Travel + Leisure / David Hattan

Packing a travel skincare routine can be tricky. On the one hand, you want to address all your regular skincare needs and be prepared for common travel-induced skin stressors such as drying plane cabins or extra time spent outside in the sun. On the other hand, limited luggage real estate and the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for carrying on liquids will prevent you from piling all your favorite full-size skincare products into your bag.

When planning a trip, it’s wise to invest in a travel-size skincare set. All the items will already be in TSA-approved containers, so there’s no need for messy transfers into smaller vessels. Buying products as a set also simplifies the shopping process since the products are designed to be used in tandem. And you won’t have to worry about accidentally mixing incompatible skincare ingredients. Just consider testing the products before your trip to make sure any new ingredients don’t irritate your skin.

Keep reading to shop the travel-size skincare sets below, including several that I personally use and love.

Best Overall

Geologie travel skincare set.

It’s a full skincare routine (including SPF) designed by dermatologists.

If you’re new to retinol, spot-test the night cream before applying it all over your face.

Geologie’s sample set includes a full skincare routine without any extra fluff. Start your routine with the 2 percent salicylic acid cleanser, which promises to deeply cleanse your skin, unclog pores, and control excess oil. Next, the eye cream (powered by kojic acid, caffeine, and niacinamide) gently helps to banish any dark circles caused by lack of sleep on your red-eye flight. In the morning, you’ll finish with an SPF 15 niacinamide moisturizer for long-lasting hydration while controlling excess oil and shine. At night, your ritual culminates with a 0.2 percent retinol formula to target fine lines and wrinkles while hyaluronic acid and niacinamide boost hydration.

Since you’ll be using the cleanser morning and night, the set conveniently includes two tubes so you won’t risk running out. For short trips, you can leave one of the cleansers at home. The unisex set is best suited for oily, combination, or normal skin.

What’s Inside: Cleanser (2), SPF 15 moisturizer, night cream, eye cream

Best for Oily Skin

Origins 6-piece travel-size cleansing & moisturizing best-sellers set.

Five pore-clearing products are housed in a zippered carrying case.

It includes essential oils, which can irritate sensitive skin.

If you have oily skin, or if you’re overloading your skin sweat and/or makeup, you’ll want a skincare set that deeply cleanses your clogged pores. Origins’ five-step system does just that. It includes a frothy face wash, a soothing treatment lotion, a powerful anti-aging serum, and an oil-free gel moisturizer that won’t leave you feeling greasy. In addition, there’s a rinse-off charcoal mask that can be used once a week (or more, if needed) to purify and visibly reduce pores. There’s even a zippered carrying case included to keep all the items secure. Pro tip: apply the mask on the plane ride home to refresh your post-travel skin and give you an activity to help break up a boring flight.

What’s Inside: Cleanser, mask, treatment lotion, serum, moisturizer, carrying case

Best for Dry Skin

Drunk elephant the littles 7.0 travel skincare set.

The latest version of the fan-favorite set includes a new case and a tinted SPF moisturizer.

Three serums might be too much for skincare minimalists.

Plane cabins are notorious for drying out your skin, and if your epidermis leans dry to begin with, you’ll want to make sure you’re loaded up on deeply moisturizing skincare products. Drunk Elephant launched the latest version of their fan-favorite Littles kit, and it’s ideal for skin that needs extra quenching. It includes a provitamin B5-infused serum (to be used day and night) designed to flood the skin with intense hydration. Also along for the ride: a vitamin C day serum, a glycolic night serum, a makeup-removing jelly cleanser, a peptide moisturizer, and a sheer, tinted SPF 30 mineral cream that is made to blur imperfections while adding a layer of sun protection.

What’s Inside: Cleanser, moisturizer, tinted face sunscreen, day and night serums (3), carrying case

Best for Combination Skin

Fenty skin travel-size start'r set.

It includes multitasking products that help cut down your skincare haul.

It doesn’t include a non-SPF night cream.

Combination skin requires products that hydrate and nourish the dryer portions of the skin but also don’t exacerbate oiliness in the oily sections. This three-step skincare routine by Fenty Skin is ideal for those with combination skin because it includes products that are moisturizing and oil-free. The cleanser is gentle yet tough enough to eradicate makeup including waterproof mascara. A toner-serum hybrid dubbed Fat Water can tighten the look of pores, brighten, and reduce shine. The last step is a mineral SPF 30 hyaluronic acid moisturizer that won’t leave your skin feeling greasy. As a bonus, there’s also a single-use, sample-size packet of body cream to toss in your toiletry bag .

What’s Inside: Cleanser, toner-serum hybrid, SPF 30 moisturizer, body cream (sample size)

Best for Sensitive Skin

Tula discovery 5-piece essentials kit.

The no-frills skincare products can all be used morning and night.

It doesn’t include SPF.

Tula’s skincare products are powered by probiotic extracts, superfoods, and other ingredients designed to prevent irritating the skin. This travel-friendly set includes a turmeric-infused, makeup-removing gel cleanser, which is perfect for evening skincare routines. Next, a glycolic acid toner exfoliates and hydrates your skin, followed by an illuminating serum featuring Japanese mandarin. The last step is a non-comedogenic squalane-infused moisturizer. Since all the products can be used both day and night, you won’t need to double up on any of your items, ultimately giving you more luggage space.

What’s Inside: Cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, carrying case

Best for Acne-prone Skin

Paula's choice mini clear skin starter set.

The set includes salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to fight breakouts.

The active ingredients can irritate sensitive skin.

Traveling can exacerbate acne: air quality, change in humidity levels, and water quality (to name a few) can make your skin upset. If your face is prone to breakouts, consider vacationing with a set designed to stave off pimples, like this one from Paula’s Choice. It includes a salicylic acid cleanser, a two percent salicylic acid exfoliating solution, a two and a half percent benzoyl peroxide spot treatment, and an oil-free gel-cream moisturizer. Just remember that salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can both increase sensitivity to the sun, so it’s important to follow your skincare regimen with SPF 30 or higher (not included in this set) for daytime use.

What’s Inside: Cleanser, exfoliating solution, spot treatment, moisturizer

Best with SPF

Dermstore best of dermstore: the travel edit kit.

It includes a variety of mini products, from cult-favorite under-eye patches to whitening toothpaste.

It’s best for people who enjoy more extensive skincare routines.

No matter where you’re headed, SPF should be a top-tier item on your packing list. This 11-piece collection includes two SPF 30 products to shield your skin from harmful rays: a minty lip balm and a mineral sunscreen. Other delights in the zippered carrying case include a gentle gel cleanser, a brightening eye cream, two nourishing moisturizers, non-aerosol dry shampoo, and whitening toothpaste. For those who don’t mind a few extra steps in their vacation skincare routine, there’s also an exfoliating peel, a retinol serum, and under-eye patches. Travel + Leisure editors are big fans of using under-eye patches on long-hauls flights , so we recommend using those to arrive at your destination looking fresh and feeling hydrated.

What’s Inside: Cleanser, eye cream, two moisturizers, peel pads, retinol serum, sunscreen, lip balm, dry shampoo, under-eye patches, carrying case

Best for Lips

Laneige icons to go set.

The overnight lip mask can be used during the daytime, too.

It doesn’t include a cleanser or SPF.

This set helps deliver a surge of hydration to your skin and lips — which is likely much needed if you’ve just exited the dry atmosphere of a plane cabin. After cleansing, gently pat the ceremide- and peptide-filled cream-toner hybrid into your skin. Follow with the hyaluronic acid moisturizer, and finish with the leave-on water sleeping mask at night. Though the lip balm included in this set is technically an overnight lip mask, many people (including me) multipurpose it for daytime use as well. It’s thick without being sticky, and it has a delicious berry scent.

What’s Inside: Toner, day moisturizer, lip mask, night moisturizer

Best for Eyes

Kiehl’s on-the-go essentials gift set.

It includes a nourishing and creamy avocado eye treatment.

Retinol (in the serum) can irritate sensitive skin.

Red-eye flights can lead to tired, puffy eyes, but this six-piece set has the perfect antidote: Kiehl’s fan-favorite avocado oil- and shea butter-infused eye cream, which promises to hydrate, depuff, and brighten eyes. Other goodies in this bundle include a foaming squalane cleanser, a potent daily retinol serum, a squalane face moisturizer, and a nighttime face oil that targets wrinkles and fine lines. If your skin tends to get oily or break out, you’ll enjoy the included rinse-off face mask. The Amazonian white clay and aloe mask are designed to minimize pores and blackheads when left on the skin for 10 minutes (per the brand’s instructions).

What’s Inside: Cleanser, retinol serum, eye cream, mask, moisturizer, face oil

Best for Body

Alo glow system discovery set.

The six-piece set includes both face and body products.

Sunscreen is not included.

If your trip accommodation is not a hotel, you may need to pack your own body wash and lotion. In this case, this face and body set from Alo is a great option. It includes a brightening enzyme facial cleanser, which you’ll follow with an unscented facial moisturizer. For your body routine, there’s a hydrating vitamin C body wash and a destressing superfruit body lotion. There’s also a head-to-toe glow oil, which promises to deeply hydrate the skin and lock in moisture. A magnesium and vitamin C body spray that can relieve muscle tension will come in handy for adventurous types that have an activity-filled trip planned.

What’s Inside: Face cleanser, face moisturizer, body wash, body lotion, face and body oil, body mist

Tips for Buying Travel-size Skincare Kits

Consider size limitations and quantity.

The TSA limits the amount of liquids, gels, and aerosols that can be stowed in your carry-on to 3.4 ounces apiece. Beyond that, all of your liquids must fit in one quart-sized resealable bag. If you want to travel with more liquids or larger-sized containers, they must be packed in your checked bag .

When choosing a travel-size skincare kit, consider other liquids that you’ll need to add as well, including (but not limited to) toothpaste, sunscreen, bug spray, shampoo, and conditioner. If you’re having trouble fitting all of your items in a quart-sized bag, consider leaving behind some items (like body wash and shampoo) that are typically made available in hotel bathrooms.

Choose the best set for your skincare needs

When you travel, it’s important to consider your skin type (normal, oily, combination, or sensitive) and choose a travel-sized skincare set that’s tailored to your skin’s specific needs. You’ll also want to be mindful of your trip destination and any intended activities. For instance, if you’re traveling to a colder climate, be prepared for drier skin and chapped lips. If you’re headed to a beachy location, don’t forget to load up on sunscreen .

Any liquid, gel, or aerosol skincare products in your carry-on or personal item must be 3.4 ounces or less. If you want to carry-on a product that comes in a larger container, consider transferring it to a 3.4-ounce-or-less leak-proof vessel before your flight or packing it in your checked bag.

The air circulated in plane cabins is very dry, and therefore can leave your skin feeling dry as well. It’s advised to moisturize your face and lips before you board a plane. On long-haul flights, you may want to carry a travel-size moisturizer and lip balm with you to reapply hydration mid-flight.

The best travel beauty kits to sling in your hand luggage

By Anita Bhagwandas

The best travel beauty kits to shop before your next trip

This is a slightly traumatic memory to relive, but regale it I shall for last-minute packers everywhere. I was headed to the airport for a work trip and realised I hadn’t packed any perfume, so I slung my beloved Coromandel Les Exclusifs De Chanel fragrance into my handbag. It looked around 100ml I thought (very wrong), and even if it weren’t, surely they’d let me through with it anyway; it’s just perfume, right? (wrong again.) Cut to several hours later at the airport security gates and as my colleagues watched in horror when a security guard held up my Chanel, shook his head and said, “ This is DOUBLE the amount you’re allowed. It’s a no.”

I know this was a real rookie error; the 100ml rule has been in place since 2006, but my stomach lurched at the thought of losing the scent I’d been given for my birthday just a few weeks before. I started welling up a bit, but thankfully a sense of humanity intervened and I was excused with my Chanel – and a stern warning. It was a lesson I heeded, and since then, I’ve always double-checked before I’ve packed a beloved product.

Chances are, you’ve been there too – we all have. So to take the hassle out of last-minute trips, size checking and decanting, these are my favourite beauty travel kits that you can simply grab before you fly. Even when the 100ml rule is eventually scrapped, these are still super useful for all your travel adventures as a space saver and a chance to try new products without committing to the full-size ones.

However, wasted travel minis are an environmental issue. If you have any you don’t like or know you won't use; you can donate used and unused products to those who need them via the Toiletries Amnesty .

20 Must-Have Travel Kit Essentials: 2023 Backpack Checklist

Priya sharma

Oh, the excitement of traveling! The destination has been decided, the tickets have been bought, the hotel has been reserved, the shopping has been completed, and the only thing left to do is the packing.

Packing luggage before a vacation is enjoyable for some but may be difficult for others. You get your favorite outfits and the new ones you got, especially for this vacation.

When preparing for a trip, it’s crucial to pack your travel kit essentials, including items like toiletries, medications, and chargers. Your travel needs will vary depending on your location, but there are a few items that you will require regardless of where you go.

This article will give you the complete list of travel bag pack essentials, so continue reading to know more. Our essential travel packing list can help you organize and pack everything you need for a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Setting off on a trip, whether it’s a quick getaway or a big adventure, having a ready travel kit is super important. It’s like your secret to feeling comfy, secure, and happy during your journey. But what exactly should be in this special kit? Here are the important things that should always be in your travel kit.

1. Best Comfortable Clothes-

Keep the destination in mind when you search for clothes for your vacation. You will need different clothing for a place covered in snow and one covered with beaches. Pack cardigans, sweaters, and other winter clothing when traveling somewhere chilly.

Aside from your checked luggage, pack a few wardrobe items in your cabin bag, such as a cardigan, cap, a pair of comfy T-shirts, and shorts. It’s always a good idea to be prepared if the airline misplaces your bags or another bad scenario occurs.

2. Travel Wallet-

A travel wallet must have important things like money, cards, and travel documents all in one safe place. It usually has extra pockets and spaces to keep things organized. You can keep your passport, tickets, credit cards, and even some cash in it. Use it to keep track of all your critical papers, such as the passport, AADHAR card, and travel tickets.

Along with the documents, you may use them to store currencies, debit and credit cards, hotel key cards, and various other items.

3. Toiletries-

When we’re away from home, certain things make us feel good. When traveling, having your toiletry pack on hand to help you clean up and feel better might be the distinction between a pleasant and unpleasant journey.

So, carry everything you need in a large toiletry bag. While you should pick up minor goods at your location, some skincare, personal care, and other amenities may be difficult to locate while traveling abroad.

Keep a modest set of amenities in your carry-on luggage, such as your toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and face wash. This way, you won’t ruin your neatly packed bag in public.

4. Portable Chargers and Cords-

It must be among the most necessary travel items. You wouldn’t expect your device to die during a thrilling movie scene on a plane or train. It would be much worse if you were working while traveling or if your phone died with all your trip information.

Furthermore, no battery in the smartphone or camera means no images, which you do not want! To avoid such problems, bring your chargers as well as a portable backup charger.

5. Medications-

Bringing along your necessary medications in your travel kit essentials ensures you have a safe and enjoyable trip without any health concerns. Make sure to keep your prescription on hand and some additional remedies in case you become ill due to headaches, stomach trouble, or other problems. Always carry your small portable first aid kit wherever you travel.

When you are on medical treatment, always keep it with you, even if you only take it infrequently. Carry over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol, diarrhea medicine, pain relievers, motion sickness tablets, and allergy medication. Bandages, sanitizer, and mosquito and insect repellents are also essential.

6. Sunscreen, Moisturizer & Lip Balm-

When on vacation, one of the most crucial travel essentials is sunscreen. It will shield you from dangerous sunlight while keeping your skin safe. If you’re flying, use sunscreen during the trip, particularly if you have a window seat.

Pack your moisturizer and lip balm with you, as well as your sunscreen, to keep your skin moisturized, and you look great in all of your photos.

7. Sanitizers and Face Masks-

If you are on a long road trip, your travel backpack essentials must include Sanitizers and face masks.

It’s important to have your face mask at all times, and it’s equally vital to make sure they are comfortable for extended use.

Along with these masks, have a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your handbag since airports and train stations receive many people regularly, and you must be taking care of your hygiene and wellness.

And these masks also help you not catch any viruses if some people are sick. It was always mandatory.

8. Makeup and Accessories-

Makeup and accessories were essential for women, and they could put on their favorite lipstick color on the trip. With the correct accessories and cosmetics, you can alter any look. Talk about stylish attire.

Sweaters, shrugs, Scarves, half-jackets, or any other layers you can add or remove are ideal.

Sunglasses, Earrings, small chains, finger rings, a sling bag, or anything else that may stand out and liven up your clothing might be useful additions to your luggage.

9. Hygiene products-

One of the last things you wish to forget on your trip is any necessary hygiene or medical supplies. While you may acquire additional deodorant to keep fresh on your vacation, it’s far more crucial to remember drugs that will be very hard to get rid of once you arrive.

Contact lenses, birth control pills, safety pads, prescription glasses, and other drugs are included.

Most of the time, women can arrange a trip around their cycle, but life happens. Traveling without sanitary products may be pricey and inconvenient, particularly if you need them. So, make it a practice to bring a few with you. It is preferable to possess and not require them but rather to not have and require them.

10. Entertainment to Beat Boredom-

This may seem like a millennial thing to some but remember to bring your iPad, laptop, or book. You can’t keep looking through the window for the duration of the trip, can you?

Long travels may be tedious, especially with no onboard entertainment system. To keep oneself engaged while traveling, read your favorite book, watch a movie, or play games. So always take your favorite book, or watch your favorite movie or series.

11. Neck Pillow-

You don’t want to have serious neck pain during your journey. In that case, bring a neck cushion with you. This neck pillow can come in handy if you have a long wait for your flight or train and are feeling drowsy.

Furthermore, these U-shaped neck pillows are lightweight and portable. Think again if this needs to be added to your list of must-have travel items.

12. Comfortable Shoes-

This is the point where we all make mistakes. Don’t carry as much footwear to match your outfit. Carry one pair of exceptionally comfy shoes for traveling, strolling about, and wherever you go.

If you’re heading to a formal dinner or many parties, bring a pair of useful and comfy party shoes, such as black pumps or nude flats.

Sandals or beach sandals are an obvious choice for a beach holiday. However, before leaving on vacation, ensure you’ve worn them for a while because new flip-flops might be uncomfortable. In general, closed footwear is a good idea.

13. Sunglasses and hat-

Make sure to pack sunglasses and a hat in your travel backpack. These are simple but important things that can make your trip even better. Sunglasses stop the bright sun from hurting your eyes and keep them safe from bad sun rays. Wearing a hat does two good things – it stops the sun from making your face red, and it helps you stay cooler when it’s hot outside. Whether walking around a busy city, sitting by the sea, or hiking in nature, sunglasses and a hat help you a lot. Put them in your bag, and you’ll be ready for a fun trip with comfy eyes and extra shade from the sun.

14. Insect Repellent-

Don’t forget to bring insect repellent when you travel. This is something that keeps bugs away from you. Bugs like mosquitoes can bite and make you itchy, but using insect repellent helps keep them from coming close.

It’s really helpful, especially if you’re going to places with many bugs. Just put some on your skin before you go outside, and you’ll be much more comfortable without those annoying bug bites. It’s a good thing to have in your bag to make sure you have a nicer time outdoors.

15. Lightweight rain jacket or umbrella-

Lightweight rain jackets or umbrellas are essential to pack if you are traveling to a place where rain is common or if the weather can change suddenly. These items help you stay dry and comfortable when it starts to rain unexpectedly.

A lightweight rain jacket is easy to carry and can keep you dry without taking up much space in your bag. On the other hand, an umbrella can be a handy accessory to shield you from rain showers. Whether you’re exploring the city, hiking, or simply walking around, having a rain jacket or umbrella can make sure you enjoy your travel without getting soaked.

16. Towels and Sleepwear-

Your travel kit essentials should include a towel and sleepwear to make your trip comfy. Although, Budget hostels rarely offer complimentary bath towels to visitors, so have one on hand just in case. Microfiber towels fold up exceptionally compactly and dry quickly. They can even be used at the beach.

Pack a set or two of pajamas for folks who prefer sleeping more comfortably and prefer not to crumple your daywear by sleeping in it. Generally, go for big tees and cozy sweats.

17. Ziplock Bags / Plastic Bags and Toiletry bag-

Things you may find around the house that are good for keeping dirty clothing, various currencies for organizing, and other random stuff. They can also serve as a first layer of waterproofing for electronics. A toiletry bag is like a special bag for your personal things that you need for taking care of yourself. It’s a bit like a small Pouch just for your soap, toothbrush, shampoo, and other things you use in the bathroom.

18. Small Travel Pouch-

A small travel pouch is a handy little bag that you can use to keep your important things organized during your trip. It’s like a mini-version of your regular bag, but it’s perfect for holding items like your passport, tickets, and small items that you need to find quickly. You can also use it to keep your phone, keys, and money safe and easy to reach. It’s small enough to fit inside your bigger bag or even in your pocket, so you can have your important stuff with you wherever you go. This way, you can take some weight off your bag and avoid returning to the accommodation.

19. Travel-sized first aid kit-

A travel-sized first aid kit is like a little box of help for when someone gets hurt or feels unwell during a trip. It has basic things like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers. If someone gets a small cut, you can clean it with the wipes and put on a bandage. If they have a headache, you can give them a pain reliever. It’s like having a small doctor’s kit with you. This kit doesn’t take much space in your bag but can be really useful in case someone needs quick care. It’s good to have it just in case something unexpected happens.

20. Snacks and reusable water bottle

Bringing snacks and a reusable water bottle on your trip is a smart idea. Snacks are like little bites of energy that you can have when you’re hungry, and a reusable water bottle is a special kind of bottle that you can fill with water and use again and again.

When you’re exploring or on the go, having some snacks with you can keep you from feeling too hungry, and a reusable water bottle helps you stay hydrated (that means having enough water in your body). Instead of buying water bottles all the time, you can fill your reusable one, which is good for the environment too. It’s a great way to save money and stay refreshed during your travels.

Conclusion-

Make a list of the things that are required you intend to bring on the trip. Remember to bring all travel documents, such as identification, travel insurance, and an itinerary, while preparing for a vacation. Pack a first-aid kit and toiletries as well.

Avoid overpacking by packing clothing, shoes, skincare products, cosmetics, and accessories appropriate for the temperature and destination. You can also bring books, magazines, or earbuds for listening to music as entertainment throughout the journey. Above mentioned essential travel packing list includes all the necessary items to ensure you’re well-prepared for your journey.

Ten travel tips to stay healthy and safe while vacationing with kids

It’s no secret travel can be as stressful as it is rewarding — from planning and packing to navigating and adapting, you learn to expect the unexpected.

However, traveling with kids can involve a lot more moving parts to the process of getting to your destination. When traveling, making sure your kids stay safe and healthy during your trip is a top priority. Gathered from fellow parents, get a head start on your next adventure with this list of the top 10 best tips for traveling with kids.

1. Pack extra clothing in your carry-on

Accidents can happen with kids of all ages. Parent Nubia Duvall Wilson recalls how she wishes she remembered this packing tip, “Our potty-trained toddler son had an accident right before boarding a plane. We had to clean him up in the bathroom, and he ended up without underwear. He was a good sport, but I felt terrible for not having a spare pair.”

Always keep an extra outfit and underwear in your carry-on for an easy change that will keep your child clean and comfortable.

2. Protect against germs on public transport

Airplanes, trains, buses and boats, whatever the mode of public transport — it probably has a lot of germs, especially on tray tables, arm rests and windows. Wilson also recommends wiping down these surfaces thoroughly, as your child is likely to touch and press against them often. A quick but thorough cleaning can help prevent the spread of bacteria and keep your child healthy for the remainder of the vacation. Frequent hand-washing or hand sanitizer is a good idea as well.

3. Remember hydration, snacks and sleep items

Ensuring your kids stay hydrated, well-fed and well-rested is crucial during travel. Always have reusable water bottles handy to refill and grab a bunch of healthy, packable snacks to avoid overly sugary options on the go. Comfort is key for better sleep — bring familiar items such as their car seat for the plane, an extended seat cushion or travel pillow for head support. Noise-canceling headphones or a soft eye mask can block out ambient noise and light. Additionally, a favorite blanket, stuffed animal or even a cozy set of pajamas can provide a sense of security, making it easier for your child to settle down and rest.

4. Opt for grocery delivery

Vacation rentals often offer the convenience of grocery delivery. This can be a lifesaver, especially when traveling with toddlers. Wilson shares, “We chose vacation rentals over hotels to have groceries delivered in advance. It saved us from the hassle of shopping with cranky kids who just wanted to get to the pool or beach.” This also allows you the ability to customize your order, so you’ll have your kids favorite foods easily available and will be able to feed them balanced meals throughout the trip, rather than relying solely on limited restaurant kids menu options. You’ll likely save money too!

5. Use digital devices for safety

When visiting crowded places like Disney, consider equipping your kids with digital devices to maximize travel safety. These allow for convenient tracking and communication in case you get separated. Wilson told us, “Our kids, aged 7 and 8, had their Gabb watches on during our Disney trip, giving us peace of mind knowing we could contact them if necessary.” If your kids are too young to use devices, parent Daniel Clarke suggests waterproof silicone bracelets or clothing tags with your contact information and any medical details to help you feel more assured.

6. Be consistent with sun protection

Traveling, especially during summer, means constant sun exposure — and nothing ruins the fun on vacation like a bad sunburn. You can protect your kids by frequently applying sunscreen, using sun shades in the car and encouraging them to wear hats and sunglasses. Parent Amy Johnson mentioned, “Our car has sun shades, which help our kids nap and stay cool during long drives. I always keep sunscreen sticks handy to avoid getting my hands dirty.” Of course, sunburns do happen, so adding aloe or cooling lotion to your bag is a smart choice too.

7. Prioritize time management and regular breaks

Traveling can require a lot of waiting in lines and sitting still in a seat. With kids, it’s best to give yourself an extra time buffer whenever possible in case of unexpected challenges or delays. Plus, not rushing will protect your peace of mind and mood. On long trips, Johnson also recommends frequent stops to prevent your kids from getting too hot, overstimulated or uncomfortable. Whenever possible, encourage them to get up and move around to burn some energy.

8. Try out portable potty solutions

For those potty training or dealing with unfamiliar public restrooms, Johnson says that portable potty training chairs and folding travel potty seats have been super helpful for her family. These items not only make bathroom breaks more manageable but also help keep your kids safe from bacteria in public restrooms.

Frequently asking your children if they need to go to the restroom can prevent urgent situations and can also help them get used to the idea of going in new and unfamiliar settings.

9. Bring travel a first-aid kit and important documents

A well-stocked first-aid kit is a travel essential. Beyond the basics like Tylenol, Advil and bandages, consider including motion sickness medication, antihistamines, anti-itch cream, and stool softeners. “These items have saved us from emergency visits,” says parent Richard Campbell. You might also want to bring copies of any important medical documents or consider investing in travel health insurance for your kids, as it provides coverage for unexpected medical expenses and emergencies. Dr. Preeti Parikh, executive medical director at GoodRx, said it’s important to “make sure your children’s vaccines are up to date to prevent infections from diseases like measles, mumps and polio. Keep an eye on how your kids are feeling during travel and consult a medical provider if something feels off.”

10. Ask for help and split the work evenly

Traveling with kids can be overwhelming, so don’t hesitate to ask for help and split the work evenly among adults in your travel group. Discuss contingency plans, assign different responsibilities and share the load to reduce the mental burden. Above all, be patient with yourself — no travel experience will be perfect and that’s OK. If you’re traveling alone, check in with yourself often and remind yourself that you’re doing great. Be sure to set reasonable expectations and lean on others around you — you’ll often find kindness and support close by no matter where you are.

Travel Journal

A travel journal is not just for documenting your destination but also the journey. Use the uninterrupted time on your flight to jot down thoughts, doodle, or plan your itinerary. The physical act of writing can also be a relaxing way to pass the time. A creative traveler on a forum advises, “Write it down; it’s therapeutic, and the memories last a lifetime.”

There are many apps and devices designed for this purpose. The monotone soundscapes can be surprisingly effective in lulling you to sleep. “Ocean sounds help me sleep like a baby,” says a commenter on a sleep technology review site.</p>

To truly escape the noise of the aircraft and fellow passengers, earplugs are a must. They can help you get some much-needed sleep or simply enjoy a moment of silence. There are many types designed specifically for air travel that reduce cabin pressure.
