While some people prefer to camp in tents, others will go to great lengths to bring their everyday comforts on their camping trip. Plus, enjoying nature doesn’t necessarily mean you have to endure the mosquitoes trying to suck your blood out, the humid air, and the uneven ground! This doesn’t include the luggage you have to pack and unpack or the high costs of renting a camping space.

Table of Contents

One of the best ways to do this is by buying a travel trailer. Simply said, small travel trailers can provide all of the fun and excitement of camping without sacrificing all of your modern amenities. It makes it possible to enjoy the beauty of nature on your own terms. Travel trailers are small enough to be towed by an SUV yet large enough to make your camping trip comfortable and less rustic.

In the past, travel trailers have been large and cumbersome. They were often heavy and bulky, making them hard to tow or maneuver. Today’s travel trailers are lighter in weight , more aerodynamic, and easier to operate. They are an excellent choice for any camping trip because they offer so much versatility. Small trailers can be towed by most modern vehicles, so you won’t have to buy an extra-large SUV just to tow your camper.

Advantages of Small Travel Trailers

There are many great advantages to owning a small travel trailer. Here are just a few of the most important ones:

Smaller and Easier to Tow

Small travel trailers are much easier to tow than larger RVs or campers. It is much more common for people to own small travel trailers for this reason alone. While some people opt to tow a large camper or RV behind their big truck, it usually isn’t feasible for those with smaller trucks. In that case, they might as well save some money and buy a cheaper travel trailer instead.

Smaller Means Cheaper

As stated above, small travel trailers are much easier to tow than larger RVs or campers. This makes them cheaper to both buy and maintain. It also means that they require less power to pull. That is an additional benefit that you won’t get with a larger camper trailer.

Moreover, small travel trailers are cheaper to store. If you live in an area where it is common for people to rent storage sheds, then you know how expensive they can be. Depending on the size of your small travel trailer, it most likely won’t even need one.

Smaller Means Easier Mobility

One more great advantage of owning a smaller RV, camper, or travel trailer is that it is easier to maneuver in tight spaces. You can easily pull into smaller campgrounds or resorts with ease. If you are looking for camping sites during the summer months, then you will find it much easier to secure a small mobile space than one of the larger ones.

Considerably Safer and More Comfortable than Camping in Tents

Camping in a small travel trailer is safer and more comfortable than camping in tents. There are no dangerous animals to worry about, you won’t have to sleep on the ground, and it will be much easier to stay warm or cool – depending on the time of year. You will also have plenty of room for your camping supplies, unlike when you are camping in a tent.

Disadvantages of Small Travel Trailers

While there are many advantages to owning a small travel trailer, there are also some potential disadvantages. Here is what you should keep in mind:

Bath and Kitchenette are Only Accessible from the Outside

Since small travel trailers are compact, sometimes the bathroom and kitchenette can be located outside the trailer itself. This is not always the case, but it does happen with most tiny models. If you want to stay in a small trailer with both of these things inside of it, this could pose an inconvenience for you.

Smaller Means Less Space

One thing to keep in mind if you are thinking about buying a small travel trailer is that it will have less room than larger ones. They are suitable for short weekend getaways, but not much longer than that. Most of the time, it only comes with one bed. Depending on the size of the trailer, it might be a tight squeeze for multiple people.

The same goes for storage capacity. Smaller campers have less space, and storage will be strictly limited.

Not Ideal for Bad Weather Conditions

Small travel trailers are not ideal for very bad weather conditions. If you like to go camping in the rain or snow, then a larger and more heavy-duty camper might be better for you.

Now that we’ve taken the pros and cons out of the way, here is a list of 10 small travel trailers proven to be reliable, agile, stable, and efficient.

1.  2020 Keystone Springdale 1800BH Travel Trailer

2020 Keystone - Springdale 1800BH

  • Price: $9,999
  • Length 21-feet
  • Dry Weight of 3,394 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of up to 1,006 lbs.
  • GVWR of 4,400 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 485 lbs.
  • Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 27-gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 30-gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 30-gallons
  • Compact kitchen
  • Sleeps up to 6 people
  • 13,500 BTU air conditioner
  • 20,000 BTU heater

Keystone is one of the more well-established RV manufacturers with a reputation for infusing value with the high build quality.

With a hitch weight of only 485 pounds and a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,400-pounds, the 2020 Keystone Springdale 1800BH is in range to be towed by a half-ton pickup truck, a light-duty pickup truck or even a full-size SUV.

You also have to like the 1,006-pound payload capacity, which means you can bring a lot of your essential gear in the travel trailer, without having to pack your tow vehicle like a sardine can!

The convenient pass-thru storage compartment at the front lets you haul gear to your destination, then gives you an easy place to store dirty boots and other soiled outdoor gear.

Though I must admit the $9,999 price tag is kissing the upper limits of the price range.

Unless there’s a promotion, a clearance sale, or you are a savvy negotiator, the tax and licensing costs might push the overall cost a little over $10,000.

2020 Keystone - Springdale 1800BH Floorplan

About The Travel Trailer’s Interior

The 27-gallon freshwater storage tank and the pair of 30-gallon gray water and black water storage tanks are a really nice touch.

It also means the 2020 Keystone Springdale 1800BH can support a full bathroom, which is somewhat rare in a camper trailer that costs less than $10,000. It includes a sink, a small shower stall, and a flushing toilet.

The freshwater and wastewater tanks also help support the compact kitchen’s sink. It includes a small RV refrigerator as well as a two-burner propane stovetop.

There’s a large dinette table that can also be turned into an additional sleeping space.

The front of the 2020 Keystone Springdale 1800BH houses a queen size bed, which is also somewhat rare in a travel trailer under $10,000.

The aft area has a pair of bunk beds. On paper Keystone claims this travel trailer will sleep up to 6 people, but five if more realistic.

2. Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite Super Lite 16BHC Travel Trailer

The 2020 Gulf Stream - Ameri-Lite 16BHC

  • Price: $9,500
  • Length 19-feet
  • Dry Weight of 2,590 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of up to 460 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 330 lbs.
  • Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 30-gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 36-gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 36-gallons
  • Sleeps up to 4 people
  • 8,000 BTU air conditioner
  • 16,000 BTU heater

Gulf Stream is one of the more beloved RV institutions that attracts its own loyal following year after year.

Largely based on an aluminum and wood construction platform the 19-foot 2020 Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite 16BHC only has a hitch weight rating of 330-pounds.

This puts it in range for even a mid-size SUV with a robust tow package installed.

Here again, this travel trailer rides the top end of the price range with a price tag around $9,500.

So, it might just reach over the $10,000 mark after licensing fees and taxes.

Though Gulf Stream does have a habit of overproducing beyond market demand, so if you wait under the late summer or early fall, you might just be able to scoop up a 2020 Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite 16BHC as part of a season-ending clearance sale.

The 2020 Gulf Stream - Ameri-Lite 16BHC Floorplan

On paper Gulf Stream claims this travel trailer can sleep up to four people, but that might be stretching it.

The “Master Bed” is actually a convertible dinette table, that isn’t necessarily comfortable for two adults to stretch out on.

Though there are two comfortable bunks in the back. This makes the 2020 Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite 16BHC a good option for a single parent with two kids, who wants to introduce them to camping in the great outdoors.

There’s a full bathroom in the 2020 Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite 16BHC. It includes a shower stall, a sink, and a flushing toilet.

Both the bathroom and the kitchen sink are supported by the 30-gallon freshwater tank as well as the 36-gallon black water and 36-gallon gray water storage tanks.

This disparity in volume means you can bring additional freshwater supplies with you in an Aquatainer or similar freshwater storage tank for doing things like washing hands and dishes when you boondock or camp off the grid.

The kitchen also has a small RV absorption refrigerator. It was designed to be durable enough to handle the bumpy rigors of driving on gravel roads and staying in primitive campsites.

It can run off electricity from an RV park’s shore power, a generator, or even propane. There’s also a two-burner stove to let you cook small meals inside.

3. 2021 Sunray 129 Travel Trailer

The 2021 Sunray 129 Travel Trailer

  • Price: $9,000
  • Dry Weight of 1,840 lbs.
  • GVWR of 3,500 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 140 lbs.
  • Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 21-gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 24-gallons

The 2021 Sunray 129 Travel Trailer is a lightweight travel trailer camper and measures in just a hair under 19-feet long.

With a hitch weight of 140-pounds and a gross vehicle weight rating of 3,500-pounds, it’s in range for a full-size SUV or a mid-size SUV with a towing package to move it from Point A to Point B.

The 21-gallon freshwater tank and the 24-gallon black water storage tank are just the right sizes to support a small family for a little off the grid boondocking.

Yet if they aren’t so large that they drive up the gross vehicle weight. For a camper this compact, there’s even a 13,500 BTU air conditioner.

This rating is more than sufficient to keep the interior cool, even when the temperature outside is hot and humidity soaks the air.

The 2021 Sunray 129 Travel Trailer Floorplan

The interior of the Sunray 129 is the definition of cozy, yet it doesn’t feel cramped.

This is thanks in part to a very thoughtful layout and engineering in the placement of the beds and bathroom features. The toilet is even conveniently tucked into a bench area.

The dinette in the 2021 Sunray 129 quickly converts into a relatively spacious bed.

There’s also additional bunk space for kids. Two average-size adults could fit in the converted dinette.

Though the different seams of the cushions can be a little awkward and overly firm.

If you did want to sleep two people on it, you might want to add an air mattress for a smooth sleeping surface and added comfort.

The kitchen area includes a two-burner propane stove, as well as a modest RV refrigerator.

It’s an absorption refrigerator that can run on propane or electricity, which is nice for times when you want to do a little boondocking.

There’s even a microwave, which isn’t always found in a travel trailer for under $10,000.

4. 2020 Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHS Travel Trailer

Forest River - Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHS

  • Dry Weight of 3,097 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of up to 708 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 377 lbs.
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 23-gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 23-gallons
  • 6-gallon hot water heater tank
  • Sleeps up to 5 people

Forest River has long been a leader in the RV industry. Today they are part of the Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate, which gives them access to high-quality materials, and components as well as cost-efficient manufacturing technology.

This ultimately translates into a friendly price point on a high-quality camper like the 2020 Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHS.

It has a lot in common with the bigger brothers in the Cherokee Wolf line, which further emphasizes the value of this travel trailer camper.

Yet at just a little over 3,000 pounds in dry weight and a hitch weight of only 377-pounds, it’s light and nimble enough to be towed by a full-size SUV or a light-duty pickup truck.

The 32-gallon fresh water tank is more than sufficient to support the bathroom shower, sink, and toilet, as well as the kitchen sink.

It also has a 23-gallon gray water storage tank and a 23-gallon black water storage tank.

For a small family, this means you can boondock off the grid and without the supplies of an RV park for several days at a time.

Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHS Floorplan

The interior of the 2020 Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHS is very comfortable, yet still compact.

There’s a queen-size bed in the front that serves as the master suite. It also has two bunk beds and a convertible sofa bed in the form of the dinette.

On paper, Forest River claims this travel trailer can sleep up to 5 people, and it’s a claim that holds true in the real world.

The kitchen includes a two-burner stove and a fair amount of storage space. There’s also a modest RV refrigerator that runs on electricity or propane.

Though you might want to also keep a separate cooler for beverages on ice and cold snacks. This will let you maximize the food storage potential inside the RV refrigerator.

The 2020 Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHS has a full bathroom, which is somewhat rare in travel trailers under $10,000.

The shower stall is arguable large, and there is even a 6-gallon hot water heater, which can let one person take a long shower, or two separate quick showers.

The 13,500 BTU air conditioner is more than powerful enough to keep things cool inside the Cherokee Wolf Pup.

Though a small battery-powered tent fan will help keep the air circulating so anyone sleeping on the top bunk will get the cool air that tends to pool at the floor.

The 20,000 BTU heater is also plenty warm when the weather turns cold. You could very easily use the 2020 Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHS travel trailer as a fall to early winter base camp for hunting trips.

Just keep in mind that the freshwater and wastewater storage tanks and the primary water line are not insulated.

So, if you do use it in temperatures under 32-degrees, you’ll want to take measures to keep the on-board water system from freezing up.

5. 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 7 145 RB Travel Trailer

2020 Jayco - Jay Flight SLX 145RB

  • Length 16.5-feet
  • Dry Weight of 2,405 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of up to 735 lbs.
  • GVWR 3,140 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 220 lbs.
  • Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 10-gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 19.9-gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 19.9-gallons
  • Sleeps up to 3 people
  • 18,000 BTU heater

Jayco is another RV industry leader that resides under the umbrella of the much larger Thor Industries.

Here again, access to superior materials and cost-efficient manufacturing helps keep the price tag down on the 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 145RB.

Though, there are some trim levels and optional extras available that can drive up the price on this 16.5-foot long $9,999 travel trailer.

So, if you really need to pinch a penny or two, you might want to wait until the inevitable clearance sales in the fall that you see at many RV dealerships.

Especially RV dealerships in the northern United States and Canada, who need to reduce inventory before the snow flies.

With a gross vehicle weight rating of 3,140-pounds and a hitch weight of only 220-pounds, the 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 145RB is easily towable by a light-duty pickup truck, half-ton pickup truck or a full-size SUV.

Even some mid-size SUV’s with a robust towing package should be able to tow this travel trailer safely at highway speeds.

The trade-off in all this lightweight construction and nimbleness is that it comes with relatively small freshwater storage tanks and wastewater storage tanks.

The freshwater storage tank only has a capacity of 10-gallons, which means it can’t even fill the 6-gallon hot water heater’s tank twice!

If you really want to enjoy a hot shower each day, you’ll either need to stay at an RV park that offers a direct connection to its water resources, or you will need to bring extra freshwater tanks with you for washing hands.

2020 Jayco - Jay Flight SLX 145RB Floorplan

The 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 145RB has a convertible dinette bed and a convertible sofa that let two to three people sleep in an L-configuration.

It’s a great combination for a single parent and an only child or a small family with one child.

The kitchen in the 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 145RB includes a 2-burner propane stovetop as well as a microwave, and a refrigerator.

The absorption refrigerator can run on electricity or propane and be designed to be very durable for times when you need to tow this travel trailer over rough bumpy, gravel roads.

There’s an impressive amount of storage throughout the 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 145RB.

Two overhead storage bins in the kitchen let you keep non-perishable foods close at hand, as well as your necessary kitchen equipment.

There’s also a wardrobe closet at the main access door, which is great for keeping dirty boots and coats out of the main living area.

The 8,000 BTU air conditioner and the 18,000 BTU per hour heater in this travel trailer is more than sufficient to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the fall.

With a little underbelly insulation and skirting, the 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 145RB could support a pair of hunters deep into a northern tier October hunting trip.

6. 2018 Dutchmen Aspen Trail 1700BH Travel Trailer

2018 Dutchmen - Aspen Trail 1700BH

  • Price: $9,800
  • Length 21.4-feet
  • Dry Weight of 3,200 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of up to 651 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 452 lbs.
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 28-gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 28-gallons
  • Sleeps up to 7 people

In 2018 Dutchmen’s production of travel trailers tended to exceed consumer demand.

This means in certain regions of the US, you can find the 2018 Dutchmen Aspen Trail 1700BH on a clearance sale at a dealership, or a gently pre-owned model for under $10,000.

With a 452-pound hitch weight and a dry weight of 3,200-pounds, you will need a half-ton pickup truck to tow it down the highway or up elevation.

The tradeoff here is that the 27-gallon freshwater storage tank and the dual 28-gallon wastewater storage tanks are more than enough to support a modest-size family for several days of off the grid camping.

2018 Dutchmen - Aspen Trail 1700BH Floorplan

About The Travel Trailers Interior

The 2018 Dutchmen Aspen Trail 1700BH was engineered to sleep a family or a group of friends.

There’s a convertible queen-size bed in the front of the travel trailer, as well as a pair of bunks in the rear.

The midship dinette also converts into a comfortable bed. On paper, Dutchmen claims you can sleep up to 7 people in this iteration of the Aspen Trail, but I think 5 is more realistic in the real-world.

There’s a full bathroom in the rear of the 2018 Dutchmen Aspen Trail 1700BH, which is somewhat rare in a travel trailer under $10,000.

It includes a flushing toilet, a decent size sink, and a shower stall. There’s even enough depth in the tub basin of the shower stall to bath a young child.

The kitchen in the 2018 Dutchmen Aspen Trail 1700BH resides along the passenger sidewall of the travel trailer.

It includes a two-burner stove, a microwave, and a large pantry closet. There’s also a modest-sized RV absorption refrigerator that can run on electricity or propane.

7. 2020 Rockwood Geo Pro 19FBS Travel Trailer

Forest River - Rockwood Geo Pro G19FBS

  • Price: $9,950
  • Length 20-feet
  • Dry Weight of 3,075 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of up to 1,338 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 413 lbs.
  • Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 37-gallons
  • 1 power-retractable slide out
  • A mid-size RV kitchen

Here again, we see Forest River throwing its considerable weight around in the travel trailer industry.

The 2020 Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G19FBS, is another camper that pushes right up on the $10,000 budget limit, but it has the features and builds quality to truly justify the price tag.

The 413-pound hitch weight and 3,075-pound dry weight of the 2020 Forest River – Rockwood Geo Pro G19FBS translates into the need for a robust tow vehicle.

A full-size SUV, a half-ton pickup truck, or a light-duty pickup truck with a robust tow package will be needed to tow this travel trailer at highway speed or up a steep grade.

Part of this sizeable girth is related to the high capacity of the 37-gallon freshwater storage tank and the two 30-gallon wastewater storage tanks.

They play an essential role in supporting the complete bathroom as well as the kitchen sink.

It also makes the 2020 Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G19FBS a great option for boondocking trips away from the resources of an RV park.

The front of the 2020 Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G19FBS also features a pass-through exterior storage compartment.

Not only can it help you haul gear in the travel trailer rather than in the tow vehicle, but it also gives you a large compartment to keep dirty outdoor gear once you set up camp.

Forest River - Rockwood Geo Pro G19FBS Floorplan

A lot of thought was put into the floorplan of the 2020 Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G19FBS. Careful placement means that there is a true queen size bed in the front.

There’s also a comfortable sofa that serves as a bed. This is a great layout for a small family who likes to go RVing.

The kitchen is impressively large for a travel trailer under $10,000. It features a three-burner gas stove, a microwave, and an independent stove.

There’s even an RV absorption refrigerator that can run on propane or electricity.

There’s also an outdoor grill station that can be handy for times when you don’t want the heat of cooking lunch or dinner to compete with the 13,500 BTU rooftop air conditioner.

Another area where the 2020 Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G19FBS sets itself apart from most of the competitors in this field is that it comes with a modest entertainment center.

It’s nicely positioned to be easy to watch from both the sofa/dinette couch as well as the queen size bed. That way the whole family can settle in enjoy a movie on a rainy day.

8. 2020 Forest River Flagstaff 176LTD Pop-Up Camper

2020 Forest River – Flagstaff 176LTD

  • Price: $7,500
  • Length 17-feet
  • Dry Weight of 1,456 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of up to 793 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 162 lbs.
  • Compact RV kitchen

While technically considered to be a popup or expandable camper, the 2020 Forest River – Flagstaff 176LTD is one of the most popular, lightweight campers on the market today.

It’s even light enough to be towed by a midsize SUV, or a robust sedan with a towing package.

There’s even an exterior awning to help keep the sun off you while relaxing outside, complete with a screening area to keep the bugs at bay.

This particular model has a modest 10-gallon freshwater storage tank. It’s meant to support the small kitchen sink for things like washing hands and dishes.

While there isn’t a hot water heater included, there is the plumbing to accommodate one.

It’s a great option for installing an aftermarket tankless water heater. There’s even a 20,000 BTU heater for keeping you warm on a cool summer’s evening.

The 2020 Forest River – Flagstaff 176LTD is a great entry level camper for small families that want to explore the great outdoors, without breaking the bank.

Then because it’s so popular, you can potentially resell it again in a few years when your kids are older and you want to upgrade.

2020 Forest River – Flagstaff 176LTD Floorplan

About The Camper’s Interior

Despite it’s relatively small size the 2020 Forest River – Flagstaff 176LTD has a compact RV kitchen.

It’s conveniently located at midship and includes a 2-burner propane stovetop as well as a durable RV absorption refrigerator.

Depending on where you are staying the refrigerator is designed to run on electricity or propane.

The heavy-duty interior construction and the fact that there are very few moving parts, means the RV refrigerator is tough enough to handle a long life traveling over bumping roads.

On paper the 2020 Forest River – Flagstaff 176LTD can sleep up to 6 people.

It includes a pair of full-size beds, one on each expandable section as well as a convertible sofa bed.

Though in real life it sleeps around 4 adults comfortably, though young children could share a full-size bed.

9. The 2020 Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 17BH Travel Trailer

2020 Coachmen - Clipper Ultra-Lite 17BH

  • Price: $8,950

  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 25-gallons

Coachmen is one of the more established names in the travel trailer niche of the RV industry.

They have a long-standing reputation for infusing long-term value and thoughtful features into most of their models. You see this in the 2020 Coachmen – Clipper Ultra-Lite 17BH.

With a gross vehicle weight rating of only 3,840 pounds, a hitch weight of 340-pounds and a payload capacity of 826-pounds it’s easy to tow.

If you have a full-size SUV, a light duty pickup, or even a mid-size SUV with a solid towing package in its trim level, you should be able to tow this hard side travel trailer with confidence.

The impressive 826-pound payload capacity is thanks in large part to a large pass-thru storage area in the front.

There’s also a lot of overhead storage space inside the camper. If you are going to be loading a lot of gear with you for a trip, you’ll want to make sure to evenly distribute it, so as to help prevent trailer sway problems when traveling at highway speeds.

The 13,500 BTU air conditioner is just strong enough to keep the interior properly cool on hot, humid summer days.

The awning also helps shield half of the 2020 Coachmen – Clipper Ultra-Lite 17BH from the sun, which further helps the air conditioner’s performance.

There’s also a 20,000 BTU propane heater, that will keep you cozy for fall hunting and leaf color tours.

2020 Coachmen - Clipper Ultra-Lite 17BH Floorplan

About The Travel Trailer’s Interior

One look at the floorplan in the 2020 Coachmen – Clipper Ultra-Lite 17BH, and you’ll see that it was laid out to appeal to families with multiple children.

The master bed in the front of the camper measures in at a tidy 54-inches by 74-inches, and will accommodate full-size bed sheets.

In the rear there are a pair of bunks that gives each child their own space. If you happen to not be traveling with your children the bunks can easily convert into spacious storage shelves.

The dinette area also turns into a bed that’s big enough for a teenager or a snoring spouse.

The kitchen in the 2020 Coachmen – Clipper Ultra-Lite 17BH includes a two-burner stove as well as a sink.

There’s also a mid-size RV absorption refrigerator which is big enough to hold perishable items.

Though if you do have two or three hungry mouths to feed, you might want to also invest in a large cooler for things like cold drinks and sliced cheese.

It’s also worth noting that there’s a large pantry cupboard, and an impressive amount of overhead storage throughout the camper.

It’s enough to let everyone have their own little storage space for personal items without having things intermingling on the shelf.

The rear of the 2020 Coachmen – Clipper Ultra-Lite 17BH also houses the bathroom.

There’s a flushing toilet, a sink for hand washing, and even a modest shower with a shallow tub basin. It’s just deep enough that you could give a toddler a bath.

10.  2019 Shasta Shasta 18FQ Travel Trailer

2019 Shasta - Shasta 18FQ

  • Price: $8,550
  • Dry Weight of 3,235 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of up to 1,796 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 325 lbs.
  • Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 42-gallons

Shasta is an older RV manufacturer that is making a comeback in the travel trailer niche.

Their 2019 Shasta 18FQ has a floor plan that is designed to cater to young families with one or perhaps two children.

On paper, and in the real world, it’s a great entry level camper that you might be able to get for very cheap at an overstock clearance sale from an RV dealer, or second hand through a private party that is looking to upgrade with their growing family.

Right off the bat the impressive 1,796-pound payload capacity really jumps off the page. This is rare for a travel trailer that’s priced under $10,000.

It’s thanks in large part to an exterior pass through storage compartment in the front.

Just be wise about how you load the 2019 Shasta 18FQ with gear. You don’t want to make it too nose heavy.

There’s a complete bathroom in the 2019 Shasta 18FQ, which is supported by a large 42-gallon freshwater storage tank as well as a 36-gallon gray water storage tank and another 36-gallon black water storage tank.

Here again, these are impressive numbers for a travel trailer that costs less than $10,000.

It really helps if you are the type of RV adventurer who likes to get off the grid for a little boondocking in the great outdoors.

2019 Shasta - Shasta 18FQ Floorplan

The sleeping space inside the 2019 Shasta 18FQ includes a 60-inch by 74-inch mattress in the front.

It’s surrounded on each side by wardrobe closets for his and hers storage. There’s also a large overhead storage shelf for communal items.

The large midship dinette converts into a modest-size bed. It’s certainly large enough to sleep a teenager, another adult, or perhaps two small children.

The kitchen in the 2019 Shasta 18FQ includes a 3-burner stove, as well as a microwave.

This is large and well-appointed for a travel trailer under $10,000. There’s also a heavy-duty, compact RV absorption refrigerator and a lot of pantry space for non-perishable food items.

There is a large, and complete bathroom in the rear of the travel trailer. It includes a flushing toilet as well as a sink and a full size shower stall.

Here again, we find a lot of storage potential in the large linen closet and the medicine cabinet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to buy a new or used travel trailer.

The truth is that the current crop of new travel trailers on the market today is a little crowded with options.

Yet consumer demand for specific features like a complete bathroom, and the storage tanks to support it, as well as creature comforts like an entertainment center, powerful air conditioning or a complete kitchen all serve to drive up the prices of new model travel trailers.

In many cases, the final price tag with all the creature comforts added ends up being over $10,000.

At the same time, travel trailers tend to be a common entry-level RV for first-time buyers. Especially for small families.

Within a few years of enjoying the RV lifestyle, many families will upgrade to a larger dual-axle travel trailer, fifth-wheel camper, or motorhome. Then they RV amenities simply grow with their children.

In many of these situations, the family is happy to part with their travel trailer that might be two or three years old, for a discounted price.

Is Tax And License Fees Included In The Price?

RV dealerships and most private sellers will not include things like taxes and license fees in the initial price they offer.

So, even if the ad or the sticker says that the travel trailer is under $10,000, you might end up paying a few hundred dollars more once all the ink on the fine print dries.

Should I Rent A Travel Trailer Before Buying?

Many RV dealerships and even a few rental agencies offer travel trailers and toy haulers that you can rent for a week or more.

This is a great way to get a feel for whether or not you truly like it. You might not even have to take it on a long trip.

Perhaps a nearby campground, or letting it live in your driveway while you take the time to truly explore its features will help you determine if it’s the right travel trailer for you.

Can I Tow A Travel Trailer With A Mid-Size SUV?

A lot of the newer mid-size SUVs on the market today come with towing packages and hitches on the standard model.

However, they don’t necessarily have the towing capacity to handle something larger than a teardrop or a popup camper.

With most travel trailers you need a full-size SUV , a light-duty pickup truck, or a half-ton pickup truck to safely tow it at highway speeds .

As always, make sure to double-check the ratings, which are stamped to a metal plate in your driver’s side door well.

Do Travel Trailer’s Hold Their Value In The Long Term?

Just like a car or an SUV the minute you take it off the dealership’s lot it starts to depreciate. This can be both good and bad, depending on if you’re a buyer or a seller.

If you are interested in a travel trailer for under $10,000, a gently used model that’s only a few years old could be a great value. Especially if the seller is upgrading with their growing family.

Just double check to make sure it’s passed all the necessary inspections and keep an eye out for the telltale signs of someone who shows pride of ownership.

If you are going to invest in a pre-owned travel trailer under $10,000, you don’t want to purchase a model that someone else beat up and is just trying to unload on you.

In general a travel trailer, like a lot of RVs will depreciate around 30% in three years time. From there you can expect it to be around half of the original sticker price at about ten years of age.

Today’s travel trailer market is rife with models that are well over the $10,000 price range.

A lot of these units come with a ton of creature comforts and special features included in the standard package.

Finding the best travel trailers for under $10,000 takes a little bit of a discerning eye.

If you are looking for a great value with a full bathroom, then the 2020 Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHS certainly deserves a good hard look.

If you have multiple children, or you like to camp with a group of your friends then you might want to move the Dutchmen Aspen Trail 1700BH up your list as it can comfortably sleep 6 to 7 people at a time.

On the other end of the spectrum, a single parent who wants to take their child on adventures in the great outdoors might prioritize the lightweight 2020 Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite 16BHC.

Whatever the size of your family, and what your specific priorities happen to be, chances are good that the best travel trailer for under $10,000 for you, is somewhere on this list.

The higher-end models of the Jayco jay flight can sleep up to 14 people, and they have a mighty 15-foot awning. That should be plenty of room for most families!

There are many models offered by Jayco. They have different floorplans and different features. The more premium models will have double sinks, entertainment centers, and outdoor kitchen areas. They will also have more spacious bathrooms.

It is one of the most popular travel trailers on the market today. The living area is quite large for such a small trailer, so if you have young kids or pets, this is great.

The tent is very easy to open up, and most people will be able to do it. Even if you are old or small, it is possible. You should not allow children to do this job though.

There is space for two beds in this travel trailer. So, if you have a small family that you are traveling with, this is a good option to consider.

However, keep in mind that this travel trailer is a tent. So, you won’t be able to use it in a place susceptible to heavy rain or wind.

6. Forest River Viking Express 9.0TD

2022 Coachmen Viking Express 9.0TD pic.twitter.com/boEDrGKgMU — Middle Class Dad (@middleclassdad1) September 6, 2022

If you want to upgrade to the deluxe package, the camper also comes with a refrigerator!

However, upgrading to deluxe is going to cost a lot of money, won’t it?

If you don’t want to do that, then you can check out this recent article on my site. I talk about the best portable refrigerators for your RV. It is much cheaper than paying for a built-in one, and you can use it in other vehicles like a car or boat.

The main benefit of this RV trailer is the size. Since it is so small, you can easily store it on your driveway at home. This is an important factor to consider since you are probably not going to be traveling for most of the year.

And if you do travel a lot, then you would probably invest in a proper RV.

So, if you don’t have a truck and you want a small camper for short trips, this is a great option. This RV trailer has a fiberglass construction and an outdoor battery compartment.

You may be wondering why fiberglass is such a popular material in the RV industry.

Fiberglass is an expensive material, and you may be wondering if it is worth paying for. To learn more about the pros and cons of fiberglass RVs, check out this recent article .

This camper also has a wide-opening frameless window for excellent ventilation. So, it is ideal for those hot, humid camping trips.

This trailer features large windows, a queen-sized bed, and a full kitchen. It also has a full bathroom with hot water! This is a super comfortable RV trailer, which is perfect for slightly longer excursions.

If you have a family to travel with, this is one of the best trailers you can get. It is, however, more suited for couples since there is only one bed. But if you have a small baby to look after, or if you sleep with your pets, it will be okay.

12. Oregon Trailer Do-Drop

DoDrop – Oregon Trail’R pic.twitter.com/vyxx2N9dGs — Middle Class Dad (@middleclassdad1) September 6, 2022

The trailer is small, and you won’t be able to carry a large tank of freshwater. This travel trailer does not have other features like a shower.

Also, it is a little bit expensive for such a small trailer. It is possible to find similar-sized trailers for under $2,000 if you shop in the used market.

13. Riverside Retro Travel Trailer 509

There is also an outdoor cooking area at the back of the trailer. However, it does not have a sink or stove. You will have to use your own stove or barbeque.

This is a simple travel trailer. Traveling in it won’t be the most comfortable experience, but it does the job. It is better than a tent.

In my opinion, it is better to have a trailer that is not comfortable. That way, you are forced to get outside and have some fun!

As with most travel trailers, air conditioning is standard on this model. There are two stoves in the kitchen area, space for a microwave, and a mini fridge. This is a super comfortable RV trailer. I recommend this one if you are going to be traveling in cold conditions.

You may be wondering how it is possible to comfortably and safely camp in an RV over winter.

There are so many things that you need to consider, such as insulation, powering the RV, and how to stop your water pipes from freezing. In this recent article , I give you my top 21 tips for camping in an RV over winter.

15. Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E15TB

Looking for a way to break into the #RVlifestyle without upsizing your SUV? Forest River has designed a travel trailer just for you, the Flagstaff E-Pro. The indoor kitchen of this RV is quite nice. It has 3 stoves, a refrigerator, and a sink. There are also plenty of overhead cabinets for storage. My only gripe with the cooking space is the fact that it is right next to the toilet!

The toilet in this RV trailer is very cramped. There is a shower in this RV trailer, but there is barely space to move in there.

So, this RV was definitely made with outdoor comfort in mind.

16. Gulf Stream RV Ameri-Lite Super Lite 16BHC

2022 GULF STREAM COACH AMERI-LITE SUPER LITE 16BHC pic.twitter.com/5RtfMU7yOX — Middle Class Dad (@middleclassdad1) September 6, 2022

Inside, the trailer has an air conditioning unit for those hot days and a microwave. The cooking space is good, but the stoves are right next to the wall. So, it might be difficult to use long-handled saucepans on there.

There are two bunks in this RV trailer. The bottom bunk is right in front of a window though. So you may want to get a shade for that, otherwise, you won’t have any privacy when sleeping.

You can get a roll-down curtain that sticks to the window with suction cups. Kind of like what they use on car windows where children sit.

The best thing about this RV is the fact it has a wet bath. The bathtub is a good size, and most adults will be able to comfortably use it.

17. Dutchmen Aspen 2260 RBS Trail Travel Trailer

2022 DUTCHMEN ASPEN TRAIL 2260 RBS pic.twitter.com/yZtjEO3iIu — Middle Class Dad (@middleclassdad1) September 6, 2022

The bathroom of this travel trailer is quite large, and there is a shower unit in there. There is not a bathtub.

The dining space is square-shaped, and the table can be adjusted. This helps to save space and use the dining area as a living area too. At the back of the trailer, there is a queen bed.

The kitchen space of this RV is super clean and nice. However, for some reason, there is a lot of wasted counter space behind the sink. So, you can only use the countertop for storage really, and not cooking. That’s because the faucet and sink are in the way!

This is a great RV travel trailer to consider for your next adventure!

18. American Dream Trailer

American Dream Trailer revives vintage camper with rowboat roof http://t.co/wDsMKcAKBJ pic.twitter.com/8BQpre1UBX — ???????????????????? ???????????????????? (@superfabis) June 15, 2015

So, if you are the type of person that likes lakeside camping trips, this might just be the RV trailer for you. This trailer is based on simplicity and escaping day-to-day life. It does not have that “home away from home” feel to it.

The interior of this travel trailer is not that comfortable, to be honest. Neither is it really practical. The reason why I have included it on this list though is because of the simplicity. Some people really like the bare minimum stuff when it comes to camping.

So, if you want to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life and paddle along lakes, this is a good option for you.

Hidden storage! 2022 Dutchmen Aspen Trail 2260RBS

There are plenty of options if you want a travel trailer under $10,000. If you want a more premium or larger travel trailer, you may need to shop in the used market to find an affordable model.

If you are going to be going on short trips, alone or as a couple, then a teardrop trailer would be great. These trailers are small, lightweight, and simple. They are very affordable too.

If you are an infrequent traveler, a trailer with a tent would be good. This is because they are small, lightweight, and easy to store. They are more affordable than other models too.

For people that want a solid RV travel trailer, you will be looking for an RV with an aluminum frame. If you can, get one with fiberglass siding, since it will be more durable.

Coachmen Clipper 15CBH and 17CBH

clipper-15-best-travel-trailers-under-20000-10-2023 Photo by Coachmen

These two Coachmen Clipper floorplans weigh under 3,000 pounds and provide a surprising amount of sleeping space. They’re ideal for families with small kids but might also serve well for friends, siblings, or even band members looking to take life on the road and have a comfortable place to rest, cook, sleep, and shower.

The major difference between the 15CBH and the slightly larger 17CBH is the addition of the 54” x 74” bed at the front of the second unit. The 15CBH is a front living travel trailer while the 17CBH is a rear bath. Besides that, both feature 28” x 72” bunks, a booth dinette, a full kitchen, and a dry bathroom with a 24” x 36” shower. With the 17CBH, you’ll have a front pass-through storage compartment for gear, while the 15CBH has two exterior storage compartments on the camp side.

Forest River Salem FSX 164RBLE

  • Length: 20’
  • Dry Weight: 2,819 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,061 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 2

The 164RBLE floorplan features a large rear bathroom with a linen closet, the kitchen on the off-camp side, and the sofa on the camp side. It has a queen-sized bed in the main sleeping area, which lies parallel to the trailer’s length.

That allows for wardrobe closets on either side of the bed with overhead cabinets above. The exterior features an 8’ powered awning and an oversized door on the off-camp side to access the exterior storage compartment.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH

  • Length: 21’8”
  • Dry Weight: 3,140 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,010 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 5

This compact Jayco Jay Flight SLX single-axle camper boasts an integrated A-frame chassis, dark-tinted windows, and galvanized steel wheel wells. The 174BH is a bunkhouse floorplan that can sleep up to five people comfortably.

The 195RB can still sleep up to four with the convertible dinette (available in both models), but it’s a much more comfortable option for couples. That’s largely because the bed is rotated 90°, eliminating the need to climb over each other to use the restroom in the middle of the night and creating space for closets on either side of the bed.

Forest River Wolf Pup 16BHS

  • Length: 21’9”
  • Dry Weight: 3,367 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,632 pounds

With a truly unique exterior finish, the Forest River Wolf Pup 16BHS is one of those small travel trailers that consistently turn heads on dealership lots. But it’s more than just a flashy camper, as it has all the perfect features you’d look for while remaining squarely in the conversation as one of the most affordable trailers out there.

The sleeping capacity and exterior amenities are hard to beat for its size – especially a mini outdoor kitchen with a mini-fridge and an exterior TV mount. The interior layout is similar to many others in this price range, but you get a true queen-sized bed and an exterior access door to the bunk area if you convert it to storage space.

East to West Silver Lake LE 16RBLE

  • Length: 21’3”
  • Dry Weight: 3,584 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,371 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 3

I’m a huge fan of the Murphy bed inclusion commonly seen on newer trailers that measure under 25’, like this East to West Silver Lake. It’s tough to state just how functional this feature is when it comes to opening up the living space during the day. It’s one of those things you just have to experience to believe, but with a small camper that’s going to have limited floor space, it can be a game-changer.

East to West also didn’t skimp in the bathroom in this model, with a walk-in, 14” x 40” shower, a single-basin sink with a mirrored vanity, and a wardrobe closet – three amenities you typically won’t find together in a bathroom in a camper of this size. Plus, you get a front pass-through storage compartment for camping gear, an LP quick connect for your outdoor griddle , and an exterior shower for rinsing off gear, feet, or anything else that gets dirtied.

Explore our nationwide inventory of Silver Lake LE trailers.

Forest River Viking 15SBH

viking-best-travel-trailers-under-20000-10-2023

  • Length: 17’10”
  • Dry Weight: 2,540 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,290 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 4

Similar to the Coachmen Clipper 15CBH, Forest River’s Viking 15SBH is one of the most compact floorplans on this list – without entering into the world of teardrop campers . It still offers a comfortable convertible dinette and two bunks, great for small families just getting into the RV lifestyle.

With an optional fireplace below the entertainment center, you can all stay warm and enjoy your favorite movies or shows on rainy days. This affordable travel trailer also features a compact kitchen, a comfortable dry bathroom, two underneath storage compartments, and a 10’ powered awning on the exterior.

Nobody needs to set up a tent outside with the Crossroads Zinger-Lite 18BH. The kids or teens will be comfortable in the 38” x 74” bunks, the parents can enjoy the spacious 60” x 74” queen bed, and the 38” dinette converts to a third sleeping area when needed.

The 6’6” interior height makes these Crossroads travel trailers ideal for taller campers. You’ll also have plenty of interior storage between the wardrobe at the foot of the queen bed and the overhead cabinets above the kitchen and the dinette. Top 10 Budget Travel Trailers Under 20K (With Video)

Best Travel Trailers Under $20,000

Travel trailers are one of the most affordable RV classes you can buy, with only teardrop trailers and pop-up campers offering a lower average cost.

However, even though they’re one of the most affordable that doesn’t mean every travel trailer is budget-friendly.

As large luxury travel trailers can cost well over $100,000, as is the case with many Airstream trailers .

In general though, if you’re shopping for an RV on a budget, the standard travel trailer is going to be your best bet.

As even the cheapest versions provide a good amount of features and interior space.

And to prove this, we’ve compiled the below list, which highlights some of the most popular and best travel trailers under $20,000 .

Best Travel Trailers Under $20,000 (Least to Most Expensive)

1. braxton creek bushwhacker plus 17fd, quick specs.

  • Average Cost : $14,000
  • Length : 18 Feet
  • Dry Weight : 2,240 Pounds

  • Sleeping Capacity : 4
  • Bathroom : 2-Piece Wet Bath

The Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17FD is one of the cheapest travel trailers you can buy, with an average price of only $14,000.

However, don’t let its super cheap price tag fool you.

As this affordable camper still provides all the same features and amenities, found on more expensive models.

As the Bushwhacker Plus 17FD offers a four-person sleeping capacity, a full-featured galley, and seating for four, thanks to its front convertible dinette booth.

Plus, this completely self-contained camper also provides a two-piece wet bath, with a combined shower and toilet.

2. Riverside RV Retro 135

  • Average Cost : $16,500
  • Length : 15 Feet 9 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 2,640 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 3,500 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity : 3
  • Bathroom : 2-Piece Dry Bath

The Riverside Retro 135 is one of the most unique travel trailers on this list, due to its distinctive retro styling.

As the camper was designed to look like a 1950s trailer on the exterior as well as the interior.

Which might not be for everyone but certainly gives the trailer a very unique look and feel.

The best part though is that despite its throwback styling, the Retro 135 still has all the same features and amenities as a modern travel trailer because, after all, that’s what it is.

Starting with its two-piece dry bath, which is quite an upgrade for a travel trailer of this size.

Riverside RV Retro 135 Floorplan

Riverside RV Retro 135 Floorplan

As most compact lightweight campers have a wet bath, which combines all the bathroom fixtures into one small wet area often not much bigger than a closet.

To see other compact lightweight campers with a dry bath, check out our blog post “ 10 Smallest Travel Trailers with a Dry Bath “.

Moving on from the bathroom though, the Retro 135 also features a small galley, an east-to-west queen bed, and either a jack-knife sofa or an optional small dinette booth for two.

Plus, the Retro 135 also has a 13,500 BTU roof-mounted A/C, a 20,000 BTU furnace, a 6-foot awning, lots of interior storage space, and good-sized holding tanks.

As the Springdale Mini 1760BH has one of the most spacious interiors as well as one of the highest sleeping capacities in a sub-20K camper.

Due to the RV’s slide-out and four separate sleeping berths, which include a front east-to-west queen bed, a convertible dinette booth, and rear bunk beds.

Designed for families who need more sleeping capacity, the 19BH has four separate sleeping berths, including a front east-to-west queen bed, a convertible dinette booth, and two single bunk beds in the back corner of the trailer.

One of the most popular travel trailers under $20,000 is the Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 14CC, thanks to the trailer’s well-laid-out design and feature-rich interior.

Weighing in at just under 3,000 pounds this sub-20-foot travel trailer packs a lot of features and amenities into a small space.

Due in large part to its unique rear entry door, which allows all the features in the trailer to be placed on the side walls without any interruptions.

Which might not seem like a big deal, but actually makes a big difference in the interior layout and design of the trailer.

As the Cherokee Wolf Pup 14CC is able to fully utilize the side walls of the trailer by placing a small dinette booth on the camp side of the trailer and a compact galley on the opposite side.

And yet still have space left over for a rear split two-piece dry bath as well as a queen size bed at the front of the trailer.

Beyond its rear entry door though, the 14CC also offers many class-leading features as well for its size and price point, when the trailer is equipped with various packages.

As the 14CC like all Cherokee Wolf Pups can be equipped with upgrade packages, like the Wolf Pup Limited Package, the Camping Package, or the Adventure Package, which add different attributes and upgrades to the camper.

For example, if the trailer is equipped with the Wolf Pup Limited Package, the camper provides an on-demand tankless water heater, a 14-inch premium wheel package, a Cherokee backup camera system, tire-pressure monitoring, and a Wolf Pup quick jack, plus much much more.

7. Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH

  • Length : 22 Feet 2 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,663 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 5,058 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity : 8

There are many things that make the Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH stand out from other budget-priced travel trailers.

However, probably the three biggest are its wide-body design, sleeping arrangements, and high sleeping capacity.

Starting with its wide body design, the Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH has a full eight-foot width as opposed to the more common seven-foot width found on most other smaller entry-level trailers.

Allowing the 197BH to offer class-leading interior space , despite its lack of slide-outs.

After its wide body design, the next most distinguishing characteristic of this budget-friendly travel trailer has to be its sleeping arrangements.

Because not only is this camper a bunkhouse model with double bunk beds that can sleep two kids comfortably or two adults snugly, but it also has a front murphy bed as well.

Allowing the trailer to maximize its living space and sleeping space at the same time.

Because when the trailer is in its daytime mode, it offers not only a large dinette booth but also a comfortable couch as well.

While at the same time offering four separate sleeping berths, when the trailer is in nighttime mode.

Including the previously mentioned double bunk beds and convertible dinette booth, as well as a north-to-south queen murphy bed.

Which when combined provide one of the highest sleeping capacities available in a budget-friendly entry-level travel trailer .

8. Forest River Salem FSX 179DBK

  • Average Cost : $18,500
  • Length : 22 Feet 6 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,219 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 4,865 Pounds

Another bunkhouse model that has a very similar layout to the above Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH is the Forest River Salem FSX 179DBK.

In fact, these two travel trailers have pretty much the exact same floor plan.

Featuring a front murphy bed, a camp side dinette booth, a full-featured galley, a corner three-piece dry bath, and double rear bunk beds.

Forest River Salem FSX 179DBK Floorplan

Forest River Salem FSX 179DBK Floorplan

A few key differences set these two very similar campers apart, though.

For example, the Salem FSX 179DBK offers an outdoor kitchen, while the Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH does not.

In addition, the Salem FSX 179DBK also offers several upgraded features that the Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH doesn’t, including larger panoramic windows and a higher BTU furnace.

As well as a larger 11 cubic foot 12V refrigerator, an outside shower, and upgraded appliances when equipped with the Best-In-Class package.

In fairness though, the Ameri-Lite Super Lite 197BH also offers a few upgraded features that the Salem FSX 179DBK doesn’t.

Including a frosted glass window in the entry door, extra comfortable Teddy Bear bunk mats for the bunk beds, and an upgraded furniture package.

9. Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU

  • Average Cost : $19,500
  • Length : 19 Feet 9 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,250 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 3,880 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity : 2

Coming in at just under $20,000, the Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU makes a great compact lightweight camper for couples.

As the Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU offers comfortable sleeping for two, thanks to its full-size front murphy bed.

As well as a comfortable place to hang out in the evening, thanks to its front oversized u-shaped dinette booth and opposing large entertainment center.

Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU Floorplan

Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU Floorplan

And because this camper is able to focus more on comfort and less on sleeping capacity, it’s able to offer features not usually found on sub-20-foot trailers.

Starting with the trailer’s large rear bathroom, which takes up the entire back wall of the camper and offers a large vanity with sink and medicine cabinet, a stand-alone separate toilet, and a 24-inch by 36-inch shower.

And finishing with the trailer’s extensive kitchen, which utilizes both sides of the trailer, and includes a 7 cubic foot gas/electric refrigerator, a two-burner cooktop, a microwave, a large pantry, and plenty of upper and lower cabinetry.

For more information on the Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU, be sure to check out Coachmen’s website by clicking here .

10. Forest River Viking 182DBU

  • Length : 22 Feet 3 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,840 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 4,433 Pounds

Also coming in at just under $20,000, the Forest River Viking 182DBU, formerly known as the Coachmen Viking 182DBU, and part of Forest River’s 4K Series shares many similarities with the above Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite.

And that’s for good reason; as the Viking, and the Clipper are actually sister RVs.

In addition, they’re also both produced by Forest River, as Forest River owns and produces all Coachmen RVs.

Despite being sister RVs though, there are quite a few differences between the Forest River Viking 182DBU and the above Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU.

Which has a lot to do with the intended end user of each RV.

Forest River Viking 182DBU Floorplan

Because while the above Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU is intended for couples, the Viking 182DBU is intended for families of four.

To see other travel trailers designed for families of four, check out our blog post “ 12 Best Small Travel Trailers for a Family of 4 “.

And as such, the Viking 182DBU has a lot more family-friendly features compared to the Clipper Ultra-Lite 162RBU.

Including a four-person sleeping capacity, bunk beds, more interior and floor space, and more storage capacity both on the interior as well as on the exterior.

For more information on the Forest River Viking 182DBU, and to see a 3D tour of the interior, check out Forest River’s website by clicking here .

In conclusion, while it can be challenging to find travel trailers under $20,000, as new entry-level models will often start in the mid-20s.

The 7 Best Budget RVs for $20,000 or Less, Ranked

By: Author The Drivin' & Vibin' Team

Posted on August 26, 2021

When looking for the perfect RV, there are a lot of factors to consider, especially your budget.

And finding the right RV with the right price tag can be tough.

With that in mind, here are some of the best RVs for under $20,000.

Let’s check them out!

travel trailers under $15 000

How Much Does the Average RV Cost?

According to TAXA, an RV manufacturer, RV prices can range between $10,000 and more than $150,000. Many factors affect prices, such as size, layout, class, and age. However, the average price, specifically for travel trailers, is between $10,000 and $60,000.

Pro Tip: Each class size of RV offers different benefits, but they also come with different price tags. Find the perfect RV for your budget by reading How Much Do RVs Cost?

What Kind of RV Can I Buy for a $20K Budget?

There are many options for RVs under $20,000. As stated before, prices depend on many factors. Although all these factors make determining a specific price for an RV complicated, having a lot of options means you should be able to find one that will suit your lifestyle as well as your budget.

However, you need to be aware that fifth wheels and mobile homes are likely not an option in this price range.

The Best RVs for a $20K or Less Budget

Although there are many options for RVs under $20K, here are some of our favorites. Join us as we take a deeper look at each one.

The Coachmen Freedom Express

Coachmen has multiple RVs in the Freedom Express line for various budgets. The most economical, and the smallest, is the Freedom Express Ultra Lite .

But even though the Coachman Freedom Express Lite is small, it packs some nice features. Amenities include a power awning with LED lighting, an exterior shower, room for a queen-size bed, and a winterizing kit that makes year-round RVing that much easier.

travel trailers under $15 000

Jayco Jay Feather

The newest version of the Jayco Jay Feather is the Micro . The Jay Feather Micro is Jayco’s lightest travel trailer to date and weighs less than 4,500 pounds.

Even with its compact size, this little RV has a lot to offer. The Micro has all the essentials and some extras, including a fully-equipped kitchen, crack-proof flooring, and innovative technology that makes this one of the lightest and strongest RVs in the industry.

travel trailers under $15 000

Dutchmen Aspen Trail

The Dutchmen Aspen Trail offers 82 inches of interior height in the main compartment and 72 inches in the slide-out. There’s an amazing kitchen with an under-mount stainless steel sink and seamless countertops.

The bedroom features a true 60 x 80-inch queen bed. Finally, the underbelly is fully enclosed, which helps weatherproof important systems such as water lines, and protects them from rough terrain or bumpy roads.

travel trailers under $15 000

Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro

The Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro has all the amenities you could want in a size that’s perfect for our modern towing needs. More people are towing their RVs with SUVs, which has created a need for lighter, more easily towed RVs.

However, these RVs still need to supply all the comforts of the larger models. And the Rockwood Geo Pro RV doesn’t disappoint in style or budget. Even in its smaller size, it provides a comfortable kitchen with a cooktop and 12V refrigerator, solar capability, and a half bathroom with a shower and floor flushing toilet.

travel trailers under $15 000

Keystone Hideout

The Keystone Hideout has a range of sizes from just over 21 feet to just under 40 feet, which makes it easier to find the right RV for you.

Features include a central vacuum system, ample storage in the kitchen with hidden pantries, and a 4G/LTE wifi prep that’s ready to connect to any major cell phone network.

travel trailers under $15 000

Livin Lite Camplite

Though no longer in production, the Livin Lite Camplite is a great RV if you find it used. Bonus features include a kitchen with ample storage and an aluminum slide-out to increase living space.

A standard U-shaped dinette area is also included, which can actually be swapped for a sofa and folding table if that works better for you.

travel trailers under $15 000

Forest River Flagstaff

Forest River’s Flagstaff line has multiple model options. One of the smallest, lightest, and best-priced options is the Flagstaff E-Pro.

At only about 20 feet and fewer than 3,500 pounds, the E-Pro is perfect if you’re planning on towing with a smaller, more economical SUV. Additional features include a Showermi$er Water Saver.

How to Find the Best Budget RVs

There are a lot of great locations to find an affordable RV. If smaller size is what you’re looking for, then buying new may be an option. You can work with a reputable dealer to find the RV that fits your life and budget.

Sometimes you can find a better price for a used RV. However, be careful when buying used. Check the manufacture date. An older RV may need repairs. Reading reviews can help you find a make and model that’s more reliable and narrow down your choices to a used RV you can trust for years to come.

Keep in Mind: It might be tempting to get an RV loan to pay for your dream home on wheels, but these are 5 Reasons to Avoid RV Loans .

Should You Buy a Budget RV?

When looking for an RV, price should always be an important factor. You want to get the right RV for your lifestyle but also need to make sure that it’s a price you can afford. Although having a nice RV is great, the stress of a payment that’s too high is often not worth it.

However, you should always be careful that your “good deal” isn’t actually something with poor craftsmanship or that’s too old to be sound. Make sure when looking that you’re buying something sustainable and reliable.

Why we recommend the Forest River Flagstaff Micro-Lite travel trailer:  This isn’t the first time that the Flagstaff Micro-Lite has made it to our list. It has consistently proven itself to be the best in more ways than one. It’s under $20,000 on our website right now, which is a steal when considering how many features are available. Durable camping for the entire family.

travel trailers under $15 000

View All Coachmen  Freedom Express Travel Trailer Floorplans!

Why we recommend Coachmen Freedom Express travel trailer:  Durable is what describes the Coachmen Freedom express travel trailer best. Its 26 floorplans have a footprint ranging from 22 to 36 feet, with sleeping capacities going from the small family of 4 all the way to a big family of 10. Depending on the floorplan you choose, you can either easily tow this travel trailer with a mini SUV, or some require a regular truck to tow those 5000+ pound travel trailers.

We liked the  Freedom Express 292BHDS  and the  Freedom Express 28.7SE  in particular due to their sleeping capacity and their decent length, but feel free to check out the others too. The features do not vary as much, sporting interior speakers, amber patio lights, fully walkable roof, and many others. travel trailers under $15 000

Why we recommend the Jayco Jay Feather travel trailer:  Jayco’s Jay Feather is aptly named. The slightly larger weight of the Jay Feather adds to the durability of the RV. You get 8 different floorplans and quite an extensive maximum sleeping capacity of 10 people. It’s also accompanied with a 35-feet length so there’s enough space for everyone to stay comfortable. Check out the  Jay Feather 23RL  and the  Jay feather 25BH  in particular.

View All Keystone  Hideout Travel Trailer Floorplans!

Why we recommend Keystone Hideout travel trailer:  If you’re thorough when looking at RVs to find the perfect one for you, it’s safe to say that the Hideout has something that’s just right for you out of its 44 floorplans. These cover a variety of weights, sleeping capacities, and lengths which truly makes it one of the most versatile travel trailers out there. We recommend taking a look at the Hideout 212LHS.

The Keystone brand has also been featured in our  Top 5 Best Cozy Fifth Wheel Campers for Winter .
