THE USED Announces Summer 2024 Tour With STORY OF THE YEAR

THE USED have announced they will be hitting the road this summer on a headlining tour joined by special guests STORY OF THE YEAR and AMIRA ELFEKY . The trek will be visiting cities across United States and Canada, kicking off on June 20 in Gary, Indiana and making stops in Minneapolis, Cleveland, Montreal, Baltimore, Asbury Park, and more before wrapping up in Norfolk, Virginia on July 13.

STORY OF THE YEAR frontman Dan Marsala states: " THE USED have been big brothers to STORY OF THE YEAR for over 20 years. They were the one of first bands to take us on tour after we finished 'Page Avenue' and they played a big part in STORY OF THE YEAR becoming the band we are today. I've always admired how THE USED were the fearless leaders of our early 2000s scene and I'm so proud of the friendship that we built so many years ago. THE USED and STORY OF THE YEAR ... that just sounds right!"

Last year, THE USED released their newest album, "Toxic Positivity" . Described as a "day-in-the-life journey of a depressed, anxiety-ridden person" by McCracken , the tell-all record shares the highs and lows of depression and addiction through a cohesive body of work, speaking to the ever-changing headspace that he was experiencing at the time of writing. "This record is quite tough for me to listen to," he adds, "because it's a reflection of times in my life that have been some of my lowest ever."

STORY OF THE YEAR released their most recent album, "Tear Me To Pieces" , in 2023 via SharpTone Records . The Used has been touring internationally in 2024, and it looks like they’ve finally added some North American dates to their trek. Story Of The Year and Amira Elfeky will support the band on their summer tour of the US and Canada, and The Used will also perform at a few festivals as well.

The Used 2024 Tour this summer will kick off on June 20 in Gary, Indiana at Hard Rock Casino. Pending extra final tour dates, it looks like the tour will end on July 13 in Norfolk, Virginia at The NorVa.

Amazing show. They always do a great job of playing their new music, but also playing old songs. We waiting out back and met the guys. They were extremely nice and signed autographs and took pictures with us!

Great show! The Used did a fantastic job and I had a blast. The venue was packed, security did their job well and everyone had a great time! The Used played all of the classics and some of their new material, which was great too! Their showmanship was hands down excellent, very engaging and loving of their fans!

To tired to talk smack. Only issue is they where two,hours from opening and the opening band smh.

But, bert brought the house down! Just amazing. Also, they played a lot of hits too!

The Used reveal summer 2024 North American tour with Story Of The Year and Amira Elfeky

The Used will be touring across North America this summer.

Revealed yesterday , the band’s tour will kick off on June 20 at Hard Rock Casino – Northern Indiana in Gary, and it’ll conclude on July 13 at The NorVa in Norfolk. Joining The Used as support for this trek are veteran pop-punk band Story Of The Year and newcomer Amira Elfeky.

The Used vocalist Bert McCracken said this about the trek:

“Stoked to be touring with some of our oldest friends in the industry. We’ve always been huge fans of Big Blue Monkey! Can’t wait to see Amira Elfeky live as well!!!”

Story Of The Year vocalist Dan Marsala also said:

The Used have announced a new 2023 US tour kicking off in early September. The outing will feature specials guests Sleeping with Sirens and Dead American.

The tour launches September 5th in Birmingham, Alabama, and runs through an October 11th gig in Paso Robles, California. A Live Nation pre-sale starts Wednesday (June 28th) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster using the code DISCO , while general sales begin on Friday (June 30th). Fans can also check for deals or pick up tickets to sold-out shows via StubHub , where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.

The announcement comes as The Used wrap up their co-headlining spring/summer North American outing with Pierce the Veil. That trek has a handful of shows left, ending July 2nd in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Used are touring in support of their latest album, Toxic Positivity , which arrived last month. Sleeping with Sirens released their newest full-length, Complete Collapse , in 2022.

Pilgrim Deaths in Mecca Put Spotlight on Underbelly of Hajj Industry

More than 1,300 people died, and a Saudi official said most of them were not registered for the pilgrimage. That left them with little protection from the heat.

More than 1,300 people died making the Islamic pilgrimage of hajj in Saudi Arabia this month, the vast majority of whom the Saudi government said did not have permits. Many walked for miles in scorching heat after paying thousands of dollars to illicit or fraudulent tour operators.

While pilgrims with permits are transported around the holy city of Mecca in air-conditioned buses and rest in air-conditioned tents, unregistered ones are often exposed to the elements. In recent days, as temperatures surpassed 120 degrees, some pilgrims described watching people faint and passing bodies in the street.

On Sunday, in an interview on state television, the Saudi health minister, Fahd al-Jalajel, said that 83 percent of the 1,301 reported deaths involved pilgrims who lacked permits.

“The rise in temperatures during the hajj season represented a big challenge this year,” he said. “Unfortunately — and this is painful for all of us — those who didn’t have hajj permits walked long distances under the sun.”

Mr. al-Jalajel’s remarks came after days of silence from the Saudi government over the fatalities during the hajj, an arduous and deeply spiritual ritual that Muslims are encouraged to perform once in their lifetimes if they are physically and financially able.

With nearly two million participating each year, it is not unusual for pilgrims to die from heat stress, illness or chronic disease. It is unclear if the number of deaths this year was higher than usual, because Saudi Arabia does not regularly report those statistics. Last year, 774 pilgrims died from Indonesia alone, and in 1985, more than 1,700 people died around the holy sites, most of them from heat stress, a study at the time found.

But because so many of those who died had no permits, this year’s toll exposed an underbelly of tour operators and smugglers around the world who profit off Muslims desperate to make the journey.

The deaths also laid bare what appeared to be a wide-scale failure of Saudi immigration and security procedures aimed at preventing unregistered pilgrims from reaching the holy sites, including a security cordon around Mecca that locks down weeks before hajj.

Despite those efforts, an estimated 400,000 undocumented people tried to perform the pilgrimage this year, a senior Saudi official told Agence France-Presse, speaking on the condition of anonymity. The hajj has also been the scene of several catastrophes over the years, including a stampede in 2015 that killed more than 2,200 people .

Saudi officials did not respond to requests for comment.

In interviews with The New York Times, however, hajj tour operators, pilgrims and relatives of the dead described easily exploited loopholes that allow people to travel to the kingdom with a tourist or visitor visa ahead of hajj, usually assisted by tour operators in their home countries. Once they arrive, they find a network of illegal brokers and smugglers who offer their services and sometimes abandon them to fend for themselves, they said.

The number of unregistered pilgrims appears to have been driven up this year by rising economic desperation in countries like Egypt and Jordan. An official hajj package can cost more than $5,000 or $10,000, depending on a pilgrim’s country of origin — beyond the means of many hoping to make the trip.

Marwa, a 32-year-old Egyptian woman whose parents performed hajj without an official permit this year, said that they had paid around $2,000 for their journey, facilitated by an agent in Egypt and a broker in Saudi Arabia. They felt that they had to go soon because, as Egypt’s currency loses value , their savings shrink every year, she said. Marwa asked to be identified only by her first name to avoid legal repercussions.

Several countries with large numbers of deceased pilgrims have moved quickly to contain the fallout.

On Friday, the president of Tunisia, which counted more than 50 pilgrims among the dead, fired the country’s religious affairs minister. In Jordan, which recorded the deaths of at least 99 pilgrims, the public prosecutor opened an investigation into illegal hajj routes. And in Egypt, the authorities said that they would revoke the licenses of 16 companies that issued visas to pilgrims without providing adequate services.

“There’s so much greed around this business,” said Iman Ahmed, a co-owner of El-Iman Tours in Cairo.

Ms. Ahmed said that she refused to send unregistered pilgrims on hajj packages but that other Egyptian tour operators and Saudi brokers made big money doing so.

One unregistered pilgrim who died was Safaa al-Tawab, a grandmother from the Egyptian city of Luxor, according to her brother, Ahmed al-Tawab. Ms. al-Tawab, 55, had not been able to obtain a hajj permit but found an Egyptian tour company to take her for around $3,000, he said.

Ms. al-Tawab did not realize that she was violating the rules when she traveled to Saudi Arabia, her brother said, and after she arrived, she told relatives that she had been put in inadequate housing and prevented from going outside. While the tour operator had promised air-conditioned buses to take the pilgrims around Mecca, she instead found herself walking for miles in the heat, Mr. al-Tawab said.

Before the hajj, the Saudi authorities posted billboards and sent a barrage of text messages reminding people that it is illegal to perform the pilgrimage without a permit; violators face fines, deportation and bans on re-entering the kingdom.

Entry to Mecca was barred weeks before hajj for visitors without permits. Yet many pilgrims were able to evade the restrictions, arriving in Mecca early and hiding out, or paying smugglers to ferry them into the city.

One Jordanian pilgrim, who asked to be identified only as Um Abdulrahman, a nickname, because she feared repercussions, said that she encountered several smugglers to help her move around Mecca, including one who charged around $200 to drive her into the city over a rocky mountain route. But she ended up walking for hours in the sun without access to water or bathrooms, she said.

At one point, the police briefly detained her group, wrote down their names and left them in the middle of nowhere, she said. Um Abdulrahman, 49, said she knew her journey was illegal, but that she had not fully grasped the risks.

Even for the young and fit, the hajj is a physically challenging event, and many pilgrims are elderly or ailing by the time they can make the journey. Some believe that the hajj might be their final rite, and that dying in Mecca will confer great blessings.

The Saudi government deploys measures to reduce the effects of extreme heat, including spraying pilgrims with mists of water. One recent study estimated that the incidence of heat stroke at hajj had actually declined — although the researchers warned that could shift as worsening heat caused by climate change outpaces measures to mitigate it.

Abdulhalim Dahir, 31, a Kenyan pilgrim who made the hajj with his brother and father using official permits, said that his journey was smooth, with air-conditioned tents, air-conditioned buses and easy access to water.

“It was an amazing experience — once in a lifetime,” he said.

But even some who were in Mecca legally complained about inadequate facilities for the heat.

Makhdoom Ali, 36, a Pakistani computer engineer who traveled there with his 65-year-old mother, said he had seen several pilgrims collapse from heat exhaustion with no immediate assistance available.

“Many lives could have been saved with better government arrangements,” Mr. Ali said.

Mr. al-Jalajel, the health minister, said that one quarter of the health services provided during hajj were rendered to undocumented pilgrims. “We look at them as a pilgrim, regardless of their permit, race or nationality,” he said.

Among the dead were at least two Americans.

Isatu Wurie, 65, and Alieu Wurie, 71 — Maryland residents — had saved for years to make the pilgrimage, paying $23,000 to a local tour operator, said their daughter, Saida Wurie.

But after they arrived in Mecca, the operator told them to stay in their hotel until permits were issued for them, they told their daughter. Her parents were frustrated because they had believed they were going “by the book,” Ms. Wurie said.

They were still able to perform some of the initial rituals of hajj, and they were “so excited to see the Kaaba,” she said — the cubic structure that Muslims believe was the first house of worship.

The last message she received from her mother said that a bus to take them to one of the sites had not arrived, and that they had been walking for two hours instead.

Despite her frustration at the tour operator, as well as the difficulty of locating their bodies — buried in Mecca — Ms. Wurie believes her parents were filled with joy in their final days.

“They died doing exactly what they wanted to do,” she said. “They’ve always wanted to make it to hajj.”

Benny and the Bets: Should focus go on current form or course form for Rocket Mortgage Classic?

Current form or course form? Where should your focus be when researching winners on the PGA TOUR?

It’s a question I am often asked by the casual bettor, and the easy answer is of course: both. You should pay attention to many things when trying to predict an outcome in a 72-hole event, but sometimes current form outweighs course form and vice-versa.

Let’s use this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic as a case study.

We have had five previous years of the tournament at Detroit Golf Club with Rickie Fowler as last season’s winner. Fowler’s best result at the tournament prior to his win was a T12 but he was coming off a missed cut in 2022. His form leading into the event though was four straight top 13s, three of which were top 10s.

Tony Finau won in Detroit in 2022 after a T53 in his only previous appearance but his form coming in was exceptional … he had just won the 3M Open the week prior.

Cam Davis, the 2021 winner, wasn’t really trending in either category. He had missed his first two cuts in Detroit and was coming off a missed cut leading into his win.

In 2020, Bryson DeChambeau’s win came after six straight top 10s – although they were split either side of the COVID-19 break. Still, three recent top 10s leading in. He hadn’t played the event prior.

And Nate Lashley was the inaugural winner in 2019 after coming off an unexpected T28 in the U.S. Open where he was T6 after the opening round.

To me, this suggest current form is weighted heavier than course form this week. And it makes sense because, basically, this will be a shootout. For all its charms, Detroit Golf Club is at the mercy of the TOUR’s talent pool. IF you can find someone with both, that’s a bonus.

We know it will likely take 20-something under to win this week, which means aggressive golf and plenty of birdies.

Scanning the current form of the field the following players have at least one top-10 or at least two top-20s AND have not missed a cut from their last four starts.

Akshay Bhatia, Joel Dahmen, Ryan Fox, Lee Hodges, Tom Kim, Maverick McNealy, Aaron Rai, Kevin Tway and Matt Wallace fit the profile. Those players are in the ultimate form, so it’s not surprising to see Kim (+1200) and Bhatia (+2000) as two of the favored players this week.

I have a slight concern that both players are facing their ninth and eighth successive weeks, respectively, of golf but as young stars, it’s not as big an issue as it may be for others.

I’ve got the cut-off for good form a little looser than above. For example, Taylor Pendrith has three top 23s in his last four starts and nothing worse than a T33. He is also a recent winner at THE CJ CUP Bryon Nelson – another shootout – and has the bonus of a T14 and T2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic prior. Pendrith also ranks fourth in Strokes Gained: Putting and 24th in Par-5 Scoring.

And Cameron Young, coming off a T9 last week, put up his first decent performance in a while. I’m going to believe it is the start of a good spurt this summer. He was a former runner up in Detroit.

I’ve picked Aaron Rai out of the above list as my top-five choice this week, as he was also T9 in Detroit a year ago. He’s also seventh in SG: Approach and 10th in SG Tee-to-Green.

Outside of current form or course form look to nuggets like these this week:

• All five winners were inside the top four of SG: Tee-to-Green in their win.
• No winner was worse than 22nd in SG: Putting.
• Around a quarter of all approach shots come from inside 125 yards, more than average weeks on TOUR.
• The last three winners all were 12-under on the par 5s for the week, all five were at least 10-under on those holes.
• Surviving the par-3 ninth and par-3 11th holes is critical, two of just four holes (par-4 sixth and par-4 12th) that have averaged over par for the field all five years.
• Winners have seven or less bogeys on the week. Can’t afford to go backwards in a shootout.

Elon Musk gave an early glimpse into SpaceX's new Starfactory production facility.

Just a day before Starship's Flight 4 successfully landed in the ocean, Musk was at the SpaceX site giving science YouTuber Tim Dodd, known by his channel moniker "Everyday Astronaut," an exclusive tour of SpaceX's rocket factory, including the new facility.

Located in south Texas, Starbase, which just a couple of years prior consisted mostly of tents, has now transformed into a massive facility that Musk anticipates will "dramatically improve production."

"We've got this pretty good-looking rocket factory building that we've almost completed," Musk said. "This will enable us to have serialized production of the rocket, especially the ship, which would ultimately, long term, probably be making a thousand a year of the ship."

Musk showed off various sections of the factory, including the Megabay, which holds three booster rockets. Viewers also saw a closeup of the Raptor engines that power Starship's Super Heavy booster.

Musk explained the new design of the next-gen Raptor, which will not require a heat shield but instead will have integral cooling circuits throughout the engine. "So it looks very simple on the outside, but it's complicated on the inside," Musk said.

The SpaceX CEO also took Dodd inside the brand new Starfactory, which, once completed, is expected to have multiple production stations. Musk said that the now barren site "will be filled with equipment in three months."

"We'll finally have a real factory for Starship," Musk said. "Not just making it in tents."

In a second video uploaded a few days later, Musk also toured the launchpad, where the full-stack Starship awaited launch. The spacecraft, which weighs 5,000 tons at liftoff, is the largest flying object of any kind, Musk said.

"I mean, it's a damn tall rocket," he said. "And it's going to get taller."

The billionaire is already planning to add an even taller, more upgraded second launch tower for the next generation of rockets. But for now, Musk is pretty pleased with the orbital launch mount.

"This is the best launch site and the best rocket we've ever made on Starship," he said.

Grammys CEO on Kendrick Lamar’s "Not Like Us": 'Voting Members of the Academy Appreciate Greatness'

The Hot 100 hit is still going strong. But what are its chances at next year's Grammys ceremony?

Kendrick Lamar ’s " Not Like Us " is, without a doubt, one of the biggest songs of 2024. Naturally, some fans have started pondering the Drake diss' Grammys potential.

Thanks to a TMZ paparazzo , Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. has now waded into the discussion. Mason, who’s held the CEO title since 2021, said while making his way through LAX on Monday that he doesn’t "see any reason why" the song wouldn’t be nominated.

"Obviously it’s a hot record," he said. "Amazing artistry, great writing. The talent on that record is incredible. … Kendrick obviously has been successful with the organization so I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t be [nominated]. It’s all about the quality of the record. It’s about the members. If the members like it, it’ll be nominated."

From there, Mason was asked if he thought the diss aspect of the Mustard-assisted song could prove to be a problem in terms of scoring a nomination. Per Mason, it again simply comes down to what members think of any given song.

"I think the voting members of the academy appreciate greatness," Mason said on Monday. "They appreciate what’s hot, what’s going on. That’s a relevant record that’s impacting on so many levels. So much creativity and talent. I like to believe that the academy members recognize that and vote appropriately."

Mason also addressed the hypothetical addition of a diss song category, another issue that’s in the hands of voting members, first and foremost.

Reiterating his prior remarks as the conversation shifted back to "Not Like Us," Mason added, "If the members want it, it will be nominated."

Meanwhile, Kendrick's Hot 100 hit will soon be getting an official video . As previously reported, Complex was on hand for the Compton shoot earlier this month, and excitement, understandably, was contagiously high throughout the production. A release date for the video hasn't been set as of this writing, but it's unlikely fans will have to wait long.

As Mason himself pointed out, Kendrick is indeed no stranger to the Grammys stage. As of 2024, the 37-year-old Pulitzer Prize recipient has been nominated 50 times. Of those nominations, he’s won 17 Grammys, including three for Best Rap Album. His most recent album, 2022’s Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers , was also nominated for Album of the Year at the most recent edition of the Grammys.

Eligibility for the 2025 Grammys, per the Recording Academy, is as follows:

For the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards, recordings must be released between Sept. 16, 2023, and Aug. 30, 2024. To be eligible, recordings must be for sale commercially via general distribution or made available as a digital recording, either for sale or via a recognized streaming service.

The 2025 Grammys ceremony is set for Feb. 2 in Los Angeles.

The Bananas return to Indianapolis for the second summer in a row for three games from Thursday through Saturday; tickets for all three games at Victory Field are already sold out. Each contest is set to begin at 7 p.m. and conclude around 9 p.m.

Savannah's 2024 Banana Ball World Tour began in Tampa Bay, Florida, in February. Since then, the Bananas have played in 12 states before making it to Indiana for the first time since June 2023. By the end of their tour, the Bananas will have competed in 19 of 50 United States.

What rules do the Savannah Bananas use?

The exhibition baseball team is not focused on bringing its fans a traditional look at the National Pastime, as the Georgia-based club throws out almost all of the traditional rules in favor of fun. Although many of the Bananas roster members have backgrounds playing competitive baseball, some are former MLB players, the organization gives fans a ballpark experience no professional team can duplicate.

While the Bananas were a college summer league team from 2016-2022, they have been strictly an entertainment group for the last two years.

Dakota Albritton plays on stilts. Alex Ziegler is known for his ability to balance anything on his nose. Even WWE Superstar and pop culture icon John Cena has played a game with the Bananas.

What to expect at a Savannah Bananas game

The Bananas do the best they can to ensure their events last no longer than two hours to keep their audience engaged. To do so, they made sure their rules helped the process along while also making for the most entertaining experience possible.

If the score is tied when the two-hour time limit hits, a "ShowDown Tiebreaker" will commence. In a three-round affair, points can only be scored if the lone batter in each round scores.

To make scoring easier, the first round is contested with just the pitcher, catcher and one fielder standing in the batter's way. In the second round, that one fielder is taken out of the equation. The one fielder is inserted back into the mix in the third and final round, but the batter hits with the bases loaded.

How do the Bananas keep score?

Against their typical opposing Party Animals, scoring for Banana Ball is as follows: The squad who scores the most runs in an inning earns a point. There is not a set amount of innings for the Bananas, instead, no new inning will begin after an hour and 50 minutes of play has passed.

Whichever team has the most points at the end of play wins, but the journey to get there is rather unique. The Bananas do not allow mound visits, nor do they allow a batter to step outside the batter's box.

There are no walks in Banana Ball. If a fourth ball is thrown in an at-bat, the hitter begins their sprint around the bases. In the meantime, every member of the defense (other than the pitcher or catcher) must touch the ball before attempting to get the runner out.

If a batter doesn't feel like completing their plate appearance or if there is a passed ball during their at-bat, the hitter can steal first base. While in the field, simply catching a fly ball or fielding a ground ball routinely is not enough.

Oftentimes players will perform coordinated dances during play or fielders will attempt back flips before catching a ball. Even fans can affect the outcome of a game, with rules set in place stating that if a fan catches a foul ball, it officially counts as an out.

While the Bananas embrace their comparisons to the Harlem Globetrotters and recognize how ground-breaking the Globetrotters were in the world of entertainment-focused basketball, the Bananas' game is slightly different: the outcome isn't scripted. Their record against the Party Animals is 22-17.

Maryland couple prepared for Hajj pilgrimage, then died in extreme heat

Haja Isatu Wurie and her husband, Alhaji Alieu Dausy Wurie, died in Saudi Arabia on a pilgrimage marred with inadequate resources by the touring company they paid for, their daughter said.

For weeks, Alhaji Alieu Dausy Wurie and his wife, Haja Isatu Wurie, prepared for the Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest city for Muslims.

The couple walked two to three miles a day in their neighborhood of Bowie, Md., to get ready for the trip they had always wanted to take together, said their daughter, Saida Wurie. They bought insoles for their shoes. They purchased liquid IVs. They prayed.

But, ultimately, that preparation would not be enough to make sure they made it home safely.

Alieu Wurie, 71, and Isatu Wurie, 65, were among the more than 1,300 people who died in extreme heat this year in Mecca, the birthplace of the prophet Muhammad. Their family says they were failed repeatedly by the Maryland-based tourism company they hired.

Saudi authorities said about 1.8 million people made the journey this year to the holy city where the prophet Muhammad is believed to have recited the first revelations of the Quran. Making a trek to the city is among the pillars of Islam.

But in weather as hot as 110 degrees, proper resources are necessary for a safe journey. Saida Wurie said the trip for her parents, who were part of a group of between 80 and 100 people traveling with the tourism company, was rocky from the start. They were not provided with Hajj credentials, leaving them confined to a hotel for days, and the company lacked sufficient transportation. The couple had paid the company $11,500 per person for an all-inclusive hotel, flight and transportation package.

“I think it was a totality of the circumstances,” Saida Wurie said. “The fact that they didn’t have the proper credentials, the proper transportation, they had to walk so long.”

She said that she wants to make sure the tourism company is not able to do that to anyone else: “Our family has to grieve in this way. In our religion, they do believe that if you die in the Holy Land, it’s a beautiful thing, but there are several things that could have been avoided, so I’m just hoping they don’t operate again.”

Ehajj and Umrah Tours, a Silver Spring-based company established in 2022, is not in good standing with the state after failing to file required annual reports to the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation, according to public records.

The tourism company is registered to an address at an apartment complex in Silver Spring. That apartment unit has also been subject to five complaints for failure to pay rent since February 2023, with the latest complaint filed in May.

Mohamed Bah, the registered agent for the tourism company and defendant in the rent cases, is also listed as the registered agent for a second company called Embese for Hajj and Umrah, which was created in 2017 and is also not in good standing. Bah did not immediately respond to inquiries on Monday.

A Facebook page and website for the tourism company have been taken down, but a cached version of the website shows the company offered visa processing services for customers looking to travel to Saudi Arabia, and two travel packages for pilgrimages to religious sites in Mecca and Medina.

A State Department official told The Washington Post: “We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss. Our team in Saudi Arabia is working around-the-clock to respond to U.S. citizen concerns and provide assistance to the families of those who have died.”

The couple were pillars in their Prince George’s County community, remembered for their civic engagement, family values and fight for social equity. To their family, they were the easygoing, cool dad and strong, energetic mother, instilling faith and values in their home.

Saida Wurie said her family communicated with her parents through a group chat, where they sent photos of their smiling faces. Back in the United States, she said, her family was looking up flights for the couple to return home because of the difficulties, but her parents persisted by faith.

“They’re like, ‘No, maybe this is just a struggle that God wants us to go through in order to make it,’” she said. “'Let’s be patient’ is what my father would say.”

The couple left for the pilgrimage on June 5, and the trip was planned to last until June 23, with visits to Jeddah, Mecca and Medina. Saida Wurie said the family received word on June 16 that her parents were possibly missing.

For the next two days, the family contacted the U.S. Consulate General’s Office, were in touch with people on the ground and called local hospitals. The family heard from the U.S. Embassy, which confirmed Alieu Wurie’s and Isatu Wurie’s names and passports were among a list of deceased people, Saida Wurie said. They had died on June 15.

The report says “natural cause of death,” Saida Wurie said, and the family has been advised by officials that this could mean heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Saida Wurie said that on the day her parents died, she had last heard from them that they had been waiting three to four hours for transportation to Mount Arafat, symbolizing the successful completion of the Hajj, and ultimately decided to walk with a group up to the mountain to offer their prayers.

The last text from her mother read: “Sorry my love We have been walking since the last time you called Over 2 hrs!! smh.”

The memory of the spiritually yoked couple and the impact they had for Sierra Leoneans will never be forgotten, friends and politicians told The Washington Post in interviews.

Wala Blegay (D-District 6), one of the three current Prince George’s County Council members who are of African immigrant ancestry, met Wurie as she was trying to connect with the Sierra Leonean community. Wurie acted as a maternal conduit for one of the rising populations in Prince George’s County, guiding Blegay on what to wear at masjid, when to bow and where to be seated among women. Isatu Wurie was always eager to find ways to connect those among the African and Islamic diaspora to matters within the county, Blegay said.

Isatu Wurie and Alieu Wurie both came from well-known families with names attached to great achievements in education and business in Sierra Leone, said Imam Teslim Alghali of Sierra Leone Muslim Jamaat , located in Prince George’s County.

Alghali said that Isatu Wurie believed in diversity and inclusivity and that she was always ready to merge the two, especially if it meant helping her community in Prince George’s County.

The religious leader has fond memories of working with her on coronavirus messaging during the pandemic, where they partnered with the county executive’s office to figure out the best way to reach the immigrant and Muslim community, Alghali said.

The hole that the couple leaves behind will be difficult to fill, but Alghali said it’s some consolation in knowing that they died in service to God despite the sadness many are feeling.

“The most important thing was the intention to say, ‘I want to do this for the sake of Allah because he instructed me to do so,’” he said, adding that there is belief they are both in heaven. “They were together a long time with beautiful children, happy family, but this happened to them. There’s belief that there’s love to eternity. This is a good example. They will continue that to eternity by the will of Allah.”

For as long as Saida Wurie could remember, her parents were involved in civic engagement, attending local campaign meetings and canvassing during elections. The Sierra Leonean couple met through their mothers, who were best friends. Alieu Wurie moved to the United States in the ’80s, and Isatu Wurie joined him after finishing nursing school in London. Both attended universities, and Isatu Wurie retired as a registered nurse and Alieu Wurie owned his own nursing agency. They have three children — Saida, who is 33 and an attorney, and her two older brothers. The couple also had four granddaughters.

Saida Wurie said the family hopes they can retrieve her parents’ belongings, the two fanny packs they left with, and locate their burial site. They had a prayer service at their home in Bowie and will hold a memorial in July.
