5 Seconds of Summer Continue Embracing ‘the Feeling of Falling Upward’ With Summer 2023 Tour

  • By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

The 5 Seconds of Summer Show , the tenth anniversary celebration that the pop-rock band hosted at the close of 2021, was part career-spanning concert film and part Saturday Night Live skit poking fun at their decade-long evolution. It featured a recreation of the video for one of their earliest releases — 2012’s “Gotta Get Out” — alongside their biggest hits, like “Youngblood” and “She Looks So Perfect,” and a funeral for their faded black skinny jeans. But the one thing that has never changed about 5SOS is their commitment to delivering an unrelenting live show. And this summer, they’re bringing The 5 Seconds of Summer Show on the road.

General sale for the 20-date tour begins Friday, April 14 at 10 a.m. local time via the official 5SOS website .

Alongside the tour announcement , the band has unveiled plans to release The Feeling of Falling Upwards – Live from The Royal Albert Hall on April 14. The live album was recorded alongside a 12-piece string orchestra and a 12-member gospel choir during a special one-night-only concert last year. The performance followed the release of the band’s fifth studio album in twice as many years, 5SOS5 . The band loaded up the setlist for the night with musical indicators of where they are, where they’ve been, and where they’re heading.

The US tour kicks off August 10 in Uncasville, Connecticut before hitting East Coast cities such as Boston, Toronto, Detroit, Bristow, Philadelphia, New York, and more. The run concludes with what will surely be an epic performance at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on September 14. From there, the band will travel to Europe and the UK. That leg of the global tour kicks off on September 23 in Lisbon, Portugal, and wraps up on October 12 in Prague, Czech Republic.

The band will also release a live album The Feeling of Falling Upwards – Live from The Royal Albert Hall digitally on April 14.

Tickets will be available for North American shows starting with a Citi presale on Tuesday, April 11. The general on sale begins Friday, April 14 at 10am Local Time.

Before they were a multi-platinum selling band with an international fanbase of millions, 5 Seconds of Summer was the angst-driven passion project of four teenage boys in Sydney, Australia.

Guitarists Luke Hemmings and Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood, and drummer Ashton Irwin had all been students of the pop punk genre prior to coming together in 2011 – they’d learned about ditching their hometown and the uncertainty of love from Mayday Parade; discovered the art of striking a balance between humor and depth from  Blink-182 , and Green Day gave them a crash course in rebellion. These influences – merged with each member’s own individual creativity – created the distinctive 5SOS sound.

5 Seconds of Summer’s propensity for staying in sync as the project of four musicians with distinct influences and skills is what has allowed them to consistently reconstruct their sound across their four albums. Learning from their work, rather than being anchored by it, Clifford, Hood, Hemmings, and Irwin are on pace for continued evolution.

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) are a four piece Australian pop rock band that formed in Sydney, Australia in 2011.

It draws inspiration from pop, pop rock, and pop punk bands like Green Day, Good Charlotte, Nirvana, and Blink-182, blending styles into something completely new with every album.

5 Seconds of Summer was formed in 2011 in Sydney, Australia, by a group of high school friends. The band consists of Luke Hemming on vocals and rhythm guitar, Michael Clifford on lead guitar, Calum Hood on bass, and Ashton Irwin on drums. After posting cover songs on YouTube, the group garnered attention. Later that year, the band played its first show at a local pub.

5 Seconds of Summer released its first EP, Unplugged, in June 2012 through Capitol Records. Despite minimal promotion, the album reached number three on the iTunes chart in Australia. It also made the Top 20 in New Zealand and Sweden. The band’s second EP, Somewhere New, dropped that December. The video for the first single, “Out of My Limit,” received over 100,000 views in the first day.

With this growing fame and success, the members of 5 Seconds of Summer decided to drop out of high school to pursue music. In February 2013, the band joined the hugely popular group One Direction on its Take Me Home Tour as a supporting act. This catapulted the band into international stardom.

During a break on the One Direction tour, 5 Seconds of Summer returned home to play its first local headlining tour. Tickets sold out within minutes, confirming the group’s rising popularity. In November 2013, the band signed to Capitol Records. The following March, it toured with One Direction once again on the Where We Are Tour.

In July 2014, 5 Seconds of Summer released its first self-titled studio album. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and peaked at number one in 13 countries, and produced chart-topping singles like “She Looks So Perfect,” “Don’t Stop,” “Amnesia,” and “Good Girls.”

Later in 2014, 5 Seconds of Summer released a cover of “What I like About You,” by The Romantics. It was the first single from the band’s upcoming live album, LIVESOS, which dropped that December.

5 Seconds of Summer embarked on its first international headlining tour in May 2015. The Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour took place across Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and North America.

5 Seconds of Summer released its second studio album, Sounds Good Feels Good, in October 2015. The album became its second number one at home and first in the UK. This success was followed up in 2018 with the release of the band’s third studio album, Youngblood. The album produced four singles: “Want You Back,” “Youngblood,” “Valentine,” and “Lie to Me.”

Calm, 5 Seconds of Summer’s fourth studio album, was released in 2020. It was praised by critics for its mature lyrics and sound. Thanks to a shipping error, over 10,000 copies of the album were released early in the U.S. This happy accident caused the album to chart a week before it was supposed to come out. It also earned the band its fourth number-one album in Australia. This made 5 Seconds of Summer the second band in the country’s history to have its first four studio albums debut at number one.

In 2022, 5 Seconds of Summer released its fifth studio album, 5SOS5. The band is currently promoting the album on its Take My Hand World Tour. Catch its shows live now through December.

Live reviews

The Sounds Live Feels Live concert here in Cologne, Germany was the best concert I've ever went to! Also, it was the best day of my life.

I had a standing soundcheck ticket and I went to the venue very early so that I can be close to 5SOS. And guess what? I ACTUALLY WAS IN THE FRONT ROW!

First of all I want to say something to the Soundcheck. If you think about experiencing soundcheck, you imagine a lot of stuff and so did I! I thought it would be just amazing and personal... and it was! But even more amazing than I thought. The feeling you have when you're so close to them and there aren't that many people and you just get to look at them and hear them talking about so many things is just unbelievable!

5SOS said that the questions were all very good. (For example, "What does happiness mean to you?" - they said a lot to this question though.)

IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO GO TO A 5SOS SOUNDCHECK, DO IT! THE MONEY IS WORTH IT, I PROMISE!

As I mentioned before, I was in front row and I can happily say that Í didn't get pushed or anything during the concert.

It was the third time seeing them and definitely the best. It's awesome to see how much they've grown and how far they've come! Their voices sound so much better and they seem to be so much more confident on stage than they used to be in 2014 when I first saw them.

My personal highlight of the concert was to hear Jet Black Heart live because that's my favorite song by 5sos. Especially the lyrics "The blood in my veins is made up of mistakes." mean a lot to me because I made a lot of mistakes in my life but without these mistakes, I wouldn't be the person I am today.

As you might know, there's this worldwide project for SLFL going on where you write down " I Am..." on a poster and say something preferable meaningful (if you want, something that 5sos helped you with.) So I wrote down " I am a girl whose blood in her veins is made up of mistakes" and during the chorus I think Luke read it and when Calum's part came on, Luke was on this kind of 'catwalk' (I don't know how you call that part of the stage haha I'm sorry) and that was where I was standing and yeah so when Calum started singing "The blood in my veins..", Luke was right in front of me and looked at me while singing this part! I'm so happy that I recorded this so everytime I'm sad, I'm just gonna watch the video! Just thinking about it makes me very emotional..

5SOS are so talented, they do not only sing great, they all also play instruments! And believe me, going to one of their concerts is such a great experience with so much fun and a lot of emotions.

Oh my god. Should I say more? It was overwhealming I had such good sits but holy cow, if you think they're all cute, you should see them in person. First of all Luke is JUST LEGS AND HAIR. Ashton HAS SUCH HUGE ARMS LIKE WOW. Calum is just pretty, he can't help it, he's just pretty and his veins when he plays the bass is just the best thing in the world. But I am missing someone, MR Michael Gordon Clifford. Everyone calls him the ugly one, or rat, ALL THE TIME. Well guess what, HE IS THE HOTTEST ONE FROM THE 4 OF THEM. I SWEAR TO GOD MICHAEL IS JUST MADE BY THE HANDS OF JESUS. He is even paler than he looks in the photos and his lips are SO RED, and then he has this amazing Green eyes you want to look at them all day and never sleep again. Anyway, they all seriously know how to rock those instruments. Ashton slams his drums like it's the last time he's ever gonna play. Michael is a master in the guitar, he was literally meant to be with a guitar in his hands. Luke plays amazing and he sings like an angel that fell from heaven and Calum beats the crap out of his bass. Michael was jumping during most of the songs but like jumping while playing the guitar while throwing his long legs at the air while turning in circles, he was just driving himself crazy. I felt the concert was short but when I counted the number of songs they sang it was pretty good actually, 17 songs. THEY SOUND EVEN BETTER LIVE THAN IN THE STUDIO VERSIONS OF THEIR SONGS. It's mind blowing how real they are. No autotune. Nothing. They're just genuine and unique. At the end Ashton threw his drum sticks at the crowd and Michael threw his guitar picks and the towels they used to dry the sweat and a wáter bottle. They thanked us so much and said that they're probably coming to Mexico next year again in a bigger place if posible. And I just can't wait to see them again. They rocked the living crap out of the stage and I couldn't be prouder because you know you're succesfull when you come from the other side of the world at the age of 18 (ash 20) and sold out 2 dates IN MEXICO CITY. I feel like a proud mom. Anyway, all you need to know is that 5 Seconds Of Summer is one of the few actually genuine and talented bands that don't need an extra band to play for them or don't need to fix their voices in their songs, or don't need to have 5 perfumes and 10 albums to be succesfull, they're real. So yeah, I had an amazing time and everyone should know what's like to see 5SOS live. Genuine.

5 Seconds Of Summer/ One Direction, All of the members of 5 Seconds of Summer have so much talent, from the ability to sing, play acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, to the drums. These Australian lads are funny, down to earth, and so in touch with what making and performing music is really about. I love them! They talked about how much they love Canada and some things that stood out for them, but most of all they said their thank yous.. Which really meant something. Luke Hemmings (18) is the lead vocals and lead guitarist. Ashton Irwin (20) drummer and vocals. Calum Hood (18) vocals and bass guitar. Michael Clifford (18) vocals and electric/ acoustic guitar. They are all so talented! They put on an amazing show!

One Direction,

I have been a fan of One Direction for 2 years, everyday of those 2 years wishing to see them in concert. When I finally got the chance to fly from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Toronto to see them play at the Rogers Center.. I was ecstatic! The show kept you on your feet from beginning, to the end. They had all kinds of cool lights and attractions on their stage that kept your eyes totally fixed on them! As well as huge screens to capture the boys up close and so that the stadium could better see them. By far, the biggest and loudest concert I have ever been to.. But absolutely amazing! I would do it again in a heartbeat.

They went from The X Factor, to a stadium tour that sold out the day after the tickets went on sale! These boys have been a huge hit for 4 years! Let's hope for 4 more amazing years.

I reccomend seeing these boys! (5 Seconds Of Summer, One Direction)

They can REALLY sing!! They always let the crowd sing with them in some parts of their songs and it sounds incredible!

I love them so much :)

5 seconds of summer changed my life on 4.25.14. Their shows were so powerful and inspiring to me and I think everybody should know that. For some bands, the way they sound on the radio doesn't sound like it does in concert, live. 5 Seconds Of Summer sound EXACTLY the same live and that's an amazing thing to do. They may not realize it but it's amazing the way they can just sing a couple songs and have millions and millions of fans head over heels for them. When I went to their concert I remember that Ashton just walked around the stage after a couple songs, talked to us about how inspiring we were to them and then pointed to me and I just couldn't stop screaming. After that when he was walking back, he did a cartwheel and I remember how loud it was in there because everybody was so excited. The thing that I want most right now at this point in my life is to go and meet/see them on my birthday 8.24.14, which is also the date they are performing at the MTV Video Music Awards, and if I actually win tickets I will be completely honored to meet Luke, Ashton, Micheal, and Calum. I know it's hard for them to be moving place to place to place but I honestly think they are having the best time anyone can ever have at this point of their lives. If people are wondering if they should see them live in concert then DO IT! THEY ARE AMAZING PLUS Y.O.L.O AND WHY NOT SEE THEM. I hope whoever reads this will be as excited i am right now just thinking about them. With 5 Seconds Of Summer, NEVER assume they are a boy band because their not, their a pop rock band and the best you with ever see perform.

I went to the Sydney show of the Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour 2015, on 20 June 2015.

I arrived at the venue, Allphones Arena around 5pm, I bought merch (tour t-shirt) at one of the many merch stands situated around the outside of the arena. The venue opened around 5:30pm but I waited around outside, talking to people and went in around 6:30pm.

I was there with friends so we got a bite to eat, doors opened at 7:00pm. We entered the arena around 7:15pm and got settled in our AMAZING seats. Music was been played and also the band 'Hey Violet' was being advertised and their music videos were being played.

State Champs, the opening act came on at 7:30pm and completely rocked out with their original songs. Their set finished at 8:00pm.

5 Seconds of Summer came on at 8:30pm. They began with 'End Up Here'. The crowd was pumping and really excited.

The crowd was jamming with 5SOS, the vibe and atmosphere was amazing.

At one point, Harry (Ashton's little brother) was invited onto stage and he completely shredded Michael's guitar, it was sick!

The crowd was at its loudest for their biggest hits; 'She Looks So Perfect', 'Don't Stop', Their cover of Green Day's 'American Idiot' and of course, the tearjerker, 'Amnesia'.

All in all, I had a blast and I'm sure everyone in that arena felt the same. It was one of the best nights of my life.

I would definitely recommend 5 Seconds of Summer in concert. So if you're contemplating whether or not to buy tickets to a show of theirs, stop, don't hesitate and BUY THOSE TICKETS to HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE!!

After the consert i was left with mixed feelings. DON BROCO blew my mind! Before the show i had only ever heard their music on youtube and they reminded me of Lower than Atlantis.(Not that thats a bad thing, i love LTA) But because of the fact that i didnt know what to expect, and that i had never heard of the band before, my expectations were not that high. But at the show i loved it; their energy, wicked sound, the vocals were awesome(one of my friend compared the singers abilities to Hayley Williams`) and overall the band seemed to love what they were doing - unlike a certain headlining band.

As usual the songs were performed to "perfection" and the screaming girls were ecstatic. Still something that everyone of them but Michael G Clifford on lead guitar seemed to be missing, was the energy and joy on stage. Calum just seemed plain sad to the point where my thoughts during the show was;it looks like he needs a hug, should i go up there and hug him(i stood in GC2). Luke seemed tired and i was actually waitng for him to yawn loudly into the mic. Ashton seemed annoyed or mad, and to me and my friends we were just waiting for him to take a bieber and run off stage.

But all in all i loved their sound even though all that came out of luke, calum and ashton seemed rehearsed and robotic, i loved the bigscreen, the songs that were played inbetween the sets and before the shows, and i loved DON BROCO sooooo much. So thanks 5sos for rocking and that was my experience.

The 5 Seconds of Summer Show was nothing but purely magical. I don’t have words to describe it properly. But I’ve never seen an Artist as passionate about anything as those four men on that small Stage that was full of Energy the whole show. They didn’t seem tired from touring many months they just put on the best show they could for you, they surely did without a doubt. You could feel the connection between the Artists and the fans that was unbelievable. That feeling of love and comfort wouldn’t leave the whole time it seriously felt like home. We (the fans) sang every little word back, we danced, smiled, laughed, screamed, cried and had the best time of their life. It made me feel alive it made me feel happy and welcome and I felt like I’m not being judged. I felt free. I could feel that they put everything they had in every single song and you could feel how much it meant to them. It was for sure the best Concert I’ve ever been to. It was a truly beautiful night with a whole bunch of different mix of emotions. I’d definitely recommend for anyone to go to a 5 Seconds of Summer show. No matter if you’re a fan or not, no matter how old you are or if you’d never listen to they’re music before. You won’t regret it. Their music and music genre is something special and out of this world. 5 Seconds of Summer will make sure you have a brilliant time and you’ll definitely enjoy it.

The concert was incredible. I had the VIP Soundcheck Experience so I was one of a couple hundred fans who got the opportunity to be a part of this private "hang out" with 5sos. The band played "If You Don't Know", answered some questions asked by the fans and then ended with their new single "Girls Talk Boys".

For the concert itself, Roy English was the opening act and he was pretty great. When 5sos came on stage, the energy in the arena increased and there was a smile on everyone's face. About two-thirds through the show, Ashton invited everyone to fill in the gaps on the arena floor. He said to jump the barricades if they had to, so the majority of the audience moved closer. The floor section had basically turned into a mosh pit.

After playing "What I Like About You" Luke got a bit annoyed at security for moving fans back to their seats, as the whole point was for everyone to be up front and have the best experience possible.

Usually the band would go off stage for a couple minutes and then come back on for the encore, but because of the situation, this time they were forced to continue on.

I'm sure that they got in trouble for breaking rules, but it was definitely worth it.

They made a large arena feel just as personal as a small venue, and each person at the show had the time of their life.

This was certainly one concert I'll never forget.

Last night was (as Michael would say) F***ING AWESOME!

JESSARAE was an absolutely amazing support act, will definitely be looking out for his headline tour dates. For those of you who don't know who he is, he is Steven R McQueen's (Jeremy in The Vampire Diaries and Steve McQueen's nephew) half brother.

He has such an incredible singing ability and great stage pressence.

His original songs Nobody's Human and Stand In The Rain both had the crowd going.

When 5 Seconds of Summer came on stage, the heat and noise level rose.

The opening song was so moving, which was followed by all their hits as well as favourites from both albums, as well as songs such as Heartache On The Big Screen and Disconnected.

As with all Birmingham concerts, there was many laughs. With Michael challenging Calum to performing one of the songs with a bottle cap, instead of his plectrum.

And Michael coming up with a song invovling the city's name. (Last year they sang a song entitled Birmingham Smells Like Ham) this year the song was I Shaved My Beard For Birmingham, (which was to honour the fact Michael has finally shaved his beard.

These boys are all very talented I love it when Michael and Luke play each others guitars. :)

Can't wait for next year boys. BEST NIGHT EVER! And that Ain't No Lie #AintNoLie #SLFLBirmingham #SoundsLiveFeelsLive

5 Seconds of Summer is a pop-rock (wanna be punk rock) band that consists of Luke Hemmings (guitar, vocals), Michael Clifford (guitar, vocals), Calum Hood (bass, vocals), and Ashton Irwin (drums, vocals). You can expect a very fun show with loads of energy. 5SOS are probably better live than on their album. They always interact with the crowd to make sure the fans are having the time of their lives.

Be prepared to be amazed by these young lads' talents. By the time you leave the concert, you'll have the biggest smile on your face, but you won't be able to hear a thing due to the fact you and everyone else in the venue will be screaming so loud.

I've now seen 5SOS three times in concert and I will be attending two more concerts this year. Every time I see them live, they're even better than before. These cheeky lads will play a catchy tune, like the debut single, "She Looks So Perfect", that just makes you want to dance. Or they'll play a slow song, such as, "Amnesia", that makes your heart flutter because, I mean c'mon, who wouldn't want to see these lovely boys singing about never wanting to ever lose you.

5 Seconds of Summer are trying to bring new music to the world and they're doing an absolutely amazing job at it. They are currently touring with One Direction on their stadium tour.

What will the album sound like?

According to 5SOS guitarist Michael Clifford, the album will be “so f**king good.”

In an interview with  Billboard the boys revealed that the new record is a mix of their old sound with a completely new vibe.

What will the album be about?

Singer Luke Hemmings revealed that a lot of their song inspiration was taken from “specific nightlife.”

“Just paying attention to energies that draw you and inspire you, and I guess that’s why we moved to LA. Like, I wouldn’t be sitting in the middle-of-f**king-nowhere Sydney if I was looking for inspiration. And we were looking for things that inspired us, and they were raw. I think there’s been some specific musical taste shifts in the group, for sure,” he told  Billboard about the new songs.

‘5SOS5’ Album Review: With New Voices and New Sounds, 5 Seconds of Summer redefine their Musical Identity

Album cover for 5 Seconds of Summer's "5SOS5."

Only a handful of musical acts have undergone a sonic transformation as extensive as Aussie quartet 5 Seconds of Summer. The band — made up of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin — was introduced to the music scene as a pop-punk boy band through hits such as 2014’s “She Looks So Perfect.” By 2018, the group had evolved to be unrecognizable, ditching the punk sound and boyband label through their next breakthrough hit, “Youngblood.” With the release of the group’s fifth studio album, the appropriately titled “5SOS5,” 5 Seconds of Summer undergoes a new round of reinvention, bringing a more mature sound and perspective, while breaking the mold of what defines a 5SOS song.

The album’s opener, “COMPLETE MESS,” a mellow reflection on messy relationships, was released as the album’s first single back in March of this year. In the intervening six months, 5SOS engaged fans with a steady stream of teasers, singles, and performances of then-unreleased tracks during the “Take My Hand” World Tour, which took the band across Europe and the Americas from April to July of this year. “BLENDER” became a quick fan favorite after being added to the “Take My Hand” setlist prompting fans to beg for its release, which “5SOS” eventually obliged. On the other hand “Easy For You To Say,” another track teased on tour, was only dropped upon the album’s release — but with odd production decisions and heavy vocal effects used on the chorus, the live performances outshine the recording.

“5SOS5” marks the band's first full-length release since 2020’s “CALM” which included hits “Easier” and “Teeth.” In the two years since, the band has been anything but idle. Irwin, the band’s drummer, became the first member to go solo with his 2020 debut album “Superbloom.” While Hemmings, 5 Seconds of Summer’s lead singer and rhythm guitarist, quickly followed suit with the 2021 release of his album “When Facing the Things We Turn Away From.”

The influence of both projects can be heard within “5SOS5.” Irwin’s exploration of the industrial rock landscape flows into the introspective album closer “TEARS!” While, the idyllic soundscape created for Hemmings’ album is borrowed for the delightfully sappy duet “Older.”

“5SOS5” also departs from 5 Seconds of Summer’s earlier sound by expanding the band’s vocal lineup. On “CALM,” 5SOS was able to shed their boyband image by centering Hemmings as the band’s frontman, providing lead vocals on all but one track on the album. Even with this shifting dynamic, longtime fans will be excited to listen as vocal moments from Clifford, Irwin, and Hood once again find themselves in the spotlight. Fans can also hear a surprise vocal performance on “Older” where Sierra Deaton, Hemmings’ fiance and former member of the X-Factor winning duo Alex & Sierra, sings with Hemmings in a heartwarming duet.

Across the album, 5SOS weaves a thread of nostalgia and reflection, a theme that flows as a natural continuation of “2011,” released last year in celebration of the band’s 10-year anniversary. Two of the best tracks on the album — “Bad Omens” and “Best Friends”— are a natural pairing examining downfalls and the peaks of friendship, respectively. On “Bad Omens” Hemmings laments his tendency to ignore red flags in toxic relationships, singing: “Heaven knows I should let go / It's nothing that I don't already know.” Whereas “Best Friends” presents a joyous and carefree celebration of friendship at its best exclaiming “I got the best friends in this place/ And I'm holdin' on.”

At 19 songs, the album does feel a bit bloated, particularly on the back half where songs like “Redline,” “Moodswings,” and “Flatline” blur together in a haze of falsetto and guitars. Pushing a few songs onto a separate deluxe edition would free up space for some of the better mid-tempo B-sides like “Bleach” and “You Don’t Go to Parties” to set themselves apart rather than getting lost in the mix.

Nevertheless, “5SOS5” is a testament to the growth and musical talent of 5 Seconds of Summer. The album marks the band's first independent release, as well as Clifford’s first go as producer for almost the entire album. While it doesn’t present the same cohesion as “CALM,” “5SOS5” shows off of a mix of surefire hits and experimental feelers, promising further growth and exploration in the band’s future.

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

  • Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!
  • Cost: USD $8.00
  • Food nearby: Moskovskiy Chaynyy Klub is a cozy cafe serving food items and pipping hot tea; it’s the perfect place to go if you’re visiting Moscow during the winter months!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .
