Troubleshooting, how to install safari technology preview on mac.
Safari Technology Preview is an optional web browser for Mac that is separate from the regular Safari browser, with the Tech Preview offering an early look at upcoming web technologies and features before they become included in the primary Safari browser. In this way, Safari Tech Preview is kind of like Google’s Chrome Canary, and it’s worth a look for many users.
Many web developers and designers may benefit from checking out and using Safari Tech Preview on their Mac, but a lot of casual users may enjoy the experience as well. Plus, Safari Tech Preview can run alongside regular Safari, and has full iCloud feature access, so you’ll have access to all your bookmarks and favorites too.
How to Install Safari Tech Preview on Mac
- Go to https://developer.apple.com/safari/resources/ and locate “Safari Technology Preview”
- Choose the download for your particular version of macOS
- When finished downloading, go to your Downloads folder and mount the SafariTechnologyPreview.dmg file, then run the bundled installer
- Launch Safari Technology Preview from the /Applications folder, or through Spotlight, or Launchpad
The Safari Tech Preview icon is purple, whereas the standard Safari icon is blue.
Updates for Safari Tech Preview are offered through the regular Software Update mechanism, and if you like it enough you can set it to your default web browser as well.
Personally I like to use Safari Tech Preview for development and design work, but also as an alternate browser for when my primary Safari app is over utilized with too many open tabs and windows, but I’m not in a position to close those out for work or personal reasons. I also use Chrome and Firefox for similar purposes, but I typically fall back to Safari for performance reasons, and it’s nice to have two Safari options available.
Do you use Safari Technology Preview? Do you have a particular use case? Share your thoughts in the comments.

What you need to know
- Apple has released Safari Technology Preview 141.
- The latest version of the experimental browser features a number of bug fixes and performance improvements.
- The update is only for users running macOS Big Sur or macOS Monterey.
The latest version of Safari Technology Preview is here.
Today, Apple released Safari Technology Preview 141. The latest update includes the expected rounds of performance improvements and bug fixes for users who enjoy running the latest innovations that Apple's built-in browser for the Mac has to offer.
The latest version of Safari Technology Preview is an experimental version of Safari for users running a Mac that currently has macOS Big Sur or macOS Monterey installed. The preview allows developers and the generally curious to test out the latest and greatest features of Apple's browser and provide feedback to the company before the public version goes live for everyone at some point in the future.
The new update for the preview is available to users running macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur. Apple has noted in the release notes of Safari Technology Preview 141 that it has released a number of updates for:
- Web Inspector
- Experimental Model Element
- Payment Request
- Web Animations
- Content Security Policy
Apple has noted that Tab Groups, which were added to Safari when macOS Monterey launched last year, do not sync with this version of Safari Technology Preview.
If you want, you can download Safari Technology Preview and test it out for yourself. You can check out the release notes of Safari Technology Preview 139 on the Apple Developer website.
Bottom line: Professionals should open their wallets and purchase a 2021 MacBook Pro. All others might want to pause and consider last year's 13-inch model instead.

Release Notes for Safari Technology Preview 173
Jun 28, 2023
by Jen Simmons
Safari Technology Preview Release 173 is now available for download for macOS Sonoma beta and macOS Ventura. If you already have Safari Technology Preview installed, you can update it in System Settings under General → Software Update.
Many of the new Safari 17 features are now available in Safari Technology Preview 173:
Feature Flags is a new section of Safari Technology Preview Settings and replaces the Experimental Features section of the Develop menu. It allows you to search for specific features and to easily see features toggled from their default state in bold. Feature flags have a status such as Stable, Testable, Preview, or Developer, and are now organized by topic.
A redesigned Develop menu makes it easier to find the key tools available to help you create websites, web apps, web content inside other apps, web extensions, and more.
Responsive Design Mode has been refreshed to focus on the responsiveness of a page’s design at any width or height on your Mac. Specify viewport size at the top of Responsive Design Mode or drag the resize handles around the view, and easily jump into device simulators.
Profiles on macOS Sonoma help you keep your browsing data separated including History, favorites, Tab Groups and website data such as Notification subscriptions, cookies, caches, and service workers.
Web apps on macOS Sonoma allows you to add any website to your Dock with this release of Safari Technology Preview.
Improved Private Browsing on macOS Sonoma locks your Private Browsing windows when not in use and adds protection against many more of the advanced techniques used to track you.
Managed Media Source combines the best features of HTTP Live Streaming and Media Source Extensions into an easy to adopt power-efficient low-level toolkit for adaptive streaming.
JPEG XL support on macOS Sonoma adds a new image format with an improved compression algorithm for better image quality at smaller file sizes than JPEG, but with the same progressive loading capability.
HEIC adds support for the file format used on iPhone and iPad to store photos taken with the camera, allowing developers to support importing and editing photos right in the browser.
Live Text adds support for vertical text recognition in images and videos.
A redesigned text cursor on macOS Sonoma uses the system accent color and matches iOS behavior. You can still customize the color with the caret-color CSS property.
In addition to these new Safari 17 features, this release includes WebKit changes between: 264855@main…265377@main .

- iPhone 15 Plus
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 13 Mini
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 12 Mini
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone SE (ab der 2. Generation)

Safari 18 Features: Highlights, New Reader Mode, and Video Viewer
In macOS Sequoia , Apple has some additional features in Safari 18 that are likely to be welcomed by Mac users. Here's a quick rundown of what's new.
Highlights can be accessed via a new site menu icon that appears in the address bar, from which you can quickly pull up relevant information about a site, such as directions, summaries, or quick links to learn more about people, music, movies, and TV shows.
As of writing this, Highlights does not appear to work outside of the United States, so it is likely to be region-specific at this early state. However, there are other changes to Safari that are live wherever you are located.
If you click the button again, a dropdown menu lets you change the theme (white, off-white, gray, black) and choose your preferred font (Athelas, Charter, Georgia, Iowan, New York, Palatino, San Fransisco, Seravek, and Times New Roman).
In this menu, you can also find text size options by percentage (from 50% to 300%), as well as a "Find..." option to find a word or phrase on a page, and a button to Hide Reader mode.
Apple says that Reader can also provide a summary of an article, along with a table of contents in a sidebar, but we could not get this to work, likely because it is an aspect of Apple Intelligence , which will not be introduced until later in the year.
In other Safari-related changes, macOS Sequoia beta adds support for opening links directly in web apps. Now, when you click a link, that link should open in the web app instead of your default web browser. You can also now personalize web apps on Mac with Safari Web Extensions and Content Blockers.
Lastly, Safari 18 beta for iOS, iPadOS, visionOS , macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma brings inline predictive text to the web, and you can now set which Safari profile should be used to open particular websites.

People still use Safari? I tried it when i first had my Mac, but I could nto get on with it, then I tried it again a few weeks ago, but had problems with some sites not working, so I have gone back to Firefox.
Safari is still the second-most used browser. Far behind Chrome but also far ahead of Firefox. Of course, most of that is iOS/iPadOS. But even on the desktop, Safari is ahead of Firefox and Safari is not even available on Windows & Linux, unlike Firefox. So yeah... People still use FireFox? :D
No fixes to the messy interface? I have no idea where to find stuff anymore. Scattered around the share sheet, under the A button, the refresh button, the extensions menu, third party buttons, … And there are iCloud tabs, tab groups, profiles, tab group favorites, ….
