Within the port there are three modern cruise ship facilities, the original at HafenCity in the re-developed old warehouse area and since 2010 a second at Altona in the re-developed area of the old fish dock. The Hafen City terminal is within walking distance of the downtown area of Hamburg.

Since 2015 The Cruise center 3 is also in operation in the port area of Steinwerder, right in the heart of the Port of Hamburg. The berth at Kronprinzkai is able to accommodate the next generation of cruise ships can dock there. Bus stop about 500m away from the terminal. The Water bus stop is nearby (not on weekends).

Some large cruise ships are using the Altona Terminal. It is not within walking distance to town, but has a very good water bus connection ( #62 ) to the Landungsbrucken wharf, where all hop on/off buses are as well as harbor tours are starting. The Water bus stop is only 20 meters from the aft of your ship and goes every 15 minutes in day time and every 30 minutes till' midnight. 1.30 euro per trip or 6 euros for all day including all other transportation in Hamburg. The water bus in it self is already a nice site-seeing boat, and a full round trip is fun!

Most cruise lines also run shuttles (10 Euro), to the central station. Taxi is about 13 euro each way.

Distance to Hamburg Airport (Fuhlsbüttel): 9.5 km.

The s-bahn train station is located directly below the airport terminal and the trains depart every 15mins. The journey to the main train station in the city center takes about 20 min's, to Altona station about 15mins.

Sightseeing:

Three rivers - the Elbe, Alster and Bille - along with a scenic grid of narrow canals called Fleete traverse Hamburg. As if that isn't enough water, the city center boasts its very own lakes - the Inner and Outer Alster Lakes. The city center is home to most of Hamburg's main attractions. This half-moon area, which arches north of the Elbe, is bordered by a curve of roads whose names all end in wall (ramparts) and which mark the limits of the old city

Cutting through the middle is the Alsterfleet, a canal that separates the Altstadt (Old City) from the Neustadt (New City). Feeling lost? Look out for the bronze, helmet-shaped Michaeliskirche , an easily seen landmark, south of the city center.

Hamburg is best visited in spring or summer. A typical Hamburg visit includes a tour of the city hall and the grand church St. Michaelis (called the Michel), and visiting the old warehouse district (Speicherstadt) and the harbor promenade (Landungsbrücken). Sightseeing buses connect these points of interest.

Tourist offices are at the train station and at the harbor at St. Pauli Landungsbrücken between jetty 4 and 5.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

From Landungsbrücken you can make boat tours into the harbor. These Hafenrundfahrten are available from various companies and take around an hour. Big ships provide more comfort, but smaller ships also go though the Speicherstadt. Both are well worth the money. Inquire about English language tours (Often at noon time).

Also at the Landungsbrücken you will find the u and s bahn station:

Take the s1,s2,or s3 to Jungfernstieg, the lively center of Hamburg on the Alster.

or take the u3 to Baumwall to Hafencity , currently Europe’s largest inner-city development project – is a blueprint for the development of a European city on the waterfront. For a visit with an eye cast towards the past, have a look around the Speicherstadt. The listed buildings now house leisure activities such as the Minatur Wunderland with fascinating toy railway worlds, and Hamburg Dungeon . Museums can also be found in the Speicherstadt. There is German Customs Museum (Deutsche Zollmuseum), which tells the tale of customs and smuggling in Hamburg, or the International Maritime Museum with thousands of ship models and nautical charts.

Hop on/off buses.

Taxis are dependable, but expensive.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

Many cruise lines offer excursions to Berlin, a rather long trip. Check the weather forecast for Berlin before you book. Berlin is stunning on a beautiful day!

Shopping and Food

The main shopping area of Hamburg is the Mönckebergstraße in the center of the city. Take the subway to either central station, Rathaus (town hall) or Mönckebergstraße. Also check the side-street Spitalerstraße. West of town hall towards Gaensemarkt are the more pricey shops like Hugo Boss. Shops are mostly open from 10AM to 8PM and to 10PM on Thursdays and Fridays.

In Germany snacks (Schnellimbiss) are widely available, especially Bock wurst (boiled sausage), Bratwurst (grilled sausage) and Curry wurst (spiced sausage), as well as fries and hamburgers

German fast food is cheap, hearty and diverse; there are a number of sausage stands, imbisses and specialty stands; you have many options from which choose. Many of the fast food is of Turkish origin, this food is very popular for being cheap and healthy. The German's favorite Turkish fast food is the Doner Kebab; a thick pita filled generally with either chicken or beef complemented with fresh French fries and salad.

Film and Cinemas Drive-In Cinemas

It’s been years since Hamburg’s last drive-in cinema closed its gates. Now, due to COVID-19, the idea is gaining traction again.

Cars parked in front of a outdoor movie screen

Drive-In Cinemas - Get your dose of culture even in Corona times

Although drive-ins will have to meet strict guidelines, these cinemas of a bygone era are officially allowed to open in Hamburg. Their contribution to filling the void felt by many in the wake of the pandemic will be significant. After all, a night at the drive-in is a pretty safe way to take in some culture again. If guests stay in their cars during, before and after screenings, the virus has no chance of ruining a perfect night at the movies.

Luckily, the city of Hamburg has some perfect locations for setting up temporary drive-in cinemas. Not only do places like the Trabrennbahn race tracks or Heiligengeistfeld square offer the necessary space, but they also have a long history of hosting large-scale events. While Trabrennbahn is known for its open air concerts, Heiligengeistfeld is famous for hosting the Hamburg DOM , as well as public screenings of international football matches.

Safe, cosy and suited to your needs

Drive-in cinemas are truly the perfect event-solution for social distancing. Firstly, you’ll never have to worry about being seated behind the tallest person in the room. But even better, audio tracks are sent directly to car radios - not only reducing noise levels but, theoretically, allowing viewers to choose their preferred language version individually.

It’s now up to movie-goers, to behave responsibly and make sure that we can enjoy great films until the end of the pandemic. Some of the requirements viewers must adhere to are:

  • Tickets must be bought remotely and without interpersonal contact
  • Attendees must remain seated in their cars, with the exception of bathroom breaks. Minimum distances of 1.5m must be kept at all times
  • Audio tracks may only be transmitted via radio frequencies

Drive-In Cinemas in Hamburg

Oberhafen Drive-In Cinema

This small drive-in cinema offers room for 30 automobiles. Screened movies are announced on-site. Tickets are 10 Euro per car.

Trabrennbahn Bahrenfeld

The large-scale drive-in cinema on the Trabrennbahn Bahrenfeld race tracks will open soon. See the programme for additional information in German.

Autokino Heiligengeistfeld

The Autokino (lit. ‘car cinema’) on Heiligengeistfeld square is scheduled to start activities in June. The vast area has enough room for up to 500 cars. Further information about the programme will follow in the near future.

Cruise Inn Hamburg

The Cruise Center Steinwerder will be used as a drive-in cinema and concert location starting in June, 2020. The CRUISE INN – Once in a Livetime series will present a string of concerts and cultural events in a one-of-a-kind location. So far, a number of events have been confirmed.

Outdoor Cine

This package is meant for businesses planning to turn their property into a makeshift outdoor cinema. From assembly and disassembly, to screening and event management, everything is included. This is the perfect idea for your company’s summer party.

For more Corona-related information, please see the our article on What's Important to Stay Safe .

About Drive-In Cinemas

Drive-in Cinemas have long been associated with the USA, where, starting in 1933, they flourished for much of the 20th century. However, although they were a staple of American culture in the 50s and 60s, they have mostly disappeared since the 90s. In Europe and Germany, this form of entertainment never fully caught on. Although there have been some drive-in cinemas since the 1960s, these have historically been located in direct proximity of American army bases. One exception was the drive-in in Hamburg Billstedt, which hosted movie screenings until 2003.

Frontal view of the town hall in Hamburg, Germany

Hamburg has more museums than almost any other city in Europe, but the best way to gain an education is by visiting the historical sights themselves. Visit the Rathaus City Hall, with a 19th-century facade making for a perfect backdrop for selfies. Then, ascend the steps of the baroque Church of St. Michael to enjoy a panorama from 432 feet in the air.

Toast the World

Your Hamburg cruise probably won't stop in the middle of the night, but you can still appreciate the fun of the Sankt Pauli nightlife district. Many of its bars are open during daytime hours. Want to learn about the roots of the local brew? Check out Groninger Privatbrauerei, a baroque building where they brew a much-loved Pils.

A franzbrotchen pastry in Hamburg, Germany

Local Cuisine

Food in Hamburg has nothing to do with what you know as hamburgers. Herring is the most common fish here — it's served marinated in vinegar and fried as Brathering , a popular choice for lunch or dinner. Hamburger Hummersuppe , on the other hand, is a creamy lobster-based soup, while Hamburg sweets include sugary Franzbrotchen pastry and Hamburger Speck candies.

An assortment of souvenir beer steins in Germany

In addition to being cosmpolitan and chic, Moenckebergstrasse is Hamburg's most iconic shopping street. Stop in at the aptly named Art of Hamburg near the harbour to find forward-thinking fashions and handcrafted bags and other accessories during your Germany cruise. Take a trip back in time at Walter Eisenberg der Mutzenmacher, a classic hat shop, or take home an ornate beer stein.

Hamburg on a cruise: what to see and do

Cruising journal , the international portal for cruise ship reviews, takes you to hamburg what to do in hamburg to make the most of your time during a cruise stopover in the cruising journal tips., hamburg offers plenty of little cultural delights to be explored and experienced. take a tour around the harbour or a stroll through an art gallery and take in the magnificent sight of the city from above as you explore this city..

Hamburg  is a magnificent city that owes its name to Hammaburg , the castle that was built on the banks of river Elbe to defend the area from Slavic incursions. A city with a rich history, reflected in its buildings and landscapes, Hamburg  has many cultural adventures to offer and is the perfect city to visit while on a cruise.

Hamburg

How to get to Hamburg

MSC Cruises  includes Hamburg in most of its Northern Europe itineraries; it will be easy to find the one that suits you best. A bit more variety is offered by Costa Cruises , with itineraries that span from Northern to Western Europe.

If you want to focus on the Scandinavian peninsula in your cruise, another option is the Hurtigruten , a Norwegian ferry line that also includes Hamburg in its stopovers.

The Hamburger Kunsthalle  is an art museum and exhibition centre. It offers permanent pieces available to the public all year round – such as Da Vinci sketches and paintings by Manet – as well as temporary exhibitions displayed for a limited time, covering both classic art pieces and modern art.

Another exhibition centre that is certainly worth a visit is the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg , dedicated to design and fine and applied arts. The museum boasts with over 500,000 international pieces in its permanent collection, spanning from ancient to modern art, particularly from Europe and East Asia.

Hamburg

St. Michael’s

St. Michael’s  is one of the most important baroque churches in northern Germany and, as such, is a worthy stop in your tour of the city. There is no entry fee, but the church accepts offers on a voluntary basis. On the inside, you can admire the architectural details and the church’s majestic organ. There are also options to visit the crypt, which includes the history of the Church’s building process, and the steeple, which grants an impressive view of the city from above.

Boat Tour of the Harbour

With Maritime Circle Line , you can explore Hamburg’s harbour and its museums, galleries and places of interest aboard one of their vessels. The tour is a hop-on hop-off, circular itinerary, so you may start anywhere you like and use it as you please during the day to visit various locations without worrying about timetables.

Concert Hall

Elbphilharmonie , Hamburg’s concert hall, is an architectural masterpiece that expertly blends the traditional red brick structure at the base with the modern steel and glass curves of the floors above it.

The Plaza, the floor that connects the brick structure with the upper glass floors, is accessible with an escalator directly from the ground floor and offers a bird’s-eye view of the city and the harbour below, free of charge.

Hamburg

Another attraction to keep in mind in Hamburg is Miniatur Wunderland, with its tiny cities and interesting workshops. You can also take a stroll under the river Elbe through the Alter Elbtunnel and grab a bite at Frau Moeller’s, a bar that serves traditional German dishes, or at the Opitz – traditional but a bit more sophisticated.

MS Hamburg Wiki

The vessel (Wismar yard/hull number 451) was constructed by MTW Schiffswerft GmbH (MV Werften Wismar) in Wismar Germany . The physical construction started on September 5, 1995 (with the keel-layin ceremony) and ended on June 17, 1997 (with the delivery ceremony to the Munich -based shipowner Conti Holding GmbH). The ship's launch/float out from drydock was on October 30, 1996.

Between 1997 and 2012, the ship was named "C Columbus" and operated under charter by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises .

The powerplant is based on four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 6L32) with combined output 10,56 MW. The propulsion system is based on two CPPs/controllable pitch propellers.

MS Hamburg refurbishments review

During drydock refurbishment 2020 (at Lisnave Shipyard, Setubal Portugal), all staterooms and public areas received new carpeting. Redesigned and renovated were Palm Garden Lounge ( deck 6 forward), Lobby Reception ( deck 3 ) and Wine Bar ( deck 5 ), which was additionally expanded by using the Boutique Shop's space. On Lido Deck (deck 6), the sundeck area received new flooring and a new pool bar was installed.

The ship's previous drydock (in 2018) was also at Lisnave Shipyard. During the USD 20 million project Plantours conducted regular technical maintenance works as well as extensive technical modifications and modernization. During the drydocking (April 2 - May 1) were added French Balconies/infinity windows to 42x passenger staterooms. The electric-powered windows are slide-down opening and when lowered open to a glass railing.

During the next scheduled drydocking, the vessel will receive Plantours Kreuzfahrten's new livery and logo (announced in March 2024) introduced to celebrate the company's 35th anniversary.
