All About Bali’s Awe-Inspiring Volcanos

Bali has the best of everything; the best beach clubs, restaurants, beaches, you name it, but what really stands out about visiting Bali and Indonesia are the volcanos . Unique to a trip to Indonesia, the volcanos on Bali and the outer islands host some of the best views and hiking opportunities in all of SE Asia – You can’t plan a trip to Bali without visiting at least one volcano, here’s a short list of all the best volcanos in Indonesia.

👉 Tip! Bali is famous for having awe-inspiring volcanos, but did you know that some of the Best Bali Volcano Tours aren’t on Bali at all, but rather on Indonesia’s outer islands? This list includes volcanoes on Bali & on the nearby islands + How to travel to them.

volcano tour in bali

1. Mt. Batur Sunrise Trek  – Bali

Mt. Batur is by far the most famous volcano in all of Bali and Indonesia. Hundreds, if not thousands, of tourists flock to Kintamani to hike Mt. Batur’s scenic slope for sunrise every day of the year. The reasons Mt. Batur is the most popular volcano in all of Bali and Indonesia are two-fold:

1) It’s an extremely photogenic sunrise spot, most Bali travel experts consider Mt. Batur’s Caldera to be the most beautiful sunrise in all of Bali!

2) Mt. Batur is conveniently located in Central Bali. Officially located in Kintamani, which is only an hour East of Ubud, Mt. Batur is the easiest volcano to get to.

volcano tour in bali

Combo Tours: It’s only a 1-2 hour hike up to Mt. Batur’s peak for its famous sunrise spot, and once you’re in the Kintamani area there are a ton of amazing other activities you can do. Most Mt Batur Tours also offer add-on services, since the sunrise tour ends around 9 AM, there’s lots of time in the day for more activities. The most popular combo tours for Mt. Batur are White Water Rafting , and taking an Ubud day tour that includes a high-swing over the rice terraces. After climbing Mt. Batur for sunrise, you can also take an ATV or Motorbike tour of the Kintamani Lava Fields.

🚩 Need to Know: There’s a “Volcano Association” ( Tourist Mafia ) that makes everyone use a guide to hike Mt. Batur, and most of the volcanoes in Indonesia.

A traveler enjoys a cup of coffee while sitting on the hood of a jeep as the sun rises over Mt. Batur volcano in the distance. Taking a jeep up the caldera of Mt. Batur is one of the most popular Bali volcano tours.

2. Mt. Batur Via Jeep (For Those Who Don’t Want to Hike!) – Bali

If you don’t want to do the 1-2 hour trek up to Mt. Batur’s Caldera, you also have the option to take a private jeep tour up. The Mt. Batur Jeep Tours are also considered a bit more luxurious and romantic than the trekking ones. Mt. Batur Jeep Tours also usually include a sunrise breakfast served on the roof of the jeep, and an offroading tour of the Kintamani Lava Fields.

👉 Budget Tip: There are also motorbike taxis available to summit Mt. Batur, but you still need to hike around 15 minutes uphill from the motorbike parking station, which makes the Jeep tour a much nicer alternative for those who do not want to trek.

A hiker poses at the peak for sunrise at Mt. Agung volcano in Bali. Trekking to the peak of Mt. Agung for sunrise is one of the most popular Bali volcano tours.

3. Mt. Agung for Sunrise : The Hardest Volcano Hike in Bali

Considered the most challenging hike on the island of Bali, Mt. Agung is perfect for those who want to get a good trek on their holiday.  Both Agung and Batur volcanos in Bali are famous for their sunrises -Your reward for choosing Mt. Agung, the more challenging of the two volcanos, to hike for sunrise is that far fewer tourists will be there. Mt. Agung is located in the far North East region of Bali and is the highest peak on the island at 3,142 meters above sea level.

🥾 How Long is the Hike: The “short route” for Mt. Agung is a 3-4-hour hike up, and the long route is 5-7 hours.

🛕 Tip: Tours to Mt. Agung also usually include Besakih Temple, the largest Balinese Hindu Temple in the world.

3. Kawah Ijen Acid Volcano : Overnight Tour to East Java

Climbing Kawah Ijen  was the highlight of my first trip to Indonesia all the way back in 2019 – To this day, I still haven’t come across anything quite like it!  Kawah Ijen is the most unique and adventurous volcano in all of Indonesia – Kawah Ijen isn’t just any volcano, it’s a sulfur volcano.

Colorful and poisonous, Kawah Ijen Volcano has an active sulfur mine in its center where miners work 24/7 hauling baskets of bright yellow rocks from the inner crater. The sulfur mine lies on the shores of a bright baby-blue acid lake, whose PH is comparable to battery acid. During the nighttime, tourists can witness sulfurous fumes self-combust and ignite into the world-famous “Blue Fire”.  Mt. Kawah Ijen Volcano is one of the only sites in the entire world where naturally occurring blue fire can be seen.

A hiker wearing red pants stands at the edge of Kawah Ijen Volcano's crater rim. In the distance you can see the acid lake in the crater.

Located on East Java, an island just west of Bali, getting to Kawah Ijen is quite tricky for most travelers visiting Bali. You need to take a 3-5 hour car ride, depending on your starting point in Bali, all the way to the furthest western part of Bali. From there, you can take a ferry to East Java, and then another car around 40 minutes to the base of Kawah Ijen Volcano. 👉 This overnight Kawah Ijen tour from Bali  includes all transport from central Bali to Kawah Ijen, all entrance fees, tour guide services, and meals.

Blogger Katie Caf at Tumpak Sewu Waterfall in East Java, Indonesia.

4. Mt. Bromo & Ijen Volcanos: 3-Days in East Java

Mt. Bromo is one of the most amazing volcano views in all of Indonesia, in my opinion, I believe it to be an even more impressive volcano than Mt. Batur in Bali. However, Mt. Bromo gets far fewer tourists than Mt. Batur because you cannot visit it on a 1-day tour from Bali.   If you have more time in your Bali travel itinerary, it’s well worth it to visit East Java on a Multi-Day tour that visits Kawah Ijen Acid Volcano, as well as other adventurous spots such as  Tumpak Sewu Waterfall , and Mount Bromo Volcano.

Located a bit further inland than Kawah Ijen Volcano, Mt. Batur Volcano is best visited on at least a 3-day tour of East Java. The island of Java is much more remote than the neighboring island of Bali. While you won’t get the luxury cafes and beach clubs you can expect in Bali, East Java is the best spot in all of Indonesia for adventure tourism.

Colorful tents set up at the peak of Mt. Rinjani volcano in Lombok, Indonesia.

5. Mount Rinjani 3-Day / 2-Night Trek – Lombok

Mt. Rinjani is the highest point on the island of Lombok, which is an island located immediately East of Bali.  You can easily get to Lombok by fast boat, local ferry, or by flying. Most travelers choose to visit Lombok after visiting the  Gili Islands  from Bali, as it’s just a 20-minute or so boat ride from the Gilis.

Often touted as being like “what Bali was 20 years ago”, Lombok is a relatively untouched paradise – Filled with lots of great surfing, waterfalls, and beaches. Mt. Rinjani is the only notable volcano on Lombok, and it’s the toughest hike on this list. Perfect for serious trekkers, Mt. Rinjani is usually done by a 3-day / 2-night trek up to the volcano’s caldera.

🥾 Hike Difficulty: 2-3 Day Treks – At 3,726m from its highest peak, Mt. Rinjani is the second tallest volcano in all of Indonesia!

trekking to Mount Kelimutu Lake is one of the best things to do in Flores, in the east Nusa Tenggara regency of indonesia.

6. Mount Kelimutu 3-Color Lake Volcano – Flores Island

Mount Kelimutu within Kelimutu National Park is renowned for harboring a volcano that cradles a tri-colored lake within its volcanic basin. Kelimutu’s three lakes, which are vibrant shades of red, green, and blue, are steeped in local lore. According to the beliefs of the indigenous people, Mae, the deity presiding over the afterlife, once chose this sacred spot to gather and safeguard the souls of the departed. These three mystical bodies of water are known as Tiwu ata Mbupu, meaning the “Lake of Old People,” Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, signifying the “Lake of Young Men & Women,” and Tiwu Ata Polo, denoting the “Enchanted Lake.”

✈️ How to Get There: Mount Kelimutu is located on the outer island of Flores, which many travelers in Indonesia visit after doing a boat tour of the Komodo Islands. You can visit Flores, the Komodo Islands, and Kelimutu Volcano by taking a quick 1-hour flight from Bali.

🥾 Trek Length: Kelimutu 3-Color Crater Lakes is most typically visited via a 2-day / 1-night guided tour.

Blogger Katie Caf stands at the viewpoint at the top of Padar Islands in Komodo National Park, Indonesia.

7. Padar Island Viewpoint via Komodo National Park Multi-Day Boat Tour

Not necessarily a volcano tour in the traditional sense, but I felt like it was worth mentioning in this article because Komodo National Park is made up of an archipelago of around 30 islands, formed by both active and inactive volcanos.  The most astounding view in Komodo is the hike up to the Padar Island viewpoint, which is done for sunrise and sunset. You can only visit the Komodo Islands via island-hopping cruises, which are usually 3-days/2-nights or 4-days/3-nights.

✈️ How to Get to the Komodos from Bali: It’s a little difficult to  get to the Komodo Islands from Bali , you can either take a short and cheap flight to Labuan Bajo, Flores, which is called the “Gateway to Komodo National Park”. Or, you can take the “Backpackers Boat” from Lombok, which sails through the Komodos on the way to Flores.

volcano tour in bali

💰 Backpackers Budget Komodo Boat: The Backpacker’s Boat is super cheap, but also has very rough conditions (everyone sleeps on mats on the floor in a communal room).> > I recommend Wanua Adventure Tour Company, you have to book in cash.

🚢 Classic Komodo Cruise: For most travelers, a standard 3-day/2-night Komodo Island-Hopping Boat Cruise is the best choice. These boats feature fantastic food, a liveaboard chef, AC, and proper beds for your journey through the Komdodo Archipelago.

🥾 Easiest Volcano Hike on This List: It’s only 15-30 minutes to the top of Padar viewpoint – If you want a short, but amazing, volcano mountain hike on your trip to Indonesia, Padar Island in Komodo National Park is probably my overall favorite.

Everything to Know about the Volcanoes in Bali

  • April 21, 2024

The volcanoes in Bali are one of the most underrated aspects of the island.

Tourists swarm to the beaches, rice terraces and cliff sides, but only a few adventurous explorers really bask in the magic of Bali’s towering peaks.

Sitting on the ‘ring of fire’, Bali is home to a number of volcanoes, including one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, Mount Batur.

For an adventure seeker who wants to join a volcano tour in Bali and hike the steep slopes, or for those who simply want to sit enjoying a coffee with a beautiful view of the mountain range, we have all the information you need.

Mount Batur

volcano tour in bali

Mount Batur is the most well known of Bali’s volcanoes thanks to its easy hike to the summit and sunrise views.

It is also the most active volcano, with mini eruptions happening every few years.

With a scenic lake view, even those who don’t want to tackle the hike will visit to take in the magical scenery and enjoy a cup of coffee from a mountain view cafe.

Hiking Mount Batur

The Mount Batur sunrise trek is one of the biggest draws for tourists to the volcano.

Starting in the early morning, an expert guide will lead you up the rocky trail to the summit of the volcano where you will be greeted with outstanding sunrise views – and a snack!

Considered a ‘medium’ difficulty hike, you don’t have to be a professional to try it out, but need a relatively good level of fitness.

Be sure to pack something warm as it can get very chilly before the sunrises! It is one of the easiest hikes in Bali for those who want to dip their toes into the trekking options on the island.

Where to Stay Near Mount Batur

If you need a place to rest before your big hike, or want to relax in the shadow of the volcano with scenic views, there are many spots to stay around – and even on – Mount Batur.

Batur Volcano Guesthouse

The simplicity of this guesthouse is easily overlooked with the unbeatable volcano and valley views that surround it. Dip into the shared swimming pool and bask in the glory of Bali’s magnificent nature.

Mount Batur Villa

An expansive shared villa situated on the hillside beside Mount Batur, you can wake up each morning to foggy volcano and valley views – perfect!

Mount Batur View Restaurants and Cafes

For a quick bite to eat after a long car ride, or your early morning breakfast, these cafes in Kintamani are a great place to stop off and dig into a delicious meal all while overlooking unbeatable Mount Batur views.

Mount Agung and Bratan Volcano

volcano tour in bali

The two tallest volcanoes in Bali are Mount Agung and Bratan Volcano.

Both active volcanoes, Mount Agung has been bubbling under the surface since its latest eruption in 2019 that famously brought the island to a halt.

Bratan Volcano, however, has not erupted in thousands of years – that’s not to say it won’t happen.

Mount Agung

Reaching up to the highest point of Bali, Mount Agung – also known as Gunung Agung meaning ‘Great Mountain’ – sits in the quiet rural area of Karangasem looming over vast jungles, and just a short drive from the beach.

Due to its gigantic height, Mount Agung has a strong influence on the island’s weather including the climate and rainfall.

After years of sitting dormant, in 1963 Mount Agung had a huge eruption that tore through the surrounding villages and farmlands.

Interestingly, the lava didn’t touch the mother temple ‘ Besakih’ which is situated on the southern side of the volcano, reinforcing to the local Balinese that it was a spiritual eruption, and they are being kept safe.

In 2019 bubbling smoke clouds and mini eruptions could be seen billowing out from the crater of the volcano, but it never properly erupted. Until now the island remains on alert!

Hiking Mount Agung

Hiking Mount Agung is definitely not for the weak hearted. Towering to over 3,000m above sea level, it is one of the hardest treks on the island.

Leading through jungles until rocky pathways, hiking Mount Agung is perfect for an adventurer looking for a challenge. With incredible views from the top, it makes the 6 hour hike worthwhile.

Where to Stay Near Mount Agung

There aren’t any places to stay on Mount Agunge, or even in the immediate surroundings. But, here are some of my favourite hideaways where you have undisturbed views of the towering Great Mountain.

Palmterrace

volcano tour in bali

A private apartment with a pool and expansive jungle views with the towering Mount Agung in the far-off distance, Palmterrace is a comfortable and relaxing getaway in the heart of Karangasem.

After a day of touring the island, sitting down for a delicious meal with a view of Mount Agung will be the highlight of the day.

These few restaurants boast incredible volcano views with hearty menus.

  • Mahagiri Panoramic Resort & Restaurant

Bratan Volcano

volcano tour in bali

Nearly 800m shorter than Mount Agung, Bratan Volcano contains 3 beautiful lakes. The name Bratan is often used to reference a number of volcano peaks in the area including Mount Catur.

Located at the heart of the island, in the foggy, cool area of Bedugul, Bratan hasn’t had an eruption in thousands of years – so long ago in fact, the last eruption isn’t even recorded.

One of Bali’s most famous Hindu temples, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, is located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the shadow of the volcano, and is the biggest draw to the area.

Exploring Bratan

There is a lot to see and do around Bratan including lakes, water temples and hot springs as well as dormant cones within the volcanic complex.

  • Lake Bratan – as mentioned, Lake Bratan is home to Pura Ulun Danu Beratan. Filled with small temples and steeped in culture, it is one of the must see sights when in the hilly region of Bedugul.
  • Mount Catur – the 4th tallest ‘volcano’ in Bali, Mount Catur is considered an easy hike. Starting at Lake Bratan the hike leads you through thick forest until you reach the top with vast views of Bedugul and the lake.
  • Bali Botanic Gardens – a grand 157 hectare botanic garden among the mountain range of Bedugul, Bali Botanic Gardens is a calm day out where you can see unique and rare tropical plants, flowers and sprawling lawns.
  • Lake Bayun – the biggest of the Bratan crater lakes, Lake Bayun is surrounded by cafes and restaurants where you can dine with unbeatable lake and mountain range views.
  • Lake Tamblingan – the lesser visited of the Bedugul lakes, Lake Tamblingan is a peaceful place away from tourists where you can enjoy amazing scenic views in a calmer, more serene setting.

Where to Stay Near Bratan Volcano

For a romantic escape with your loved one, the hotels and villas around Bratan Volcano are a beautiful place to look out over vast views and enjoy the outstanding nature of Bali. They are also the perfect place to rest before a big day of hiking!

Bratan View Restaurants and Cafes

There’s not much more enjoyable than sitting back for a delicious Indonesian meal with views of the huge Bratan mountain range right in front of you.

  • Strawberry Hill Hotel and Cafe

Other Bali Volcanoes

volcano tour in bali

There are a few smaller, lesser known volcanoes in Bali that lay dormant, or are a part of the wider mountain range around its famous siblings.

Equally as impressive, a hiker’s dream and more peaceful than the others, these are worth checking out if you have some extra hours to kill or would like to visit the more ‘untouched’ areas of Bali.

Mount Abang

Originally part of Mount Batur, after a huge eruption Mount Abang split from the bigger volcano and now resides at the other side of the lake.

An easy, yet still challenging, hike for climbers, it is not as commonly visited by tourists.

Mount Batukaru

Mount Batukaru is located on the West side of Bali and is the second tallest mountain on the island.

Covered in thick forest and jungles, it is a challenging hike for those who don’t mind trekking vegetation.

From the top of the summit you will enjoy vast views of the whole island, including the tip of Mount Agung.

There is also Mount Adeng, Mount Lesong, Mount Lempuyang, Mount Pohon, Mount Prapat Agung and Mount Sengayang.

Each holding their own spiritual significance to the island, these less famous volcanoes and peaks are still worthy of a mention.

Final Thoughts

And there you have it, all the volcanoes in Bali that will challenge your fitness and humble your existence.

These huge and imposing mountains are dotted around the island only adding to the diverse and expansive scenery of Bali.

Whether you plan to hike to the top, or simply admire from afar, the volcanoes of Bali are definitely worth a visit.

Mount Batur Hike In Bali: How To Do The Sunrise Trek

The Mount Batur hike in Kintamani , Bali is one of the most popular and enjoyable sunrise trekking experiences you can have in Indonesia.

It’s not very hard to do the Mount Batur Bali trek from any part of the island, and the guided trek takes you up a still active volcano — Gunung Batur — with a summit elevation of more than 1,700 meters.

Mount Batur sunrise trekking is especially popular because you can catch amazing views of the sunrise from the top of the mountain, usually in a sea of orange clouds. Sunset trekking can also be interesting if you don’t like the idea of waking up early.

I’ve done this Bali volcano hike many times over the years, and the Mt Batur trek is always a completely memorable adventure in its own way.

Mount Batur is currently open for hiking as of 2024. Back in May 2023, there was some talk from the former Bali governor about banning tourists from hiking the mountain, but thankfully that hasn’t happened.

In this guide, I’ll explain how you can hike Mount Batur for sunrise or sunset, with or without a guide, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Quick Facts

  • Distance: 3 – 5 kilometers (2-3 miles) return
  • Elevation Gain: 500 meters (1,650 feet)
  • Top Elevation: 1,717 meters (5,633 feet)
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Duration: 2 – 4 hours return

Best Mount Batur Tour Guide

First of all, if you’re looking for a vetted tour guide for visiting Mount Batur Bali, here’s a top-rated Mount Batur sunrise trekking tour from GetYourGuide starting at 500k Rupiah ($32 USD) that includes optional hotel pickup and drop-off from places like Jimbaran, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Sanur, Kerobokan, and Canggu.

They also have a high-rated trek that includes the natural hot springs in Kintamani, and optional transfer from Ubud or Nusa Dua.

These prices are fairly similar to what we see being quoted on the ground in Bali, and the online reviews are highly positive too. The tour includes breakfast and trekking equipment like poles, torches, and drinking water.

We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Where Is Mount Batur?

The Mount Batur volcano is located in the Kintamani highlands, on the northeast part of Bali island.

It’s about a 2 hour drive to Mount Batur from Canggu, Kuta, Sanur, or Seminyak, and about a 1 hour drive from Ubud.

Or, if you stay a night at a hotel directly in Kintamani, you can walk to the volcano from your hotel! That’s how we did our latest Mount Batur sunrise trek.

About The Gunung Batur Volcano

Mount Batur (also known as ‘Gunung Batur’ in Indonesian) is part of an active volcano that’s believed to have formed in a massive apocalyptic eruption about 25,000 years ago.

At one time (before it blew its top), Batur was apparently more than 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) tall — making it even bigger than Mount Agung , Bali’s current tallest volcano (which is already huge).

Almost two dozen eruptions have happened at Gunung Batur since 1804 when recording first started, and it last erupted in 1999-2000.

That sounds scary, but any signs of impending volcanic activity are constantly monitored by the Indonesian government so Batur is generally very safe to climb.

Since 2015, UNESCO lists the Mount Batur caldera as a global geopark for its fantastic volcanic landscapes.

Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking

• starting the mount batur hike.

Mount Batur sunrise tours start with a very early morning pickup (2 AM-ish) so your guide can drive you all the way to Kintamani for a hike to the top of the volcano in time for sunrise.

The Mount Batur hike is very popular, so you’ll most likely be trekking in the company of dozens (if not hundreds) of other international and local tourists all sharing the same path.

At the top of the Mount Batur view point, you cross the rim of the volcano and then you’re greeted by packs of Balinese monkeys eager to share your sunrise (and your snacks)! Keep a close eye on them.

On our last hike to Mt Batur, one monkey stole our entire snack bag, and by the time we got it back he had looted the Pocari Sweat and drank it in front of us. Nakal monyet .

• How Hard Is The Hike?

The hike up Mount Batur takes about 2 hours (give or take) depending on your fitness level, and it’s steep but not dangerous at all as long as you stay on the path. If you’re feeling unsure about this hike, just DO IT!

Anyone can do the trek, but I wouldn’t take that to mean it’s a complete joke either. The climb up is a decent calf killer, and the walk down is a bit of an ankle buster.

It’s a fair bit of elevation gain. You will be plenty sore after the hike! Plan on a Balinese foot massage afterwards.

If you want a harder volcano hike than Mt. Batur with less crowds, consider doing the Mount Agung hike in the same area. However, the climb up Agung is a much, much tougher hike than Mt. Batur.

Kintamani and Lake Batur

• Mount Batur Hike Distance

The Mount Batur hike distance depends on where you start and end your trekking, but generally it’s about 3-5 kilometers (2-3 miles) roundtrip.

AllTrails (and some travel blogs) are incorrect for this hike when they list it at 9.3 kilometers (5.8 miles). Looking at a Mount Batur map, that’s only the distance if you completely circle both volcano craters, and start from the bottom of the road in Toya Bungkah village.

The real Mount Batur hike distance is quite a bit shorter, so keep that in mind when you see inflated figures like that.

• Mount Batur Height

The Mount Batur height at its summit is 1,717 meters (5,633 feet). You don’t need to acclimatize to altitude before doing the hike.

It’s a fair change in elevation if you’re coming from sea level in the touristy areas of south Bali, but it’s definitely not enough of a change to cause altitude sickness, so you don’t need to worry about anything of that sort.

• Mount Batur Elevation Gain

The Mount Batur elevation gain depends on where you start and end your hike, but generally it’s about 500 meters (1,650 feet).

• Mount Batur Weather

The Mount Batur weather is quite a bit cooler than other parts of Bali, although it’s never frigid.

Overnight temperatures can drop below 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit), and the wind can make it feel colder than that.

You’ll definitely want to bring a light jacket to wear at the top of the Mount Batur view point, and that way you can stay warm while waiting for the sunrise.

After the Mount Batur sunrise, the weather warms up and you’ll be ready to shed the jacket on your way down.

Speaking of weather, what if clouds or fog roll in and block your view of the sunrise? Unfortunately it happens sometimes, and I’ve seen it myself.

Regardless of how much planning you do, ultimately there is no way to predict the weather on Mount Batur. You just have to give it a shot, and hope for the best.

• Mount Batur Sunrise

The Mount Batur sunrise is an awesome sight to see. It’s so worthwhile.

On the right you have Lake Batur and the peaks of Gunung Abang, with the Mount Agung volcano just barely visible above them.

Directly behind the sunrise is the Bali Sea, and on a clear day you can even make out the shape of Mount Rinjani on Lombok island way off in the distance!

• Breakfast At Mt Batur

After sunrise at Mount Batur, it’s time for breakfast. Most tour guides include this for free in the trekking packages, and you’re going to be hungry after spending your morning climbing a mountain.

Since Mt Batur is an active volcano, there are small heat vents to be found at the top of the crater, and the tour guides will usually let you cook eggs by sticking them in the heat vents.

It’s yet another fun and unique activity to enjoy on this Bali volcano! I mean really, how often do you get the chance to cook eggs with heat vents from an active volcano?

What To Bring

  • Jacket: Bring an extra layer for the Mount Batur sunrise trek. You’ll shed your jacket right away as you heat up, but then you’ll probably want it again at the top while you sit and wait for the sunrise.
  • Footwear: Regular shoes are fine, but sturdy hiking shoes are better for the Mount Batur hike. You can also do it with hiking sandals, but I wouldn’t wear flip flops. You’ll be walking on slippery gravel and steep inclines or declines at times.
  • Poncho: If you go during the rainy season (especially December to February), you might want to bring a rain jacket just in case.
  • Water: Most Batur tours will give you a small bottle of water for the hike, but if you can bring 1L or 1.5L per person that’s better.
  • Snacks: Again, even though most tours include free breakfast, you’ll probably be wanting energy snacks to go with it.
  • Headlight: Mount Batur sunrise trekking tours will provide cheapo flashlights, but a quality headlight will be even better.
  • Camera: Essential. A small tripod could be handy too since it’ll be dark before the sunrise.

You can hike Batur any time of the year, but the best months are April to November, when there’s less rain and the mountain visibility is better. June through September are especially dry, and that’s when you have the best chance of seeing a spectacular sunrise.

Mount Batur Deaths & Safety

Accidents and deaths are rare at Mount Batur, although a 25 year old Swedish tourist unfortunately fell into the crater and died in 2010, and a 70 year old American fell to his death in 2022.

These are two of the only confirmed Mount Batur deaths to date, even though hundreds of tourists hike the volcano for sunrise every day.

The hiking path is quite safe as long as you stay away from steep edges. The drop-offs are easy to avoid as long as you can see them.

You should always have a light for hiking in the dark (Mt. Batur guides can provide this), and please don’t ever try to take selfies or other pictures near steep cliff edges.

As long as you follow these rules, the Mount Batur hike is very safe and even kids can do it.

Monkeys at Gunung Batur

King of the mountain. The Mount Batur monkeys can be sneaky.

Mount Batur Tour Guide / Mafia Requirement

Even though it’s a fairly simple hike that could be done solo, Mount Batur is controlled by a local trekking group (mafia) that doesn’t let anyone climb the volcano without paying for a local guide.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve climbed Mount Everest and you’re the picture of fitness, you’ll still be forced to hire a local guide and pay your dues for the Mount Batur sunrise trek.

People who try to climb the mountain without a guide have reported being verbally abused by locals (“you’re a terrorist”) and even shoved, kicked, or physically threatened. Hopefully the Bali government will step in and put an end to this.

As much as I don’t like rewarding this kind of bad behavior, keep in mind it is motivated by poverty. Kintamani is a very poor area of Bali. There are also a few other benefits to hiring a guide:

  • Transport: Who wants to be driving in a foreign country at 2 AM? Better to pay someone else to do it for you.
  • Navigation: Even though the path is easy to find in the daytime, it’s definitely more tricky in the dark before sunrise.
  • Assistance: Guides will give you a hand on the mountain, and help you snap photos with the sunrise.
  • Supplies: Most tours include some things you’ll need for Mount Batur sunrise trekking, like breakfast, bottled water, flashlights, etc.
  • Peace of Mind: Is $30 or $40 USD really worth getting into a fight with the locals on your holiday?

Mount Batur Without Guide – Directions

If you’re resolved to hike Mount Batur without a tour guide, the best way to attempt it is on the north side of the mountain .

The trail on the north side is more quiet and only seems to get used by people starting directly from Kintamani village (i.e. locals and overnighters) doing the Mount Batur sunrise trek.

This side wasn’t monitored by anyone when we went, but that may change. My best advice is to navigate to Red Lava Campground and then walk up, up, up the slope.

The path to the top of Mt.Batur isn’t too hard to follow without a guide, even in the dark — just follow the elevation. There are dozens of converging trails that all meet at the summit. The only challenge will be finding the start, so give yourself some extra time for that.

Slopes of Mt Batur

Morning views at Mount Batur Bali

Mount Batur Afternoon Trekking

If you’re not really interested in seeing the Mount Batur sunrise, or the early start won’t work for you, then it’s always possible to do morning or afternoon trekking at Mount Batur.

You won’t see the same epic sunrise at the Mount Batur view point, of course, and the other downside is that it may be harder to find other travelers to share a group with you. Plus, fog is more likely to block the views altogether.

Morning and afternoon aren’t popular times to hike this volcano, but that can be a good thing if you’re wanting to avoid the big crowds.

Mount Batur Sunset Trekking

If you don’t like waking up early for the sunrise, and would rather stay an extra night in Kintamani, then it’s also possible to do sunset trekking at Mount Batur.

The Mount Batur sunset isn’t quite as dramatic as sunrise since you don’t have Gunung Abang in the background, but you’re still bound to get some great views.

Better yet, if you feel like camping, you can do a 2-day Mount Batur trek and witness both the sunrise and the sunset! This is a unique way to get more time on the mountain.

Where To Stay

Nowadays there are lots of great budget friendly Kintamani hotels if you want to stay overnight before your Mount Batur sunrise trek. See below for some recommendations.

The main advantage of staying in Kintamani is that you have easier access to the Mt. Batur volcano so you can wake up later for the hike. That means starting at 4 AM, instead of 1-2 AM if you start from other areas of Bali like Ubud, Kuta, or Sanur.

The other reason to stay in Kintamani is that there are some great things to see besides the volcano . You can soak in the natural hot springs at Lake Batur, visit the traditional villages and temples, etc.

Mount Batur Hot Spring

Since Mount Batur is an active volcano, there is also a hot spring nearby by the name of Toya Devasya.

The facilities are nothing special, but the hot spring has an amazing view of Lake Batur and the surrounding mountains — almost like an infinity pool.

Many Mount Batur tours include this hot spring as part of the itinerary, and it’s a great way to relax after the hike!

A dip at the Mount Batur hot spring (Toya Devasya) is a great way to relax after the hike.

Is Mount Batur Worth It?

Now it’s time for the most important question of all — is Mount Batur worth it? Yes, I definitely think so!

Aside from the novelty of hiking on an active volcano, with steaming heat vents and playful monkeys, you also get to witness one of the most amazing sunrise views in Bali, Indonesia. I don’t normally like waking up so early for sunrise, but this one is worth it!

Generally you won’t see flowing red hot lava at Batur, but the entire southwestern slope of the volcano is surrounded by a field of old black lava rock that’s now used for dirt biking tours and other fun activities. Overall, Mount Batur is well worth a visit when you’re in Bali!

Is Mount Batur Open / Closed?

Yes, Mount Batur is currently open to tourists and hikers as of 2024! There are no impending plans to close it. I’ll update this travel guide if anything changes.

Back in May 2023, the former governor of Bali threatened to close all of the island’s 22 mountains to hikers because of one or two tourists misbehaving. Thankfully there was a lot of pushback on this idea, and so far no new law has been issued.

The mountain is rarely closed to the public, and that would generally only happen temporarily if there’s some kind of unusual volcanic activity or other safety concerns. Right now it’s still open.

Happy travels!

Do you have any recommendations for the best shoes (for women) for this? I’m coming to Bali in early September from America & im trying to pack light. Would all purpose “hiking sandals” (from Keen, Merrell, or Teva – for example) be acceptable?

' src=

Hi Mick! Hiking boots with ankle support would be best, but you could do it in hiking sandals if you’re needing to save space in your bag. It’s not a very long hike, but the gravel can be slippery, especially on the way back down, so you’ll want something with a bit of grip. As long as you watch your footing, I think that would be fine.

I’m looking to travel to Bali in the next month, and have come across a few sites and posts that say the tourist bans have now become official. Any truth to that? I haven’t been able to find any legitimate /government-backed articles about it, but the rumors have definitely got me feeling concerned. Hiking Mt. Batur is one of the highlights for me.

Hi Bree. Currently Mount Batur is still open for hiking, so nothing has changed yet. Personally I think it’s very unlikely there will be any ban, but I’ll be monitoring the situation closely and I’ll update this article if anything changes.

The Balinese Barong and the Kris dance is just one among the most emblematic dance dramas on the island. It is also another narrative dance that narrates a fight between the good and the bad. This dance is a traditional illustration of the Balinese way of representing mythology, which makes myth and history merge into one reality.

The "Barong" is a creature and a lion-like character in the Balinese mythological beliefs. He is surely the king of spirits, superior to the ranks of good, and the adversary of the "Rangda", the ruler of demons and the mother of most of the guardians of the spirit.

The struggles between Rangda and Barong are demonstrated in the general performance of the Barong dance to symbolize the endless battle between the bad and the good or the right and wrong.

Elephant Cave temple was constructed in the ninth century and was offered as a sanctuary.

The complex features of each Hindu & Buddhist figures as the cave has Lingam and Yoni, the icon of Shiva along with the Ganesha's statue, while beside the river there are carved objects of stupas and also chattra, images of Buddhism.

On the facade of the cave, there exists a relief of several threatening creatures and demons carved into the rocks at the cave entry. The main appearance was once viewed as an elephant, for that reason the nickname is Elephant Cave.

The site is cited in Desawarnana , the Javanese poem composed in 1365. A vast bathing area of the location was not dug until the 1950s. These apparently have been created to defend against evil spirits.
