When you right-click on any web page in Safari on Mac, it doesn't reveal the Show Page Source and Inspect Element buttons. To see these, you need to enable the Develop menu---we'll show you how to do that.

Once you've enabled the Develop menu, right-clicking a blank space on any website will reveal the Inspect Element and Show Page Source buttons. These allow you to take a look at the source code of any website, which is useful for things like downloading images from websites and debugging code or finding out what it looks like behind any site (for website designers).

You can easily turn on the Develop menu in Safari by following a couple of steps. Open Safari on your Mac and click the "Safari" button in the menu bar.

Next, select "Preferences." Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Command+, (comma). This will also open up Safari preferences.

Go to the "Advanced" tab.

Check the box for "Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar."

Now the Develop menu will appear between Bookmarks and Window at the top.

Apart from being able to view the page source, this will allow you to access developer-focused features, such as disabling JavaScript on any website.

Once you've enabled the Develop menu, there are a couple of ways to view the page source in Safari.

Open any website in Safari and right-click the blank space on the page. Now, select "Show Page Source." You can also get to this menu by using the keyboard shortcut Option+Command+u.

If you're looking for images or other media elements from any web page, Safari makes it easy to find these. In the left-hand pane, you will see various folders such as Images, Fonts, etc. Click the "Images" folder to quickly find the photos that you need.

After selecting an image, you can view its details easily by opening up the details sidebar. The button to open this is located at the top-right of the console, just below the gear icon. You can also open this with the shortcut Option+Command+0.

Click "Resource" at the top of the details sidebar to view details, such as the size of the image and its full URL.

You can change the position of the page source console easily, too. There are two buttons at the top-left of this console, right next to the X button. Click the rectangle icon to move the console to a different side within the browser window.

If you'd like to open the page source console in a separate window, you can click the two-rectangles icon. This will detach the console and open it in a separate window.

To check out the code for any specific element on the page, you can right-click that element and select "Inspect Element." This will take you directly to the code for the element that you selected.

How to use the Safari Develop Menu on a Mac

Control caches, check website performance, and get better website responses with these simple tools..

It may be aimed at developers but most Mac users should spend a little time getting to know Safari’s Develop Menu. This is because it provides tools most Mac users will need from time to time.

What is the Safari Develop Menu?

Because most of the tools offered within the menu are aimed at Web developers, you don’t see Safari Develop Menu by default.

To use it you must enable it in Safari Preferences. Click on the Advanced tab and check the box beside the phrase “Show Develop menu in menu bar” at the bottom of the pane. You will now see a new Menu item appear between your Bookmarks and Windows menus.

Most Mac users won’t need to make use of all the tools it provides, but what follows are some tasks most Mac users may find useful from time-to-time. You can find out more about the other tools it provides here .

You can empty Safari caches

If your Safari browser becomes slow or some websites fail to load it is possible that cache files have become corrupted. These files contain website data such as images and templates and are collected by Safari in an attempt to speed up page load times. Use the ‘Empty Caches’ command to get rid of this data, which may sometimes improve browser performance.

You can swiftly launch websites in different browsers

If you visit a website that doesn’t seem to want to work with Safari because some web designer failed to read the memo that explains how the Internet is built using shared standards, then you can quickly launch that site using another browser you may have installed on your Mac. Just choose ‘Open Page With’ and select the alternate browser you would like to use.

You can pretend to be using a different browser

It’s quite useful to be able to open a stubborn page in an alternate browser, but you can also try to convince websites that you are already using a different browser using Safari Develop Menu.

Select ‘User Agent’ and you will see a drop down menu listing a range of alternate desktop and mobile browsers including Safari, Internet Explorer, FireFox and Chrome.

Select one of these and Safari will try to convince the website you are trying to visit that it is one of these alternate browses by sending a different user agent.

(The user agent is a string of text your browser sends that lets the site know which browser you are using). This doesn’t always work but you’ll often find sites that claim not to support Safari actually do, once you use this trick.

You can figure out why some sites suck system resources

If you’ve ever visited a website that is poorly engineered with lots of orphaned code or what not then you may have seen that site impact your whole web browser. Eventually you need to restart it. That’s not such a big deal but it is annoying.

If you think you have come across such a site you can get the evidence you need:

• Just visit the site and choose Start Timeline Recording.
• Hit refresh and you’ll see a visual real time representation of what happens when you try to load that website.
• Or use Web Inspector to see all those elements in one place or to identify image/video files on a site.

Just choose ‘Enter Responsive Design Mode’ and you can take a look at how the site you are on looks on different Apple devices.

One more thing

Safari also boasts a hidden debug menu. You access this using a Terminal script. It provides a range of useful commands, including the capacity to ‘Reset your Top Sites’, ‘Synch your iCloud History’ and to see all the resources used by any website you happen to be one. • Select Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Show Develop menu in menu bar .
• To use Develop, go to the Safari menu and select Develop , between Bookmarks and Window.

This article explains how to display and use the Develop menu in your Safari (versions 8 through 12) web browser.

Before you can use the Develop menu, you must first make the hidden menu visible. This is an easy task, much easier than revealing the Debug menu that—prior to Safari 4—contained all the commands that are now in the Develop menu. However, don't think that the older Debug menu is no longer relevant; it still exists and contains many useful tools.

Launch Safari from the Dock or the Mac Application folder.

Open Safari's preferences by clicking Safari in the menu bar and selecting Preferences in the drop-down menu.

Click the Advanced tab in the preferences screen.

Select Show Develop menu in menu bar .

Should you ever want to disable the Developer menu, remove the check mark in the Safari > Preferences > Advanced screen.

The Develop menu appears on the Safari menu bar between the Bookmarks and Window menu items. The Develop menu is particularly handy for web developers, but casual users may also find it useful.

Some of the Develop menu items that you're likely to find the most useful include:

• Open Page With : Lets you open the current web page in any browser you have installed on your Mac. If you ever visit a website that doesn't work correctly with Safari, use this command to quickly pop over to the same web page in another browser.
• User Agent : The user agent is a string of text the browser sends to the webserver hosting the web page. If you've ever visited a web page that proclaimed that Safari wasn't supported, this is how the site knew what browser you were using. In most cases, not supported is nonsense, and using this menu item, you can change the user agent to mimic one from a different browser. You may be amazed at how many times a web page that doesn't work suddenly does, just by changing the user agent.
• Empty Caches : Safari keeps a cache of recently accessed sites. The data stored away in this cache includes all the elements of a page, which can be used to quickly render a website when you return to the page. Sometimes the cache can be old or corrupt, causing a web page to display incorrectly. Emptying the cache can fix these issues and can even help speed up Safari .

Most of the remaining menu items are probably more useful to web developers, but if you're interested in how websites are constructed, then the following items may be of interest:

• Show Web Inspector : This opens the Web Inspector at the bottom of the current page. With the Web Inspector, you can examine the elements that went into creating the page.
• Show Page Source : This displays the HTML code of the current page.
• Show Page Resources : This opens the Resource Inspector sidebar in the Web Inspector. It provides an easy way to see which images, scripts, style sheets, and other elements are used on the current page.
• Start Timeline Recording : If you want to see how a web page loads and runs, try the Start Timeline Recording option. This creates a graph showing network activity and how each site element is loaded and used. It makes for an interesting display, but don't forget to turn off the feature by selecting Stop Timeline Recording . Otherwise, you are using your Mac's resources on nonproductive tasks—unless you're a web developer.
• Enter Responsive Design Mode : Another tool for web developers is the built-in simulator that allows you to preview how your web page will look at different screen resolutions or with different devices, such as the iPad or iPhone. Simply load the page you are interested in and select Enter Responsive Design Mode to preview the page. You can try the page rendering using various devices or select a screen resolution to use. When you're done, return to the Develop menu and select Exit Responsive Design Mode .
• Experimental Features : If you're feeling brave, you can try a few of the features that may find their way into future versions of the Safari browser.

With the Develop menu visible, take some time to try out the various menu items. You'll probably end up with a few favorites that you'll use often.

How to enable the hidden Developer menu in Safari on Mac

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to enable Safari’s Develop menu on Mac, and we’ll discuss some of the useful features that are packed within it.

Your Mac’s Safari web browser is loaded with features that aren’t enabled out of the box.

One of them is the hidden Develop menu, which packs a number of features that even regular Safari users could benefit from.

What is Safari’s Develop menu?

Safari has a hidden menu labeled “ Develop ” that is typically disabled from your menu bar by default. On the other hand, it can be easily enabled by the user.

From this menu, which seems to be mostly made for web developers, you can do a variety of things related to web development, but there are also some things that I, as a regular Safari user, find useful on occasion for minor troubleshooting or other reasons.

The features that I think come in handy the most for me are the following:

• Opening the current page with another web browser on your Mac
• Changing the user agent to see how the page loads in another web browser
• Emptying your Safari caches
• Disabling caches, images, styles, JavaScript, extensions, hacks, and more

The ability to see a web page in another web browser makes it so you can easily see why a page isn’t loading correctly for you. Although, in most cases, this is a feature a developer will use to test a website he’s building, it’s also useful for regular users who want to know if the page they’re visiting that isn’t loading properly isn’t compatible with Safari.

When it comes to emptying caches, this is a feature that comes in handy when you have a problem with a website rendering properly. You can empty your cache to make your web browser forget everything it knows about loading a specific website, and hopefully, it can render it correctly the second time around.

Lastly, the ability to disable certain features of your web browsing experience can help drastically with security, data usage, and speed. You can disable images to make a website load quicker or use less data, and you can disable JavaScript and hacks to keep your security top-notch.

There are many other options available in the menu, but I do think these are less useful to regular Safari users than those who actually do web development for a living or as a hobby.

Turn on the Develop menu in Safari

• Launch Safari on your Mac if it’s not already open.
• From the top menu bar, click Safari > Settings or Preferences .
• When the settings pane for Safari opens up, click Advanced from the top.
• Put a checkmark in the Show features for web developers or Show Develop menu in Menu Bar checkbox.

And you’re done! Now, the Develop menu will appear in the Menu Bar whenever you have Safari open on your Mac, and you can open it to reveal all of the options we talked about earlier and more.

• In Apple Maps , users can browse thousands of hikes across national parks in the United States and easily create their own custom walking routes, which they can access offline. Maps users can also save their favorite national park hikes, custom walking routes, and locations to an all-new Places Library and add personal notes about each spot.

• Emergency SOS Live Video allows users to share context through streaming video and recorded media. In the middle of an emergency call, participating emergency dispatchers can send a request for a user to share live video or media from the user’s camera roll over a secure connection, making it easier and faster to get help.
• The Home app introduces guest access, providing users with easy ways to grant guests control of select smart home accessories, set schedules for when guests can access the home, and more. For an effortless home entry experience, hands-free unlock with home keys leverages Ultra Wideband technology to allow users to instantly open supported entry locks as soon as they are six feet away from their door. CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA  Apple today previewed iOS 18 , a major release that features more customization options, the biggest redesign ever of the Photos app, new ways for users to manage their inbox in Mail, Messages over satellite, and so much more. Users will be able to arrange apps and widgets in any open space on the Home Screen, customize the buttons at the bottom of the Lock Screen, and quickly access more controls in Control Center. Photo libraries are automatically organized in a new single view in Photos, and helpful new collections keep favorites easily accessible. Mail simplifies the inbox by sorting email into categories using on-device intelligence, and all-new text effects come to iMessage. Powered by the same groundbreaking technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, users can now communicate over satellite in the Messages app when a cellular or Wi-Fi connection isn’t available. 1

iOS 18 also introduces Apple Intelligence , the personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that’s incredibly useful and relevant. 2 Built with privacy from the ground up, Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context, to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks.

iPhone users have new ways to customize the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Center. Users can now arrange apps and widgets in any open space on the Home Screen, including placing them right above the dock for easy access or perfectly framing a wallpaper. App icons and widgets can take on a new look with a dark or tinted effect, and users can make them appear larger to create the experience that is perfect for them.

Control Center has been redesigned to provide easier access to many of the things users do every day, and it gets new levels of customization and flexibility. The redesign delivers quick access to new groups of a user’s most-utilized controls, such as media playback, Home controls, and connectivity, as well as the ability to easily swipe between each. Users can now add controls from supported third-party apps into Control Center to quickly unlock a vehicle or jump right into capturing content for social media — all from one place. The new controls gallery displays the full set of available options, and users can customize how the controls are laid out, including adjusting them to the ideal size and creating entirely new groups.

For the first time, users can now switch the controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen, including choosing from options available in the controls gallery or removing them entirely. With the Action button available on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, users can quickly invoke controls available in the gallery.

Photos receives its biggest-ever redesign to help users easily find and relive special moments. A simplified, single view displays a familiar grid, and new collections help users browse by themes without having to organize content into albums. Plus, collections can be pinned to keep favorites easily accessible. A new carousel view presents highlights that update each day and feature favorite people, pets, places, and more. Autoplaying content throughout the app brings libraries to life, so past moments can be enjoyed while browsing. Because each user’s photo library is unique, the app is customizable, so users can organize collections, pin collections to access frequently, and include what’s most important to them in the carousel view.

iMessage receives all-new text effects that bring conversations to life by amplifying any letter, word, phrase, or emoji with dynamic, animated appearances. Users can better express tone by adding formatting like bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough. Tapbacks expand to include any emoji or sticker, and now users can compose a message and schedule to send it at a later time.

When messaging contacts who do not have an Apple device, the Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging compared to SMS and MMS.

iOS 18 introduces Messages via satellite for the times when cellular and Wi-Fi connections aren’t available. Powered by the same groundbreaking technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, Messages via satellite automatically prompts users to connect to their nearest satellite right from the Messages app to send and receive texts, emoji, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS. 3 With Dynamic Island, users always know when they are connected to a satellite. Because iMessage was built to protect user privacy, iMessages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted.

Later this year, Mail will introduce new ways for users to manage their inbox and stay up to date. On-device categorization organizes and sorts incoming email into Primary for personal and time-sensitive emails, Transactions for confirmations and receipts, Updates for news and social notifications, and Promotions for marketing emails and coupons. Mail also features a new digest view that pulls together all of the relevant emails from a business, allowing users to quickly scan for what’s important in the moment.

Safari, the world’s fastest browser, 4 now offers an even easier way to discover information on the web with Highlights and a redesigned Reader experience. Using machine learning, Safari can surface key information about a webpage. For example, users can review a summary to get the gist of an article; quickly see the location of a restaurant, hotel, or landmark; or listen to an artist’s track right from an article about the song or album. Reader has been redesigned to offer even more ways to enjoy articles without distraction, with a summary and table of contents included for longer articles.

Building on the foundation of Keychain, which was first introduced more than 25 years ago, the new Passwords app makes it easy for users to access their passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes. The app also includes alerts for users regarding common weaknesses, such as passwords that are easily guessed or used multiple times and those that appear in known data leaks.

iOS 18 gives users even more control with tools to manage who can see their apps, how contacts are shared, and how their iPhone connects to accessories.

Locked and hidden apps offer users peace of mind that information they want to keep private, such as app notifications and content, will not inadvertently be seen by others. Users can now lock an app; and for additional privacy, they can hide an app, moving it to a locked, hidden apps folder. When an app is locked or hidden, content like messages or emails inside the app are hidden from search, notifications, and other places across the system.

iOS 18 puts users in control by letting them choose to share only specific contacts with an app. In addition, developers now have a way to seamlessly connect third-party accessories with iPhone without letting an app see all the other devices on a user’s network, keeping a user’s devices private and making pairing seamless.

Deeply integrated into iOS 18 and built with privacy from the ground up, Apple Intelligence unlocks new ways for users to enhance their writing and communicate more effectively. With brand-new systemwide Writing Tools built into iOS 18, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

New image capabilities make communication and self-expression even more fun. With Image Playground, users can create playful images in seconds, choosing from three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. Image Playground is easy to use, built right into apps like Messages, and also available in a dedicated app.

Memories in Photos lets users create the stories they want to see just by typing a description. Apple Intelligence will pick out the best photos and videos based on the description, craft a storyline with chapters based on themes identified from the photos, and arrange them into a movie with its own narrative arc. In addition, a new Clean Up tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo — without accidentally altering the subject.

With the power of Apple Intelligence, Siri takes a major step forward, becoming even more natural, contextually relevant, and personal. Users can type to Siri, and switch between text and voice to communicate with Siri in whatever way feels right for the moment.

With Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new standard for privacy in AI, with the ability to flex and scale computational capacity between on-device processing, and larger, server-based models that run on dedicated Apple silicon servers. When requests are routed to Private Cloud Compute, data is not stored or made accessible to Apple and is only used to fulfill the user’s requests, and independent experts can verify this privacy.

Additionally, access to ChatGPT is integrated into Siri and systemwide Writing Tools across Apple’s platforms, allowing users to access its expertise — as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities — without needing to jump between tools.

The developer beta of iOS 18 is available through the Apple Developer Program at developer.apple.com starting today, and a public beta will be available through the Apple Beta Software Program next month at beta.apple.com . iOS 18 will be available this fall as a free software update for iPhone Xs and later. Apple Intelligence will be available in beta on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English, as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia this fall. Apple announces macOS Sequoia with iPhone mirroring and Apple Intelligence

Apple officially announced macOS 15 Sequoia at WWDC 2024 on Monday, with Apple Intelligence, iPhone mirroring, Continuity updates, automatic window tiling — finally — and a cross-platform Passwords app. The developer beta is available today, with public betas in July. The full version releases in fall 2024.

• Apple is putting ChatGPT in Siri for free later this year

Most significantly, macOS Sequoia will include Apple Intelligence , a suite of AI features that work across iPhone, iPad, and iOS. Among the features mentioned at WWDC: Writing Tools, a systemwide feature that can summarize text in emails and other apps and automatically draft replies to emails. Siri will now be able to act for you in apps and pull contextual information based on your personal information — all with voice commands, though you’ll also be able to type commands to Siri. Apple Intelligence will be available “this summer” with the Sequoia beta and requires an M1 or later processor.

The Mac is also getting iPhone mirroring, which lets you access and control your iPhone from your Mac — including audio. You’ll be able to see and respond to phone notifications on the Mac and drag and drop text and images between the two devices. Finally, a non-touchscreen interface for your phone! When using mirroring, your iPhone stays locked and even in StandBy mode.

Apple also updated Safari with a bunch of new features, including Highlights, which uses machine learning to detect and summarize interesting information on the page, and additions to Reader mode, including summaries and tables of contents. It also has Viewer mode for on-page video content, with full playback control and support for Picture in Picture.

The Keychain is getting a major update with a new Passwords app that can store many new types of account credentials, including Wi-Fi passwords, passkeys, verification codes, and shared passwords. It’ll be available on iOS, iPad, Mac, and visionOS and syncs to Windows using iCloud for Windows.

Apple is finally bringing automatic window tiling to MacOS, potentially sherlocking a bunch of utilities we never should have needed in the first place.

Gaming isn’t off Apple’s radar, either. In addition to bringing the beloved Resident Evil series, including Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil: Biohazard, Control , and the next World of Warcraft expansion, The War Within , to macOS Sequoia, the company is releasing the second version of its Game Porting Toolkit . Apple says it’s added some highly requested features from game developers that will make it easier for them to port games to macOS, iPhone, and iPad.

macOS Sequoia is compatible with all Macs running Apple Silicon, as well as some Intel-based ones. The list includes the 2017 iMac Pro, 2018 Mac Mini and MacBook Pro, and the 2019 Mac Pro and iMac, which coincides with the list of Intel-based Macs with the T2 security chip . Apple Silicon or the T2 chip are required for iPhone mirroring.

Here’s how to install the iOS 18 beta

The  iOS 18 beta  is officially here for developers (for free). Like last year, it’s super simple to install the software thanks to a toggle in your iPhone settings. Follow along for how to install iOS 18 beta, as well as some tips and tricks.

iOS 18 comes with lots of new features and changes including upgraded Home Screen customization, an all-new Control Center, a Passwords app, overhauled Photos app, enhancements to Messages, Mail, Safari, and much more.

While the iOS 18 developer beta is free for anyone, it’s not designed to be run on your main iPhone as there will be bugs and quirks. And don’t forget to backup your iPhone to a Mac or PC before installing the iOS 18 beta.

For now, the developer beta is the only iOS 18 version available. The first iOS 18 public beta will arrive in July.

How to install iOS 18 beta – developer

• A paid Apple Developer account is no longer needed – but you may need to sign in with your Apple ID at  developer.apple.com  if you haven’t before
• Make a  fresh backup  of your iPhone or iPad – important in case you want or need to downgrade to iOS 17 (Apple recommends doing a Mac or PC backup)
• Launch the  Settings app  on your iPhone or iPad (running iOS 16.4 or later)
• Tap  General  >  Software Update
• Choose the  Beta Updates  button (it may take a moment to appear)
• Now choose  iOS 18 Developer Beta
• If you need to change your Apple ID associated with the beta, you can tap that at the bottom
• Choose  Back  when done
• Look for  iOS 18 Developer Beta  to appear, choose  Download and Install

If you’re not seeing the option to turn on beta updates or iOS 18 appear:

• Try quitting and relaunching the Settings app
• Double check you’re running iOS 16.4 or later (if not you’ll need to update before getting the in-Settings beta option)
• Sign in with your Apple ID at  developer.apple.com  for free then try the above steps again

Apple has announced iOS 18, the next major version of system software for iPhone, with a host of new features, design updates, and changes. iOS 18 brings all new customization options for home screen icons including Dark Mode icons with color tinting, the ability to place icons and widgets anywhere on the Home Screen, a customizable Control Center, AI features called Apple Intelligence that can help with both writing and summarizing text, a dedicated Passwords app, new Messages features like any Emoji tapback, a redesigned Photos app, and much more.

iOS 18 debuted at WWDC 2024, alongside MacOS Sequoia , iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, and visionOS 2.

Home Screen Customizations

iOS 18 includes some notable Home Screen customization options, including the ability to place icons or widgets anywhere you want on the Home Screen.

There’s also new Dark Mode icons:

And there’s even an icon color tinting effect, so you can make all your icons and widgets have a color hue if you’d like.

These new customization options for icons and widgets can make the Home Screen more unique and custom than ever before.

Control Center Redesign

Control Center, which includes a mishmash of many useful features that you want quick access to from anywhere on iPhone, is now more customizable than ever before.

Additionally, there’s now Control Center support for third party apps so they can add icons into Control Center too.

And you can now have multiple pages of icons and toggles on Control Center, giving you instant access to a potentially overwhelming amount of buttons, toggles, and doodads that are sure to improve you iPhone experience.

Standalone Passwords App

The Passwords Settings area that stores all of your iCloud Keychain and login information, accounts, and passwords, is now in a dedicated Passwords app, making it easier to manage and access your login information and account details.

The Passwords app also comes to iPadOS 18 and MacOS Sequoia.

Photos App Improvements & Redesign

The Photos app has received a significant redesign that aims to help users to easily find photos. There’s also a new collections feature that groups photos by theme and aims to make it easy to browse through photos.

Photos app also gains new touchup tools like Clean Up, which allows you to easily remove distracting elements from a photo (like someone you don’t want to be included in a picture).

Messages Gains New Formatting Options, Emoji Tapbacks, Scheduling

The Messages app has gained some new features as well, including formatting options for text to make words bold, underlined, small, big, explode, bloom, ripple, and more.

You can also now tapback any message with any Emoji.

Perhaps the most useful new feature in Messages is the ability to schedule messages, without having to jump through a bunch of hoops with other apps. With scheduling, you can easily send a message at a particular date and time of your choosing, for things like birthdays, holidays, or whatever else you’d like to message at a specified time or date.

Apple Intelligence AI

iOS 18 includes tons of new Apple Intelligence features, which is what Apple is calling their AI initiatives. With Apple Intelligence, you’ll gain writing tools to help you rewrite text in different tones like friendly or professional, summarize text, proofread, and much more. You’ll also have the ability to create images with an Image Playground feature.

The Apple Intelligence AI toolkit is available anywhere you can type on the iPhone, including Pages, Mail, Notes, and third party apps.

These tools should be familiar to anyone who has been using ChatGPT and similar tools from Microsoft Edge, Bing, and ChatGPT.

Safari Updates with AI

Safari now has some handy new AI assisted features that allow you to quickly summarize web pages.

Reader Mode in Safari is also improved with summaries and table of contents automatically generated.

Many More iOS 18 Features>/h3> There are many other features in iOS 18 for iPhone as well, including the ability to lock apps behind Face ID, and a new ability to hide apps on your device. You’ll also be able to change the icons on the lock screen, type to Siri easier than ever, have access to national park hiking trails through Maps, gaming enhancements with Game Mode, and much more. iPadOS 18 has most of the same features, plus a Calculator app

iPadOS 18 was also announced at WWDC 2024, and it includes basically all of the new features from iOS 18 for iPhone, but as iPadOS 18 on iPad.

An incredible new feature that is unique to iPadOS 18 is the inclusion of a new Calculator app, which has been fourteen years in the making since the debut of iPad, and so you’ll no longer have to rely on Spotlight to be your iPad Calculator .

iPadOS 18 also includes new features related to Apple Pencil and drawing and writing tools.

When will iOS 18 be available?

iOS 18 was announced at WWDC 2024, and the developer beta is available right away.

Public beta users will be able to download iOS 18 public beta in July.

The final version of iOS 18 will launch on iPhone in the fall.

Hew APPLE, how about brining back vibrate on silent mode when one gets a phone call? How primitive can you get?

iOS 18 looks like a mild facelift for dark mode users but what is there really?

MacOS Sequoia didn’t get the dark mode facelift and that is too bad, I guess we have to wait for MacOS Tenderloin to get that amazing feature.

So iOS 18 is only so-so. MacOS Sequoia lets you see your iPhone screen on your Mac screen so you can use your iPhone on your Mac. tvOS 18 lets you watch more TV.

But iPadOS 18….

iPadOS 18 is WOW! I can’t believe how innovative! Good thing the iPad now has the M4 chip, the most powerful chip Apple makes, so that it can run that Calculator application. You might have thought the M4 chip would be put on iPad to do something like run MacOS but why would they do that when you can run Calculator applications?

This is the kind of Silicon Valley tech innovation that comes once in a lifetime. My first digital calculator was on a Macintosh SE, and 74 years later it’s on the iPad now!

I call for Apple to rename iPadOS to CalculatorOS! Give it an M67 processor and have it use Calculator application only! $3000 stock base model with 2GB Storage, or $90,000 with 128GB Storage! Calculator Magic Keyboard for an additional $900! Calculator Pro Pencil is a deal at only $399!

You might think the Calculator application could run on simpler hardware, but you’d be wrong.

I am genuinely pleased to see Calculator finally making it to iPadOS, but this comment is hilarious! :-)

Yay for the iPad getting a calculator application and message scheduling for Messages!

The rest… I anticipate ignoring or opting out of. But those two… yay!

The visual changes look neat. Like putting a new coat of shiny lipstick on old bacon that we’ve all grown accustomed to eating! Delicious.

But I don’t see many new features.

Messages scheduling, ok. It would be smart if you could use the Apple AI to automatically text people “Happy Birthday” I guess? But uh, ok?

Hiking trails in Maps? Who is that for? I don’t think we need more people getting lost in hiking trails.

Photos gets some retouching tools that third party apps have done for years, ok that’s new.

Left out here maybe because it’s not for everyone is the Messages Over Satellite feature, which is helpful for when you’re orbiting the earth and need to use a satellite to send a message? Wait what how does this work and why can’t everyone use it?

Control Center. Why do I want multiple pages of fumbling toggles in Control Center? I do not. That seems overengineered, taking something simple and making it complicated. This reminds me of them taking a simple feature like Do Not Disturb and turning it into a wildly complex and over-engineereed ToasterFridgeDeluxePlusCarMicrowaveSkidoo that I still can’t figure out how to make work to simply hush my iPhone.

Is anyone else confused by where Apple spends their money? They’re paying ChatGPT instead of creating their own AI LLM? What the !?!?

Here's every MacOS 15 Sequoia feature announced at WWDC 2024

Apple previewed MacOS 15 Sequoia today at WWDC , showing off an overhaul of the operating system for MacBooks and iMacs that centers around AI integration. This year's WWDC was undoubtedly all about AI. It's unsurprising since Apple took its time to discuss its plans for AI integration across its products. Now that it's here, we have a better picture of its approach, which looks good.

New AI features are coming to Siri, Safari, and a new Continuity app that streamlines the use of your iPhone and Mac. But it's not all AI. There are also quite a bit of quality-of-life design improvements and security updates launching with MacOS 15.

Following today's preview, beta testing of MacOS 15 starts immediately and will continue over the next few months, with a launch to the general public in the fall of 2024. That'll be here sooner than you think, so let's take a look at the biggest features just announced. 

1. Apple Intelligence

The past few months have been jam-packed with flashy announcements from OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, but Apple's had the final word, reclaiming the acronym with the clever naming of its new Apple Intelligence . So what is it? It refers to the overarching AI ecosystem that will be present in MacOS 15, as well as the iPhone and iPad; the engine powering all the new AI functionality across all its apps.

The Apple Intelligence ecosystem is fueled by a partnership with OpenAI , allowing Apple to leverage the massive LLM already cultivated by OpenAI's huge success with ChatGPT, along with the company's goals of taking on Google by entering the search market.

Apple's approach to AI is markedly different from that of its competitors, however. Instead of positioning the new AI features as integral aspects of their products, Apple allows users to opt in, making immediate adoption a choice. The AI features are also clearly defined as being in beta, underscoring their nature as works-in-progress. 

This lets Apple disengage from the chaotic rat race to a degree, positioning itself as the careful, more ethical actor when it comes to AI, particularly in light of  recent debilitating security concerns  from Microsoft's Recall feature, which is delaying the release of a host of its new Copilot+ PCs .

2. Continuity

The new Continuity app links your Mac to your iPhone in a fully comprehensive way, essentially allowing you to remote into your iPhone directly through your laptop. The demo at WWDC showed iPhone mirroring to pull up the iPhone's home screen, interacting with multiple apps using the laptop's trackpad and keyboard.

The app also streamlines your devices by bringing your iPhone's notifications straight to the Mac, allowing you to pull up the corresponding app onto the laptop. If you're worried about privacy while using your phone on your laptop, your phone's screen actually remains locked and turned off, even while you're using the phone remotely. Alternatively, the new standby mode on the iPhone displays a host of at-a-glance (but un-interactable) data like a clock and calendar while you're using the Continuity app on the Mac. 

3. Siri 2.0

Apple has played the long game when it comes to its virtual assistant, Siri. As one of the very first to be adopted by the public, Siri has been around for a very long time -- since 2011 -- although it's taken a back seat to flashier AI assistants the past few years. Apple's technology in this area offers a strong foundation to expand upon, however, and the new and improved Siri is full of new AI features.

During the WWDC keynote, Apple showed off Siri's new look as an ever-present AI assistant integrated into every thread of the UI, not a standalone app. Siri will have access to ChatGPT's LLM, allowing the AI to be functionally ready to communicate in a more natural context, following up with previous conversations and messages instead of providing full context in every single prompt. 

The new Siri also comes with on-screen awareness, allowing the AI to respond to what you're looking at on the screen without requiring the user to provide specific context with each prompt. This also allows Siri to take in-app actions in a way that wasn't possible before. In MacOS Sequoia, Siri's integration with OpenAI's LLM propels the virtual assistant to the top players in the field alongside Chat GPT-4o and Google's Gemini . 

4. AI-fueled productivity apps

Apple Intelligence has been integrated across all of the big productivity apps in MacOS 15. Here's a breakdown of some of the most noteworthy features.

• Keynote, Numbers, and Pages: The core suite of Apple's productivity apps are seeing a host of AI-infused upgrades on both the creativity end and performance. Keynote will allow users to tap AI to auto-generate slides, and Pages will come with new text-generation prompts fueled by AI.   
• Mail:  Apple Intelligence will play a more active role in finding specific emails, responding, deleting, and organizing your inbox, from summarizing emails to suggesting replies and rewrites. One of the more useful features includes the summary feature, which taps the AI to pull out summaries of an email in the inbox view, as opposed to just showing the first few lines of an email, which often aren't useful for summarizing what an email is about. 
• Calendar: Besides integration with the Reminders app, the new Calendar app will support AI.
• Photos: AI-based photo editing features in the Photos app allow users to make touch-ups, remove backgrounds, and do editing instantaneously. Additionally, searching for specific photos and videos using natural language will bring up images of specific people or events. 
• Notes: Voice functionality is coming to the Notes app, with the ability to add voice memos directly embedded into your notes. AI will also support audio transcription and transcripts of audio recordings. You can record and transcribe audio, and when your recording is finished, the AI will create a summary on its own. 

5. New and improved Safari

Safari will see a host of improvements powered by AI functionality, including an "Intelligent Search" option that harnesses on-device AI to summarize search results in the browser in Mac OS Sequoia. Following along with Apple's emphasis on security, Safari updates include intelligent tracking prevention that restricts what websites can track, while also emphasizing the efficiency and speed of the Safari app.

Apple demoed Safari's machine learning capability to automatically detect relevant information on a webpage, including things like quick links, directions, and quick summaries with logistical information like phone numbers and addresses. 

6. Standalone Passwords app

Aligning with Apple's positioning of its AI features as secure and trustworthy, it's releasing an all-new and updated Passwords app in MacOS 15 that consolidates and streamlines your password across your Apple devices.

This standalone app is an extension of the existing iCloud Keychain, and seeks to simplify password storage by employing Face ID and Touch ID alongside character-string passwords. Much of it is designed to work automatically and seamlessly in an effort to solve what is a huge UX headache that everyone has experienced at one point or another.

Apple wants to create a "unified gaming platform" across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with high resolution and improved ray tracing. Apple emphasized the sheer number of new titles available on the Apple silicon chips, and they look better than ever. Frostpunk 2, Control, and UbiSoft include ray tracing and Assasin's Creed, coming to Apple devices later this year.
