Prologue [ ]

Calypso : My name is Calypso. Exactly one year ago on Christmas Eve, my Twisted Metal contest destroyed the City of Angels. Down below, life has come to a halt, as survivors struggled to stay alive.

Man: Calypso! Calypso, what have you done?! What have you done?!

Calypso: All the city awashed in flames, nothing left to destroy. I face a dilemma: where will this year's Twisted Metal contest take place? Fourteen of the world's best drivers have already been chosen, ready to battle to the death in the hopes of becoming the victor, and to claim whatever prize their brave hearts desire. But where will the contest be held? Ah. The world will be my battleground. Paris, Hong Kong, even Antarctica! There will be no safe zones this year, no places to hide. In the next twenty-four hours, the entire world will know my name. They will see my beautiful work of art, first hand. No one will be safe. I promise you that. Good luck driver, and welcome to Twisted Metal.

Contestants [ ]

TM2 has a total of fourteen contestants in the game, two more than the original 12. Five of them are new characters that are playable from the start, seven are returning vehicles from the previous title, and two are unlockable.

Returning Contestants [ ]

New contestants [ ], boss/unlockable contestants [ ], game modes [ ], single player [ ].

  • Challenge Match

Multi-Player [ ]

  • Co-Op Tournament

Single Player Battlegrounds [ ]

  • Los Angeles - Quake Zone Rumble: L.A. stands in ruins after the previous Twisted Metal contest with smoldering buildings and a fire pit. You take on 6 opponents here.
  • Moscow - Suicide Slide: An abandoned missile silo is in the center of this rather small stage. Weapons regenerate from the silo until it is destroyed. You take on 5 opponents here.
  • Paris - Monumental Disaster: Scenic Paris is awaiting destruction. The Eiffel Tower can be knocked down allowing vehicles access to the Parisian rooftops, while the painting in the Louvre can be burned down. You take on 6 opponents here.
  • Amazonia - Fire Walk: A fiery area with temples and lava alike. You take on 6 opponents before fighting Minion . If you're playing on Easy Difficulty, the game ends here.
  • New York - The Big Leap: The Big Apple is your playground as you leap from rooftop to rooftop with the New York City skyline in the distance. Be careful, though! Falling off the roof results in loss of life. You take on 6 opponents here.
  • Antarctica - The Drop Zone: Bundle up! The frigid wonderland begins to melt away as you battle your opponents. Just make sure you're not on the cracking ice as it begins to sink! You take on 7 opponents here.
  • Holland - Field of Screams: This is a rather small stage, but your opponents are many. You take on 9 opponents as you drive through the fields and windmills of Holland.
  • Dark Tooth - Hong Kong Krunch: Played on the Hong Kong level. It is not an actual level, but it does have its own password . If you beat Dark Tooth here, you get to see your character's ending.

Multi-Player Battlegrounds [ ]

In addition to the Single Player Battlegrounds, there are a few battlegrounds specifically for 2 player Challenge Mode.

  • Suicide Swamp : One of the 3 hidden two player levels only available in Challenge Mode. This is a Battleground from Jet Moto, also developed by SingleTrac studios . When selecting your level in 2 player challenge, use this code to enter the area: ↑ ↓ → R1
  • Rooftop Combat : One of the 3 hidden two player levels only available in Challenge Mode. This is the Rooftops Combat 'The Final Battle' Battleground from TM(1995) . When selecting your level in 2 player challenge, use this code to enter the area: ↓ ← R1 ↓
  • Assault on Cyburbia : One of the 3 hidden two player levels only available in Challenge Mode. This is the Assault on Cyburbia Battleground from TM(1995) . When selecting your level in 2 player challenge, use this code to enter the area: ↓ ↑ L1 R1

Soundtrack [ ]

  • Calypso's blimp is first seen here. Calypso used it as his office base. The blimp underwent a complete redesign in Twisted Metal III where it served as the final stage. In Twisted Metal: Black , it is reverted back to an ornamental blimp (any purpose else unrelated to the Twisted Metal contest directly).
  • Early concept art suggestions that Darkside was originally intended to return for Twisted Metal 2 , but did not make the final roster. The game's only known cut character, Granny Dark , is suspected to have been planned as Darkside's new driver.
  • Although Sweet Tooth returns in this game and can be encountered as a standard enemy, he himself is unselectable to control without the use of a special code.
  • Unlike other returning vehicles, Sweet Tooth and Minion entirely reuse their models and textures from the first Twisted Metal game.
  • The story of Jamie Roberts, driver of Outlaw 2, all but confirms that Carl Roberts, the original Outlaw, was the canonical winner of the first Twisted Metal game. Despite this, Sweet Tooth, Minion, Thumper and Mr. Grimm all explicitly feature the same drivers from the first game, confirming that they survived the previous tournament.
  • In the promotional demonstration video included with the Interactive CD Sampler Pack Volume Three, two unused beta names for enemies can be seen: DeadHead (Hammerhead) and Bam Bam (Mr. Slam). Also, a beta Yellow Jacket is seen as a playable character. [ citation needed ]
  • Early in its development, TM2 was proposed to be set in the future, with floating futuristic vehicles instead of traditional wheeled ones. This idea never left the concept art stages, as it was believed the idea of programming hovering vehicles would be much too difficult at the time.
  • TM2 made the driving controls easier from Twisted Metal (1995) by making the vehicles able to turn without any forward or backward momentum. This has been included in every other TM game to date.
  • In the ending cutscenes, the player meets Calypso on the rooftops of New York, but the final level in the game is Hong Kong, with New York being the fifth level. This could imply that the New York Rooftops were the final level originally, as it would relate to the final level in TM(1995) .
  • This, and TM1 , are the only games in the series released on a non-Sony console, as both titles later received PC ports.
  • This is the second out of the four games in the series to feature the Password screen.

Description of Twisted Metal 2

The second in the Twisted Metal series of car combat games, and the last to be developed by SingleTrac, Twisted Metal 2 is considered by most of its fans to be the pinnacle of the series.

Combat takes place between a wide array of vehicles ranging from a man strapped between two wheels to an ice cream truck, using an eclectic arrangement of weaponry. The action takes place in 8 different locales around the world, many featuring destructible buildings and landmarks.

The plot - the least important element in games of this kind - is simple: you are competing in a worldwide car combat game staged by the a powerful man named Calypso. You pick your vehicle from an array of heavily-modified cars, including a flamethrowing Chevette, a spinning F1, to a dangerous contraption that consists of nothing more than two monster wheels (with you strapped in the middle). You then play through a series of arena throughout the world, picking up weapons and trying to kill other vehicles before you are toast.

Like other SingleTrac games (most notably JetMoto ), the gameplay in Twisted Metal 2 is very well designed. Each car has its own special move, and the game obeys a logical yet totally unrealistic physics model that allows you to turn on a dime and go flying 100 feet in the air. The weapons in comparison are quite standard: dumbfire and homing missiles, ricochet bombs, mines, napalm, and many more. The environments are also very well-designed. The Paris level, for example, features a destructible Eiffel Tower in addition to several priceless works of art in the Louvre; the Antarctica level collapses piece by piece until one small glacier island is left; the incredibly large Hong Kong level contains a subway (complete with trains coming and going on schedule) and one of the biggest and most difficult bosses you will ever see.

There are also a few multiplayer modes to choose from, including a two-player co-operative mode that allows you and a friend to go against computer-controlled teams.

With excellent levels, furious action, and unrealistic but fun physics, Twisted Metal 2 is definitely worth a look for anyone who enjoys games like Quarantine , Death Drome , or Rocket Jockey . Two thumbs up, way up!

The Fan Made edition was released by LuKeStorm and FF . There is a false trojan when virus scanned. It has the original version as well as a Russian hack that rebalances the game. Single player is the original game with no changes (which most of us play online) and multiplayer launches with the Russian hacks.

If you want to use a controller with this game, try xpadder to remap your controller for it. If you're trying to play this natively on older hardware, then xpadder 2007.12.07a is the last version to work on win9x/me.

Anyone has any idea of how to fix the aspect ratio in this, TM1 and Jet Moto? Even though these repacks are awesome, the games still look awfully stretched on a 16:9 screen. I'm trying to hex edit the executable by comparing it to the PS1 version (which has a known widescreen patch) but I couldn't find any useful addresses yet.

You can change controls in the rip version. The menus run very fast, so you need to tap the button once very quickly to get into the menu. Then you can enable the gamepad and edit button mappings.

Both ISO and RIP work. Unfortunately, RIP doesn't have the movie files at all. The ISO has the movies, but will either only play the audio or will crash the game. Copying the movies from the ISO to the RIP doesn't work.

Box artwork for Twisted Metal 2.

Twisted Metal 2 (known in Europe as Twisted Metal 2: World Tour and Twisted Metal EX in Japan) is the second and most successful game in the vehicular combat Twisted Metal series. It was developed by the game studio SingleTrac , published by Sony , and released in 1996 for PlayStation and Windows .

The PC version features slightly cut-down graphics compared to the PlayStation version (minor details of some levels disappeared) but it doesn't require a 3D accelerator video card and plays well on weak descendants. It also features multiplayer mode over a modem line or Internet.

Two years after its release, Twisted Metal 2 was re-released as a Sony Greatest Hits game. A similar title was released in Japan in 2007 . On November 1, 2007, it was also released for download in North America on the PlayStation Network .

In concept, Twisted Metal 2 is a demolition derby which permits the usage of ballistic projectiles. Players choose a vehicle and an arena – or a series of arenas in the story mode – to engage in battle with opposing drivers. A variety of weapons are obtainable by pick-ups scattered throughout the stage. The objective of the game is to be the last remaining player.

The story follows up from the first game, having a man named Calypso host a vehicular combat tournament called Twisted Metal, which grants its winner a single prize: anything he or she desires. There is a general "be careful what you wish for" theme, as many of the contestants wind up with not-so-happy endings.

The plot is set a year after the first game, but instead of the city of Los Angeles being the arena of the contest (which was left in ruins by the previous 10 Twisted Metal tournaments), cities from all over the world are used.

Twisted Metal 2: World Tour

twisted metal 2 world tour

Sequels don’t often live upto expectation or the class of the original. Sure, there are some that exceed it, such as Street Fighter II and Creatures II, but often the sequel of a game is more likely to be a welcome return, an enchancement that doesn’t do that well as the gameplay mechanics are screwed, or just something dreadful. It does seem to be the case though if you call something other than “Game Name 2”, it will do better – take for example the two games mentioned in the second sentance.

Twisted Metal: World Tour was the second game in the Twisted Metal series that is still going strong today. The first game was a fairly average but nice concept car battle game, that used weapons and cars to blast opponents into submission. Whilst fun, the characters were a bit samey at times with a number of overly flashy cars, and the levels were even worse – using fairly nondescript areas of Los Angeles.

Twisted Metal: World Tour changed that from the first game. First, the character lineup was vastly improved to include a more varied range of characters. Included were an F1 Car, a Hearse, a JCB and a guy with two hands trapped inside giant wheels. My favourite car from the original – a taxi – was dropped, but everything else was there.

twisted metal 2 world tour

LA was the sole area in the original, at it was destroyed beyond recognition in the first Twisted Metal (which is the name of the tournament that the game takes it’s name from). Calypso (the tournament owner) decided to hold his latest tournament worldwide. This was a masterstroke as it gave a rise of the memorable levels of this game. Why memorable? Because there is one which is a bit poor, the rest are awesome. Paris is probably the best level in Twisted Metal history (and – if you’ve ever been – it’s surprisingly accurate for a game of this nature), and even levels such as the Antartic are tremendous fun. I do also have a soft spot for the level that’s set in Holland, as the 9 car clusterfumble that it is makes it tremendous on multiplayer.

The other beauty of this game is the indepth storyline. Twisted Metal is from the Mortal Kombat school of “games that shouldn’t have storylines but do”, and Twisted Metal: World Tour probably has one of the better ones. For one, it continues nicely from the first game. Secondly, it continues the story and everything makes sense in the beginning. Finally it’s the last Twisted Metal game I liked. The third and fourth installments of the game were rubbish, and the “True sequels” on the PS2 the game took a lot darker role, which I don’t like. This game still maintained a black humour which made it less scary and (no pun intended) twisted than the later games. It was colourful, and – whilst violent – wasn’t as sadistic and evil as the later games.

This game is a pretty much retro game classic, like – with a lot of games on this site – didn’t really get the attention it deserved, particuarly in the UK markets. In the States it was more successful, but the amount of times this game has been re-reviewed and pepole have said “you know what? It’s actually rather fun”. It’s not particualrly deep, and the car controls are a bit idiosynchratic. Nevertheless, this is a fabulously fun game, and the price of it on ebay shows that those who have played it, love it.
