spending a little more on airfare can net huge savings on luxury accommodations.
Stretch your Luxury Travel Budget by Visiting Exotic Destinations
I love telling other travelers stories about spotting Chilean dolphins from the car ferry to Chiloe Island in Northern Patagonia and how unexpectedly awe-inspiring it was to join a pilgrimage marching up a mountain to a Romanian Orthodox monastery in the Maramures forest . These stories inspire. Unlike recounting a visit to a popular destination like the Bahamas, Paris, or Iceland, no one feels the need to mansplain or one-up my trip with details of their trip.
When you report on travel to a destination considered obscure to Americans, people are more inclined to be interested rather than internally compare to their own trip and feel the need to explain why their trip was more luxurious, or otherwise “better.”
When people visit the same few places, travel conversations can devolve to comparing lodging, activities, or nightlight experiences. When you travel to obscure or exotic destinations (which are often just a short train ride, ferry, or flight from top destinations), you become a mini expert. Stories of your travel- even though your version of luxury travel is on a budget- will be unique and interesting if you’ve explored a place that no one else in your social circle has ever been.
2. Let Exchange Rates Inform your Potential Destinations
This one’s simple: the same amount of money that can buy a few nights of budget accommodations in a place where the US dollar is weak can potentially pay for a week at an all-inclusive luxury resort in a nation where the exchange rate is more favorable to the US dollar.
Some budget-minded luxury travelers might choose, for example, a week receiving luxury services in the spas surrounding Hungarian thermal springs instead of a few nights on a budget in Paris. (See my article on the pros and cons of all-inclusive resorts or my 4 strategies to fit a resort into your vacation budget )
When a steak dinner is $5, and a stylish modern apartment is $45 a night (like I found in Argentina ), you can spend more of your budget on activities, luxury services, spa appointments, or just staying longer than you could in a more expensive destination.
TIP: If you can’t resist venturing into an expensive destination and absolutely MUST get a Paris-level experience on a tight budget, plan your trip so that your outbound or return trip has a brief 1 or 2-day layover to your dream locale on the way to or from a destination more in your budget.
Cheapest Countries for Luxury Travel on a Budget:

3. Travel During Shoulder Season.
In travel, shoulder season is defined as the months just before and just after tourism peaks in a particular location. For much of the northern hemisphere, shoulder seasons include the months bookending a typical school calendar’s summer vacation: March-May, and late August-October. This strategy is one of the best ways to visit Patagonia on a budget .
But shoulder seasons vary by region and climate. Ski lodges, for example, have shoulder seasons just before and after the weeks of prime snowfall, and many warm destinations may have shoulder seasons in last fall and late winter, surrounding peak travel around Christmas . No matter what time of year you are planning your trip, it’s certain to be shoulder season in some regions of the world.
Why I Love Traveling During Shoulder Season:
Shoulder season is an excellent time to travel to popular destinations because all of the attractions and services will still be open (something that may not be true for off-season travel), but lodging and other services priced according to demand will be a little less expensive. For the same travel budget, during shoulder season you can splurge on more luxury travel experiences.
The experience of visiting a region during shoulder season can be a unique and amazing experience – for example, while tourism to Patagonia drops off in their shoulder season of March to April (Southern hemisphere autumn) the trees of Torres del Paine National Park and the slopes surrounding the Perito Moreno glacier burst into autumn colors and paint the mountainsides in gold and red hues – something most Patagonian tourists will never experience.
4. Stay Longer
It’s counterintuitive, but staying longer can actually make the daily cost breakdown of a trip much lower. By staying longer, you’ll get more bang for your airfare buck- plus you’ll save money by accessing discounted nightly rates for weekly or monthly Airbnb, Furnished Finder , or hostel pricing. Having a semi-permanent place to stay also means you can get comfortable cooking in instead of eating out every night and set up your own vacation meal plan .
If you’re able to pack a portable office and work from the road as a digital nomad, luxury travel becomes even more accessible to every budget through earning money while traveling .
5. Choose Places that aren’t Trending.
Many popular and “trending” travel destinations aren’t popular because they’re the best, they’re popular because they’re easy to get to or have great PR , often both.
With crows of tourism comes higher prices and less authentic travel experiences. My least-fun destination ever was Chile’s Atacama desert during the height of its popularity among Instagram influencers . Because of the popularity, it was 5-6 times more expensive than other cities in Chile, and finding food options beyond pizza, beer, and hamburgers required walking to the outskirts of the village.
For many travelers, travel experiences become more profound and memorable when you escape from the curated tourist experience and discover destinations beyond the well-traveled tourist path.
6. Use Travel Budgeting Techniques.
None of us want to spend our vacation tracking expenses and reconciling receipts, but even keeping a simple running tally of those extra expenses that add up – my guide to budgeting expenses during travel makes it simple.
While most of us think of travel costs in terms of flights and hotels, the fact is that dining out, attraction-admission tickets, tours, and buying souvenirs are expenses that add up. Keeping track of these expenses day to day can help us stay on track for our spending goals during our trip.
Having an idea in advance of how much we can spend each day or week helps reduce money-related stress during our trip. And not having to spend energy stressing about money is peak luxury travel!
Hint , don’t try and stick to the exact same budget every day – travel is a little more fun if you have days that you splurge on a big adventure or a fine dining experience, then compensate with days spent on a self-guided tour or eating a simple sandwich from the grocery store.
7. Don’t Book Tours and Excursions in Advance
With very few exceptions, tours booked online in advance of your trip are always more expensive than tours booked at your destination. In popular tourist areas, you’ll have no problem booking the tour you want on the same day.
When I visited Patagonia , the online price for day tours into Torres Del Paine National Park started at $250 and went up from there. When I checked into my hotel, however, I was asked if I wanted to purchase the hotel’s recommended package, which offered the very same route, link, and guide for the equivalent of USD 67. Similarly, at the UNESCO site in the Danube Delta , which can only be accessed through boat tours, a tourist needed only to go to the harbor in the morning to choose from a dizzying variety of tour options leaving the same day.
Last-minute bookings can also be a great way to snag luxury travel services, tours, and hotels at a budget price. On occasion, I’ve even been known to skip out on even nonrefundable budget accommodations when I found a truly amazing deal on a last-minute luxury hotel room.
One exception: If your body needs accommodations for limited mobility, being a plus-size traveler, or speaking a language that may not be readily available, it can still be worth it to book tours in advance for a luxurious experience of not having to navigate late booking.
TIP: If you’re worried about the availability of last-minute tours- ask your hotel or Airbnb host for advice. The vast majority of tour-worthy destinations have more than enough tours to accommodate all the customers booking tours at the peak of their tourism season. If you’re visiting even slightly off-peak, finding a last minute tour should be no problem.
Finding the top tours on location:
In guided-tour-heavy destinations (like seeing Machu Pichu , the Danube Delta , or Torres del Paine, Patagonia ), you may find tour companies aggressively approaching you in the street of nearby cities with options to book a tour. Don’t. Instead, find a safe place where you can turn your attention to searching google for top-rated tour companies in the area, and seek out their offices (usually tucked away, with no street marketing since their reputation does that work for them).
A top-rated guided tour can be a way to relieve the stress of planning and lean into the experience of luxury travel on a budget.
8. Make your own Travel-Sized Supplies.
It likely comes as no surprise that often the luxury personal care products we depend on at home, end up being the most expensive, ounce for ounce, when they are packaged in the smallest containers.
To push back on this upcharge for travel-sized products, consider making your own travel-sized toiletries for luxury self-care while traveling. In addition to the obvious, like decanting shampoo into smaller travel-size containers, you can make your own travel size deodorant , travel-friendly washing detergent sheets , and waxing kits using my tutorials.
9. Eat Meals In
I know, I know. Eating meals in a hotel room probably sounds like the opposite of luxury travel, but hear me out. Eating in doesn’t have to be missing out. In fact, hitting a local bakery or deli for local staples, making a sandwich, and eating on a balcony, park bench, or grassy hill can be an experience far more memorable than an unremarkable meal in an over-touristed eatery.
Whether you’ve got a luxury or budget travel style, Cooking in an Airbnb , vacation rental, or even hotel room is a great way to stretch a travel budget (and sharing food is a great way to make friends while traveling alone !).
Final Thoughts on Luxury Travel on a Budget
Hacking your travel itineraries to enjoy luxury travel on a budget simply takes a bit more planning, flexibility, and creative travel budgeting.
Many travel adventures can be made more luxurious or enviable even on a small budget if you’re willing to get creative and flexible about your travel.
Cooking a few meals in, choosing amazing but harder-to-get-to destinations, visiting in the off-season, and closely watching your travel budget are just a few of the ways discussed in this article on how to enjoy luxury travel on a budget.

I have spent the last two days devouring your excellent website, but this article was particularly helpful. I'm going to Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Kosovo next month and am really struggling planning my last few days in Kosovo- and based on your article, I'm not doing that anymore! I'm going to arrive to my Macedonia hotel and ask the owners what they recommend. I've bookmarked your site and look forward to more of your writing! (And your art literally makes me happy. I love your artistic style.)

Insider Tips for Luxury Travel on a Budget
Dreaming of a five-star vacation but have a two-star budget? If you know the right strategies, luxury travel doesn’t have to break the bank. Savvy travelers know how to maximize their money and make it stretch far enough to afford opulent hotels and first-class fares.
From leveraging loyalty programs to picking the right time to travel, there are small changes you can make when planning your next trip that will help you travel luxuriously on a limited budget.
Follow these insider tips for luxury travel on a budget to have the trip of a lifetime (for less than you think.)
Be Flexible With Your Travel Dates
Traveling in the shoulder season, rather than peak season, can save you thousands of dollars in flights and accommodation. Bonus: You’ll enjoy fewer crowds, no restaurant waits, and zero lines for attractions.
For example, a basic room at the White Elephant Nantucket , a luxury resort on Nantucket, can cost over $1,000 per night in the peak summer month of July. However, travel in early June, when the weather is still warm, and the same room will cost you as low as $395 per night.
Traveling in off-peak times will also often eliminate minimum stay requirements at many luxury hotels.
You can find amazing off-peak and shoulder season deals in popular destinations, especially in Europe, where most tourists only come during a brief window in the summer.
Know How to Use Points and Miles
Flying first class can be phenomenally expensive—so why do you see so many people on social media posting snaps from the front of the plane? Insiders know that the most affordable way to fly in luxury is by using points and miles for travel.
You can often get significantly more value when cashing in credit card points by redeeming them for flights than as a direct one-to-one cash value. Thrifty Traveler outlines some of the best ways to use points and miles for business-class flights here .
Plan Far in Advance or Travel Last-Minute
You’ll likely find the best deals on luxury resorts if you book either very far in advance or at the last minute, when properties may discount unsold rooms.
For flights, utilize Kayak’s Best Time to Travel tool to find the ideal time to buy your ticket in order to get the best price.
Travel to Low Cost of Living Locations
To get the most out of your budget, head to destinations where your dollar will go the furthest.
A five-star luxury hotel in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand , will cost you just $100 per night, whereas a five-star luxury hotel in Manhattan will cost three times as much.
The cheapest countries to travel to for luxury vacations are:
Sign up for Airfare Alerts
Most airfare deal sites focus on the absolute cheapest prices. If you’re hoping to travel in style on your luxury vacation, sign up for deal alerts on first-class tickets from sites like:

Check Deals on Coupon Sites
Groupon and Travelzoo frequently have luxury resorts and vacation packages for a deep discount. Just make sure you check the blackout dates and other restrictions before booking, as well as pricing out how much it would be booked directly through the hotel (to make sure it’s really a good deal.)

How to Save Money on Travel This Summer
CR asks readers and financial pros for tips on cutting the cost of a vacation
Thanks to inflation, some consumers have been forced to adjust or even cancel their vacation plans this summer.
When you consider the cost of gasoline , plane tickets, hotels, and restaurant meals these days, it’s no surprise that people have had to rethink their travel plans.
With that in mind, Consumer Reports asked readers as well as financial professionals to offer some tips to help cut travel costs. Here’s what they came up with.
- Choose a location closer to home. Instead of canceling his plans, Josh Pelletier, a Consumer Reports reader, recommends simply adjusting them. “If you can drive rather than fly, you’ll normally save money, especially for families,” says Pelletier, who recently moved from Brooklyn, N.Y., to Austin, Texas. Plus, he says, “you only need one automobile, which can make it significantly less expensive than purchasing four or five plane tickets.”
- Get discounts at the gas pump. There are some great ways to save money at the pump . “Load a rewards credit card into the gas station’s payment app, which gives an additional 5 to 10 cents off per gallon when you pay that way,” says Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate.com.
- Use a gas station app or website. Smartphone apps, such as those from GasBuddy , AAA , and Gas Guru , are particularly convenient when you’re traveling and away from your computer. They’re available for Apple and Android devices. Many are free. You can filter results by fuel grade and sort by distance and price, as well as get GPS-guided directions to the station you choose.
- Check opt-in travel perks on your credit card. Your current credit card may be offering travel perks but may require action on your part to benefit from them, says Jake Hill, CEO of DebtHammer, a three-year-old payday loan relief firm based in Austin, Texas. "Check your existing cards for opt-in deals,” says Hill. “While it’s not going to numb all of the pain to your wallet, getting 15 percent back on every transaction at a gas station, for example, is a great way to help ease that pain,” he says.
- Look for cheaper airfares. Flying doesn’t need to be out of the question—although it may require some flexibility. Some tools like the Hopper mobile app and Google Flights can help calculate the best day to travel and give users charts to compare prices during selected periods of time. Pelletier has found that midweek flights often save money. “What I tend to do is time it just right,” he says. “A lot of times I’ll fly on a Tuesday or a Wednesday. I’ve found that even prices on Thursday tend to be high since people may be booking a long weekend.” Google’s tool showed that the price for a flight departing Monday-Friday from New York’s La Guardia airport to Raleigh Durham, North Carolina, for a seven-day trip in the third week of July, costs $238. A Saturday flight costs $293. And the Sunday flight is $315.
- Consider less expensive lodging options. An Airbnb or Vrbo can be less expensive than a hotel, especially if you are traveling with a large party, according to Pelletier, adding that having a kitchen to prepare some of your meals, rather than dining out, can reduce costs as well. Plus, as a pet owner, he finds it easier to find lodging that accommodates his needs. “In my experience they’ve been cheaper and I actually prefer them. I have a dog and it’s easier to find an AirBnb that’s dog-friendly,” he says.
- Look for free and inexpensive activities at popular tourist areas. Parks, beaches, and hiking trails are frequently unsung jewels. “I haven’t taken a restful vacation in some time, but I took a staycation in Austin and one of the things I did was go to Barton Springs downtown. It’s a cool, refreshing spot and it’s $3 to get in,” Pelletier says. “It’s super fun and there are miles of greenbelt. It’s nice to stroll and get a taco from a taco truck rather than a $15 appetizer at a restaurant.” Plus, he says, walking is an underrated way to spend time and relax.

7. Gourmet Dining on a Budget
Enjoy fine dining experiences without overspending by opting for lunch menus or prix-fixe dinners, which are often more affordable than dinner à la carte options.
8. Free and Low-Cost Activities
Research free or low-cost activities and attractions in your destination. Many cities offer free walking tours, public art displays, and cultural events that provide a taste of luxury without the price tag.
9. Negotiate Directly
When booking accommodations or services directly with the hotel or service provider, try negotiating for upgrades or additional perks. Polite negotiation can sometimes lead to unexpected luxuries.
10. Travel with a Group
Traveling with a group can lead to group discounts and shared costs, making luxury travel more affordable when split among friends or family.
11. Mix High-End with Mid-Range
Opt for a mix of high-end and mid-range experiences to strike a balance between luxury and budget. Spend on those things that matter most to you, such as a luxurious hotel room, while economizing on other aspects.

10 Travel Hacks for the Baby Boomer Traveler: Luxury on a Budget
Photo by oxana v on Unsplash
At my age (a respectable 70!), I’ve learned a thing or two about travel. Back in the day, luxury meant caviar and champagne, but these days, it’s about experiences that enrich your life without emptying the wallet. So, fellow travel lovers, listen up! Here are my top 10 travel hacks to experience luxury without blowing your retirement fund:
Travel Shoulder Seasons: Ditch the peak crowds (and prices!) and explore during the shoulder seasons. Spring and fall in Europe offer pleasant weather and lower costs. You might even snag deals on luxury accommodations during these off-peak times. I used to live in Paris (almost 50 years ago) and have always gone back to visit in October. It’s less crowded and walking around the city is so pleasant in the brisk Autumn weather.
Think Boutique, Not Big Brands: Luxury isn’t always about a big name. Boutique hotels often offer personalized service, unique locations, and a charming atmosphere, all at a fraction of the cost of a five-star chain. You’ll get more bang for your buck and a lot more atmosphere than you will at the large over-priced chains.
Embrace Culinary Delights, Not Hotel Meals: Skip the overpriced hotel buffets. Instead, explore local markets, cafes, and family-run restaurants. You’ll experience authentic cuisine, save money, and feel like you’re truly immersed in the culture. One of my favorite things to do is seek out communal dining spots, that way I get to meet new people and if they are local, I learn exactly what the locals order.
Pack Light, Travel Smart: Airlines love charging for checked bags. Pack a versatile capsule wardrobe and invest in a sturdy, carry-on sized suitcase. You’ll avoid baggage fees and have the freedom to explore without lugging around a heavy suitcase. Think about all of the times you’ve returned home with over half of your clothes unworn.
Public Transportation? You Bet! Taxis are convenient, but expensive. Many cities offer excellent public transportation systems – trams, subways, buses. Not only is it budget-friendly, it’s a great way to see the city like a local. Don’t forget about water taxis and ferries for great views of a city from the water.
Free Walking Tours: Get your bearings (and some history lessons!) with free walking tours offered in most major cities. You’ll often get insider tips from enthusiastic guides
Embrace the Power of Senior Discounts: Don’t be shy! Museums, attractions, and even some travel companies offer discounts for seniors. Ask, and you might be surprised what savings you can find. Check out places like AARP before you head out to see if they offer discounted admissions.
Luxury Doesn’t Have to Mean Expensive: Look for experiences that offer a touch of luxury without breaking the bank. Maybe it’s a sunset cruise with cocktails, a cooking class in a beautiful setting, or an afternoon at a luxurious spa.
Travel with a Buddy: Share the costs (and the adventures!) by traveling with a friend. You can split accommodations, transportation, and even meals, making your luxury adventure even more affordable. I met a woman when I traveled who used to have what she calls “bed picnics.” She picks up local cheese and crackers, a bottle of wine and some local foods and invites friends to dine with her in her room or have a picnic in the park.
Luxury is in the Details: Sometimes, it’s the little things that make a trip special. Pack a refillable water bottle, download audiobooks for long journeys, and savor a picnic lunch in a scenic spot. These small touches add a touch of luxury without adding a big dent to your budget.
Remember, luxury travel isn’t just about extravagance. It’s about creating memories that will last a lifetime. So, pack your bags, and get ready to experience the world in style, on a budget!

1. Planning for Savings:
The importance of advance planning.
Your journey to affordable luxury travel begins with meticulous planning. By reserving your trip well in advance, you can secure fantastic deals on flights, accommodations, and activities. Here’s how:
- Early Bird Discounts: Airlines and hotels often offer significant discounts to travellers who book months ahead. Be the early bird and catch those savings.

- Travel Apps: Download travel apps that notify you of fare drops and last-minute deals. This way, you can snatch up incredible bargains when they become available.
Flexible Travel Dates
In addition to booking early, being flexible with your travel dates can lead to substantial savings. Airlines and hotels often have dynamic pricing models, with prices varying based on demand. Consider the following strategies:
- Midweek Travel: Flying and staying midweek is often cheaper than weekend travel. This is especially true for business-oriented destinations where weekends are less popular.
- Avoid Peak Holidays: Planning your trip to avoid major holidays can result in lower prices and fewer crowds. Travelling just before or after peak holiday seasons can be a smart move.
- Off-Peak Seasons: Some destinations have off-peak seasons when prices are significantly lower. Research your desired location to find out when these seasons occur.
2. Choosing the Right Destination:
The destination dilemma.
Selecting the right destination is a crucial factor in making luxury travel more affordable. Consider these options:
Budget-Friendly Luxury Destinations: Some goals are renowned for offering luxurious experiences at reasonable prices. Think Bali for its opulent resorts or Portugal for its affordable yet exquisite wine and dining.
Bali: The Island of Affordable Luxury

- Spring in Paris: Spring (April to June) is a beautiful time to visit Paris. The weather is calm, and the city’s gardens and parks are in full bloom. Hotel rates are normally lower than during the peak summer season.
- Italian Romance in Autumn: September to November is a fantastic time to explore Italy. The weather is still pleasing, and you can enjoy lower prices on accommodations, making it ideal for a romantic getaway.

4. Accommodation Hacks:
Luxurious stays on a budget.
Finding lavish accommodations at discounted rates is an art. Explore various options, including boutique hotels, vacation rentals, and loyalty programs.
- Boutique Bliss: Boutique hotels often offer a personalized luxury experience without the price tag of big-name resorts. Look for boutique hotels in your destination and read reviews to ensure they fulfil your standards.

- Loyalty Programs: Many hotel chains propose loyalty programs that reward frequent guests with perks such as room upgrades, late check-outs, and complimentary breakfast. Joining these programs can make your stay more enjoyable and cost-effective.
Booking Directly with the Hotel
When booking accommodations, consider going directly through the hotel’s website. Many hotels offer exclusive discounts, packages, or loyalty rewards when you book directly with them. This not only saves you money but also ensures that you receive the best possible service during your stay.
Using Credit Card Rewards

- Cultural Experiences: Immerse yourself in local culture with budget-friendly activities like art exhibitions, theatre performances, and music festivals. Many cities host free or low-cost cultural events that provide a taste of luxury without the price tag.
- Free and Low-Cost Luxury: Some luxury experiences come at no cost at all. Take advantage of free activities such as exploring botanical gardens, wandering through historic neighbourhoods, or enjoying a picnic in a beautiful park. Research your destination’s calendar for free events and exhibitions during your visit.
Discounts and Passes
Before you embark on your luxury adventure, research whether your destination offers any discount passes. These passes often provide access to multiple attractions at a reduced price, making it more budget-friendly to explore the best a city has to offer.

Luxury Travel Advisors Share Insider Tips
With travel opening up and wanderlust adventure planning at full speed, we asked influential luxury travel advisors to share their top tips. Unlike virtual booking services, these travel gurus come armed with insider intel, global connections, and firsthand experience, to bring your vacay vision to life and ensure it goes off without a hitch.
Let us ask the questions
Jack ezon, embark beyond.
“At EMBARK Beyond Embark Travel we take a very different approach to planning travel, rather than have our clients ask us questions, we ask them questions to better get to know them so that we can match the right experience and right place to stay with the right client. We generally don’t like to ask about bucket lists that focus on destinations, we focus on aspirations and the ingredients our clients seek to best develop a plan to help create meaningful travel experiences that enhance and enrich our client’s lives furthering their life goals and passions. Some top things you should be prepared to answer are; what are your favorite 5 hotels, do you like or dislike beach, adventure, culture, or shopping vacations, do you want action or serenity, do you like to stay in one place or move around, do you like exotic, familiar or close to home, is the purpose of your trip to see things to say you’ve seen them or do you want to explore somewhere in more depth, do you travel heavy or light, as this determines how much they can move around.” – @jackezon
Be an empowered traveler
David prior, prior.
“The PRIOR audience is seasoned travelers with a creative spirit who are curious, seeking connection, and resonate with a certain aesthetic. The goal is to empower them with honest reviews of a hotel or destination, industry critiques, and by arming them with knowledge of global culture and traditions. I care so much more about a hotel reflecting the character of the place than the consistency of the thread count. Our clients come through referrals by people who have traveled with us or by something they have seen or read on our site or social media, so they trust us and our point of view. Rather than ask what they liked in the past, we ask them to tell us how they want to feel. We all know what sensory deprivation and everyone wants to feel alive again so if they tell me they want to feel sweaty on the dance floor in Berlin, taste that restaurant in Stockholm, or dive into the ocean and taste the salt on their lips in Sydney we write the prescription.” – @davidprior
A travel advisor is like a financial planner
Lia batkin, in the know experiences.
“Consider your travel advisor like a financial planner, someone you know and trust who will help you plan out a running bucket list of trips for the future. Getting to know each other and giving them as much information as possible ensures exactly what kind of trip you want, want to get out of it, and also when something doesn’t fit the bill. For example, if you’re going on a girl’s trip you might want to wake up to a beautiful relaxing view and have a great spa. If it’s a couples trip, you might want a super romantic room that you can spend time in, some activities, and somewhere with great food that your partner likes. My best advice is to narrow down your must-have list to 5 things, as you won’t always get everything in one destination. Working with a luxury travel advisor means you get more perks, personalized service, and intel as they take care of the little touches to make your experience special. If you’re celebrating your honeymoon, they can organize a lovely bottle of champagne when you arrive and your wedding song playing. Expedia can’t do that, nor can they let you know if the pool is closed, the service is lacking or the road to the hotel is terrible.” – @intheknowexperiences
Quiz your advisor on benefits and upgrades
Misty belles, virtuoso.
“Don’t be afraid to interview your travel advisor, as you’ll discover the ‘where’ aspect becomes about the ‘how’ and ‘why’. Ask them how they travel, why a destination is a favorite and their first-hand experiences. Also share everything about your travel style, from your passion points, dislikes to what you want in the minibar. And always ask your advisor about any additional benefits they can secure. A Virtuoso advisor can get you complimentary room upgrades, daily breakfast, welcome amenities, and resort credits. Our Advisor Catalog also does the investigative legwork, by showing advisors bios, areas of specialization, personal experiences, reviews, and recommendations.” – @Virtuosoltd
Customized service is key
Meg nolan, friend of a friend trip design.
“Making sure a trip is a dream one, comes down to personal travel preferences with Friend of a Friend Trip Design I have created a very customized bespoke service model. It’s an iterative process as like say interior design travel is not a one-stop-fits-all dynamic. During the initial phase, I work very closely with the client to cement a rapport and determine their likes, dislikes, and motivation by having them complete special preference forms and through phone conversations. If they say they want to go someplace they saw on Instagram or because a blogger went, I dial it back and ask what they are trying to accomplish. Do they want to unplug, check a box, go on a multi-generational vacation to create lasting family memories? Once I know their purpose, I customize the trip to reaffirm that theme and their goals. It’s important to note that while every trip is different, you are not the same traveler for every trip, so knowing why they want to go is everything.” – @megnolanVR
Go where they have gone
Kim hopkins, kim hopkins travel.
“The most important thing to ask your travel advisor is if they have been there. I always try to send clients to destinations and hotels that I know and love. My local contacts are my biggest asset and if I’m sending someone to countries like Morocco or Italy, I always book my driver and my guide. That way I can text them to ensure everything is going to plan. Having a local perspective and contact is critical, it saves you time, money and means you are going to have the best possible experience. Anyone can book a flight and hotel, but by engaging a travel advisor you are paying someone for their experience, expertise, and personal connections and that is the most valuable part of any trip.” – @kimhopkinstravel
Check the insurance and cancelation policy
Silvia castellano, founder iamitalianissima.
“In a post-Covid world, the first thing to ask is about the insurance and cancellation policy. It’s crucial all services on your itinerary are covered by insurance and to have a robust “cancel for no reason” policy so you can cancel 30 – 45 days before departure. It’s also crucial to talk with an advisor with experience of your destination. When I went to Asia my trips were planned by a travel advisor who is a real connoisseur of that part of the world and I still remember the tiny, remote places I went to on her advice, she described them vividly and it was a wonderful feeling experiencing them for real. Being honest about your expectations and goals is also the key to a successful itinerary. Always follow your interests and passions, as it’s a recipe for disaster traveling on a friend’s advice or social trend. Working with a travel advisor not only saves you time endlessly surfing the web in the event of a hiccup or more serious difficulty, they’ll know how to resolve it easily. – @i_am_italianissima

Saving Money on Luxury Travel: Insider Tips and Hacks Unveiled
Luxury travel is often perceived as an expensive and unattainable endeavor, reserved only for the rich and famous. However, savvy travelers know that it is possible to enjoy the finer things in life without breaking the bank. So we wrote Saving Money on Luxury Travel: Insider Tips and Hacks Unveile d to share insider tips and hacks to help you save money while indulging in luxurious experiences during your travels.
The world of luxury travel offers lavish accommodations, high-end restaurants, and exclusive experiences that can make any vacation feel more like a royal experience. With careful planning and a few strategic decisions, you too can transform your travel into a luxurious adventure without putting a significant dent in your wallet. We will delve into flight booking tips , utilizing luxury travel advisors , fine dining on a budget, and various other hacks to help you live your best life at a more affordable cost.
Key Takeaways
- Adopt strategic decisions to experience luxury travel on a budget
- Maximize savings through insider hacks, like booking flights wisely and consulting travel advisors
- Navigate fine dining and money management abroad for an affordable yet upscale experience
3-Day Weekend? Take off Monday instead of Friday
Planning a luxurious getaway can come with a hefty price tag, especially when you’re aiming to stay in upscale accommodations like luxury hotels or resorts. However, there are ways to save money on your 3-day weekend escape without sacrificing quality or comfort. One insider tip is to take off Monday instead of Friday , as Sunday often presents lower prices at luxury hotels compared to Fridays.
Luxury accommodations tend to be in high demand on the weekends, with Friday arrivals and Sunday departures being very popular. This demand can lead to inflated prices for both airfare and hotel rooms. To counter this trend, consider a Saturday-Monday trip instead. Not only will it likely save you money on your luxury hotel stay, but it may also result in lower airfare costs.
When planning a Saturday-Monday getaway, you can take advantage of the typically reduced rates offered by many luxury hotels on Sundays. As a result, your overall cost for accommodations may be lower, giving you more room in your budget for other travel experiences or additional amenities at your destination.
A perk of choosing a Sunday stay at a luxury hotel is that the atmosphere is often more relaxed , with fewer crowds and a quieter environment . This can be ideal for those seeking a rejuvenating break or a romantic weekend escape.
Flight Booking Tips and Hacks
When it comes to luxury travel, saving money on flights can make a significant difference in your overall experience. By being aware of some insider tips and hacks, you can find great deals on first class and international business class tickets to make your journey even more memorable.
First, it’s essential to be flexible with your travel dates. Airlines often have sales and promotions, so being open to different departure and return dates can help you find better deals. Additionally, consider booking your flights far in advance , as airlines usually offer the best prices for those who book early .
When selecting your seat, keep in mind that not all first-class and business-class seats are created equal . Some airlines offer a more luxurious experience with superior amenities and services, so it’s worth researching each airline’s offerings to ensure you’re getting the most comfortable and enjoyable flight experience possible.
To stay informed about the latest flight deals, set up flight alerts to receive notifications when airlines promote sales or reduced fares. Many airlines offer exclusive discounts to their newsletter subscribers, so signing up can get you access to these special deals.
One of the appealing aspects of luxury travel is the potential to find great deals in the form of mistake fares . Sometimes, airlines can accidentally publish extremely discounted fares, and being aware of these opportunities can save you a significant amount of money. However, keep in mind that airlines may correct these fares, so it’s essential to book quickly and be ready to adapt your plans if necessary.
Seasoned Traveler Hacks
Luxury travel offers unparalleled experiences and lasting memories. However, it can be challenging to afford such indulgences for many. Here are some insider tips and hacks to make luxury travel more budget-friendly.
Plan around peak times and off-season travel Timing is a crucial aspect of luxury travel. Seasoned travelers understand the importance of avoiding peak times, such as holidays and weekends, when travel and accommodations can be incredibly expensive. Instead, consider planning your trip during off-peak periods, when prices are generally lower, and destinations are less crowded.
Flexibility is key A flexible travel schedule allows for a greater range of budget-friendly options. It’s often easier to find discounted flights, accommodations, and experiences when you’re willing to consider multiple dates and destinations. Additionally, you should research your destination’s local festivities and events, as these can significantly impact both costs and the overall experience.
Use local currency Making purchases in the local currency can lead to substantial savings. Many foreign vendors offer better exchange rates when paid in cash, and using local currency helps avoid hidden fees from credit card transactions. Remember to exchange your money at reputable banks, exchange booths, or ATMs to get the best rates.
Utilize public transportation One often overlooked cost-saving measure is the frequent use of public transportation. In many destinations, public transport options can be a significant source of savings when compared to private car hires or taxi services. High-quality public transportation systems can offer a more authentic, immersive experience by allowing you to travel alongside locals and helping to better understand the destination’s culture and lifestyle.

Fine Dining on a Budget
With a little planning and insider knowledge, travelers can indulge in exceptional meals without spending a fortune.
One of the best ways to save on food while traveling is to work with a luxury travel agency, such as us at Solaz Travel to secure accommodations with complimentary full breakfast . Luxury hotels often offer a diverse and delicious selection for their guests to start the day on a high note. By taking advantage of this free meal , travelers can allocate more funds towards a fine dining experience later in the day.
Another option for a tasty and affordable meal is dining at the club lounge of your hotel such as at the Ritz Carlton Club Level . Club lounges typically offer a selection of snacks, food, and drinks at no additional cost throughout the day. By choosing to dine in the lounge, guests can enjoy a variety of options in comfortable surroundings without incurring extra expenses while simultaneously benefitting from the added amenities and service typically available in these upscale Clubs, such as dedicated Concierge .
When it comes to selecting a restaurant for fine dining, prix fixe menus can be a cost-effective choice. These pre-set menus allow travelers to enjoy multiple courses at a fixed price, offering a taste of luxury without overspending. Be sure to research the prix fixe offerings at restaurants in your chosen destination and make reservations in advance to ensure availability.
For travelers who prioritize affordability without sacrificing quality, consider dining at local restaurants that may not necessarily be high-end, but still deliver top-notch cuisine. This offers the opportunity to enjoy authentic regional flavors at a more budget-friendly price point.
Lastly, don’t overlook the value of your Concierge team at your hotel or resort. Your Concierge often knows their area better than anyone, and can even sometimes offer deals and discounts for restaurants, allowing luxury travelers to experience fine dining at a fraction of the cost.
Money Exchange and Management Abroad
When planning a luxury trip, proper money management and exchange practices can help save you money without sacrificing quality experiences. One crucial aspect to consider is obtaining local currency. Understanding commission and taxes when exchanging money can enable you to secure the best rates while avoiding hidden fees.
Before your trip, research the official exchange rate between your home currency and the destination’s currency. This benchmark enables you to compare offers and choose the best options to exchange your money. Keep in mind that rates change constantly, so the goal is to select a reliable source.
Opt for travel-friendly debit or credit cards while on a luxury trip. Many travel-focused credit cards charge no foreign transaction fees, resulting in cost savings. These fees, if not managed, can pile up during your stay abroad. Be sure to check if your card has any such fees and if so, consider getting one with lower fees.
Steer clear of currency exchange services at airports as they tend to charge high commissions and offer poor exchange rates. Instead, find reputable local banks or financial service providers to exchange your money or withdraw cash in the local currency. Utilizing ATMs for currency exchange might also save you money, but be mindful of potential fees and withdrawal limits.
Consider using money exchange apps like Revolut or Wise (formerly Transferwise). These services typically offer low or no fees and real, mid-market exchange rates, often saving you more money than traditional banks and currency exchange providers.
Lastly, keep track of your finances even when indulging in luxury trips. Knowing your budget helps you prioritize your spending and comfortably enjoy your adventure without incurring unexpected costs. With a mix of informed decisions and practical money management, you can optimize your luxury travel experience and save money in the process.
Use an Online Travel Agency? Think Again
When planning a luxury getaway, one might be tempted to use an online travel agency (OTA) for convenience such as Expedia or Booking.com. However, there are several reasons why choosing a luxury travel agency like Solaz Travel over an OTA can make all the difference in creating a memorable, customized trip.
First, luxury travel agencies often have access to exclusive deals and amenities that OTAs do not. They may have insider connections with hotels, resorts, and other service providers, which means they can secure upgrades , flexible check-in and check-out times , and other perks that aren’t readily available through OTAs such as resort credits and VIP status .
Moreover, a dedicated luxury travel agent will invest time in getting to know their clients’ preferences , allowing them to create tailored itineraries that cater to individual tastes and interests. Online platforms might not offer the level of customization and personal attention that a luxury travel agent provides, potentially leading to a less-than-perfect travel experience.
Another advantage of working with a luxury travel agency is their expertise . These seasoned professionals have deep knowledge of the destinations they’re recommending and can offer helpful advice on the ideal time to visit, unique attractions , and local customs . This insider information is invaluable in crafting an unforgettable journey that goes beyond simply checking off a list of tourist sites.
Furthermore, a luxury travel agent adds a layer of security and support during the trip. Should any unforeseen issues arise, the agent will be available to provide assistance and seek solutions, ensuring a stress-free vacation . In comparison, navigating customer support through an OTA may be less efficient, taking time away from enjoying the trip.
In summary, while OTAs may seem convenient, their impersonal nature and lack of insider access do not compare to the personalized experience a luxury travel agency can provide. For a truly unique and luxurious getaway, it’s wise to work directly with a trusted luxury travel agent who can make all the difference.

Additionally, keeping an eye out for limited-time promotions or bonus offers can help boost your points balance quickly. Another clever tactic is to take advantage of co-branded credit cards that offer sign-up bonuses and accelerated earning rates on travel-related expenses. By staying informed and proactive in managing your loyalty program accounts, you can elevate your travel experiences while staying within budget constraints.
When it comes to luxury travel on a budget, opting for off-season deals can be a game-changer. While many travelers flock to popular destinations during peak times, savvy jet-setters know that the real magic happens when the crowds thin out. Off-season travel not only translates to significant savings on accommodations and activities but also offers a more authentic experience with fewer tourists around.
Imagine strolling through cobblestone streets in Europe or lounging on pristine beaches in the Caribbean without elbowing your way through throngs of people. Off-season travel allows you to savor hidden gems at your own pace, uncovering local gems and immersing yourself in the essence of each destination without breaking the bank. So next time you’re planning a luxurious getaway, consider booking during the off-peak season for an exclusive and wallet-friendly experience that will leave you refreshed and rejuvenated.
When traveling to a new destination, it’s easy to be drawn to the popular tourist spots and well-known restaurants. However, embracing local experiences and eateries can truly enrich your travel experience. Seek out hidden gems recommended by locals – not only will you often find better food at lower prices, but also an authentic taste of the culture of the place you’re visiting. Insider tips for luxury travel on a budget include exploring off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods where small family-run restaurants serve up mouth-watering dishes that don’t break the bank.
Step outside your comfort zone and try dishes that may be unfamiliar but are beloved by the locals. Ask for recommendations from people you meet along your journey – they might just lead you to a hole-in-the-wall eatery serving up the best meal you’ve ever had. Embracing local experiences doesn’t just stop at food; immerse yourself in everyday activities like attending festivals, exploring markets, or taking part in traditional ceremonies for a deeper connection with the destination.
When it comes to choosing between boutique hotels and luxury chains for your next travel adventure, there are key considerations to keep in mind. Boutique hotels offer a unique charm and personalized touch that can make your stay truly unforgettable. From eccentric decor to locally-sourced amenities, these establishments often provide a one-of-a-kind experience that caters to the individual traveler’s preferences.
On the other hand, luxury chains boast consistency and reliability in terms of service quality and amenities. While they may lack the intimate atmosphere of boutique hotels, they make up for it with their extensive facilities and global reputation. For savvy travelers looking for insider tips on experiencing luxury travel on a budget, exploring package deals or booking during off-peak seasons can help you enjoy the extravagance of luxury chains without breaking the bank. By striking a balance between boutique charm and chain convenience, you can elevate your travel experience while being mindful of your budget constraints.
When it comes to balancing luxury and budget successfully, insider tips can make all the difference in creating a memorable experience without breaking the bank. Consider opting for boutique hotels or serviced apartments instead of traditional 5-star establishments – you’ll often find equally luxurious accommodations at a fraction of the price. Another secret to luxury travel on a budget is timing your trip strategically; off-peak seasons can offer lower rates while still allowing you to indulge in high-end amenities.
Moreover, embracing local culture can add a touch of extravagance without the hefty price tag. Seek out hidden gems recommended by locals for authentic experiences that feel luxurious without the accompanying bill. Additionally, leveraging reward points from credit cards or loyalty programs can unlock exclusive perks like room upgrades or complimentary services, further elevating your travel adventures within budget constraints. By blending these insider strategies with your own personal flair, you can strike the perfect harmony between luxury and financial prudence on your next getaway.
In conclusion, traveling in luxury on a budget is not only possible but also rewarding with the right insider tips. By leveraging loyalty programs, booking in advance, and being flexible with travel dates, you can experience high-end accommodations and amenities without breaking the bank. Additionally, taking advantage of off-peak seasons and exploring alternative destinations can further enhance your luxury travel experience while saving money. Remember to research and plan ahead to make the most of your budget-friendly luxury trip. So go ahead, start planning your next opulent adventure and make your dream destination a reality!
