This qualification reflects the role of skilled operators who use a broad range of travel or tourism skills and sound knowledge of industry operations to coordinate travel or tourism services. They operate independently or with limited guidance from others and use discretion to solve non-routine problems. Many workers have supervisory responsibilities and plan, monitor and evaluate the work of team members.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in many travel and tourism industry sectors and for a diverse range of employers including travel agencies, tour wholesalers, tour operators, inbound tour operators, holiday parks and resorts, tourist attractions, visitor information centres and other tourism businesses.

The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

RPL OR COURSE?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that can be completed in a short time frame. It's based on skills, knowledge and evidence you have already acquired over the years to meet the requirements for the qualification.

Evidence for RPL may include:

  • Proven work experience
  • Life experiences (including voluntary work and leisure pursuits)
  • Previous study (Qualifications, industry training, professional development programs or units)
  • References from qualified persons

RPL can be conducted via online delivery and through workplace training.

If a student fails to demonstrate competency in some units required to gain the qualification, Gap Training is used to gain competency in those units. It can be customised to suit the individual client needs. Up to 4 units of gap training are included in your RPL Fee. Additional fees apply for further gap training units.

3 months enrolment period to complete RPL.

A Course is a process that can be completed in a longer time frame. It’s designed for those who have little or no previous experience in this field of qualification. The course will help train you to achieve the required skills and knowledge needed to gain this qualification.

Course training requires access to a workplace and tools. Please check the student handbook for the list of resources required for each unit of competency. If you require access to a workplace, you will need to inform National Skills prior to enrolment so we can arrange access to a workplace for you.

This Course can be conducted via online delivery and through workplace training.

Units of Competency:

19 units of competency - 7 core units, 12 elective units. 

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):   This qualification is available for partial or full RPL. Your application for RPL must be submitted prior to commencing study.

Requirements: All participants are required to provide identification, preferably with a photo (e.g. driver's licence, firearms licence, passport). You must also bring your Unique Student Identifier (USI). We are unable to generate your certification without this. If you do not have a USI, please create one at https://www.usi.gov.au/students/create-your-usi

There are no pre-requisites for this qualification, however some imported units may have specific pre-requisites. 

Learning Support: If you feel as though you will need some additional learning support to complete this course, please provide details when making your booking. All participants are required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment prior to beginning course.

Apprenticeship and traineeship details

Type: Traineeship

Job summary: This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a broad range of highly-developed technical tourism sales and marketing, operational or tour delivery skills. The qualification allows for multi-skilling or for specialisation in a limited range of skills that specifically relate to either tourism operations or marketing coordination. Work would be undertaken in an office environment where the planning of tourism products and services takes place, in the field where tourism products are delivered or a combination of both. The field includes any destination, local or regional area, tourist precinct, site, attraction or onboard form of transportation. The qualification reflects the role of individuals who use well-developed skills and a broad knowledge base in a wide variety of contexts. They apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They may provide leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others.

Australian Standard Classification of Occupations: TRAVEL AND TOURISM AGENTS

Sub-industry: TRAVEL AGENT

The lodgment of a second training contract where one of the training contracts is full-time will be reviewed by the Department to determine if each of the parties to each training contract can meet their obligations. There must be a clear separation between the training and employment requirements for each training contract and must not be replicated through the one occupation only.

Minimum of 15 hours per week over each 4 week period throughout duration of apprenticeship/traineeship.

  • Casual NOT PERMITTED in Queensland
  • School-based

7.5 hours per week of paid employment . This may be averaged over a 3 month period.

Over the period of a year, the employer must provide at a minimum the equivalent of 375 hours (50 days) of paid employment .

For a school-based trainee to be eligible to complete in this traineeship they must have met the minimum paid employment requirement as outlined below: - 24 month full time nominal completion duration - 100 days minimum (750 hours) Note: Each school-based traineeship has minimum paid employment requirements that are unique to the traineeship. Please refer to each traineeship in QTIS for further information.

Other requirements for school-based: School-based requirements Students not enrolled in years 10, 11 or 12 may be eligible to enter a SAT provided there are exceptional circumstances warranting consideration and all other entry requirements are met, including being of an age where it is legal to undertake paid employment. Before a student not in years 10, 11 or 12 commences a SAT, a business case supporting the arrangements must be provided to and approved by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT). Delivery of training to school-based trainees Limits have been imposed on the amount of institutional training which may be delivered to school-based apprentices, based on the nominal term of a full time training contract. This restriction does not apply to school-based traineeships.

Traineeship Probation/Duration Details: All apprenticeships have a nominal term - this is the timeframe that is on the Traineeship training contract.

Minimum education standard: Nil

Minimum entry age: The Child Employment Act states that the minimum age for apprentices and trainees is 13 years of age, unless otherwise stated.

Entry Requirements: Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who are able to demonstrate tourism and travel industry knowledge, customer service and operational skills. The individual must either: (1) Be formally assessed through a training program or recognition process, against one of the unit clusters (see qualification structure document for more information) OR (2) Have relevant tourism and travel industry employment experience. A job that has involved the application of skills described in one of the unit clusters would be a satisfactory indicator for entry. A determination need not involve a formal process of measuring, evaluating or recording performance against the units of competency. Students not enrolled in years 10, 11 or 12 may be eligible to enter a SAT. As a general rule, only Australian citizens and New Zealand citizens who have entered Australia on a valid passport have unrestricted rights to employment in Australia. Visa holders may engage in apprenticeships or traineeships provided their work rights allows this, based on information and advice provided by the Australian Government .

Supervision requirements Please refer to the Declaration policy , table 15 for the requirements on supervision. Modified supervision arrangements available : NO Employers are required to provide, or arrange to provide the facilities, range of work, supervision and training as detailed in the training plan. Qualified person for traineeships 1. A person who has satisfactorily completed a traineeship in the trainee's calling, and is the holder of a completion certificate issued under an Act, or 2. A person who holds a certificate of recognition issued under an Act, certifying the person has the necessary skills and knowledge in the calling, or 3. A tradesperson in the trainee's calling, as defined under a specific industrial instrument, or 4. A person who holds a relevant qualification in the traineeship calling, or 5. A person individually, or persons collectively, who has/have documented competence (achieved through an RPL or training pathway) or demonstrated competence in all the competencies the employer is required to provide training for under the trainee's training plan (note - cannot be a person or persons currently undertaking the same traineeship) , or 6. A person undertaking a traineeship, at a higher level than the trainee's, whose traineeship incorporates supervisory or coordinating skills and who has documented competence (achieved through an RPL or training pathway) in at least one of the competencies the employer is required to provide to the trainee under the training plan and who is supervised by a person who qualifies under (1), and/or (4) and/or (5). And, where a worker is required to have a licence to practice the calling/occupation, the qualified person holds a current workers licence. Adequate supervision of apprentices and trainees cannot solely be provided from an offsite location by electronic means. Electronic means include, but are not limited to, telephones, radios and webcams. The level of supervision will normally range between direct, general and broad as per the below guidelines: - Direct - Close monitoring of work ensuring understanding and identifying potential risks and/or hazards - General - Occasional monitoring to ensure progress is occurring - Broad - Quality checking of completed tasks. Since 1 January 2010, all private sector employers and employees in Queensland, including apprentices and trainees, have their wages and conditions of employment covered by the Fair Work Act 2009 and modern awards. This legislation is administered by the Commonwealth Government Fair Work Ombudsman's office. https://www.fairwork.gov.au/pay/minimum-wages/apprentice-and-trainee-pay-rates . Apprentices and trainees are considered employees and may receive entitlements the same as other employees such as: annual leave, sick leave, public holidays, superannuation, workers compensation and allowances. Apprentices and trainees must also receive a pay slip to cover full details of the pay for each pay period. Pay slips have to be given to an employee (including apprentices and trainees) within 1 working day of pay day and be either in electronic form or paper hard copy. Parties should make enquiries with the Fair Work Ombudsman on Ph: 13 13 94 or at http://www.fairwork.gov.au to determine the correct industrial instrument and entitlements. When employment is ceasing the employer or the employee (apprentice/trainee) must provide the appropriate notice periods as per the relevant award or registered workplace agreement. A notice period is the length of time that an employer or employee (apprentice/trainee) has to give to end employment. Unfair dismissal is when an employee (apprentice/trainee) is dismissed from their job in a harsh, unjust or unreasonable manner. This qualification was designed by AFTA Education and Training in conjunction with the travel industry in 2012 to fulfill the entry-level requirements for a competent travel consultant. It has since become the national benchmark for ATAS accreditation as it requires 50% of the frontline travel sales staff must hold this qualification for ATAS accreditation. There are:

There are 12 core competency units in this qualification. They are as follows:

SITTIND003 - Source and use the information on the tourism and travel industry                            SITTTVL001 - Access and interpret product information                                                               SITTTVL002 - Provide advice on international destinations                                                              SITTTVL003 - Provide advice on Australian destinations                                                               SITTTVL004 - Sell tourism products or services                                             SITTTVL005 - Prepare customer quotations                                                                 SITTTVL006 - Book tourism products and process documentation                                  SITTTVL007 - Use a computerized reservations or operations system                    SITTTVL009 - Construct international airfares  SITXCCS014 - Provide service to customers SITXCOM007 - Show social and cultural sensitivity SITXWHS005 - Participate in safe work practices

Learners are to select Electives by the rules set out below:

  • 5 elective units, consisting of:
  • 3 units from the list below
  • 2 units from the list below, elsewhere in the SIT Training Package, or any other current Training Package or accredited course.

A total of 17 competency units

The selection of electives must be guided by the job outcome sought, local industry requirements, and the complexity of skills appropriate to the AQF level of this qualification.

Certificate III in Travel has 4 key skill sets embedded into the qualification. It was designed in such a manner to allow for those who have restrictive time to complete it in one go. Also, some learner cohorts do not need to take all units as they have completed elsewhere before or their experience and prior knowledge allow them to choose what they require only. It promotes flexibility through this modular approach.

SIT40122 - Certificate IV in Travel and Tourism (Release 1)

This qualification is suitable for employees in travel & tourism at a supervisory level. It reflects the role of skilled operators who use a broad range of travel or tourism skills and sound knowledge of industry operations to coordinate travel or tourism services. They operate independently or with limited guidance from others and use discretion to solve non-routine problems. Many workers have supervisory responsibilities and plan, monitor, and evaluate the work of team members. It combines travel and general tourism and provides a balance between the two that is much needed in that role. Those of you who opt to enter this qualification directly from other study disciplines may select Cert III in Travel skill sets embedded into its core units.

 Certificate IV in Travel & Tourism has 7 Core units and 12 Elective units. The seven core units are outlined as follows:
