How to clear Safari’s cache and cookies on Mac

There are a handful of situations when clearing Safari’s cookies or cache–one of the places where Safari stores website data to avoid having to download it afresh each time you access a site–can help improve your browsing experience.

The first is when websites simply stop working when you access them on Safari. Perhaps Facebook stops updating with new posts, for example, or the images on a site don’t appear as they should. If this happens, it’s likely the cache has become corrupted.

Alternatively, if you find that personal info automatically completed on sites isn’t correct, deleting cookies can help. These are small files that sites use to save data about you and what you do on the site.

Even if none of these problems affect you, periodically cleaning browser data can help protect your privacy from snoops who want to discover what you’ve been up to online. In this article, therefore, we explain how to clear Safari’s cache and cookies on Mac.

How to clear Safari cookies and cache for websites

Cleaning cookies and the cache data for individual sites can be done via Safari’s Settings/Preferences.

• Open Safari
• Click on Safari in the menu at the top of the screen.
• Click on Settings or Preferences (depending on the version of macOS you are running).
• Go to the Privacy tab.
• Click on Manage Website Data…
• Choose Remove All or select websites individually to remove.

After the data is loaded you’ll probably see a long list of websites. You can choose to Remove All or just select individual websites you want to remove from this list. If you want to select a number of different sites you can click on one and then press and hold the Command key to select a second, third or fourth and so on. We recommend that you don’t select hundreds this way – it’s better to delete in batches just in case you have to start over.

If you would prefer to select all and then deselect the ones you want to keep you can do so. Use Command + A to select all, then press and hold Command while clicking on any website you are happy to keep in this list. Just click Remove afterwards, not Done, as that will just undo all your hard work.

There’s a search field you can use to track down individual sites.

Bear in mind that deleting cookies might remove autocompleted login usernames and passwords for sites, and will almost certainly log you out of that site if you’ve configured it to automatically log in each time you visit.

How to clear Safari cache

The hidden Safari Developer menu can be used to clear just the cache, leaving cookies and the browser history in place. This is a very useful diagnostic step to take before removing those two items if a website behaves badly.

If you just want to clear all your cache you can do so by following these steps:

• Open Safari.
• Click on Safari in menu bar at top of screen.
• Click on Settings/Preferences (depending on the version of macOS you are running).
• Click on the Advanced tab.
• Check the box beside Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar.
• Now there will be a new Develop tab in the menu at the top of your screen. Click on this.
• Click on Empty Caches.

Alternatively click on Option/Alt + Command + E.

Close any open Safari windows and select Empty Caches on the Develop menu. Then click File > New Window to start Safari with a clean cache.

How to remove autocomplete data from AutoFill

Safari’s AutoFill tool can fill in username and password details on websites as well as credit card details and other elements like your address and email details.

This can be really useful, but it can also be annoying if the data it fills in is incorrect or out of context. It’s also a problem when AutoFill helpfully enters old or incorrect passwords or emails and addresses.

You can change this data, or delete it by following these steps:

• Click on Safari.
• Click on Settings/Preferences.
• Choose the AutoFill tab.
• Here you can edit contact information, usernames and passwords, credit cards and other data. Click on Edit beside the category you want access to.
• You’ll need to enter your password or use Touch ID to gain access.

Delete incorrect data: If you are finding that Safari is autofilling incorrect data about you–your address, for example–click Edit beside Using information from my contacts. This will open up your Contacts app. Your card will be at the top or under My Card. You can add and amend data about you here.

Delete incorrect passwords and site logins: If you wanted to delete incorrect passwords, for example, you can just click on the Passwords tab. If you know which password you want to remove search for the website or service and then find the older password option (if there is more than one) and select it and then click on the – below the column to remove it. You can then select Delete Password. If that means there is no password saved for that website, you can then recreate the entry for the site by clicking the Add button. You’ll first need to provide the URL of the site (that is, something like https://facebook.com ), and then type the username and password alongside (hit the Tab key to move from field to field).

Delete logins and passwords system-wide

Pruning site logins can also be done via the Keychain Access app, which you’ll find in the Utilities folder of the Applications list in Finder, although you should be very careful using this app because it pretty much controls the entire security operation of your Mac! However, by removing errant username and password entries here you’ll stop virtually all of your Mac apps using them, and not just Safari.

Just type the name of the site into the Search field, and look in the list of results for entries of the kind Web Form Password. Right-click the entry and select Delete.

However, for the same reason, cookies can pose a privacy risk because of the information they hold about you, which is why you may want to remove them from your computer every so often.

The following steps show you how to delete cookies from Apple's Safari browser on Mac, iPhone , and iPad .

How to Delete Cookies in Safari on iOS

Note that the following steps clear all history, cookies and website data on your device, regardless of when the sites were accessed.

• Launch the Settings app on your iOS device.
• Scroll down and select Safari .
• Scroll down and select Clear History and Website Data .

How to Delete Cookies in Safari on macOS

• Launch Safari browser on your Mac.

How to Delete Cookies and Stored Website Data in Safari

Websites and advertisers use cookies to identify you and follow you around the internet, and they might also save other website data to remember you by. In Safari, you can delete these cookies and other data. Let's head to Safari's privacy settings.

Stored content can include a history of your site visits or information you provided the site, such as your name and email address. You can delete all of the website data at once or for individual sites.

Delete Cookies and Saved Data on the Mac

1. Select Preferences from the Safari menu or hold down the Command key and the comma key at the same time (Command+,).

2. Go to the Privacy tab.

3. Click the Remove All Website Data button to remove all stored website data, or skip to step 5 to remove data on a site-by-site basis.

4. Click Remove Now to confirm. Note, as Safari warns you, this could log you out of sites and perhaps also change how they function. For example, instead of getting tailored ads on the site, you'll be served generic ones.

5. To remove stored data by site, click the Details button.

6. Select the sites with stored data you want to remov e. Hold down the Command key to select multiple sites.

7. Click Remove.

8. Click Done.

Alternatively, you can click the Remove All button to delete all of the sites' cookies and stored data. Safari will ask you to confirm your choice:

Clear your history, cookies, and browsing data from Safari on your iPad or iPhone .

1. Open the Settings app and tap Safari.

2. Tap Clear History and Website Data. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier, the menu is slightly different: Tap "Clear History" and "Clear Cookies and Data".

3. Tap Clear to confirm.

4. Tap Advanced back in the Safari Settings window to clear other stored website data.

How can I quickly clear cookies for a specific site using Safari for Mac?

I know I can "Reset Safari". I know I can go to Cookies from Preferences and search for a site's cookies and delete those. But is there a faster/easier way to just clear cookies for one site (preferably one that I'm already navigated to)?

Clearing a Specific Cookie on Safari: Safari makes you do a little more mousework to get to the listing of cookies in the system, and you have to specify which you want to remove. To get started, go to the preferences menu, and open the “Security” Options. Partway down the page is a button labeled “Show Cookies.” Click this.

Once you have clicked the “Show Cookies” button, you will be shown a listing of all of the cookies your browser has stored, along with a handy search box. Type the current domain name into this search to see a listing of cookies set by the current site. From here, you can select and delete the cookies.

• 4 Safari 9 on El Capitan (OS X 10.11) no longer has this feature in the same place or the same way. Now you go to Safari / Preferences / Privacy and under the Remove All Website Data... button there's a small Details... button. When you click on that you can see the list of all domain names for which there are Cache, Cookies, and/or Local Storage saved. When you select that domain you can clear all of that data at once or not. There's no way to see individual cookies from Preferences any more, nor a way to remove only one. But at least you can still do this for a single site. –  user6297 Jan 20, 2016 at 12:21

As @user6297 says in his comment, the above answer no longer works as of El Capitan. You now need to go to Preferences > Privacy > Details as shown in the image. Note that the Details button might take a moment to appear.

Then enter the domain in the Search box, select the item you want to remove, and click Remove .

To clear all cookies, you can setup a keyboard shortcut (Option-Cmd-R) to Safari → Reset Safari

Clearing the cache on your iPhone or iPad is really easy, but that will log you out of every single website that you were previously logged into, and wipe any other cookie-based preferences.

Clearing the cache on your iPhone or iPad is really easy, but that will log you out of every single website that you were previously logged into, and wipe any other cookie-based preferences. So what if you want to just wipe cookies or cache for a single site?

Luckily that's also pretty easy... though not quite as simple since you'll have to dig through a list of all the sites you've ever visited or that have put cookies on your device.

You might be asking yourself why you'd bother doing this, and the answer is simple: if a particular site is misbehaving you can wipe the cache and cookies just for that site, login again, and sometimes the problem will be resolved.

First you'll want to open up the Settings app, and then find Safari on the left-hand side, and then scroll down until you see the Advanced on the right-hand side. If you're using an iPhone it won't display like this, but you'll be able to easily figure it out.

Now press the Website Data button.

And now push the Edit text button on the upper right-hand corner.

Now you'll see a list of the sites that have put cookies on your device. You'll probably need to expand to show all of the sites, and then browse down through the list. Once you've found the one you want to wipe, just hit the red minus icon and then press Delete, just like you would in most iOS apps.

There isn't a whole lot more to it.

Manage cookies in Microsoft Edge: View, allow, block, delete and use

Cookies are small pieces of data stored on your device by websites you visit. They serve various purposes, such as remembering login credentials, site preferences, and tracking user behavior. However, you might want to delete cookies for privacy reasons or to resolve browsing issues.

This article provides instructions on how to:

View all cookies

Allow all cookies.

Allow cookies from specific website

Block third party cookies

Block all cookies, block cookies from a specific site, delete all cookies, delete cookies from a specific site, delete cookies every time you close the browser, use cookies to preload the page for faster browsing.

Select  Settings   >  Cookies and site permissions .

Select Manage and delete cookies and site data > See all cookies and site data.

By allowing cookies, websites will be able to save and retrieve data on your browser, which can enhance your browsing experience by remembering your preferences and login information.

Select Manage and delete cookies and site data  and enable the toggle  Allow sites to save and read cookie data (recommended)  to allow all cookies.

Allow cookies from specific site

Select Manage and delete cookies and site data.

Navigate to Allow  section and select  Add  to allow cookies on a per-site basis by entering the site's URL.

If you don't want third party sites to store cookies on your PC, you can block cookies. But doing this might prevent some pages from displaying correctly, or you might get a message from a site letting you know that you need to allow cookies to view that site.

Select Manage and delete cookies and site data and enable  Block third party cookies.

Select Manage and delete cookies and site data  and disable Allow sites to save and read cookie data (recommended)  to block all cookies.

Microsoft Edge allows you to block cookies from a specific site however doing this might prevent some pages from displaying correctly, or you might get a message from a site letting you know that you need to allow cookies to view that site. To block cookies from a specific site:

Navigate to Block section and select  Add  to block cookies on a per-site basis by entering the site's URL.

Select  Settings   >  Privacy, search, and services .

Navigate to Clear browsing data section and select  Choose what to clear located next to  Clear browsing data now . 

Under Time range , choose a time range from the list.

Select Cookies and other site data , and then select Clear now .

Note:  Alternatively, you can delete the cookies by pressing  CTRL + SHIFT + DELETE together and then proceeding with the steps 4 and 5.

All your cookies and other site data will now be deleted for the time range you selected. This signs you out of most sites.

Open Edge browser, select Settings and more    > Settings   >  Cookies and site permissions .

Under Cookies and data stored , select  Manage and delete cookies and site data > See all cookies and site data and search for the site whose cookies you want to delete.

Select the down arrow    to the right of the site whose cookies you want to delete and select Delete  .

Cookies for the site you selected are now deleted. Repeat this step for any site whose cookies you want to delete. 

Open Edge browser, select  Settings and more    > Settings   > Privacy, search, and services .

Under Clear browsing data , select Choose what to clear every time you close the browser .

Turn on the Cookies and other site data toggle.

Once this feature is turned on, every time you close your Edge browser all cookies and other site data are deleted. This signs you out of most sites.

Enable the toggle Preload pages for faster browsing and searching.

Delete, allow and manage cookies in Chrome

You can choose to delete existing cookies, allow or block all cookies, and set preferences for certain websites.

Important: If you are part of the Tracking Protection test group, you will see a new Chrome setting for managing third-party cookies called "Tracking Protection." Learn more about Tracking Protection .

What cookies are

Cookies are files created by websites you visit. By saving information about your visit, they make your online experience easier. For example, sites can keep you signed in, remember your site preferences, and give you locally relevant content.

There are 2 types of cookies:

• First-party cookies: Created by the site you visit. The site is shown in the address bar.
• Third-party cookies: Created by other sites. A site you visit can embed content from other sites, for example images, ads, and text. Any of these other sites can save cookies and other data to personalize your experience.

Delete all cookies

Important: If you delete cookies, you might get signed out of sites that remember you, and your saved preferences could be deleted. This applies any time a cookie is deleted.

• On your computer, open Chrome.

• Tip: If you are part of the Tracking Protection test group, select Tracking Protection instead.
• To confirm, click Delete .

Delete specific cookies

• Click See all site data and permissions .
• At the top right, search for the website's name.

• At the top, next to "Time range," click the dropdown.
• Choose a time period, such as the last hour or the last day.
• Check Cookies and other site data .
• Uncheck all the other items.
• Click Clear data .

Change your cookie settings

Important: If you don't allow sites to save cookies, sites may not work as expected. To manage first-party cookies, learn more about on-device site data .

You can allow or block cookies for any site.

You can allow or block third-party cookies by default.

• Tip: If you are part of the Tracking Protection test group, follow the “Tracking Protection” instructions instead .
• Allow third-party cookies .
• Block third-party cookies in Incognito mode .
• If you block third-party cookies, all third-party cookies from other sites are blocked unless the site is allowed on your exceptions list.

If you block third-party cookies by default, you can still allow them for a certain site.

• Next to "Allowed to use third party cookies," click Add .
• To create an exception for an entire domain, insert [*.] before the domain name. For example, [*.]google.com will match drive.google.com and calendar.google.com .
• You can also put an IP address or a web address that doesn't start with http:// .
• Select Add .

• Once the page reloads, the address bar shows “Third-party cookies allowed,” “Third-party cookies blocked,” or “Third-party cookies limited” depending on your settings.
• This option is only temporary and only for the site you’re on.
• Sites get added to the exception list automatically .
• If you temporarily allow third-party cookies on a site, that setting carries over into Incognito mode and you can't reset it from Incognito mode.

To allow related sites to see your activity within the group:

• Select Block third-party cookies .
• Turn Allow related sites to see your activity in the group on or off.

To show related sites in the same group:

• Choose a site.

• If you are part of the Tracking Protection test group, select Tracking Protection instead.

Sites you visit can embed content from other sites, for example images, ads, text, and even features — like a text editor or weather widget. These other sites can ask for permission to use info they’ve saved about you (often saved using cookies) in order for their content to function properly.

For example, imagine you normally compose documents on docs.google.com . While completing a task for school, you need to collaborate with other students on your school’s class portal that offers direct access to Google Docs. With your permission:

• Google Docs can access its third-party cookies while you use your school’s site, allowing a connection between the site and Google Docs.
• This may allow Google Docs to verify who you are, find your info, and save changes you make to your documents on the site.

In some cases, this info can be used to track your activity as you browse sites. As a privacy feature, you can decide when to allow embedded content to access your data for sites you trust.

Tip: The connection uses cookies and lasts for 30 days or as long as you remain active. You can stop allowing the connection anytime in Settings .

To allow or decline permission

When you browse a site that displays a prompt requesting for permission for the embedded content to use information they’ve saved about you:

• Select Allow to give the site access to information they’ve saved about you (using cookies)
• Select Don’t allow to deny access
• To stop allowing access, learn how to manage site settings permissions.

Manage your tracking protections

When turned on, Tracking Protection significantly limits sites from using third-party cookies to track you as you browse, except for limited cases to allow basic services to function. If you choose to, you can block third-party cookies completely in your settings. You can manage your Tracking Protection preferences in your “Privacy and Security” settings.

• Block all third-party cookies: When you toggle this on, features on some sites may not work. Chrome blocks all third-party cookies from sites you visit, including related sites .
• Send “Do not track” request with your browsing traffic: When you toggle this on, you request that sites not track you. Sites use their discretion whether to comply with the request. Learn more about "Do Not Track" .
• Choose which sites you allow to use third-party cookies: You can also check and edit which sites you allow to use third party cookies under “Sites allowed to use third-party cookies.” Learn how to allow third-party cookies .

Blocking cookies from a particular site in Safari on iPad iOS 16.5

Is it possible to block cookies from particular sites in Safari? I didn't see such an option to do so, other than blocking all cookies. Similarly, Chrome on iPad lacks that feature, unlike Chrome on Windows. Thanks.

As I understand your question, you want to block specific websites from saving cookies and related website data, but you still want the websites to load and work normally. That's sort of a tall order, and I don't know of an app or Safari Extension that can do that.

I wonder if there is more to your question. Perhaps you simply want to use Private Browsing for those websites?

Browse privately in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

It will not prevent cookies from being stored temporarily (routine website navigation often requires it) but they will be purged along with all other website data upon exiting Private Browsing.

Thanks. Chrome on Windows allows you to black/whitelist specific sites to allow/disallow cookies. It doesn’t have that feature on iOS. It’s useful to get around cookies-based paywalls on various sites. I believe there’s a couple apps that may work for this.

Good value for money, all other places in Moscow were a lot more expensive. This hostel has a great location, but is located in the posh shopping street. Very hard to find, because it's located is a very small alley (which was during our stay being renovated). Dimitri, from reception, was helping us and was very friendly. He made us feel welcome and the atmosphere in the hostel was nice. Very nice living room with kitchen, where you can meet many people. There were a lot of solo travellers and in the evening many people to talk to. Dorms were fine, maybe a little small so you don't have a lot of space to place your luggage, but beds were fine and we slept there perfectly. Showers were hot, coffee and tea was for free and also free cookies! Don't expect luxury for this price, but if you are on a budget and looking for some people to talk to this is the place to go!

The only good comment about Safari Hostel is the location close to the Red Square and the availability of cooking. - Shower room was ridiculously small, and didn't have any shampoo nor shower gel. - When I already unpacked my luggage, the administrator asked me to change to another room they just disinfected (probably cockroach disinfection) and smelled terrible because of the chemical disinfection product. - Hostel website doesn't explain how to get there, and is quite difficult to find it, as it's in a dark alleyway. - Staff and administrator are unhelpful, just want you to pay for the room and didn't care about anything else. - I managed my visa invitation with this hostel and trusted it: I paid 1150 rubles for it, and never arrived. When I asked the administrator, he said they do it with a partner company, and don't take any responsability nor help you to solve it. Terrible experience: never come back.

• Cleanliness

It was not the best or the cleanest hostel I have ever stayed in but it was ok. There was always a line for the toilets and the showers. Also they could be cleaner, as far as I have seen they just have one cleaning lady and I have never seen her do anything other than drinking tea. But since I did not spend too much time in the hostel I can't say that she does not do anything. Also the receptionists do a lot of the cleaning around the kitchen. Actually the best part was the location. We went everywhere on foot, it is very near everything. It is located in an alley which is not very safe at night but it is ok if you are careful enough. And they are very helpful when you email them. Also be careful putting your food in your kitchen because people are not very respectful to the fact that it's someone else's food.

The experience was great and I liked mainly the location of the hostel (a walking distance to red square). The staffs are quite friendly too and the environment is calm in the lounge room. The unique negative point is that there isn't breakfast.

I liked everything about the hostel. It's in a perfect location, very clean and quiet (it was important for us after a night flight), with fully equipped kitchen and helpful staff. Plenty of WCs and showers. I recommend it without hesitation.
