This comprehensive guide will take you through the most beautiful places and tourist spots in Luzon Island in the Philippines. You will find out the most important information like prices, transportation and how to get there, accommodation or the estimated time needed for visit.

1) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Rice terraces in B anaue & Batad

There is a lot of rice fields in northern Luzon but in Batad and Banaue they are concentrated in one hilly place, where they create an absolutely amazing landscape. The locals call those rice terraces the eighth wonder of the world!

The rice terraces in Batad can be reached only by walk. We definitely recommend visiting this lovely remote mountain village! It is almost unbelievable that there are still inhabited places that you can reach only by foot. We spent there whole 2 days – walking through these amazing rice terraces and taking pictures. According to the locals, rice terraces are a profitable business.

How to get to Banaue & Batad?

A lot of tourists visit only Batad rice terraces as the only place in Luzon. Well, this monumental scenery is absolutely worth it! Although, we recommend combining this trip with Sagada.

Getting from Manila to Banaue

You can book bus tickets from  Manila to Banaue and back at 12GO . The journey between Manila and Banaue takes 8-10 hours. You can get a one-way ticket from $ 13 (PHP 450).

There are 3 bus companies, each starting from a different location in Manila:

• Ohayami Transit – corner of Fajardo Street and Lacson Avenue, Sampaloc Manila
• Danga Transit – Florida Cubao Terminal near Kamias
• Coda Lines – Cubao HM Transport Terminal

Getting from Banaue to Batad

Batad is located about 18 km from Banaue. The Jeepney (minibus) to Batad goes regularly only once a day, at 3 PM. The journey takes about 45 minutes and it cost 150 PHP. Jeepney back to Banaue leaves from Batad early in the morning (ask for the exact time at your hostel).

If you miss that Jeepney, you can go by tricycle for 400 PHP (or for 300 PHP only to the saddle – it is 3 more kilometers by foot from there). Alternatively, you can arrange some other taxi, but that is going to be more expensive.

Another option is to take the Jeepney towards Bangaan or Mayoyao and get off at Batad Junction. From here it is 6 km by walk (and it’s uphill).

Sagada – Bontoc – Banaue

If you are arriving from Sagada, you have to get to Bontoc first. There is a regular Jeepney from Sagada to Bontoc (timetable is available at Sagada tourist office). There are shared vans going from Bontoc to Banaue for 150 PHP. They are supposed to have 1-hour interval during the morning, but the driver is waiting for the passengers to fill up the van completely. The journey from Bontoc to Banaue takes about 2 hours.

If you want to get from Sagada to Batad in 1 day, you should leave Sagada early in the morning.

Where to stay in Banaue ?

There are multiple different options in Banaue . We recommend Bogah Homestay with a wonderful view of the rice terraces.

Where to stay in Batad ?

Our favorite place was Ramon’s place . If you search a good value for money pick Batad View Inn and Restaurant . In general, don’t expect anything luxurious (everything is very difficult to bring/carry here). Expect simple facilities, but very welcoming hosts.

You can also choose from many other options, whether at Agoda or Booking .

What should you consider?

In any case, we do not recommend traveling with a suitcase to Batad village. Prepare for a mountain trek to get there, so the suitcase is not an ideal choice. Everything is much easier with a backpack in the Philippines.

Batad – Trip to the Tappiya waterfall

Trek to Tappiya Waterfall is a popular hiking trip from Batad. Narrow paths around the rice terraces with significant descent will bring you to the Tappiya waterfall. The landscape is beautiful and you can extend your trek as you wish by wandering around the beautiful rice terraces.

They will try to offer you to pay for trekking guides at your accommodation, but that is not necessary (GPS and offline map is enough).

Recommended time to stay in Banaue a Batad

We recommend spending at least 2 full days to enjoy the rice terraces and the mountain area of Batad and Banaue, there.

2) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Sagada

Sagada is a magical and very interesting village, which has a lot to offer. Whether you plan to visit the mystical aerial cemetery, so-called Hanging Coffins or stroll to a nearby waterfall, beautiful church, or explore Sagada Caves with a dose of adrenaline speleology!

How to get to Sagada?

From manila to sagada.

If you are heading from Manila directly to Sagada, there is nothing easier than booking your bus online. The journey takes 12 hours and buses depart from Manila in the morning. Prices start at $ 18.

From Baguio to Sagada

You can get to Sagada by GL Trans buses, which leave Baguio every hour from 6:00 AM, the last bus departs at 13:00. Buses depart from the bus terminal: Baguio City. The journey takes 5-6 hours. You can buy tickets on the spot.

After you arrive in Sagada:

The bus stops right in front of the tourist information office, where you have to register and pay the tourism fee (you won’t be able to book any activity without this confirmation).

There is an ATM at the tourist information office.

Accommodation in Sagada

There are some options to choose from in   Sagada . We can recommend Agape Log Cabin And Restaurant with a beautiful wooden interior in the heart of the village.

2a) Hanging Coffins in Sagada

A truly mystical place is located nearby the village of Sagada. There is an aerial cemetery high in the rocks called Hanging Coffins. Several dozens of coffins are either hung directly on the rock or simply stacked on top of each other in caves among the rocks. That is the 2,000-year-old  Igorot  burial tradition.

However, not everyone can be buried in this honor way. There are some criteria:

• A person must be over 80 years old
• Must have children
• His/her children must be married
• And also must have grandchildren

Although the Philippines is a Christian country, this funeral ritual is open to non-Christians as well. The only difference is the type of coffin. Non-Christians are buried in a hollowed tree trunk tied with a rope and placed inside in a fetal position.

Except Hanging Coffins hanging you can see also a lot of coffins in the caves around the trail in Echo Valley. Some coffins are already falling apart.

Why are the hanging coffins hanging?

Our guide told us, that they were simply worried that dogs will eat the corpse. Another reason was that they wanted to be closer to the sky due to the belief that the higher the dead were placed, the greater the chance for their spirits reaching a higher nature in the afterlife. Believe it or not, this tradition is still ongoing, the latest man was buried in 2010.

Hanging Coffins: Entrance fee and guides to Echo Valley

You are required to pay for a local guide and there is no other way to visit Echo Valley without the guide. You can join some other people to pay for one guide together. If you are 4 you will pay around 200-300 PHP per person.

The journey to the Echo Valley begins several dozens of meters behind the Sagada church. You can leave your backpack at the stand where the entrance fee is collected. Your guide is probably going to be someone local. Our guide told us that her grandma was buried high in the rocks in the Echo Valley.

2b) Sagada Caves

Sumaguing-Lumiang Cave is truly impressive creation of mother nature. You can easily book a guided caving tour at the Tourist Center. There are 2 options:

• Shorter Samuguing Cave (tour last approx. 2-2,5 hours), which is quite easy and safe, or:
• Lumiang – Sumaguing Cave connection , which is quite adventurous ( tour last approx. 4-5 hours)

Lumiang-Sumaguing cave connection – Sagada

We decided to take the adventurous option . But we did not expect that much adrenaline… We got headlamps and started climbing down to the bottom of the cave. Some places required nearly acrobatic positions (seriously, nothing for overweight people). Well, most of the rock was really slippery and I don’t even want to know how deep was the abyss we had to climb around with no safety materials. After this excursion, we understood why there were T-shirts with giant letters – “I survived Sagada” in every souvenir shop.

Prepare to get a little wet and dirty, you are going to climb wet rocks, and sometimes you will need to climb up the rope as well. Regarding the safety standards – this would not be allowed in Europe 😀 Be prepared for that and enjoy it!

2c) The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Sagada

Be sure to visit the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin. It is an Anglican church that was built in 1904 by American missionaries. You can visit it on the way to Hanging Coffins.

2d) Bomod-ok and other waterfalls in Sagada

You can take a nice track to the Bomod-ok waterfalls, where you can even swim. Allow about 4-6 hours for the whole trip. There is a possibility to arrange a guide for 500 PHP in the tourist office.

If you want to explore other waterfalls in the area, you can visit Bokong Falls , with a beautiful lagoon where you can swim or another waterfall – Pongas Falls.

3) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Baguio

Baguio is a lovely city where you will probably stop on your way to Sagada. It has become the summer “capital” of the Philippines thanks to its high altitude (1540 meters above seas level) and the pleasant temperature. Check this Baguio itinerary to plan your trip.

3a) Mines View Park in Baguio

Viewing deck at Mines View Park is one of the most famous and most visited places of Baguio. It is located in the north-western part of the town (4 km from the center). Mines View Park offers beautiful views of the city and former gold mines and copper mines. Apart from several souvenir stalls, you can try traditional Cordirela Regalia clothing.

How to get to Mines View Park?

There is a Jeepney line “Plaza to Mines View” available from the city center. The terminal is located at the bottom of Mabini Street opposite the Danes Bakeshop. The journey takes 5-10 minutes and costs around 12 PHP.

3b) Baguio Cathedral

Cathedral of Our Lady of Atonement in Baguio is located right on the top of the hill with a nice view of the city. If you go by walk from the center, you will find a long and steep staircase on a very steep street. It is a beautiful Roman-Catholic Cathedral and we can definitely recommend visiting it!

3c) Baguio City Market

Baguio City Market is a very nice place to see, even if you don’t plan shopping. You will see a lot of fruits, vegetables, spices, fish, etc. The City Market is spread along Magsaysay Avenue.

3d) Burnham Park

Burnham Park is located in the very center of the city is a nice place to have a walk. You can buy ice cream, fruits, go for a “Swan ride”, rent a bike or even roller-skate in the indoor arena.

We found a good and cheap restaurant there – The Ganza Restaurant.

3e) Baguio night market

If you stay overnight, visit the night market. It takes place every evening, between 9 PM and midnight right next to Burnham Park in the middle of Harrison Road.

3f) Baguio Botanical Garden

If you are a fan of different flowers and plant species, you may also like visiting the botanical garden. Baguio Botanical Garden is also known as Igorot Village (there are the original cottages or carved sculptures) and at the entrance, you can also take a picture with a group of locals wearing traditional costumes. There is no entrance fee to Baguio Botanical Gardens. Garden closes at dusk.

How to get to Baguio Botanical Garden?

The entrance to the Botanical Garden is located on Leonardo Wood Road , between Write Park and Teachers Camp. You can get there by various Jeepney lines from the city (going in the direction of Mines View, Pacdal Beckel, Country Club, Navy Base, Tuding and Itogon).

4) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Hundred Islands National Park

This could be the most beautiful National Park on Luzon island. There are exactly  123 small islands in this beautiful National Park.  You can  hire a boat  and your captain or boatmen will guide you among these cute islands. It is just a very short distance from the island to the island. There is a very nice view from several Islands! You can even ride a  zip-line  from one of these Hundred Islands. I must admit that this zip-line was the most beautiful one I’ve ever tried! Actually, there is a wide range of activities . You can make a single day trip or choose the overnight option.

What to expect?

There is a statue of Jesus – almost like in Rio, a cave you can swim in (and also jump into at the high tide), another island has an excellent restaurant, beach, and bridge from one island to another. You can also enjoy a superb zipline with amazing views on Governor’s Island, do a cool snorkeling stop or visit a bamboo ba r, which has a perfect ramp for jumps.

Entrance fee to Hundred Islands National Park – Luzon

Before embarking on an adventure cruise, you need to visit Park Infocentre, which is right in the harbor. You a required to register there and pay the entry (you will receive a document which you will present to your boatmen).

• Park entrance 30 PHP per person.
• Environmental fee 40 PHP/day per person.

TIP: Bring enough cash! It is not possible to pay by card on islands.

As mentioned, you can choose between a one-day trip and overnight stay. If you decide to take overnight stay , except that it will be at least twice as expensive. It is also necessary to book accommodation on the islands (from 1000 PHP) or if you have your own tent, you only pay 200 PHP. They will tell details at the information center.

Hiring a boat (with boatmen)

Price of the boat depends on its size . You can arrange a group of people to share costs. But consider that the trip is variable and it’s up to your decision (group decision if you are more people there) how much time you spend on each island. So different people will have different needs, that is why it’s maybe worth paying for the private boat.

• Small boat (1-5 person) – 1400 PHP per day (3000 PHP for 2 days)
• Middle size boat (6-10 person) – 1800 PHP per day (3800 PHP for 2 days)
• Big boat (11-15 person) – 2000 PHP per day (4500 PHP for 2 days )

How to get to Hundred Islands National Park?

Bus from manila to alaminos.

The first step is to get to Alaminos. You can book direct buses to Alaminos from Manila at 12GO . The journey takes about 3-4 hours. From Alaminos, you can easily reach the port by tricycle. Look for the Lucap tricycle terminal.

5) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Mt. Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is a volcano with a beautiful Crater Lake in the middle. Its colors change every week according to the lake plankton lifecycle. The color can range from turquoise blue, green to brown.

The trip is a great experience from the beginning. There is a wide river, so you will be transported by an army vehicle, which must be assisted by a giant tractor so help it cross the river. You can’t get there without a guide, it is necessary to join an organized tour , which includes transport across the river and to the beginning of the hiking trail.

As soon as you get to the “truck” base, there is going to be a little trip introduction with coffee or tea. Time to get ready to jump on the army vehicle or jeeps and head off. The road is incredibly dusty . You can see the indigenous people of Aeta Tribe on the way. As soon as trucks arrive at the trailhead, it is time to start 7 km hike up. There are toilets at the beginning if you need.

The trail leads through the volcanic landscape and laters through the gorge with the river. There are some simple souvenirs shop and snack bars on the way. There is a beautiful view of Crater Lake at the end. The color of the lake will be a surprise…

How to get to Mount Pinatubo?

There are some options to choose from. You can either go directly from Manila , join the tour at designated pick-up locations or come directly to the “truck” base nearby Mount Pinatubo.

If you go by bus directly from Manila, be prepared for very early departure (around 3 or 4 AM from Manila).

You are likely to meet locals returning from the nearest town on their water buffalo and later even visit them directly in one of their huts!

If you are a fan of Spanish Colonial Architecture , you should definitely visit Vigan. The city is listed at UNESCO World Heritage List. 7) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Manila

I would like to give you a friendly advice: Don’t stay in this city longer than you need to. Manila is a city of contrasts. Although you can find there, luxury western cafés, where coffee cost around 3 USD or fast foods like McDonald’s, you can find there also street grills, where a 9-year-old boy is preparing dinner for you and even his younger brother assists him with accepting payments meanwhile their father (who is sitting nearby) is watching them.

You can get across half of the city for 0,15 UDS only. Believe me, it is not a pleasant experience, I was glad I didn’t suffocate with all that smog! If you drive Jeepney or a tricycle, you have no chance to avoid literally black clouds of smoke from all these old vehicles. Every single ecologist would get mad there! Rivers and streets are full of garbage, rubbish, and dirt.

During our travels, we are used to walking around the city according to our GPS and point of interests. It’s NOT the best idea in Manila! During that walk, we found ourselves in places where you realize how lucky you are that you can live somewhere else. We saw children sleeping on the streets or other people who live in the most primitive “shelters” around the street. Chickens and cocks were tunning around the streets in the middle of this ugly city. It was highly inappropriate to take pictures of that scenery, so there is no illustration.

Manila Ocean park

If you have some time, Manila Ocean Park is nice place to visit . You can see the aquariums, parrot, and seal show. The best and cheapest is the Ocean Park Attraction Pass   (with the lowest price guarantee).

Accommodation in Manila

The best accessible area near the airport is Pasay . There is also a bus station , from where you can get o buses to explore places in Luzon Island.

6. The Hundred Islands

Deer and wild pigs abound in these forests. It is a biological hotspot, home to orchids, different bird species, civet cats, and thousands of flora species.

In some parts of the forest, the trees are small that hunters could see deer or wild pigs running on the background. Thick mosses, some reaching up to 1 meter, cover most of the forests and trees.

Underrated as the areas of Northern Luzon may be, it offers a wealth of options to try with exciting destinations such as Baguio, La Union, Zambales and so much more. These destinations are accessible either by car or bus, so it dispenses with the need for booking a plane ticket.

Always offer gas money when you are a passenger..

Regardless of your relationship to the host of your road trip, be considerate enough to pitch in for gas money—or at least offer to do. Most drivers typically do not ask their passengers for gas money, but that does not mean that you should not provide. Take the initiative and politely offer gas money. How much you give usually depends on the number of passengers there are, the distance as well as the car’s gas tank. If the driver or host declines your offer, you can always opt to repay them in some other way. Instead of gas money, you can offer to pay for their half of the lodging accommodations or treat them to a meal.

The driver gets to decide the music.

As a passenger, it is imperative to keep in mind and understand that the driver has control over the music. Why? Because they are the ones who can determine which kinds of music would keep them awake and ones that would put them asleep. As they are the ones handling the wheel, it is important to choose music that would make their drive more comfortable and bearable—especially on long road trips. Sure, you might not exactly agree with their music tastes but refrain from pressing the skip button. To make your trip enjoyable, engage in road trip games or have a conversation with people in the car instead.

Eat only appropriate food.

Some car owners tend to have specific car rules and they expect you to abide by those rules should you ever find yourself in the car. If you wish to consume something while on the road, ask the owner if they could, should they permit it, be sure to steer clear from food items that can get potentially messy or ones that emit particularly strong odors such as shawarma wraps, wings, ribs, pizza, burgers with extra sauce or the like. Opt for finger foods and minimize crumbs as much as possible.

Take advantage of restroom breaks.

It is recommended to watch how much water you are consuming while you are driving cross-country as you do not want to waylay your trip by asking for way too many bathroom breaks. In any case, you should always seize the opportunity to take your bathroom breaks regardless of whether you wish to go or not. You want to reach your destination at the quickest possible time and if that means fewer bathroom breaks, then so be it. Take care of business whenever you can and limit your fluid intake.

Controlling the air-conditioning

WHERE TO GO IN LUZON

While La Union is widely regarded as the surfing capital up North (or even in the Philippines), the province offers a myriad of activities for surfers and non-surfers alike. Sure enough, surfing should be in your itinerary, but if you wish to give surfing and to swim a break, you might want to go grape picking or visiting the old lighthouses in San Juan.

Known as the “City of Pines,” Baguio City remains to be a delightful Northern Luzon destination for both tourists and locals alike. The city’s climate, as well as the perfectly preserved historic buildings, would make for an exciting place to visit over the summer. While the city is considered “highly urbanized” today by modern standards, it is still one of the most natural cities on the island of Luzon insomuch that this should be included in the travel bucket list of nature enthusiasts.

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE

From spelunking in Lumiang and Sumaguing Caves to walking along the rice terraces, Sagada is an adventure retreat on its own.

If you wish to take a break from the “Summer Capital of the Philippines” known as Baguio City (and avoid the crowds of tourists flocking to its respective tourist spots), then head on to Benguet for a change. Located just beside Baguio City, Benguet is known to be the country’s leading supplier of strawberries and has even won a Guinness title for the largest strawberry shortcake back in 2004. However, apart from strawberry picking, the province promises a wealth of attractions to see. Some of the things you can do are hiking at Mt. Kalugong, visit Bell Church and even ghost hunting at the Diplomat Hotel.

While Bontoc primarily overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Banaue and Sagada, Bontoc is slowly making a name for itself through its showcase of various attractions and activities insomuch that tourists traveling up north are finding it harder to overlook this beautiful little province. If you are the individual who has always had a penchant for taking the off-the-beaten-track, then this mountain province will undoubtedly delight you with its charming attractions draped by verdant greenery. Like Banaue, Bontoc has its own Rice Terraces in Maligcong. Apart from that, you have two other mountains to trek and explore (Mt. Fato and Mt. Kofafey respectively)

Typically, most travelers would never leave the Ifugao province without seeing the Banaue Rice Terraces. However, while Ifugao Province’s popularity is attributed to this worldwide famous rice terraces, it is not the only attraction the province has to offer. Indeed, the rice terraces of Banaue are a sight to behold but apart from admiring the majestic view, make your experience more immersive by watching an Ifugao cultural show and dancing to the sound of gongs.

Zambales is one of the more underrated beach destinations in North Luzon massively overshadowed by La Union and Batangas. However, the province has a charm on its own and is proving to be quite the tourist destination over the years. Apart from the gorgeous beaches, the area promises a wealth of activities for you to try such as appreciating wildlife, exploring famous volcanoes, camping out and gazing at the night sky.

QUEZON PROVINCE

One of the charming things about Luzon is the fact that it does not have just one but two places designated as Quezon. While Quezon City is more recognized and famous worldwide, its provincial counterpart has a subtle charm to it that is often overlooked by tourists. Indeed, while this province is not as famous as its neighbors, it promises a myriad of attractions to an intrepid traveler. Some of the things you can expect are old churches rife with history, heritage houses with unique stories and to top all of that off. You get to sample gastronomic food that is priced far cheaper than what it would have been had you gotten them back in the city.

Visiting Ilocos Sur is pretty much like revisiting and digging into the past. If you wish to know more about how the Philippines looked like during the Spanish colonial era, then you should make a detour in Ilocos Sur. Among the things you can find are cobblestone streets as well as heritage houses insomuch that your experience can be best described as a trip back to a rich and colorful past.

Pagudpud is a tourist destination unlike any other in the Philippines. Located in Ilocos Norte, this idyllic destination encourages visitors to take a step back, slow down and live in the moment. Apart from the breathtaking scenery of verdant green hills and grassy plains, this untainted oasis has its fair share of pebble and white sand beaches sans the routine disturbance of nightlife parties. Indeed, if you wish to escape to a paradise retreat away from the constant hustle and bustle of the city, you are sure to find sanctuary here.

There is probably no other Philippine province more heavily laden with history than Bataan is. The area has seen some of the most significant events in Philippine history which include the Bataan Death march as well as the Fall of Bataan. In this regard, you will see many monuments peppered around the province that would reference its historic past. Of particular interest are the markers and monuments that pay tribute to the courageous soldiers that fought during World War II. However, apart from being a town heavily burdened with history, Bataan has more to offer than just snippets into the Philippines’ past. NUEVA ECIJA

Upon mention of Nueva Ecija, two things come to mind: carabaos and dairy. Indeed, this quaint but charming province in Northern Luzon is primarily known for dairy and carabao. In this regard, many tourists might dismiss the town as another boring destination, but unbeknownst to them, the province is rife with opportunities for exploration. Some of the things you can do are trekking, zip lining, bamboo rafting and the like making Nueva Ecija a rural settlement that leaves visitors in awe.

Admittedly, the province of Tarlac is not known for its tourism. It is a stopover destination for many travelers who are bound for northern parts of the country such as Baguio and the Ilocos region. Despite this, however, Tarlac proves to be a province with potential for tourism insomuch that it can be seen as an emerging tourist destination. For starters, Tarlac is well known for its eco-tourism which means that trekking and swimming in falls are some of the things you can enjoy while here. Some other activities you can enjoy are ATV riding, Zip lining, and other outdoor activities in Tarlac Recreational Park.

It is not often that people would regard Cagayan as a tourist spot. More often than not, the province is overlooked in favor of more popular Northern Luzon tourist destinations. However, the area is home to many attractions, both natural and human-made which means, people are missing out a lot if they failed to include this in their stop. Apart from the beautiful vistas, the province is home to its fair share of beautiful beaches and impressive churches that would entice history buffs and culture enthusiasts alike.

Pangasinan is frequented by travelers mainly because other popular Luzon tourist destinations border it. To the North are La Union and Benguet, Nueva Ecija to the East and Zambales and Tarlac to the South. While merely a stopover for some, Pangasinan proves to pack a punch when it comes to regaling tourists and visitors alike. The province boasts of stretches of white sand beaches, scenic terrains, magnificent caves, and ancient Hispanic churches. More importantly, it is home to Lingayen Beach where you can get a glimpse of the world-famous Philippine sunset.

LUZON TOURIST SPOTS

1. pagudpud.

We have been visiting twice Pagudpud so far and it’s one of our top tourist spots in the Philippines. It’s so quiet and great place to take pictures. Most of the tourists are locals.

The beaches are so beautiful and the sunsets are so colorful. Plus there are many places to visit around Pagudpud which keeps us busy for a few days always that we go to Pagudpud.

2. BANGUI WINDMILLS, ILOCOS NORTE

Bangui Wind Farm  is a wind farm in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. The wind farm is  created to supply electricity to the province. Thus, the windmills are not only beautiful to look at; they are also useful and environmental tools used to supply electricity.

The beach is so windy an ideal for taking pictures. To get Bangui windmills from Pagudpud is 25 kilometers ride.

Laoag on the way to Pagudpud is a nice place to stop for trying local food. You can visit St. William’s Cathedral in Laoag City is famous for its Sinking Bell Tower. It is one of the things that will capture the attention of the tourists upon entering the city.

The bell tower is one of the landmarks of Spanish colony in the Philippines. The tower has earned its “sinking” reputation because it is so heavy and it was built on sandy foundations that it has been consistently sinking into the ground.

Beautiful  beaches in Bataan  and amazing sunsets in Bataan. So much history in the Philippines in this Province. Bataan is popular because of the resorts for getaways from Manila and Clark. There is so much to explore plus is close from Angeles City in Pampanga where we are based.

Vigan is a city in the Philippines located in Ilocos Sur. It’s known for its preserved Spanish colonial and Asian architecture. And because of its beauty and its well-preserved Spanish-era streets, Vigan has been listed as a  UNESCO World Heritage Site . Great place to walk around, try local food and visiting museums to know more about the Filipino history.

6. LA UNION

La Union is  one of the most popular spots for surfers . But this place is more than just its beautiful waves! There are many things to do apart from surfing. The nightlife is great and there are beautiful beaches in Bacnotan just 10 kilometers far from La Union.

After visiting Banaue and Sagada, you might want to go on a trip to Baguio City, the Summer Capital of the Philippines. It is a famous place for its temperature, beautiful views, and of course, strawberries!

If you are available, try to visit during the month of February because it is when the month-long Panagbenga Festival is celebrated! Panagbenga Festival is also known as the Flower Festival and it is the most awaited festival in Baguio City. Experience dancing on the streets with large flower costumes and loud music.

8. BANAUE RICE TERRACES, IFUGAO

Found on the northern part of Luzon, Banaue is one of the tourist spots in the Philippines. This is the perfect place if you want to take a break from the city and inhale fresh air, feel the cold breeze, and feed your eyes with stunning views. Banaue and Batad rice terraces are amazing and it’s great to get lost around the area!

Hike the downtown up to Banaue Viewpoint because it really feels good to be at the top of the mountain! Banaue is one of the spots where you will realize how beautiful nature is. You should also try watching Ifugao cultural shows and dance to the sound of gongs.

9. SAGADA, MOUNTAIN PROVINCE

Sagada is 3 hours away from Banaue. Tourists are encouraged to go here from Banaue during daytime as transportation might be quite difficult during the night. It was a great experience riding jeepneys full of people and sometimes you have to go on the top.

It is famous for the hanging coffins, rice terraces, lakes, and rich heritage and culture. It is also a popular spot for locals during the holy week, as a pilgrimage.

10. HUNDRED ISLANDS, PANGSINAN

This group of 123 islands is a popular destination in the Province of Pangasinan. Apart from enjoying the views, you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling and there is a pilgrimage island. Most of the tourist are locals and you can even enjoying overnight camping if you wish. This destination isn’t very popular for foreigners.

11. SUBIC, ZAMBALES

One of the most  adventurous  places in the country, Subic should be in your list of places to visit in the Philippines. They are famous for their Zoobic Safari, where you can experience the country’s very own African adventure. You just have to pay for the entrance fee and enjoy taking pictures of the animals.

If you are traveling with a kid, you should also check Ocean Adventure. Have fun with the kids watching dolphin and sea lion shows. You can also find an Oceanarium, or a big aquarium where you can watch marine animals in their habitat. Nightlife is great around Pier One for dinner and drink.

12. anilao, batangas.

Ah, one of our favorites! We loved our diving experience in this quiet barangay in Mabini, Batangas. It is just a 3-hour drive from Manila and is a famous spot for diving enthusiasts. You can also do snorkeling here, as the water is clean and clear. It’s the perfect spot to relax after a long week. The picture above is from Sepoc Island!

13. TAAL VOLCANO, BATANGAS

You will fall in love with the views from the viewing point in Taal Volcano, but you will fall in love more with the view from the Red Lava Viewing Point, where you can view the crater of the volcano. No worries if you do not like hiking. It was just an easy hike, that even a kid can do it.

Now if you love volcanoes and lakes, then it is recommended for you to visit Taal Volcano in  Tagaytay . It Is the 2 nd  most active volcano in the Philippines and a popular tourist spot in Batangas. It´s a must in the places to visit in the Philippines.

14. TAAL LAKE IN TAGAYTAY

You will appreciate Taal Lake better through Taal Lake Yacht Club. They offer boats for rent, and they could teach you how to sail on Taal’s beautiful lake. The club offers  kayak  for a solo ride or a couple, as well as  catamarans  having four and six passenger capacity.

Renting a boat that has a passenger capacity of one to four costs about  1500-2000 PHP  while bigger boats cost about  1900 PHP  for an hour, and  4200 PHP  for the whole day. For couples that enjoy tandem kayaks, they may rent it for  400 PHP per hour  and  1200 PHP  for the whole day.

If you’re feeling a little bit more brave you could also try paddle boards for  300 PHP  per hour and  900 PHP  for the whole day. Rest assured that these services come along with either/or life vests, instructors and drivers.

15. MAYON VOLCANO, BICOL

This volcano is one of the things the Philippines boasts. It is an active, perfect-cone volcano that is famous to tourists.

Aside from the Mayon Volcano, don’t forget to taste the delicacy of the Bicolanos- spicy foods. You can even find chili ice cream here! Would you dare to try it?

16. DONSOL, SORSOGON

And the last but not the least on our list of places to visit in Luzon- Donsol. This place is famous because it is known as the home of  Butanding  or the Whale Sharks.

When you visit Donsol, you shouldn’t miss diving and swimming with the whale sharks. Don’t worry because they are friendly creatures. Just don’t do anything that will stress or scare them.

17. NASUGBU

Visiting Nasugbu, Batangas is definitely underrated compared to the more popular destinations in the Philippines. It’s beauty is also incomparable. Nasugbu, Batangas is one of the most  beautiful places you can  visit in the Philippines .

Only a few hours from Manila, there are many things to do in Nasugbu. You can dive, swim, snorkel, do island hops and do amazing trips in Nasugbu,  Batangas .

18. EL NIDO, PALAWAN

This is on the top of our list despite of its actual location being on the southern part of Luzon. We just can’t help it because it is one of our favorite places in the world! We have been here a few times already and every single visit was unique, and we loved every single experience we had.

You will seriously forget all the problems you have once you step on the clear waters and white sand beaches of El Nido. It was once a quiet place north of Palawan but because of number of people visiting here, it was developed but still beautiful!

19. PUERTO PRINCESA, PALAWAN

Another gift from above, Puerto Princesa! It is the capital of Palawan and the most visited part of the province. Unlike El Nido, the capital is not famous for its beaches.

It is famous worldwide for its  UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Palawan Underground River or also known as Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park. You will see unbelievable limestone formations here as you explore the underground river.

20. CORON, PALAWAN

Isn’t it obvious that we love Palawan so much? Another spot we recommend you include in the places to visit in the Philippines is Coron.

You will surely love diving and snorkeling here. Island hopping is also a famous activity in Coron that you shouldn’t miss. Lastly, if you have time don’t forget to hike Mount Tapyas. You have to hike for 20-30 minutes to get to the top and enjoy the picturesque views. It is surely worth it!

21. PORT BARTON

The sunsets are amazing in Port Barton. The island hopping is one of our favorite in the Philippines. You can see turtles snorkeling and swimming. And if you want an amazing experience you can enjoy camping. The beaches are so perfect with white sand and blue water.

Unlike in the United States or Europe, traveling by road in the Philippines won’t get you from one end to the other. Comprised of over 7,000 islands, travellers usually have to take planes or ferries to travel around the Philippines. But there is one island, the biggest in the country, that’s fantastic for long-haul drives – the main island of Luzon. With fantastic provinces all across the island and scenic views along the way, Luzon will quench your thirst for open road adventures.

A longtime favorite among Filipinos is the cool, pine-scented escape of Baguio. Roughly four to five hours from Manila , Baguio sits within the extensive Cordillera mountains, giving it the temperate weather locals love to escape to, especially at the height of summer. Here, visitors relax at luxuriously cozy The Manor , roam the massive and historical Camp John Hay grounds, visit the various parks like Burnham and Wright, and get cultural at the BenCab Museum . The drive en route to Baguio is also beautiful, shifting from carabaos and rice paddies to lush, green mountains. But this also means that drivers should be prepared for steep, snaking roads and the possibility of fog and minimal visibility.

For traveling foodies, the province of Pampanga should be at the top of the list. Kapampangans(the people of Pampanga) are nationally recognized for their culinary knack. If you’ve got more time on your hands, brave the long journey and head roughly ten hours north of Metro Manila to the province of Ilocos. Once here, drive from Ilocos Sur (south) to Ilocos Norte (north), stopping through Vigan, Laoag, and Pagudpud. The city of Vigan draws tourists with its charming architecture, preserved from Spanish colonial times. Walk down cobblestoned Calle Crisologo and take a kalesa (horse-drawn calash) tour around the city’s sights. Vigan can be well enjoyed in a day.

The province of Rizal is the perfect roadtrip destination for adventurers in love with the great outdoors. Just a two to three hour drive from Manila, Rizal has various rivers, mountains, caves, and waterfalls, making it a hiker favorite. Among its most beautiful natural gems are Mount Daraitan , the Tinipak River (recognized as the cleanest in the region), Daranak Falls , and Batlag Falls .

A new popular spot in the area is the Masungi Georeserve , an outdoor adventurer’s playground. The 1,600-hectare conservation area has a trail set within limestone peaks, caves, and lush rainforests. Adventure lovers will get a kick out of its rope courses and hanging bridges, which also make for fantastic viewing points.

Batangas has always been a popular weekend getaway for Manileños because of its beaches, and due to the fact that it’s only two to three hours from Manila. Those taking a break from busy city life can escape to Laiya Beach, Fortune Island, and the other beaches of Nasugbu. People also come to dive in the barangay (small district) of Anilao, considered one of the best diving spots in the country.

For trekkers who prefer mountains to sea, Batangas is a solid roadtrip destination, with mountains like Batulao , Maculot , Daguldol , and Gulugod Baboy . Another hike for the bucket list is up the active Taal Volcano . This fascinating volcano has a lake at its crater, which contains a tiny islet within. • Kayangan Lake – Palawan will have a number of places on this bucket list because of its sheer beauty. One of the destinations you shouldn’t miss is Kayangan Lake. The latter has some of the clearest waters I’ve seen. It’s so clear you can see the rock formations beneath the surface. It’s also unique because it has a mix of fresh and saltwater. Don’t forget to take a photo (or several photos) of the stunning rock formation before reaching the lake.

• Malcapuya Island – You’ll visit this island when you go on an island hopping escapade while in Coron. Its bone-white and powdery sand along with its clear, cerulean waters make for a relaxing day out. 

• Cadlao Lagoon – El Nido is known for its stunning limestone formations, beaches, and lagoons. Whenever you visit, make sure to add Cadlao Lagoon to your itinerary.  This destination provides visitors with a secluded ambiance (depending on the time you visit). Its limestone formations and clear waters will entice you to go swimming and snorkeling.

• Big Lagoon – Here’s another lagoon in El Nido to add to your list. This famous destination is known for its clear waters, snorkeling spots, and towering limestone. Explore the area on a kayak or just wade in the waters until you leave for your next destination.
• Paradise Beach – This beach in El Nido is succinctly described by its name. Its powdery, white sand and turquoise waters are what you’d imagine paradise would be. Soak in the water or just laze around.

• San Vicente Long Beach – This beach destination in Palawan is said to be the longest in the country. It spans more than 14km and offers a rustic and idyllic vibe for visitors. Lounge around one section of the beach, go swimming, or take long, leisurely walks.

• Calle Crisologo – Located in Vigan, Calle Crisologo is a must-visit for history lovers. This short street is home to many ancestral and old houses. Some of these are now shops and restaurants. It provides visitors with a glimpse of colonial times. You can ride a kalesa as you explore the area to get the full traditional experience.

• Paoay Church – Ilocos has a few historic destinations you might want to add to your bucket list. Paoay Church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s part of the cluster of Baroque churches in the Philippines. One of its unique features is its huge buttresses.

• Miagao Church – If you like visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites, make your way to Iloilo to see Miagao Church. The latter is also part of the cluster of Baroque churches in the Philippines. It has a long history dating to the 18 th century.
• Kapurpurawan Rock Formation – Located in Ilocos, this unique white rock formation is often included in itineraries when heading up north. Its striking appearance will make you want to take multiple pictures.

• Sibang Cove – This beach destination is as remote as it gets. Located in Calayan, Sibang Cove is an unspoilt beach with fine, white sand, and clear waters. Its picturesque beachscape will make you feel like you’re on a deserted island. The waters can get rough, so don’t swim too far from the shore.

• Nagudungan Hill – Also located in Calayan, this hill provides stunning views of the surroundings. You’ll see massive, wave-like rock formations, the sea, and the coast as you explore the hill. Calayan might be difficult to visit, but its remoteness is part of its allure. 

• Vayang Rolling Hills – Batanes is a picturesque destination. One of the places to add to your itinerary while exploring the province is the Vayang Rolling Hills. The trails are easy to walk on while the views of the verdant hills are beautiful.

• Chamantad Viewpoint – Here’s another destination worth visiting in Batanes. Chamantad Viewpoint is my personal favorite. A walk around this area provides you with a bit of everything: rock formations, views of the sea, and the province’s beautiful hills.

• Valugan Boulder Beach – This destination in Batanes will grab your attention because the shore isn’t like other beaches. As its name suggests, this beach is full of boulders and rocks. Valugan Boulder Beach makes for a fetching landscape along with the cliffs and hills.

• Chocolate Hills – If you’re visiting Bohol, one of the places you should definitely visit is the Chocolate Hills. This destination is often splashed on magazines, newspapers, and websites whenever they refer to the province. It deserves the attention it gets. Once you get to the viewpoint, you’ll see numerous hills spread out all over the landscape.

• Boracay White Beach – Boracay is probably the most well-known and touristy destination in the Philippines. However, don’t let this deter you from visiting. It’s still one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Boracay’s magical sunsets can make even the most cynical visitor stand in awe. 

• Batad Rice Terraces – This destination showcases the ingenuity of the locals that built these rice terraces. It’s also possible to hike up the terraces to get spectacular overlooking views of the surroundings.

• Calaguas Island – Located in Camarines Norte province, this island has gained popularity over the years. This comes as no surprise because of its long, powdery, and white sand shore. It might take effort and time to reach this destination, but it’s worth the adventure.
• Kalanggaman Island – This island is part of Leyte province and is one of its most popular tourist destinations. It has a sandbar that stretches from its main white sand beach during low tide. Swim in its clear waters, sunbathe, play beach volleyball, or do whatever water/beach activity you want to do during your visit. 
• Asik-Asik Falls – One of the most spectacular waterfalls I’ve seen is Asik-Asik Falls in North Cotabato. It will make you stop and stare the moment you see it. It takes a bumpy motorcycle ride to reach it, but the views more than make up for the challenge. Take numerous photos and dip into its ice-cold waters to refresh your body. 

• Hinatuan Enchanted River – Located in the province of Surigao del Sur, the Hinatuan Enchanted River will captivate you with its clear, deep, blue water. The water is so clear you can see several meters into it. Visitors are no longer allowed to swim in the main lagoon, but there’s a designated swimming area not too far from it.

• Tinuy-an Falls – If you’re already in Surigao del Sur, add Tinuy-an Falls to your itinerary. Tinuy-an is 55m high and 95m wide. Its curtain-like cascade will grab your attention as you get it into view.

• Matukad Island – Caramoan gained acclaim because it was one of the shooting locations of the hit show Survivor . Its islands are a thing of beauty and worth the trouble of reaching. One such destination of note is Matukad Island. The highlight of a trip is the lagoon you can see when you climb up the rocks.
• Cambugahay Falls – Siquijor has gained popularity since the first time I visited. The island province deserves all the recognition it got with its beautiful beaches and its bucolic charm. One of the must-visit attractions in Siquijor is Cambugahay Falls. Take a break from beach bumming and jump into the cool waters of Cambugahay.
• Sambawan Island – This destination is part of the idyllic province of Biliran. It takes some effort to reach this island, but the trip is worth it. You’ll get a beautiful beach with azure waters and stunning overlooking views when you go up the hill. You can visit as a day trip or spend the night for the full experience. 

• Halea Island Nature Park – This island destination is within the boundaries of Masbate province. This attraction has a beautiful white sand beach and alluring azure waters. It doesn’t get the same attention as many other beach destinations in the country. Other than swimming and beach bumming, you can go snorkeling (if you’re lucky enough, you might see baby sharks).
• Catandayagan Waterfalls – Located in Masbate province, this waterfall is unique because its cascade falls directly into the sea. Visitors can experience its cool water when their boats dock right under the waterfall.

• Cloud 9 – Wave riders unite in Siargao to test their mettle in surfing. Cloud 9 is the perfect place to learn how to surf or improve your skills. There’s plenty of surf shops and instructors where you can learn or rent a surfboard.

• Tangadan Falls – La Union is a famous surfing destination but there’s one attraction you shouldn’t miss during your road trip. Tangadan Falls is a picturesque spot where you can swim in one of its pools or simply take photos to capture its beauty.
• Mt. Mayon – Mt. Mayon towers over Albay province’s landscape. Its perfectly shaped cone reveals itself to visitors on a good day. For hikers, it’s possible to climb this active volcano. Other visitors can enjoy an ATV ride with the volcano as their backdrop.
• Bulusan Lake – This lake is part of the Bulusan Volcano National Park. You can go kayaking or if you have more time, take on the challenge of hiking up the mountain.
• Mt. Pinatubo – Mt. Pinatubo’s eruption in the early ’90s devastated the communities and environment surrounding it. Fast forward to today, it has become a popular day trip destination. Its landscape along the trail and the crater lake are spectacular sights to behold.

• Mt. Ulap – Mt. Ulap is another mountain you’d want to climb while in Baguio. The trail is fit for all types of hikers. The ascents and descents are manageable with some steep parts. However, despite the challenge, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the mountains and hills.

• Mt. Pulag – If you’re a nature lover, you’d want to climb up Mt. Pulag to see and experience the famous sea of clouds. This national park provides trekkers with spectacular views and cool weather. One of the trails to the peak is easy even for beginners with rolling hills and steady ascents. 
• Sohoton National Park – This national park in Samar provides visitors with activities such as caving and boating. You’ll pass through rock formations as you make your way through the river. The stalactites and stalagmites take on different formations depending on how far you stretch your imagination.
• Lake Sebu – Lake Sebu is a popular spot for eco-tourism. Its cool weather, bucolic setting, and beautiful landscapes make it an ideal summer getaway destination. Get an adrenaline rush by riding the zipline that flies you over Lake Sebu’s waterfalls. You can also go on short treks to experience nature.
• Aglicay Beach – Located in Romblon province, Aglicay Beach is a place to get away from it all. This quiet destination allows you to relax and unwind without the crowds. The beautiful beach and the stunning sunsets (and sunrises) provide you with plenty of photo opportunities. 
• Sumaguing Cave – Adventure seekers make their way to Sagada to explore its caves and natural wonders. One such destination you shouldn’t miss is Sumaguing Cave. The latter has stalactites and stalagmites that take on various shapes and sizes.

There are plenty of different tours you can choose from to visit this spot, but you can also get there yourself either by bus or motorbike. You can simply walk to Kawasan falls from the entrance or if you are feeling a bit more adventurous, you can pay to go canyoneering. 

Moalboal is the best place to stay if you want to see Kawasan falls, as it’s only a 30 minute drive away and means you can get there early before the heaps of tourists. These beautiful falls are a must for any Philippines bucket list, so make sure you don’t forget your camera!

4. Zipline in El Nido

If you are looking for a bit of adventure and an awesome view, then going ziplining in El Nido is definitely for you! The zipline is located just above Maremegmeg Beach, which is more commonly known as Las Cabañas Beach. This is definitely an activity for the thrill seekers out there and we would 100% recommend it. 

The zip line is 750m long, and as you go down you’ll get the most beautiful view of the beach, Depeldet Island and the bright blue sea. Whether you want to go down in superman style or a sitting position is up to you, but this is an experience that you don’t want to miss. Just be aware that there are health and weight requirements for this activity, so it’s best to do some research first. 

5. Admire the unique Chocolate hills in Bohol

The Chocolate Hills are found in Bohol, and they are pretty impressive. There are at least 1,268 hills found here and there are some cool stories about their origin. Two of the most popular legends are centered around giants. The first legend is that the hills appeared because of two fighting giants who hurled rocks and boulders at each other. Once their fight was over it led to huge mounds and hills, which are the chocolate hills as we know them today. Another legend claims that a giant became heartbroken, and cried a lot of tears, which led to the formation of these limestone hills.

These unique hills are named ‘the chocolate hills’ because the grass on them dries up during the dry season and turns a chocolate brown colour; pretty cool right? They are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Philippines and it isn’t difficult to see why.  

6. The sardine run in Moalboal

If you want a unique experience to add to your Philippines bucket list, then this is it. Found in Moalboal, the sardine run is something you don’t want to miss out on. Schools of sardines are found only 20m from the shore, giving people the opportunity to snorkel amongst them. Each school has roughly 1 million sardines, so as you can imagine it’s a sight to see. Their sheer numbers are mesmerising, and you will get to see them swirling and changing direction at a breakneck pace. 

Moalboal is a small town found in Cebu and is popular for its beaches and scuba diving. The best time to visit for this experience is during the dry season which is between December-June as these months have the best weather conditions and underwater visibility. The sardines usually school off Panagsama beach, but if you can’t find them just ask around. 

7. Visit the Banaue Rice Terraces

The Banaue rice terraces are found in Ifugao, Luzon. They were carved into the mountains over 2,000 years ago by the Ifugao people and are now a popular tourist attraction. These rice terraces (also known as Hagdan-Hagdang Palayan) were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995 because of their incredible beauty. Apparently these rice terraces cover 4,000 square miles and their total length is estimated to be around 12,500 miles which is pretty impressive! 

When a large number of the Ifugao people left to move on to more urban areas, the terraces began to deteriorate. In the 2000’s Banaue Rice terraces were added to the UNESCO list of ‘world heritage in danger’ and because of this, major restoration efforts were undertaken. In 2012 the rice terraces were removed from the ‘in danger’ list, and now sustainable tourism is being promoted in the area for people to come and enjoy this amazing place.

8. Hiking Mt. Pinatubo

Mt Pinatubo is found in Luzon; about 55 miles north of Manila. After being inactive for centuries; during June of 1991, the volcano erupted. First on the 12th June 1991, and then again, three days later on the 15th June 1991. These explosions produced a column of smoke and ash over 40km high, and left 100,000 people homeless. People fled the area and were then placed into evacuation areas. The eruption caused 300 deaths, and in the weeks after the eruption hundreds more died as a result of disease in the camps. Mt Pinatubo’s eruption was the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century, and had lasting impacts. 

Today, however, you are able to hike up Mt. Pinatubo. The journey usually consists of an hour long jeep ride, and a hike up to the crater lake. The hike is roughly 5.5km to the top and takes about 2-3 hours depending on your fitness level. You can either visit Mt. Pinatubo as part of a tour, or you visit by yourself. If you are wanting to head there on your own, you’ll need to head up to Santa Juliana Capas Tarlac Tourism Office. From there the tourist office will sort out the rest, and there are a few payments that you will need to make. 

9. Explore the UNESCO listed Underground River

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is a UNESCO listed heritage site found in Palawan, and attracts hordes of tourists every year (pre-pandemic of course). The river is found within Puerto Princesa Subterranean River national park, and it emerges from the sea. However, because part of the river is tidal the park’s opening depends on the weather. If there is excessive rain or rough seas, the likelihood is that officials will close the park off.

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is one of the new 7 wonders of nature and is the world’s longest navigable underground river. There are species found here that are endemic to this river system, including snakes, bats and swallows. If you are lucky enough you might even get to see them!

11. Explore the beautiful Balabac Islands

The Balabac Islands are a group of 31 islands found in the Palawan province. A lot of these islands are totally uninhabited, and they are much less crowded compared to other areas in the Philippines like El Nido, Coron and Bohol. If you want to visit the Philippines and are looking to go off the beaten path, then take a trip to these beautiful islands. They are the perfect destination for island hopping! 

People generally tend to go to the Balabac islands from Puerto Princesa. From here you can book a trip to these islands that will usually last between 3-5 days. Depending on your budget you can join a tour and pay per person, or you can spend more and book a private trip.

One of the best things about these islands is the amount of wildlife and marine life that can be found here. A type of mouse deer is found here; endemic to these islands and is known locally as pilandok. The crystal clear waters around these islands are also home to sharks, dolphins, rays and sea turtles among others!

12. Go dolphin & whale watching

The Philippines are a haven for marine life, and there are so many great places to see whales and dolphins. Some of the best destinations to see these incredible creatures are Bohol sea, Tanon Strait and Babuyan Channel.

The Bohol Sea is teeming with marine life; and is home to tuna, dolphins, whales and sea turtles among plenty of other wildlife. If you’re lucky you might even get the chance to see whale sharks, and manta rays. Not fancying a boat trip? Bohol sea is one of the most popular dive sites in the Philippines, so why not take a look at diving here instead?

The Tannon strait connects the Bohol sea and Visayan sea, with the best time to visit being between March and June. During this time you will be able to spot bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins, spotted dolphins, pilot whales and dwarf sperm whales among other wildlife. 

Babuyan Channel is known as a favourite spot for many whale and dolphin species. Humpback whales are even known to pass through this channel between February to April. Another popular spot is Puerto Princesa Bay where a number of marine mammals can be found including risso’s dolphins, spotted dolphins, spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Bryde’s whales. If you love wildlife then whale and dolphin watching here in the Philippines is a must! 

13. Snorkel and explore the World War II shipwreck of Lusong Gunboat

The shipwreck of Lusong Gunboat is found in Coron and is now one of the most popular snorkeling and dive sites in this region. The ship was one of 12 Japanese supply ships that were hit by an airstrike whilst they were anchored in Coron Bay. Lusong Gunboat then sank to a depth of 10m, where it remains to this day as a popular tourist attraction. It truly is an amazing sight, and you can dive down inside the wreck for an even cooler experience. 

Just along from the shipwreck is Lusong coral garden which is a beautiful reef full of colorful coral and crystal clear waters. There are so many colourful fish here to see including clown fish, angel fish, butterfly fish and even giant clams!

14. Drive through the famous palm tree road in Siargao

The palm tree road in Siargao is a very popular photo spot, and everyone who comes here is desperate to get that amazing shot. Endless palm trees line this road, making it a pretty spectacular place. If you have a drone, then it’s the perfect way to see this amazing destination from above. Trust us you won’t be disappointed! This beautiful destination is located on a main road, just 30 minutes outside of General Luna. 

Many travellers hire motorbikes when they come to Siargao, just so they can drive through this tropical paradise. However, we must stress that this is a main road. Plenty of cars and motorbikes come through here everyday, so if you want to get photographs, please use common sense and look out for any oncoming traffic. As the road can get busy, we recommend heading here early in the morning, when the traffic is quiet. Not only will you be a lot safer, but it will be much easier to get those amazing photographs.

15. Look at the hanging coffins in Sagada

The hanging coffins in Sagada may not be what comes to mind when planning a trip to this tropical destination, but it’s one we’d definitely recommend for any Philippines bucket list! The Igorot tribe are found in the northern Philippines, and they have a very unique way of burying their dead. Once a member of the Igorot tribe has passed away, they are buried in hanging coffins which are nailed to the sides of cliff faces.

The common belief of the tribe’s people is that moving their dead higher, brings them closer to their ancestral spirits. This traditional burial is very important to the Igorot tribe, but they only take place every few years now. The elders of the tribe are some of the last practitioners of this ancient burial, with very few members of the younger generation following the tradition. If you do get the chance to see the hanging coffins, it is a very unique experience.

16. Wander through the SM mall of Asia in Manila

The SM mall of Asia is found in the bay city area of Manila. This mall is like nothing you’ve seen, and is one of the top tourist attractions in the city. It’s one of the largest malls in the world and has so much to offer aside from the usual retail shops and restaurants.

This mall has a two storey entertainment complex with movie theaters, an olympic sized ice rink and there is even a small amusement park outside. There is an indoor arena which hosts concerts and other events, and there are firework displays which take place on the weekends. If you have a free evening when visiting Manila, definitely take the time to explore this unique shopping mall. 

17. Go on a canopy walk up the famous cliffs that overlook El Nido

This experience is a must for any Philippines bucket list! The canopy walk is located at Taraw Cliff, and if you walk up then you will get the most incredible view overlooking the bay and Cadlao Island. The climb takes roughly 30 minutes and is relatively easy, aside from the fact it’s pretty high. If you are looking for an experience to help you conquer your fear of heights, this is the one, because you’ll get a pretty amazing view at the end! Imagine getting to the viewpoint, and then seeing an endless view of the bright blue ocean and the limestone cliffs that El Nido is so famous for. You definitely don’t want to forget your camera for this one!

18. Go snorkeling with turtles

Swimming with turtles is an experience that is on many people’s bucket lists. These animals have been around for over 150 million years and they are so graceful. Being able to see them cruising along under the water and just living their lives is such a magical experience. 

They are so many great places to snorkel with turtles in the Philippines, as the surrounding ocean has such rich marine life. Some of the best spots include Apo Reef, Apo Island, Moalboal, Siquijor Island and Port Barton. In our opinion off the coast of Port Barton is one of the best places to see turtles in the Philippines. There is a small area known as ‘Turtle Point’ which is well known for its sea turtle sightings. 

However it is important to do this responsibility so it doesn’t affect the sea turtles. Make sure you keep your distance and don’t splash around as this may spook them. If turtles don’t see you as a threat they will often just allow you to cruise by as they move along. This magical encounter is definitely one for any Philippines bucket list! 

19. Learn to surf in Siargao

Learning to surf can be an incredibly fun (if not a little scary) experience, and where better to do it then on a beautiful tropical island. Siargao is known as the surfing capital of the Philippines because of its towering waves, but also because it’s a great place to teach beginners. You can go surfing all year in Siargao, but if you want to experience the huge waves that this island is known for then it’s best to go between the months of August and November.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced surfer, there are so many great spots to surf in Siargao. Some of the most popular ones are Jacking Horse, Guiuan, Quicksilver and Daku Reef.

20. Relax in the picturesque Port Barton

Port Barton is one of the quieter destinations in the Philippines, but it is just as beautiful. In the past few years guesthouses and cafe’s have started to pop up, and the area is preparing for a tourism boom (post-pandemic of course). Although the area is becoming more popular, the best part about Port Barton is that it still has that local charm.

Some of the best things to do in Port Barton include going on an island hopping tour, hiking up to Pamuayan Falls or renting a kayak to explore white beach. If you are looking for a place that is more relaxed than many of the tourist hotspots, but still has plenty of amazing things to do, then this is it! 

21. Sleep in traditional Filipino style beach bungalows

On our 10 day Philippines trip, after a full packed day exploring we will spend the evening relaxing on the beach and then will head back to our accommodation. Plot twist! You will be staying in a traditional Filipino style beach bungalow for the night so you won’t have far to wander.

22. Go on a firefly tour in Puerto Princesa

Going on a firefly tour is one of the best things to do in Puerto Princesa, and is a pretty cool experience. These tours generally start between 5:30pm and 6:30pm, where you will get picked up at your hotel and then driven to the Iwahig River. 

After you get to the wharf, you will head into the paddle boats with a group of people to watch the riverbank start to illuminate from the glow of the fireflies. The tours usually end between 9:00pm and 10:00pm and you will get dropped off at your hotel afterwards.

If you are looking for a unique experience in the Philippines, then definitely think of adding this one to your itinerary! There are plenty of tour operators you can book this experience with, so shop around and look for the best deal. 

23. Search for Tarsiers in Bohol

There are plenty of incredible things to do in Bohol, but this experience is up there with the best. If you are a wildlife lover, then getting a chance to see these tiny primates for yourself is a must! The Philippine tarsier is known for its small size, and huge eyes that they use to hunt insects at night. Unfortunately, these animals are listed as an endangered species because of the threats they are facing. 

Now the Philippine Tarsier Foundation has set up protected areas for the Tarsier to repopulate, away from humans and any other threats. Tourists can’t enter these areas, but there is a small sanctuary found in Corella where you can get a glimpse of these cute primates. This way, you will be guided through the sanctuary by conservation workers who will point out the tarsiers to you and explain the important work that they do!

24. Explore the beautiful Coron Island

Visiting Coron island is one of the most popular things to do in the Philippines. It is a tropical island found in the province of Palawan, and is part of the Calamian islands. Coron is well known for it’s beautiful beaches, shallow coral reefs and incredible dive spots. Whether you are looking for a relaxing break or an adventure packed holiday, you won’t run out of things to do here!

Some of the most popular things to do include boat tours around the beautiful Coron Bay, relaxing on Banana island and going swimming in the twin lagoons. If you are feeling adventurous you can even kayak around Kingfisher Park, go for a dive in Barracuda Lake to see the underwater mountains, or hike up Mt. Tapyas. Whether you enjoy relaxing on the beach or like to jam pack your itinerary with activities; Coron has so many things to do! 

25. Visit Iwahig Prison

Iwahig Prison is found in Puerto Princesa and is one of the world’s largest open air jails. There are no concrete walls, only a wire fence and a single guard at the entrance. This prison is located over a huge area; 26,000 hectares in fact. If you are looking for a size comparison, that is twice the size of Paris! This prison is very unique, and allows tour groups to come in and learn about how the prison works, and what life is like inside.

This prison is very different to your typical prison and works to rehabilitate the inmates by offering vocational activities such as farming, forestry, carpentry and hospital paramedical work. Apart from maximum security prisoners, all inmates learn a trade where they earn an income each month. Part of this income is then kept in a fund for their release, so they have some savings for when they get out. The idea behind this is to rehabilitate and prepare prisoners for their release, in the hope that they won’t reoffend.

There are so many amazing things to do in the Philippines that you will be spoilt for choice. This beautiful country has so much to offer, and is the perfect destination for any traveller. Worthy PH landmarks to add to your road trip bucket list this 2024

It’s a brand new year full of new possibilities. While the second half of 2023 just seemed to whiz by, January is usually the time to take stock of all the road trips taken last year and plan for the new one. Going on road trips around the country can be a great way to kickstart the year or offer an escape from the daily grind of workweek traffic and have something to look forward to during upcoming long weekends and holidays. But first, make sure your vehicle is registered and roadworthy .

Whether you’re driving on four wheels or two, the open road beckons with promises of adventure, discovery, and the freedom to go wherever you want. But in case you need some ideas for your road trip bucket list beyond the North Loop, Philippine Loop, and speed runs to usual favorites, here are a few suggestions of worthy reference points, road markers , and extreme points around the country that you might want to include in your itineraries.

Highest points of the Philippine Highway System

We’ve all heard of Khardung La, the highest motorable pass in the world at 17,582 feet (5,359 m) above sea level. If this is on your bucket list, how about aiming for some local destinations and driving to the two highest motorable points in the Philippine Highway System instead?

There’s always the Original Highest Point in the Philippine Highway System located in Cattubo, Atok, Benguet. This popular point along the road, standing 7,400 feet (2,300 m) above sea level, is a stopover for any motorist, whether on 4-wheels or 2-wheels, heading up from Baguio to Sagada was officially recognized as the highest altitude highway in the Philippines until 2019.

However, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) confirmed that the highest elevation in the Highway System of the Philippines is now located in the Municipality of Tinoc, Ifugao. The New Highest Point can be found along the Kiangan-Tinoc-Buguias Road with an elevation of 7,968.07 feet (2,428.66 m) above sea level, which is higher by 568.07 feet (173.14 m) compared to the one in Atok. Both are these points are worthy of stopovers on the way to other destinations in the mountainous Cordillera Region.

Longest and tallest bridges in the country

For riders, there’s always something thrilling about being able to cross over long bridges connecting different islands or land masses. The Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (also known as CCLEX), the first expressway in the central Philippines, is currently the country’s longest bridge at 8.9 kilometers (5.5 miles) long. The bridge connects Cebu, the country’s second-largest city, to Cordova town on the neighboring Mactan Island, home of the Mactan International Airport. The toll bridge is also the longest sea-crossing bridge in the Philippines. Upon its launch in April 2022, the CCLEX surpasses the San Juanico Brdige and the 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) Cabdaba Viaduct of the North Luzon Expressway which connects the provinces of Pampanga and Bulacan.

Previously considered the longest bridge in the country, the San Juanico Bridge between the island provinces of Samar and Leyte in Eastern Visayas, has a total length of 2.16 kilometers (1.34 miles). The extreme bridge spans the San Juanico Strait, the narrowest strait in the country connecting Tacloban City on the Leyte side and the town of Santa Rita on the Samar side. The bridge forms a vital part of the Pan-Philippine Highway (commonly known as the Maharlika Highway or Asian Highway 26), a network of roads, bridges, and sea routes that connect the islands of Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao in the country.

With a length of 350 meters (1,150 feet) and a height of 292 feet (89 meters above ground, the Agas-Agas Bridge in the town of Sogod, Southern Leyte is one of the tallest bridges in the Philippines. It’s located in the mountainous Agas-Agas section of the Pan-Philippine Highway and was constructed back in 2006 to cut down driving time for motorists.

Meanwhile, up north, there’s the scenic Patapat Viaduct in Ilocos Norte, another worthy bridge-like structure that’s a favorite stopover for road-trippers and motorcyclists because of its rewarding vantage point of the coastal highway before reaching the coastal resort town of Pagudpud on the northernmost tip of Luzon Island. This concrete coastal bridge is 1.3 km long and elevated 31 meters above sea level. It connects the Maharlika Highway from the Ilocos Region to Cagayan Valley.

Notable road tunnels

Aside from bridges, road tunnels also offer an interesting landmark that you’ll normally pass while driving anyway. Currently the longest road tunnel in the Philippines, the Kaybiang Tunnel in Cavite is popular among motorists as it leads to a scenic view of Nasugbu, Batangas. The tunnel was built in 2012 and opened in July 2013 to provide a quicker route for travelers heading to Tagaytay and Batangas. At 300 meters long, the Kaybiang Tunnel bores through Mt. Palay-Palay and connects Ternate, Cavite to Nasugbu, Batangas. Right after exiting the tunnel at the Nasugbu side, travelers have a seaside view of the islands of Limbones, Carabao, and El Fraile.

For road-trippers riding up north, the Tangadan Tunnel along the Abra-Ilocos Sur (specifically in San Quintin on the border of Ilocos Sur and the Cordillera Administrative Region) is another popular landmark. The short, 40-meter tunnel that cuts through the hills bordering Abra and Ilocos Sur was built in 1934 as a way to divert the old road which was steep and difficult to negotiate.

Other interesting road tunnels that motorcycles and cars can drive through include the Bontoc Tunnel in Mountain Province, the Half Tunnel Halsema Highway along Atok in Benguet, and the 60-meter-long Malabang Tunnel in Lanao del Sur, to name a few.

Kilometer Zero Markers

Kilometer Zero is a marker that stands as a distance reference. In Metro Manila, you can find it located directly across the Rizal Monument in Luneta Park, where Philippine independence was proclaimed in 1946. This significant marker serves as the nation’s starting point when measuring the distance going to the different provinces and cities in Luzon Island and the rest of the Philippines via the Pan-Philippine Highway for the islands of Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao.

In case you didn’t know, most of the roads in the Philippines have a marker that has a label of the distance from their local Kilometer Zero as well as a label of the distance to the next municipality, city, or province. Individual cities often have the Kilometer Zero in the City Capitol or Central Post Office. Leyte and Mindanao also have their own kilometer zero markers in front of the Leyte Provincial Capitol in Tacloban and Marawi, respectively.

Geodetic Center of the Philippines

Looking for a ride destination for Love Month? Marinduque has been dubbed the ‘Heart of the Philippines’ because of the island’s shape and geographical location. In case you want to step foot in the exact center of the country, a trip to Marinduque should be on your list.

The Luzon Datum of 1911 in Marinduque is a stone marker that serves as the primary geodetic reference or central reference point for all maps and surveys made in the Philippines.

This historically significant marker is located on the highest hill in Balanacan, the northwest point of Marinduque Island. A new road near a set of 468 concrete steps leading up to the marker makes this spot more easily accessible to those with private vehicles.

Extreme tips or points

Geographically, there are extreme points in the country that lie farther north, south, east, or west than any other location. This includes:

• Northernmost point: Mavulis (Y’Ami) Island, Itbayat, Batanes
• Southernmost point: Frances Reef, Sitangkai, Tawi-Tawi
• Southernmost island: Saluag Island, Sibutu, Tawi-Tawi
• Easternmost point: Pusan Point, Caraga, Davao Oriental
• Westernmost point: Balabac Great Reef

However, most of these are located on islands and are difficult to get to with your own transport. Of the points above, Pusan Point in Davao Oriental is one you can drive to. This spot on the easternmost part of the archipelago is said to be where the first light hits the Philippines. It’s said that the sun rises 4 minutes earlier at this point, making it a great place to watch the sunrise. You can drop by this point if you’re on your way to Aliwagwag Falls from Mati or vice versa.

For road trippers on cars and motorcycles, an easier benchmark would be to aim for the extreme cities or points at the different tips of the country. The Northernmost city is Laoag in Ilocos Norte, while the Southernmost city is General Santos in South Cotabato. The Easternmost city is Bislig in Surigao del Sur, while the Westernmost city is Puerto Princesa in Palawan.

On Luzon Island, the Northernmost point is Maira-ira in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, while the Southernmost point can be found in Bon-Ot Big, Matnog, Sorsogon.

On the island of Mindanao, the Northernmost point is in Punta Bilar, Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, while the Southernmost point is Tinaca Point, Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.

Baguio is a landlocked city in the heart of the province of Benguet. Popularly known as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines,” Baguio City serves as the gateway to the Cordillera region.

Because of its elevation of 1,500 meters above sea level and its pine-clad topography, Baguio City enjoys relatively cooler temperates compared to the metro and nearby provinces. Baguio escapades are popular for both locals and international travelers who want to escape the city heat.

The weather dips to as low as 10 degrees in the cold months of December, January, and February. The dry season lasts from November to April, while the rainy season is for the rest of the year.

2. banaue     .

Banaue (also spelled Banawe) is mainly visited for its stunning rice terraces. The 2000-year old Banaue Rice Terraces were created by the Ifugao people in a massive engineering project to cover the sides of the valleys. 

The Banaue Rice Terraces is one of the most famous tourist spots in Banaue . This amazing landscape designated as a National Cultural Treasure has also made its mark in popular culture.

In the ending scene of the 2018 blockbuster film Avengers: Infinity War, the film’s main villain, Thanos, is seen walking out of a small hut to watch the sunset on a vista of mountains and rice paddies, which the film production confirms shows the Banaue Rice Terraces.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the Banaue Rice Terraces that are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the presence of numerous modern structures. 

This distinction was earned by the Batad Rice Terraces and Bangaan Rice Terraces, which can also be found in the province of Ifugao. However, Banaue Rice Terraces is an essential tourist spot in the province.

Batad is a quaint village of fewer than 1500 people and is situated among the Ifugao rice terraces. It is perhaps the best place to view this UNESCO World Heritage Site . The landscape is truly stunning, and the nearby waterfall offers a lush swimming point. 

There are no roads leading to Batad and no motorized vehicles in the village. Get ready for a lot of trekking and hiking because all visitors must get around on foot to visit this remote mountain village. Walking is mostly possible only on the walls of the rice terraces, which are wide enough for one person to pass at a time.

Nowadays, visitors can find a number of hostels and guest houses in the small village catering to travelers, most of which overlook the scenic rice terraces. For those who have limited time, it’s possible to visit Batad as a day trip from Banaue. 

4. Sagada  

The province has long been popular with international backpackers seeking a remote destination off the beaten path because of the variety of tourist spots in Sagada .

A typical Sagada day tour includes trekking, exploring both caves and waterfalls, spelunking, bonfires, picnics, rappelling, visiting historical sites, nature hikes, and participating in tribal celebrations. 

In recent years, the town of Sagada has shot to fame among local weekend warriors because of a popular local romantic comedy filmed there.

Sagada has beautiful natural wonders which are now frequented by travelers, including Sumaguing and Lumiang Caves, Bomod-ok and Bokong Falls, Echo Valley, Kiltepan Tower, Underground River, Lake Danum, Pongas Falls, Mount Ampacao and Marlboro Mountain.

5. kalinga    .

Kalinga is a landlocked province that borders Mountain Province to the south, Abra to the west, Isabela to the east, Cagayan to the northeast, and Apayao to the north.

Once part of a larger province called Kalinga-Apayao, the two split in 1995 for local government to better service the respective needs of the various indigenous peoples in the area.

The province is a land of natural charm and beauty with a variety of natural attractions, from mountains and caves to rustic villages and rice terraces. A land of living waters, Kalinga is rich in waterfalls and rivers that snake around villages. 

A top draw in Kalinga for modern travelers is the remote village of Buscalan, where adventurous travelers trek to get traditional tribal tattoos by Apo Whang-Od , who is known as the oldest mambabatok. She is part of the Butbut people of the larger Kalinga ethnic group.

Some of the more well-known places in Kalinga include Sleeping Beauty in Tinglayan, Kabunyan Natural Dam and Pasil River, the Preserved Tributary Falls and Forest and Saltan River in Balbalan, the Capitol Provincial Park and Chico River in Tabuk. The Pasil, Saltan, and Chico Rivers are the premier whitewater rafting places in the region.

These rivers not only offer excitement but also a glimpse of the cultural history of the Kalinga people.
