Must-visit Places in Amsterdam

Here are some of the major tourist attractions that you should include in your travel itinerary while booking an Amsterdam trip package:

Anne Frank House

A trip to Amsterdam cannot be complete without visiting this place. Anne Frank was a little Jewish girl who was a victim of the Holocaust during the Second World War. Anne and her family went into hiding for two years to avoid Nazi persecution, and she used to keep a diary of her experiences during that time. Later, that documentation got published as a book named ‘The Diary of a Young Girl’. She lived in the same house for those two years. Currently, it is one of the major tourist attractions in Amsterdam. This building also houses a museum where you can get a glimpse into her life.

Van Gogh Museum

If you are an art enthusiast and want to see some of the finest art pieces, this museum is a great pick. This is also one of the most famous museums in the entire Netherlands and is visited by approximately 1.5 million visitors in a year. Here, you will get to see more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 700 letters from Van Gogh. All these things will give you enough idea about Van Gogh’s life and his artistic capabilities.

Vondel Park

Vondel Park is one of the most famous parks in Amsterdam. It allures thousands of visitors every day and is equally popular among tourists and locals. This park is also home to some of the best restaurants and cafes in the city, including the Blauwe Theehuis, Cafe Vertigo, Vondelpark 3, etc. Other than this, this park also has an open-air theatre and a famous rose garden, which is known for having more than 70 types of roses in the park. In short, this is one of the best places to go in Amsterdam.

Red Light District

There is no denying the fact that Amsterdam is famous for having so many scenic places that you can explore throughout the day. However, the city is also known for its lively nightlife. Home to a number of amazing pubs and other party places, the Red Light District is absolutely a paradise for young people. Here, you get the chance to be a part of some of the most lavish parties in town. Whether you just want to enjoy the ambience or plan to dance the night away, this is just the right place to be.

EYE-Film Museum

This is one of the most interesting places to visit in Amsterdam. This awe-inspiring museum is housed in a building that resembles a spaceship and is located on the main waterfront of the city. This is an important place for the Dutch film industry, as several film screenings are organised here. If you are someone with an interest in films, this is a place that you shouldn’t miss.

Flower Market

Locally known as the Bloemenmarkt, this is another addition to the list of must-visit places in Amsterdam. Located along the Singel Canal, this place can instantly lift anyone’s mood, as beautiful, fresh flowers are all you can see around you. Although you can find different types of beautiful flowers here, tulips are among the most common ones.

Built in the 17th century, this is one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in the city. The Canal Belt is an area that is home to a number of old, rustic houses and quaint cafes. In 2011, it was also placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Here, you can choose to explore the gorgeous canals of Amsterdam by taking a boat ride. Or, you can find several small, flower-adorned bridges where you can go for a walk in the morning or evening.

Amsterdam tour packages faqs.

Q. What to pack for Amsterdam? A. Get comfortable clothes and shoes and some waterproof clothing. Do keep some cash in hand and carry your maestro cards. Do not forget to keep the travel adapter, so that you can keep your devices alive and a pair of nice headphones. Q. What is an ideal budget for an Amsterdam trip? A. The basic price for an Amsterdam trip costs more than 1 lakh rupees. The price of the package depends on the number of people, the duration of your stay, the places you have planned to visit and the type of accommodation and food you have chosen. Before planning a visit, do get the exact idea of the price. Q. How many days are enough to explore Amsterdam? A. The ideal number of days you should stay in Amsterdam depends on your travel plans. Many visitors, however, find that they can see all of the sights and get a taste of the culture in around four days. Q. What is the famous cuisine of Amsterdam? A. Amsterdam has a diverse population, and the city's food reflects this diversity. The food of Amsterdam is a fusion of South American, Nordic, Indonesian, French, and Chinese dishes. There's also a hint of American influence, particularly in the Centrum borough. There are various places that both locals and visitors enjoy in large numbers, including Bitterballen, Haring, Poffertjes, Stamppot, Satay, Stroopwafel, Pannekoeken, and much more. Q. What time do the trams in Amsterdam run? A. Most of Amsterdam's public transportation services, including trams, metro, and buses, operate from 6 a.m. to 12.30 a.m. You can also travel by the local night bus service, which begins at 1 a.m. Q. What is the mode of transport in Amsterdam? A. Most Amsterdam packages come with ample cycling tours, for cycling is a way of life in this canal-dissected capital of the Netherlands. Outside of that the public transport system of Amsterdam comprises boats, a popular way of getting around its 150-odd waterways that divide the city into 90 small islands. You can rely on its extensive network of trams, buses, and metros which including the ferries are owned by the local council. There are presently over 16 tram routes, five metro lines aside from private-operated water taxis, water bus and boat sharing service. Q. What is the local language of Amsterdam? A. Skimming through Amsterdam tour packages and wondering you cannot speak a word of Dutch? Fret not, because even though Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands, majority of its residents can speak in fluent English other than their native language. So, for an English-speaking individual travelling around in Amsterdam should not be a problem. Q. Which is the best time to visit Amsterdam? A. The spring and the fall are the best seasons to go around in Amsterdam. Either visit between April and May or choose the window between September and November to visit this beautiful city when the summer crowds have receded and the temperatures are milder and the streets emptier leaving you with more elbow room to browse the sites. But for absolutely low accommodation prices choose the peak winter months when snow lies piled over the narrow buildings lining the canals and the many bicycles tethered to padlocks alongside them. Q. Are there direct flights from New Delhi to Amsterdam? A. From New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport there is no direct flight to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, the Netherlands’ main international airport. Most airlines operate connecting flights that come with one to two stopovers with an average journey time of 13 hours. Finnair has flights to Schiphol after a layover in Helsinki, Air India halts in Rome before arriving in Amsterdam, Etihad Airways halts in Abu Dhabi before continuing its journey to Schiphol. Q. How do I get a visa for a holiday in Amsterdam? A. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa to travel to Amsterdam among other European countries that fall in the Schengen zone. You need to apply for your Schengen visa three months ahead of your trip. The latest time is 15 days before your date of departure that you can file for a Schengen visa. You need to further attend the interview proceeding your visa application. Pay the requisite visa fee and wait until you visa is processed; this could take up to 15 days. Q. What are the popular museums and galleries in Amsterdam? A. The largest collection of paintings by Amsterdam’s very own Vincent Van Gogh can be found at the Van Gogh Museum. A few blocks further is the Rijkmuseum which houses masterpieces such as the Kitchen Maid by Vermeer and Night Watch by Rembrandt outside of an array of gems from the Golden Age. For more on Rembrandt who epitomised the Dutch Golden Age and brought out the dramatic light and shadow effect, a style typical of him, head to the Museum het Rembrandthuis. For more masterpieces, sample the exhibits at the Hermitage Amsterdam before rounding up the memorable Anne Frank House. Experience the trauma and horror of the German occupation during World War II at the Verzetsmuseum. If you have a little more time left at hand, do round up Joods Historisch Museum and the NEMO Science Museum. Q. What is the currency of Amsterdam and where can I get my money changed? A. Before you close one of the Amsterdam travel packages it is worth considering its local currency and the rate at which it can be converted. Euro is the currency of Amsterdam and 1 Euro comes up to about 80 Indian Rupees. It is advised to carry a little bit of Euro with you to get around locally such as pay your taxi fare, buy yourself a meal, buy a ticket etc. One way to change your local currency is by using your debit card in a local ATM to get the best exchange rate. You can also go to a Bureau de Change and get your local currency converted. You can’t change your money at banks because you need to have an account with them to use their services. Q. Does Amsterdam have white winter? A. The average winter temperature in Amsterdam hovers between 4 and -1 degree Celsius. Though you won’t be completely snowed in in Amsterdam, the city does receive its share of precipitation by way of both snow and rain. When its cold enough, you might see a dusting of snow on the canal banks, over the cycles parked on the side of the road and the benches on the streets. But it is far from a winter wonderland, for it hardly receives snowstorms or blizzards. If you are visiting in this lean season ensure you carry raincoats and boots, an umbrella, woolens and rain jackets. Netherlands especially Amsterdam has its own unique charm in the cold months. Q. Which is the tulip season in Amsterdam? A. The tulip season in the Netherlands heralds the beginning of spring when the colourful bulbs stretching over acres accompanied with the warming weather bring in tourists, photographers and painters from all over the world. April is the month of tulips, and the time between mid-April and early May witnesses some truly incredible tulip blossoms. Keukenhof hosts the country’s greatest flower show every year when it opens for only two months in spring and showcases some of the best varieties of Dutch tulips, daffodils among other bulb flowers. From Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, Keukenhof is an easy day trip attracting travellers across age groups and occupation. You need to procure your tickets to visit the park ahead of landing there to beat the queues. Adding to the atmospherics of the park is a quaint windmill. Q. What is the local cuisine of Amsterdam like? A. Traditional Dutch food is an explosion of flavours and crunch. Few things you mustn’t leave Amsterdam without trying are the Bitterballen, deep-fried meatballs served with a mustard dip; Stroopwafel, a Dutch sweet treat that has two fine layers of waffle sandwiched with a sweet syrup; thick Dutch fries enjoyed with peanut satay or mayonnaise and onions; raw herring sandwiches with pickles and onion; Kibbeling, deep-fried cod or any other white fish served with a lemon wedge and herb dip, among an assortment of cheeses, breakfast cakes and vending machine croquettes.

Amsterdam: The Ultimate 3-Day Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands, is one of Europe’s great cities. Famous for its many canals and even more abundant bicycles, Amsterdam is an unmissable stop on any European tour and makes for a fantastic weekend trip for any travelers who are already in Europe.

Full of beautiful architecture, picturesque cobblestone streets, incredible artwork, and full of history, Amsterdam has something for everyone. Whilst you may have heard of Amsterdam’s nightlife scene including its famous Red-Light District, the city is so much more than a place for group boozy holidays.

amsterdam trip from india

I recently spent 3 days in Amsterdam and was blown away by how stunningly beautiful the city is. Mixed with the interesting history and the friendly locals, I am already planning my next visit. I cannot wait to return. Keep reading for all my top tips for 3 days in the Dutch capital.

Is 3 Days Enough In Amsterdam?

You might be asking if 3 days in Amsterdam is enough. Absolutely it is! 3 to 4 days is usually a good amount of time to spend in any city on a first visit. It is the perfect amount of time to settle into the city’s vibe and not feel too rushed when exploring the city.

Amsterdam is a smaller capital city than London or Paris but bigger than cities like Barcelona and Milan , so it is a walkable city. That said, Amsterdam has a lot of attractions and things to do, and you would find it a rush to see everything in 3 days. I always prefer to take things at a more relaxed and flexible pace. By not packing an itinerary fully, it allows you to still have the time to explore the bits you like further.

3 days in Amsterdam will give you the perfect introduction and still leave you with some sights to see when you inevitably return!

Amsterdam: Day One

Explore the jordaan neighborhood.

amsterdam trip from india

Start your day by exploring the beautiful neighborhood of The Jordaan. This district was originally a working-class area but is now one of the trendiest in the city. It is known for its picturesque canals, quaint streets, and vibrant atmosphere.

The area is part of Amsterdam’s Canal Belt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and is the perfect place to start your exploration of the city. Head to the area early to find deserted streets, perfect for taking those iconic shots of the city.

amsterdam trip from india

Head to Moods Coffee Corner for breakfast. The café offers a good range of breakfast items with quick and friendly service. The food is delicious, and you can even sit outside on a sunny day, enjoying views of the canal.

The Jordaan is also known for its boutique shops, art galleries, and vintage stores, making it the perfect area to do some shopping. The Noordermarkt hosts a popular weekly market where you can find all manner of things.

The best thing about the Jordaan neighborhood is the chance to explore Amsterdam without as many crowds, marveling at the beautiful homes and canals. Head to Het Brillenpaleis to see one of the prettiest buildings in the neighborhood. This eyewear shop is covered with ivy and in summer and fall comes alive with greenery, perfect for some stunning photos.

Amsterdam Tulip Museum

amsterdam trip from india

After exploring the Jordaan neighborhood, continue your day at the Amsterdam Tulip Museum, located within the same area. You could not come to Amsterdam without learning about one of its most popular products.

The Amsterdam Tulip Museum is a small shop and museum dedicated to the tulip. Located on Prinsengracht across the canal from the Anne Frank House, this is a great spot for learning about the origins of the tulip, the different varieties, and how it came to be a major export of The Netherlands.

Entry to the museum costs €5 and you will only need half an hour to explore but it is a great experience for learning about the tulip. Inside the store, there are plenty of tulip-related souvenirs to purchase. Imagine decorative items, pens, tote bags, ornaments, and artwork.

There are also tulip bulbs for sale but please check your country of origin’s restrictions on bringing in agricultural products. The museum shop sells bulbs that meet US and Canadian regulations but not UK regulations so check these carefully.

Anne Frank House

amsterdam trip from india

One of Amsterdam’s most famous and saddest tourist attractions is the Anne Frank House. This museum house is open to the public and is the site where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis in a secret annex during World War II.

Anne Frank is best known for her diary, ‘The Diary of a Young Girl,’ which was written whilst she was in hiding. The diary details their daily life and her experiences, thoughts, and emotions during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. It is one of the most widely read books in the world.

amsterdam trip from india

The museum features a variety of exhibits detailing Anne’s life, the history of the Holocaust, and the impact of discrimination and persecution. Visitors can see the secret annex where Anne and her family lived alongside original artifacts and photographs, offering a poignant experience.

The museum is open from 9 AM to 10 PM every day. Tickets cost €16 for adults, €7 for 10-17-year-olds and €1 for children under 10.

Pro-Tip : As one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, the Anne Frank House is extremely popular. Tickets are released every Tuesday at 10 AM CET for a visit six weeks later. You need to buy tickets in advance as these sell out quickly.

If you are planning a last-minute trip to Amsterdam and can’t get tickets, I highly recommend the Anne Frank Tour by Free Walking Tours Amsterdam. This two-hour tour gives you the history of Amsterdam under the Nazi occupation and explains the courageous acts of various people in many locations around the city, including the story of the Franks.

Canal Boat Tour

Amsterdam is the city of canals and with so many in the city, the best way to explore it is by taking a canal boat tour. Offering a unique perspective, you will get to see the city from the water.

One of the most striking things about Amsterdam is the beauty of its canal houses and picturesque bridges. Most canal tours will couple these panoramic views with informative audio commentary, explaining the history, architecture, and culture of the city.

amsterdam trip from india

There are so many different options for a canal boat tour. Many offer hop-on-hop-off tours, giving you great flexibility as to where you board. There are also evening cruises and themed tours further giving a unique perspective. I even saw a bottomless brunch pink-themed boat cruise if that is your thing!

With something for every preference, a canal boat tour is the perfect relaxing experience on an afternoon in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam: Day Two

amsterdam trip from india

One of Amsterdam’s imaginatively named churches, Westerkerk or Western Church in English is one of Amsterdam’s most famous landmarks. It was consecrated in 1631 and is intricately linked with the Dutch artist Rembrandt who is buried nearby.

The tower is the tallest church tower in Amsterdam, standing at 85 meters tall. The interior of the church has a spacious nave with elegant columns and large windows letting in lots of natural light.

Guided tours of the church are available, and visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views of the city. It is a great vantage point to look out over the city and start your second day.

amsterdam trip from india

Dam Square is the heart of Amsterdam. Located in the center of the city, the square is a natural meeting place for people and provides easy access to a range of sights.

Some of Amsterdam’s most important buildings are located in the square. In the center, you have the National Monument.

amsterdam trip from india

This white stone obelisk was erected in 1956 to commemorate the victims of World War II and is a focal point for national events as well as a meeting point for locals.

On the opposite side of the square, you will see the Royal Palace. This building dates to the 17 th century and was originally a city hall before being redesigned as the Royal Palace. Today it is a ceremonial residence of the Dutch royal family and is open for guided tours.

amsterdam trip from india

Finally, there is the Nieuwe Kerk or New Church in English. This is a Gothic-style church dating back to the 15 th century. It is no longer used as a church but hosts exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events throughout the year.

Walking Tour

One of my favorite things to do in any new city is to go on a walking tour. This way you learn about the history of the city and see the city through the eyes of a local. You often pick up some great recommendations and places to see that are off the beaten track.

Most walking tours start at Dam Square. If you are on a last-minute trip to Amsterdam, chances are you might not have been lucky enough to get a ticket to the Anne Frank House. There are many walking tours that will explain the history of the city during World War II that are a good substitute.

I went on three whilst I was in Amsterdam and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Whether you are interested in architecture , history or even food, there is a tour suited to your interests.

Van Gogh Museum

amsterdam trip from india

One of The Netherlands’ most famous painters, Van Gogh has a museum dedicated entirely to his works. Located in the Museumplein Park on the opposite side of the park to the Rijksmuseum, the museum is one of the most popular in the city.

The museum is home to the largest collection of art by Vincent Van Gogh in the world and houses hundreds of paintings, drawings, and letters. Many of Van Gogh’s most famous works are in the museum including the Sunflowers, The Bedroom, and many of his iconic self-portraits.

Similar to the Anne Frank House, this is an extremely popular museum, so it is important to book tickets in advance to not be disappointed. Tickets are €22 for adults and free for under 18s.

Red Light District

The Netherlands and Amsterdam are known for their liberal attitudes. Nowhere is this more evident than in the city’s Red Light District. One of Amsterdam’s most famous and unique neighborhoods, it is known for its legalized prostitution and vibrant nightlife. Whilst you may now be in Amsterdam for the party, it is still a place to experience.

The Red Light District is famous for its narrow streets, canals, and iconic, red-lit windows. Prostitution is legal in The Netherlands and the area is heavily regulated by the government, ensuring the health and safety of the workers.

As well as exploring the streets of the district, there are numerous coffee shops and bars; it is one of the most popular nighttime spots in the city. There are also historical sites such as the Oude Kerk (Old Church) and the Amsterdam Museum so there is plenty to see in the area as well as its famous windows.

Amsterdam: Day Three

Rijksmuseum.

amsterdam trip from india

The Rijksmuseum is The Netherlands’ answer to Paris’s Louvre or Madrid’s Prado Museum , being a celebration of Dutch art. Located next to Museumplein Park, the area is a hub for some of the city’s best art museums (the Van Gogh Museum is located in the same area!) and a great place to start your third day.

The museum houses an extensive collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings including famous pieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals. There are also numerous historical artifacts, decorative arts, and a vast amount of Asian art. You would need an entire morning to see everything in the museum!

amsterdam trip from india

The most famous piece of artwork in the museum is The Night Watch by Rembrandt. This huge painting depicts a group of city guardsmen and is known for its use of light and dynamic composition. It sits on the 2 nd floor of the museum and is a remarkable sight.

The building itself is also very impressive. There is a stunning library within the museum and a grand central hall. Upstairs there are impressive stained-glass windows in majestic halls adding to the grandeur of the place.

amsterdam trip from india

The museum is open from 9 AM to 5 PM daily and it is recommended that you book tickets in advance as it can fill up.

Nieuwmarkt translates as New Market in English and today is a bustling square with historic buildings, shops, and restaurants. It is a popular gathering point for locals and tourists.

The Nieuwmarkt was built in the 17 th century and was originally a marketplace for goods. Nowadays it is a great spot to grab some lunch, people watch, and browse the market stalls that are in the square. Heading there on Saturday, you will be greeted by an organic food market and the chance to try lots of different products.

Nearby you also have Amsterdam’s Chinatown. Home to various restaurants and shops, if you are looking for Asian food for lunch, you will find exactly what you are looking for here.

Tony’s Chocolonely Super Store

amsterdam trip from india

A quick pitstop for the chocolate lovers ! Tony’s Chocolonely is a Dutch chocolate brand known throughout the world for its ethical production and commitment to fair trade. Lucky for the chocolate lovers, they are based in Amsterdam and have a Willy Wonka-esque store.

Tony’s Chocolonely Super Store is free to enter (but you may need to queue!). Inside you will find information about the brand and its mission to create a slave-free chocolate industry. There is a huge wall of chocolate bars in all different varieties, and you can pull the lever to grab your own.

There is a multitude of different chocolate varieties, so you are guaranteed to find something you like. Also, there is lots of merchandise, including totes, mugs, and clothing.

You will only need 15 minutes to visit Tony’s, but it is a fun experience and a great excuse to buy some delicious ethical chocolate!

Centraal Station

Amsterdam Centraal, The Netherlands

After Tony’s, head north to the Centraal Station. Located on the banks of the River Ij, one of Amsterdam’s main rivers, this is the biggest railway station in Amsterdam. Chances are you will have arrived here on your initial journey into Amsterdam from the airport as it is a major transport hub.

The station itself is beautiful in a similar way to Valencia’s Estació del Nord and is worth a visit. It was opened in 1889 and has a blend of Gothic and Renaissance Revival styles. There is a grand façade, ornate decorations, and a distinctive clock tower.

Inside you will find spacious halls, intricate tile work, and beautiful stained glass windows. It is also the perfect departure point for the next stop on your list, regardless of what you choose!

Johan Cryuff Arena (Optional)

amsterdam trip from india

One for the football fans! If football is not your thing, you might want to stay in the city center and explore some more. You could even head to Amsterdam-Noord on the free ferry to explore the cute villages found across the River Ij. However, if you are into football head to the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Formerly known as the Amsterdam Arena, the stadium has since been renamed in honor of the Dutch legend, Johan Cryuff. The stadium is home to AFC Ajax, The Netherlands’ most successful club, the Dutch National Team, and is used for various music events. It is the largest stadium in The Netherlands.

The stadium can be easily accessed from Centraal Station via the Metro and offers visitors the chance to see all aspects of the stadium. You can either book a classic tour or a guided tour for more information. I did the guided tour, and it was excellent value for money.

The tour takes in both dressing rooms, the tunnel, the press room, the pitch, trophy room and you get the chance to sit in the manager’s chair as if you were the manager of Ajax yourself. There is also a team shop for all your souvenirs and a restaurant if you get hungry.

How Many Days Is OK for Amsterdam?

3 to 4 days is the perfect amount of time for a trip to Amsterdam. The city has plenty of attractions to keep you busy and 3 to 4 days will be enough days to see the major sights and start to delve a little deeper into Amsterdam life.

Of course, if you are staying longer, you will be able to see more of Amsterdam away from the major tourist attractions. Many of the major sights are located south of the River Ij which is where a lot of tourists will spend their time. Venturing over the river to Amsterdam Noord, will take you off the beaten track and give you the chance to explore cute villages and green spaces, showing a different side of the city.

Likewise, by staying longer, you will have the chance to venture out of the city and see more of this incredible country.

Is Paris Better Than Amsterdam?

How do you begin to compare two of Europe’s most famous cities?! Both Paris and Amsterdam have so many things to see and do that the question of which is better is entirely down to personal preference.

Paris has a rich history, incredible museums such as the Louvre , and many iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. Known for its romantic atmosphere, the city also boasts an incredible food scene, is home to some of the most famous fashion brands in the world, and has a vibrant cultural life.

Amsterdam has a more picturesque vibe due to its cobbled streets and winding canals that are prevalent across the city. It is more laid-back than Paris and boasts some unique, historic architecture in the form of its canal houses. It also has unique sights such as the Anne Frank House and world-class art museums such as the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.

amsterdam trip from india

Having visited both, Amsterdam suited my style more than Paris. Being interested in modern history, Amsterdam’s story fascinated me. Tulips are also my favorite flowers so going in April added an extra special memory for the trip.

Is Amsterdam The Most Beautiful City In Europe?

Deciding the most beautiful city in Europe is an impossible task! How do you decide which city is the most beautiful on a continent that has cities such as Paris, Rome, Vienna and so many more? By choosing one, I would risk the wrath of the residents of so many European cities who would rightfully claim that their city is the most beautiful.

What I can say is that Amsterdam is a stunning city . The canal houses and canals give Amsterdam a distinctive character. So intrinsically linked with the city in a similar way to Gaudí’s architectural association with Barcelona , Amsterdam has its own character and charm that make you want to explore every street and marvel at its beauty.

Having visited 15 of Europe’s capitals and many more of its cities, I can safely say that Amsterdam more than holds its own and has a good claim at being Europe’s most beautiful city.

What Is The Best Part Of Amsterdam To Stay In?

amsterdam trip from india

The best part of a city to stay in will always depend on the focus of your trip. Every traveler has their own preferences about where they want to stay. If you are heading to Amsterdam for its nightlife, you are inevitably going to want to be closer to the center and its Red-Light District, where a lot of the action happens.

However, my top recommendation is to stay in the Jordaan district of the city. I spent two of my three nights in a hotel here and it was stunning. The Jordaan is a historic neighborhood close to the city center. It was originally a working-class area but is now one of the trendiest neighborhoods in the city.

The Jordaan is famous for its art heritage with Rembrandt once living in the area. The neighborhood was also home to Anne Frank and her house is located within the district, making it a wonderful place to stay. The area also hosts weekly markets such as Noordermarkt and the Lindengrachtmarkt, both of which are great to explore.

amsterdam trip from india

One of my favorite memories from the trip was getting up early and wandering the beautiful streets of the Jordaan, taking photos, and exploring the beautiful streets without aim. This makes it my top pick for the best place to stay in Amsterdam.

Final Thoughts

Amsterdam is hands-down one of Europe’s greatest cities. The iconic capital of The Netherlands is the perfect choice for a 3-day break and will surprise you every step of the way. Whilst known for its nightlife, it is a stunningly beautiful city with a plethora of activities.

Whether you are into art, nature, food, history, or partying, Amsterdam has something for everyone. 3 days in Amsterdam will give you a great overview of the city but leave with the thirst to come back for more to keep peeling back the layers of this incredible place. I highly recommend a stay in the city and hope this guide has helped convince you to book those flights to Amsterdam!

Whether you’re flying straight into the city for a short trip, or you’re backpacking in Amsterdam , there are so many things to see and do!

While you can do a lot of walking around the different neighbourhoods, it may take you a while to get from one to another on foot. Most Mokummers (or Amsterdammers) travel by bike , and for this reason, public transport is not as reliable as one would hope.

That’s why it’s important to stay in the right area. Luckily, most of Amsterdam’s epic hostels are located in the ideal neighbourhood to explore the city. They might even offer free bikes that you can make use of!

You can travel by bus or tram through the city too. Buying a transport pass will save you some money. Alternatively, you can rent a bike for the duration of your stay, and look like a real local!

While getting from one stop to the next, really try not to rush things and rather enjoy the beautiful city with its parks, cute alleys and canals. We’ve planned each day to be entertaining but not overpacked, so there’s always time to stop at a little coffee shop or chill along one of the beautiful canals here and there.

Amsterdam is quite small but full of diverse and interesting neighbourhoods. The entire city is divided into 8 districts, each of which has its own neighbourhood divisions. Choosing a place to stay in Amsterdam is probably a question of what kind of visit you want.

For example, there are quite a lot of hostels right inside the red light district and in fact, some of the best hostels in Amsterdam are here. However, it can be loud and raucous and some find the surrounding temptations hard to resist.

Most visitors find the Old Centrum district the easiest and most convenient place to stay. You can reach anything and everything from here. It’s perfect whether you’re looking to shop, go on a canal cruise, or explore a museum or three. Old Centrum is also home to the infamous Red Light District, for those who are intrigued. There are also loads of the Best Airbnbs in Amsterdam in this location.

A slightly less touristy neighbourhood would be Oud Oost. This is the ideal place to find accommodation if you’d like to immerse yourself in the life of locals. While there aren’t as many tourist attractions to be found in the neighbourhood itself, you’ll be close enough to the Old Centrum district to enjoy the activities there.

With so many things to do in Amsterdam , you should be sure to stay somewhere where you can get to all the sights easily and quickly.

The Jordaan district is a culturally-rich area of the city is possibly the best place to start your Amsterdam travel adventure.

There are plenty of markets to be found in the neighbourhood, as well as some charming old churches.

It’s also one of the best food spots in Amsterdam! If you need your coffee fix in the morning and tasty breakfast, you’ll find loads of cute little cafes in Jordaan District. We’d recommend stopping at Paradox Coffee Shop, one of the best-reviewed cafes in the area. Make sure to eat enough so you’re full for the next couple of hours of explorations.

9:00 AM – See the Anne Frank House

See the Anne Frank House

If you haven’t yet heard of Anne Frank or her diary, you should definitely do some quick research before your Amsterdam trip. She was a young teen when her family had to go into hiding from the invading Nazis.

Long story short, Anne wrote a diary detailing her family’s time living in this confined attic space. The Anne Frank House is the very place where they hid away and lived for almost 4 years before being captured and tragically dying at a concentration camp!

The house is one of the more popular tourist spots, and it’s definitely a place that everyone should see at least once! However, it’s known to get quite busy and crowded.

Inside the museum, you’ll be told the story of Anne Frank and Amsterdam under Nazi Occupation. The way their lives were during those times, and what exactly happened in that attic. It can be quite an emotional activity, and it is definitely an educational trip, but it’s also a must-see attraction on your 3-days in Amsterdam itinerary.

Take a self-guided audio tour so you really get to grips with what happened here.

  • Cost  – $5-12 USD
  • How long should I stay here?   1-2 hours max
  • Getting there –  It’s in walking distance from Stop 1

11:30 AM – Climb the Westertoren Tower

Westertoren Tower

After a slightly sobering visit to the Anne Frank House, cheer yourself up a bit with some exercise and extraordinary views of Amsterdam! The tower is incredibly close to the Anne Frank House, in fact, Anne wrote about watching the tower out of the Annex’s window.

The Westertoren (or Westerkerk) Tower provides an incredible viewpoint from its platform, located about halfway up the tower. The only way to reach the platform is by climbing a winding spiral staircase, and then a set of ladder-like steps!

As such, it’s quite an active experience so you should be reasonably fit and mobile. Children younger than 6 are not allowed to do the tour.

You can’t go up yourself, so you’ll need to book a guided tour. These run every 30 minutes and are in groups of about 6 – 10 people. The guides are local university students, that speak impeccable English, and know their city well!

  • Cost  – $9
  • How long should I stay here?   30 Mins
  • Getting there –  It’s in walking distance

12:30 PM – Enjoy the Views at A’Dam Lookout & Swing Over the Edge!

ADam Lookout

We’re not done seeing this city from the sky yet! With so much going on, sometimes higher up is the best place to be. You can pretty much see all of Amsterdam from this panoramic-view deck. If this is the only thing you manage to do while visiting the city, it would be worth it!

The A’Dam offers more than just some quiet reflecting over the city, though. The main attraction here is the Over The Edge swing! This recently opened attraction is the newest and possibly most exciting way to get a bird’s-eye view of this wondrous Dutch city.

The Over The Edge swing is Europe’s highest swing! It sits on A’Dam Lookout’s deck at 20 storeys high! Not only will you be able to enjoy 360-degree views of the city, but you’ll get your heart pumping and adrenaline flowing with this (literal) over the edge swing!

  • Cost  – $5-15 USD
  • How long should I stay here?  30min – 1 hour
  • Getting there –  Take your Bike!

3:00 PM – Stop Off at Brouwerij ‘t IJ

Brouwerij 't IJ

Let your feet touch the ground and guide you straight to Brouwerij ‘t IJ. You can take a 20-minute cycle from the A’Dam Lookout, alternatively, hop on public transport or order an Uber. It’s just under 5km distance, so if you’re feeling fit you can walk it too!

However you decide to arrive, you will be rewarded when you get there! Brouwerij ‘t IJ is a small brewery on the IJ (pronounced ‘eye’) River. It produces certified organic beer and sits at the foot of a stunning windmill. Making it the perfect spot for an afternoon stop.

You can book a guided group tour (private tours are also available, but costly!) and see the ins and outs of a working brewery. Then, settle down to a beer tasting and/or pairing experience! The bar is open for those who wish to chill a little longer and enjoy full-size beers.

Once you’re done, make sure to cross the road and try some of the best ice creams in Amsterdam at De Ijsmolen (The Ice Cream Shop). It’ll make your stomach happy, cool you down after all those beer tastings and maybe even sober you up a bit.

  • Cost  – $7.30 USD
  • How long should I stay here?  1-2 hours
  • Getting there –  Bike/Uber/Public Transport

4:30 PM – Get the Full Heineken Experience

Heineken Experience

While our morning was all about viewpoints, our afternoon is pretty much all about beer! Something Amsterdammers actually know quite a bit about.

Set in Heineken’s first-ever brewery, The Heineken Experience is a top attraction in Amsterdam. Run by local Amsterdammers, the tour offered will not only give you insights into Heineken’s past, and how they became the much-loved beer that they are now but will also let you see how it is made.

While the actual brewery was closed down years ago, due to it being too small for demand, it has been transformed into an epic beer experience. You can take a group guided tour, or set off on your own self-guided tour of the brewery. After the tour everyone sits down for a Heineken or two and a few laughs!

Once you’ve had enough of beer, head to dinner at one of the fabulous restaurants in Amsterdam and recharge so you’re ready for the last stop of the day. Just keep your hands off garlic if possible. You’ll see why…

Be sure to snap up tickets before you go and take a guided tour around the facilities.

  • Cost  – $26.40 + 2 free beer
  • Getting there –  Take the Ferry!

8:00 PM – Discover the Red Light District

Discover the Red Light District

The Red Light District may have a controversial reputation, but it is definitely an interesting place to experience.

Also known as De Wallen, this neighbourhood is internationally known for its openly tolerated brothels, sex shops, and even its lenient drug laws. This is one neighbourhood where the darker (or more fun) side of humanity is allowed to roam free.

The Dutch have allowed this district to keep running, with soft laws, and it works! It’s also a fantastic tourist spot, because where else can you be sure to see a museum of prostitution or a sex peep show?!

Whether you visit for the more hardcore places, or simply to see what all the fuss is about, visiting the Red Light District is a must on your 3-day Amsterdam itinerary if you’re looking to fully experience the city!

If you want to check out this area but you’re a little unsure or you want to learn a bit more about the history of the Red Light District, why not take a guided walking tour instead.

  • Cost  – Free unless you go into Clubs… expensive if you do!!
  • How long should I stay here?  Up to you…
  • Getting there –  Take public transport in case you want to have a drink.

Amsterdam Itinerary Day 2

Day two is going to start nice and slow. After a tasty coffee, we’re going to fresh up your art knowledge by checking out some of the most famous museums in Amsterdam. Afterwards, you’ll experience what Amsterdam is mainly known for among young travellers: coffee shops and weed!

9:00 AM – Check Out the Rijksmuseum

Check Out the Rijksmuseum

This fantastic museum is home to many famous artists’ paintings and artwork. It also has an impressive research library, as well as other exhibitions and displays.

The exhibitions constantly change, so be sure to check out online what’s being showcased during your visit.

You can organise a private or group guided tour, or simply browse through the galleries at your own leisure once you’ve got your tickets .

If you’re an art lover, you might already know about this museum as it showcases classic paintings like Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch”.

If you haven’t had breakfast yet, the Rijksmuseum cafe (also called Groot Cafe) has some of the best and most delicious breakfasts in the area.

  • Cost  – $22.50 USD
  • How long should I stay here?  2 hour
  • Getting there –  Walk from Rijksmuseum.

11:30 AM – Visit the Van Gogh Museum

Visit the Van Gogh Museum

Thanks to the famous Van Gogh’s Dutch heritage, this museum is one of Amsterdam’s most well-known. It is also home to one of the largest collections of his works!

See the well-known painter’s drawings, letters, and (of course) some of his most famed paintings. There are also displays that change often and show other pieces that influenced Van Gogh’s works.

Thanks to this museum being so popular, it can get really busy! So, expect a few crowds and embrace the experience. The time of day doesn’t really make much of a difference to how busy it gets. However, doing this visit before lunchtime will probably mean slightly fewer crowds.

To visit the Van Gogh museum, you must buy your tickets online beforehand . The website shows time slots and days that are available. You won’t be able to buy tickets when you get there, so go prepared!

If you fancy yourself a painter, you can join one of the walk-in workshops while you’re there and try your hand at painting a masterpiece!

Insider Tip:  If it’s raining – especially during the weekend – the museum is bound to be extra busy, so avoid visiting over this time, or come prepared to deal with the crowds!

  • Cost  – Around $22 USD
  • How long should I stay here?  2 hours
  • Getting there –  In walking distance from Spot 2.

2:00 PM – Discover the Hash, Marijuana & Hemp Museum

Hash, Marijuana & Hemp Museum

Cannabis enthusiasts will fall in love with this museum, which is dedicated to all things Cannabis Sativa L. There is an Amsterdam branch as well as a branch in Barcelona too. The building in Amsterdam, however, is the oldest Cannabis museum in the world, also thought to be the most important!

The museum has various displays showing the history and use of hemp, hash, and Marijuana. From early Japanese hemp clothing to Christopher Columbus’ connection with Cannabis, you can learn more about the different uses of hemp and hash throughout the years. All very educational!

Visit both of the two venues that make up the museum – a hash and marijuana venue with a Cannabis garden, and an industrial hemp museum. Together, these venues hold over 12 000 objects relating to Cannabis.

  • Cost  – $10 USD
  • How long should I stay here?  1 hour
  • Getting there –  Take your bike or public transport.

3:00 PM – Experience an Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop

Experience an Amsterdam Cannabis Coffeeshop

There are many designated coffee shops in Amsterdam where you can go to buy and smoke weed. While this is somewhat of a controversial topic in places, it’s also one of the biggest tourist attractions to the city!

It’s important to note that coffee shops are different from koffiehuises and cafes. A coffee shop is the only place you’re going to find Mary-Jane on the menu. In many of the shops, you can bring your own and smoke – but it’s only legal to buy from the coffeeshops so the smartest thing to do is buy off their menu.

To find a licensed seller, look for the green and white sticker on their window. You won’t find joints on sale in an ordinary cafe or koffiehuis.

The strains and potency of the weed are not regulated in Amsterdam, so be careful when smoking – try out small amounts at a time. It’s also a great idea to share with a group! Cannabis can be a great way to make friends.

If you’re a little unsure about the ins and outs of visiting a coffee shop, why not take a guided walking tour , which includes an optional joint, it’s a great way to get some more information whilst making you feel totally comfortable.

  • Cost  – Can vary between $7-$13 USD per gram
  • How long should I stay here?  Up to you!
  • Getting there –  You can easily find a shop in walking distance.

4:00 PM – Enjoy a Relaxing Canal Cruise

Enjoy a Relaxing Canal Cruise

Something that everyone should do at least once in Amsterdam, is a canal cruise! Leaving this activity for last means that you’ll enjoy the sun setting over the city. This makes for some idyllic views.

The evening cruise lasts approximately 90 minutes, and an audio guide is provided in your preferred language (they have 21 options). You’ll hear the history of Amsterdam, how it came to be the magnificent city it is today, and how it continues to thrive.

This is the perfect end to a busy day, and after the cruise, you can easily make your way to one of the nearby restaurants to enjoy a lovely meal.

If you’re here during the busy season you might want to pre-book your cruise to be sure you get it at the right time for sunset or dinner.

Insider Tip:  This is actually quite an activity to do right after visiting one of the coffee shops! (If you know what we mean!)

  • Cost  – $25 USD
  • How long should I stay here?  1.5-2 hours
  • Getting there –  If you’re close to the canal, the next station will be in walking distance.

6:00 PM – Explore Leidseplein

Explore Leidseplein

Get ready to party with the locals at Leidseplein! This square comes alive at night, offering up a host of nightclubs, bars, and other fun-loving spots. There are 100s of restaurants in and surrounding the square, and some great international food to be found!

For those who are into betting, there’s a casino in the area as well. Arguably, though, the biggest highlight of the area is the assortment of live music found at various establishments.

It’s also not too far away from the Central district, and public transport runs through to the other districts as well, so you won’t have any hassle getting back to your hotel! This is the best way to end your Amsterdam visit if you only have 2 days in Amsterdam.

  • Cost  – Depends on your consume.
  • How long should I stay here?  2-3 hours
  • Getting there –  Take Public Transport/Uber so yo can have a few drinks!

Amsterdam Day 3 Map

If you’ve booked 3 days in Amsterdam (or perhaps even more!) then you’ve got the perfect opportunity to view some of the lesser-known Amsterdam attractions. While the city caters well for the throngs of tourists it receives each year, there are many more things that you should take a look at.

9:00 AM – Take a Ferry to Amsterdam North

Take a Ferry to Amsterdam North

Don’t be one of ‘those’ tourists! You know, the ones that never leave the central district. It can be tempting – since most of the sights are right there! Trust us, though, you should see the Northern districts if you’re staying for longer than a day or two.

The ferries to the Noord are an experience unlike most. Firstly, the majority of them are completely free! They allow bicycles and mopeds to be taken on as well, so you have your transport ready for exploring on the other side.

There is no booking, no tickets, and no fuss! Amsterdam’s northern districts are full of delightful spots for a small bite to eat and a refreshing drink. Or you can take a short trip up to the nearby nature reserve, where you can take in gorgeous views of the landscape, and the windmill!

While you’re there, you should really check out the pancake boat. This is a small cruise boat that takes you down the IJ River while serving you an all-you-can-eat pancake buffet!

  • Cost  – Free!
  • Getting there –  Use maps to find the closest station!

11:30 AM – Enjoy a Tour of the House of Bols

Enjoy a Tour of the House of Bols

The Bols family were celebrated Dutch spirit-makers and alcohol sellers who left quite a legacy. Located centrally to all the exciting happenings in Amsterdam, you’ll find the House of Bols. This Genever house is both an academy and a museum of sorts.

You can book a self-guided tour through the distillery, which will give you a detailed history of Lucas Bols himself. See how the Bols legacy began, and how it has evolved through the years.

Take a tour through the different rooms in the ‘house’. You’ll make your way through an entire cocktail experience that will ignite your senses. From sight, smell and, of course, taste.

Then you’ll make your way to the ingredient room, which will help you discover the ingredients that go into creating an authentic genever. Afterwards, pay a visit to the Genever Room, and learn more about the history of Genever itself.

Then, finally, it’s time for one of the skilled bartenders to create your choice of cocktails. Enjoy it slowly with your group in the mirror bar. Once you’ve finished your drink, you’ll get a crash course in bartending, and will have the chance to make your very own cocktail!

  • Cost  – $18
  • Getting there –  Take a bike and enjoy the city views.

1:30 PM – Stroll through a Park or Two

Stroll through a Park or Two

Amsterdam is home to more than 30 parks and gardens – each one as majestic as the next! These green oases are perfect for a break from city life. You’ll find parks both big and small, as well as many extraordinary Botanical Gardens.

If you’ve already managed to view and visit the big tourist attractions throughout the city, your next move should definitely be a picnic in the park.

During fair weather months, you may even catch some live music, or a festival bringing one of the parks to life! These are sure to get you in the spirit and are a great way to meet other travellers and locals.

Many of the parks are also fantastic places to hop on board a gondola and enjoy one (or more!) of the famous canal cruises that we keep talking about!

  • Getting there –  Walk or take your bike!

3:30 PM – Check Out Dam Square

Check Out Dam Square

The city square, known as The Dam, is home to many famed Amsterdam attractions. Places such as the Royal Palace, New Church and Madame Tussauds are all around the square. You can easily walk from one attraction to the next, and manage to see them all in a day!

The square is also close to the Red Light District and offers many cannabis coffeeshops along its streets. Visit one of these and experience the smokier side of Amsterdam. The Red Light District offers up its own itinerary of interesting fun.

You can also go for a canal cruise from nearby, making this the best spot to start a day of exploring! Since there are so many things to do and see, it’s best if you dedicate a large portion of your day to The Dam.

If you’re in town during one of the festivals or special days, you’ll see the square light up with excitement and transform into what seems like another world! The best and most popular festival is probably King’s Day, which is celebrated every April.

  • Getting there –  Public Transport/Bike is the most efficient way.

Need a place quick? Here’s the best neighborhood in Amsterdam

Westerpark in Netherland

Westerpark is close enough to the city centre to make exploring a breeze, yet just far enough away to offer a more chilled out stay making it the best place to stay in Amsterdam for first-time visitors.

  • Admire the artistic works at Museum Het Schip.
  • Relax at Het Stenen Hoofd, an urban beach that’s popular with locals.
  • Sample local beers at De Prael brewery and Troost.

Did you fall in love with the city? Don’t worry, we don’t blame you! We’ve listed up a couple of other awesome places that you might want to check out if you’ve got more than 3 days in Amsterdam.

Visit Ouderkerk Aan de Amstel

Visit Ouderkerk aan de Amstel

This quaint little village sits just outside Amsterdam. You can reach the village easily by bike, bus, or boat! Or, if you prefer, you can take a drive out; either with a rental car or by ordering an Uber.

There are many groups that cycle together from Amsterdam to Ouderkerk Aan de Amstel, but the boat ride up the Amstel River is just as scenic! You could also opt for an early morning cycle, and then go back to the city in an open boat – weather permitting!

There is quite a surprising number of things to do in the village! From checking out the beautiful windmill at the bottom of the village to trying out some traditional Dutch cuisine in one of the many restaurants dotted along the river bank.

Mostly, strolling through the cobbled streets and greeting the friendly locals is an experience on its own! The village offers a delightful break away from human chattering and car motors and lets you sit in wonder while listening to the birds sing.

  • Getting there –  Preferably by boat, but Uber works too.

Is the food in Amsterdam safe?

If you love food, and who doesn’t, then this is the best place in Amsterdam. In this neighbourhood, you’ll find everything you’ve ever wanted to eat from dim sum to pizza and doughnuts. This area was once an old tram depot, so it has plenty of history behind it. But it’s now filled with food stores that offer some of the best snacks in the city.

Take your appetite and go from stall to stall in this area. Try everything that peaks your fancy and take your food to one of the outside benches and watch the crowds while you eat. When you’re full, there are several shops and boutiques selling clothes, ornaments and other goods that you can browse in.

And as is the norm with Amsterdam, the shops are all quirky and unique, so make sure you enjoy the atmosphere while you’re there.

  • Cost  – Free to visit
  • Getting there –  Easy to reach by Public Transport

when to visit Amsterdam

While it is impossible to say that there is a ‘worst’ time to visit Amsterdam, many have differing opinions on the ‘best’ time to go.

Of course, it depends solely on the type of activities that you enjoy most. Each of the four seasons fully transforms and takes over Amsterdam’s landscapes, and each brings with it a new list of things to do.

Visiting Amsterdam during the winter will mean lots of rain and dreary days. This is also the low tourist season in Amsterdam, which means there will be fewer tourists and cheaper prices. You also might get lucky and see some snow!

The best time to visit Amsterdam is during the spring and autumn i.e. the shoulder months. The weather will be fair, the tourists haven’t arrived in force yet, and prices will be reasonable.

Summer is when the streets of Amsterdam are jam-packed. As such, prices will be higher but Amsterdam is really fun during this time and it’s the best time for taking day trips in Amsterdam due to the longer and warmer days.

While you’re there, why not check out other places in the Netherlands? The country might be small, but there is an incredible amount to explore.

Packing for Amsterdam is like packing for any other European country . Depending on the season, you’ll need shorts & t-shirts or warm things to cover up. Amsterdam can get quite cold during the winter months, so be sure to pack a warm pair of boots and a good jacket. Apart from that, dressing casual and packing the essentials is plenty enough for your Amsterdam trip. When you’re in Northern Europe it’s always best to pack a waterproof jacket too!

OK,  Amsterdam is a relatively safe city.   However, its popularity with tourists – and permissiveness for drugs and sex – can sometimes cause slight chaos. It is arguably the most dangerous city in the Netherlands … which actually isn’t saying much!!

Don’t be alarmed though! The peril is not quite as bad as it may seem. Most of the crime and chaotic disturbances happen in the Red Light District. While many tourists arrive in the city with the decided purpose to visit this notorious district, it’s not advised that you stroll the streets alone at night. Petty theft in this area is pretty common and inebriated tourists are often the victims.

cost of a trip to Amsterdam

Staying safe everywhere else in Amsterdam is quite easy, actually. Stay vigilant when walking down quiet streets alone. Keep your valuables close to you. Don’t buy any illegal drugs – this is the quickest way to screw up your visit.

Also, don’t fall for scammers. As with any tourist destination, you’re going to find people looking for a quick buck. Stick to your guns and don’t let sob stories or crafty tales cause you to lose valuable exploring money.

And last, but definitely not least, don’t smoke weed anywhere but in a coffee shop. It’s not legal everywhere, and you wouldn’t want to get yourself into trouble in a foreign city.

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Amsterdam

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

20 things to know before visiting Amsterdam in 2024

Mar 16, 2024 • 7 min read

From cannabis-clouded coffee shops  to lovely parks and cycling lanes aplenty, Amsterdam is a European city with a delightful, vibrant vibe that’s entirely its own. While it certainly makes for amazing travel escapades, there are some useful things to understand about this city and the local culture.

So, what do you need to know before visiting Amsterdam for the first time? Here are our top tips for newcomers.

1. Amsterdam is not a 24/7 city

Amsterdam establishments keep very regular hours. Opening hours in shops are generally from about 10am to 6pm, and 8pm for supermarkets. Many shops and grocers do not open on Sundays (with the exception of busy tourist areas like Nieuwendijk and Kalverstraat ). Coffeeshops tend to open in the morning and close around midnight, while bars and clubs go much later until 3 or 4am.

2. Pre-purchase tickets where possible

At museums and galleries , it’s best to plan for long queues – especially during the high season from June to August . Ticketed time slots (most can be downloaded to your phone) are available at popular sights like the Anne Frank Huis and Van Gogh Museum and should be booked at least six weeks in advance.

3. Book accommodation and restaurants in advance

Similarly, lodging should be secured at least four months before your trip, especially if you’re visiting during the summer or on the weekend. Seats at your must-visit restaurants are best squared away at least two weeks in advance.

4. Budget for a (higher) tourist tax

In 2024, Amsterdam's tourist tax – which is added to the cost of accommodation per night – has risen from 7% to 12.5%, making it now the most expensive in Europe. The tax is charged at a percentage of your accommodation cost, and is payable on arrival. For example, a four-person room booking for three nights by Vondelpark is costing a group of friends €818.88 between them, with an additional €91.88 to be paid on arrival. Plan ahead and factor the tax into your budget, as it's easy to forget about it once you've booked transport and accommodation ahead of it.

5. Lock your bike… twice

Cycling is one of the most popular ways to get around Amsterdam . Most rental bikes come with two locks – it’s best to use them both! Bike thieves in Amsterdam can be very capable. Use one lock for the front wheel (attached to the bike frame) and the other for the back, preferably attached to a post, bike rack or some other structure mounted to the ground.

Also, pay attention to signage regarding bike parking. Bicycle racks near tram and train stations and in certain public squares are usually best, or you may risk it being removed by the police.

6. Pack layers of clothing

Practical clothing will get you far in Amsterdam. It’s a city where people dress hip but casual (jeans and nice sneakers or boots, for example) and mix-and-match layers since the year-round weather is unpredictable. A light trench coat or windbreaker jacket is essential for all seasons besides winter, when a proper coat and warm gear are needed.

7. Buy an OV-chipkaart for travel around the city

The OV-chipkaart is highly recommended for public transport since it’s more convenient than single tickets and is easily reloadable at machines or online. It's available for purchase from ticketing machines and supermarkets. Note: you need to touch on and touch off, including when you're getting off trams. Otherwise, you'll pay a hefty fee.

8. Carry a mix of cash and cards

In Amsterdam, there is a growing movement of cafes and restaurants going cashless – while some of the more traditional, older haunts like bruin cafés (brown cafes) may not take cards at all. It's best to carry a mix of cash and cards.

Amsterdam Gay Pride Parade in the canals

9. Be respectful on the streets

Dutch locals are tired of Amsterdam’s reputation as a destination for bachelor parties and bad behavior, therefore authorities have taken steps to curtail the effects of rowdy visitors. To avoid disapproving looks and humiliating conversations, acting sensibly on downtown streets is a must.

Smoking marijuana and drinking in public is illegal and considered poor etiquette by Amsterdam natives. Similarly, taking photos of sex workers in the Red Light District is strictly prohibited.

10. Haggling at flea markets is okay

When shopping at Amsterdam’s famous rommelmarkt (flea markets) like IJ Hallen , the first price given by the seller is usually not a firm price but a starting point. This rule applies to secondhand items not artisan-made goods. Use your judgment and always be respectful.

11. Mind the Dutch mentality

The Dutch are known for being extremely direct. If a local shares a blunt, unvarnished opinion with you, it comes from a place of honesty rather than rudeness. In Dutch culture, it’s gracious to speak your mind and keep it short – don’t be surprised to find "no" is a complete sentence!

Despite the brutally honest Dutch mentality, there are certain talking points that are considered too close to comfort and should be avoided – for example, asking very personal questions about income.

12. Do I need to tip?

Tipping is not expected in Amsterdam where hospitality workers receive a fair wage for their professions, and are not dependent on the tip jar contributions as might be the case elsewhere. Of course a tip (around 10% is normal) for excellent service is not going to be considered odd. Feel free to tip in bars, cafes, restaurants and accommodation if the service warrants it. If you take a free walking tour, presenting your guide with a decent tip at the end is normal.

13. Make friends by wearing orange

At sporting events in recent years, the Dutch are known for the oranjekoorts (orange fever) or oranjegekte (orange craze).

If you want the Dutch to know you’re cheering for them, wear the royal family’s traditional color. The more outlandish and over-the-top – we’re talking wigs, feather boas and face paint – the better.

Tulip flowers for sale at a Dutch flower market.

14. Can I transport tulip bulbs home?

Tulip bulbs purchased at Amsterdam’s Bloemenmarkt can be shipped back to countries such as the United States, but an official certificate is needed for customs. Look for the sticker that says, “To the Plant Protection Service of the United States and Canada.” The additional certificate must be dated within six weeks of travel (otherwise, it’s best to have the seller ship them).

15. Can I bring cheese back home from the Netherlands?

Most varieties of Dutch cheeses will make it through customs, although typically unpasteurized and raw cheeses may not. Cheese should also be vacuum-bagged (for the sake of your fellow travelers as well as for healthy and safety).

16. Mind the cyclists – and the cycling lanes

Cyclists in Amsterdam mean serious business. Never walk in a cycling lane, or you'll risk the wrath of an angry local on wheels. Always take a good look both ways before crossing – bicycles are silent, but an accident can be very serious for cyclists and pedestrians.

17. Don’t rent a car – rent a bike instead

Driving in Amsterdam is notoriously difficult, especially in the city center. Narrow cobblestone alleys and canals make maneuvering tough, plus parking is scarce and pricey (and it's usually not available, even at hotels).

Helmets are not legally mandated but strongly recommended. Most bike shops rent them for as little as €2.50 a day.

Streets and Canals of Amsterdam full of people dressed in orange celebrating King's day on April 27, 2015 in Amsterdam,

18. Be careful around canals

Almost none have barriers, and yes, tourist drownings have happened.

19. Watch out for pickpockets

Amsterdam’s compact downtown (chock-full of foot traffic and often folks who are under the influence) is the perfect recipe for thieves – especially in busy squares and typical visitor areas. Stay aware, and don't keep all your documents and valuables on you.

20. What to do if you need medical care in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam has an abundance of English-speaking doctors and medical care services targeted towards travelers, such as Hoteldoc and Amsterdam Tourist Doctors . For urgent medical care, dial 112 for emergencies or +31 20 570 9500 directly for an ambulance.
