Best sustainable crossbody

lightweight shoulder bag travel

This everyday crossbody has been tested to hold up to 50 pounds—and while you're unlikely to ever fill it with that much weight, it's a comfort to know the strap is durable enough to fit all of your essentials plus a little extra. The bag features a zipper closure to keep your items secure and interior slip pockets for cards or your phone. What we love most: As with everything Rothy's, it's sustainably made and machine washable.

Best crush-proof bag

Image may contain: Cylinder, Tin, and Can

This crush-proof canister-style crossbody is meant to protect your essentials—like a favorite pair of sunglasses, a tube of hand sanitizer, or a fragile film camera you love to travel with—in a lightweight, streamlined design. The water-resistant interior will also keep everything dry, just in case. What we love most, though, is the chic, retro, monogrammable style—nobody will ever believe it's practical, too.

Best for hiking

lightweight shoulder bag travel

Whether you're hiking , biking, or heading out for a game of pickleball, this convenient and compact water bottle holder saves you the hassle of lugging around a heavy, full-size bag. My favorite feature is the insulated and water-resistant interior, but it also comes with multiple pockets, a detachable shoulder strap, and a drawstring closure—a nice touch when you're on the move. It's available in more than a dozen colors and fun patterns.

Best for holding your phone

lightweight shoulder bag travel

If you're looking for something that holds your ID, phone, and not much else, say for runs, hikes, or walking around a cruise ship, turn to this slim crossbody from Béis. It's available in the brand's signature beige and black.

Best for parents

lightweight shoulder bag travel

MZ Wallace designs some of our top editor-recommended sling bags and duffels . We equally love this lightweight, diamond-quilted crossbody bag that's ideal for busy parents or travelers on the move who need something reliable. There's an exterior zippered pocket for easy access to items like your phone or wallet, and the bag is water-resistant and washable.

Travel Tip:

Sometimes, the safest place for your passport is in the guesthouse reception’s safe or a hostel locker. Avoid bringing everything out with you; keep only the minimal cash you need for the day in your purse and stash the rest in your underwear using these theft-proof items .

Learn more about how to keep your passport safe when you travel.

Please note: In areas where bag snatching is very common, like parts of Malaysia and Thailand, wearing your purse across your body won’t necessarily protect you. However, if you prefer to wear shoulder bags versus daypacks or backpacks, cross body purses are the recommended choice for travel.

I took the travelon mini crossbody on my Rhine River cruise. It was the perfect size for pour excursions.

JoAnn DeYonker

FYI to readers – The clip on hardware on the strap on my Bagallini bag broke. Company replaced it for free…arrived in a few days!

Elizabeth Tapia

I am really please with my Pacsafe Go Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag. It holds a lot more than one would think when you first open it. I just took it to Mexico City and San Jose del Cabo and felt secure with it across my front.

Amy Hoffman

I took a Baggallini daypack with RFID protection, inner-facing pocket for holding cards and cash, and locking clasps on a 3-week trip to Europe in June. It. Was. Amazing. It was lightweight, stayed in place, had lots of pockets, and even space for 2 water bottles. Honestly, I was really surprised by how much I liked it, and almost 3 months later, it’s still the purse I’m using every day. I definitely think it deserves to be added to this list! 🙂

Francine

I have a small Vera bag I love. It’s very light. I have carry a small Vera backpack.

Kay

On TFG Facebook advice, I purchased a 5L Lululemon All Night Festival bag for a cruise to Alaska in May. I thought I would only use it for travel. But I use it all the time now. It holds so much…quite deceiving.

Amy C

I LOVE the Travelon Mini Shoulder Bag! I’ve used it both for domestic and international trips. While not big enough for a water bottle, it holds a lot. I easily carry glasses, sunglasses, kleenex, snacks, mini toiletries, phone, charger, passport, and more. Plus I can use the locking clip to attach a hat or additional lightweight bag. My favorite feature is the small clip that’s sewn into the bag. I attach my wallet to with a key ring for extra security.

Barbara Martin

The smaller bags are ideal for me…. My phone, my hotel card key or key, a credit card and a comb. Thanks!

Christina Kellmann

I use the small packable Longchamp crossbody and can easily throw it in a larger tote. I keep the smaller bag packed so I don’t have to re-pack it! Works great traveling and also at home.

Ellen Renfrew

I would have never known about Travelon purses without this post. I personally love the Travelon North/South Classic Crossbody. A little smaller than the original crossbody but it does the trick. Gives me the safety and security I want and looks fashionable too!

Celeste Riley

Purchased a travelon bag after reading this post! Can’t wait to use in my trip to the Christmas markets!

Amanda B.

I just purchased the Travelon Anti-Theft Messenger Bag and will be trying it out next week on my travels to Malta. While I am not too concerned about pickpockets there as I was in Italy, it will be nice to have to feel a little more secure. The added bonus is the pcket you can unzip to hold a water bottled. I took my Baggallini crossbody last year and that was definitely a feature I missed. I appreciated all the tips on the blog to make my decision.

Patricia Thum

I love the Travelon cross body purses. It’s been my go to for international travel. Great summary of the different options out there!

Christine Shubin

Love my Lululemon Festival bag! It’s my everyday purse here at home and makes a great travel bag! It was easy to buy a security lock to lock it as needed for travel too and I love how the top zips and then folds over. For someone to get into it, they’d have to manage a curved zipper (2 hands, raise the flap and open the flap and then reach way down inside to get anything. Anyway, its a great crossbody bag!

Linda M Burklin

I LOVE cross-body bags but was surprised not to see the Sash bag featured in this blog post. I am so sold on Sash that I have six bags in four different sizes. Pockets for everything, and the weight is distributed so well that I don’t even notice I’m wearing it. I can wear it all day without ever getting tired. No need to remove it when using a public restroom. Now I look at other bags and no matter how cute they are, I realize I’m not willing to use anything but Sash.

Rachel Heizer

I bought a Travelon Crossbody bag for my trip to Europe last summer. It was a great purchase, and I felt safe and comfortable and stylish at the same time. Win-win!

Shari Poteet

Thanks for doing the research and sharing these amazing bags.

Kerry

I’m planning to use my Sash bag, but worn under my clothes when I feel vulnerable. I’m leaving for three weeks in Europe fooled by a Mediterranean cruise and then a visit to a friend on the East coast. My trips to Oaxaca and Cuba I used my Quince fanny pack in neoprene and a Fossil one in leather. I wore them crossbody and they v were great but bI had to rifle around a lot. I think I may take at least one as backup and want to look at your Compass Rose bra wallet as well!

Lisa D.

The Travelom convertible backpack worked great in France. I word as a crossover when I was on the metro and more crowded areas. And I wore it as a backpack when I needed to give my shoulders a break.

Rachel Rautmann

Thanks for all of the great ideas!

Barb

I took the Travelon 2 pocket to Italy last year and it was perfect. It held everything I needed it to, and it was the perfect size to keep me from trying to haul too much junk around. 10 out of 10 would recommend!

Cheryl Kelley

I just brought the Travelon EW Crossbody to London. Worked great. We were going to be on the underground every day, so I love that the zippers all lock & that the strap is anti-slash.

I’ve been debating size of a crossbody day bag for ages. I want something big enough to hold a bottle of water and a snack, wallet, sunglasses, etc without being too heavy. Will have to go checknout some options in person.

Marcie Green

I traveled for a week in Paris with the Travelon Classic bucket bag. It was perfect! It held everything, including a packable rain jacket. It was appropriate for every venue, even museums, and the locking zippers and knife resistant straps and body made me feel secure. I recommend to everyone I know who is traveling!

Brenda

When I need something important for travel, Travel Fashion Girl has the best options to choose from. It can make my day.

Cynthia Halpin Brown

used the Travelon messenger back for a month of travel in Europe. Very happy with my decision. Didn’t think I would use both side pockets but using one for a water bottle and the other for an umbrella or sun hat worked well and left the main compartment for other items.

We are going to Italy at the end of this month and all your blogs/posts and your guidebook have been so helpful in our planning. Thank you and Happy 10th Anniversary!

Sheila W

I like going with a smaller cross body like the Travelon Convertible Crossbody. But if I know I will be buying items or responsible for family items, I go with the Travelon Classic Bucket Bag. Both are excellent choices for travel.

Candace Knezevic

So many choices

Lane Toring

I purchased one at Target for my Paris trip. I loved it and it was very reasonably priced! It was $30! It’s the perfect size and tbh it beats my Louis and my Lululemon one. It isn’t the most fashionable as it is a basic black crossbody. However, it does the job and does it very well. It’s nice there are a variety of sizes and these are becoming more fashionable! I love this group!!!

Karen Oreskovich

I know! Saved this to my ever-growing idea list for future travel adventures!

Susan Grant

I travel with a Pacsafe crossbody bag and my husband has a Pacsafe backpack, both are great and we feel safe using them. I have travelled extensively and never had any issues with theft.

CJ Woods

I LOVE my Rebecca Minkoff Julian backpack! It fits a ton of stuff making it the perfect carry on “personal item”.

Chastity Hinkle

I love all the Travelon Heritage bags. Taking on with me to Ireland in a few weeks!!

DJ Shanks

So many beautiful choices! I have used a Lug crossbody, light weight and worked well, but not as stylish as some of these choices, look forward to giving some a try!

Lindsey Pullen

I love Baggalini and Michael Kors crossbody purses for travel and everyday. Great blog post!

Glenda Sims

Have loved my Bagallini Avenue for this current trip to Europe.

Alicia

I love my Rebecca Minkoff backpack style bag which you posted and the amount of cross body styles to choose from are great, there’s casual and some that can be great for a night out and more fashionable. Love your blog and all your tips and it gives me ideas for possibly travel destinations! Now only if the airfare prices would drop a little!

Amy

So many great options! My favorite is the Travelon Hobo Bag.

Mary Slemmer

I’m thankful to this blog and group … I’m a faithful fan of travelon for all my trips now!

Rosalyn Reed

Crossbody bags are such a blessing! Please don’t save these only for travel. I use mine daily as personal safety is extremely important to me. I use a Vera Bradley utility as a purse & a small RFID wristlet as a bra stash. The strap on the wristlet keeps it securely attached to the side of my bra. Yes, my extra money is safely held within the high sides of my bra! Last fact, for purses without a lockable zipper pull, use a simple key ring loop. It will attach the zipper to the purse strap to prevent prying hands from opening your purse.

Maria Manetas

I love Travelon bags for travel but have recently used the Lululemon belt bag and find it comfortable and easy to wear.

Carla H

I love this post. Crossbody purses are my choice for everyday and travel.

Laura Packard

I love my Travelon crossbody purse! I can shove it into my Bento bag and it easily fits, and doesn’t get scuffed up at the seams. I killed several prior handbags this way.

Becky Reeves

Love the Travelon crossbody purses! Can’t wait to try one.

Heather

I have been using the Pacsafe CS100 for years, and love it for international travel. But now I have my eye on the Madewell transport leather bag you mentioned- it’s gorgeous!

Gale Penhall

Baggaetelli is my favorite. Lots of styles. They are light and I use them travelling and all year round as my walking purse. But I have to say you got me interested in the Longchamp! 🙂

Micheline

I have used Baggallini purses for travel for years as well as a couple of small leather purses. I used RFID blocking passport pouches and tiny locking s-biners to add additional protection. You can never go wrong with a Le Pliage and I have one packed at all times. Great article!

I love crossbody bags and would love to be able to wear them (not just traveling, but for everyday as well). However, I am large chested so it normally looks funny on me (the strap cuts into the body). For my most recent travel to Europe, I opted for a money belt instead.

You and me, both. I often check a bag for a SPECIAL feature – a removable strap. Years ago, I found a small crossbody with a long, removable, nylon strap. I use this strap on any new bag (even if I must cut or otherwise remove the original strap). I am able to personalize any bag to fit ME!

Kim Engel

I love the PacSafe purses. I have 4 different crossbody purses from them…thanks for sharing so many other options.

Michelle

Thanks for this great review!

Beth Crosby

I love my Travelon Bucket crossbody bag. It fits everything I need for the day including my Kindle which I rarely leave without!

Beth

I have the Travelon Bucket crossbody and love it. It holds everything I need for the day (including my Kindle)!

Cheryl Wark

I love reading all the helpful info on travel and accessories. I also love reading of Alexis’s adventures. And Jade is just adorable. I look forward to many more interesting blogs on travel.

What is the best crossbody travelon purse to stuff into a carry on?

Alex

Hi Mary, the bestseller year after year with our readers is the Anti-Theft Classic Messenger Bag: https://amzn.to/3A6ctuU

Love the crossbody bag trend.

AMY SATTERFIELD

I love my Travelon mini cross-body. It fits nicely into my Personal item Ogio Backpack when I’m consolidating before boarding. I love this Blog, too.

Lynette lazenby

Headed to Europe for a month. Bought the Travelon messenger bag. I already feel safe(r) from pickpockets. It has exactly the room I need. Even convinced hubby to get a secure waist belt to hold his valuables. Don’t want our trip to me marred by theft.

Ellen

Great review. I do like the Travelon bags too. I have several styles depending on my needs!

Kareece Zane

Travelon 3-Compartment Crossbody love this crossbody bag. It is my go to evertime I travel abroad. I feel safe that everything in my bad is protected from pick pockets and the 3 compartments can hold quite a lot of my oersonal items.

Lisa Chappell

I love the security and comfort of rfid travel bags and purses but I fear the pickpockets know to look for these-perhaps can easily spot a tourist with good stuff inside! I love this article since you’ve included purses that aren’t designed for tourists. They’re gorgeous. Thank you for creating the TFG community!! Makes me want to start planning a trip! .

Vicki Thompson

Love all these suggestions!!!

Deborah

It’s important for me that my travel bag be lightweight and that the strap not cut into my shoulder. I love my Baggalini crossbody bag!

Stacey

Bought and used Travelon 3 compartment cross body. It’s is incredibly functional and I was NOT pickpocketed in Europe. Just be careful not to overload it, or it will get heavy to carry all day!

Margaret Goodwin

Such a helpful and fabulous post.

Michele Stanton

I love this blog and the Facebook group. These purse suggestions are perfect!

Anna Dalla Zanna

I love crossbody bags! Thanks for this post, I may have to do more shopping! I’m so glad I found this FB group, I’ve learned so much!

Mel E

I have the travel safe crossbody slim. I love it! It’s great as a sneaky extra personal time on the plane for all your essentials. It easily fits in the plane pocket as well.

Carla Fritz

Love all the valuable info all travel . It’s been a huge help planning our Italy trip!!

Cassidy

I prefer the smaller cross body bags that can double as a fanny pack too. Any recommendations? I have never seen a locking one but that would be great.

Hi Cassidy, we do have some reader recommendations for purses here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/convertible-backpack-purse/

Lisa

Found my favorite one at Walmart!

Pamela Marvin

I am always looking for the best fashionable bag for travel. Thanks for sharing.

Maria

This is all so helpful! You’ve saved me hours of research and your sense of style is lovely and timeless. Thank you!

Laura Moore

I bought the Rebecca minkhoff backpack and the hammitt crossbody for my recent trip to Europe and they were both perfect. I used the backpack for my everyday and it was roomie enough to carry anything I would want. I could put a water bottle, roll up a sweater, and it still had room! The crossbody was cute and stylish for a night out but not flashy! Loved both of these suggestions!

Marta

I’ve used the Travelon 3-Compartment Crossbody purse on my recent trip to UK and Ireland and it was great. Light enough not to be heavy, fit a water bottle, can fit more if needed to stuff a small souvenir or something. The straps are quite heavy though and stiff, because of the wire inside, so it may be an issue if somebody is wearing sleeveless tops or dresses. I had sleeves on all tops this trip though and it was fine.

Susan

This post is just what I needed. I have bought and returned a couple of bags for a trip to South Africa. I just found out that my favorite cross-body bag by Tumi comes in a new neutral color, Zinc: https://www.tumi.com/p/ruma-crossbody-0109993E517/ .

Rebecca Minkoff Julian Backpack has changed my travel life. I use it to carry all my “must haves at my seat” items. Stylishly dividing the weight of my belongings instead of on one shoulder is just an amazingly simple solution.

Megan K

I like my Tim Bihn Icon bag—lightweight, zipper closures (not lockable, though). The strap is adjustable and the excess is stored inside so ir doesn’t flap around.

Oops, *Tom* Bihn

Thanks for a chance to win

Allison

My new Travelon Classic Messenger Bag just arrived from Amazon today! It’s smaller than I expected, which is great, because I thought that as a “messenger” bag, it would be the same size as one of my Timbuktus. So excited to try it out! Thanks for the rec!

Jeanie Kimber

I always feel safer traveling with a Travelon bag! Once in NYC, I looked down at my regular crossbody to see a woman’s hand in my purse. She removed it and scowled at me! I since always use a Travelon lockable bag!

Cynthia Ruddle

I love that you have included affordable bags for travel. Travelon is my go to handbag.

Darliss Bardwell

Thanks for the wonderful product recommendations. I hate carrying lots of things so just have a cross body bag slightly bigger than my kindle ordered from Etsy. It worked well in Thailand and Mexico. It has a cloth strap which could probable be easily sliced but it stays clasped under my arm when we walk through lots of people.

Melissa Simpson

I am an MZ Wallace and Hammitt girl all the way. Didn’t know there were so many anti-theft bags. Having been to 90+ countries I am taking your advice. Brilliant blog!

Diane Laney

I’m on my second Travelon bag because of recommendations from your site. I just bought the Travelon Mini Shoulder Bag for my next trip. Can’t wait to get it!!

Jeni

I’m still looking for the perfect camera style bag with an outside phone picket. It needs to be at least 2.5″ wide & not nylon. Ideas?

Hi Jeni, if you’re looking for a bag for your camera we have a range of reader recommendations right here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-camera-bag-for-women/

Hope this helps you in your search. Have a brilliant time on all your travels!

Chantal Van Strydonck

The Rebecca Minkoff Julian backpack is my absolute favorite. I bought it after reading your review for my trip to Egypt and I just can’t let it go since. it’s been four years !!!

Rosemary Thompson

Hello, my favourite travel bag too is the Rebecca Minkoff Julian Leather backpack, I have it in a beautiful dark green leather and received compliments while travelling to Europe 2019 for British Open Golf in Northern Ireland, and off th Paris to meet friends and a train ride with them to Antwerp Belgium. Perfect for planes and trains and travelling in boats for sight seeing and walking. It is so comfortable, hands free and easy to organize, fits comfortably too. I also have one of the small zip black leather cross body too – perfect for running errands and of course dog walking my Golden while at home. Rebecca Minkoff styles are just right, beautiful durable leathers, creative design, functional, practical and ease of use. Cheers Rosemary read your info on the backpack for travel and bought it. Brings me joy and comfort.

Stephanie

This is a great article! I always stress about which purse to bring when I travel bc I love purses and I’m a bit of a purse snob lol. I love the Rebecca Minkoff backpack and the MZ Wallace bag. I aspire to pack light like you do!

Pam

I really appreciate this post! I found three that I am thinking very seriously about!

Tanya

I got the Travelon messenger bag on your recommendation. I’m so excited to try it out in Buenos Aires.

Tamara

I have gone from carrying an enormous bag to the smallest one possible since I started following you

Melissa Daugherty

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I love my baggalini bags as well as my Haiku stride crossbody.

Corene Phillips

I love the travelon messenger bag; it is the perfect size for me and holds a lot with out being too big

Colleen

Crossbody bags are the best, for travel and EDC. Thanks for this detailed post!

Georgia

My Baggalini purse is one of the best travel purchases that I have made.

Jen

This post, and all of the posts, are so helpful. Currently searching for “the one” in a crossbody bag and love being able to browse through the options here. So glad I found this blog and the fb group! ✨🗺

Karen Talcott

Travelon purses are the best! I went on a 14 day Rick Steeves Europe trip and the shoulder bag was my savior. It had a locked front pouch where I kept my lip balm, advil ect. The middle section held my room key, my metro tickets, and valuables, and the back section that was closest to my hip help my Visa, covid card and also I could put my umbrella or a small sweater in there. Also snacks fit this compartment. On the side it held my water bottle and the other side pocket was perfect for the microphone pack that we used to hear our guide. It was never too heavy and was perfectly safe on metros and large crowds. The black was the perfect color to go with everything. I am normally a crossbody gal and this was the perfect size that wasn’t too big to get questioned in museums and go quickly through the scanners. Thank you for your list of crossbody bags. It began my search for the bags which I found on Amazon. Love your lifestyle tips-they really help!

Anne

Absolutely love my Travelon crossbody. I feel secure with it across my body.

Shanna P

Love all these great options. I love a crossbody, free hands and I can easily keep and eye on my belongings.

Amy terral

I love my Travelon purses! I feel safe and secure in the event I have to take my hand off of my crossbody or waist bag

Maria

Cross body purses for the win!

Debra Cox

I love all of these choices. I’ve been trying to decide on a Travelon bag for months but still haven’t made up my mind. I may switch to a convertible bag. Those look so versatile!

Andi

Thanks for all of the recommendations! My Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag should be arriving today.

Carolina

Le Pliage Cuir Leather Shoulder Bag is my go to when I am home running errands or when traveling, with a casual dress or someting more dressy. The quaility is excellent, and it cleans really well inside for when you have those “accidental” spills. Can’t go wrong with this one!

Dee

These Baggalini travel purses are such a good idea! I have three and enjoy traveling with the one that has two cup holders the most so I can choose between water or a delicious warm or cold beverage. The inside organizational pockets are so helpful that I want to use the purses while at home to shop and go on daily excursions.

Wendi L.

I used the Pacsafe backpack and Tumi Voyager crossbody last month in Europe. Love these bags along with Longchamp. Classic bags that will never go out of style.

Cynthia Griffith

Happy ten year anniversary Alex! TFG has helped me travel lighter & smarter but also the community has helped me get out travel more in everyday. Y’all are fabulous!!

Tammy

Anything Pacsafe I love, no matter what country I am in, I do not get bothered. People see the Pacsafe logo and don’t even attempt to steal my belongings. The durability is remarkable too, with my Metrosafe LS200 Shoulder Bag and LS450 backpack still in great shape after being borrowed by everyone in the family (more than once).

Mariefe

Love using a cross body bag since the weight doesn’t hurt my shoulders. Thank you for showing me all my options.

Janet

Finding the perfect cross body bag is essential for every day AND travel! Thank you so much for all these wonderful suggestions. I’m on the hunt!

Kris

Thank you for all the suggestions! I’m planning a trip next year to Israel. Reading the posts and looking up suggestions for various travel items has been so valuable. I’m narrowing down choices for many items including crossbody bag that I can also use as a daypack.

Jean Ternan

Love your blog, this was the perfect blog on crossbody purses as there are so many choices. This has been very helpful to see the various options and to help figure out what is best for me.

Kimberly

After years reading TFG I bought the Minkoff Julian Mini last year. I lose interest in most of my bags after a few trips as they reveal their flaws. But the Mini is now a staple because of all the strap options and its ability to slide in and out of my personal item easily.

Lori Jean

So many great suggestions here-the idea of selecting a bag made of nylon makes so much sense to reduce the weight burden on my shoulders. I also like the idea that nylon handbags can be washed is the age of the pandemic!

Rebecca Chesterman

I got the Travelon classic bucket bag before my first overseas trip about 3 years ago and it was perfect. It holds a ton but still allows me to find everything I need quickly. It also works great as an everyday purse at home, and I love the bright contrast lining (mine is gray with coral lining). Highly recommend!

Janna Deskins

I love have you give options for different items, you are such a great resource for travel. Thank you!

Donna DiMeo-Hammell

Alex, the advice I’ve received here from you and the Travel Fashion Girls has been invaluable! I just bought a small Travelon cross-body bag, and it’s amazing how much that little thing holds! I’m headed to Lisbon soon, which is notorious for pickpockets, but I feel protected. But aside from all the good advice and packing tips, this page is just so much fun! Thanks, ladies! See you at the airport!!

Elissa Dodge

I got the Travelon Classic Messenger Bag based off this post and I LOVE it!! My husband even had to wear it around when I was in the hospital and felt comfortable wearing it as a man.

Sonya Simons

Your information is so helpful. I picked the Classic Travelon cross body bag for our trip to Italy and cruise to Greece and Israel. It worked wonderfully I felt so secure with all my belongings and the side water bottle holders became very handy.

Kim Poole

The Travelon Classic Bucket Bag is my favorite. I use it all the time. Not just for travel.

Rose Trasatti

Alex – Your blogs are so inspirational. What an amazing group of women you have brought together with your Travel Fashion Girl forum.

I love my Baggallini!!

Tiffany Robinson

I love the pacsafe city line. They are super cute and don’t scream ‘travel purse.’

Linda Errath-Allen

Hello Alex and all the fabulous women in this group! I traveled to Italy in May 2022 and wanted to find a cross body purse for daily travel use. Many great ideas led me to the Baggallini Pocket Crossbody with RFID. It was the perfect purse!!

Linda

Cross body purses are simply the best for traveling. No bulkiness, heaviness and very safe from theft.

Donna Castellano

Wow! So many to choose from! Thank you for providing a great selection of crossbody bags.

Stacey

I love my Baggalini Avenue Tote – not just for travel by for everyday. I especially love the contest lining. Makes it so much easier to see what’s in my bag. I wish more bags would have contrast lining!

Valerie H

Thank you for these great suggestions. I used the Travelon slim crossbody purse for my last trip to Italy and Spain. It was the perfect size!

Doretta Annis

Bought the travelon bucket bag for my trip to Italy based on your recommendation and loved it

Kathleen

I love the travelon shoulder bag. I have used it for three trips to Europe and it still looks as good as new. Versatile and even fits a fine travel umbrella. Taking it to Italy next month!

Ari

Happy Anniversary

S Ramm

Love the Tumi bags

Linda Warner

I have been using Travelon bags for years and have never been disappointed, but I might have to check out some of these as well!

Connie Qualey

Hi Alex, and everyone else on here, I guess I must be chatty today! Sorry about that part, but kind of feel compelled to add here and there. I am retired military and have been to places most people never see. Fashion is marvelous….but some places require a bit more “ understated” looks. The idea is NOT to stand out too much. Much safer that way. While I’m here, I’d like to ask everyone if they can recommend a soft ( zip style) short boot for travel? I’m looking for something with the ability to fold-up a bit, stay dry, and ( please?) be at least very low-heeled. Even handmade is not out of the question. Ideas…please let me know. Thanks to all, Connie

Hi Alex, I would love to see everyone able to add photos of some of these things. Plus, would like to see other people’s choices on wardrobes for say 2-week trips? I think comparing notes on what works and maybe what doesn’t would be fun. But perhaps you do that on the blog I can’t get in to.? Thanks, Connie

Jess

Why is the bag in the cover photo for the article not listed in the article? I love that bag and would love to know where I can get it.

Hi Jess, this is the cross body purse shown in the main article image: http://amzn.to/29boOjZ Happy travels! ?

Kim

Baggallini has the BEST travel bags!!! They have an anti-theft collection, too.

Hi Kim, thank you for sharing your favorite brand for purses with us! Baggallini is very popular amongst many of our readers, you can read our review of them here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/baggallini-everywhere-bag/ Happy travels! ?

Kim, Did you ever try the older ones? I liked them much better than the ones now. The pockets were better organized, better fabrics, and a lot less heavy hardware. The Everywhere bag and the small wallet with a strap were perfect for travel. Not so much now. Connie

Laura

I was hoping to see more Lug brand bags. With their various convertible style options, fun & colorful prints, and quality, they have been the best bags for travel & everyday!

Hi Laura, thank you for sharing your recommendation of Lug brand with us! 🙂

Juillet

What’s the style name of the burberry purse on the cover? I love crossbody bags when I travel. This purse looks really cute and fashionable. 🙂

Hi Juillet, it is the Komal’s Passion Leather Leather Purse Satchel, and is available here: https://www.amazon.com/Komals-Passion-Leather-Purse-Satchel/dp/B00G1VLLWS/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1466732065&sr=8-12&keywords=crossbody+satchel&linkCode=sl1&tag=tfg-fashion-crosspurses-20&linkId=adab0cca00f4ed45241d086d4353fd37 Hope this helps! Happy travels 🙂

Bonita

Burberry bag….not the Komals purse. Where can I find that?

Julia (the one in BC)

I love leather, but when I’m travelling, I don’t need the extra weight that comes with leather. Give me synthetics that are easily cleaned.

My favourite cross-body travel bag isn’t mentioned here. It’s the Ameribag, a.k.a. the Healthy Back Bag. It’s very sturdily made, it’s ambidextrous (can be slung and accessed from either right or left), it’s comfortable to wear in a number of ways, it’s machine-washable (depending on the model – mine is the Distressed Nylon), and you can get it in various sizes and colours. Plus, the bag is soft and flexible enough to be collapsed and folded/rolled up when needed.

My only modification is to add an SOI bag light so I can easily see what’s in there – it fits perfectly into the clear inner pocket so that it stays put while illuminating the contents of my bag.

Lara

Love my Hammitt!

Janelle

New fan of the Hammitt! So glad I found it here on TFG!!

Clariza

Pacsafe is my go to bag maker for travel. Would not recommend anything with thin straps as too easy to cut and will dig into your shoulder. I always carry my rental’s house keys in my pocket so if I lose it or my bag gets stolen I can still get inside my rental.

Heather

I just got the Henri Bendel Jetsetter (full size) for an upcoming trip, I must say the bag’s versatility is impressive and it’s beautiful!!! I can’t wait to use it!!

Tamara

I looked at that but it can be unsnapped from behind. I elected to not get it for travel.

Melissa

I like some of these bags especially the Fascino but I do not travel light. I prefer to use the Von Baer Seduction Women’s Leather Briefcase because it has a removable and adjustable strap. It can also be used for work and casual outings.

alex

Good suggestion, thanks Melissa!

Susan

I love my Travelon’s Classic Messenger Bag. I’ve used it twice on European trips. Love that I can carry my umbrella and a water bottle.

Amy

Well, I must admit that I love the crossbody / shoulder bags more too. Threre are always tons of items I need to carry, Perfect for me as I’m mother of 2 children (1 and 5yo) and we all know that it is impossible to pack yourself into small clutch with this all additional kids stuf. Im looking for something for myself – a nice and big shoulder bag like mentioned here http://thewomansbag.com/cross-body-and-shoulder-bag/ would be perfect but didn’t decided yet.

Just wondered if you’ve looked at Patagonia’s Lightweight Courier bags? I think they have a diaper bag as well. I carry this one because it’s soft and flexible nylon and washable. Two front zip pocket, plus one interior, and very roomy. I think it’ll carry up to 15L of stuff on the inside, and I make up for pocket lack by using eagle creek’s ultra light ( and small) packing cubes in different colors. But the whole think is extremely light. Which helps if you are older, like me. IMHO…the lighter the better! And mine’s black, so matches my Ultralight Tortuga Air backpack. This combo works well for me….even with major back issues. Connie

Linda

I’ve traveled extensively and, honestly, I would never use most of these suggested bags with the exception of the PacSafe and Travelon. The bags must have security features like wire lined straps, hook latches, scan-protected pouches, etc. It’s fine to use a crossbody as long as you have the right strap that can’t be easily cut and place your hand across the bag at all times and inside your coat or sweater when in public places. Never ever consider using a backpack. It’s a sure fire way of getting ripped off….

Sivanny

Just to offer an alternative point of view, I’ve always stayed away from wire-lined steaks because I feel they are more dangerous. If someone attempts to cut your bag off you quickly, you are more likely to get injured (either cut by the knife or dragged out into the street) if there’s wire in the strap.

I’d rather lose some cash and cancel some credit cards than try to navigate hospitals in a country where you don’t know the language.

I do agree about zippers and hook latches, though. I love Baggallini bags because they have wristlets/wallets that are actually attached to the inside of the purse. So even if I get distracted and forget to zip it up, a pick-pocket can’t quietly take it.

oops! I meant straps, not steaks 🙂

I too liked Ameribag! At the time I bought it, was living in the same town where they made them! The one I have reminds me more of a backpack because it has a strap to wrap around the waist! So I guess if they try to snatch it, they’ll be getting me as well! I guess there’s something to be said for looking like a camper. Not high fashion, but probably safer. One reason I wear jeans wherever I can, or even ( gasp!) cargo pants. Connie

Good insight!

Hi Alex, Just got back from two weeks in Hawaii and Maui. Great trip and with a rather magical “ Whale Party” at the end. 200 or more whales in the strait between Maui and Lanai….all jumping, flapping tails, and generally having fun! All at the same time! Meanwhile, I have apparently NOT grasped the full “ lightweight travel” methods!!! My tiny Tortuga backpack weighed 25 pounds!!! Yikes….any suggestions??? I am embarrassed? Connie Q

Hi Connie, so pleased you had such an amazing trip. Sounds incredible!!! ?

Have a look at these articles for tips for how to reduce the weight of your luggage: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/luggage-weight/ and https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/baggage-allowance-how-to-pack/ Hope this helps!

Linda Bibb

I’m a crossbody bag fan for sure, because I really like having my hands free. That said, there are times my shoulders begin to beg for a little relief. I’m seriously considering the Henri Bendel Jetsetter Convertible Backpack for my upcoming trip through the Czech Republic, because it can be worn so many ways…and I won’t have to transfer the contents from bag to bag!

Travel Fashion Girl

Hi Linda 🙂 I understand what you mean about shoulder relief. Comfort is so important 🙂 This bag sounds great!

Beth

I love my Henri Bendel Jetsetter Convertible Backpack! I have the larger and smaller bag. I used the larger one during my trip to Amesterdam and Paris. It was large enough for a rain jacket, light sweatshirt, water bottle, and my normal purse items (sun glasses, wallet, etc.). The bag was definitely full but I was out all day and the temperature changed greatly from morning to night. It was nice having everything I needed to stay comfortable. A few museums made you leave larger bags at the bag check and they seemed to only ask people with backpacks to check their bags. I loved the ability to quickly change the backpack to a handbag and bring it into museums. I hate leaving my personal belongings in the care of someone else. I highly recommend them!

alex

Thanks so much for sharing this Beth! Sounds like an awesome trip and great tip about having to check your bag! Happy future travels!

Lily

Hi! Im travelling soon to Italy for two weeks, where I’ll be packing a carry on suitcase only (a shared one on top of it)! I’ll be travelling between cities by train, and was wondering if anyone thinks its a good idea to use a small backpack for travel, while using a cross body bag for walking in cities. I’m wondering if its even necessary?!

Love this blog!

This sounds like an awesome trip 🙂 It’s more of a personal preference whether you want to take a backpack or not…This article on choosing between a purse and backpack may help http://bit.ly/29qMF0o , and this one for some ideas for cute backpacks 🙂 http://bit.ly/29vhos5

Lori

I love cross-body bags. They are maybe more theft-proof, but they also stay securely on my shoulder where others do not. However, at 4′ 11″ it’s not easy to find cute designs that don’t hang down to my knees!

It’s best to find ones with adjustable straps to make sure you can get it to the length desires. Alternatively, take it to a local shoe repair shop and they can usually fix the length.

Linda

Timbuk2 crossbody is the best.

Franny

This is the best crossbody/shoulder bag ever! I got it for a trip to disneyworld as I needed a day bag that could be plane carry-on and suitable for theme park that was big enough to hold my bits plus stuff for my 3 yr old. But didn’t feel like I was dragging round a body bag. This was perfect! Tardis holding capacity! Loads of safety zips. But I found 2 big bonuses….first that the canvas was tough and handled being thrown into the footwell of rides for a week sooo well it never seemed to look dirty! And second, the neutral colour scheme meant the hubs was happy to do his stint of bag carrying too! With more feminine colour/design I get lumbered with bag duty, but this is so non-offensive. It’s stylish and durable and I love it! The best bag I’ve ever travelled with!

Lori

I love cross body bags. This is my favorite, and it even comes in red. http://shop.nationalgeographic.com/ngs/product/clothing/accessories/travel-bags/leather-traveler-bag

Hi Lori, that looks like a great bag – love the red!

Taylor

Where is the grey crossbody bag from?

Hi Taylor, it was the Timbuk2 Harriet Women’s Shoulder Bag shown here but it’s now sold out: http://amzn.to/1KH3tcs

This one by Overland Equipement is similar and comes in the color grey: http://amzn.to/1KH3A7Q

Anne

Before I leave my accommodation each day, I put some money (enough for a bus ticket or coffee depending on what I will be doing) in my pocket so that I am not opening my bag all the time. Works well for me.

GREAT TIP!!! Me too 🙂 I always forget about that one

Hi, Just thought I’d add that there are some very small and waterproof wallets out there that you can easily hide almost anywhere. Amazon has these but sadly I can’t recall the full name… but “ Frog” is one part. It has a window, and two zip pockets. I put as little as possible for the day in this, but usually have two. The other carries the most important stuff and I keep them separate. Hope you can find it. May be the perfect thing! Connie

My bad, The name of the small wallet is Chums….and as an added note, the Patagonia LW Courier bag has a very wide and well padded strap ( nearly 3” across) is adjustable in length, and does zip shut. No problems even in Panama! I try not to wear expensive-looking jewelry or watches, and sometimes even replace my wedding ring with something much cheaper ( silver usually). My go-to travel necklace is made of colorful wooden beads and can go long or doubled and short. Silver earrings and cheap timex watch ( with alarm) and fabric band, is my all-purpose choice for travel. I made a leather bracelet than actually can hold money, or more expensive stuff inside. Connie

Nikki

I would like to say that cross body bags are targets for thieves. The three times I was robbed while living in south america involved cross body bags. For one, they are easy to rip off your body with enough force. That’s how I got robbed once. Someone just ripped it right off of me. I’ve heard of this happening to someone else. Someone on a bike rode by this woman and just ripped it right off of her. They also are easy for thieves to get their hands into without you looking so one that zips is essential. Thats how I was robbed the other two times – having a bag that didn’t zip.

Johnie

Heck yeah this is exlacty what I needed.

Karitsa

so what would you recommend to avoid being robbed? A backpack surely seems unsafe and you can’t see them going into your bag. Please advise as I’ll be traveling to South Africa soon and doing a lot of sightseeing.

Hi Karitsa, here are a few articles related to safety: https://travelfashiongirl.com/travel-safety-tips/ https://travelfashiongirl.com/top-5-anti-theft-travel-bags-for-women-best-sellers/ https://travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-keep-your-passport-safe-while-traveling/

What would you recommend to avoid being robbed? One place I read, suggested a backpack. A backpack surely seems unsafe and you can’t see them going into your bag. I was in Egypt in 09 and a lot of people were robbed while sightseeing. Please advise as I’ll be traveling to South Africa (Johannesburg and Cape Town) soon and doing a lot of sightseeing. I like the idea of the anti theft one mentioned in your article.

Hi Karitsa, this article explains what I recommend to avoid being robbed: https://travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-keep-your-passport-safe-while-traveling/ You can also find more tips here: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-money-belts-and-anti-theft-travel-accessories/ and https://travelfashiongirl.com/travel-safety-tips/

Karitsa, Try not to wear anything that looks expensive! Especially jewelry, as it will ( guaranteed) attract the wrong attention! Remember the bag in Romancing the Stone? A perfect choice! Maybe low on style, but safer too. Read prev. Post for more. Connie

So many wonderful options. Thank you for all your informative posts. I just love your site.

Kelsea

Hi i was wondering what the light grey (i think it’s timbuk2) bag is?? I’ve been searching everywhere for it and it’s so cute I really want it!

Hi Kelsea, it was the Timbuk2 Harriet Women’s Shoulder Bag shown here but it’s now sold out: http://amzn.to/1KH3tcs This one by Overland Equipement is similar and comes in the color grey: http://amzn.to/1KH3A7Q

Peace

Check out MZ Wallace’s Paige bag too!

I will thanks!

I figured I would share this gem. This bag is one of the best investments that I have ever made. It literally holds my life in there! The inside is perfect with a large amount of space, one zippered pocket, and another deep pocket along the backside of the pack. These two pocket are perfect to store stuff in that you don’t want stolen. This bag has large straps that can’t be cut, and it also very stylish for even the fashionistas out there. I can’t wait to get another before my trip to Spain!

Hi brooke, that’s a great hybrid backpack/crossbody bag! Thanks for sharing your secret 🙂

Brooke Lynn, I also carry the Patagonia….but the LW Courier bag, which also has the wide strap. Plain black nylon with a zip top and three zip pockets. Holds a lot, and you won’t hurt anyone by banging them in the head with the edges! I have grown to love this thing!!! Connie

Diana Wood

Just ordered the mini travelon crossbody.

I agree that this style of purse is the best for travel. No need to full around with keeping it over your shoulder, and it’s less likely to get snatched. I just ordered one on sale from J Crew Factory and am waiting for it to arrive. 🙂

Even though nothing’s 100% theft proof, it’s definitely a good deterrent when it’s not an easy steal.

plus, they’re also cute and functional 🙂

Jennifer O

My absolute favorite is definitely the Longchamp Le Pliage nylon crossbody purse. The version of about 6 years ago is larger and has user friendly pockets, plus is very roomy! The new version is great too, but a bit smaller. You can score the original on upscale resale sites.

You can learn more about how we chose these styles and what to consider as you shop at the end of this article, but first, here's everything you need to know about the best crossbody bags for travel.

Best Travel Backpacks | Best Luggage | Best Carry-On Luggage | Best Underseat Luggage | Best Tote Bags | Best Weekender Bags | Best Duffel Bags | Best Fanny Packs | Best Packing Cubes | Best Travel Gear

This fan-favorite belt bag has a loyal following of both men and women (including several GH staffers!) thanks to its comfortable fit, lightweight materials and spacious interior — all for a reasonable price. The nylon fabric is water-resistant, while the strap is fully adjustable so you can get a close fit around your torso (or waist if you prefer to wear it as a fanny pack).

Just note that unlike some crossbody bags that sit at the hip, this one lies flat against your torso, so it's not quite as easy to access the contents. Though its smaller 1L version is more popular, we think this larger size is great for travel because it can hold more while you're on the go.

Dimensions: 8.3" x 2.2" x 5.7" | Colors: Over 15 options

Despite its low cost, this bag wowed our experts and consumer testers with its comfort, style and spaciousness. In fact, it can even hold a water bottle along with a phone, wallet, keys and other essentials — all with room to spare.

One tester told us, "I love how lightweight it is and how much I can fit inside it!" Beyond that, the curved shape helps it feel comfortable at your side, even when you're walking for miles. Though its materials aren't quite as luxe as pricier bags, it still looks sleek and neutral enough to wear with a variety of outfits.

Dimensions: 11" x 6.7" x 3.9" | Colors: 7 options

Though the style looks and feels substantial, it's s urprisingly lightweight thanks to its performance fabrics that also happen to be water-repellent. Each bag features a quilted design and is easily packable so it doesn't take up valuable space in your suitcase.

The bag is on the larger size for a crossbody with one big main compartment, plus a small zippered pocket in the front so you can quickly find your essentials. It's also worth noting that the adjustable strap is longer than some other crossbodies, meaning it can also be carried as a low-hanging shoulder bag.

Dimensions: 12" x 122" x 4" | Colors: 7 options

Sling bags are ideal for anyone who wants the functionality of a backpack with the wearability of a crossbody bag. This one in particular is made with smart travel features, including RFID protection and an extra strap to stop pickpocketing.

It also has plenty of compartments, including ones on the back (facing your body) and an easily accessible pocket in the front. One GH staffer that swears by this bag saying, "It's super comfortable and feels secure to wear while in big cities or crowded areas."

Dimensions: 7" x 12" x 2.5" | Colors: 10 options

For those who prefer leather bags over ones with synthetic performance fabrics, this fashion-forward pick is great for a more elevated luxury look, especially when you're dressed to impress on vacation.

While most stylish leather crossbodies have sky-high designer price tags, this one is on the more affordable end. Worn by celebrities like Serena Williams and Kristen Bell, it's not as lightweight as other travel crossbodies, but our testers say it's not too heavy, either. It has two zippered pockets, each with organizational compartments inside. It's also available in smaller sizes at lower costs.

Dimensions: 10.25" x 7.25" x 4" | Colors: 9 options

If safety is a big concern for your trip, consider a bag that has smart features to keep your belongings protected. This one in particular is equipped with five standout anti-theft features , including zippers that clip closed to prevent pickpocketing, slash-resistant fabric, slash-resistant straps, RFID-blocking pockets and a strap clip that lets you secure it to a chair when you're dining.

Travelon makes a variety of anti-theft crossbody bags , but this one is Amazon's Choice with nearly 10,000 reviews and an average 4.6-star rating. It has a slim design with interior pockets to carry essentials like your passport, phone and wallet, though it doesn't hold quite as much as other styles.

Dimensions: 8.5" x 8.5" x 2" | Colors: 15 options

If you'll be traveling in wet conditions — including going underwater — consider a waterproof pouch that you can wear as a crossbody. This one even has a waterproof zipper and is designed to keep your contents dry ; you can even carry your phone and money into a pool while wearing it! A clear front screen allows you to use a touch-screen phone without taking it out. Plus, the crossbody strap can adjust to be worn as as a belt bag.

Dimensions: 8.58" x 4.92" x 1.77" | Colors: 2 options

If you prefer a smaller crossbody but worry that it's not big enough, consider this unique style from Athleta that has add-on compartments in the strap.

The main pouch is a foam-like material with a water-repellent finish and it lies flat against the body. The strap contains pouches designed to hold sunglasses and AirPods. As an added bonus, the strap is removable and can be attached onto other bags, while the pouch can be used as an organizer inside larger purses.

Dimensions: Not listed | Colors: 2 options

For those that always carry around a water bottle, this sporty sling bag has a hidden bottle pouch that you can tuck away whenever you don't need it.

Besides its two zippered compartments, it also has a microfiber-lined pocket in the front for your cell phone or sunglasses. Plus, there's a small zippered compartment in the back in case you need your phone or other essentials kept safe. It's not super spacious, but it has card organizers inside a zippered pocket in case you just want to bring a credit card and ID without a full wallet.

Dimensions: 6.7" x 8.2" x 2.7" | Colors: 3 options

Like a modern-day messenger, this style has a wide opening so you can easily sift through everything you packed inside. Once it's zippered shut, the top folds over and secures with a magnet. (Just note that Lululemon warns the magnet can interfere with certain electronic devices and bank cards.)

One GH staffer said she uses it every day and noted that the flap "feels secure while commuting or traveling and allows for a quick retrieval for items inside." Like other Lululemon bags , it has a lightweight and water-resistant performance fabric.

Dimensions: 7.9" x 3.9" x 8.3" | Colors: 3 options

Dange Dover Landon Neoprene Carryall Bag (Extra Small)

Landon Neoprene Carryall Bag (Extra Small)

Available in five sizes, this style's largest options make perfect weekender bags while the smaller ones are more ideal as crossbody purses. This extra-small size still has a five-liter capacity, making it spacious enough to carry on-the-go essentials, even holding a small tablet or notebook.

We especially love this one's organizational features: inside the main zippered compartment are three pockets and a key leash, while the outside has a phone sleeve for easy access (though keep in mind: It's not zippered, so it's less secure). We also love its soft neoprene fabric and wide straps to support a heavier load.

Dimensions: 9" x 4.75" x 6.25" | Colors: 9 options

MZ Wallace Crossbody Belt Bag

Crossbody Belt Bag

When fashion is the first and foremost priority, consider a splurge-worthy style like this quilted belt bag. Despite its large size, it's still fairly lightweight thanks to its nylon material. It's also functional for travel with two zippered compartments and built-in pockets for organization.

We love its versatility thanks to its three detachable straps: Two wide ones for your waist or across the body and one chain strap to dress it up. Online reviewers call it "perfect for international travel," with one saying she found it especially useful on a trip to London and Paris.

Dimensions: 10" x 8.5" x 2" | Colors: 4 options

Bandolier Crossbody Bag

Crossbody Bag

For a simple, chic and timeless style, this small crossbody is described as a "sleek look with a ton of functionality packed in" by one GH analyst who personally uses it. For starters, the adjustable strap can be swapped for other straps from the brand , plus the bag can expand a bit to pack in more when you need it. The flap secures with a magnet (there's no zipper) and it's made with real pebbled leather for an elegant look that can be dressed up.

Dimensions: 8" x 6" x 3" | Colors: 3 options

Madewell The Medium Transport Tote

The Medium Transport Tote

Combining the capacity of a tote with the convenient strap of a crossbody, Madewell's bag is a tester favorite thanks to its supple leather and spacious interior.

A GH analyst that carries this bag while traveling said it's especially useful if you're going to be shopping so you don't have to carry around extra bags as you explore new cities. It's also ideal if you need to carry a bulky load, like an umbrella, water bottle and layers of clothing, but be aware that there's no zippered closure for protection.

Dimensions: 12.25" x 11" x 5.5" | Colors: 2 options

Coach Willow Bucket Bag

Willow Bucket Bag

If you're willing to invest in a well-made crossbody, this luxury bag from Coach looks stylish and uses high-end construction. One GH staffer that recommended this style said, "I own a variety of Coach bags and they continue to stay in great condition," adding that the Coach Outlet is a great option for more affordable versions.

She likes this bag in particular because of how roomy it is, calling it "just the right size." Just note that it has multiple sections, some of which are unzippered, making contents less secure while traveling.

Dimensions: 9.25" x 8.75" x 4.25" | Color: Black

How we chose the best crossbody travel bags

linebreak

The experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab are passionate about finding the best products at the crossroads of fashion and function, constantly testing to find apparel and accessories that perform well, feel (and look) great and last for years to come.

To find the best crossbody bags for travel, we considered our staff's personal favorites from the dozens of styles that we've tested in our Lab and personally tried out in real life. We also asked other Good Housekeeping editors and analysts to weigh in with their recommendations, plus we performed market research using our product expertise to find new and popular styles from brands we know and love.

How to shop for travel-friendly crossbody bags

linebreak

The one thing all crossbody bags have in common is that they're worn across your body. Other than that, here's what to consider when choosing the best crossbody bag for your next getaway:

  • Size: Smaller dimensions typically mean the bag is more totable, but will hold less. Alternatively, larger bags may fit more inside but can be cumbersome to wear, depending on your type of travel. Besides the dimensions, also consider the capacity: 1-2 liters will be smaller, while 5 liters will be more spacious yet still comfortable to wear.
  • Compartments and pockets : Some crossbody bags have one main compartment, while others have several compartments to help you stay organized. Also check for pockets inside the compartments, including pouches to hold your phone, keys and cards for easy access.
  • Closures: Most crossbody bags for travel have zippers to keep everything safe and secure inside. However, some have magnet closures and others have no closures at all. Consider how secure you need your belongings to be and whether you'll be at risk for things falling out or being pickpocketed.
  • Materials: Many styles are made of synthetic performance fabrics (like nylon and polyester) because they're lightweight and water-resistant. If you prefer a more luxurious bag, opt for leather (or even faux leather). Also keep in mind that bags with metal hardware will be heavier to carry around.
  • Adjustability: To ensure your crossbody bag will fit comfortably around your torso, check for an adjustable strap so you can find the right fit. Some crossbody bags are also convertible, meaning you can change the straps or change how you wear them on your body.
  • Packability: If you'll be packing your crossbody bag in your suitcase, consider opting for a lighter and thinner style instead of one that's more structured. If you do prefer a structured bag for style, consider wearing while en route to your destination or filling it with smaller items (like socks and underwear) in the suitcase so you don't waste valuable packing space.
  • Safety features: Certain trips require you to pay closer attention to the risk of people that prey on tourists. In these cases, look for anti-theft features like secure zippers, straps that can attach onto your seat and RFID-blocking technology.
  • Appearance: Last, but certainly not least, it's okay to choose a travel bag based on how it looks without sacrificing other important features. Consider what you'll be doing and wearing throughout your trip. Some of our recommendations are especially good at transitioning from daytime exploring to nighttime dining while matching a wide range of outfits.

The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks

Kit Dillon

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

When you open up your favorite carry-on travel backpack, it should feel like you’re opening the door to a well-organized closet or sitting down at a clean desk, with everything in the right place and easy to reach.

This is your moment to center yourself, no matter how chaotic the journey.

What we considered

A 45-liter bag maximizes overhead space but can get heavy when fully packed; 35-liter bags tend to be more manageable.

A bag with a clamshell design opens like a book and is the easiest to pack, but a bag that opens traditionally tends to have more structure.

Ideally, a travel backpack has handles on all sides—especially the bottom—so you can pull it out of overhead bins or from under seats.

Some internal pockets are useful, but major organizing is better managed with packing cubes.

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack and the larger Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L offer the best combination of features, quality, and durability. Both bags are exemplary carry-on travel backpacks that are designed for comfort, durability, and organization. Though these backpacks are great as companion bags for any trip, they’re designed to ultimately replace all of your other luggage and become your exclusive bag as you travel.

This style of packing is not for everyone, but once some people try it, they’re forever hooked. Finding the right bag is a personal choice, though, and no single bag will appeal to everyone. That’s why we also have picks that are great for people who travel for work , others that are designed to be carried over long distances , and a bag that’s basically luggage on your back .

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, best small carry-on bag for most situations: cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack, best large bag for most situations: peak design travel backpack 45l, best mobile office: patagonia black hole mlc 45l, best bag for long journeys on foot: osprey farpoint 40 and fairview 40, best bag if you need a large suitcase on your back: tortuga travel backpack pro 40l, other good carry-on travel backpacks, how we picked and tested, the competition.

I’ve been covering aspects of luggage and travel bag design for Wirecutter for nearly a decade, and I have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time. I personally try to do most of my travel with a single backpack, whenever possible. I spent nine months roaming around Hawaii with not much more than that, and I spent another six months nomadically couch-surfing in New York City.

I reached out to writers who specialize in traveling the world carrying everything they need in a single bag: Eytan Levy, the owner and operator of the Snarky Nomad travel website; James Feess, founder of The Savvy Backpacker ; and Sharon Gourlay, of the Where’s Sharon? travel website. I also spoke with moderators of Reddit’s r/onebag and r/heronebag forums, as well as with Chase Reeves, bag fanatic, reviewer, and owner of Matterful .

We researched and tested bags designed for those who want to travel light and stay flexible while flying, without the burden of checking luggage. For some people, the challenge of cutting down a packing list is intimidating. But if you can get past that initial hurdle, traveling with a single bag is a revelation. With fewer items, you have more time to concentrate on and appreciate the journey.

  • When you’re not loaded down by heavy luggage, it’s easy to remain more mobile. And it’s easier to adjust your plans mid-trip. If you’re willing to do laundry on the road, then one bag is all you need to travel indefinitely. At its heart, one-bag travel allows you to discover more—not just about the places you’re going but also about yourself and what you really need day to day.
  • Size and weight still matter. If you desire more creature comforts or more gear, or if you plan to be away for a long time across multiple climates, you’ll want a bigger travel backpack . These larger bags tend not to be carry-on-friendly, however, especially in Europe, so be prepared to check them.
  • No single backpack is perfect for everyone. Before you make any purchase, consider some basic points. How much can you carry? And where do you usually visit: the city or outback? Travel gear should feel like a welcome companion—there to support you when you need it but unobtrusive when you don’t.

45-liter bag vs. 35-liter bag

A graphic comparing the difference in capacity between a 45-liter and a 35-liter backpack.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L

A versatile small pack for a week or a weekend.

This durable bag’s clamshell design makes it easy to organize your stuff. And due to its strap design, this bag can be worn on your back or carried in your hand while you’re on the move.

Buying Options

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is an easy-to-organize, comfortable-to-carry bag for getaways lasting just a few days or a whole week.

It’s one bag that can do it all. This is a great all-around bag for any traveler who’s dedicated to packing light, or for a smaller person who wants less to carry. There are handles on all four sides of this bag, so it’s easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty, and it has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

It comes in various sizes, but we think the middle-of-the-road version is the best. Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28-liter and 42-liter sizes. But for us, the 35-liter bag is the best option. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when it is fully packed, and we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for shorter trips, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack , which is designed to fit snugly into the Allpa bag’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

It’s organized, easy to pack, and easy to carry. The Allpa bag has a clamshell design, so it opens like a hard-sided suitcase—a large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, allowing it to fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothing (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that there are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

The packed Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack, shown fully open so that the contents are accessible.

It’s secure but still accessible. The Allpa pack has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom; so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer. The other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

It’s comfortable to carry. The Allpa bag’s hip belt—which can be removed while the bag is on your back—is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa bag is comfortable to carry over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of shoulder straps, unlike the ones on our other picks, the Allpa bag’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa pack is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . (Denier is a measure of a fabric’s fiber thickness.) It feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. This is the type of bag that’s as easy to toss into an overhead compartment as it is into the back of a rusty pickup truck. And it also includes a rainfly, which is unique in this category.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Though this pack is well organized for packing, it’s less ideal as a mobile office. The Allpa pack has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.
  • We prefer the model without the TPU front. Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa pack without the TPU-lined front panel. The TPU panel improves water resistance, but after many years of traveling with our bag, we’ve found that the TPU layering can begin to flake in spots.

A person stands by a wooden fence outdoors while wearing the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L, our larger pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind. Yet most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a good choice for those carrying more expensive gear—especially camera gear. It’s also great for those who prefer a large, backpack-based packing system.

One bag provides many configurations. Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be carried on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. That’s not the case with the Peak Design: This bag looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

It’s expandable, with clever folds and zippers. You can access the bag through a back panel (which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch) as well as a front one (if you unzip the pass-through divider). You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps, which run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. In this configuration, it will still feel larger than a normal daypack, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400-denier nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa.

It has fold-away straps, for easier storage. The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re still comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga pack; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

It’s great for carrying expensive gear. If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in five sizes. And if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (a photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

  • It’s expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes.
  • More complexity means more things that can break. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga bag instead.

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack, is held in midair by a person wearing a plaid shirt.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s split interior makes organizing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate this bag’s dedicated panels for organizing tech, books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

If you travel often for business and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks, you may like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L . This bag has a front panel and assorted pockets that make it feel like a small traveling office.

It’s built like luggage but organized like your office. Of all the bags we recommend, the MLC (short for Maximum Legal Carry) comes closest to being a suitcase on your back, due to its large size, simple interior, and minimal external features. The MLC is also one of the simplest bags we tested, divided into two leaves (imagine a book with only one page), with a main compartment for packing and a second compartment for document organization and tech storage. The MLC has a built-in laptop compartment that fits 17-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body.

Despite its size, it’s comfortable enough to carry. Most carry-on backpacks of this size, without frames, become somewhat unwieldy when fully packed. Thankfully, the Black Hole MLC bag, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, is a welcome exception to this rule. The MLC has two shoulder straps, a hip belt, and an optional shoulder strap, for easy carrying. When they're not in use, or when you’re checking your bag, all of the straps can be stowed away easily. When fully loaded, the bag was pleasant to carry—not as comfortable as the Peak Design or the Osprey, but decent enough. I wouldn’t want to carry it all day across a city, but I wouldn’t mind carrying it through an airport to a car and to a hotel.

It’s built from high-quality materials, with durability in mind. This pack is made from recycled polyester, and the fabric is woven in a cross-weave that’s very similar to what Patagonia uses in its long-lasting Black Hole series of duffle bags . This is a material I’ve come across a bunch with Patagonia gear, and I’ve tested it thoroughly; it’s very tough. The front of the bag is coated in a weather-resistant TPU, for extra protection from the elements. The bag has large YKK zippers (the industry leader) and smaller YKK zippers throughout. Unlike the Cotopaxi Allpa pack, the Black Hole MLC bag has no security loops.

It comes with one of the best repair programs and a lifetime warranty. Similar to our other picks, the MLC is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty , and we’ve always found that Patagonia’s repair program goes above and beyond other comparable companies.

  • We wish the Maximum Legal Carry (despite the name) came in a few more sizes. The 45-liter capacity may be intimidating for some people, and there is no alternative.

The Osprey Farpoint/ Fairview 40 Travel Pack, one of our also-great picks for the best carry-on travel backpack, shown in black.

Osprey Farpoint 40

For long distances on foot.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, this bag is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world.

lightweight shoulder bag travel

Osprey Fairview 40

For long distances and smaller torsos.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, this bag has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Updated in 2023, the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 packs are both built around a hiking backpack frame that’s easy to carry over long distances.

It’s built for travel but designed for hiking. The Farpoint 40 bag is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint bag also applies to the Fairview bag.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint pack also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

View of the straps on the reverse of the Osprey travel backpack.

It’s simple to pack, but not as spacious as it seems. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, yet you won’t have to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike when you’re packing a bit of sturdy luggage, and that’s something we love about bags like this one—especially when you use packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint bag for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the Farpoint pack’s available space is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

It’s the easiest bag to carry among our picks. Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint 40 has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration Osprey has put into its hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint 40. After more than seven years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to wear when fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint 40 stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa pack is more flexible, and it lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

The Fairview 40 has the same features, in a scaled-down size. The Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 packs basically have the same design, but the Fairview pack is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso. It’s also slightly lighter. However, it has the features and durability of the Farpoint bag. It also has the same hip belt and adjustability. On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

  • For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little to not like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight (Farpoint): 3 pounds 3 ounces Weight (Fairview): 3 pounds 2 ounces Main compartment access: front-panel loader Style: active Colors (Farpoint): green (Gopher), gray (Tunnel Vision), blue (Muted Space), black Colors (Fairview): blue (Winter Night), red (Zircon), blue (Night Jungle), black

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L maximizes packing space in a bag that’s durable, water-resistant, and customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), with plenty of organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

It’s like a suitcase, with backpack straps. The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

The Tortuga Backpack Pro shown with the front clamshell lid in the open position.

It’s as easy to pack as luggage. When it comes to packing, the Tortuga pack has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter pack (the maximum space for a carry-on bag), which we tested; there is also a 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L bag.

It’s very customizable. The Tortuga pack is the most adjustable model we tested, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. Of the packs we’ve tested, this one (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best at distributing its weight (4½ pounds when empty—roughly 1½ pounds more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design ). The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

  • Its straps don’t stow away. Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa ) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design.
  • It's heavy. We’ve fielded complaints from some testers who said that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4½ pounds, this latest Tortuga bag is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be (the difference is noticeable), and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design pack. We are currently testing a new, lighter, and less-expensive version of this pack—aptly named the Travel Backpack Lite 40L —and will report back soon.  In the meantime, if you think you would struggle carrying the Tortuga, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L.

Capacity: 40 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: minimal, with a rigid construction Color: black

If you want to travel like a backpacker but also fit in at a board meeting (and you have the budget for it): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This bag’s reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers. And after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks—and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability—you need to buy the internal frame , the hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the shoulder strap . On a bag that already costs $330, all of this adds up. Everything about the Tom Bihn bag (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, but it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn bag lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

If you want a budget pick (but only when it’s on sale): The eBags Mother Lode Travel Backpack (our former budget pick) is still your best budget option, if you can catch it on sale for at least half off the list price. It’s not comfortable enough for trekking long distances on foot, but there are plenty of external pockets for organization, a laptop sleeve (which holds the weight of your computer high up on your shoulders), and an easy-to-access main compartment. This pack also has the largest capacity of any bags we tested, expanding to 65 liters—well beyond any airline’s regulated 45-liter limit. However, the bag’s casual-to-basic looks might not be to everyone’s taste. In 2024, eBags raised the price of the Mother Lode to $200. We have seen it on sale for $100, and in our opinion it’s worth getting only at the sale price.

We’ve narrowed our specifications for a great bag to the following list of features, ordered from most relevant to least:

  • Front- or back-panel loader or clamshell opening, for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with this type of bag, you should be able to open it and see everything you’ve packed. When you have a bag with a panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional, top-opening design—you can pack and unpack it just as you would a suitcase.

A graphic illustrating a clamshell bag opening

  • Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps are, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
  • Hip-belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
  • Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you exotic, light, and strong materials, such as Dyneema or sailcloth.
  • Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
  • Stowable straps: These are nice to have, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
  • Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything; others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized bags with simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.
  • Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.

During testing, we flew across the country with these bags, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of the carry-on travel backpacks we have tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our criteria.

The Away Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L is a rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Although it’s made from excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

The cheap, no-frills Cabin Max Metz bag is intriguing for the price. Any bag at this price should almost be considered disposable. That said, if you need a simple bag that costs less than a seat upgrade, this might be the way to go—unless you can pick up the eBags Motherlode bag for under $100, which we think is a better deal at that price.

The GeniusPack Travel Backpack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need that, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . GeniusPack now offers a second version of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.

For certain people, the GoRuck GR3 is almost worth the cost. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear, and it’s good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. This is a decent bag. After testing it, however, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, it’s difficult to keep clean, and it clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

The Minaal Carry-On 2.0 was designed to be a backpack for business people. But if you’re carrying it for business, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. If you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, this is a well-thought-out pack. But we think our picks are more versatile for world travel, and they come at a better price. Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version of this bag ; our thoughts about it remain the same.

The Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint pack. The Sojourn Porter bag is about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to check your bag at the last minute, this would be an excellent alternative to the Farpoint pack.

How to Shop for Travel-Friendly Crossbody Bags

elle line break

  • Look for bags that close securely. Zippered or lock closure tops are best. Snaps and magnets come in second, and open tops offer the least protection against theft.
  • Before purchasing, make sure a bag will hold all of your necessities. If you’re a seasoned traveler, you likely know which items you like to keep on your throughout your days. But if not, give it some thought. Will you want to keep your passport on your person, or are you comfortable using the hotel safe? Do you carry an inhaler or EpiPen? Is your wallet large, or do you have a sleek card holder? Think these things over and be sure your new bag will hold everything you want it to. Often, it’s better to go slightly larger than you might initially think you need. Size up.
  • Ideally, the bag will feel comfortable to wear and will have a thick, perhaps even padded, strap. It’s also preferable for straps to be adjustable.
  • The more organizational features, the better.
  • A bag that can be worn in multiple ways or has a versatile style is best if you want to pack light. Some bags won’t transition well to a fancy dinner or night out. If you only plan to bring one bag, keep this in mind.
  • If you’re more concerned with practicality, you’ll definitely want to look for durable, weather-resistant materials, so you don’t have to worry about getting caught in the rain.

Why Crossbody Bags Are Good for Travelers

linebreak

  • If worn as a true crossbody, it’s not as easy for the bag to slip off your shoulder—or to be snatched—as it is with a tote, shoulder, or handbag. Yet, it still provides that handsfree convenience. The same can be said for backpacks.
  • From a fashion perspective, crossbody bags are easier to dress up than backpacks and are likely to match with more of your outfits.

Solgaard Carry-On Closet Original – Large

Dimensions: 22.4 x 14.6 x 9.6 inches | Weight: 8.1 pounds; 8.85 pounds with closet insert Packing capacity: 4-7 days |  Color options:  Red, purple, navy or 6 others, plus precious metals options Hard- or soft-sided:  Hard-sided   | Warranty: Lifetime

Sturdy and attractive, this suitcase is set apart from the rest by its patented and removable shelving system. This unique design feature makes packing easier, keeps items in place and removes the need for unpacking at your destination. Rather than a zippered clamshell design, the Solgaard Carry-on Closet has two latches that open with just the squeeze of two levers together; it secures with a TSA-approved lock.

The waterproof polycarbonate exterior has an aluminum frame and corner guards so this suitcase can withstand all the rigors of travel. There's also an ergonomic handle and frictionless wheels, which make it easy to maneuver on all types of terrain. What's more, this sustainable suitcase helps to repurpose 6 pounds of plastics that may have ended up in the ocean.

What our editors say:

This carry-on suitcase has it all! From the power bank (sold separately) to the super sturdy and comfortable handle to the removable closet feature – not to mention the attractive yet functional appearance – this suitcase packs a punch. Best Overall Runner-up: Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner in cream on a pathway outside.

Leilani Osmundson | U.S. News

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner in cream.

Price: $369.99 or less

Dimensions: 23 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches | Weight: 8.1 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 10 days; 45 liters | Color options: White, red, blue, green or gray Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: Limited lifetime

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner is a truly well-rounded carry-on with a plethora of unique features. USB A & C ports on the outside of the bag give easy access to charging. (A power bank is not included, though the bag does have a pocket for one inside the expansion zipper.) Self-aligning magnetic wheels – a reviewer-favorite feature – allow painless travel through the airport as well as on roads, sidewalks, uneven surfaces and more. A built-in TSA zipper lock offers ultimate protection for your possessions.

Even without the features listed above, this Travelpro spinner is, at its core, a high-quality piece. The hard outer shell is ultra-strong and 100% polycarbonate; aluminum corner guards further protect your belongings. The clamshell-style suitcase has two large interior compartments along with three extra pockets, one of which is water-resistant, and the expansion zipper allows for an extra 2 inches of packing room. Plus, this carry-on is made with genuine leather trim, so you can travel in style as well as comfort.

There are some amazing features on this carry-on, but my favorite is the wheels – as someone who typically prefers hands-free travel (primarily backpacks), I found that the way this suitcase easily glides around everywhere absolutely changed my mind about wheeled luggage. Just know that since this is one of the larger bags on this list, I would still check your airline's carry-on size requirements before traveling (though it's been tested for most major domestic airlines, and it fit perfectly on Delta). – Leilani Osmundson, Senior Digital Producer

The Away The Carry-On in green.

Amanda Norcross | U.S. News

The Away The Carry-On in green.

Price: $275 or less

Dimensions: 21.7 x 14.4 x 9 inches | Weight: 7.5 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 5 days; 39.8 liters | Color options: Black, navy, blue gray or olive, plus 2 glossy options Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: Limited

When it comes to hard-sided carry-on luggage , nothing beats The Carry-On by Away. The bag is lightweight yet indestructible thanks to a 100% polycarbonate exterior. Plus, you can easily wipe away most scratches with a magic eraser.

In late 2023, Away launched a new iteration of The Carry-On that somehow made it even more efficient. The most notable new features are an additional underside grab handle, three extra interior compartments, and an enhanced compression system that upholds the bag's ability to accommodate nearly a week's worth of clothing. The bag's 360-degree wheels are also slimmer than those of its predecessor for improved maneuverability. While Away has long been known for its neutral colored matte options, glossy options of this bag are now available.

The Away Carry-On is my ride or die. I've taken it on so many trips over the past five-plus years and it's still in perfect shape. I know I'll have it with me for many years to come. – Amanda Norcross, Senior Content and SEO Strategist

Samsonite SoLyte DLX Carry-On Spinner in blue in an alley.

Catriona Kendall | U.S. News

The Samsonite SoLyte DLX Carry-On Spinner in blue.

Price: $199.99 or less

Dimensions: 22 x 14 x 9.5 inches | Weight: 7.1 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 7 days; 32 liters | Color options: Black, gray, green, aqua blue or royal blue Hard- or soft-sided: Soft-sided | Warranty: 10-year limited

This classic soft-sided option from Samsonite offers everything you need for a smooth trip. There are three spacious pockets and a trolley strap on the outside so you can stack it on top of another rolling suitcase, as well as a USB port for charging your phone (though you'll have to purchase a battery separately).

Inside the suitcase, three more zippered pockets – including one for wet items – help you stay organized, while buckles keep the main compartment's tie-down straps out of your way while packing. This spinner can conveniently expand by 0.75 inches, but keep in mind if you're flying that overpacking may put it over your carry-on size allowance.

I've used other spinner suitcases in the past, but none of them glide as smoothly as this bag, with its 360-degree dual-spinner wheels. I also love the high-quality, lightweight material, but my favorite part is its organizational features – especially the WetPak pocket. I'd highly recommend the Samsonite SoLyte DLX for anyone who needs a trusty soft-sided carry-on for a flight; it definitely fits more than I thought it would. – Catriona Kendall, Editor

July Carry On Light in black against a sunny window.

Price: $245 or less

Dimensions: 21.25 x 14.17 x 7.5 inches | Weight: 3.9 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 7 days; 32 liters | Color options: Beige, light green, dark green, lilac, charcoal or 3 others Hard- or soft-sided: Hard | Warranty: Lifetime with 100-day returns

Weighing just under 4 pounds, this bag is the lightest hard-sided carry-on we found on the market. It's constructed with an extremely durable German polycarbonate shell, and the interior has two mesh zippered compartments to keep your belongings from shifting. The inner nylon lining is also resistant to water and stains. To make the suitcase easy to maneuver, there's a top carry handle, a telescoping handle and dual-spinner wheels.

I was absolutely shocked by how light this suitcase is. While some lightweight designs can be extremely flimsy, this July carry-on is very durable and holds a good amount of clothing. With compression packing cubes I was able to pack enough clothing for a week. It was extremely easy to put in the plane's overhead compartment, and the wheels rolled very smoothly for my entire journey. The only thing I noticed is that since the bag is so lightweight, the trolley bag I had was making it want to topple. Next time, I'd use a smaller tote or a north-south design to avoid that issue. – Rachael Hood

The DELSEY PARIS Helium Aero International Carry-On - Expandable Spinner in blue.

Erin Evans | U.S. News

The DELSEY PARIS Helium Aero International Carry-On - Expandable Spinner in blue.

This DELSEY PARIS carry-on is a well-built piece of hard-sided luggage. It meets carry-on suitcase size restrictions for most international airlines and offers an easily accessible front compartment – ideal for a laptop up to 15.6 inches or other items you want to be able to grab quickly. The suitcase has a TSA lock and two spacious internal compartments for clothing, shoes and travel gear. The double-spinner wheels glide smoothly across all types of surfaces, and the handle pulls out and retracts with ease.

I was incredibly impressed by this little workhorse of a carry-on bag. There are so many different pockets and compartments within it for organization, and it fits a surprising amount of clothes, shoes and accessories. The handle and wheels make it easy to maneuver, and the glossy exterior makes it look sleek and chic. – Erin Evans, Managing Editor

Dimensions: 21.46 x 14.76 x 9.45 inches | Weight: 7.34 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 7 days; 23 liters | Color options: Black, navy blue, orange or light blue Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: 1-year

The Amazon Basics 20-inch Hardside Spinner is similar to many other hard-sided luggage products on the market, but it's available at a fraction of the price. The ABS shell is textured, so even if you – or luggage handlers – bang it around a bit, it does not show scuffs or scratches easily. The double-spinner wheels (a must, honestly, in today's luggage landscape) make the bag effortless to maneuver.

Exclusive to Briggs & Riley, this technology allows your bag to expand and compress in one swift motion. Simply press and pull up on the red levers found at opposite ends of the bag, and it will grow 2.5 inches. Once you've packed your belongings, push down on the buttons to compress the bag before zipping it up.

This bag also features a garment folder to reduce wrinkles in a suit or dress, as well as cinch-down garment panels to secure the clothing in place. Other convenient features include interior mesh compartments for organization, an exterior pocket for airport essentials (or even your laptop) and a signature PowerPocket where you can charge your smartphone.

While the bag is undoubtedly an investment at $700, its "simple as that" guarantee (free repairs forever, no questions asked) – plus sturdy features like impact-resistant corner guards and self-repairing zippers – means you'll have it for life.

When it comes to quality, this is the best luggage I've ever used – period. The compression/expansion system is just the icing on the cake. – Amanda Norcross

Best Underseater: CALPAK Luka Soft-Sided Mini Carry-On Luggage

On the inside, there's a padded laptop sleeve, multiple interior pockets and compression straps. When I'm traveling on a quick trip with my laptop, this is my go-to bag. Its compact size glides easily under the seat, and it's also compact and light enough to fit into the overhead bin even on the smallest regional planes. I love the laptop sleeve and the zippered exterior pocket for my book, earbuds and wipes. To maximize the interior space, I use compression cubes from Lug , and I'm able to squeeze in four to five outfits, a pair of shoes and daily necessities. – Rachael Hood

The Amazon Basics Expandable Softside Carry-On Spinner – 20.4 Inch in black.

Price: $83 or less

Dimensions: 20.4 x 14.9 x 8.2 inches | Weight: 6.35 pounds Packing capacity: 2-3 days; 26 liters | Color options: Black, olive, gray, red, blue or purple Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: 1-year

The 20.4-inch option is ideal for shorter trips, but this style is available in larger sizes as well. Another bonus: It's available on Amazon Prime, so it ships quickly.

This Amazon Basics option is on the smaller side for a carry-on, but that's what makes it a solid choice for business travelers going on short trips who only need to pack a few things. The laptop pocket is easily accessible, and the handle on the bottom of the bag is super useful for hauling it out of an overhead bin. The black color is professional, and the price can't be beat. – Erin Evans

Carl Friedrik The Carry-on Pro in black against chair.

Price: $565 or less

Dimensions: 21.7 x 15 x 9.6 inches | Weight: 9.5 pounds Packing capacity: 5-7 days; 43 liters | Color options: Gray/cognac, gray/chocolate, gray/black or black Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: Lifetime with a 100-day trial

Constructed with premium materials, this luxury carry-on has Italian leather accents, Japanese spinner wheels and a polycarbonate exterior with an aluminum metal frame for stability. It closes via two secure latches with combination locks (rather than a zipper). There's a front laptop compartment with a smaller pocket and pen slots to keep business essentials or travel documents easy to access.

The interior has leather details, compression straps and a removable compression pad with a pocket – ideal for small items like ties, fashion jewelry or silk scarves. Travelers can also purchase an additional compression pad to have a pad on each side of the interior compartment.

This suitcase exudes luxury with its Italian leather trim and understated elegance. The design of it looks very sleek, the interior is spacious, the handle is very sturdy and the wheels glide with ease. I especially liked that the top of the suitcase is very flat, which gave my trolley bag a secure base so it wasn't moving around while I was at the airport, and the front compartment was ideal for accessing my laptop on the go. It feels very sturdy, but the only downside is it weighs more than a typical carry-on. – Rachael Hood

Best Carry-on Duffel: The North Face Rolling Thunder – 22"

The North Face's 22-inch Rolling Thunder duffel doesn't have the bells and whistles of other carry-on options, but it's a sturdy and reliable option for those who want a duffel style on wheels. The duffel has a hard-sided back panel, two wheels that can withstand various terrain and plastic bumpers for abrasion resistance. The soft-sided top of the bag is made of water-resistant Base Camp material and nylon for extra durability. There are two zippered pockets on the outside to stash small items and a mesh pocket inside for some added organization.

I brought this duffel on a trip to New Zealand, and it held up very well. The Rolling Thunder had no issues after being checked on six different flights, and the flexibility of the style allowed me to easily store it out of the way in my campervan once I had unpacked. It's definitely a simpler style, but it does its job well. Be aware, though, that this wheeled style doesn't have straps that would allow you to carry it like a duffel; it can only be rolled. – Catriona Kendall

Organization is a breeze with a top zippered pocket – perfect for storing travel documents or a Cotopaxi hip pack – and a padded laptop sleeve on the outside. Internally, you'll find two mesh compartments, one large and one subdivided, that work great with Cotopaxi packing cubes . The backpack's straps can be tucked away for more streamlined travel, and the bag even comes with a rain cover (though the Allpa is already TPU-coated to be water-resistant).

Besides being incredibly durable, I love how much this backpack can fit; my longest trip so far with only the Allpa 35L as my luggage has been a comfortable nine days, and that included packing bulky cold-weather gear. I just wish it had a water bottle pocket like the Allpa 42L does! – Leilani Osmundson

Solo New York Re:Serve Carry-On Spinner: While the Solo New York Re:Serve Carry-On Spinner is a solid (and sustainable) carry-on bag for less than $200, it doesn't offer quite enough space – especially for someone who may be traveling for longer.

Away The Aluminum Carry-On Bag: This is a well-built carry-on bag. The only downfall is that it's on the heavier side, weighing nearly 11 pounds. Away's Aluminum Carry-On is also more than twice the cost of the standard carry-on by Away, which works just as well.

Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner: This is a great soft-sided option if you're looking for a lightweight suitcase. Featuring a sleek nylon construction, a large front exterior pocket and internal zippered pockets, the Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner works well but isn't as lightweight as the July Carry-on Light.

Monos Carry-on Plus: It's a high-quality suitcase with a lot of internal details, but given its larger size this bag doesn't fit in the overhead compartment on multiple planes (especially regional jets). That said, if you're traveling domestically on larger planes, the Monos Carry-on Plus could be an option to consider. Or, the smaller standard Monos Carry-on could be a good option as well.

Pros and Cons of Hard-sided Luggage

Pros and cons of soft-sided luggage, frequently asked questions.

Aside from traditional rolling suitcases, the following items can be used as carry-on luggage provided they meet carry-on size limitations (which vary by airline) and fit in the overhead bin or fully under the seat (not sticking out) in front of you.

  • Duffel and weekender bags:  This includes weekenders and duffel bags with wheels . Just note that wheels are included in carry-on dimension restrictions.
  • Garment bags:  These are also considered carry-on baggage by most airlines. You can place your garment bag in the overhead bin, or in some cases, a small closet on the plane.
  • Pet carriers:  Some airlines consider pet carriers to be carry-on luggage. Check with your chosen airline when preparing for your trip with Fido.
  • Backpacks:  If your carry-on backpack fits under the seat, it will count toward your personal item allowance on most major airlines. This means you'll have the option to bring an additional bag for the overhead bin.
  • Diaper bags: If you're traveling with a baby, diaper bags and other baby travel gear generally don't count toward either allowance – meaning you can bring these items in addition to your carry-on bag and personal item.

Purses , briefcases and camera bags can be carried on the plane as well, but usually aren't considered carry-on bags and are instead labeled personal items. Underseater bags – often designed specifically to fit comfortably under a plane seat – are also ideal as a personal item.

Typically, travelers can bring one carry-on bag (for the overhead bin) and one personal item (for under the seat) on the plane, free of charge.

Carry-on luggage sizes can vary by airline. Several major U.S. carriers, such as American Airlines and United, impose a 22 x 14 x 9-inch rule. If you're buying new carry-on luggage, this is a good default size to choose – especially if you fly with a variety of airlines.

For international airlines, it's often 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 inches. To be sure about dimensions as well as any weight restrictions, see our guide to Carry-on Luggage Size & Weight by Airline . It usually doesn't matter how heavy your carry-on bag is, though some airlines do monitor the weight.

  • Hard-sided: The hard-sided July Carry On Light weighs less than 4 pounds, making it one of the most lightweight carry-on bags on the market. Other lightweight carry-on bags we recommend include the hard-sided Away The Carry-On (7.5 pounds) and the Amazon 20-Inch Hardside Spinner (7.3 pounds).
  • Soft-sided: If you're looking for a lightweight, soft-sided carry-on bag, consider the Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner (4.8 pounds) and the Samsonite SoLyte DLX Carry-On Spinner (7.1 pounds).

Hard-sided luggage is often heavier than soft-sided luggage – but only by a few pounds. If you're planning to purchase a hard-sided carry-on bag, look for something that's made of polycarbonate or polypropylene, both of which are lightweight yet durable materials.

How We Tested

Our team tested 26 carry-on bags across several price points and on a variety of trips spanning overseas flights, weekend getaways, overnight trips and more. We traveled by car, plane, train and cruise and packed for a variety of climates and activities, from shore excursions in Mexico to rainy road trips around Iceland. For bags with wheels, we tested their maneuverability on multiple surfaces, including gravel, pavement, grass, moving walkways, cobblestone and carpet. After four months of testing, we deem these carry-on bags the best of the best for 2024.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

The following editors personally tested the luggage recommended in this article:

Rachael Hood , Senior Editor: Hood rarely checks a bag, yet she loves to pack a lot and pick up some new finds along her journey. She looks for a combination of durability, functionality, interior space and overall appearance.

Catriona Kendall , Associate Editor: Kendall opts for convenient and versatile carry-ons that can work well for weekend and weekslong trips alike.

Amanda Norcross , Content & SEO Strategist: Norcross has mastered the art of traveling with a carry-on bag only, but believes this is only possible with the right luggage.

Leilani Osmundson , Digital Producer: Osmundson prefers lightweight, streamlined luggage that's ideal for adventure travel.

Travel + Leisure / Joy Kim

Whether you tend to pack light — and hate the idea of lugging around any more than necessary — or always seem to come back from vacation with more than you arrived with, foldable travel bags can come in quite handy. They typically don’t take up much space but the extra room they provide makes all the difference. The best ones come in an array of shapes, sizes, and silhouettes at any price point — which means options abound, depending on your specific needs and preferences.

To help narrow things down, we’ve gathered testing insights for our favorite foldable travel bags, plus researched others from brands like Baggu, Away, Lipault, and more. Our top picks combine fashion and function, while prioritizing key features like durability and portability at the same time.

Best Overall

Paravel fold-up backpack.

Made with water-resistant nylon, this lightweight backpack offers plenty of built-in organization, making it ideal for those on the go.

The soft material means that larger items can sag down or poke out noticeably.

If you’re looking to dip a toe into folding bags for travel, it’s hard to get more practical than the Paravel Fold-up Backpack. Whether you’re using it at your destination or as your in-flight personal item, it’s roomy enough to hold an extra pair of clothes, a 15-inch laptop, and more in the main compartment, plus small essentials such as chargers, a smartphone, and travel documents in the zippered front pouch. There's an interior zip pocket to keep smaller items separated and safe like keys or a wallet, as well.

We’ve used this bag on our travels and as a personal item and love that the back pocket doubles as a luggage sleeve as needed. It’s also worth mentioning that its lightweight, water-resistant nylon material is made from 15 upcycled plastic bottles.

When it’s time to unpack, just fold and zip the backpack up into itself — with no extra pouch (to lose). Coming in six colors including canyon yellow, safari red, and scuba navy, you can also opt for personalized initial embroidery to add a custom touch to the shade of your choice.

The Details: 13 x 16 x 9 inches (unfolded); 6 x 6.5 x 2.5 inches (folded) | 0.63 pounds | Nylon

Away The Packable Carryall

It folds down very small compared to its size when open.

The nylon material is ultra-thin and the bag has minimal structure.

Coming in at 43 liters, Away’s Packable Carryall is spacious enough to hold pretty much all of your essentials, from clothes to books to a laptop. It weighs around half a pound and folds down to around 4 x 6 inches, making it a compact and lightweight secondary bag, too. With that in mind, we recommend packing this inside your main carry-on or checked bag to use as a backup personal item for souvenirs and other travel trinkets. While the carrying strap is thick, we did find the bag itself lacks the structure that would allow it to stand on its own (so, if you set it down with your items inside, they all melt toward the ground). On a similar note, although the built-in luggage sleeve can come in handy, you’d have to make sure to pack well — with weighty things in the middle — to keep the bag from slipping off your suitcase.

Despite how thin the recycled nylon construction (which comes in four colors) is, it does happen to be water-resistant, making it an excellent choice for the beach or pool. Alternatively, because it’s so spacious inside, it could also serve as an overnighter or weekender bag as part of a longer trip.

The Details: 15 x 19.7 x 9 inches (unfolded); 6.3 x 4.3 x 2.4 inches (folded) | 8.8 ounces (with pouch), 8 ounces (without pouch) | Nylon

Best Expandable Bag

Longchamp le pliage expandable travel bag.

This chic bag, which expands in height up to 20 inches, can be carried several ways, making it among the most versatile picks on this list.

Overpackers may be burdened by how heavy it gets when stuffed with weighty items.

We’re big fans of Longchamp bags in general, and the Le Pliage Expandable Travel Bag in particular for its ability to be expanded and contracted in a matter of seconds. Leather trimming adds extra flair whether you’re using it as a daily bag at its shorter 14-inch height, or fully expanded at 20.5 inches for a trip instead. In fact, our team has used the bag in both sizes on nearly every occasion: A three-week trip to Europe, weekend visits to the beach, strolling around on hot summer days, long road trips, plane rides, or as an everyday purse.

This bag pulls double duty as both a handheld and hands-free bag thanks to top handles and a long adjustable strap (for crossbody or shoulder carrying instead). Meanwhile, the interior lining and zippered closure offer an extra sense of security, protecting against leaks and other mishaps. We found the nylon material incredibly easy to clean in the event of spilled water, coffee, or even food. We especially love how easy it is to use just about anytime since it folds up into a small square that can be thrown into another bag, perfect for trips where you return home with more than when you left.

The Details: 17.75 x 9 x 14-20.5 inches (unfolded) | 1.56 pounds | Nylon with leather details

Best Duffel

Tumi voyageur just in case duffel.

This versatile duffel can be carried four different ways.

The bag can feel flimsy if not filled completely.

First off, there are not one, not two, but four different ways to carry the Tumi Just in Case Duffel — crossbody with one long strap, over-the-shoulder (with two medium-sized straps), by hand (with two additional two straps), and, lastly, hands-free (thanks to the sleeve, which slides onto your suitcase). Also, when fully open, the storage pouch actually snaps inside the duffel bag, serving as an extra interior pocket that’s roomy enough to store keys, a wallet, headphones, and other small but essential travel items. This clever design is especially noteworthy because, in many cases, the folding bags’ storage case ends up 1) becoming wasted space and 2) is only too easy to lose. An additional front slip pocket also offers easy access to essentials such as your smartphone, ID, and boarding pass.

Additionally, despite the bag’s seemingly compact size, it offers a surprising amount of storage space: In fact, we were able to fit four dresses, two shoes, a pair of pajamas, and a toiletry bag — with room to spare! Available in four colors, this foldable duffel is constructed with lightweight nylon, which is water- and stain-resistant. Shoppers also have the option to add embroidery for an extra-special personalized touch.

The Details: 10.3 x 18.9 x 10.3 inches (unfolded) | 1.1 pounds | Nylon

Travel + Leisure / Morgan Ashley Parker

Best Water-repellent

Caraa baby hospital bag.

Made of water-repellent cotton, this oversized bag can be carried as a backpack or tote thanks to its long cushy straps.

At around $300, this foldable bag isn’t exactly a bargain.

Don’t be fooled by its name: The Caraa Baby Hospital Bag is so much more than a hospital bag — in fact, this chic foldable bag is especially ideal for travel. The ultra-spacious bag is outfitted with several compartments, including a zippered interior pocket for magazines and other in-flight reading materials and two zippered side pockets that are roomy enough to hold shoes, water bottles, tablets, and more. The interior also features a water-repellent cotton lining to protect your belongings from accidental spillage.

Travelers can carry the bag by the straps, which feature a fashionable bow detailing. It’s also worth mentioning that the straps are long enough for the bag to be worn as a backpack or carried like a tote bag. When not in use, simply roll, fold, and stash the bag away in the corresponding pouch. Oh, and did we mention it’s machine-washable, too?

The Details: 12 x 24 x 14 inches (unfolded) | 2.2 pounds | Cotton

Best Budget

Baggu nylon ripstop tote.

This machine-washable reusable tote can hold up to 50 pounds.

There are no zippers.

Baggu’s signature reusable tote is an editor favorite for its ultra-lightweight construction, and affordable price. In fact, several T+L staffers rarely leave home for vacation — or the day! — without one. The compact design, which folds into the corresponding pouch for convenient storage, is an added bonus. Despite the fact that it weighs less than 2 ounces, this one-of-a-kind bag is sturdy enough to hold up to 50 pounds, and we've used the same one for over nine years. It’s also machine-washable and made with recycled nylon so leaky groceries or drippy sightseeing lunches are no problem at all. Lastly, the durable bag is available in 20 colors and patterns to suit anyone’s style preferences from pistachio green to a raspberry print.

The Details: 25.5 x 15.5 × 6 inches (unfolded); 5 x 5 inches (folded) | 1.9 ounces | Nylon

Best Suitcase

Lipault foldable plume cabin.

We can fold this down and pack an extra carry-on inside our checked luggage.

The collapsable material doesn't hold its shape very well when unfolded.

If you’re planning on bringing home a lot of souvenirs, you might want something sturdier than a duffle bag or a backpack. That’s where the Lipault Foldable Plume Cabin comes in: this bag works as a standard carry-on but can be folded to a more compact size at the touch of a button. It features two wheels instead of four, which can make it a little more difficult to maneuver but allows you to collapse the bag with minimal bulk. This also helps to keep the bag lightweight, which is helpful when packing it in a larger suitcase.

Although the bag is light enough to break down, it’s sturdy and durable, so you don’t have to worry about transporting it through the airport. Inside, you’ll find one bottom compartment and three pockets for organization in addition to a single exterior pocket. We like the versatility of this bag and appreciate that we can stash it at the bottom of our checked luggage to have an extra suitcase to use on the way home. The foldable design also makes this easy to store at home – just compress it, then slide it under the bed or into a closet until your next trip.

The Details: 8.7 x 21.7 x 14.6 inches (unfolded) | 5.2 pounds | Nylon

Best Sling Bag

Away the packable sling bag.

This bag takes up hardly any room when folded, so it's a no-brainer to pack.

It's on the larger size for a sling bag when unfolded.

A sling bag is a great travel companion, keeping small items like your phone and wallet easily accessible. The Packable Sling Bag from Away folds up and fits into a small zip pouch when not in use, so it’s easy to throw into your suitcase before a trip. It’s lightweight (under four ounces without the carrying pouch) so it’s an ideal second bag option to tote along on long travel days. But don’t let its weight fool you – heavy-duty nylon keeps it sturdy and durable, so you can trust it to carry your phone, wallet, keys, and other valuables.

This sling bag has other features we like to see in our bags, including an adjustable strap to accommodate various sizes, an interior organization pocket, and a zip closure to prevent items from falling out. The bag is also water-resistant, so it can stand up to a walk in the rain from the airport to the bus stop.

The Details: 12.6 x 5.9 x 2.4 inches (unfolded); 3.7 x 5.5 x 2.4 inches (folded) | 3.2 ounces | Nylon

Best Mini Backpack

Paravel mini fold-up backpack.

This lightweight yet sturdy bag contains multiple zippered pockets for organization.

The straps are difficult to adjust when the backpack is on.

Whether it’s being used for traveling or running errands, we loved this mini backpack from Paravel for its compact yet sturdy design. Made from water-resistant nylon, this compact backpack folds flat and can be stored in a small pouch between uses, making it easy to throw into another bag before heading out. Some folding bags can feel like a puzzle but during testing we found that this was a cinch to close back up – just two folds and a zip. The material felt high-quality but still lightweight, and we were impressed to find zippered pockets inside and outside – something we don’t always see in folding bags.

During our lab tests, we found this mini bag could fit a water bottle, hand sanitizer, wallet, keys, phone, and two T-shirts easily. Even when stuffed full, the backpack was comfortable to wear thanks to soft straps that didn’t chafe or rub. We did find it difficult to adjust the straps while the backpack was on, but this wasn’t an issue once we found our ideal size the first time.

The Details: 10 x 12 x 6 inches (unfolded); 4.5 x 5 x 2 inches (folded) | 7.04 ounces | Recycled nylon

Tips for Buying Foldable Travel Bags

Decide how much space you need.

While shopping for folding travel bags, it’s important to consider how much room you’ll need for gear and other essentials. For example, if you want it for everyday use, you’ll want to prioritize a smaller bag you can easily carry as backup. If you tend to take a fair amount of shorter weekend trips, you likely won’t need a large piece of luggage. Instead, you can probably get away with a duffel bag , travel backpack , or even a large tote. On the other hand, if you often embark on longer trips, buying a larger bag, like a compressible checked suitcase, is a good idea.

Consider how compact the bag gets

As you narrow down your top picks for foldable travel bags, you’ll want to take into account how compact they actually get — because, in this case, size truly does matter. Can the bag fold small enough to fit in your pocket or purse? If it’s a bulkier piece, such as a rolling suitcase, make sure it can fold flat for easy storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Foldable bags function the same way as standard bags, except they’re even more convenient for travel. Put simply, what you can fit inside all depends on the size and type of foldable travel bag you’ve purchased. The folded bags can be carried inside another day bag while at your destination, and used for souvenirs, groceries, and other purchases. For fuss-free organization, consider snagging one equipped with built-in zippered or slip pockets to maximize space.

Foldable travel bags come in an array of shapes and sizes. With this in mind, it’s worth flagging that foldable travel bags can serve as a carry-on or personal item , depending on the specific one you’ve purchased. Just keep in mind that in order for your foldable travel bag to count as a personal item (as opposed to a carry-on) it has to fit underneath the seat in front of you. As always, check with your carrier before bringing it on board.
