Ireland is a great place to visit at any time of year, but it’s especially magical at Christmas. The Emerald Isle is known for its dramatic scenery and its wild and windswept landscapes, but Ireland is also a country where people know how to have a good time. It’s cold at Christmas, but that’s all the more reason for a mulled wine, a good roaring fire, and some enthusiastic singing and dancing.

The Irish know how to party and their Christmas celebrations are big and bright. In the small towns of Ireland, things might not be quite as large as in the cities, but the communities here don’t do things in halves. With Santa on his way, streets trimmed with fairy lights, and lots of authentic Christmas food and drink, it’s in the towns that Christmas is celebrated in a traditional way, but with a modern twist. Here are five Christmas towns to visit in Ireland .

Christmas in Ireland – 6 Magical Towns To Visit

The small town of Cashel in Tipperary loves Christmas. Every year, the Cashel Arts Festival — which arranges activities and festivals throughout the year — organizes and presents “Christmas on the Plaza.” In the center of town, the Christmas lights are switched on, Santa arrives, and from December 11 onwards Christmas markets take over the plaza, offering arts and crafts for sale and some good mulled wine.

If you get even a dusting of snow, which is likely, the town looks magical, and the nearby Rock of Cashel is an incredibly atmospheric place to visit at this time of year. The Rock is a cluster of medieval buildings including an abbey, a cathedral, and a chapel. Set atop a rocky dome of a hill, the rock, and the buildings look incredible. It’s a great place to go for some quiet contemplation amid the busy days of Christmas.

Christmas tree in Cashel Palace

Where To Stay In Cashel

At nearby Cashel Palace , a Relais & Chateaux property, Christmas begins on November 21 with Christmas trees and traditional decorations adorning every corner of the public rooms. You can choose to stay for one night at any time over Christmas and this Palladian manor will take you on a journey to a Christmas time of good food , wine, and a cozy Christmas atmosphere. Choose to stay for 3 nights over the Christmas period and you can enjoy a visit from Santa, Christmas dinners, champagne receptions, and hiking and yoga if you need to work off all that amazing food.

The entrance to Wexford Winterland

2. Wexford Town

Every December, Wexford Town transforms itself into Wexford Winterland , a land of Christmas lights, Christmas trees, and Santa Claus. From December 1 through 23, Santa arrives with Mrs. Claus and their elves for the town’s North Pole Experience. When you enter the Winterland, fir trees line the way and Santa greets you, welcoming you in for what is a unique Christmas town event.

The great thing about Winterland in Wexford is how it’s been designed to give each family a dedicated experience. There’s no line of children to see Santa at the North Pole Experience; instead, each family can take their time and enjoy the experience as a “pod.” Mrs. Claus will make reindeer food (cookies) with you and you can take yours home to feed the reindeer on Christmas Eve (or eat them right away).

Then it’s time to have a chat with Santa. You can tell him what you want for Christmas — no matter how old you are — and listen to his Christmassy jokes. He’ll give you a golden ticket, which you can take into the North Star Cinema for a special cozy Christmas movie. There’s a lot more going on in the town over December, with parades, lights, and Christmassy food and drink, as Wexford is completely transformed into a Christmas town.

Accessibility And Accommodation

Because this event is carried out on a per-family basis, you can tailor your experience for sound levels and lighting. Anyone with any sensory sensitivity can ask for their experience to be done in softer tones and with lower lighting. The experience is completely accessible to wheelchairs and anyone with different levels of mobility. If you do have any particular needs, you can explain in the comments section of your booking and arrangements will be made. The organizers go to great lengths here so that everyone can enjoy the Winterland.

The coastal town of Tramore in county Waterford hosts a very special light festival every December. The Enchanted Garden Winter Light Festival is held in the town’s Japanese Gardens, which are beautiful to visit at any time of year. At Christmas though, they’re even more beautiful as these gardens become a sea of fairy lights and magical light displays. Lanterns hang from the trees and the Christmas fairy wanders through the gardens, stopping to say hello to visitors and to the little fairies who live in the trees.

The permanent features of the gardens, like the water fountains, look even more magical with the lights reflecting from them, and projections of snowflakes flutter over the walls of the tea house. Being a coastal town, this Hallmark Christmas movie town in Ireland gets busy in the high season with tourists and locals enjoying the beach, and in winter a slower pace arrives and it’s much quieter.

Where To Stay In Tramore

O’Shea’s is a traditional Irish pub with rooms, located by the sea in Tramore. For an authentic experience, eat in the restaurant, drink in the bar, and sleep in one of the guest rooms with the sea as your lullaby. The pub is perfectly positioned for guests to explore the town and feel cozy amid the dark winter evenings.

4. Wicklow Town

Wicklow Town holds a Christmas market every December that’s so much more than just another Christmas market. If you’re expecting a few stalls with local produce and arts and crafts, yes, you will find pretty market stalls lit with fairy lights selling everything the local area has to offer, but the Wicklow Christmas Market is more like a Christmas festival than just a market.

There’s a fun fair next to the markets and a Santa express ride that takes visitors all around the town, to the specially erected “North Pole.” When the train gets there, Santa and Mrs. Claus are there to greet you. While Wicklow might not have reindeer, they do have alpacas, and visitors can pet them, take photos with them, and feed them. This year the town has a new addition to its Christmas lineup.

The arrival of the eco-ice skating rink means visitors and locals can get out on the ice and enjoy skating while Christmas songs play, all while knowing this is an environmentally friendly ice rink. If you’re wondering what an eco-ice rink is, it’s a surface that looks and feels like ice but doesn’t require the large amounts of water and power needed to keep a regular ice rink going. Wicklow Town Christmas market has to be one of the most environmentally conscious Christmas events you’ll come across.

Where To Stay In Wicklow Town

Built in 1702 and the birthplace of Captain Robert Halpin, who laid the first cross-Atlantic cable, The Bridge Tavern puts you right in the middle of the action for the Christmas markets. It’s a historic inn with a bar full of character and original features and modern rooms that have been thoughtfully designed. The story of this inn is everywhere you look in the bar and it’s a great place to stay for soaking up the atmosphere of this charming Irish village . I love the grand “doorway” in the bar for staff to go from behind the bar to out into the bar, which is a kind of polished wood pagoda with stained glass on each side.

Christmas at Killarney Town Center

5. Killarney

You might already be familiar with the song “Christmas in Killarney,” now also a stage show, but neither of these come close to an actual Christmas in Killarney . Perhaps in part because of the popularity of the song, Killarney has become synonymous with Christmas, and this town has taken that accolade and run with it.

Most people who come here for Christmas time come for the parade, which is an impressive procession of characters, Santa on various sleighs, puppets, costumes, and lanterns. The parade ends with the town’s light switch on, which is a big event with a party atmosphere. After this the town is in full Christmas swing and markets spring up, carol singers burst into song in the streets, and every shop in town trims up with trees and lights. When “Killarney on Ice” kicks off, anyone can enjoy a skate around the rink while Christmas tunes play.

Where To Stay In Killarney

Coolclogher House sleeps 14 people in its seven bedrooms and is the perfect place for a cozy family Christmas getaway. Set within a private walled estate, this is an old manor house with a lot of luxurious character. The house is close to Ross Castle and is 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the town. Note, that the house can only be booked for a week at a time; no short breaks and no weekends. But there’s so much to do around Killarney that you’ll easily need a week to experience it all.

Dublin City comes alive during the Christmas period. Central to all the celebrations on Christmas Eve is Grafton Street with famous buskers like Bono and Oscar-winning Glen Hansard who perform for charity while Dubliners are doing their Christmas shopping rounds.

On Christmas Morning head to Dublin’s Forty Foot swimming spot for the traditional Christmas Day swim, the most famous spot of that kind in Ireland. Then there’s Wren’s Day on December 26 when groups of wrenboys dressed up in strawsuits go from door to door, singing, dancing, and collecting donations. Lend them a handful of coins to ward off bad luck.

To mark the end of the Christmas period, there’s “Women’s Christmas” on January 6 when the women of the house traditionally get a rest after looking after everyone during the festive period and the men take on the household responsibilities.

Where To Stay In Dublin

The five-star Merrion Hotel where Old-world civility and elegance meet with WiFi and the 21st century is impossibly atmospheric at Christmastime. With Merrion’s hospitality and superior service, its crackling open fire and rich Georgian drawing rooms, deep sofas, and flowing champagne you will celebrate Christmas in style.

Christmas in Ireland lasts almost a month. The festive season starts on the 8th of December or the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and finishes on the 6th of January, also known as Little Christmas or Women’s Christmas. Little Christmas marks the official end of the festive season.

Coming home

The most important thing about Christmas in Ireland isn’t the presents, the traditions or even the food. It’s the chance for friends and family to come together. And this is where the Irish pub  comes into its own.

Over the festive season, the pub is pretty much the centre of small villages, towns and even cities, and is usually bursting with reuniting friends and families wrapping hands around hot whiskeys and cosying up beside the fire. It’s off the charts for Christmas spirit.

Ireland in December: Top 10 Must-Dos & Travel Tips

Affiliate Disclaimer

Are you looking for a winter getaway? Ireland is a great option – especially in December. The weather is mild, the scenery is gorgeous, and there are plenty of fun things to do from holiday activities to popular attractions. Here is all of the important information you need to know, plus some of the best things to see and do , for visiting Ireland in December.

When I was studying abroad in Dublin , my family joined me for Christmas in Ireland – and it was incredible! We took a road trip around Ireland in December and saw many of the best sites and holiday attractions.

Is It Worth Going to Ireland in Winter?

Some people might say that there’s no better time to visit Ireland than in the middle of winter! There’s something special about experiencing a country in the off-season, and Ireland’s holiday spirit and lively culture are especially contagious during the winter months. My family and I spent December in Ireland a few years back – and it’s still one of our most memorable family trips to date!

Temple Bar in the snow

While there’s no denying that Ireland is a beautiful country, winter can be a tough time to travel in general. Flights might get canceled due to storms, roads can be icy and dangerous, and accommodation can be expensive and hard to come by. That being said, there are still plenty of reasons to consider a winter trip to Ireland.

The festive season is a wonderful time to visit Europe, with Christmas markets and traditional music in many of the cities and towns . And if you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights , it’ll be an experience you’ll never forget.

So while winter might not be the ideal time for everyone, it’s definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a truly unique Irish experience.

Is December a Good Time to Visit Ireland?

December is a great time to visit Ireland! The weather is cool and the days are shorter, making it the perfect time to cozy up by the fire with a cup of Irish coffee or a pint of Guinness.

There are also plenty of festive events to enjoy, from Christmas markets to New Year’s Eve parties. Additionally, summer is the most popular time to visit Ireland, so you won’t be fighting nearly as many crowds and tourists during the winter months.

What Is December Like in Ireland?

December in Ireland is a month of contrasts. On the one hand, the days are short (the sun sets around 4pm) and the weather is cold . On the other hand, there is an infectious holiday cheer in the air and decorations can be seen everywhere.

In some ways, December in Ireland feels like one long holiday party. There are always events going on to keep people entertained and out of the cold. Plus, people tend to spend a lot of time in warm Irish pubs, enjoying good food and drink in each other’s company.

Top TIPS for Visiting Ireland in December

If you’re planning on visiting Ireland in December, here are a few tips to make the most of your trip.

First, be sure to pack warm clothes and bring layers when out exploring. The weather can change quickly in Ireland , so it’s best to be prepared with a warmer jacket and umbrella at all times, even if it’s sunny when you leave!

Don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes too, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking.

Make sure to book your accommodation well in advance , as Ireland is still a popular destination during the holiday season. At the very least, book your stay for during and around Christmas and the New Year, as those are the first dates to book up for winter travel.

hotel decorated for Christmas

Rent a car while in Ireland and book in advance! If you plan to stay only in the bigger cities, it’s not necessary to rent a car as you can easily get by on foot or with taxis .

However, the true magic of Ireland lies in the countryside and smaller towns, and most of those places are only accessible (or much easier to get to) by driving a car.

Rental cars also book up quickly during the holiday season, so make sure to secure yours ahead of time to ensure you’re getting the best deal! I always use DiscoverCars because they compare prices and deals across the leading car companies in Ireland to find the BEST deals.

Contrary to popular belief, it does occasionally snow in Ireland. While the country rarely sees any snow at all, there are an average of 10-15 snow days per year . However, these snowfalls are generally light, with depths only reaching 1-2cms. As a result, the snow usually melts quickly .

What to Pack for Visiting Ireland in December

Winter can be a magical time to visit Ireland. The days may be shorter, but the country is decorated with twinkling lights and festive cheer. If you’re planning a trip, here are a few things to pack to make sure you have a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

First, make sure to pack some warm clothing . Although December is technically considered fairly mild in terms of weather, temperatures can still drop below freezing, so it’s important to be prepared. A scarf, hat, and gloves are essential, and you might also want to pack a coat or jacket.

Secondly, don’t forget your rain gear. Ireland is known for its bad weather, and even if it’s not raining when you arrive, there’s a good chance it will at some point during your trip. An umbrella and raincoat will help you stay dry.

Finally, don’t forget to pack some comfortable (and ideally waterproof) walking shoes. Even if you’re not planning on doing any major hiking, you’ll probably find yourself doing a lot of walking around town , oftentimes on cobblestone streets. So make sure your shoes are up for the task.

These are the absolute essentials in my Ireland wardrobe:

* Raincoat – I like this one because it is thin, so you can throw it on even when it’s warmer rain, or add it as a layer over your sweater/jacket. You can also fold it up into itself in one of the pockets for super compact packing.

* Rain Boots – Comfortable, stylish, and perfect for rain or shine. These are actually a winter staple for me, even when I’m home in California. I love them!

What to Wear in Ireland in the Winter

If you’re planning a trip to Ireland in the winter, you’ll want to dress in layers to stay warm and account for the changes in temperature throughout the days and at night. Pants or jeans are a good option, as well as skirts and dresses with leggings underneath. Long sleeve shirts will also help keep you warm, and you’ll likely want to have an extra sweater along with a jacket for warmth.

2. Spend Some Time Museum-Hopping

One activity that is perfect for winter to stay indoors is to go museum-hopping. There are some great museums in the Irish cities of Dublin, Galway , Cork , and Belfast. For a fun and educational way to spend your time in Ireland, be sure to add some museum-hopping to your itinerary.

⭐ BEST Museum in Ireland: Titanic Belfast ⭐

Titanic Museum in Belfast

This museum absolutely BLEW MY MIND. It might actually be my favorite museum in the WORLD, let alone Ireland. If the story and history of the Titanic fascinate you, this museum needs to be at the top of your must-see list!

The museum is excellent in the delivery of its exhibits and information through interactive displays, audiovisual presentations, and an exhilarating Shipyard Ride. In addition, the entire museum, including the architecture and even the grounds around the museum, has Easter eggs all around it that are tied to the Titanic. It’s remarkable!

3. Enjoy the Festive Holiday-Related Activities Across Ireland

Ireland is a wonderful place to celebrate the holidays, there is an endless choice of festive activities. For starters, Christmas markets are popular across the country for locals and visitors alike. You can find everything from traditional Irish gifts to delicious holiday treats.

The Christmas markets usually start opening up in mid-to-late November, and a few stay open through early January.

Attend live caroling concerts such as Carols by Candlelight at Christ Church Cathedral . Or, Dublin Zoo puts on a light show with more than 1 million lights.

Belfast Christmas Markets

The wide variety of entertainment and stalls located in Eyre Square in Galway City center make it a must-see during the holidays. The Light Up Galway Festival and Elf Town are some of the most popular attractions. (Read More: Best Things to Do in Galway in December) .

GLOW – A Cork Christmas Celebration (from the end of November to early January) is not to be missed either. With more than 50,000 lights, it’s one of the largest displays in Ireland. The festival also features a large Ferris Wheel, live outdoor music and comedy, and plenty of delicious food!

4. Spend Christmas in an Irish Castle

For a truly unforgettable Christmas, why not spend the holiday in an Irish castle? You’ll be treated like royalty, with a scrumptious Christmas day feast and all the trimmings. The castle will be beautifully decorated for the season, and Santa himself may even drop by with some special presents for the kids.

My family and I spent Christmas in Kilronan Castle a few years back, and it was a magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience!

The 18th-century medieval castle is set on a gorgeous property right next to a lake and forest to explore. It includes luxury spa facilities, comfortable and well-decorated rooms, as well as fine dining and afternoon tea experiences.

5. Try to Catch the Northern Lights in Ireland

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are a natural light display that is usually visible in the night sky in the Northern Hemisphere. Although they can be seen in many parts of the world, including Alaska, Canada, and Scandinavia, they are notoriously difficult to predict and often elusive. However, if you happen to be in the right place at the right time, you may be able to catch a glimpse of them.

Ireland is one of those places. While they are not as common here as in other parts of Europe , it is possible to see them. The best place to see them is from County Donegal , according to Tourism Ireland.

However, conditions need to be just right in order for them to be visible. Clear skies and a dark night are essential , so your best bet is to plan a trip during the winter months. With a little luck, you may be rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

6. Go Hiking in December

December is an ideal time to go hiking in Ireland . The weather is cool and crisp but not too cold either, perfect for a long walk in the countryside. And with Christmas just around the corner, there’s no need to worry about crowds of tourists clogging up the popular hiking trails. Instead, you can enjoy the peace and quiet of nature, soaking in the stunning views of the Irish landscape.

The Gap of Dunloe and Ring of Kerry are both great options for popular hiking trails, while Carrauntoohil (the tallest mountain peak in the Republic of Ireland) is perfect for those who are looking for a more challenging trek.

Or, if you’re visiting Dublin, why not take a hike around the Wicklow Mountains to see the historic Glendalough Monastic Settlements?

Taking a road trip around Ireland is the perfect way to see the country at your own pace. You can visit all the top sites, including the Cliffs of Moher and the Ring of Kerry , and you’ll have the flexibility to stop and enjoy the scenery whenever you want.

Plus, driving through the Irish countryside is an experience in itself, and you’re sure to fall in love with the rolling green hills and quaint villages.

Typically most people start in Dublin, where they can find plenty of availability and deals on rental cars. After exploring the city for a bit, head west to Galway where you can begin exploring the Wild Atlantic Way.

Head south from there, stopping by the Cliffs of Moher and the quaint town of Doolin. Spend some time exploring the Dingle Peninsula before heading over to Killarney for the Ring of Kerry. Finish your road trip by enjoying the city of Cork .

8. Go Pub Hopping Across Ireland

Ireland is well known for its pubs, and there’s no better way to experience the country’s legendary hospitality than by pub hopping across the Emerald Isle. Escaping the cold of winter with a hefty drink and warm meal is a great excuse for spending time in the pubs. Many Irish pubs will host frequent live traditional Irish music and dancing nights , or you can find pubs playing sports games or full of board games for you and your friends and family to enjoy!

So if you are wondering where exactly you should head in Ireland during the wintertime, then we are here to help you with just that. Here are the best winter destinations in Ireland including the capital city Dublin and much more.

Galway City

Galway is a stellar holiday destination all year round but heading to Eyre Square around Christmas time is a truly special experience. The festive market smack bang in the middle of the city offers up festive live entertainment as well as stalls selling everything from gifts to festive treats.

Meanwhile, many of the pubs in Galway will be decked out in their best Christmas decorations, making for a super festive pint when you visit.

Mourne Mountains

If stunning nature is what you're after this winter, then you will find that in the Mourne Mountains in Co Down. These mountains make up one of the most popular destinations in Ireland for hikers all year round, and winter is no exception.

The snowcapped mountains are a sight for sore eyes and something you will thoroughly enjoy as long as you are well-wrapped up and the conditions are safe for hiking.

Co Donegal is an otherwordly county in the northwest corner of the island of Ireland and is perhaps the most beautiful county of them all. While most people probably opt to visit Dongeal in summer, it remains a beautiful destination full of dramatic natural beauty in the winter months.

Wicklow Mountains and Glendalough

Similarly, the Wicklow Mountains National Park and in particular, Glendalough , is a stunning place in Winter. With bare trees and views overlooking the valley, Glendalough looks rather enchanting in Winter.

The Galway Christmas Markets are widely regarded as one of the best Christmas markets in Ireland. And, now entering their 13th year, they’re officially the longest-running !

This year’s market sounds like it’ll be contained to Eyre Square (it was spread across the city previously) and it sees the stalls, the beer tents, the massive ferris wheel and more return.

Date wise, the Galway Christmas Markets will run from 18:00 on Friday, November 10th and will run until Friday, December 22nd 2023 ( read all about them ).

2. The Belfast Christmas Markets: Nov 18th – Dec 22nd

Belfast Christmas markets 2023

The Belfast Christmas Markets is another of the more popular Christmas market Ireland has to offer, and it’s been on the go for over 12 years now !

Each year, Belfast’s City Hall is transformed into a traditional German-style Christmas market , packed to the brim with 90 masterfully handcrafted wooden chalets.

At the markets here, expect to find a food court with cuisines from 32+ nationalities, heaps of family activities and attractions, like the Santa Train, buzzy beer tents and plenty more.

The organisers have confirmed that the Belfast Christmas Markets will run from Saturday, November 18th and will run until Friday, December 22nd 2023 ( read all about them ).

3. Waterford Winterval: Nov 17th – Dec 23rd

Waterford Winterval is another of the more popular Christmas markets in Ireland, and it’s a great one to team up with a spin along the Waterford Greenway.

Now entering its 11th year , Winterval has gone from strength to strength and last year was ‘Its biggest and most festive programme yet’ .

Visitors here can expect everything from the big traditional market , the ice skating rink and the Illuminates feature along with the Winterval Train, the now-iconic 32 metre high Waterford Eye and more.

The organisers have confirmed that Winterval will begin on Friday, November 17th and it will run until Saturday, December 23rd 2023 ( read about Winterval here ).

4. Cork Christmas Markets: Nov 24th – Jan 7th

The Cork Christmas Markets (previous called ‘Glow’) are one of several Christmas markets in Ireland that tend to get overlooked by many looking to visit a festive event in Ireland.

Which is a shame, as Cork at Christmas packs a punch! Every year, the city’s already buzzy atmosphere is given an added boost with the arrival of the festive period.

This year, there is an entirely new experience coming to Cork City, called ‘Corkmas’. The ferris wheel will still be in place, but there’s now be a ‘Solas’ light show in Emmet Square. There’s also the excellent Maria Market with plenty on this year .

The Cork Christmas Market 2023 dates have now been confirmed. They will run on set dates from November 24th until January 7th, 2023 .

5. Christmas Markets in Dublin: Various dates

dublin Christmas markets

Photos by The Irish Road Trip

The Dublin Christmas Markets have been very hit and miss over the last 7 or so years, with many long-running markets now no longer in operation.

The Dublin Castle Christmas market is one of the only festive markets that has run consistently over the last couple of years and it’s expected to be back this year from December 8th to December 21st (still TBC) .

One we have a lot of hope for is the Mistletown Market (TBC) which is set, if it finally launches, set to be the largest Christmas market in Ireland.

We’re also hoping to see the return of the Dun Laoghaire Christmas Market this year but, like the ones above, it’s still TBC.

6. The Kilkenny Christmas Markets: Starts Nov 25th

The  Kilkenny Christmas market is one of the more overlooked Christmas markets in Ireland , and it’s well worth checking out.

Last year, the market took place every weekend, starting at 10am and running until 6pm. These are your usual festive stall markets, with local vendors selling everything from food to tasty bits and bobs.

There’s also numerous events taking place around the markets, like open air movie nights , live music, DJ sets and more.

It has been confirmed that the Kilkenny Christmas Market 2023 will kick-start on Saturday, November 25th .

7. The Wicklow Christmas Market: Nov 18th – Dec 17th

Dublin declared one of the best places in the world to spend Christmas

Dublin is among the most magical places to visit during the holiday season and we’ll be honest we agree.

The Parade of Lights on Grafton Street, in Dublin, at Christmas.

Dublin is simply magical at Christmas time.

Every Irish person knows that there’s nowhere better in the world to celebrate Christmas than at home!

There’s magic in the air, fairy lights, good cheer, and most importantly good banter!

But now it’s official as Dublin was named as one of the top places in the world to spend Christmas, in 2018.

The international flower vendors Bloom and Wild made their decree by choosing “15 Of The Best Cities To Visit At Christmas."

  • Glen Hansard, U2, Shane MacGowan to join forces for Late Late Show busking special
  • Binge these Irish shows and movies on Netflix this Christmas
  • Christmas Message to the Diaspora from President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins

They made their decision looking at “flight costs during the holidays, the price of a restaurant meal on Christmas Day, average annual snowfall, and how soon the Christmas lights are switched on.”

Here’s what they have to say about Ireland’s capital at Christmas...

Dublin at Christmas (Ireland's Content Pool)

Dublin at Christmas (Ireland's Content Pool)

“If your idea of Christmas heaven is wrapping up warm for an epic pub crawl across endless cobbled streets, then Dublin is the place for you."

"The iconic Irish city will welcome the festive season from 19th November in 2018, hosting the highly-anticipated Procession of Light that brings everyone together for a memorable celebration meets spectacle.”

Anyone who’s spent time on Grafton Street at Christmas will agree with the old song that describes the street as “a wonderland, there’s magic in the air”. The Christmas lights make the street especially beautiful this time of year as do the Christmas carolers and shop window displays.

Wicklow St at Christmas (Ireland's Content Pool)

Wicklow St at Christmas (Ireland's Content Pool)

As well as the great love of Christmas tradition in Ireland you can feel the good cheer in the air. As a small island of emigrants, Christmas is a time when those who can come home to visit loved ones – family and friends.

The sense of goodwill is brilliant and traditions like Glen Hansard, Danny O’Reilly, and Roisin O and even Bono busking for charity on Grafton Street on Christmas even just add that little bit of magic fairy dust to the holiday season.

Of course, we’re biased but if you ever get the chance to visit Dublin at Christmas, we guarantee it’ll make your spirits soar!

12 Great Places In Ireland You Should Visit This Christmas

12 Great Places In Ireland You Should Visit This Christmas

By Paul O Dwyer on December 13, 2019

Looking for a reason to get off the couch this Christmas and get out and about in Ireland?  Are you planning a trip to the Emerald Isle this winter and are wondering what to do? Then I’ve got you covered.

I’ve got something for everyone. If you are a city lover I’ll show you where to do a spot of shopping or see the Christmas lights. If you’d like to do something a bit different, I’ll show you where to find cosy fires, Christmas music, hot drinks and maybe even meet Santa. If you enjoy fresh air, peace and quiet I’ve included places to walk, hike or cycle in nature.

Play A Christmas Tune At Shandon Bells In Cork

Built almost 300 years ago and standing 36 meters tall, Shandon Bells is one of Cork’s most iconic buildings.

You'll find out all about 'the goldie fish' and 'the four-faced liar' when you visit (you’ll have to go to find out); but for me, the best part is that you can play the bells. It’s pretty easy too, even I could do it! They have a folder of some well-known tunes that you can try. A Christmas song from Shandon Bells sounds pretty special to me.

Entry for adults is 5 euro and there are discounts available for students, seniors and families. During the winter months, Shandon Bells & Tower are open to the public 11 - 3 Monday to Saturday and 11.30 - 3 on Sunday.

Last year they hosted a Christmas Carol Service so keep an eye on the website for a similar event this year. Find out more at shandonbells.ie .

Warm Up By The Open Turf Fire At Sean’s Bar in Athlone

Sean’s Bar is officially Ireland’s oldest bar (and possibly the oldest in the world). Coins dating back to 900AD were found in the bar during renovations in the 1970s. If you haven't visited it yet you need to add it to your Irish bucket list.

Warm your feet by the open turf fire, for a cosy visit on a cold winter's night, on the banks of the Shannon. Sip their very own whiskey and enjoy live music Thursdays to Sunday. For an extra festive music treat, I can’t recommend enough their Christmas Carol night on the 15th of December. Find out more on seansbar.ie

Step Into History At Kilkenny Castle

Whether you visit for the beautiful Victorian style country house or the 50 acres of parklands, Kilkenny Castle will not disappoint.

During the winter months, visits to the castle are by guided tour only. Tours last 45 minutes excluding the Tea Room and the Butler Gallery. The Tea Room is situated in the castle’s kitchen. It has the original cooking range, plates and copper pots. It is the perfect place for you to relax and grab a bite to eat before heading out to explore the parklands. Whether you are an art enthusiast or not, do not forget to allow time to visit the Butler Gallery. I’m not, but I really loved it here.

A stroll around the parklands is the perfect way to end your visit feeling refreshed. Take in the banks of the River Nore and enjoy the natural colours of winter.

If you haven’t had enough of Kilkenny, check out some of the many events that feature in Yulefest 2019. Whether you are after Christmas markets, workshops or music there is something for everybody at Yulefest 2019. I’m excited for Mayor’s Annual Christmas Concert on 11 th Decemeber.

Kilkenny Castle is open from 9.30 - 4.30 during the winter months. During this period the park is open from 9.00 until 4.00.

Hear The Tragic And Romantic Story Behind Kylemore Abbey

There’s more to Kylemore Abbey than you see on Instagram.

It’s situated on huge grounds that include a 6-acre Victorian walled garden, a neo-gothic church, a café with lots of homemade foods and you can buy some of your Christmas presents in the gift shop. You get to wander freely in the abbey itself but if you want to know more about the history of the place there are talks by the guides throughout the day. Don’t forget to check out the Christmas Themed History Tours where you’ll find out about how Christmas was celebrated in the abbey throughout its history.

Visit Mitchell Henry's library, the dining room and the saloon hall to learn about life in the abbey during the second half of the eighteenth century.

The Victorian walled gardens date back to the late 1800s but fell into disrepair. Luckily for you and me, they were renovated in 1995 and the gardens reopened to the public in 2000. The award winning gardens are a huge hit with garden lovers from all over the world.

A short walk along the lake brings you to the beautiful neo-gothic church. Be sure to visit on a Saturday or Sunday at 2.30 when you can catch a live music performance.

The Tea House by the Walled Garden is closed for winter but it’s ok, you won't be disappointed by Mitchell's Cafe. It’s got a wide selection of homemade meals and snacks. I particularly love their homemade soups and breads.

Whether you want to grab some last-minute gifts or treat yourself, you’ve got to go to the gift shop. Kylemore Abbey produces many of their own foods including Christmas pudding, ham glaze, cranberry sauce and mincemeat for your mince pies. You’ll be all set for Christmas dinner. If you’re fully sorted with food for Christmas, the Benedictine nuns also make a beautiful selection of soaps and shea butter.

Kylemore Abbey is open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm every day during the Winter.

Take In The Sea Air On Salthill Promenade

Take a break from the hectic festivities in Galway City and take a walk, jog or even cycle on Salthill Prom. It’s just 3 kilometres from Spanish Arch in Galway but it's the perfect escape from the city. It will take you a 30-minute brisk walk or a 10-minute cycle mostly to get there.

The prom itself is 2 kilometres long. You’ll get to take in the beach and beautiful views of Galway Bay. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Burren in County Clare.

When you reach the end it is tradition to 'kick the wall' before turning to go back. It could bring you good luck.

On your return trip take a break and enjoy views of the bay from the comfort of one of the many cafés, restaurants and bars in Salthill.

Oh and don't forget to check out the iconic Blackrock Diving Tower. If you're feeling brave (or crazy) you can take a dip. Apparently, swimming takes place all year round.

Get In The Christmas Spirit At Bunratty Castle

What a magical place for you to enjoy some Christmas fun. Choose from the Christmas Banquet, Breakfast with Santa and Ice Skating.

There are a few dates left to share breakfast with Santa Claus and his elves. It promises to be a very special occasion for the kids (and adults too). Don’t worry if you miss out on breakfast, there are lots of other Christmas experiences to be had, like ice staking, as well as puppet and magic shows on the traditional street.

Set in the castle’s medieval banquet hall, you can enjoy a three course ‘festive feast’ while the excellent Bunratty Castle entertainers play some classic Christmas tunes. I’m excited for the mulled wine. Hurry though, spaces are selling out fast.

While all of the Christmas activities are happening, the castle and folk park are open as normal. Bunratty Castle & Folk Park is a day out for all the family. When you visit Bunratty Folk Park, you step back in time and get to experience rural Irish life from the 1800s. The park is situated on a 26-acre site and it includes a village street, a pet farm and a walled garden to name but a few.

Find out more about Christmas at Bunratty here .

Cycle The Waterford Greenway

There’s nothing like getting on a bike and cycling through the countryside for getting away from all the shopping, spending and crowds.

Waterford Greenway is an off road 46-kilometre tarmac track built on an old railway line. It runs from Dungarvan to the edge of Waterford City. If you don’t have a bike you can rent one in Dungarvan or Waterford.

Don’t worry if you think you’re not fit enough to do the whole trail there and back. There’s a shuttle bus that will pick you up at the end.

The route itself is stunning. There’s lots of stunning scenery with views of Dungarvan Bay, the Comeragh Mountains and the River Suir. Keep an eye out for the viaducts. My favourite part is cycling through the tunnel.

You’ll need to allow most of the day if you plan on doing the full 46 km. If you're looking for something a little shorter you can start your cycle from any of the access points along the way.

If you're bringing the kids, The Santa Express on the Waterford & Suir Valley Railway is a must. Listen to Christmas music, meet Santa and grab a hot chocolate on the trip through the Magic Wood. The train runs from Kilmeaden to Waterford, which is about 8 kilometres.

You’ll need to book in advance at the Waterford & Suir Valley Railway .

Waterford Greenway

Walk Off Your Christmas Dinner In Glendalough

You probably know Glendalough for its 30 meter high round tower, its monastic settlement and beautiful lakes but it’s also a great place for a winter hike.

Situated in the 20,000 hectare Wicklow Mountains National Park it’s a glacial valley. I recommend you take a hike on one of the 9 waymarked walking trails in the valley. You can choose a short 45-minute walk or a full-on 4-hour hike (and anything in between).

The trails are graded from easy to hill walk. If you’re not an experienced hill walker, I recommend sticking to the ‘easy’, ‘moderate’ and ramble’ trails this time.

I like to go for a feed and a hot drink in one of the local hotels or eateries afterwards as a reward for my efforts.

Glendalough

Board An Emigrant Ship At The Ulster American Folk Park

At the Ulster American Folk Park, you will learn about the life of the Irish who emigrated to the US in the 1800s. On your journey through the park, you’ll meet characters who tell you stories and give you samples of authentic food from the times (some of it tastes quite interesting…).

The journey through the park takes you from the Old World of Ulster to the New World of the United States. You’ll see farmhouses and village streets before you get to board the recreated emigration ship - The Brig Union.

In December you can meet Santa, gather around the turf fire with all of the family and enjoy the Christmas songs and treats. Be sure to book in advance.

They recommend allowing 2 - 3 hours to explore, but I think you need longer. I’d plan the best part of the day to get the most from the Ulster American Folk Park.

Opens Tuesday to Friday 10 - 4 and Saturday & Sunday 11 - 4 during low season.

Ulster American Folk Park

Get The Perfect Selfie At Ben Bulben Forest Walk

It’s all over Instagram but it’s even better in real life. The 5.5 km Ben Bulben Forest Walk takes around 1 ½ hours to complete and you’ll get stunning views of Ben Bulben, Donegal Bay and even Slieve League.

It is possible to hike Ben Bulben but I’m not recommending it at this time of year. Plus, if you’re at the top, you can’t appreciate the view of Ben Bulben, right?

Here is a handy   map from Coillte . To find out more about the Ben Bulben Forest Walk visit   Sligowalks.ie .

Explore The Castle & Gardens At Glenveagh National Park

Glenveagh National Park is Ireland’s second largest national park and is situated in the heart of the Derryveagh mountains. The stunning castle is perfectly located overlooking Lough Veagh. The gardens at Glenveagh are considered some of the best in Ireland. They are sure to be a highlight for any visitor and a dream for any gardening enthusiast.

The Glenveagh Castle Tea Rooms are open daily. I love their homemade scone with a cup of hot tea after a few hours out walking.

Glenveagh National Park has 6 walking trails ranging from 2 to 8 kilometres in distance. The routes are a variety of looped and out and back, ranging in difficulty and terrain type, taking between 30 and 90 minutes. You’ll find a map and further information in the visitor centre to help you choose the right trail for you.

Learn more about the park on www.glenveaghnationalpark.ie

Glenveagh National Park

Spot Santa’s Reindeer at Doneraile Wildlife Park

With 500,000 visitors in 2016, I’m not sure if Doneraile Wildlife Park can be described as a hidden gem anymore. The 166 hectare wildlife park was Ireland’s fourth most visited free attraction in 2016.

It has a variety of walking routes with beautiful gardens and trees. The River Awbeg flows through the park and supplies some lovely manmade lakes and ponds. It’s the perfect place to get some fresh air and burn off those mince pies.

The best part? There is a deer farm in the park. It’s a great opportunity for the kids to get a close up look at Rudolph and friends before they set off with Santa Clause this Christmas.

Speaking of Santa, he will be at Doneraile Court every weekend in December. Grab a hot drink and a snack in The Tea Rooms to warm up after exploring the park. Check out Santa’s Wonderland here .

With a stoic castle, wild coastline and great "craic" (fun, entertainment and good company), Donegal checks off many items on an Ireland vacation bucket list. Donegal visitors can see the 15th-century Donegal Castle, grab a pint of Guinness in a traditional Irish bar dating back to the 1700s or revel in one of the town's high-spirited festivals. Meanwhile, Donegal's northwest coast location makes it ideal for driving along the scenic Donegal Bay to the Slieve League cliffs – which are nearly three times as tall as the Cliffs of Moher – or hopping to islands known for their exceptional preservation of the Gaelic language and culture.

Though Dublin is Ireland's hub for politics, culture and music, its approachable and relaxed culture sets it apart from most European capitals. Before making a beeline for the Guinness Storehouse, consider a walking tour to take in popular attractions like Trinity College (and its swoon-worthy library), the 13th-century Dublin Castle and the always exuberant Temple Bar district. Save time to take in the arts, too: Dublin is home to the national theater of Ireland and plenty of festivals and museums dedicated to Irish literary greats. Plus, Dublin offers easy access  to alluring destinations like the fishing village of Howth and Wicklow Mountains National Park.

Located along the country's famous Wild Atlantic Way, the Dingle Peninsula consistently stuns with its otherworldly scenery (think: evergreen cliffs, craggy coastlines and vibrant blue waters). Begin your journey by driving along Slea Head Drive, a scenic route known for its photo-worthy vistas. If you'd rather see the peninsula on foot, head down the Dingle Way, a network of trails that spans the entire peninsula. Or, take a ferry to the Blasket Islands to explore jaw-dropping cliffs, look for wildlife like sheep and dolphins, and visit pristine beaches without rubbing elbows with other tourists.

For the quintessential Irish countryside experience, travel to Killarney. The town is surrounded by evergreen hills and valley on all sides, affording plenty of opportunities to become one with nature. Visitors gravitate toward Killarney National Park, which features Ireland's highest mountain range, MacGillycuddy's Reeks. If you aren't much of a hiker, you can still enjoy the scenic lakes or visit one of Killarney's centuries-old churches or castles.

The Cliffs of Moher are Ireland's most popular tourist attraction, welcoming more than 1 million visitors each year. In fact, the cliffs are so popular that cities situated more than 100 miles away often offer full-day bus tours to the attraction. Once you lay eyes on this sight, you'll understand why so many people travel hours to gaze at it. Measuring more than 8 miles long and 700 feet tall, the cliffs provide breathtaking views of Galway Bay, parts of Connemara National Park and the Aran Islands on a clear day.

This peninsula in County Kerry is best known for featuring the world-famous Ring of Kerry, a 111-mile scenic drive that circles around the entire peninsula. Along the way, visitors will enjoy truly spectacular scenery both on the coast and inland. Can't-miss stops include Ladies View, Rossbeigh Strand, Derrynane beach and the Gap of Dunloe. Travelers should also save time for visiting some of the peninsula's picturesque small towns and castles, which are both developed and abandoned. Be sure to stay at least one night here for a glimpse of the stars in Ireland's first dark sky reserve.

Surrounded by a looming mountain, sandy beaches and charming countryside (dubbed "Yeats Country" after the county's famed poet), Sligo offers something for everyone. If you're up for an adventure, hike the loop around the iconic Benbulben mountain, take a surf lesson in Strandhill or watch the big-wave pros at Mullaghmore Head. Meanwhile, more leisurely travelers can visit Sligo town's popular sites like The Model art center and Sligo Abbey, or take a coastal drive to fine estates like the Lissadell House and Gardens (open seasonally). Just make time for a few stops along the Sligo Food Trail on your way.

After Dublin, Cork is Ireland's largest city. Located at the southern end of the country, this city of more than 200,000 residents is famous for being home to Blarney Castle and its Blarney Stone. According to local legend, the stone will grant you the gift of eloquence, if you dare kiss it. Cork is also where you'll find 18th- and 19th-century churches, the Cork City Gaol (a former prison converted into a museum) and lush Fitzgerald Park, among other noteworthy attractions. When hunger strikes, explore Cork's English Market, where you'll find everything from meat and fish counters to cafes and bakeries.

Located just 17 miles south of Cork, this enclave on Ireland's southern coast charms visitors with rainbow-hued buildings and a "riviera" vibe. Sailing is central to Kinsale, which hosts several regattas throughout the summer, but other water activities like kayaking and surfing hold equal appeal. Those who prefer to stay on land can visit nearby attractions like the scenic Nohoval Cove and historic Charles Fort. What's more, as one of Ireland's top culinary destinations, Kinsale entices foodies with more than 50 delectable eateries and food-centric celebrations like the Kinsale Gourmet Festival and Kinsale Street Feast.

Galway offers the best of both worlds for travelers. City slickers can revel in Galway's relatively light but palpable bustle, while outdoor lovers can venture outside the city to see many natural attractions, including the Salthill Promenade, Wild Atlantic Way and, farther afield, Burren National Park. If you prefer to stay local, stroll through the lively Latin Quarter, then check out historical attractions like the Spanish Arch and St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church.

Situated in the heart of County Donegal, Glenveagh National Park sets a picturesque scene, complete with a lakeside castle and lush mountains. Here, active sightseers can bask in the unspoiled natural beauty of the Emerald Isle, with nearly 40,000 acres that are completely free to access for hiking, biking, fishing and camping. Highlights include the Derryveagh Mountains, the sweeping valleys of the Poisoned Glen and the rugged shores of Lough Inshagh and Lough Veagh. Situated just northwest of Ireland's border with Northern Ireland, the Inishowen Peninsula is the country's largest peninsula. Its remote location 170 miles northwest of Dublin plus its otherworldly scenery and thatched cottages create a peaceful setting you won't find in Ireland's more tourist-heavy peninsulas. Must-see natural wonders here include Malin Head, Trawbreaga Bay and the Gap of Mamore. Expect awe-inspiring scenery everywhere you turn when you visit this 5,000-acre national park during the warmer months. Connemara National Park is home to the Twelve Bens mountain range, plus woodlands, grasslands, heaths (wild, undeveloped flatlands) and bogs (wetlands) that you can explore via one of several trails. To get a good overview of the park's diverse scenery, hike the Diamond Hill paths and walk the Green Road along Killary Harbour. The latter is where you'll find one of Ireland's few glacial fjords.

Travelers keen on getting a taste of what old Ireland looked and felt like should consider visiting the Aran Islands. Accessible by plane from Connemara or by ferry from Rossaveal, Galway and Doolin on Ireland's western coast, the Aran Islands feature important historical sites, Celtic churches and lots of untouched landscapes (think: the "Banshees of Inisherin," some of which was filmed here). Plus, Gaelic is widely spoken, providing an authentic cultural experience. Though all three islands offer noteworthy sights, plan on spending the bulk of your time on Inis Mór (or Inishmore), where the prehistoric fort of Dún Aonghasa is located.

Kilkenny offers a hearty amount of historical attractions for travelers to explore. This is largely thanks to the town's prior distinction of being the medieval capital of Ireland, a heritage that remains evident today  in the Medieval Mile, Kilkenny's top attraction. Within the Medieval Mile you'll find several interesting sights, such as Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice's Cathedral and the Medieval Mile Museum. This historic part of town is also home to the Smithwick's Experience, where you can learn more about how one of Ireland's most popular ales is brewed.

Those who plan on visiting Cork should save time for a daytrip to Cobh. This charming small town, which sits on an island in Cork Harbor, is known for its past as both a major departure point for Irish emigrating to the U.S. and as the last port of call for the Titanic. Travelers who want to learn more about these key roles in Cobh's history can visit the Cobh Heritage Centre and Titanic Experience Cobh. Before leaving, take a stroll around town to admire Cobh's striking Victorian-era architecture and brightly colored storefronts and homes.

Hi, I was delighted to see Clonkill Christmas Market listed on your site. We had a very successful market last year, our first one back since having to cancel previously due to covid 19. We are planning a great Market for this year and hope that the recent fleadh in Mullingar that brought crowds to the Town, might be returning again and we can entice them to come along for a visit. You are so welcome if you are around and we plan to host this year’s Market on 20th November. Please let me know if you want me to leave any information at all. Kind regards. Vivienne Mulligan, Chairperson, PRO, Clonkill Christmas Market

Hi Vivienne, that’s great news. If there is anything you want me to include in the article, please email me ([email protected]) and I’ll be happy to add it to the piece.

Great article, thank you!! My wife and I are planning our Christmas ’23 trip and I wanted to do Ireland as my family is from County Cork, near Bere Island and this would be a wonderful way to work our way around Ireland!

Thank you and have a very Merry Christmas!!!!

Oh, I am jealous, that would be an amazing thing to do! Thank you, and I hope you, your wife and family have a Merry Christmas too!

Locals Recommend: The Places You Actually Need to See in Ireland

Updated September 17, 2023

We all know that Ireland is full of incredible spots. But what are the places you actually need to visit? (Hint: it ain’t Grafton Street.) With a bit of advice from real Irish locals, we present the coolest places to see in Ireland, from our favorite small towns to the isolated Aran Islands.

The towns of Cobh and Kinsale

Cobh is one of the best places to see in Ireland

When it comes to the best towns to visit in Ireland, well—there are a lot. Literally hundreds . But Cobh and Kinsale should definitely make your list. Why? Both embody everything that makes Irish small towns so joyously cool—houses painted in bright colors, good pubs, fresh seafood, and fewer crowds than popular hubs like Dublin or Belfast.

Plus, Cobh and Kinsale are home to some really rad activities. We’re talking haunted islands , ancient forts, and museums about maritime disasters . Irish towns are full of treasures like that!

Peace Memorials in Northern Ireland

You’ll find a lot of really great stuff to do in Northern Ireland—hello, it’s home to spectacular sights like the Giant’s Causeway —but you can’t leave without exploring the region’s peace memorials. After the Troubles ended in 1998 , Northern Ireland has bloomed, and it does an excellent job of facing its darker days.

In Belfast, graffiti-covered barriers that divided the city, sort of like what’s left of the Berlin Wall. In Derry, wander across the Peace Bridge that spans the River Foyle. Both cities are full of museums and monuments, and plenty of stories.

The Aran Islands

The Aran Islands are among the best places to see in Ireland

The Aran Islands are among Ireland’s coolest spots to visit because they’re isolated and full of windswept Irish charm. If you’re staying in the west of Ireland, one of the greatest things to do in a city like Galway is to hop on a ferry and set sail for the Arans.

There, you’ll find awesome, ancient stone ruins, plenty of good bike trails, and some of the best seafood in the country. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon, but if you want to really immerse yourself in the Aran Islands, it’s also one of the coolest places to stay in Ireland. Talk about a unique trip! You’ll be posting pics of the Islands’ misty beauty for ages.

Pro tip : Want to get off the beaten path in Ireland? Some of our favorites include the Blasket Islands near Dingle, Achill Island in County Mayo, and Dursey Island in County Cork—which is accessible by cable car !

Dublin (but not all of it)

Listen, we adore Dublin. It’s one of our favorite cities in Ireland. The problem is that Dublin is well-loved by both locals and tourists, so it can be hard to know what to do, and what to avoid doing. Among the millions of things to do in Dublin, a few definitely are worth a stop—don’t leave town without visiting the Little Museum of Dublin, searching for wild deer in Phoenix Park, or downing at least one Guinness at a local pub.

The Dingle Peninsula ( all of it)

The Dingle Peninsula is one of the best places to see in Ireland

Oh, let us count the reasons why Dingle is one of the best places to visit in Ireland. One, it’s home to a friendly dolphin. Two, you can snack on some of Ireland’s tastiest ice cream . Three, its streets are filled with scores of colorful pubs—which makes pub-hopping a breeze.

And that’s just the start of the list of all the amazing things to do in Dingle!

We should also mention the region’s unbeatable nature—whether you want to drive the Slea Head route or walk Dingle Way, you’ll have plenty of exploration options—gorgeous harbor views, and very cool ancient history. How many times in life can you visit a structure that dates back to the 6th century?

At least one Irish castle

Scaling the ramparts of an Irish castle is one of the most essential things to do in Ireland and, luckily, you’ll have plenty of choices. Like… almost too many. Locals agree—you should definitely check out one of their country’s great castles:

  • Rock of Cashel : One of the coolest places to see in Ireland, the Rock of Cashel looms over the surrounding countryside atop a fist of limestone crags and grass. Parts of this castle date back to 1100, which makes wandering its medieval halls a real thrill (even if you used to fall asleep in history class).
  • Bunratty Castle : Bunratty Castle is gorgeous (despite being sacked four times!) but the castle’s frequent medieval banquets are the real draw here. Feasting like a king at Bunratty is one of the best things to do in Shannon.
  • Kilkenny Castle : One of the coolest things to do in Kilkenny is to check out its impressive castle. This 12th-century fortress has roots back to Strongbow , one of the first Norman invaders of Ireland. Well-preserved, it feels like wandering through the pages of a fairytale.

Killarney National Park

Killarney National Park is one of the best places to visit in Ireland

Ireland is full of spectacular national parks, but Killarney is one of the most beloved by locals. The Irish Times gushed that although Killarney is well-known, it’s one of Ireland’s best places to spend the day . Why? Ireland’s oldest national park has something for everyone—opportunities to hike and kayak, tons of animals and birds, and even a castle ( Ross Castle , a 15th-century tower on the edge of Lough Leane).

You could spend days exploring the 26,000 acres of the park and still not see it all—which gives visitors and locals plenty of reasons to plan repeat trips.

Cliffs of Moher

You just can’t leave Ireland without visiting the Cliffs of Moher . Touristy or not, the sweeping cliffs, romantic coastline, and stunning Atlantic views are worth a visit. There are tons of great small towns in the area, and locals will have suggestions about what to explore nex t. (We’d recommend hitting up Doolin, which is known for its great pub/music scene.)

Pro tip : Ireland has hundreds of miles of coastline and lots of great cliff views. If you’re looking for somewhere less traveled, one of the best things to do in Cork is to stroll along the Ballycotton Cliffs.

“Who could ask for anything more?” is a famous line from “I Got Rhythm,” a classic tune by George and Ira Gershwin that’s included in the latest show at the Ogunquit Playhouse. It’s not a bad question to ask.

Theater review

WHAT: “Crazy For You”

WHERE: Ogunquit Playhouse, 10 Main St., Ogunquit

REVIEWED: June 16 (matinee); continues through July 13

TICKETS: starting at $40.

CONTACT: 207-646-5511; ogunquitplayhouse.org

You’ve got two solid stars up front, dozens of attractive singers and dancers behind them, and a wealth of both clever and romantic Gershwin songs. And, as if that weren’t enough, the inimitable Sally Struthers comes onstage to fill two comedic roles that supply some of the best laughs in the show.

Chalk it up to a production still coming together, but “Crazy For You” showed a few seams in terms of pacing in its first performance after opening night. But the impeccably performed vintage music and the let’s-put-on-a-show spirit of the book by Ken Ludwig carried the 2½-hour show through for an entertaining afternoon at the venerable summer theater on the southern coast of Maine.

The dynamic Max Clayton sang and danced like a veteran performer who knows where the audience-pleasing theatrical goodies are hidden. His banker character Bobby soon became a faux showbiz master as he falls for a girl and decides to revive her father’s theater in Nevada rather than foreclose on the property.

Clayton’s tap talents are many and were all smoothly executed with whirling flourishes that truly dazzled. His voice sold such long-time Gershwin favorites as “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” the latter accompanied by an impressive chorus of lovely, talented female singer/dancers.

Taylor Aronson plays Bobby’s love interest Polly, adding her own very natural-sounding delivery to such classics as “Someone To Watch Over Me” and “But Not For Me.” Aronson also held her own in romantic song and dance duets with Clayton on such tunes as “Shall We Dance” and “Embraceable You.” Director Angelique Ilo’s take on the show’s original dance moves, choreographed by Susan Stroman, fit the pair well in both upfront showy and more elegantly flowing moments. The 76-year-old Struthers again proved her brilliant comedic timing in scenes with Clayton and Jim Borstelmann, the latter as a companionable British twit. Her double takes and little exclamations were hilarious as were some timeless bits of physical comedy performed by others throughout the show.

Angie Schworer and Peter Kendall got hot and heavy on “Naughty Baby” while a Cowboy Trio and a group of layabout ex-miners spiced up several pieces. Alexandria Van Paris, Delaney Bailey, Jack Doyle and Tony Roach also stood out in secondary roles. All were backed by a jauntily swinging offstage band led by Ken Clifton while some occasional onstage percussion from the players, tapping feet and more, served to bring things forward.

The sets by Adam Koch and costumes by William Ivey Long mix old-style Broadway flash and rustic cowboy folksiness, placing the audience in a world closer to an earlier, 1930s incarnation (The Gershwin brothers’ “Girl Crazy”) on which this award-winning 1992 show was based.

Thanks for joining us for an extremely busy night here in the Politics Hub, including for the final debate between Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer before the general election next Thursday.

You can scroll through the page to catch up with the highlights.

And we'll be back from 6am with all the very latest.

Until then - read all the latest from Sky News below:

By  Tim Baker , political reporter, in Nottingham

One of the more amusing moments of the debate tonight was Robert, who told Rishi Sunak he was a "mediocre" prime minister and said Sir Keir's strings were being pulled by senior members of the Labour Party.

He is brought into the spin room by BBC production staff for journalists to talk to.

He tells us that he is a life-long Conservative voter - but at the moment is undecided.

Robert says he has recorded the debate and will be watching it again when he gets home.

However, he reckons he is leaning towards the Conservatives - believe Sir Keir has an "undeclared agenda".

Daisy Cooper, the deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, has said the UK "deserves so much better" than the leaders' debate held tonight.

Reacting to the clash between Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer, she said: "Tonight the audience spoke for the nation when they asked: is this really the best we've got?

"Our country deserves so much better than what we watched this evening.

"Liberal Democrats are listening to you and fighting hard for the issues that matter to people.

"From the NHS to tackling the cost of living, we want a fair deal for our country.”

A Conservative win would mean "five more years of chaos" and Rishi Sunak has shown tonight "just how out of touch he is", Labour's campaign coordinator has said.

Reacting to the leader's debate, Pat McFadden said Sir Keir Starmer "exposed the Tory manifesto as unfunded".

"Keir Starmer and Labour will return politics to public service, putting country before party in stark contrast to partygate and dodgy COVID contracts," he said.

"On 4 July, we have a chance to turn the page and start to rebuild with Labour."

Tonight was an "important moment" for Rishi Sunak as he put his opponent "on the spot", says our deputy political editor Sam Coates .

Coates says he thinks the prime minister would have been "very happy" with his performance - and adds that some of his aides were even "punching the air" after the debate.

It was a performance Mr Sunak "desperately needed earlier in the campaign", he adds.

He says Mr Sunak had a "clear strategy... to demand answers from Keir Starmer on tax and whether it will go up, on welfare and how you get people off benefits, on 'smashing the gangs' and whether the Rwanda policy is needed..."

Coates says Sir Keir provided a "range" of answers as the prime minister sparred with him.

"Sometimes he had specifics, sometimes he did not," he says.

"That strategy, although executed in a way I think that the Conservative Party tonight is very happy with, has nevertheless been judged not decisively in Keir Starmer or Rishi Sunak's favour," says Coates, referring to the YouGov poll showing there was no winner in the final debate of the election (see 21.38 post).

The final TV clash of the election campaign was an ill-tempered shouting match, at least from Rishi Sunak.

Sir Keir was more measured. More prime ministerial, perhaps?

As he had to as the underdog, Mr Sunak went on the attack from the start until the very end and unveiled a new campaign slogan: "Don't surrender…"

He said it no fewer than 15 times during the 75-minute debate. That’s once every five minutes.

But just like the England-Slovenia Euros match 24 hours earlier, the result was a draw: 50%-50% exactly, according to pollsters YouGov.

At the outset, the PM served notice that he wanted to talk about tax, while Sir Keir wanted to talk about politicians gambling.

As Mr Sunak read out prepared lines, it was a smart ad lib from Sir Keir that won the first round of applause.

"If you listened to people in the audience a bit more you might not be so out of touch," he said, in a familiar Labour attack line.

But the PM was strong and came out on top in exchanges on illegal migrants crossing the Channel.

One of the best moments came when a member of the audience, Robert, asked a devastating question: "Are you two really the best we’ve got to the next prime minister of our great country?"

By the end, the debate closed out as it began - with Mr Sunak shouting over the Labour leader. It wasn't a good look.

And as the debate ended, there was no handshake between the pair, which is unusual for these TV clashes.

At least party leaders pretend to be civilised towards each other usually.

There's clearly no love lost between these two - and it showed.

Darren Jones, shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, is among the Labour representatives in the spin room this evening.

He's asked first about his leaked comments that Labour's target for decarbonising the economy will cost "hundreds of billions" of pounds.

Sir David Davis, who sticks around for this encounter, asks why Mr Jones's party "downgraded" their net zero plans.

"Because you guys crashed the economy," the shadow chief secretary responds.

Sunak 'behaved badly' in debate

On the leader's debate, Mr Jones says Sir Keir Starmer came across as "clearly more prime ministerial" - and adds that he thinks Rishi Sunak behaved "quite badly".

"He didn't answer questions that were put to him and was constantly speaking over Keir and Mishal [Husain, the BBC host]."

He denies Sir Keir's remarks that Mr Sunak is out of touch were "below the belt".

"Rishi Sunak is going around the country telling everyone that they've never had it so good... they crashed the economy, people at home know that because they paid the price for it."

Up to spin for the Conservatives is ex-minister David Davis.

"This debate was very important," he says, noting it's the final one before the public decides who to back.

He was a fan of Rishi Sunak's new attack line - the repeated pleas to voters not to "surrender" their borders or finances to Labour.

"[Sunak has] faced a once-in-a-generation issue in terms of a war in Europe, he's faced a once-in-a-century issue in terms of a pandemic, and he did it with an economy from which we'd inherited massive debts in the past," he adds.

After all that, "he managed to get inflation down from 11% to 2% in six months".

"The public will look at this and say: 'We've got a difficult world, all sorts of disruptions at home and abroad, who will deal with it the best of these two'?" he says.

"I know who I'll be voting for."

With minutes to go, a group of smiling Labour spinners arrived to watch the final summations.

Darren Jones - under fire for his comments about the cost of going for net zero, revealed in The Telegraph - tells Sky News it's clear who was more prime ministerial during the debate.

He and the other Starmer backers then burst away to the various cameras and microphones to talk up their leader.

Meanwhile, serious faced Conservatives enter from the other end of the room to give their verdicts.

Tory candidate - and former minister - David Davis says he thinks Rishi Sunak's repetition of the "surrender" phrase will have gone down well.

This just in from YouGov - which has found there was no winner in tonight's BBC leaders' debate, the last of the general election campaign.

Asked who performed best - the results came in exactly 50/50.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates says there will likely be disappointment in the Conservative ranks over this result.

"Neck-and-neck polling doesn't seem to me like it's going to change the race," he says.

"I think there's a really interesting question about Rishi Sunak's tactics, in my view, watching that, he was effective in highlighting the choice - the policy difference between the two men.

"I wonder looking at that poll whether that's what the public are really looking for."

However, there were distinctions when viewers were asked who performed better on certain topics.

Rishi Sunak came out on top on immigration and tax, while Sir Keir Starmer performed better on welfare and the UK's relationship with the EU.

Labour also just edged ahead on the economy - with 47% saying they performed better, and 43% backing the Tories.
