Jessie diggins claims tour de ski; sophia laukli wins first world cup.

  • OlympicTalk ,
  • OlympicTalk

Jessie Diggins won a second Tour de Ski title and may be en route to the most successful World Cup season in U.S. cross-country skiing history.

Diggins, an Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalist, won the Tour de Ski, a Tour de France-like stage competition, by 31.6 seconds combining results from seven days of racing different events.

She powered through the final two stages on Saturday and Sunday after being injured in a crash on Thursday before a rest day.

Fellow American Sophia Laukli won Sunday’s finale, including a 2.2-mile climb up Alpe Cermis in Italy with an average gradient of 11.6 percent. It was Laukli’s first World Cup victory. At 23, she became the youngest U.S. cross-country skier to win a World Cup.

Laukli is a Maine native who is a dual citizen of Norway, where her father is from.

Diggins began the day with a 43-second lead in the Tour standings, greater than the margin separating second place from sixth place. She finished sixth in Sunday’s stage to comfortably win the overall title.

In 2021, Diggins became the first skier outside Europe to win a Tour, which at the time was the biggest individual title of her career. She since won her first two individual Olympic medals (silver and bronze) and last February became the first American to win an individual world title in the sport.

This season, she has three individual World Cup race wins and eight podiums at the midpoint.

By wins and podiums, Kikkan Randall owned the best season by a U.S. cross-country skier before this year — five individual race wins and nine podiums in 2012-13.

Diggins also leads the standings for the World Cup overall title, crowning the world’s best all-around cross-country skier, by 308 points. In 2021, when Diggins became the first American woman to win the overall, her final margin was 268 points.

The Tour de Ski is arguably the crown jewel of this season because there are no Olympics or world championships.

But Diggins has another carrot ahead -- a World Cup stop in her home state of Minnesota from Feb. 17-18. It’s the first cross-country World Cup to be held in the U.S. since 2001.

Cross-country Tour de Ski 2023/24: preview, full schedule, how to watch live

Norway's Johannes Klæbo is defending his Tour de Ski crown in the cross-country skiing event, with Jessie Diggins of USA going in as the favourite to land the women's title she last won in 2021.

Johannes Klaebo of Norway competes at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Planica, Slovenia.

The 2023/24 Tour de Ski in cross-country skiing gets underway with a sprint race in Toblach, Italy on Saturday, 30 December.

Can anyone stop reigning men's champion Johannes Klæbo from securing a third-consecutive crown?

Frida Karlsson is the reigning champion on the women's side, but the question is whether she will even start to defend her title. The star has struggled to find her best form since contracting COVID after the cross-country skiing opening event in Ruka, and 2021 champion Jessie Diggins is currently leading the overall season rankings.

The Tour de Ski, which is part of the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, will see skiers compete in seven stages, moving from Toblach to Davos, Switzerland, before the finale on the famously steep and gruelling mass start in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

Read on to find out all you need to know about the 2023/24 edition of the event, including the full schedule and top skiers to watch.

2023/24 Tour de Ski: Stars to watch

On the men’s side, Johannes Klæbo is the Tour de Ski favourite. He picked up where he left off last season and currently leads the World Cup overall rankings.

In fact, the reigning Olympic champion from Norway has won four races this year, which is 50 per cent of the season so far.

His compatriot, Harald Oestberg Amundsen is also having a good season and currently sits second in the overall standings after dominating the distance events.

Elsewhere, keep an eye out for another Norwegian, Paal Golberg , who won the 10km freestyle in Ostersund and is expected to be a medal threat.

On the women’s side, USA’s Jessie Diggins has taken full advantage of Frida Karlsson ’s fitness struggles to take the lead in this year’s overall rankings.

As a previous Tour de Ski winner, Diggins goes into the event as the favourite. However, she’ll have to be at her best to beat Sweden’s Ebba Andersson , who has won multiple times this season and currently edges Diggins in the distance events, as well as Emma Ribom , who currently tops the sprint charts.

Tour de Ski Season 2023/2024

Basic rules

Athletes must be registered for the entire Tour de Ski. It is not possible to do only certain stages.

Anyone who misses a stage or is disqualified must leave the Tour and automatically be removed from the start list for the next race.

Time limits

Athletes will be excluded from the competition if they are more than 18 percent (women) or 15 percent (men) behind the winner in distance races (5km or longer).

In sprint prologues, the cutoff is 23 percent (women) or 20 percent (men) behind the best time in the prologue.

On the final stage up the monster hill Alpe Cermis, 30 percent behind applies for both women and men.

In special cases, the jury may decide on other percentage rules.

The overall standings

The overall standings of the Tour de Ski will be calculated by accumulating:

  • The results (actual times) where tenths of seconds are truncated from each stage prior to the last stage. The results of the qualification round will be used for sprint competitions.
  • The results (actual times) with the tenths of seconds from the last stage.
  • Bonus seconds and time penalties from each stage.

Tiebreakers

Suppose athletes have equal time until the start of the last stage. In that case, the following criteria apply in order of priority: Number of individual wins, best results (most second places, third places, etc.), distance points, draw.

If athletes have the same time after the last stage, only one thing applies: the order of finishing the last stage. If the athletes are still tied, they will share first place (this has never happened).

Bonus seconds

Bonus seconds are awarded in sprints and mass start competitions. These are deducted from the athlete’s time and thus affect the overall standings.

In sprinting, bonus seconds are deducted from the prologue time, as this is used for the overall classification. However, the bonus seconds are calculated from the final results.

Bonus sprint: 1° 60″; 2° 54″; 3° 48″, 4° 46″; 5° 44″; 6° 42″; 7° 32″; 8° 30″; 9° 28″; 10° 26″; 11° 24″; 12° 22″; 13°-15° 10″; 16°-20° 8″; 21°-25° 6″; 26°-30° 4″.

For the 15km mass start in Val di Fiemme, which is the penultimate stage of the Tour de Ski, bonus seconds will also be awarded at the sprint awards to the first ten athletes, 15 seconds, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 second respectively.

If one of the athletes who has taken bonus seconds during the stage does not finish the stage, these bonus seconds will not be awarded to anyone else. If an athlete is disqualified, the seconds will be redistributed.

Tour de Ski points calculation

This is a separate ranking based on points awarded during individual stages, according to the form below. Athletes who do not complete the Tour are not included in the ranking. If athletes are tied, the number of wins and best results will be used to determine a winner.

As with bonus seconds, if athletes who have scored points along the way abandon the stage, these points will not be awarded to anyone else. If an athlete is disqualified, the points will be redistributed.

This is where points are awarded:

  • Sprint Toblach:  After final result list (Top-10: 30, 24, 20, 16, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2 points).
  • Interval start Toblach:  First intermediate time (Top-10: 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point).
  • Pursuit start Toblach:  First intermediate time (Top-10: 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point).
  • Sprint Davos:  After final result list (Top-10: 30, 24, 20, 16, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2 points).
  • Pursuit start Davos:  First intermediate time (Top-10: 15, 12, 10, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point).
  • Mass start Val di Fiemme:  Intermediate sprint (Top-10: 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point).
  • Final Climb Val di Fiemme:  At the sprint at the stadium + the sprint at the bottom of the monster hill: (Top-10: 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point).

Tour de Ski team competition

The best two women and best two men from each nation from each stage will count for the Team Cup. All times (actual times where tenths of seconds are truncated) will be added.

Points in the World Cup overall

After the last race in the Tour de Ski, points for the Tour de Ski overall are awarded to the top 50 according to the following scheme:

Amundsen and Niskanen triumph at Tour de Ski in Davos

Two Niskanens take the victories of Tour de Ski stage

The changing weather in the Swiss Alps added some challenges for todays second race day of the COOP FIS Tour de Ski performance by Le Gruyère. An individual start of 10km and 15km in Classic technique was on schedule. Cross-Country World Cup history was made by Kerttu and Iivo Niskanen as the siblings bring home the victory of their race each.

Kerttu Niskanen takes the leader bib of Tour de Ski

Seven years after her first World Cup victory and two years after her last victory, Kerttu Niskanen reports back to the top of the podium. The 33 year-old Finn takes her third career World Cup win at todays 10km C race at Lenzerheide with a margin of 18 seconds. With a remarkable final push, Niskanen made the most of the conditions. With her strong performance, Kerttu takes over the Tour de Ski lead and states: “This is the first time in my career that I have the yellow bib and I am the leader and I am happy that this year the Tour is not so long.”

Ebba Andersson , who headed into the race 10 minutes before the start of Niskanen, had to fight hard through the strong snow fall. “It was snowing a lot but I tried to stay focused and had in mind that it was the same conditions for everyone and all were struggling out there and that motivated me to keep going. I had Frida 30 seconds behind me chasing but I could keep the focus on my skiing and to give it all until the finish line,” concluded Ebba her race.

With a clear margin, the 24 year-old Swede had taken the seat in the leaders chair and her result remained untouched until Kerttu Niskanen crossed the finish line.

Natalia Nepryaeva from Russia had chosen a later start position and chased the best times from behind. Neither the time of Niskanen nor Andersson could be challenged but by 3.5 seconds, Nepryaeva managed to squeeze onto the podium before Krista Pärmäkoski.

Iivo Niskanen already watched the winning run of his sister during his warm-up session. “I got a little nervous when I saw Kerttu winning the women’s race but I kept the focus on my own task,” stated the Finn after crossing the finish line.

Indeed, today’s 15km needed a lot of attention and endurance as conditions made the course profile even more difficult. With a clean run, Iivo claimed the victory with a 19.3 second margin.

The run for the victory was not in reach anymore but Alexander Bolshunov fought for the best possible result. After a slight backfall in the first round, he could not catch up with the times paced by Niskanen and had to keep the fight on for the second place.

With Paal Golberg, the Men’s podium get’s completed. “It was just the result that I needed. 6 out of the 8 spots of the Olympics are already taken. This day was maybe the most important, so I am very happy with the result,” said Paal after the race. The 31 year-old Norwegian took the place off Johannes Høslot Klæbo who finishes 9.1 seconds off the podium. Nevertheless, with a strong performance, Klæbo keeps the Tour lead as well as the Tour de Ski Point standing lead.

For sprint teller prologtida.  2. Tidsresultat inkludert tideler fra siste etappe opp monsterbakke Alpe Cermis. 3.

Saken fortsetter under

How Ben Ogden Scored the Best-Ever Finish In The Tour De Ski

by  Peggy Shinn

premier i tour de ski

Ben Ogden competes in the men's cross-country skiing 15-km classic during the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 on Feb. 11, 2022 in Zhangjiakou, China.

On a warm, wet January weekend in northern New Hampshire, Ben Ogden was cross-country ski racing through heavy, wet snow at the Bates Carnival, the first collegiate race of the NCAA DI eastern circuit.

With Ogden in the field, every other guy racing that weekend was racing for second place. Why? Because Ogden — a graduate student at the University of Vermont using his final year of NCAA eligibility — is a 2022 Olympian, reigning NCAA champion, and the best-ever finisher for the U.S. man at the seven-stage Tour de Ski.

“I always love racing the carnivals,” he told a reporter after the first collegiate race (referred to as “carnivals” on the NCAA Division 1 eastern circuit).

Ogden has balanced college and international ski racing for his entire tenure at UVM. And since his FIS World Cup debut in March 2019, he has had a meteoric rise in international standings. This year, the 22-year-old is ranked seventh the world in sprint standings and ninth overall—and at the 2022/2023 Tour de Ski earlier this month, he scored the best result in men’s distance skiing in four decades.

And the team aspect both on the U.S. team and in college skiing is one of the reasons behind his rise.

“For an individual sport, the team aspect of what we do is huge, be it the World Cup or college team or club team or whatever,” he said by phone on his way to New Hampshire. “The people around you are sort of who dictates your potential to some extent.”

Here’s a look at Ogden’s career and what has helped fuel his rapid rise.

Vermont roots

Ogden grew up in the mountain hamlet of Landgrove, Vermont, with older sister Katharine and younger sister Charlotte. Their father, John, skied for Middlebury College and coached the local Bill Koch League—a thriving program in that part of Vermont (thanks in part to the fact that Bill Koch himself lives nearby). Ogden attended high school at the local Stratton Mountain School. Along with a top-notch education, the school boasts a renowned Nordic program.

Ogden became one of the U.S.’s top junior cross-country ski racers and before graduating from SMS, won a world championship silver medal as part of the U.S. men’s 4x5km relay team. Over the next two years (2019 and 2020), the U.S. men then won the world championship relay, giving Ogden two gold medals.

After SMS, he went to UVM to study mechanical engineering and ski for the top ranked UVM ski team. He liked the balance of studying and training. So, after graduating from UVM in May 2022, Ogden decided to pursue a master’s degree (he had one year of NCAA eligibility left because of Covid-19 race cancellations in 2021). His master's project is on the thermal management of electric vehicle battery packs.

Ben Ogden competes in the men's cross-country sprint free qualification during the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 on Feb. 08, 2022 in Zhangjiakou, China.

He hopes to defend his two NCAA titles (in freestyle and classic) in March. But most importantly, he wants to help the Catamounts win the 2023 NCAA team title.

“A lot of people talk about the individual [NCAA] titles,” said Ogden. “But this year my goal is team scoring. That's the last thing that I really, desperately want out of my college career, and this is my last chance.”

World Cup & Olympic Racing

Ogden made his world cup debut in Quebec City in March 2019, finishing far down in results. He was a freshman at UVM at the time, and he was not alone as the new guy on the world cup start list. Gus Schumacher , who was on the medal-winning relay teams with Ogden at world juniors, also made his world cup debut in Quebec.

Rather than be demoralized by the experience, Ogden and Schumacher used it as a learning opportunity. They looked at their strengths and weaknesses and figured out how to improve. Less than two years later, Ogden scored his first world cup points, finishing 13th in the 2020/2021 world cup season opening sprint.

“A huge, huge part of why I was able to move up quickly was that I was not on my own,” explained Ogden. “I think if I was solo out there, I probably would have said there's no hope for me in this world.”

Ogden made his Olympic debut in Beijing last winter. He made it as far as the semifinals in the men’s sprint, ending up in 12th place. It was the second-best finish for an American man at the Olympic Games since Bill Koch won a silver medal at the 1976 Innsbruck Games.

A few days later, Ogden and JC Schoonmaker (another friend from the NCAA circuit) made the finals of the team sprint and finished ninth.

“Our goal of getting to the final was met,” he said. “But realistically, we want to be much better than that, and that race was just one step along the way.”

Tour de Ski

The next step was the 2022/2023 Tour de Ski, held the first week in January.

Although Ogden had qualified for the sprint heats in several world cups and in the 2021 world championships, he wanted to show that his Olympic result was not a fluke. Cross-country sprinting is chaotic, with crashes and ski poles breaking . And sometimes, the strongest skier does not win. In the 2022 Olympic sprint, Ogden felt, in a way, that he had simply been in the right place at the right time to advance to the semifinals.

This past summer, he upped his threshold training, doing an hour of intervals instead of 30 or 40 minutes. He also worked on his technique, and he started the 2022/2023 season hoping to perform well in distance races as well as sprints. In the past, his technique tended to fall apart as he fatigued.

In the opening world cup in November this year, he scored his first world cup points in a distance race (10k classic). He backed that result up with two more top 30s in distance races. And in two world cup sprints in December, he finished seventh (his best world cup sprint finishes to date).

“There's something really nice about just going out and crushing a distance race and just like leaving it all out,” he said. “There are no tags (like in team sprints and relays), there are less tactics and more just what you got.”

By the time the Tour de Ski started on New Year’s Eve, Ogden was flying. He made the semifinal in the first of the Tour’s seven races (a freestyle sprint). But his best race was the 10k classic race in Oberstdorf, Germany, where he finished sixth—the best finish for the U.S. men in distance skiing since in 40 years.

Despite a few mishaps—like two broken poles, one stepped on by five-time Olympic gold medalist Johannes Klaebo, who won the Tour de Ski—Ogden ended the Tour ranked 13th, the best finish ever for an American man.

“I'm really proud of this Tour effort because you can't be in the right place at the right time seven races in a row, it just doesn't happen, and I had all manner of mishaps and made it work and kept fighting,” said Ogden.

Several teammates—Schoonmaker, Schumacher, Scott Patterson , and Hunter Wonders—all scored top 15 finishes in the Tour’s stages as well. Schoonmaker was seventh in the second sprint, Wonders was 11th and Schumacher 15th in the 10k classic, Patterson finished 14th in the final 10k freestyle race.

“When the esprit de corps gets to the place where we have it, you just step back and don't get in the way of it,” commented U.S. head coach Matt Whitcomb of the teamwork among the men.

“These results are so satisfying because it's a product of their work together. It won't be long before some of these guys are stepping up on that podium.”

It was a day of guts and glory for Alaska skiers on global and national stages Sunday.

The guts: Rosie Brennan, Scott Patterson and Zanden McMullen completed the most brutal race in the most brutal of cross-country ski series, surviving the climb up an alpine ski slope in the final competition of the Tour de Ski in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

The glory: Luke Jager captured victory in the men’s classic sprint race in a Super Tour event that marked the end of a week’s worth of action at Utah’s Soldier Hollow. Prior to Sunday, skiers vied for national championships in three races.

Jager was among three Alaskans who claimed medals in U.S. championship races. He took gold and David Norris won bronze in the men’s 10-kilometer classic race on Tuesday, and Kendall Kramer earned silver in the women’s 20-kilometer freestyle race on Friday.

In Italy, Brennan, Patterson and McMullen — all members of Alaska Pacific University’s ski club — were among 53 men and 30 women still standing at the end of the Tour de Ski, an arduous challenge with seven races in nine days that takes skiers from Italy to Switzerland to Italy again.

The series started with 169 of the world’s best skiers – 99 men and 70 women – but daily withdrawals winnowed the field.

The big news of the day was Sophia Laukli’s win in the Tour’s most famous race, a 10-kilometer freestyle that ends with a steep climb up the Alpe Cermis alpine ski slope. The race gains 1,400 feet in the final four kilometers.

Laukli, a 23-year-old from Maine, is a dual-sport athlete whose trail-running resume includes triumphs in Alaska’s Bird Ridge hillclimb and the Alyeska Cirque race.

She placed third in the Alpe Cermis race last year, and she demonstrated her comfort on mountains Sunday by winning in 38 minutes, 16.9 seconds for a 17-second margin of victory.

Minnesota’s Jessie Diggins placed sixth to secure the overall Tour title of her career. Diggins, 32, built a big lead in the Tour standings by winning one race and finishing third in three others.

Brennan placed 12th in Sunday’s race and 12th overall. Her best results were second place in the 20K classic pursuit race in Davos, Switzerland, and fourth place in the 10K classic race in Toblach, Italy.

In the men’s race up Alpe Cermis, McMullen placed 36th and Patterson 42nd. They were both more than three minutes off the winning pace of 33:00.7 set by France’s Jules LaPierre.

McMullen and Patterson were the only two American men to complete the Tour. Patterson finished 26th in the overall standings and McMullen was 36th.

The top result by an Alaska man came from Gus Schumacher of APU, who posted a career-best fourth-place finish in the classic sprint in Toblach — the fourth race of the series. He dropped out the next day because of illness.

At Soldier Hollow, the next tier of U.S. skiers competed throughout the week for national championships in three events and for Super Tour points in Sunday’s classic sprint.

premier i tour de ski

Sunday belonged to Jager, who started the season in Europe on the World Cup tour with the U.S. Ski Team. He crushed Sunday’s qualifying with the fastest time by 5.81 seconds — a huge margin in a sprint race.

He went on to win the finals by more than four seconds.

Jager was joined in the six-man finals by APU teammate Michael Earnhart, who grabbed the bronze medal, and UAA’s Peter Hinds, who placed sixth. In all,14 Alaskans advanced to senior-division quarterfinals.

For Earnhart, 21, third place was a nice consolation prize after coming close to the podium in two national championship races. He finished fourth in the freestyle sprint and was the fourth American, and fifth overall, in the 20K free.

On Friday, 21-year-old Kendall Kramer of Fairbanks collected the first U.S. championship medal of her career by grabbing second place in the 10K freestyle. Skiing for UAF, Kramer finished 6.3 seconds behind winner Haley Brewster of the University of Vermont, who clocked 54:37.2.
