Motown legend Diana Ross made a dedication to the fan who she saw had been dancing all night

Motown legend Diana Ross on stage at Leeds First Direct Arena as part of her Thank You UK tour

There was lots of glitz and sparkle shining in the summer sun as many flamboyantly dressed Diana Ross fans made their way into the First Direct Arena.

They waited patiently at the security checks with that being a mere footnote in the delay of Diana Ross’ UK tour which was halted because of the coronavirus pandemic . Inside, those who ardently love the Motown icon got the chance to show off their glittery outfits in all their splendour at the big Leeds funk and soul disco.

Ahead of her taking to the arena’s stage, support act Zak Abel, spoke of his admiration for Ross and covered a dancefloor fave Good Times by Chic. Rather fittingly, later in the evening when Ross joined her band making a grand entrance, to rapturous applause, she opened with I’m Coming Out - a collaboration with Chic’s Nile Rodgers.

This then led to a joyous tour of The Supremes’ best hits, of course fronted by Ross, with showstopper after showstopper coming in the opening period of the concert. Baby Love into Stop! In the Name of Love (where all in attendance raised their hands as sassily as possible) and You Can't Hurry Love were just wonderful.

Ross, one of music’s true divas, was accompanied by a 14-piece ensemble band but in fact there were actually over 10,000 backing singers in the audience all playing their part - the crowd were ridiculously loud at times. This is something which seemed to humble Ms Ross who on at least one occasion looked to wipe away a tear. Throughout the show, part of her Thank You tour, the world famous singer spoke of how much she loved her fans and being in Leeds on tour.

Sometimes when performers make these admissions it can feel a little hollow and transparent but, in this instance, there was a sense of gratitude and clear sentiment from the Detroit star - who has sold over 100m albums. And, her voice was incredibly impressive, although maybe this is to be expected as she’s still only 47 after all...

A loose fact she joked with her audience about. She’s actually 78 and has been performing since the age of 14. Later in the evening, we got a mix of Ross' biggest solo hits and collaborations as well as a couple covers. I’m Still Waiting, Upside Down and I Will Survive being just some of the night's highlights.

The musical great’s band were also brilliant and effortlessly filled for time as Ross exited the stage for her four costume changes. If you are in any doubt, the frocks were undoubtedly fabulous. The occasion was just full of fun and you couldn't want for more at Leeds First Direct Arena on Wednesday.

Ross probably wouldn’t describe the show, or the night’s preceding one in Manchester, as such but the performance was something of a warm-up for her massive legends slot, in front of hundreds of thousands, at Glastonbury later this month. Once again, based on Ross’ Leeds performance and greatest hits set, the Eavis family might well have pulled off another masterstroke with their legends booking. It had been hard to see anything eclipsing Lionel Richie and Dolly Parton’s previous sets, both stuff of Pilton folklore, but on this form it is likely Ross will be one of the highlights of Glasto 2022.

Diana Ross will be heading to Worthy Farm to play the legends slot at Glastonbury later this month

Not least because of that purposeful attention the star has clearly given to her audience during this run of UK shows. While screens showed montages of Ross throughout the years there was also a camera floating around the crowd all night with the masses displayed on screen - it was always a sea of smiles (this reviewer’s ugly mug did feature twice which, admittedly, was difficult for all concerned).

As the show went on, we had audience members screaming out declarations of marriage and love for the disco queen. While, in the encore, there was quite a tender couple of minutes where Ross asked for a chair to be brought out and the house lights raised.

Something she regularly does during her Las Vegas concerts she spoke, seated centre stage, to the audience and answered some of their questions. It concluded in a rather touching moment where she spoke to a fan on the front row, who’d she noticed had been dancing with everything he’d got, all night, who asked if Ross and her band would do a rendition of It’s My Turn.

You can watch Diana Ross' interaction with a Leeds fan below

After a little conversation with those behind her, Ross, duly obliged and it was so apparent that moment made that fan’s night - if not his year. It is mighty impressive too performing an unplanned song off the cuff too.

Hopefully there will be a tender moment like this, complimented by an ridiculously infectious supply of disco classics, that will go viral after Ross’ Glasto appearance - which will be televised to millions.

In short, if you are off to Worthy Farm in a few weeks, then don’t miss the musical great that is Diana Ross.

Diana Ross adds New York, Atlantic City dates to ‘Thank You’ summer tour

US musician Diana Ross performs on the Pyramid Stage during day five of Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 26, 2022 in Glastonbury, England.

The Motown legend has added more dates to her previously announced five-concert tour.

Fresh off headlining the Glastonbury Festival and serenading Queen Elizabeth for the Platinum Jubilee celebration, Ross will sing her signature hits such as “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and Supremes classics alongside music from her new “ Thank You ” album at casino shows in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Then comes a Boston theater gig and her long-awaited return to Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

US musician Diana Ross performs on the Pyramid Stage during day five of Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 26, 2022 in Glastonbury, England.

The strings of shows, which also include the Minnesota State Fair (on Sept. 3) are scheduled ahead of her six-show residency in Las Vegas.

Boch Center Wang Theatre in Boston (Sept. 8), Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City (Sept. 9) and Wind Creek Event Center are late additions to the mini tour the 78-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer first announced in June.

Ross wrote on Twitter this week: “I’m so excited to be back HOME in the US. To always ‘LET LOVE LEAD THE WAY.’ Looking forward to seeing you all. More dates are being announced so stay tuned!”

“We are thrilled to have the incomparable Diana Ross take the stage here at Ocean,” Ocean Casino Resort marketing chief Kelly Burke told The Daily News on Wednesday. “As one of Atlantic City’s leading entertainment destinations we acknowledge the importance of offering compelling concerts year-round, and what better way to extend the summer than with an international icon such as Ms. Ross.” Tickets for the newly announced shows go on sale July 29.

Ross’ latest music release, “ Turn Up The Sunshine ” (a collaboration with Tame Impala, and featured on the “Minions: The Rise of Gru” soundtrack) peaked at No. 22 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Airplay chart earlier this summer — becoming her 30th Top 40 solo hit.

According to Billboard, the groovy, up-tempo Jack Antonoff-produced track was her highest debut on the chart and best placement as a lead artist since 1989.

The iconic diva — whose lengthy list of hits spanning six decades include “Where Did I Love Go,” “ Love Hangover ,” “I’m Coming Out,” “Endless Love,” and “Missing You” — will close out the brief “Thank You” trek at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on Sept. 13.

And then off to Sin City she goes: Ross will conduct a six-concert residency at Las Vegas’ Encore Theatre at Wynn from Sept. 21 through Oct. 1.

Today's vivacious energy may arrive at any moment -- thankfully, it should be easily worked with. The Moon jumps into mercurial Gemini at 4:36 am EDT, giving us the urge to exchange ideas. This will be amplified when the Moon goes on to trine transformative Pluto in free-thinking Aquarius. Luna also tumbles into back-to-back conjunctions to lucky Jupiter and messenger Mercury, reminding us how far we can go with a little bit of optimism and openness to aid us in our endeavors.

Just about anything seems possible on a day like this! There is one potent angle after another overhead as messenger Mercury trines transformative Pluto, then goes on to conjoin lucky Jupiter, supplying us with plenty of positive ambition. The Sun will then conjoin alluring Venus in Gemini at 11:32 am EDT, casting a veil of loveliness over all our interactions. The day will wind down with the Moon conjoining eccentric Uranus, so one final surprise may still be in the cards.

On ‘Thank You,’ Diana Ross Wants to Pump. You. Up.

By David Browne

David Browne

Diana Ross ’ return to the pop landscape — her first record of newly written material, not covers, in over 20 years — sounds familiar, and there’s little doubt it was intended that way. In the years after she left the Supremes, Ross reached transcendent levels with billowy pop meant to uplift and inspire, whether on the dance floor (“I’m Coming Out,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”) or in more solitary moments (“Reach Out and Touch [Somebody’s Hand],” “Theme from Mahogany [Do You Know Where You’re Going To]”) .  Throughout the self-help-era Seventies era, she proudly served as head counselor.

She and the army of songwriters and producers who helped make Thank You seem well aware that those tracks — along with other moments, like the buoyantly discombobulated “Upside Down” or largely forgotten minor hits like “Remember Me” — remain Ross’ most enduring work on her own. On Thank You , Team Ross assertively aims to recapture that vibe for the Soul Cycle era. Be they ballads or dance-floor throwdowns, the songs glisten with disco strings, sky’s-the-limit choruses, and super-crisp beats. Over them, Ross again returns to her role as pop therapist:  “Jump off the edge/And find out where you land/Go take the lead/And teach the world to dance,” she sings, in one typical example, or, elsewhere,  “Lookin’ all around us/There’s so much potential/A little hope could inspire/If we ignite the passion, all to desire/That little spark becomes a fire.” You almost expect to be charged a membership fee for each listening session.

Those sentiments, which pretty much drive every one of the 13 tracks on Thank You , can feel oddly impersonal, as if Ross isn’t conveying hard-earned life experience of her own but offering her fans a pep talk. (And given the last year and a half we’ve all had, maybe they need it.) From start to finish, she conveys them in a voice that sounds as airbrushed as some of the words; even though she’s 77, it’s hard to detect  a single lived-in crack in her delivery. It’s all part of the strange deja-vu experience that is  Thank You . The songs feel familiar, as if they’ve even assembled from parts of previous hits. (There’s more than a little “Endless Love” in something like “The Answer’s Always Love”). Even some of lyrics here and there — “You say I’m just a dreamer,” “The first time I saw your face” — almost seem designed to evoke classic old-school pop hits by other artists of her heyday.

All that said, there’s still an inordinate deal of pleasure to be taken in music that wants to sweep you up and revel in sonic bliss, whether you’ve emerged from a still-lingering pandemic or not. You won’t find a more ebullient resurrection of the Studio 54 era than “Tomorrow,” and “In Your Heart” brings to mind the meditative dance tracks Madonna explored in the mid to late Nineties. During those moments of feather-bed glory, Thank You recalls a time when pop was proud to be pop , not therapy sessions set to simmer-level rhythms and nebulous hooks. Ross isn’t preaching about love hangovers, but she’s still looking to cure a few modern ills.

Diana Ross takes Austin crowd higher in hit-filled set with Music Legacy Tour at ACL Live

T o no one’s shock, Diana Ross has picked up a few untouchable skills. Nobody drags a fabulous coat around the stage like she does. Few can pull off sequined chartreuse like the original dream girl. And no one, I mean no one, connects with their fans like The Boss.

Ross brought her Music Legacy Tour to ACL Live on Tuesday and treated Austin to a nostalgic evening of greatest hits (and a couple newer songs from her 2021 album “Thank You,” too). The vibes were silly, the room was packed and the mountains just weren’t darn high enough.

Here are four things you missed if you weren’t at Ross’ show.

Diana Ross deserves to be worshiped like the diva that she is

When the concert started, the band broke out into horn-heavy fanfare. “Are you ready for The Boss?” the two backup singers rang out like Greek muses. You’d think Cecil B. DeMille directed the evening.Ross came out to “I’m Coming Out,” natch, her platinum-certified party-starter from 1980. It’s a gay rights anthem, too, which wasn’t remarked upon Tuesday, but the star’s folding fan was color-coordinated with that chartreuse gown. What an ally.

Motown Records signed The Supremes in 1961, and Ross’ onstage magic has endured those 63 years without losing a bit of shine. On songs like “More Today Than Yesterday,” she iconically stuck her arms out like she was flying on the bow of the Titanic. Any good impersonator knows that to channel Ross, you need to periodically brush your mane back from your face with gentle fingers; the O.G. also knows this, and obliged often. Her performance style is still smiley and sweet, especially on Supremes numbers like “Baby Love.”

And Ross was funny, too. She flashed a bicep when a song invoked strength and rubbed her tummy a little on “Love Child.” By the end of the night, she was goofing around with a hot pink feather boa on top of her head while singing “I Will Survive.”

“If I can move like this and I’m 47 …” she joked while stirring the audience into dance. In recent years, a few old-school divas have received late-career appreciation and gotten well-deserved flowers. Stevie Nicks hung out with Haim and starred on “American Horror Story.” Cher stole the “Mamma Mia” sequel out from under Meryl Streep. And well, Dolly Parton is more famous than she’s ever been — just count how many Catholic-style saint candles bear her blonde bouffant at any given gift shop.

Any conversation about living legends still shining in the celestial firmament must include chart-smashing polymath Ms. Ross. After decades of blazing trails for pop stars and Black women in music, not a single sequin is out of place.

Few singers have amassed quite the songbook of Diana Ross.

As the name of Ross’ tour implies, she put her legacy front and center. Tuesday’s concert included a few Supremes hits at the top. She punctuated “Stop! In the Name of Love” with an outstretched palm like the Motown days never ended.

There were tastes of the 1970s — a groovy bit of “Love Hangover,” a disco pick-me-up with “The Boss” and a ballad-tastic rendition of “Touch Me In the Morning,” the lyrics of which seemed a fitting thesis for a night of memories. “We don't have tomorrow/ But we had yesterday,” indeed.Fans of Ross’ film work got to enjoy beloved tunes from “Mahogany,” “The Wiz” and “Lady Sings the Blues.” To represent that last one, which netted Ross a best actress Oscar nomination for playing Billie Holiday, she selected “Don’t Explain.” It was the highlight of the night. The Holiday cover let Ross embrace a smokier side, her voice an ember burning strong in a pile of lovelorn ashes. And like a true diva, she took advantage of the song’s piano solo to don a new feathered cloak and dab a hanky on her brow.

For an all-to-brief moment, Ross took us to 1995 with “Take Me Higher,” performed as part of a medley. If there was one missed opportunity, it was giving a short, straightforward rendition of that glorious club single. In the era of “Renaissance,” how nice would it have been to revel in that slice of sweaty dance floor pop?

(OK, if there were two missed opportunities, then the second was not performing “Turn Up the Sunshine,” a 2022 collab with Tame Impala from a “Minions” movie soundtrack, of all things. It’s a dope song.)

Tuesday’s concert was a family affair

About midway through the show, Ross brought out her eldest daughter, Rhonda Ross, a singer-songwriter who travels with the star on tour. They did a sweet duet on “Count On Me,” a song Rhonda wrote for her mom.

Mama Ross let her daughter take the spotlight during a costume change. She performed four songs — examples of what she calls “motivational music.” Rhonda Ross had plenty of brio on the stage, but it was a tough spot to be in, following some of the best pop classics ever written with coffeehouse poetry.

The energy in the audience notably dipped before Ross returned to bring things home, sparkling in a gown the color of pink Champagne and a billowing, cotton-candy coat. By “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” Ross had the crowd fully back.

The fans and Diana Ross share a Supreme bond

And Ross really, really had that crowd. The super fans showed up to ACL Live, and she met them with a love that felt genuine and generous. At moments, she made intentional eye contact with fans. “I see you,” she said often. “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” was not just a song title for the singer, either.

During a rollicking “Upside Down,” a fan gave Ross a bouquet. The singer juggled it in her hands with a mic and a fan.

After chiding the audience to dance, she brought one woman up on stage to “show them how it’s done.” A little hip-shaking led into a lovely hug.

During “Ease On Down the Road,” two ladies next to me in their own sequined outfits took each other’s arms, and they strutted down imaginary yellow bricks in the balcony of ACL Live. Another woman in my row, who danced the whole night, told me that she was in elementary school when she first saw Ross perform as part of The Supremes.

Ross ended the night with “Thank You,” the title track from her latest album. The level to which the star — again, an American icon with a career that spans six decades — made herself available to the concert-goers was touching.

One person in the front row took Ross’ hand and kissed it. Several folks handed her records to autograph, which she did. She passed one person her microphone while she signed his treasure. (They showed superhuman restraint and didn’t speak into it.) Ross held out one album’s cover to the crowd. From the cheap seats, it looked like 1970’s “Everything Is Everything,” featuring a 20-something Ross in a sparkly nude bodysuit. She laughed a “get a load of this kid” laugh.Earlier in the evening, Ross said, “You guys know I’ve got a birthday coming up. I’m turning 80.” The crowd roared. She said she preferred to turn that numeral upside down and make it into an infinity sign.

“They’re going to have to drag me off the stage,” she said.
