The Philippine Embassy in Berlin

A Philippine Visa is an endorsement made on a travel document by a consular officer at a Philippine Embassy or Consulate abroad denoting that the visa application has been properly examined and that the bearer is permitted to proceed to the Philippines and request permission from the Philippine Immigration authorities at the ports of entries to enter the country.

Please note that issuance of a visa is not a guarantee that the holder will be automatically admitted to the country. The admission of foreign nationals into the Philippines is a function of the immigration authorities at the the port of entry. Philippine immigration authorities will not allow entry into Philippine airports and seaports of the following foreign nationals:

  • Those holding non-machine readable passports (e.g. hand scripted passports); or
  • Those previously deported from the Philippines or included in the “blacklist order” of the Department of Foreign Affairs or Bureau of Immigration; or
  • Those with incomplete documentation; or
  • Those with circumstances that would render them inadmissible for entry, even with a valid passport and visa issued by a Philippine Embassy or Consulate.

VISIT :  http://philippine-embassy.de/visa-application-and-requirements  for more information on the application process .

  • Processing of the visa takes five (5) to ten (10) working days , depending on the visa applied for and the applicant ‘s nationality. Some applications may require a longer period for evaluation and must wait for approval from the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila.
  • Visa applicants are strongly advised to finalize their flight booking only after the visa is granted . The Embassy will not expedite the visa processing to accommodate the applicant’s flight schedule.
  • Please note that NO REFUND of the visa application fee can be made for whatever reason.

Special Retiree Resident Visa (SRRV)

The Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV) is issued by the  Bureau of Immigration  (BI) of the Republic of the Philippines under the Retirement Program of the  Philippine Retirement Authority  (PRA). Interested parties can read more details from the website of the  Philippine Retirement Authority .

Extension of Authorized Period of Stay in the Philippines

In case a temporary visitor visa holder’s stay in the Philippines will exceed the authorized period of stay, he/she must secure an extension of stay from the Bureau of Immigration and pay the corresponding immigration fees.

No LSVVE shall be issued to non-visa foreign nationals whose stay exceeds 36 months, and visa-required nationals whose stay exceeds 24 months. Conversion to other visa category is also allowed. The implementation of the Long-Stay Visitor Visa Extension program is limited to the BI Main Office in Intramuros, Manila until further notice.

Thankfully, it’s easy to get there as a Filipino — you just need to apply for a Germany Schengen visa.

What to Do in Germany…?

Before we go on with the detailed Germany Schengen visa guide (for single, double, and multiple entries) , read through some of these disclaimers:

  • NO ONE  can give you the guarantee of your Germany Schengen visa’s approval — not even a lawyer, a consultant, a travel agent, or an embassy employee. Anyone who says otherwise is most likely going to be a scammer; so, what I’m rather offering you here is a comprehensive guide with helpful tips to  increase  your chances of getting that visa. Nothing more, nothing less.
  • There are different types of Schengen Visas (for fiancé, work, study, etc.) but my main focus for this article will be a Schengen Visa for tourism purposes only. To see a list of requirements for other types of visas by the embassy, go here .

Schengen Area

A Schengen Visa is a document that allows the holder to travel freely within the Schengen Area or Zone for a maximum stay of up to 90 days in any 6-month period . This Schengen Area is a group of 26 European countries (22 European Union member states and 4 EFTA member states) that have abolished passport and immigration controls at their common borders and they are namely:

These 27 countries are namely:

  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark [1]
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands [3]
  • Switzerland

[1] Excluding Greenland and the Faroe Islands [2] Excluding overseas departments and territories [3] Excluding Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, and the Caribbean Netherlands [4] Excluding Svalbard [5] With special provisions for Ceuta and Melilla

There are certain nationalities worldwide that are exempted from applying for a Schengen Visa, but as Philippine passport holders, in order to visit one or more of these Schengen states, we are required to apply for the visa. (Remember, Schengen Tourist Visa holders are NOT allowed to live permanently nor work in Europe, they only have the right to travel as a temporary visitor within the allotted timeframe indicated on their visa.)

» READ: How to Stay Longer in Europe

NOTE: It helps to mention that there are non-Schengen members in Europe that allow entry to their country if you have a Schengen Visa, namely: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Macedonia, Monaco, Montenegro, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Turkey, and Vatican City.

HOWEVER, you must check these details beforehand since their rules might have changed. Plus, customarily, only multiple-entry Schengen visas are allowed. For starters, you can check this list for a list of countries you can visit with a Schengen visa .

» When should I apply for a Schengen Visa?

Apply as early as 6 months before your planned trip date departure.

You can apply several days before your trip, sure — but it’s always best that you give enough time for the embassy to look into your application. After all, you wouldn’t want to make plans only to have the embassy provide you with a visa that has a validity period that’s NOT within your intended travel dates.

» Where should I apply for a Schengen Visa?

For Schengen visas that have the main purpose of visiting a friend/family/national or reuniting with a fiancé/husband/etc. in a Schengen state, naturally, you should apply in the corresponding Embassy of the country where that person comes from.

Meanwhile, if you are planning to visit several Schengen countries for your trip, your application must be made at the embassy of the main destination country — meaning, the country where you will be staying the longest . If the length of stay is almost the same, it’s best to apply for the country that you will first fly or enter in.

So as an example, you must apply at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Manila only if according to your Europe itinerary, you will be staying the longest and/or have any of Germany in your itinerary.

» Which Schengen embassy will I have a better chance of getting a Visa?

There’s no such thing as an embassy that would easily give away Schengen visas. But, if it is a question of time — like which Embassy can you get application results the quickest — then that would be an easier query for me to answer, which then leads us to the question…

» How long does it take for Schengen Visa results to be released?

To the best of my knowledge, the following Embassies usually release visas earliest in an average of:

  • Switzerland Embassy : 5 days
  • French Embassy : 2-5 days
  • Norwegian Embassy : 5 days – the Norwegian Embassy also handles Visa processing for Schengen countries that have no Embassies here in Manila such as Iceland
  • German Embassy : 7 days
  • Belgian and Netherlands (Dutch) Embassy : 15 days – the Belgian Embassy also handles Visa processing for Schengen countries that have no Embassies here in Manila, like Luxembourg and Slovenia
  • Danish Embassy : 15 days
  • Italian Embassy : 15 days

It can surely take longer if they need more documents or details from you.

Application Process for Germany Schengen Visa

Step 1: determine the type of germany schengen visa you need to apply for.

There are various types of Germany Schengen visas out there that you can apply for:  a visa for residence, a visa for family visits, a visa for visits to friends, a visa for studying, a visa for work, a visa for being a spouse, etc.

For this particular guide though, I will  only  be discussing the requirements for a short stay (less than 90 days)  tourist visa  since it’s an experience that I’ve gone through myself.

So if you have a different situation or purpose of visit, it’s best that you head over to this page  for more information.

Step 2: Register with the German Embassy via VIDEX

You first need to visit the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany’s VIDEX website — this is basically where you will accomplish, download, and print your visa application form (to be submitted later to VFS during your appointment).

To do this:

  • Go to VIDEX website and complete all five (5) sections by filling it up with your personal and travel information as requested.
  • Once done, simply click the blue “ Continue ” button at the bottom, and a pop-up will show. Click “ Download PDF ” to download your filled visa application form.
  • Print this .PDF file under its actual size (see print settings here ).

Some important things to take note of:

  • Under ‘Name at birth ‘ of section 1 – Personal details , this should be filled in with your middle name. For example, if your name is Juan Cruz Santos, you should input “Cruz” (your middle name) under ‘ Name at birth’ .
  • For date of birth, use the German format: date.month.year
  • Don’t forget to input your telephone or mobile number AND email address under section 2 – Contact data which details your address.
  • For your passport details, input the Philippines under ‘ Issuing state’ , and DFA under ‘ Issued by’ , and then the location of the DFA that issued your passport (e.g. Manila) under ‘Issued in’.
  • For section 4 – Travel Data , under ‘ Type of reference’ , you can select either an ‘inviting person’ or a ‘hotel’ (see “Step 4” of this guide below to know how you can make a dummy booking for a hotel — this can be any of the hotels in Germany that you intend to stay in) . When filling this up, the address MUST be in Germany. Do NOT forget to include their contact number and email address.

Step 3: Book your appointment with VFS & pay the service fee

The German Embassy processes applications via their external service provider, VFS Global . Unfortunately, you  cannot just walk into their office to lodge an application because you need to book an appointment first online.

Additionally, VFS charges a small service fee for processing your visa and you need to pay this at the time that you make your appointment on their website — this service fee is still separate from the visa fee that the Embassy charges.

To secure a time slot and pay the service fee…

  • Go to VFS’ website and click the button that says ‘ Book now ‘.
  • In the next page, you need to click ‘ I don’t have an account’ to register. Simply enter your details in the fields and then click ‘Register’.
  • Go to your email and click the activation link that you received from VFS.
  • On the VFS website, log-in and then click ‘Start New Booking’ . Select the VFS location you want to go to (either Cebu or Manila ), followed by ‘ Short Stay Visa ‘, and then ‘ Tourism ‘ as a sub-category.
  • Click ‘Continue’ and then enter your personal details.
  • On the next page, it will say that you can add other applicants — however, VFS indicates that if you are traveling with your family or a group, you need to book individual appointments for each individual (hence, they need to create their own accounts).
  • Click ‘Continue’ which will lead you to the booking page. Select the date and time slot that you like.
  • Click ‘Continue’ again — this page shows additional services that VFS offers; but personally, you do NOT need any of these.
  • Click ‘Continue’ once more. Review all your details and then click ‘I accept the Terms & Conditions ‘. Press the button that says ‘ Pay Online’.
  • Php 1,150 for VFS Manila
  • Php 1,210 for VFS Cebu
  • The system accepts payments via credit card, debit card (Mastercard/Visa/JCB), GCash, Grab Pay, and UnionBank Web Pay.
  • Fees are non-refundable if you do not show up on your appointment date. Refunds will only apply if the appointment has been canceled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled date. To request a refund, simply email [email protected]
  • Payments via VFS can take up to 2 hours to process. If your payment has not been processed, wait 2 hours before creating a new application and new payment. BUT if payment has been deducted from your account but VFS did not send an email confirmation, send an email to [email protected]

Step 4: Prepare the required documents for your application

As I’ve mentioned, I am only going to tackle the requirements for a  tourist visa .

If you have other reasons for tourism such as visiting other people such as family or friends, or for work, etc., check the corresponding requirements on the VFS website , or see the links below:

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Bring all your original documents for checking.
  • Photocopies must be clear and readable. Remove staple wires and paper clips from your documents.
  • Feel free to add supporting documents to help strengthen the purpose of your application.

Requirements

  • Tourist Visa Checklist.  Download this checklist , print it, and then check the items as you go. Don’t forget to put your signature at the end. .
  • You must photocopy the first page containing your personal information, as well as ALL the additional pages that contain visas and stamps that are both valid and expired in the past 5 years. .
  • 2 passport-sized pictures.  These must have a white background, must not also be older than 6 months, and must be sized at 35 x 45 mm. Take note that edited photos are NOT accepted. .
  • You can paste (do NOT staple) one of your passport-sized photos into this form. Don’t forget to put your signature on the last pages. .
  • Details regarding your travel itinerary.  For this, it’s good practice to include a personal  cover letter along with this itinerary document so that you can properly explain the purpose of your trip — this becomes essentially helpful when you want to apply for a double or multiple-entry Germany Schengen visa. To see a sample cover letter and travel itinerary, you can view and download my file here . .
  • Later on, in case you want to book your flight, my go-to platform is Skyscanner since they offer the best flight deals:
  • I usually reserve my hotel stays via  Booking.com  and/or  Agoda.com . With them, you can reserve a hotel with NO  pre-payment and you can even cancel the booking a day before your arrival with NO cancellation charges at all. So yes, you can make reservations without any payment, you can change the reservation anytime, AND you can cancel them at no cost as well if in case your Germany Schengen visa is not approved. .
  • Original bank certificate/transcripts for the last 6 months .
  • For international providers, HeyMondo is accepted by the embassy and if you click this link , you get a 5% discount. The benefit of booking an international provider is that it’s easier to purchase as it is all done online in just a few clicks. (For submission, you can simply print the policy and present to VFS).

  • OPTIONAL : – Proof of legal custody for minors with parents whose marriage was dissolved/annulled – Death Certificate of the other parent issued by Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA – former NSO) on security paper (SECPA) – DSWD Travel permit

NOTE:  Take note that if you still have a valid Schengen visa for more than three months, the current Germany Schengen visa application will not be processed and it will be returned to you along with the visa fee — but not the VFS service fee.

You will also have to leave your passport with VFS and the Embassy during the whole process of the application.

Step 5: Submit your application at VFS on your appointment date and pay the visa fee

It helps to arrive early for your Germany Schengen visa appointment (at least 15 minutes before your schedule) and the VFS address for both Manila and Cebu are:

German Visa Application Centre – Manila M01 Mezzanine Floor, Ecoplaza Bldg., Don Chino Roces Ave., Makati City 1231 Philippines [email protected]

German Visa Application Centre – Cebu, Unit 503, 5th Floor, Kepwealth Center, Samar Loop Cor. Cardinal Rosales Avenue Cebu Business Park, Cebu City 6000 Philippines

The process usually goes like this when I visited the Manila branch:

  • Arrival and waiting period.  Once you arrive at VFS, the security guard will confirm that you have an appointment and then hand you a document slip which you need to submit to the right window. Find a seat in the waiting area and wait for your name to be called.
  • If in case you have any missing documents, the staff will inform you about that.
  • If you have applied previously for the last 59 months you do not need to re-enroll your biometric data. However, there will be cases where you may need to re-submit your biometric data even if you have enrolled in it previously. In such cases, VFS will let you know.
  • Do NOT wear colored or magnifying contact lenses which could alter your appearance.
  • Php 4,590 (EUR 80) for 12 years old and above
  • Php 2,300 (EUR 35) for 6-12 years old
  • FREE for children under 6 years old and spouses of German or EU national
  • There’s an additional fee of Php150 if you want to send the visa results to you by courier. However, sending passports via courier is at the applicant’s own risk. The Embassy assumes no responsibility for this. (Delivery will be done in 1-3 days within Metro Manila and 2-5 days if the address is in the province. Should the mailing address be outside a serviceable area, you may have to pick up your passport at the nearest courier branch.)

NOTE:  Be advised that payment of these fees is NOT a guarantee that the visa will be granted. It also helps to note that these are non-refundable and non-transferable if your application is denied or if you decide to terminate your application.

The German Embassy still reserves the right to ask you to appear for a personal interview after checking your visa application.

Step 6: Wait for the results of your Germany Schengen visa application

When the Embassy of Germany in Manila is done assessing your application, they will send back your passport and documents to VFS. Consecutively, VFS will send you a text message or email that you can pick these items up.

Make sure to bring your ID and the payment receipt when claiming your passport and results .

NOTE:  You can check or track the status of your application online via VFS on  this page . To access this service, simply use the Reference Number present on the invoice/receipt issued by VFS with your last name. Please remember that the time for passport collection is from 2:00PM to 4:00PM from Monday to Friday, except on weekends and holidays.

Some other things to remember:

  • If you cannot personally come to pick up your documents, you may send a representative on your behalf with your authorization letter, photocopy of your ID, payment receipt, and a valid ID with a picture of your representative.
  • The German Embassy will NOT assume any responsibility if your visa application is rejected. And if it does get rejected, you will be given an  information sheet that shows the procedures you can take in order to ask for an appeal.
  • If your German Schengen visa application is accepted, make sure that your details are correct on the visa sticker. If there’s any mistake, you can contact the VFS office or the Embassy ASAP.
MY EXPERIENCE: – When I applied for a single-entry tourist visa, I got my results in 7 working days

TIP: It’s a good idea to crosscheck the prices with other popular travel insurance providers like World Nomads and HeyMondo (as my reader, you get 5% off)! . However, take note that a travel insurance’s affordability typically means lesser coverage; so please always ensure that you read the fine print in order to decipher which travel insurance company is the right fit for you and your trip!

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

You can pay with your credit card/debit card (Mastercard/Visa/JCB), GCash, Grab Pay, or UnionBank Web Pay.

Unfortunately, you can’t. You can try asking for a friend or relative’s credit card in order to pay the fee online.

It’s not required, but it’s good practice to provide one. You can see my example here .

Most of the Schengen member countries need you to show that you have at least EUR 50 (Php 2,500+) per day of your stay. You can use this as a standard and this is the bare minimum, that’s why I suggest that you add way more money to it if you can.

There is no border control within the Schengen Zone, so yes — you can deviate from your original plans BUT only for as long as they’re within the Schengen member countries (unless, of course, you have a double or multiple-entry Schengen visa) and within the allowable dates stated on your visa.

Refer to this article which showcases a Schengen stay calculator.

Yes, it’s possible! According to the recent Schengen visa code, you can get a 1-year multiple-entry tourist visa if you have obtained and lawfully used three (3) Schengen tourist visas in the past 2 years at the time of your application. You can get a 2-year multiple-entry tourist visa if you have obtained and used a 1-year multiple-entry visa within the previous 2 years; and lastly, you can get a 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa if you have obtained and used a 2-year multiple-entry visa in the past 3 years.

Hello Aileen,

Thank you for sharing this post, it is very helpful! Just wanted to seek help from the flight reservation under onewayfly, this is for my visa application. What should I click under:

Validity ticket? is it valid 48 hrs or 14 days?

Aileen Adalid

You should book the validity depending on when your scheduled appointment is with the Embassy. To be sure, most people purchase the 14-day one a day before their visit to VFS. Hope this helps!

Hi! If I get issued a single entry visa, does it mean I cannot get out of the country of arrival? Say I arrive in Germany (and my departure back to PH is also from Germany), does it mean I cannot do intercountry travel?

If you’re granted a single-entry Schengen visa from Germany, it means that you can travel to other Schengen member states too (e.g. France, Italy, etc.) as long as you do NOT exit any of these Schengen member states and as long as you go around within the validity period. The moment that you exit any member Schengen state and enter non-Schengen countries (e.g. Croatia, Romania, etc), then you cannot enter the Schengen area again (Germany included). Hope this helps!

Benita

Thanks for sharing your article! Very helpful

I’m happy to hear that, good luck with your Germany visa application!

SCHENGEN VISA via GERMAN EMBASSY: Requirements & How to Apply

SCHENGEN VISA via GERMAN EMBASSY: Requirements & How to Apply

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

After fulfilling a life-long dream of visiting Paris two years ago, I set my eyes on Munich. Funny because when I told my German friends on separate occasions that Munich is one of the top European destinations I wish to see, I had the same response. “Munich, dream city? Really?” they said while letting out a snicker. An inquiring word would follow, “Why?” I’m not sure, either, to be honest. I blame my love for football. I’ve been a fan of the German National Football Team since the Japan/Korea World Cup in 2002 as well as Bayern Munchen until Oliver Kahn retired in 2008.

But this trip won’t be all about Germany. I am planning on stopping at multiple European cities. Either way, I needed to apply for a Schengen visa . If you wish to get yours via the German Embassy, below are the things you need to know. Note that this is for Filipinos visiting as tourists only.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

WHAT IS A SCHENGEN VISA?

The Schengen Visa is a travel document that allows the holder to enter any of the 26 states that are part of the Schengen agreement. Think of it as an almost all-access pass to many countries in Europe, eliminating the immigration borders within the Schengen zone and the hassle of having to apply for a visa for each individual country. These are the countries who are part of the Schengen Zone:

But hold your horses. You can’t apply just anywhere. You need to figure out which embassy to lodge your application, and it will depend on the purpose of your trip or your overall European itinerary. The rule is, you apply at the embassy of the country you will visit or where you will be staying the longest if you’re visiting two or more countries.

WHO CAN APPLY AT THE GERMAN EMBASSY?

Apply at the German Embassy only if ANY of these is true:

  • You’re going to Germany only and will not visit any other country.
  • You will visit multiple Schengen countries but you will stay the longest in Germany.
  • You will visit multiple Schengen countries but the main purpose of your journey is in Germany. (Example: you will attend a conference in Germany but you plan on going out to other Schengen countries while you’re there.)
  • You will stay in multiple Schengen countries for exactly the same number of days, but Germany is your point of entry (first in your itinerary).

You can’t apply at the German Embassy when the only country you’re visiting is France. You can’t apply at the German Embassy if you’ll be staying in France for one week and in Germany for two days.

Many of my friends who visited multiple countries in Europe chose to apply at the German Embassy because they work fast and are generally more forgiving. Along with the French and the Dutch embassies, the German office is known in my travel circle as more considerate to applicants.

I can attest to that. My whole visa application process went smoothly, and the officers that accepted our papers were friendly. Serious, yes, but pleasant and totally respectful.

You can apply up to 90 days (3 months) in advance. While the German Embassy works quickly, it is wise to give some time allowance just in case they ask for additional documents.

LIST OF GERMAN SCHENGEN VISA REQUIREMENTS

I noticed that requirements are almost the same for Schengen states. What varies is how they process it. For example, unlike the French Embassy which demands two sets of copies of each document, the German Embassy needs just one.

While waiting for the date of appointment, gather the following documents, grouped according to type and arranged in the right order. You can also find the document checklist for tourist visa here and visitor visa here .

A. Your Identification Documents

  • Original current passport . Valid for at least 3 months from the end of intended stay and must have at least two empty pages. You must also submit your old invalid passports.
  • One passport-size photo . White background.

B. Your Application Documents

  • One fully accomplished application form . Fill it out online here . Print it out and sign it by hand.
  • One copy of Declaration according to § 54 AufenthaltsG . Make sure you sign it by hand.

C. Your Travel Plan

IF VISITING FAMILY OR FRIENDS:

  • Proof of relationship with the sponsor. These can be birth certificates, marriage certificates, written correspondence between you and your sponsor, and proof of telephone connections and other evidence of relationship between you and your sponsor.
  • Invitation letter , containing the host’s exact address, the purpose of travel and the full length of travel and stay.
  • Details regarding the means of travel for the outward and return journey (details regarding the airline), no flight ticket is needed.

IF APPLYING AS A TOURIST:

  • Your day-to-day itinerary . It’s best to write a letter explaining the purpose of your trip and showing your detailed itinerary. Indicate the places you will visit and tours you will take. Here’s a sample letter and itinerary .
  • Flight reservation . Reservation ONLY. DO NOT PAY for flights until your visa is approved. Find a travel agency that can reserve flights for you. They usually charge a few hundred pesos for this. We got ours from Gazelle Travel & Tours: Get Flight Reservation Here .
  • Hotel reservations . You DON’T need to pay for your hotel this early. You can simply reserve rooms. I personally prefer Booking.com in cases like this because I can cancel or change my booking any time before the provided date without any additional fees. You can also get one from a travel agency: Get Hotel Reservations Here .

D. Visa Fee

  • Children up to 6 years: FREE
  • Children from 6 to 12 years: EUR 35
  • Applicants older than 12 years: EUR 60

Fee is also payable in Philippine pesos based on exchange rate at the time.

E. Proof of Financial Capacity

  • Bank statement . Must show records of the past six months, with a confirmation by the bank.
  • Other proof of income . Although not required, I submitted invoices and pay slip equivalent to prove that I earn enough to support this trip financially.

IF VISITING FAMILY OR FRIENDS IN GERMANY :

  • Bank statement . Must show records of the past six months, with a confirmation by the bank. OR
  • Formal Obligation (both original and a Xerox copy) according to §§ 66-68 of the German Residence Law, given by your host at the aliens authority “Ausländerbehörde”) in Germany.

F. Travel Insurance

  • Travel health insurance (for medical expenses and repatriation). Coverage must span the entire duration of the trip and must be valid for all Schengen countries. Coverage sum must be AT LEAST EUR 30,000. Philippine insurances must be accredited and given in the original and photocopy. German insurances are accepted as a photocopy or scanned copy.

You can easily purchase a Schengen-accredited travel insurance online. One of the easiest to book is PGA SOMPO TravelJOY Plus SUPREME plan. It is specifically designed for Schengen visa applications, so yes, it is accredited by Schengen embassies.

The best part, The Poor Traveler readers get a special rate when you book on the PGA Sompo website ! Just use the promo code: WORTHIT .

TravelJoy PGA Sompo Code

G. Proof of Rootedness in the Philippines

If employed, provide proof of employment. It can be:

  • Most recent income tax return (ITR)
  • Certificate of employment. Must include employer’s full name, address and contact number, and explain your position or professional designation, income, and tenure.
  • Leave of Absence Approval Letter. Signed by your employer or immediate superior.

If self-employed, provide proof of registration and business activity of your company

  • SEC and DTI registration documents
  • Most recent income tax returns (ITR)
  • Bank certificates or invoices

If student, provide the following:

  • Proof of employment
  • Letter of exemption from studies (if applicable)

If you own real estate property, provide copies. They may be:

  • Deed of sale

Both parents must appear personally during the submission of the application.

  • Parents must bring valid ID.
  • Original birth certificate of the minor applicant
  • Declaration of consent by the legal guardian, signed in front of a German consular officer
  • Passports of the legal guardian (original and photocopy of the bio page)
  • Proof of legal custody (for minors with parents whose marriage was dissolved/ annulled)

  • DSWD Travel Clearance, if traveling without the parents.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A GERMANY SCHENGEN VISA

1. book an appointment online..

Whenever I apply for a visa, the first thing I do is book an appointment. Slots are filled fast and there are months when the earliest available schedule is a month later. It’s also my way of pressuring myself, LOL. Anyway, here’s how to get a schedule.

  • Visit the official Appointment System Page and under the Visa, click on the link that says Continue.
  • On the next page, choose Schengenvisa (click Continue).
  • On the next page, click Continue at the bottom right corner of the page. You will then be asked to enter the Captcha code displayed.
  • You will then be given a list of dates with available slots. Pick the best date for you. Remember, the processing takes 1-2 weeks. Don’t choose a date that is too close to your intended travel date.
  • Pick the time that is most convenient for you.
  • Accomplish the form.
  • Save and print the Confirmation Page. You will need it when you visit the Embassy to submit the requirements in person.

2. Complete the Requirements.

You’ll find the complete list of requirements above. Put them in the right order (as listed above).

THEPOORTRAVELERKLOOK

3. Submit your application.

UPDATE: Starting February 18, 2019 (February 21, 2019, in Cebu), submission of GERMAN SCHENGEN VISA APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS must be coursed through VFS Global. We’re still gathering more details on the application process, so please check back in the future.

If your appointment is prior to these dates, you can still submit at the German Embassy. Below is the exact address of the embassy:

The Honorable Consul German Embassy Manila 25/F Tower 2, RCBC Plaza 6819 Ayala Ave (cor Sen. Gil Puyat Ave) Makati City, Philippines

Once you’re at the RCBC Plaza, here’s how it should go:

  • Register at the desk on the ground floor. You will also need to deposit your bag because only documents are allowed to be carried to the Application Center.
  • Take the elevator to the 25th floor. Once there, turn to your right for a quick inspection. They will check your passport to confirm appointment.
  • After inspection, walk to the other end of the room and you will see the mobile phone pigeonholes. Deposit your phone. You will be given the key.
  • Enter the Application center and wait for your turn.
  • Once your number is called, approach the appropriate window. You will be interviewed by the Consular Officer. Don’t be nervous. Relax and answer confidently and truthfully.
  • They will get your fingerprints electronically. Just follow the Officer’s instructions.
  • Fill out the 2GO form that will be handed to you. Write the address where you want them to send your passport.
  • At the same counter, pay the visa fee. Make sure you have the exact amount to speed up the process.

That’s about it. All you have to do now is wait.

GERMAN VISA FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long is the visa processing.

Processing takes 1-2 weeks. I got mine after 7 working days.

For my co-blogger Vins, it was a different story. After over a week, he received a call asking him to email additional documents to prove his rootedness in the Philippines. The thing is, Vins has been a freelancer for almost a year now so he had no Certificate of Employment to send. Instead, he submitted via email a copy of another land title under his name and a copy of ITR from his previous employer. He also explained in the body of his message his situation. He got his visa after two more weeks.

How long is the validity of the Schengen Visa?

I don’t know for sure.

I think it depends on how long your trip is. When I applied at the German Embassy, my itinerary was good for 53 days. I was granted a visa valid for 60 days.

But when Vins applied again recently, his trip was 7 days long, but he was granted a 30-day visa.

Should I apply for a single-, double-, or multiple-entry visa?

Again, it depends on your itinerary and flight reservations. If your itinerary/flight reservations entail going out of the Schengen area once and coming back, then apply for a double-entry visa. If you will be flying our of the Schengen area multiple times, then go for the multiple entry visa.

Please take into consideration all your connecting flights . For example, if aside from Germany you will also be visiting Iceland (which is a Schengen state) but you’re flying via London (which is outside Schengen), you will need to count that as “going out” of the zone.

Key thing to remember is that double-entry and multiple-entry visas have to be justified. Don’t apply for a multiple-entry visa if you intend to stay in Germany the whole time. There is no need for your visa to be multiple and will probably just raise more questions.

What are the reasons why my application would be denied?

This applies not just to the German Embassy but also other Schengen embassies:

  • You can’t prove that you intend to return to the Philippines . You probably don’t have a stable job at this point, newly employed, or newly resigned, and it’s giving the impression that you plan on staying longer than your declared duration.
  • You can’t prove that you can financially afford this trip. You or your sponsor may not be in good financial standing.
  • You seem to not know the details of your trip . You may have appeared as though you’re not really doing what you declared you would be doing, which may raise some red flags.
  • Your purpose in Germany or Europe is unclear or dubious . This is why it is best to be specific when you’re detailing the reasons for your visit.

Do I really need plane tickets before applying? What if I get denied? Sayang the pera.

Nope ! Like I said before, you don’t need to purchase flight tickets. What you need are “ flight reservations .” It’s not the same as actual tickets. “Reservations” are just proof that you have blocked these plane seats, and you can cancel these in case your application is denied. Some airlines can hold the booking for you.

Travel agencies can also issue flight reservations. If you don’t have time to go to a travel agency, you can have it reserved online. When we apply for hard-to-get visas like Canada and Schengen, we hire Gazelle Travel and Tours , a DTI-registered and DOT-accredited agency. We created a form here so you can contact them completely ONLINE:

MORE INFO: Flight and Hotel Reservations

Do you have a sample daily itinerary format.

This is the format I followed.

Do you have a sample cover letter?

Yes. See below.

I’m traveling to multiple cities. Do I need to provide hotel reservation for all the countries I’m visiting or for Germany only?

If you’re staying at hotels, you must provide hotel reservation covering the entire duration of your stay. If you’re staying in multiple countries, you must submit hotel reservation for all the countries where you will be staying, not just Germany.

thanks sa info..

yoshke

hi, i have query sana on the online application form.. under the Reference part… did you leave that blank or used Hotel? i’m quite confused there…any tips?

Hi Augie! If I remember correctly, we chose No Reference Person. :)

Raine

Hello Yoshke. We are travelling as a group (me, partner and our 2 yr old son). Should we get different appointments or I can schedule one appointment and submit our documents together? Thank you!

vivian meneses

GOOD DAY YOSHKE, me and my daughter are applying for a schengen visa, do we need to have 2 separate application form and letter, but have the same appointment? or does my daughter dont need a application letter anymore. (my daughter is 14)

Yosh Dimen

Hi Vivian, ang alam ko po, you need 2 separate forms and 2 separate sets of documents. Not sure about the appointment kasi di ko pa natry mag-apply with a minor/family pero I asked a travel agent and she said pwede raw na same appointment kasi minor, pero separate sets of docs pa rin.

Di ko po yan sure ha, yun lang ung sabi saken, hehe.

Mark Lee Plaza

Would you mind telling the reply for this? Thanks.

Lea

Hi, Could you recommend an airline that offers cheap fare going to European countries :) Thanks :)

Hi Lea. The cheapest flights to Europe from Manila are usually with Turkish Airlines.

Anthony

Hi, is it a must to buy already a travel insurance prior to visa application? I found a website and it says the embassy will ask for travel insurance after you have been approved. Source: tripzilla.ph/schengen-visa-philippine-passport-holders/1258

Based on our experience (and all of our friends’), the insurance must be purchased prior to application.

Jennelyn C.

Hi! Just wanna ask to make sure regarding the proof of rootedness, it can be any of those right? Cause i wanna make sure if i can just submit Certificate of employment only not including the leOk ave of absence letter from the company. I would highly appreciate your answer. Thanks!

Yana Dazo

Hi yoshke, im planning on going to germany because i will visit my boyfriend. I just have a question about the application form on the purpose of travel part. For the proof of relationship, do i have to have a copy of his birth certificate? And what is the written correspondence between me and my sponsor. And what is a written invitation? Should he make a letter addressed to the consulate? Your response will be very much appreciated.

Hi I have a question regarding the cover letter. There will be 2 of us travelling and we will apply on the same date, is one cover letter enough or separate cover letter (but same content)?

for the category as to where to apply. Germany , Switzerland and Italy and France have the same number of days. All of them, 5 days. Our first entry point is Netherlands. But among these 4 countries , Germany is the first in the itinerary. Should we apply in Netherlands or Germany?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Mark, regarding the cover letter, I think both would work and would be accepted. Just make sure you explain well the purpose of your trip.

When you say “first entry point,” what do you mean exactly? Do you have a connecting flight in the Netherlands going to Germany? If so, I think Germany is still the right embassy. However, I’m not sure so best to confirm it with the embassy before you apply. If you want to be absolutely sure, you can simply adjust your itinerary and extend your stay in Germany even just for 1 day.

jovie

hi i have query about proof of financial capacity what if i dont have bank account? what documents i need to present? how much should be the amount of your bank account?

Ishy

Hi! Just a question. Pwede bang magfollow up ng status ng visa application sa German Embassy?

Grace hamid

Same q. Din po puede ba mag ask sa german embassy?

Chen

Just want to ask the validity of the schengen visa you were granted? 30days? 1 year? Thanks

Hi Chen! The itinerary I submitted is for 53 days, they gave me a 60-day visa.

Previously, I applied for a 7-day trip, they gave me a 10-day visa.

Hi ive read your blog and it helps me a lot to stay calm.lasr nov.28 2017 we had an appointment sa german embassy tatlo kame me my husband and my daughter ininvite kame ng sister at brother in law ko to visit them naipasa naman nmen mga documents ahm q. Ko lang kc may formal obligation naman na provide kaso mjo ung sagot ko sa tanung nia is hinde sgurado makakaapekto ba un?and normally sabe ni 1-2 weekz ang processing time kabado na kame kc 5 days na wla pa rin merong ibinigay na tracking no. Sa 2go kaso we dont know how to track pag nilalagay nmen ung 9 digits with letter duon sa tracking line “0” lang lumalabas anu po meaning nun?

Hi Grace. Yes, your answers during the interview, malaki bearing nun. Pero I waited for just a week, Vins waited for 3 weeks pero approved din naman. So may chance pa rin. Good luck!

Janette Panganiban

Did you really follow the sample itinerary you posted above? How much did you spend?

Hi Janette! Nope, the sample above is just that, a sample for this post. The sample itinerary that we submitted was much longer because our trip was 2 months long.

Patrick Torres

Hello plano po namin na magtravel sa germany at ibang schengen country ng boyfriend ko. Siya po gagastos lahat ano po requirements na kailangan? Salamat po

Same lang din. Tapos additional requirements:

– Proof of relationship with the sponsor – Written correspondence between you and your sponsor – proof of telephone connections and other evidence of relationship between you and your sponsor – An informal invitation by the host, in which information is given regarding the host’s exact address of residence, the purpose of travel and the full duration of travel and stay

Eli Debuque

Hi! i would like to ask what travel insurance do you have and how to obtain it. The only insurance i have is the one provided by our company and i think its not accredited. Thank you so much. And if my boyfriend has a relative (aunts) in germany, can he apply for visa under visiting family and pwede ba akong masali or hindi pwede? tourist visa ako? thankyou

Been using Pacific Cross insurance.

Not sure about your other questions though…

Jing

This is very helpful. I already have a Japan Visa, US Visa and now looking forward to get a Schengen Visa. Thanks for all the tips! :)

No prob! Good luck with your application!

Christine

Hello i have a problem with my australian visa i submitted it to canadian embassy and unfortunately got denied but they did not returned my documents including my expired visa in australia i did not also secure any photocopy of it. Do you think my chance of getting a schengen visa will be less because i have no australian visa to support? But i have a stamp on my passport of my travel to australia and a visa sticker ofjapan and korean visa. Im a bit down that i have no copy of my australian visa plus i got denied also in canada.

Hi Christine, did you apply for an Australian visa online? If so, you should be able to access a copy of it in your Immi account inbox.

Patrick

Good day yoshke. Pwede mag ask? Okay Lang ba na ang mag sponsor sa akin is not citizen in any schengen country? Pero taga UK cya. Shoulder nya lahat ng gastos. Thanks po

Hi Patrick. Naku, di ko alam ang sagot dito. :(

zaymah

hi, ask ko lang po if magaaply ng schengen visa, mother in law ko ung sponsor (but not a citizen of any schengen countries).. do i still need to provide my own ITR, or kahit certificate of emplyoment lang?

Kailangan pa rin po, unless may valid reason bakit wala ITR.

Sam

Hello po..I don’t have itr since ofw po Ako.ano po kaya pwede option for proof of rootedness?thank you

land titles/deeds, proof na may property ka sa Pinas.

john

Hi, do i have to book flights for other countries i will visit within the schengen zone? Or the entry point and the flight going back to manila would suffice? Thank you o much

Hi John, in my case, I only booked the incoming and outgoing flights. I didn’t book the flights within europe before the appointment. It didn’t become an issue but I’m not sure if that’s the case for all applicants all the time.

Anj pelari

Hi ☺️ I would just like to ask regarding sa rootedness dto sa pinas.. i dont have work, im not a student anymore, no business also, i dont own anything under my name, and im not below 18… there’s still a chance to get a visa? And if so, kailangan ko po ba talaga atleast na minention sa proof? Coz someone will sponsor me everything po kc. May idea po ba kayo? ☺️ Kc yung fiancee ko po ang mag support sakin. Thank you :)

Hi Anj, if you’re applying as a tourist, medyo malabo maapprove sa tingin ko. :(

kay dejesus

Hi we have the same situation ang pagka iba lang po namin is ang sponsor ko po is husband ko na US military na naka deploy sa Germany sya ang sasagot sa lahat ng gastos and also im currently pregnant right now. May chance po ba ang case ko?

It’s not just a matter of gastos kasi. Yung finances, if sponsored, pwede na yung formal obligation.

Yung rootedness yung mahirap. Whether sponsored ka or hindi, you still need to prove your rootedness, I think. So if unemployed and no properties, baka mahirap. Not idea if may effect yung pregnancy sa application and how, though. Best to consult a travel agency para mas definitive. Di ko rin kasi talaga alam. :(

inee

hi! naka lagay sa website ng checklist ng german embassy (Hotel-voucher or confirmation of the hotel / guest house that the accommodation has already been paid for) . pero pwd bang booked lang muna ang hotels kasi d pa sure if ma aaprove talaga

Yung sinubmit namin, reservations lang. Di pa namin binayaran.

nag show ka ba ng credit card transactions? if yes, from the last how many months?

Hindi na ako nagsubmit ng credit card bills.

me and my husband are planning to travel together as a couple sa germany and other schengen areas so I booked the same time and date at the appointment. question is, will we be interviewed together or not? because my husband needs to be backed up by me because yung business namin sa akin naka panagalan although he’s the one managing it. Concerned kasi ako if we get to be interviewed separately, his supporting documents may sound weak. although he has a business too under his name pero d masaydo malaki puhonan compare nitong naka pangalan sa akin.

Hmmm, feeling ko magkahiwalay. Not sure.

hi! me and my husband are paying for our trip financially, not sponsored. I chose germany as my 1st entry point because I have an aunt who’s a citizen there so I need to see her first before going to other schengen areas, also it’s my last entry point because I need to see her before leaving europe. question is do i need to show to the embassy an informal letter from her inviting me and provide documents to prove our relationship? also, i chose from the application the answer ‘tourism and visit family and friends’ from the question what is your purpose of travel.

Hi Inee, yes, I think so. You’d have better chances if you provide invitation letter and proof of relationship. Isa yan sa mga questions na talagang tinututukan nila, if may kakilala ka dun so makakatulong if meron kang proof of relationship and clear purpose of travel.

Cliff

Hello, is ITR really important? I am a freelancer too for 4 years now. Are property title (or Deed of Sale) and bank certificate enough to prove my rootedness in the Philippines?

Hi Cliff, they usually ask for ITR talaga. if you can’t, you can submit other proof that you have a consistent or stable source of income. You can submit invoices or contracts that you have with your clients.

Yes, I can submit bank statement, salary invoice (Paypal) and a letter from my client telling that I am working for his company since 2015 up to now. Anyway, can I use letter size paper for the documents? I know the standard paper size in EU is A4.

Hi Cliff, they don’t specify paper size but we used A4 in our past applications to the German Embassy.

Thanks guys. Cheers!

Ok thanks. I printed the documents in letter size paper kasi, Anyway, do you have sample of german visa checklist?

Please help how to correct the wrong email entered for an online appointment. Unfortunately my friend due to my mistake she wasn’t able to receive the confirmation of appointment.

How can I correct this entry or should I make a new appointment by using same details?

Please enlighten.

Hi! I honestly don’t know the answer to this. But you can post this in our support group. Baka some members have an idea.

Anne

Hi po, I just want to ask, necessary po ba yung cover letter? Ok lang ba yung statement of account na within 30 days na issued or do I need one that was issue within the week of appointment? I am applying for tourist visa by the way. Hoping for your reply.

Hi Anne, yung sinubmit ko di naman within the week. Pero tinanggap naman.

ARIANNE

Hi! Just want to ask how/when do you pay for the visa processing fee? Is it during your interview date?

Hi Arianne. Yep, on site. Immediately after the interview. :)

Arianne

Noted. Thanks!! :)

ARIANNE

Hi! Just want to thank you for doing this guide, really helped my family throughout the whole process. And yey! We got approved! :)

Thanks again! :))

Yayyy! Congrats! Family trip sa Europe! Nainggit ako bigla haha.

Dawn

Hello po.. Of all the documents does it need to have another copies of it? Thanks .

Hi Dawn, in our case, they just took one copy. But it’s always good practice to have an extra copy, just in case.

REZIEL PAR

Hi,im reading and analyzing your blog because im planning to apply for schengen visa!Im currently working here in Malaysia as DH!i travelled already in Singapore many times and Thailand as well! And now for my 30th birthday im Planning for European Trip!is it possible that they can approve my application or still low chances because i have a Domestic Helper working visa?

janice

hi there ask ko lang po nag apply ako sa german embassy last monday po den pag tues tinawagan ako na papabalikin due to my finger print status. is it an assurance pa po na approve yong visa ko?

Hi Janice, I dunno.

Razhel Green

hi Yoshke. Do you have idea kung magkano at least yung laman ng bank statement mo for higher chance na maapprove assuming I’m applying for a 10-day visa or 1 month visa? thanks in advance! :)

Hi! We answered that here: https://www.thepoortraveler.net/2017/01/schengen-visa-filipino-tourists-frequently-asked-questions/#How_much_money_should_I_have_in_the_bank_to_be_approved

Please update the link of ” Declaration according to § 54 AufenthaltsG.”. Error 404 page na kasi siya :( thank you!

Updated! :)

Migs

Hi! Just want to ask lang sana about the leave of absence approval, ang gagawa po ba nun is yung mag apply ng visa? Then papa approve lang doon sa immediate superior or employer? Thank you!:-)

Depende po yan sa company nyo. Yung dati kong company, sila na nagpoprovide talaga ng letter. Yung isa naman, kailangan ako magsulat. Depende sa anong process ng company nyo. Ask mo na lang HR nyo.

Xtian

hello… i will be travelling w/ my friend tru europe… spetember ang visa sched ko tru french embassy.. do i have to declare it sa cover letter na may kasama ko ? besides sakin nakapangalan mga booking sa hotel which is kasama ko naman sya sa room.. we’ve been travelling together for years around the country and ASIA, mas maganda rin ba if I include our pictures travelling together as additional requiremetns to prove that we really travel together?

Mitch

Hi, just want to ask do we need to paste the picture on the application? And where to write the middle name of my husband? Or we don’t need to include that in the application. There’ s no area for middle name. Only surname at birth where I wrote my maiden name because it’s different from my present surname. But in mens case surname at birth and present are the same. Thank you very much.

Yes, you need to paste the pic on the form.

I’m not sure I understand your question about middle name. But in general, if there’s no space for it, if the form is not asking for it, you don’t need to provide it.

Carlos

hello sir, we are planning to apply for schengen visa via german embassy this august, our entry point and exit point is germany, and we are planning to visit other schengen member states, what will be the visa that are we going to apply, single or multiple? cause im a little bit confused sir. thank you very much.

Hi Carlos, if you’re not leaving the Schengen Zone, single entry only. Could you share with me all the countries you plan to visit so I could check?

TINE

Hello Yoshke. My boss will be travelling with our client as a group. Should we get different appointments or I can schedule one appointment and submit their documents together? Thank you!

Cara

Appointments are individual even if travelling as a group.

Hi TINE, naku wala akong idea kapag group applications. :(

blessie

hi, I want to ask if my mom needed to have a bank accounts, itinerary, and insurance or provided na un ng boyfriend nia which is a german residence or yung mom ko ang mag pro-provide ng lahat? kasi shes not working and she dont have ny bank accounts. thanks in advance..

Hi Blessie, ang alam ko need pa rin talaga ng mga yun kahit na sponsored.

Anne

Hi Yoshke! I’m planning of using my joint account with my Dad for the Bank certificate and Statement of account to show financial coverage of the cost of my travel and stay. Do you think it’s okay to use joint account SOA and Bank Cert? or should I make an authorization letter para sure? ako lang kasi yung may balak magtravel sa Europe… Thank you.

Hi Anne, I used my joint account with my mom when I applied. It was approved. I’m not sure if they really accept it or I just got lucky. If it’s not okay, they may have given me a pass because of my travel history.

John

Hello! I’ll be a fresh grad pa lang from college by the time I apply so I won’t be having any work yet and my parents will be supporting and paying for the trip. Can I submit their ITRs and Land Titles and just indicate that in my letter?

Hi John, what’s your purpose of traveling to Germany? And who are you traveling with?

Hi Yoshke! Another question… I should bring all original and as well as photocopied copies of my travel documents, right? And original copies ba dapat yung ibigay ko sa Consul on my appointment date or pwedeng photocopies lang? Like yung ITR, okay lang ba kahit photocopy lang ibigay ko sa Consul or dapat original? Thank you.

Hi Anne, in our case, kinuha original ng ITR, COE, and bank documents.

Yung land titles (and work contract), yun lang ung photocopy lang pero chineck nila ung original.

Thank you so much Yoshke! Pasensya na sa madaming question… one more question pala, when you signed the Declaration Form and as well as the Completed Application Form, what did you wrote sa place/date? Should I write Manila for the place? Thank you.

Hi Anne, yep! We wrote the specific city (e.g. Mandaluyong or QC or Makati)

Hi Yoshke! I’ve had my interview last July 18, 2018 and came back on the 19th for the additional documents which they have requested. Medyo kabado lang ako kasi wala pa passport and have been trying to track it but 2GO’s website says na invalid daw yung tracking number. Ganun ba talaga yun na invalid kapag ine-eenter ko sa 2go website? And how long does it usually take them to process? Thanks.

Hi Anne! We had the same situation. I had my interview last July 17 naman but only completed my requirements on the 20th. Then today ko nakuha yung passport, which is Aug. 1 so mga..7 working days sya in total. Chineck ko yung status nya online pero, weirdly enough, invalid pa rin sya. :/

I read na you may email their customer service and provide in the body of your email yung tracking number na binigay sayo and then yung passport number mo since di raw naguupdate agad yung system ng 2go.

Hi Arianne! Woow! Congratulations! I actually haven’t called my sister to check if may na-receive na sila from 2Go kasi nagre-rely lang talaga ako sa Tracking Number na binigay nila. Kaya lang almost everyday na yata ako nagta-track and tumatawag sa call center nila, it always appears as Invalid. I just really wonder why it’s invalid when it was given by German Embassy naman. Siguro nga it would be better to email them. Thank you Arianne! I’m really hoping and praying for positive results.

Hi Anne, yeah, I remember having the same problem with 2Go. Always invalid tracking number.

Hi Yoshke! Medyo worried lang ako dahil July 19th yung date when I submitted the additional documents and 11th working day na today. Do you think I should call them or send them an email to check why the tracking number they gave me appear as invalid? or should I wait a little more? Thank you.

Hi Anne, sa experience namin, laging invalid yung tracking number. hehe.

Sa akin, ang 11 working days ay normal pa, kasi yung kay Vins, 3 weeks bago nabigay (15 working days). I would still wait a few more days. But go give them a call if it really makes you uneasy.

salama quirino

hi hello..ask ko lng po.my interview on german embassy s monday..nag aalala lng ako.tungkol s bank of statement..wla nmn akong bank acct..ang magbbyad lht skin ung sponsor ko n asawa ng pinsan ko..ano p b ang need ko n requirements n manggagaling s knla..tsk magkno po b ang bayad s embassy??thank you po s pag sagot.

Hi Salama. Hmmmm, as far as I know, mag-aask pa rin sila about your own bank account and financial situation, even if may sponsor ka.

Patricia

Good Day Yoshke! I’m planning on visiting Germany soon and my friend from Germany will be the one who’ll sponsor me. My question are 1) Do I still need to submit a hotel reservation even if I’m going to stay at my friends house or what alternative should I submit? 2) In proof of relationship with sponsor can I just submit screen shots of our conversation through facebook, skype and whatsapp? 3)On the proof of financial capacity will I only be submitting the bank statement and formal obligation from my sponsor? or do I still need to submit my bank statement and other proof of income? but I have problem with that since I don’t have bank account. I hope you can help me. Thank you.

Hi Patricia,

1) Do I still need to submit a hotel reservation even if I’m going to stay at my friends house or what alternative should I submit? —– No need. The documents needed when visiting a friend are listed in the post above.

2) In proof of relationship with sponsor can I just submit screen shots of our conversation through facebook, skype and whatsapp? —– Yes, you can submit those. But I think you’ll have a stronger case if you have photos together.

3) On the proof of financial capacity will I only be submitting the bank statement and formal obligation from my sponsor? or do I still need to submit my bank statement and other proof of income? —– “Or” yung nakalagay sa checklist so I guess hindi na.

Thank you so much.. :)

Rei

I’ve been trying to complete the VIDEX online form but it seems like its taking forever to continue. I tried saving it but the same thing happened. Naka hang lang ung system. Does it really happen? For the others I made, hindi naman ganyan. I’m worried tuloy.

Hi Rei, didn’t happen to any of us on the team.

AIVIE GONZALVO

Hi, quick question, I’m currently working po sa Vietnam. I have workpermit but no residence card. makakapag apply po kaya ako dto sa embassy ng germany?

Hi Aivie, I have no idea. Di ko kasi alam ang rules ng embassy dyan sa Vietnam. Iba-iba kasi ang rules per country.

Tin CCiba

Im currently drafting my cover letter, shall I include the reason why i cant provide an ITR o I make a separate letter for that? TIA:)

Hi Caryn, pwedeng maging problem pa rin sya kasi you need to prove YOUR OWN financial capability and rootedness kahit na may sponsor ka.

E

Can the cover letter exceed 1 page kaya? I’ll be travelling with my boyfriend. I’m planning kasi to write a detailed letter which includes an explanation about a discrepancy on my surname, why we chose the spots that we chose to visit, etc. We’ll be going to France and stay the longest in Provence. Baka kasi magtaka bakit di kami sa more famous spots pumunta.

Thank you :)

As much as possible, 1 page lang. You can explain why you want to visit the spots in your itinerary but go straight to the point and be brief.

Thanks again, Yoshke! This is very helpful. :)

cRuZeTTe

Hi Yoshke! Thank you for this detailed information and instructions. I always refer to your website on travel information. I have one question lang regarding the “validity” of the Schengen visa. When you said you were granted a 60-day visa with your 53-day itinerary, were you referring to the approved “length of stay”? Like with the Japan visa wherein the visa validity is 3 months but the approved length of stay is 15 days. The reason why I am asking is because we are planning to visit Germany around May 20th next year and to stay for 15 days. Is February or March too early to apply if, say visa is released after 7 working days? Thank you!

Yes, I’m referring to length of stay allowed.

Yep, Feb or March are okay. Tama lang. The validity of the visa will depend on the travel dates (itinerary) you submitted. :)

Mhy

Sir pano po yun my bf will support my trip, any needed docs to provide or pwede I submit na xa magsupport sakin. Thanks po

hi Mhy! Pa-check na lang po sa taas. Nakalista po dun under C. YOUR TRAVEL PLAN, IF VISITING FAMILY OR FRIENDS.

Pero pag boyfriend yung sponsor, malaki ang chance na magiging strict sila sayo.

K-anne

Is this considered single entry if my travel routes are Berlin -Munich – Salzburg -Prague -Berlin?

Yep! Single pa rin kasi hindi ka lumabas ng Schengen Zone. :)

Monica

Hi Yoshke, I noticed no one has asked about cruises. What kind of reservation proof can I give without shelling out the full cost of the cruise ? Once you book, you pay. Sayang naman ang payment if my visa isn’t approved! Also, what kind of visa do I need? Single entry? Countries in the cruise are: germany, poland ,lithuania, latvia ,estonia, st. petersburg russia, finland, sweden, denmark and back to germany. The only country not included in the Schengen area is Russia though this is only a 2day stay and covered with the 72-hour no- visa visit to Russia. Our entry/exit is Berlin, Germany. Thanks!

Hi Monica, naku, wala akong idea pag cruise. But some of the members of our support group might have. You may post your question here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/thepoortraveler/

tin

mandatory po ba ang travel insurance?

Jay

Is the list of required documents for the application of Schengen Visa complete/updated in this link that you shared?

https://www.thepoortraveler.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/German-Embassy-Tourist-Visa-Checklist.pdf

A friend of mine applied last July 2018 but was not required to submit a flight reservation but was only asked for his itinerary. Although, he was sponsored by his cousins in Germany, is there a difference when submitting the requirements between a sponsored traveller and a “tourist without sponsor”??

Thanks in advance for your response! :)

Hi Jay, in our experience, when we applied as tourists on two different occasions, we were required to submit a flight reservation.

I’m not sure about when applying to visit someone. The checklist for a visit visa indicates “No flight RESERVATION needed.” But for tourists, it reads “No flight TICKET needed.” So I guess there’s a difference. What I’m sure of is, if applying as a tourist, flight reservation is a requirement, based on experience.

Thanks for your reply, Yoshke!

What month did you go to Paris/Amsterdam? Did it rain during your stay?

We’re still preparing our documents for the upcoming interview in 2 weeks time. :)

Hi Jay, Paris = September. It didn’t rain at all but it was a bit cloudy and gloomy.

Amsterdam = October. Weather was great. No rain during our visit. There were sunshiny days too. :)

Christian

Lovely guide. Just one question, what if I have two bank accounts? Could I submit more than one bank statement?

Hi Christian, yes, you can. :)

J

Can one include submitting a Statement of Account for shares of stocks of different companies bought thru an online stock broker, e.g., COL? Thanks.

Hi J, yes, I think that’s accepted.

Wandering_gitana

Hello, how important is work in applying for schengen? Im planning to get a new job in a different company but i want to travel this year as well. So in case i submit a coe, it will say na ive only been an employee for a few months and not years. Btw, i was already granted before a greek schengen visa.

Hi! Very important. It’s one of the things they look into.

This won’t be your first company right? You’re just moving from one to another? You can just include a cover letter to explain that you’re new to the company but you have a longer employment history + travel history. I’ve done that before but via French Embassy. I was only 1 month with my new company when I applied, but I explained everything in a letter.

Hello, This wont be my first company. Just transferring to another one. Is the german embassy strict?

A little bit. But since it won’t be your first Schengen visa and bumalik ka naman, nagmamatter naman yun.

Would you mind sharing the letter you submitter to the embassy?

Naku, I don’t have it na. I tried looking for it sa files ko pero di ko makita. Baka nadelete ko na.

Hi Sir Yoshke! I just wanted to ask if the ITR is required to be stamp? I complete the whole last year from my employer.

Hi Den, if I remember correctly, when I applied, my ITR didn’t have BIR stamp.

Are you an employee or self-employed? Di ko sure, pero I think pag Employee okay lang na wala basta may signature ng HR people nyo. Pag self-employed, kailangan meron.

I’m an employee. Thank you for the info!

Rachelyn

Hi I applied schengen visa last February and it was denied the reason is my rootedness in the Philippines, which is I cannot give my COE as my nature work now is in the academe so my COE is per term what is the alternative documents I can show that I am employed ?

How long have you been employed? Did the COE that you submitted state how long you have been with them?

If I were in your shoes, I would write a letter explaining that although your contract ends and renews every term, you have been with your employer/school/university for X years. Aside from that, attach other proof of rootedness like properties, ITR, or investments.

It doesn’t guarantee anything, but it will help build your case.

Nicky

Hi, as to the submission of invalid/expired passport in addition to new passport do I need to submit the original of my expired passport or a photocopy will suffice. Thanks

Hi Nicky, in our experience (we applied 3x now), they took both the original and photocopy of the expired passport too. :)

Hi Sir Yoshke!

Even the expired passport don’t have any stamps?

Hi Den, ay di ko alam if kunin pa rin nila ung old passport pag walang stamp. Basta yung sa amin, kinuha nila.

meenakshi

HI Yoshke Dimen my self meenakshi from india, my real younger sister is german citizen, unfortunetly Her husband expired in october 2017,she is not working anywhere, she is on german government AID presently,. she is so depressed there feeling lonely, i m residing in india i want to meet her to support her. She send me invitation letter, can i go to germany to meet her with my family. i a m financially sound here, all the expenditure comes on our journey and stay at her place will be bear by me. can german embassy refuse me to go her place

Hi Meenakshi, unfortunately, I have no idea about the requirements and processes for Indian nationals, as my experience is limited to applications in the Philippines. Sorry. Hope you find the answers.

AJ

AJ here again. The Japan trip with my brother is finally done (wee! thanks for the insights on that one)

Now moving forward.. This time, applying for my Schengen VISA.

My mom will be attending a convention in Hamburg this coming June. She’s planning to take me with her as my dad wants to give away his slot for me (in terms of escorting my mom on her trip *dad got senior problems already aka slow walking phase) both of them won’t have any problem in applying for the VISA as they are frequent travellers.

My only concern is my part. As I am not registered to join the convention and my mom will sponsor my expense. I have my own bank statement and I work in the family business. Thus, most of my documents will be provided by my mom’s company.

Is there anything I would need to prepare just in case so I could secure them before we set our application altogether? (Land Title & Car registered under my name, anything else?)

And would you recommend us to select the same appointment date? Or does the embassy require an individual appointment of application?

Many thanks for all the tips in advance!

Hi AJ, best to book the same appointment date. Your application will still be assessed individually but it helps that they see whom you’re traveling with.

My only addition is to write a letter explaining your situation — that you’ll be accompanying your mom to a conference.

Note though that there have been some changes to the German process since February and we have yet to research on the new system, so what I know now might not be applicable.

ashley

good pm! sir what if the ang pupuntahan mo is iceland, germany, amsterdam, paris and italy at lahat air flight iyong way mo? lumabas kapaba sa schengen zone nun? single traveller kasi.

You need a double/multiple entry visa for that.

Dawn Rodriguez

good day sir… i am going to apply for schengen visa together with my husband and son.. question is sa akin lang po kasi nakapangalan ang business namin wla name si husband ko pero sya ang kasama ko sa pagooperate. ako lang po ang meron itr and bank account.. sa part po ng husband ko deed of sale of land lang ang meron sya.. ano po need namin isubmit para mapprove na ako po ang sasagot ng lahat expenses namin? or ung bank acct ko ang gagamitin namin sa trip na ito.. and may chance po ba sya maapprove base sa case nia? Salamat po. GOD BLESS

Hi Dawn, di ko pa kasi naranasan na mag-apply with spouse so di ko po alam for sure. :(

Elloisa

Hi! Have you tried applying in VFS Global Cebu? Do you think mas matagal yung process there kesa dito sa Manila?

Cabbie

What is the possibility if you are an unemployed housewife who will accompany your husband on a business trip? Thanks

Steph

Regarding the document checklist, is it ok to submit other items not indicated in the list? For example, previous passports with stamps/visas? Would they require original documents or photocopy is fine? My passport was just renewed this year so it’s still empty, I’m worried the German embassy might think I’m a new traveler.

Hi Steph, you can submit your previous passports and photocopy of past visas/stamps. I submitted mine. :)

RZ

Will they bring back the previous passport submitted? Or a photocopy of it will suffice? Kasi my problem if I give my previous passport is andun yung ibang multiple visas ko and they might not give it back.

Hi RZ, they will give back all passports.

I was laid off last January from my previous company and stayed with them for 3years and 3 mos. I only got employed again last May 8. Do you think I’ll have low chances of being granted with a visa since I won’t be able to provide a complete 6 months payslip from one company and I’m still on probationary period? I was granted with the Schengen visa last year and applied at the same embassy, German.

Hi Anne, I’m afraid I do not know the answer to your question. :(

But you should have a bit of an edge if you’ve been granted a Schengen visa before.

Mikee

Thank you so much for this very detailed blog. May I please ask regarding the travel insurance? Do we need to purchase it right away before applying right? What’s the safest duration sa travel days? Would 15 be okay?

Hi Mikee, yep, you need to purchase it before applying.

What do you mean safest duration? It should cover your full travel dates.

Finn

Hi Yosh, thank you for this guide it’s super helpful :)

Would like to ask if you have experience with booking group or family travel insurance for the Schengen visa requirement? Or is it really required to have individual insurance? Upon checking the providers, group/family insurances are cheaper.

I’ve never tried booking group insurance. :(

Also, we have yet to update this post. They now course visa services through VFS.

Teresa

Hi Yosh, did you staple your documents? Is this allowed? Checked all websites and there’s nothing specific indicated. Thank you!

Hi teresa, we didn’t staple our documents. :)

Not sure if allowed yung pag-staple though.

Mark

Hi, Yosh –

What if part of the trip will be hosted by a friend? Would I still be needing invitation for that?

THanks, Mark

RTravel

Hi, for immigration requirements, inaaccept po ba nila ang formal obligation in replacement of Affidavit of Support and Guarantee Letter from Consulate? Kc parang same lang ung document although sa list ng Immigration requirements, specific ung affidavit. Thanks po at sana ay makita nyo po tong comment ko. :)

Applying for a Germany Schengen Visa from the Philippines

If you are a citizen of the Philippines and you are planning on going to Germany, you will need to apply for a visa to be able to enter and stay in the country.

The Embassy of Germany in Manila processes visa applications, but the receipt of applications has been outsourced to VFS Global in Manila or Cebu. That means you will submit your application to VFS Global.

You can apply up to 6 months before your trip, but the earlier the better! It takes around 1 week for your application to be processed by the embassy from the moment they receive your paperwork. It is not possible to have your application rushed through, so make sure you apply in plenty of time.

Types of Schengen visas offered at the German Embassy in the Philippines

The type of visa you will apply for will depend on why you wish to go to Germany. There are 3 types of visa available:

  • Schengen visa (short-stay) – for a holiday or business trip etc for up to 90 days
  • National visa (long-stay) – to attend university, work or join a family in Germany etc for over 90 days

If you are simply catching a connecting flight on the way to a different destination, you will need an  Airport Transit visa.

Flight reservation without payment

The next step is to book your appointment.

Making appointments with the embassy, consulate or visa application centre is generally free and can be done yourself. However, if you are running short of time or not sure which consulate to apply to or have no idea on how to get this done yourself then not to worry, we will make the appointment for you for a small service fee!

Booking a visa appointment using our services is pretty simple! All you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

  • Visit the link to schedule the visa appointment
  • Submit the appointment details, the visa you are applying for, consulate you need the appointment for, the country you need the appointment IN and make the payment
  • Receive appointment confirmation in email

Book Visa Appointment

You can also make an appointment on your own by following the steps below.

  • Go to VFS Global’s website and click on the link under “Step 3 – Book an appointment”
  • Click on: “Let’s get started”
  • Click on: “I don’t have an account” to create a new account
  • Sign in and book a suitable date and time for your appointment
  • Receive an email with confirmation of your appointment

Once you have made your application, you will need to pay your visa application fee. If you are applying online for your visa, your payment will be made as part of this process. Alternatively, payment can be made at the time of your appointment at VFS Global. However, it’s more convenient to pay online through the payment gateway for Germany when booking an appointment.

Once payment has been made, an appointment letter will be sent to your email address along with the receipt as proof of payment.

Please note, fees are non-refundable if an applicant does not show up on his appointment date or if the visa application is denied. You will pay the fee in cash in Philippine Pesos.

On the day of your appointment:

  • Aim to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment.
  • You must attend the appointment for your visa application. You cannot send someone in your place
  • Take a printed copy of your visa application, as well as a valid passport or travel document with at least 2 pages that are blank on both sides
  • Bring all supporting documentation (originals and copies)
  • If you haven’t paid your visa fee online, you can pay your fees once you get to the centre

At the center, you will also need to submit your fingerprints and photograph. This is known as biometric information collection. Without biometrics information, your visa application will not be processed.

If you miss your appointment on the scheduled day, you will need to book a new appointment after 24 hours from your original appointment date.

After your appointment, your application will be sent to the embassy for processing. They may ask you to attend an interview to clarify the information you have provided. They ask you questions to do this. If this happens, don’t worry, simply answer the questions honestly.

Typical questions include:

  • Have you been to Germany before?
  • What do you plan to do there?
  • Are you going with anyone else?
  • How much do you earn?

Don’t jeopardize your Schengen visa interview at the last minute. Use this comprehensive and thorough visa interview guide to crack the visa interview!

Visa Interview Guide

After you have submitted your application, you will receive an email when a decision has been made or you can purchase the SMS service from VFS Global. You can also track your application’s progress with the tracking tool.  Click on the link under “Step 6 – Track your application”:

Once your passport has been returned to VFS Global, you can pick up your passport in person or have your documents returned to you by courier for an additional fee. If you choose to collect your passport, you must take the following documents:

  • Receipt issued by VFS Global

The decision will be either:

  • Approved – your visa will be inside your passport
  • Rejected – this would have been for a specific reason and you may be able to appeal the decision. See the embassy’s website for more information

Common rejection reasons include:

  • You already have a valid Schengen visa – if you have applied for a Schengen visa previously and it was approved, it may still be valid, so check your passport before you apply for a new one
  • Purpose of your trip is not clear – you must have a valid reason for traveling to Germany. This could be tourism or business etc., but whatever it is, you must show proof of that reason, for example, a tour itinerary or an invitation to attend a meeting
  • No evidence of your intention to return to the Philippines – you must show that you are planning to return home before the expiry of the visa such as proof that you own a home or have a job

First things first. When I met my ex-boyfriend, now my husband, a citizen of Germany, my life became more complicated! I know, right? Get this, present that, you need this, prepare that. Haha. Kidding aside, all the struggles and challenges were worth it.

If you’re moving to Germany to join your German/Filipino husband, a friend, or a relative who plans to invite or visit someone in Germany, here are the things you should pay attention to and prepare carefully. In other words, they are crucial ingredients to plan your move abroad smoothly.

What are these?

  • CFO ( seminar & sticker)
  • A1 Certificate ( less than one-year-old according to the  German Embassy Manila)
  • Flight ticket
  • Health Insurance
  • College/ University Diploma
  • Your visa, of course!
  • Valid passport

How to get CFO certificate and sticker

FOR SPOUSE MOVING TO GERMANY TO JOIN THEIR OTHER HALF

CFO, also known as Commission on Filipino Overseas, is one of the most important things you must acquire. You cannot leave the country without it, even if you already have your Spouse’s visa. Yep. You read that right. Therefore, you must have one stamp on your passport. This is one of your priorities on your moving to Germany checklist.

Based on experience, the entire process was nearly the same when I got the CFO certificate and sticker in 2019. I registered online, got an appointment, uploaded all the necessary documents, and physically attended the office seminar. The thing is, it could be a hassle if you’re living in the province. The good news is there’s a “ new normal,” which means getting a CFO certificate and sticker is now done online. How convenient!

Simple. Just go to CFO’s official website, and you will be directed exactly what to do. But to give you a quick view of how it looks like receiving your CFO sticker in the Philippines, see the step-by-step below.

But don’t get too confident yet; my dear friend Kate, who recently moved to Germany, said she had difficulty getting an appointment for the CFO. Moreover, it was expensive. Regardless, here are simple steps to follow.

Step by step on how to get a CFO certificate and sticker

  • Create an account
  • Fill out your relevant information, Spouse’s information, and birth date, among others.
  • After completing and filling in your information, you will be asked to send the digital copies of registration to the assigned CFO Tele counselor before the Tele counseling happens.
  • After the Tele counseling, you will receive another email to proceed with the registration.
  • You will fill up the CFO registration form, including your delivery address and contact number, to deliver your CFO sticker.
  • Pay, of course! Php 400.00 ( you can always double-check with CFO)
  • After your payment in any Bayad center, you must send a copy of your Bayad center receipt and other additional requirements to  [email protected].
  • Soon you will receive an electronic copy of the temporary Certificate.
  • Later, when the original documents are ready, you will receive an email for confirmation and send it to your address. Source: CFO’s official website
  • Clear copy of valid passport; 2. Clear copy of valid visa; 3. petitioner’s passport (this is your Spouse’s) 4. Marriage certificate and Report of Marriage (ROM) in Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) security paper. (if married).

Sounds pretty easy, right? Just follow the instructions, and you will be fine. If you have further inquiries, don’t hesitate to contact them directly via email or check their official website for any updated information.

Note that CFO may request additional requirements from you depending upon their case. For example, annulment/divorce paper, proof of relationship (with the Spouse), etc.

Filipino Traveling to Germany -a checklist you cannot overlook

A1 German Certificate for moving to Germany

The A1 Certificate is probably one of the most common items often heard. I am an excellent example of this journey. When I applied for my Spouse’s visa, the A1 Certificate and the exam were mandatory.

If you have already acquired one, well, that’s very nice! Otherwise, you need to get one. But note that Filipinos traveling to Germany to visit a family, relative, or tourist don’t necessarily need to take one.

For more information about the A1 German exam and Certificate , I’ve written a comprehensive guide for your reference. You are welcome, indeed.

Valid (Return)Flight ticket to Germany

FOR SPOUSE MOVING TO GERMANY TO JOIN THEIR OTHER HALF AND TOURISTS

I must include this traveling to Germany checklist because sometimes I get a lot of questions about the flight ticket. In general, having a round-trip ticket in your hand, regardless of any country you travel to, is a must upon traveling out of the Philippines.

I have been in and out of the country plenty of times before, and I can tell you that a return flight is your guarantee not to get offloaded, even if to a neighboring country like Thailand, Hongkong, or Laos .

At the immigration, you must already have had your documents, including your flight ticket, to show to the immigration officer.

But there’s an exception of a return flight ticket to Germany, to be specific. For example, in my case, when I had my Spouse’s visa to Germany , my husband and I only booked a one-way ticket.

Well, because obviously, you’ll live and settle in Germany with your Spouse, a return flight to the Philippines isn’t necessary anymore. Unless you plan to go back soon. And luckily, the immigration officer didn’t ask a single thing about my journey. I just handed him my passport and flight ticket.

FOR TOURISTS

When I applied for a tourist/visitor visa to Germany, I had to have one but not the confirmed flight ticket, only a screenshot. In other words, when applying, a flight ticket was not necessary. However, when your visa gets approved, you definitely need one like my mother and sister, who visited me in Germany in April 2022. They secured a round trip ticket, booked and paid, and presented it at the immigration.

Filipino Traveling to Germany Checklist – At the Philippines’ immigration

My experience, I constantly have had my fair share of heart-pumping experiences at our dear Philippines’ immigration. In my opinion, here in this specific area of the Philippines government has a remarkable ability to make every traveller shake on their knees. As a solo traveller, I was questioned once before when flying to Kuala Lumpur and Bali. I was sent to another officer and got questioned.

As a result, I almost missed my flight. Glad they let me go eventually!

Some Philippine immigration officers can be a bit unfriendly towards you. Others could be intimidating, while some are very friendly and accommodating. All characters are perched there.

I don’t know the answer to this question. It could just be that immigration officers are only doing their job. Some travelers had said probably they’re in a bad mood. Who knows?

But there are ways to combat and prepare for the Philippines’ immigration bone-crackling interrogation.

Tourist/Visitor Visa to Germany from the Philippines

If you travel to Germany as a tourist, a visitor, or a relative. Get ready to;

  • Have your valid passport ready
  • Your valid return flight ticket
  • Travel insurance. You must have bought one for yourself already. Here’s the required or recommended health insurance from the embassy.
  • Travel declaration form. You can download this form here. Yes, things have changed due to the pandemic.
  • Yellow card or the international vaccine passport-this is mandatory as Germany only accepts this as standard vaccine proof. If not, you must get one; otherwise, you’re considered unvaccinated. I am still in the middle of writing about this in one article. Meanwhile, you can check the website.
  • All the documents you presented while applying for your visa at the German embassy or VFS. All of them.

For Spouse Visa, Au-Pair, or Tourists

Like myself holding a Spouse visa as a Filipino travelling and moving to Germany during that time (2019), some of my checklists included;

  • Valid Passport
  • CFO sticker and Certificate
  • A one-way ticket to Germany (for Spouse)
  • A round-trip ticket (for Tourists)
  • Health/Travel insurance. The health/travel insurance is from my husband’s same company. He had already registered me and got me one. You can ask your Spouse to do the same. That would be no problem at all.

* Note: For any traveler, or Filipino traveling to Germany, besides a Filipino holding a spouse visa, no one is exempted from providing the following at the Philippines’ immigration.

  • Airport fee – 1,620php . Don’t forget the receipt!
  • International Vaccine certificate/passport
  • Old and new passports. Trust me; you need this.
  • Some documents you submitted upon getting your visa.

International certification of vaccination BOQ

Relax, be honest, and present your documents if needed. Be confident but not too boastful. Some immigration officers may intimidate you and make you nervous, especially during this pandemic and you’re leaving the country. Just smile and tell the truth, and know where to stand.

If you have been asked to be interrogated in any worst case, don’t worry. Know your rights. Most significantly, don’t lie. Finally, if you got offloaded, like a few Filipinostravellingg to Germany or another country, get the immigration officer’s name and badge number. Then you know what to do next.

You got this. Good luck!

Filipino Traveling to Germany Checklist – what else is there to prepare?

Glad you asked! The truth is, there are more things to prepare than you could imagine. This includes, well, your luggage or your baggage. Yes, the life you’re bringing with you upon moving to Germany has already been on your checklist.

AIRPORT TERMINAL FEE

If you’re visiting Germany only as a tourist, you must pay the Php1,620 travel fee. Moreover, if you hold a residence permit in Germany, you still need to pay the travel tax. I thought I was exempted, but I was wrong. I recently got back from the Philippines, in July 2022 to be exact and the officer at the travel tax counter at the Philippines’ airport charged me the amount. It was a deep regret that I didn’t ask the reason why. But you can, and it’s your right to do so.

You can also pay for this online to avoid the queue at the airport. However, if you’re holding a spouse visa and leaving the Philippines for the first time, there’s no need to pay. I didn’t- that was November 2019.

LUGGAGE/BAGGAGE LIMIT

In general, as far as I know, airlines allow one hand-carry 7kg and 30kg for check-in. For Singapore Airlines, which I flew on, these were the restrictions. However, I must say I carried too much of my load. Luckily, the SG staff at the airport was very nice and friendly; hence, she didn’t penalize me.

While at Emirates, I had over 3kg more on my hand-carry luggage, and luckily, the airline staff did not charge me. My checked-in luggage was 30kg. So a total of 37kg. That should be the limit unless, otherwise, you paid extra.

Nevertheless, it’s best to check with your airlines and not go off the limits.

Stop-lay-over-transit through Dubai or other countries

Depending on your destination for a lay or stopover, it is best to prepare for any mandatory requirements during the pandemic. A negative RT-PCR test must be taken at least 72 hours prior. Also, your yellow vaccine passport must be ready in your hand.

I know this is costly, but better to be safe than sorry. Right?

Based on my experience in July 2022, upon returning to Germany, I did not need to present a negative Rt-PCR test at Dubai airport for my four-hour stopover. It’s best to remember that during the stop/layover, you are only allowed to stay inside the airport unless you have a valid visa to that particular country.

Other Important documents to bring with you when moving to Germany

COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY DIPLOMA

I hope you do not forget this. This is significant in applying for a job once settled in Germany. However, if you’re only a tourist, there’s no need to take this with you as this may signify that you’re settling in Germany illegally. Don’t make this mistake.

Leave them at home!

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE AND OTHER CERTIFICATES

Birth certificates and birth certificates are among the documents you must also not overlook to take with you. Thank me later. Inevitably, this is when you’re a Spouse of an Au Pair. As a tourist or visitor, well, forget about it. You might be suspicious if you carry them while a tourist.

Congratulations, you made it this far  and completed all the traveling and moving to Germany checklist. How amazing is that!

Upon arrival at the immigration at Munich airport, the immigration officer asked me only a few questions. He was friendly, so it wasn’t that challenging to get straight to why I was in Germany.

Suppose you’re a tourist or visitor fully vaccinated, don’t forget to fill out the digital entry form, as of December 2021, according to the Federal Foreign Office in Germany. Consequently, you are already fully vaccinated; thus, quarantine is unnecessary.

On the other hand, if you’re a Spouse settling in Germany to join your husband, you must be prepared to apply for your residence permit. I got mine three (3) months after I arrived. And until now, I am not yet done writing it. But I will, and come back here anytime for the update.

Philippines, Germany Commit to Reaching Defence Pact This Year

Reuters

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and Philippine Defence Minister Gilberto Teodoro shake hands before their bilateral meeting, in Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines, August 4, 2024. REUTERS/Lisa Marie David

By Karen Lema

MANILA (Reuters) -The Philippines and Germany on Sunday committed to signing a defence cooperation arrangement this year, vowing to uphold international rules-based order in the region as tensions flare over disputed areas of the South China Sea.

China and the Philippines have traded accusations in recent months over clashes in the South China Sea, including charges China intentionally rammed Manila's navy boats, seriously injuring a Filipino sailor. Beijing has disputed this, saying its actions were lawful and professional.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his Philippine counterpart Gilberto Teodoro committed to establishing long-term relations between their armed forces to expand training and bilateral exchanges, explore opportunities to expand bilateral armaments cooperation and engage in joint projects.

The meeting in Manila was the first such visit by a German defence minister, as their countries mark 70 years of diplomatic relations.

China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, including areas claimed as exclusive economic zones by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague said Beijing's claims had no legal basis. China rejects that decision.

"This ruling remains valid, without any exceptions," said Pistorius. "It is our obligation to strengthen the maritime border and we are living up to it."

China's foreign affairs ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Teodoro said the Philippines, seeking to modernise its military to boost external defence, will be "looking to engage Germany as a possible supplier of these capabilities".

"These are in the command and control, anti-access aerial denial, maritime domain, aerial domain and in higher technologically capable equipment," Teodoro told a press conference with Pistorius.

China has expressed concern about the growing ties between NATO members and Asian nations such as Japan, South Korea and the Philippines, as Washington and its partners expand alliances and partnerships, including those that span the globe.

Germany on Friday joined the U.S.-led United Nations Command in South Korea, becoming the 18th nation in a group that helps police the heavily fortified border with North Korea and has committed to defend the South in the event of a war.

Pistorius said that move was evidence of Berlin's strong belief that European security is closely linked to security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Germany's commitments and engagements in the region "are not directed against anybody," Pistorius said in Manila. "Instead, we are focussing on maintaining rules-based order, securing freedom of navigation and protecting trade routes."

The South China Sea is a vital trade route with more than $3 trillion in ship-borne trade passing through it every year.

Teodoro said the Philippines was not provoking China and did not seek war, but reiterated Manila's stance that the only cause of conflict in the waterway "is China's illegal and unilateral attempt to appropriate most if not all of the South China Sea".

Manila reached a provisional arrangement with China for its resupply missions in the South China Sea last month in an attempt to ease tensions and manage differences. The details of the deal have not been made public.
