The Fretboard Journal Guitar Podcast
- Music, hobby,
Jack Tarlinton's story is unlike any you've heard before. The Australian tinkerer and music lover started out in publishing (he co-founded the Skateboarder's Journal, a magazine not unlike our own, but for skateboarding); found himself doing carpentry and eventually worked in the prop department of a big budget Hollywood movie. He then caught the lutherie bug, thanks in part to the Fretboard Journal. Over the last few years, Tarlinton has honed his craft as Wandering Boy Guitars, where he builds ladded-braced instruments inspired by the old Stella / Oscar Schmidt guitars of the '20s and '30s. His instruments look like time capsules, available in six, nine, and twelve-string versions, just like the originals. He then ages them using time-period correct relics like belt buckles and handcuffs, employing techniques he learned on the set of Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant.
Like we said, you definitely haven't heard a story like this before... we hope you love it. wanderingboyguitars.com

As we creep up on our 50th issue of the Journal , we continue to push the boundaries of guitar media. Found in Fretboard Journal 49: We invite Martin Guitars legend Dick Boak to interview (and illustrate!) his close friend, John Sebastian , of the Lovin' Spoonful fame. The resulting interview covers everything from Woodstock to the modern lutherie movement.
Also inside: Tristan Scroggins talks bluegrass with John Reischman and traces how "Salt Spring," a composition Reischman wrote in the wilds of Canada on a borrowed Martin 00-18, became a bluegrass standard. We also follow the unlikely evolution of Al Valenti 's D'Angelico guitar, an archtop that underwent quite a transformation, from steel-string to nylon. Liam Cochran interviews Wandering Boy Guitars ' Jack Tarlinton, an Aussie determined to the capture the magic of those 1920s and 1930s budget acoustic blues boxes... today. And Jason Verlinde sits down with one of his favorite young artists, Tré Burt , one of the most powerful singer-songwriters he's heard in years.
This issue also has no shortage of guitar virtuoso interviews, including Dr. Molly Miller , Jimmy Vivino and Paul Pigat (who is also now knee-deep in building his own guitar creations). Brian K. Saunders interviews Mike Baggetta and Mike Watt about their ongoing collaboration and Aaron Gilbreath pens a loving tribute to the many sides of "Walk, Don't Run." And more! Our reader-supported format means over 100 pages of ad-free editorial in every issue.

Circa 1930 Stella 12-String
- 12-String Guitar
- Catch of the Day
When this Stella 12-string was made sometime around 1930, it was a well-designed, well-built guitar that sold at a modest price. This type of 12-string was popular with blues musicians like Barbecue Bob, Blind Willie McTell and Lead Belly, who liked the extra volume the extra strings added. This particular model is quite fancy and was close to the top-of-the-line from Stella. In its day, this guitar would have have probably been tuned down to D and strung with heavy strings, which led to our current dilemma.
![wandering boy guitars price Stella 12-String](https://www.fretboardjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/stella_full.jpg)
Over time, the heavy string tension has caused the neck to pull forward and the top to sink. In the past, a repair person would have looked at the collapsing guitar and said that the cost of repair would have exceeded the guitar’s value, so it was basically a goner.
![wandering boy guitars price Stella 12-String](https://www.fretboardjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/stella_neck.jpg)
But in the last few years, old Stella 12-strings have become quite valuable, so now it’s worth spending the money, time and effort to restore an instrument like this. But even though this Stella is worth restoring, it has a few issues that make restoration a difficult proposition. We don’t know where this guitar was stored for the last decade or three, but judging from the precarious condition of the finish, it wasn’t kept in a climate controlled, properly humidified space. The finish is very badly checked, and in many places is flaking off. Normally, we’d say that’s too bad, shake our heads and just refinish the guitar.
![wandering boy guitars price Stella 12-String](https://www.fretboardjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/stella_back.jpg)
But this one has that wonderful decal on the top that would be lost. The existing finish is in such bad shape that it may not be salvageable, but refinishing would destroy much of the guitar’s essential coolness.
![wandering boy guitars price Stella 12-String](https://www.fretboardjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/stella_front.jpg)
To add to the messiness, the fretboard is made of a fancy, but now crumbling plastic. It could certainly be replaced, but again much of the guitar’s mojo would be lost. The structural issues are fixable, but the guitar would have to be disassembled to fix them. But the process of physical restoration would ruin the guitar’s cosmetic appeal, which is considerable. So what would you do?

Arsenal make approach to sign Everton star with asking price set

Arsenal have made an approach to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, according to reports.
Mikel Arteta is looking to sign a new central midfielder this summer following the departure of Mohamed Elneny, while Thomas Partey continues to be linked with a move away from the Gunners.
Onana, meanwhile, has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.
However, the Liverpool Echo reports that Arsenal are the first team to make a move this month as they have made an enquiry to Everton about Onana’s availability.
The report claims that Everton, who are under pressure to meet the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules after being punished for two separate breaches this season , would be open to a deal for £50 million.
Onana is currently with Belgium’s squad as they prepare for their Euro 2024 group-stage opener against Slovakia on Monday.
![wandering boy guitars price Belgium's Amadou Onana pictured during a training session of Belgian national soccer team](https://metro.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/GettyImages-2156734430-97b8.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&zoom=1&resize=540%2C360)
Arsenal’s approach for Onana comes in the same week as Manchester United’s failed opening bid for Jarrad Branthwaite.
It’s understood that United’s first offer of £45m has been rejected by Everton, who are demanding at least a £70m fee for the 21-year-old .
Everton have also reportedly reached an agreement in principle with the Friedkin Group for a takeover of the club.
American businessman Dan Friedkin, who has an estimated net worth of £4.81 billion, purchased Serie A side Roma in 2020 for £552m.
Friedkin has been in talks with Everton’s current owner, Farhad Moshiri, and is considered the preferred bidder.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
![Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum](https://rusmania.com/sites/default/files/styles/sight_cover/public/monastery-1-6.jpg?itok=jTe81t5t)
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
![wandering boy guitars price](https://rusmania.com/perch/resources/monastery-3-1.jpg)
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
![wandering boy guitars price](https://rusmania.com/perch/resources/monastery-2-3.jpg)
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
![wandering boy guitars price](https://rusmania.com/perch/resources/monastery-13.jpg)
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
![wandering boy guitars price](https://rusmania.com/perch/resources/monastery-7-3.jpg)
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
![wandering boy guitars price](https://rusmania.com/perch/resources/monastery-12-1.jpg)
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
![wandering boy guitars price](https://rusmania.com/perch/resources/monastery-32.jpg)
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
![wandering boy guitars price](https://rusmania.com/perch/resources/monastery-14-2.jpg)
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
