Posted: March 24, 2024 | Last updated: March 24, 2024

Taking time to reflect on what you’re grateful for can put your mind in a positive state before bed. Write down three things you’re thankful for every evening. This can shift your focus from worries to positivity.

Make the most of your personalized yoga journey by learning the basic techniques to achieving harmony in body and mind. You will be richly rewarded if you put in the time and effort.

Mindfulness meditation can decrease stress and improve sleep quality. It involves focusing on your breath and being present in the moment. Even a few minutes can make a difference. “Meditation before bed has helped me silence the chatter in my mind,” comments a meditation app user.

Discover Your Space

Find a quiet, comfortable spot to stretch out and move freely. This space should be your sanctuary, where you can leave the world behind and focus on your practice. Ensure it’s well-ventilated and has enough room for your yoga mat and other props. This is the first step in creating a personal yoga journey that feels both intimate and expansive.

Health and wellness have become a priority for companies. They’re offering gym memberships, organizing wellness programs, and providing healthy food options. These initiatives show a commitment to the overall well-being of their employees. A healthy workforce is a productive workforce.

Choose the Right Gear

Investing in a good yoga mat is the foundation of your practice. Look for one with sufficient grip and cushioning to support your body through various poses. Comfortable clothing that allows for a full range of motion is also essential. Remember, the right gear can significantly enhance your yoga experience, making it more enjoyable and effective.

When oversaturated with political noise, finding a balance between staying informed and maintaining sanity is essential. Our creative and effective self-care strategies will help you navigate the stressful whirlwind of politics. Find the perfect blend of staying engaged and keeping your peace of mind.

Start with Breathing Exercises

Begin each session by focusing on your breath. Deep, mindful breathing helps to center your mind and prepare your body for the physical practice. Try different breathing techniques to find what works best for you, and notice how it brings clarity and calmness. This simple step can transform your practice, making each movement more intentional and powerful.

Rediscover the power of your own body with a bodyweight program. These classes focus on exercises that use your body’s weight for resistance, eliminating the need for equipment. You’ll learn to master movements like squats, lunges, and push-ups, all modified to suit your ability level. It’s a simple yet effective way to build strength and confidence.

Warm-Up with Gentle Stretches

Warming up your muscles is crucial to prevent injury and prepare your body for more intense poses. Start with simple stretches that target major muscle groups. Pay attention to how each stretch feels, and don’t rush the process. Warming up is an opportunity to connect with your body and set the tone for your practice.

Sometimes, the best way to recover is to reassess and adjust your training plan. This might mean decreasing the intensity, volume, or frequency of workouts. Consult with a professional to create a balanced plan that allows for growth and recovery.

Learn the Basic Poses

Familiarize yourself with foundational yoga poses, such as mountain pose, downward dog, and child’s pose. These basic poses are the building blocks of any yoga practice. Focus on mastering the form and alignment of each pose, listening to your body, and making adjustments as needed. With time, these poses will become second nature, forming the core of your yoga repertoire.

Progressive muscle relaxation involves tensing and then relaxing each muscle group. This technique can reduce stress and prepare your body for sleep. Practice this method while lying in bed, starting from your toes and moving upwards. “It’s like a signal to my body that it’s time to sleep,” describes a sleep enthusiast on a wellness website.

Focus on Alignment

Proper alignment is key to getting the most out of each pose and avoiding injury. Take the time to learn the correct positioning for your hands, feet, hips, and spine. Use mirrors, if available, to check your form, or consider recording yourself to review your alignment. Remember, in yoga, how you move into and hold a pose is just as important as the pose itself.

Build strength without heavy weights with resistance bands. Using bands offers a safe way to increase muscle tone and endurance. Each session introduces new exercises, ensuring a full-body workout that’s both challenging and accessible. Feel empowered as you notice your strength building week by week.

Embrace Props

Don’t be afraid to use props like blocks, straps, and bolsters. They can help you achieve the correct alignment, deepen your stretches, and make challenging poses more accessible. Props can also be used creatively to explore new variations of familiar poses. See them as tools that enhance your practice, not as crutches.

Engaging in a relaxing activity before bed can help clear your mind. Whether it’s reading, knitting, or listening to soft music, find what soothes you. This transition from wake time to sleep time can be very effective.

Practice Mindfulness

Yoga is as much about the mind as it is about the body. Try to stay present and mindful throughout your practice. Observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment, and bring your focus back to your breath whenever your mind wanders. This mindfulness will deepen your practice and bring peace and clarity.

Wake up with the sun and ease into the day with gentle, flowing stretches. This program emphasizes flexibility and mindfulness, perfect for those over 50 who want to maintain agility. You’ll start with deep breathing to center your thoughts, then progress through stretches that target every major muscle group. By the end of each session, you’ll feel more limber and ready to tackle the day ahead.

Take It Slow

Progress in yoga doesn’t come from rushing through poses or pushing your body too hard. Take your time to fully experience each pose, making small adjustments to deepen the stretch or improve your balance. Remember, yoga is a personal journey, not a race. Respecting your body’s limits is key to a sustainable practice.

In a world where time is a luxury and home gym equipment collects dust, our list of effortless ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine might be just what the doctor ordered. From parking at the back of the parking lot to squat sessions during commercial breaks, pep up your day with input from fitness enthusiasts. Fasten your sneakers, for these clever hacks will have you burning more calories than ever before.

Build Strength Gradually

Strength-building poses like plank, warrior, and chair are important but should be approached with care. Start with shorter holds and fewer repetitions, gradually increasing the intensity as your strength improves. Focus on engaging the correct muscle groups and maintaining proper form to build strength safely and effectively.

Stability is key as you age. Balance and core-focused programs engage in exercises that strengthen your core muscles while improving your balance. Each class introduces new, innovative ways to challenge stability, from yoga poses to light dance moves. Enjoy a sense of achievement as your balance and core strength noticeably improve.

Explore Balance Poses

Balancing poses, such as tree pose and half moon, can be challenging but incredibly rewarding. They require focus, strength, and a calm mind. Start near a wall or chair for support, and don’t be discouraged by wobbles or falls. Over time, you’ll find your balance and confidence improving.

Implementing regular massage or stretching sessions can greatly aid in recovery. These practices help to relieve muscle tightness and improve flexibility, leading to better overall recovery. Regular stretching can drastically reduce recovery time.

Incorporate Flow Sequences

Flow sequences, like sun salutations, add dynamic movement to your practice. They help build heat in the body, improve flexibility, and enhance cardiovascular health. Start slowly, focusing on the transition between poses, and gradually increase your pace as you become more comfortable. Flow sequences can be both meditative and invigorating, adding a new dimension to your practice.

Stress and worry can take a toll on your sleep. Practices such as meditation, deep breathing, or writing in a journal can help manage stress levels. Create a pre-sleep ritual that includes these relaxing activities.

Cool Down Properly

Ending your session with a proper cool-down is as important as the warm-up. Gentle stretches and restorative poses allow your body to relax and recover. Savasana, or corpse pose, is a traditional way to end a yoga practice, providing deep relaxation for both body and mind. Take this time to reflect on your practice and your progress.

Every time you go to refill your water bottle, take the longest route possible. This encourages you to drink more water while also increasing your step count. It’s a win-win for hydration and movement. You’ll be surprised how much extra walking you can fit into your day.

Stay Hydrated

Keeping your body hydrated is essential, especially as you engage in more physical activity. Drink water before, during, and after your practice to help your muscles recover and replenish any fluids lost through sweat. Listen to your body’s signals, and don’t underestimate the importance of hydration for your overall well-being.

A gentle yoga routine before bed can release physical tension and calm the mind. Focus on slow, stretching movements and mindful breathing. This practice can be a peaceful transition to sleep. “Bedtime yoga has been my nightly ritual for better sleep,” mentions a yogi on a fitness forum.

Set Realistic Goals

Setting goals can be motivating, but keeping them achievable is important. Whether it’s mastering a specific pose, increasing your flexibility, or simply committing to a regular practice, make sure your goals are realistic and tailored to your personal journey. Celebrate each achievement, no matter how small, and use setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow.

Community-driven initiatives are reshaping the beauty landscape. Young adults are collaborating in local and online communities to share tips, support, and inspiration. These initiatives are about building connections and learning from each other. It’s a collective approach to redefining beauty standards.

Join a Community

Practicing yoga with others can be incredibly rewarding. Look for local classes or online communities where you can share experiences, ask questions, and find support. Being part of a yoga community can provide a sense of belonging and motivation, helping you to stay committed to your practice.

Chair yoga offers the benefits of yoga with the support of a chair. This program is perfect for those who need a gentler approach to flexibility and strength exercises. Engage in a variety of seated and standing poses that improve circulation, flexibility, and balance. Enjoy yoga’s benefits without the strain of getting down to the floor.

Listen to Your Body

One of the most important aspects of yoga is learning to listen to your body. Adjust your position or try a different pose if a pose feels painful or uncomfortable. Recognizing the difference between a good stretch and pain is crucial to practicing yoga safely and effectively.

Use the power of visualization. Imagine yourself overcoming your failures and achieving your goals. Visualization helps create a clear and compelling image of success, making it more tangible and attainable.

Experiment with Different Styles

Yoga comes in many styles, from the gentle flows of Hatha to the intense heat of Bikram. Experimenting with different styles can help you find the one that best suits your needs and preferences. Each style offers unique benefits and challenges, making your yoga journey diverse and exciting.

Specialize in a specific area, like fitness, finance, or health. A niche focus can help you stand out and attract a dedicated audience. It positions you as an expert in a specific field rather than a generalist.

Incorporate Meditation and Relaxation Techniques

Yoga is about calming the mind and finding inner peace. Incorporate meditation and relaxation techniques into your practice, such as guided imagery or deep relaxation exercises. These practices can enhance the benefits of yoga, reducing stress and improving mental clarity.

Social media can amplify conflicts. Choose face-to-face or direct conversations for sensitive topics. Online discussions often lack tone and context, leading to misunderstandings. “Direct conversations have more empathy than online debates,” says a commenter.

Seek Guidance When Needed

If you’re unsure about a pose or aspect of your practice, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from a qualified yoga instructor. They can provide personalized advice and adjustments to help you improve. Remember, there’s no shame in asking for help; it’s a sign of commitment to your practice and personal growth.

Set daily or weekly challenges with your fitness tracker. Aim to beat your step count, climb stairs, or spend more active minutes during the day. Competing against yourself can be a powerful motivator. As one fitness enthusiast advises online, “Seeing the numbers go up is incredibly satisfying and keeps me moving!”

Reflect on Your Journey

Take time regularly to reflect on your yoga journey. Acknowledge the progress you’ve made, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the lessons you’ve learned. This reflection can be a powerful source of motivation and a reminder of how far you’ve come.

Is Short-Term Ozempic Use Ever Okay?

GLP-1 medications are receiving attention for their role in facilitating rapid weight loss. Does that mean they can be used as a short-term solution to jump-start a diet?

Paige Jarvie Brettingen

GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have been proven to help many people who have struggled with weight loss finally reach their goal weight. But do you have to stay on these medications forever to maintain results or is short-term use effective — and safe?

Here’s how these weight loss drugs work , how long they’re typically taken, and whether medical experts recommend using GLP-1 drugs for a brief time period, such as a month or two, to kick-start a diet if you don’t have a lot of weight to lose.

Is Short-Term Ozempic Use Possible?

It’s possible, yes, but it’s not advisable. These medications are not intended to be a quick fix, nor are they for people wanting to lose a minor amount of weight. For example, Wegovy and Zepbound have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for individuals with obesity (having a BMI of 30 or higher) or for those with a BMI of 27 or higher and who also have a weight-related condition, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

“Thinking of treating obesity as a short-term problem is not consistent with the modern philosophy that considers obesity to be a chronic disease,” says Laura Davisson, MD, a professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine and director of the Medical Weight Management Clinic at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. “This is the same as with other chronic diseases. If you have high blood pressure, your blood pressure is lower when you take your medications and is higher when you do not take your medications. If you have high cholesterol, your cholesterol is better when you take your medications and increases if you stop the medicines.”

“The struggle with weight is rooted in biology and genetics , not just willpower alone, so GLP-1 agonist medications are a powerful tool in our toolbox,” says Caissa Troutman, MD, the physician founder of WEIGHT reMDy in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, who specializes in weight, sleep, and menopause.

How Does a GLP-1 Medication Work?

Although these weight loss medications are often all referred to as GLP-1 drugs, there are differences. Ozempic and Wegovy are two well-known brand names for semaglutide, also known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, while Mounjaro and Zepbound are examples of tirzepatide, which is a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist. These different GLP-1 drugs serve different purposes, depending on what they have been approved for by the FDA. Ozempic, for example, is intended for people with type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is for people with obesity without type 2 diabetes.

However, there are some broad similarities in how all of these GLP-1 drugs facilitate weight loss. They do so through targeting our brain and our gastrointestinal tract.

“Obesity is a chronic disease in which the body’s physiologic drivers are encouraging someone to eat when it won’t benefit their health. The body does this because it is designed to try to prevent starvation. The medications work by targeting those physiologic signals,” says Dr. Davisson.

A GLP-1 drug impacts neural pathways in the brain that control appetite. This is accomplished by turning off the part of the brain that makes us hungry (the NPY AgRP neuron pathway) and stimulating neurons responsible for lowering hunger, says Dr. Troutman.

The second area that the medication impacts is the gastrointestinal tract. It slows down stomach emptying, allowing satiety to last for a longer period of time and discouraging post-meal hunger. Troutman notes that some patients will notice they are full after eating only half to three-quarters of what they used to eat once they begin taking a GLP-1 medication.

Can You Take a GLP-1 to Jump-Start Your Weight Loss?

You could, but the pounds you lost would likely come back if you stopped taking the medication. So if your doctor suggests Ozempic or Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and weight loss, or Wegovy or Zepbound for obesity, these will likely be part of long-term solutions, along with a nutritious diet and exercise .

Research on how long to take a GLP-1 drug for weight loss is still ongoing, but one study of 327 participants, who had lost an average of 17.3 percent body weight on a semaglutide after 15 months, were asked to stop their medication. One year later, the participants had regained two-thirds of the weight they had lost while on the medication.

Are There Any Weight Loss Drugs Intended for Short-Term Use?

Although research is ongoing, there’s currently no scientific evidence suggesting any weight loss drug is appropriate to take short term. These drugs are part of a long-term approach to treating health issues, including obesity. Taking your prescribed medication, along with making other diet and lifestyle adjustments as advised by your healthcare provider, will set you up for success.

“These medications work best when you combine them with a healthy diet and exercise plan,” says Kevin Huffman, DO , a board-certified bariatric physician and CEO and founder of AmBari Nutrition based in Elyria, Ohio. “[They are] neither miracle weight-loss pills nor life-changing interventions. They augment healthy lifestyle changes.”

Is a GLP-1 Drug Right for You?

If you’re thinking about a GLP-1, but aren’t sure about long-term medication or have any questions or concerns, speak with your doctor , who can make an assessment based on your health history.

Patients with diabetes or insulin resistance conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or pre-diabetes are often good candidates for semaglutide because it improves insulin resistance, says Troutman. Semaglutide would also benefit someone who has the medical condition of obesity — having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Wegovy has also been approved by the FDA to “reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, and stroke in adults with cardiovascular disease and either obesity or overweight.”

GLP-1 drugs may not be right for you if you have a family history of medullary thyroid cancer, multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2) — a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors in various endocrine glands — or a personal history of pancreatitis, says Troutman.

The Wrap-Up

If your doctor has determined that a GLP-1 drug for weight loss would be a good fit for you, it will likely be just one component of a long-term weight loss plan. At this point, experts believe that taking these drugs for a lifetime is the best way to maintain weight loss.

Having a physician who can offer support, guidance, and encouragement during your weight loss journey will be vital to your continued success, Troutman says. Talk with your doctor about which medication would be a good fit for you, as well as the lifestyle changes that are needed to complement your GLP-1 medication. Other important aspects for successful weight loss are a sustainable nutrition plan, a movement plan that you love, getting an appropriate amount of sleep, learning stress resilience, and surrounding yourself with a supportive community.

Experience Japanese culinary tradition at Lucky Mizu, a restaurant that feels like dining in a music box. Beneath a 40-foot Earth Harp that envelops the space in sound, guests will indulge in a selection of sushi and sashimi and explore the art of cooking with water - featuring shabu-shabu (boil) and seiro-mushi (steam), featuring the world’s finest meats, seafood, and fresh produce, all beautifully presented. A meal at Lucky Mizu starts with an array of “zensai” snacks and raw dishes, followed by sushi and the diner’s choice of a seiro mushi or shabu shabu set entrée, featuring Japanese A5 wagyu, Kurobuta pork, seasonal seafood, or organic farmers market vegetables. The ethereal space is lined with cherry blossoms, good luck charms, and butterfly infinity mirrors. When performers play the Earth Harp and drums at the center of the room, the entire restaurant turns into an enormous, immersive musical instrument. …

Great service and ambiance! 10/10 I would recommend! Nicole was such a vibe and extended excellent customer service!!!

Nicole was the best hostess! She was so nice and greeted us with kindness. She made us feel very welcomed and best host ever!

Photo of Hailey O.

Had the BEST girls night experience here last night! We started the night off having a drink at the carousel bar while we waited for our reservation. We walked over to the host stand at Lucky Mizu where she then walked us over to this speakeasy-esque bar that had a hidden door that opened up to a secret passage way that lead us to our table in the restaurant! SO COOL! The ambiance was impeccable, it felt like we were in a luxurious restaurant in the middle of Tokyo! The service was 10/10 and our waitress Aliyah was an absolute sweetheart. The food was so delicious - we ordered shabu shabu to share for the 5 of us, as well as a handful of specialty rolls. The stars of the night were the spicy yellowtail and truffle rolls!! UGH, sgood! I'll definitely be coming back here again, the service and food were just THAT good! Thank you so much to the Lucky Mizu staff

Lucky Mizu aesthetically is such a vibe. A small funky restaurant at the Moxie that transports you to a trendy mini Supperclub somewhere in Tokyo. A reservation is a must, otherwise you will be left in the dust. We arrived within our 15 minute grace period and were seated five minutes later. Unfortunately the party after us missed their grace period window, and their table was given away. Because there is not a lot of seating at this restaurant, if you do not have a reservation, there's a chance you will have to wait quite a while. With only a few booths for dining, my husband and I were placed at the bar. I didn't mind, because I knew the restaurant was sort of a laid-back vibe anyway. There was a DJ, lots of staff, and a gorgeous harp near the ceiling, but unfortunately no harp player during our 10:15pm to 11:30pm visit (Tokyo Nights). Friendly staff and the food arrived quickly. But unfortunately the food itself was not good. Everything was just ok. Everything was not only lacking in flavor but lacking in quality! And for the prices..that's not cool. Here's what we had: Truffle Edamame- 3/10 (bland) Hamachi Shots- 5/10 (tasty but please remove whatever gelatin you're putting at the bottom of the shot glass. The texture is off putting) Baked Crab Handroll- 4/10 (bland) Scallop & Cucumber Handroll- 3/10 A5 Kobe Beef Handroll- 5/10 Seared Albacore & Fried Onion Handroll- 4/10 Toro & Caviar Sashimi- 2/10 (horrible quality fish and super cheap caviar) Kyuri Cocktail- 8/10 (tasty but will not give you even the teeniesf buzz) Lychee Martini- 2/10 (horrible! And they used Smirnoff! I was horrified. Why is that cheap liquor even at the establishment??) *you're paying for the ambiance. Not for Sushi. And unfortunately not even for good drinks.

The worst experience i had at this restaurant. The hosts made us wait 1 hour to be seated at the bar side when it was open at the time we have arrived .. then what was the reason for the 1 hour wait. They called their manager nothing changed i strongly to recommend this place to anyone..

I'm truly sorry to hear about your experience. Waiting for an hour to be seated, especially when the restaurant wasn't at capacity, is definitely frustrating. It sounds like there was some miscommunication or an oversight on our part, and for that, I apologize. We strive to provide prompt and courteous service to all our guests, and it's disheartening to hear that we fell short in your case. Your feedback is valuable to us, and we'll take it onboard to ensure that we improve our service. If you ever decide to give us another chance, please reach out, and we'll do our best to make it right.

I go here with my sister! It's located in Level 8. Modern sushi, shabu-shabu and live DJ. The harp design of the ceiling and decor encompasses an etherial ambience. The lemon yuzu saki is the best! The venue also has a nightclub with dancing, DJs, acrobats and live music bringing innovation to an LA night out. Smart casual dress code.

Interesting place with great entertainment. Located on level 8, Lucky Mizu is one of the several restaurants aimed to provide an interesting experience for the night. Food was ok, definitely can't beat the authentic Shabu places. The tomyum soup base is really good and the ginger dipping sauce is good as well. Make sure to check out the other bars on this floor while you are here

Shabu shabu

Shabu shabu

This was the most expensive shabu shabu dining experience I have ever had. It also was definitely not the easiest to locate either. Once we found the elevator that takes you to the Level 8 floor, we had to ask around to find where to check in for the restaurant as the floor has other restaurants and bars. I opted for the 4 ounces of kurobuta pork shabu shabu with the bone broth as the base. The food came out very nicely presented. I have to give kudos for the presentation. I had to ask the server for the status of our food a few times though to get all components of the shabu shabu. I am not pleased with that because for such an establishment and price point, service should be on point. The food itself was good, but it was not good enough to justify its price point. Also, as much as I love the broth, it was so concentrated that it was salty. I had to mix some of kombu broth into my bone broth and drink a lot of glasses of water. The ambiance was the best part of my dining experience. I love the lucky cats lining the wall and the harp performance. It was definitely unique.

Bring on Slovakia! But who else could England face in the Euro 2024 knockout rounds?

England must go on a run of wins in the knockout stages of the tournament if they are to reach the final on 14 July.

Wednesday 26 June 2024 22:59, UK

Pic: Reuters

England will play Slovakia in the first knockout round of Euro 2024.

The sides will face off in the last-16 clash on Sunday at 5pm (UK time).

It comes after the Three Lions qualified top of their group following a 0-0 draw against Slovenia on Tuesday.

If the team can overcome their counterparts from the central European nation, they will be just two wins from reaching the final in Berlin.

Until Wednesday evening, there had been uncertainty over who England's next opponents would be.

However, the date with Slovakia was confirmed following Georgia's shock win over Portugal in their final group game.

The Three Lions avoided a tougher opposition in the Netherlands after the Dutch slumped to a shock third place finish in their group, following a defeat at the hands of Ralf Rangnick's revitalised Austria.

It puts England in a seemingly good position on the supposedly "easier" side of the knockout draw, as they will avoid the likes of France, Portugal, Spain and Germany on their way to the final - if they can make it there.

Who could England play in the quarter-finals?

If England win their last-16 tie, they will then face the winners of Saturday's knockout clash between Switzerland and Italy in Dusseldorf.

The quarter-final match will be played on Saturday 6 July at 5pm (UK time).

What about the semi-finals?

Assuming England win their last-16 and quarter-final matches, the national side will face either Romania, the Netherlands, Austria or Turkey on Wednesday 10 July at 8pm (UK time).

And the final?

France or Germany are among the favourites to make it to the final on Sunday July 14 - although Spain and Portugal are also considered strong contenders.

However, there have already been so many twists in the tournament that an outsider - such as (so far) undefeated Slovenia - cannot be completely ruled out.

But some critics of England's players and manager will not be expecting the side to make it that far.
