Tarapoto (356 m or 1,168 ft ASL) is the largest city in the San Martin region in north-central Peru and has grown to become a main commercial, tourism, and transport hub. Its strategic location – connected to the Upper Amazon and the historic city of Yurimaguas – has contributed to its economic prominence.

The city is a popular tourist destination due to its appealing geography, calid climate, and accessibility. The city itself is not very large, so it can be explored on foot. Beware of the soaring temperatures and ensure you keep yourself well hydrated and sheltered from the sun. Alternatively, moto-taxis are an inexpensive and speedy mode of transportation, although it’s worth noting that they create noise disturbances and often swarm the city streets.

People visit Tarapoto not necessarily for the city itself, but mainly for the beautiful natural surroundings. With its exuberant vegetation, scenic waterfalls, wildlife, and living cultures, Tarapoto offers many attractions for visitors.

Paradoxically, despite being the most deforested region in Peru, San Martin continues to attract visitors who are drawn to its natural beauty. This is precisely why the preservation of the region’s protected areas and their buffer zones is crucial in maintaining the vitality of tourism. Around Tarapoto, you can find the impressive Cordillera Azul National Park and the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area.

Echoes of ancient cultures continue to resonate in modern-day Tarapoto. Quechua, Awajún, Shawi, and even Chachapoya, have left a lasting impact on the region, contributing to the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Tarapoto.

In the not-so-distant past, the region carried a stigma of being unsafe and afflicted by narcotrafficking and terrorism. However, times have changed considerably. Guerrilla cells have been eradicated or significantly reduced and today is considered safe for tourists. While the fight against narcotrafficking has taken on a more innovative approach by embracing alternative forms of economic development, such as cacao production in replacement of coca.

Originally named Santa Cruz de los Motilones de Tarapoto (now commonly simplified), this enchanting city was founded in 1782. It quickly outshone Moyobamba , its neighboring city and official capital of the region, the oldest in the Peruvian Amazon (1540). We will discuss Moyobamba at the appropriate time as it is as well an enchanting destination with its own charm.

Tarapoto is nestled amidst three tropical valleys, boasting a unique location that nurtures an unmatched richness of biodiversity. From the lush rainforest canopies to the meandering rivers, each corner of Tarapoto abounds with nature’s wonders.

The region is commonly known for its majestic waterfalls. But it is more than that, it is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. With a stroke of luck, you may encounter a medley of captivating species, from vibrant birds and endemic frogs to the unimaginable array of invertebrate life in the undergrowth. While the plant life in Tarapoto is as diverse as its animal inhabitants. Tropical rainforests, cloud forests, and mountain vegetation create a tapestry of stunning landscapes. Although plant species do not have the popularity of animals visitors can expect to be enchanted by the large tropical trees, climbing vines, and various ferns, and mosses.

Things To Do in and near Tarapoto

Urku rescue center (5-6 km).

This is not a zoo. Despite showcasing the Amazon’s biodiversity, its main focus is the rescue, breeding, and reintroduction of wildlife species back into their natural habitat. The conservation of Amazonian plants and their associated secrets is carried out with a sustainable approach. Additionally, immersive ecotourism experiences are offered within 7 hectares of recovering forest. Alongside these efforts, the promotion of environmental education and scientific research is encouraged.

Lamas (20 Km)

A unique destination surrounded by various native Quechua-Amazonian communities, probably descendants of the Pocras and Chancas warriors. These communities still preserve their ancestral identity, and they are a living heritage of Peruvian history and culture.

Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area

An impressive mountain range that’s home to some of Peru’s most diverse ecosystems. There are different ways of accessing it and different attractions to visit depending on the kind of experience you are looking for, for example, AKONABIKH (27 Km), a 30-hectare rainforest private property nestled in the buffer zone of the conservation area. This pristine reserve is a paradise for bird watchers and nature photographers alike, offering guided tours, meals, and lodging.

Bosque Guardián Lodge (31 Km)

Located in the Tiraco river valley, inside the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area, there is this piece of an Amazonian cloud forest that is permanently recovering from cattle farming, tree cutting, and other human destructions. But don’t get fooled by that, because this place is astonishingly biodiverse. When you stay at the lodge you will experience sustainable activities specifically designed for environmental awareness and adventure. Here activities are a la carte , but plan time enough to immerse yourself, learn, enjoy, and relax, all at once because everything is so well-thought and holistic that you will feel in perfect balance with the surroundings and its people.

Pumarinri Lodge (32 Km)

Located in a privileged location, nestled on the banks of the Huallaga River, at the confluence of the Cerro Escalera Regional Conservation Area and the Cordillera Azul National Park, this place is thoughtfully designed following environmentally friendly practices. The area boasts a rich diversity of birds, butterflies, and amphibians, which can be observed along the lodge’s trails or during excursions to the forest, waterfalls, or native communities (Nuevo Lamas and Shapaja).

Chazuta (46Km)

From the moment you arrive, you’ll witness the ancestral tradition of burials of this town. Observe this rich heritage displayed prominently at the main square or delve deeper at the local museum to unlock its fascinating secrets.

While their living tradition in ceramics is rooted in women and holds an extraordinary iconography with an ancient origin. This knowledge has been passed down from mothers to daughters, and they have managed to preserve their aesthetic values and social significance, which has earned them the declaration of being National Cultural Heritage.

Chazuta is also known for its medicinal plant tradition. Local healers use different species from the jungle to treat various ailments and diseases, and visitors can learn about these practices.

Here you can also visit the women-managed chocolate factory, or the Chacra Pasikiwi for agrotourism experiences.

Lastly, you can simply enjoy the natural beauty of the area, including the majestic Huallaga River and so many waterfalls with Río Bosque Mágico Chazuta , as the area is perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, and birdwatching.

This is a very popular destination that can get crowded during peak seasons, with jetskies and banana boats that are probably not to your liking. Don’t worry though, when it’s not too busy, the lagoon truly shines like a hidden gem.

But to make your visit more meaningful and sustainable, head to Ecoparque La Soñada (60 Km) . This place is all about responsible practices and preserving the beauty of the destination and its people. To get there, enjoy a delightful 20-minute boat ride with breathtaking views. Once you arrive, immerse yourself in educational and sustainable activities like exploring an orchid collection, attending a workshop on traditional plant medicine, making artisanal chocolates, discovering a salt mine, and marveling at exquisite statues representing different ethnic groups from the Amazon.

Volunteering here is possible. Bosque fluir is a permacultural place in El Sauce that face the challenge of protecting the forest from human threats and consolidating it as a space for harmonious coexistence with the Amazon. It is about opening the forest to explore and teach sustainable living alternatives.

San Roque de Cumbaza (18 Km)

This is where our extraordinary 4-day experience starts guided by our dear Patty. Featuring a vibrant celebration of women, the itinerary offers engaging activities to keep you actively engaged while immersing you in the wonders of nature and culture. Explore the lush jungle, invigorate yourself in the refreshing river, listen to captivating stories, and even create your own unique crafts to cherish as mementos. Join us on this unforgettable journey and Connect with the Heart of Amazonian Culture .

Practical Information to Prepare for your trip to Tarapoto

Given all the options that we are displaying here, you can imagine now that spending less than 3 days in Tarapoto would be crazy. We want you to try to stay at least 6 and this way you will get a decent approach to the region, contribute significantly to its economy and really enjoy the destination.

From May to October is the best time given the lack of rain.

The rainy season spans from november to april (this is the same as for any Andean/Amazonian destination in Peru) and that could represent a bit of a challenge if you are on a tight schedule or planning to reach less accessible places (like Chazuta for example) but for the rest of options that we present here, rainfall is not a problem, you just have to adapt a bit to it.

Let’s say that an average range goes from 30 to 10°C, considering a regular day and a cold-rainy night.

Tarapoto has excellent connectivity to other destinations in Peru. There are daily flights to Lima, as well as less frequent flights to other cities such as Iquitos, and with smaller planes to Yurimaguas, Pucallpa, and Chiclayo. You can also take a bus from Tarapoto to other nearby cities such as Moyobamba and even get to Leymebamba and Chachapoyas.

Stay Hydrated : Tarapoto’s tropical climate can be quite warm and humid. Always carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Protect Against Mosquitoes : Tarapoto is rich in biodiversity, including mosquitoes. Wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Use a strong insect repellent for added protection

Respect Local Wildlife : Encounters with local wildlife can be thrilling, but remember to maintain a safe distance. Never feed wild animals or touch them without professional guidance.

Practice Safe Eating and Drinking : Enjoy the local cuisine but be cautious about where you eat. Stick to restaurants with good hygiene standards. Avoid tap water and opt for bottled or filtered water instead.

Road Safety : Be aware of your surroundings when navigating the city. Traffic can be hectic, so always use marked crossings and stay alert.

When trying to summarize the gastronomy options in Tarapoto, numerous thoughts come to mind as the local culinary scene also offers an abundance of opportunities for everyone to explore and savor.

Street food

Every day, as the sun begins to set and the locals finish up their work, the streets come alive at the Partido Alto corner. Local women and their grills come out, creating a picturesque scene of street food and hungry locals. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll to whet your appetite or a convenient ride, any driver will guide you to this vibrant culinary experience.

Try the tantalizing barbeque fish expertly wrapped in a fragrant leaf and the enticing “jungle pizza” that boasts a plantain base topped with cheese, dried meat, and the region’s signature sausage, there is a delightful adventure awaiting at every corner.

Or explore the plethora of equally exceptional day-to-day options available from early hours and up to lunchtime at the local market.

Vegetarian/vegan

Although this eating style may not be widely practiced in Tarapoto, it is important not to underestimate the following options that are actually remarkable even when they are limited.

Additionally, make sure to savor the ice creams and juices made from Amazonian fruits. Some names to remember include aguaje, carambola, camucamu, pijuayo, pomarrosa, taperibá, and unguraui.

One big and successful business (because it is more than just a restaurant) is La Patarashca, where the fusion of traditional and modern cuisine yields exquisite dishes, often characterized by out-of-the-ordinary ingredients and intricate preparation techniques. To try these culinary delights, consider visiting it because despite being very commercial and popular, it is indeed an escape from the hot and loud city center.

Looking for exquisite cocktails? Look no further than Suchiche bar, conveniently located at La Patarashca. Indulge in a delightful libation experience like no other (do it with moderation).

Seeking a quick respite from the bustling energy of downtown Tarapoto? Look no further than La Banda de Shilcayo , where you can relish in fresh air, tranquility, and a delightful cup of coffee. Facts about Tarapoto

Located in the northern jungle of Peru, Tarapoto has a population of roughly 180,000 people and is the largest city in the greater province of San Martín. The reason why the city holds the name Tarapoto is a bit of a local mystery, but two theories have been suggested. The first refers to a palm tree that grows by the river, Tarapotus. The second talks about the language used by the indigenous community of Lamas, around 30 minutes drive from the city. In the Quechua of Lamas, “tara” refers to fish or beans, and “poto” which refers to the shape of a huingo, a well-known jungle fruit.

Things to Do in Tarapoto:

  • Entertain yourself at the Plaza de Armas: Tarapotos’s Plaza de Armas is a hotspot of activity of the city that you simply can not miss. The perfect time to go is around 6:00 pm, as almost the whole city is there. You can find people painting, drawing and even singers right in the center of the plaza. If you get a little hungry, treat yourself to some traditional snacks found around the Plaza de Armas. These include chifles, (plantain, sliced thin and fried). Mani confitado, (a type of sweet peanut), and cotton candy (you already know). If none of these tickle your fancy then don’t worry! There are plenty more things to choose from. Of all the things to do in Tarapoto, this is one that you will not miss.
  • Fill Up on Some Local Food: Be sure to visit some of the places that offer traditional food from the jungle! We talk about food a lot on this blog, but that is because the food from the jungle is so unique and delicious! No list of things to do in Tarapoto would be complete without including a sampling of the local cuisine, and no trip to Tarapoto would be complete without trying what the jungle has to offer. There are no (or barely any) formal restaurants serving traditional dishes, instead food stalls offering local food. This local food includes dishes such as anticucho (a small stick of meat and vegetable pieces), and cecina and chorizo (a type of smoked pork). You will find plenty of fresh barbecue and bananas (you HAVE to try the barbequed bananas) while you’re eating in the jungle! And the best part? It’s all very cheap!

things-to-do-in-tarapoto-waterfalls

  • Enjoy Ahuashiyacu Waterfalls: Just 20 minutes from the city, Ahuashiyacu waterfall is the most famous and visited fall in the whole region of San Martín. If you are looking for a peaceful and natural day out, you will definitely love this place. It has a small natural pool with clean and fresh natural water. Make sure to spend a little time looking out for the exotic birds and plants as well!
  • Try the Special Drinks: The iconic drinks in the jungle are very popular, and they have very appealing names. A few of the most well known are 7 raíces , a mixture of local roots and aguardiente. People used to drink this for health purposes, similar to emoliente, but now it is mostly just drunk for fun! Another one to try is uvachado . Uvachado is a sweet wine that is the most famous drink in the jungle. Be careful! These drinks are powerful, it only takes one shot and you’re ready for the evening! The drinks are a combination of alcohol, which is called “aguardiente” and made from natural roots and local fruits. They’re available in specific bars.
  • Bird-watching: If you love to get in touch with animals and nature, this is for you. A relatively new activity to Tarapoto, birdwatching consists of observing and studying wild birds. There are several routes for bird-watchers near the city. Two of the most popular are Circuito Ecoturìstico Alto Shilcayo and Bosques secos de Juan Guerra, but there are plenty to choose from. Keep in mind that there are a few guides around to help you. This is another great, free activity to do in Tarapoto. Make sure to pack a pair of binoculars if you want to have a go!

things-to-do-in-tarapoto-drinks-happy-hour

  • Happy Hour at Calle de las Piedras (Stones street): Calle de las Piedras (Stones street) is popular spot in Tarapoto. There are always plenty of tourists and locals alike, all enjoying the discounted drinks. What makes Calle de las Piedras a great place to visit is the variety of crazy drinks you can find in the many bars and pubs. The entire street is completely dedicated to the nightlife. Some bars sell only alcohol but others also offer food as well (just in case you get hungry). You will find a loads of recorded and live music in each bar. The local bands are bursting with talent, so try and enjoy some! There’s no debate, on this strip you will definitely find a place that suits you.
  • Discover the Castle of Lamas: This medieval castle was built by a rich Italian man. He used the natural stones of the region, and according to his memoirs, he molded the stones for the castle by hand. This beautiful creation is five floors high, and on each level, there is a magnificent view of your surroundings, including the valley of the Rio Mayo. Here is where two worlds collide, the European World and the world of Native Americans.
  • Rafting: If you like extreme adventures, you will love this. This amazing experience can be found on the Mayo River and is the perfect activity to do with your friends and family. You’ll be able to get in contact with nature, birds and the communities living close to the river, as well as getting your adrenaline pumping!
  • Spend time at Laguna Sauce: We recommend spending the whole day on this! You will love the huge Laguna Sauce (also known as the Blue Lagoon, or Laguna Azul) and the hypnotic blue of the water. There are small boats available to rent, and even tours available. If you choose to take a tour then you can get up close and personal with all the best parts, seeing the exotic jungle wildlife. There are also rustic restaurants dotted around the lake and are a great spot for lunch. Fill up on local, freshly caught fish accompanied by the delicious bellacos bananas (a special kind of banana found in the jungle) and of course, try the local drinks.

tarapoto-river-boat

  • Swim in the River: Tarapoto is also known for its nearby rivers. There are a couple to choose from, all very near to the city, just a 10 or 15-minute drive away. If you are tired of swimming in pools but want to keep swimming, this is your chance to try something a little different. Spend some time on the riverbank enjoying the water (which arrives fresh from the mountains). You could even make a picnic to enjoy with your friends. This is a great thing to do as it doesn’t have a price, just an unforgettable experience to enjoy with your loved ones.
  • Explore Pumarinri and Pucayaquillo: If you are looking for a nice stroll in the jungle, this is the perfect trip for you. The adventure begins at Pucayaquillo waterfall, which is roughly 45 minutes from the city. Here, you can swim in the natural pool, formed by the waterfall and enjoy the scenery for as long as you like. As you move on, make sure to stop in at the Pumarinri Lodge for an exotic jungle-inspired lunch.

A Guide to Tarapoto, the City of Palms in Northern Peru

The city of Tarapoto isn’t a prime tourist destination. Stuck out in the high jungle region of Northern Peru, it’s a long way from the northern coastal circuit and even further from the popular Gringo Trail down south. The so-called “City of Palms,” however, is far from being a sleepy outpost.

Since its founding in 1782, Tarapoto has grown to become the main commercial, tourism, and transport hub for the San Martin region. The city has all but absorbed the two outlying districts of La Banda de Shilcayo and Morales, with the combined metropolitan area now home to a population of more than 150,000.

Why Visit Tarapoto?

Tarapoto rarely wows new arrivals with impactful first impressions. The city itself is a mix of non-descript, semi-modern facades and ramshackle tin-roof homesteads, while the immediate surroundings are agricultural and not the dense jungle that some visitors assume they’ll find. Throw in the often-oppressive heat and the constant buzz of mototaxis and you have a destination that some visitors find... disagreeable.

In Tarapoto, however, you need to dig deeper, explore further; you need to give the place a chance. The city itself is short on sights, but don’t miss the fascinating Tabacalera del Oriente cigar factory (Martinez de Compagñon 1138). You’ll need to head beyond the city limits for further attractions, including scenic waterfalls such as Ahuashiyacu and Huacamaillo, the petroglyphs of Polish, and culturally important towns such as Lamas and Chazuta .

Tarapoto also attracts visitors in search of more specialized forms of tourism. The region’s diverse flora and fauna is a big draw, with people coming from across the globe in search of everything from orchids to birds to frogs. There’s also white water rafting for thrill-seekers, and ayahuasca for those in search of enlightenment. (Tarapoto is home to the Takiwasi Center, a major center for the treatment of drug addiction and research into traditional medicine, in which ayahuasca plays a major part.)

Tarapoto has a wide range of cheap to midrange restaurants and a growing number of upscale options. You’ll find plenty of cheap eateries selling lunchtime menús for S/.4 to S/.6 nuevos soles, but the quality is hit-and-miss. Ice cream parlors are also popular due to the heat. If you’re looking for coffee, cake and an internet connection, head to Cafe Plaza on the main square.

Meat-eaters should make the most of the region’s exceptional pork and pork products, including cecina (slabs of cured pork) and chorizo sausage. These are often served with tacacho (balls of mashed plantain), another regional specialty. From the late afternoon onwards, keep an eye out for street-side grills selling cecina , chorizo and other meats at affordable prices. For a traditional jungle snack, pick up a leaf-wrapped juane .

Some recommended restaurants include:

  • El Brasero: for excellent pork dishes (San Pablo de la Cruz 254)
  • El Rincón Sureño: an elegant restaurant and the best place for steaks and other big chunks of meat (Augusto B. Leguía 458)
  • Brava Grilled : excellent burgers (San Martin 615)
  • La Collpa: overpriced, but a good option for regional dishes (especially fish) with a great view (Circunvalaciòn 164)
  • Caja Criolla Restobar : sublime roast pork (with perfect crackling) cooked in a caja china (Jr. Rioja 328)
  • Primer Puerto: one of the newer cevicherias in Ta5rapoto, and probably the best (Ramirez Hurtado 461)
  • El Pollo Marino: a popular cevicheria near the main square; ceviche in Tarapoto can’t rival ceviche found on the coast, but El Pollo Marino generally does a good job (Grau 182)
  • La Patarashca: a hot spot for regional dishes, albeit expensive and borderline-trendy (Lamas 261)
  • Chifa Canton: one of the best chifas in town, centrally located (Ramon Castilla 140)
  • El Norteño: it’s worth heading to the Banda de Shilcayo district just to try El Norteño’s Cantonese chicken (Santa María 246)

Drinking and Dancing

If you stroll around the city center on a Friday or Saturday night, you might think Tarapoto has little to offer in terms of nightlife. But just two blocks up from the square you'll find a block known as the Calle de las Piedras (Street of Stones) on Jr. Lamas.

This block is full of bars, including Stonewasi, a lively bar that has become something of a Tarapoto institution; the slightly more trendy and more expensive La Montañita; the comfortable Suchiche Cafe Cultural; and Huascar Bar, a friendly bar frequented by locals, Tarapoto expats, and foreign backpackers.

After a few beers in the Calle de las Piedras, jump in a mototaxi and head down to the Morales district. The road heading out of Morales is lined with lively discotecas , including Anaconda, Macumba, and Estación. Take your pick and prepare for a long night of dancing.

Accommodations

Tarapoto has accommodation options for every budget, although backpacker hostels (aimed at the international crowd) are limited. Hotel San Antonio (Jiménez Pimentel 126) is a good budget option right in the center; you’ll also find a number of affordable guesthouses along the second block (cuadra dos) of Alegría de Morey, a street just off the main square. La Patarashca (tied in with the restaurant of the same name, but a block away on San Pablo de la Cruz 362) is a charming option if you’re willing to spend a little more each night.

There are plenty of other hotels of varying quality dotted around the city. The towering Boca Raton Hotel (Miguel Grau 151) is a modern complex right in the center of Tarapoto. The three-star Hotel Nilas (Moyobamba 173) is another good option near the main square.

For a relaxing resort-style stay, consider Puerto Palmeras, located just outside Tarapoto (Carretera Fernando Belaúnde Terry, Km 614). It’s not cheap but it will keep you away from the constant hustle and bustle of the city.

When to Visit

The main annual event in Tarapoto is the Festival of San Juan , a festival celebrated throughout the jungle regions of Peru on June 24. Tarapoto’s Semana Turística (Tourist Week) takes place from July 8 to 19 (exact dates may vary), featuring street parades, music festivals, gastronomic fairs, and more.

In terms of weather, Tarapoto is hot and humid year-round (with some rare exceptions). March and April tend to be the wettest months, but shifts do occur. At any time of the year, it’s not unusual to hear a large crack of thunder followed by an hour or so of torrential rain.

How to Get to Tarapoto

  • By air: Tarapoto’s Guillermo del Castillo Paredes Airport is located a short mototaxi ride from the city center (S/.6 fare). The domestic airlines LAN, TACA, and StarPerú have daily flights between Tarapoto and Lima; StarPerú also connects with Iquitos and Pucallpa.
  • By land: From Lima, there are two overland options. You can head up the coast to Chiclayo and cut inland via Pedro Ruiz and Moyobamba. Movil Tours has buses direct from Lima to Tarapoto (28 hours approx.). Alternatively, you can head from Lima to Tingo Maria and then north to Tarapoto. This route involves a few changes but is quicker if you can avoid delays. You can do the Tingo Maria to Tarapoto route with the Pizana Express car company.
  • By boat: Tarapoto can’t be reached by boat, but the port in the town of Yurimaguas (a two-hour ride from Tarapoto) has passenger boats to Iquitos.

Tarapoto sits with one foot in the misty jungles of the Amazon and the other on the rugged ridges of the low Andean foothills in Peru. The town itself is a commercial hub with unplanned urban growth and a smuggling problem, but its main draws lie outside. To the north-east, the Cordillera Escalera rises in a medley of waxy rainforests, and to the west the selva baja forests are a place of chirping hills and sylvan valleys. This geographical setting reveals natural treasures such as the cataracts of Ahuashiyacu, the El Sauce Lagoon and the waterfalls of Pucayaquillo, and tour guides from Tarapoto are fully equipped to offer trips to here and beyond. This “City of Palms’ in the San Martin province is hence a converging spot for hikers, gorge walkers, rafters, zip liners, kayakers, and all sorts of adventurers looking for a taste of the Peruvian tropics – particularly those who value the presence of a paved road back to reality.

Tarapoto Travel Guide

by Tony Dunnell Last updated Nov 6, 2019 City Guides 19 comments

tours tarapoto peru

Located on the eastern slope of a wide river valley, the high-jungle city of Tarapoto was a sleepy backwater town until the completion of the Carretera Marginal de la Selva (Jungle Highway) in the late-1960s. By the mid-1970s, this overland connection through Moyobamba and onto the coast had turned Tarapoto into a thriving settlement, and one that would soon become one of the key agricultural regions in Peru.

Tarapoto is now the dominant city in the San Martín Region of northern Peru , both economically and in terms of tourism. But don’t expect the jungle to be right on top of you in this sweltering city: Decades of agricultural development have seen rice fields and other plantations dominate the areas immediately surrounding the city. That said, it doesn’t take long at all to get away from the concrete walls, tin roofs and mototaxi buzz of Tarapoto and into beautiful landscapes of rolling hills and jungle-covered mountains spilling out their silvery waterfalls.

Note: I’ve been living in Tarapoto since 2009.

Things to Do in Tarapoto

Despite its position as the main tourist hub in San Martín, Tarapoto is still well off the typical tourist radar. And, to be honest, local authorities have done a lazy job — at best — of promoting all that Tarapoto has to offer. That, however, has its benefits for more adventurous travelers, who can come to Tarapoto and explore attractions independently (or with small local tour operators) without the annoyances — and crowds — associated with far more well-trodden attractions in more popular cities.

The city itself harbors few tourist attractions, apart from restaurants and a nationally-renowned nightlife. There’s the tiny Museo Regional de la Universidad Nacional de San Martín , which houses a few oddities both natural and manmade. But for me, Tarapoto’s most interesting urban attraction is the Tabacalera del Oriente , quite possibly the finest cigar “factory” in Peru. It’s all hand-rolled, and watching the process — and inhaling the sometimes overpowering vapors spilling off the tobacco — is fascinating. If you like cigars, the Tabacalera is a must-see; and if you don’t, it’s still an interesting one-hour tour.

Heading out of town is where Tarapoto really shines as a tourist destination. Numerous waterfalls tumble down through the surrounding jungle landscapes, most famously Ahuashiyacu Waterfall, a short ride out of town. Other waterfalls include Huacamaillo, Pucayaquillo and Pishurayacu, a bit further away from the city and sometimes requiring hour-long hikes through beautiful scenery.

For more hiking, head to the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area , which sits right on Tarapoto’s doorstep. The entrance to this lush jungle park is just a 15-minute mototaxi ride from the city center. Pay the S/10 entrance fee and head on in to explore miles of different trails, enchanting swimming spots and numerous waterfalls. Go early so you don’t run out of daylight and be careful if the river is high. One of the main trails involves crossing the river more than 15 times, and the trail itself is hard to follow. Alternatively, take a few beers and just swim in the first major pool — a great way to pass a few hours.

On the way to the park you’ll pass Centro URKU ( facebook.com/CentroURKU ), an excellent animal rescue center that’s well worth a visit. The S/10 entrance fee includes a guided walk to see the various birds and animals, all of which will eventually be released back into the wild.

Cataratas de Ahuashiyacu

Another popular natural attraction typically visited as a day-trip from Tarapoto is Laguna Azul . This extensive lake (roughly three miles in length) is a popular spot for boating, and the lakeside village of Sauce is easy to explore on foot. Accommodation options range from cheap and rustic to the more upscale El Sauce Resort. Allow an hour and a half to two hours for the trip from Tarapoto to Sauce, depending on your mode of transportation (car or combi/minibus) and the vehicle ferry to cross the Río Huallaga.

For a far closer natural swimming spot, head out to Laguna Venecia , a short ride outside of the city. This lagoon is a popular spot for families, with boats for the kids and a decent restaurant. Some weekends you can also watch motocross competitions at the nearby dirt track (as a side note, and if you’re interested in motorsports, try to catch a motokar cross competition near Tarapoto, in which a pilot and copilot race around dirt tracks driving modified mototaxis, the three-wheel rickshaws you see all around town).

If you’re interested in archaeology and the history of the region, head out to the Petroglyphs of Polish , about five miles from Tarapoto. It’s not an extensive site by any means, and there’s really no tourism infrastructure; sometimes you’ll find a man at the site to show you around, sometimes you’ll find a man at the site who seems incredibly hung over and totally uninterested. Either way, the petroglyphs remain something of a mystery — are they maps of the local area, or portals to the underworld? — and the whole site has a certain enigmatic vibe of long-lost history.

Nearby villages worth visiting include Lamas , a historically-significant hilltop settlement with its own indigenous community. Oh, and a massive replica castle built 10 or so years ago by an Italian expat (whether you love it or hate it, the views from the top are stunning). A small archaeological site lies out in Pamashto near Lamas; it’s a beautiful spot with a round stone structure that aligns with the winter solstice. As a side note, the fields around the site are a prime harvesting area for magic mushrooms.

Then there’s Chazuta , a small town to the south east of Tarapoto (about 18 miles as the crow flies, significantly further by road). Chazuta is known for its ceramics and old funerary urns, as well as more waterfalls.

Tarapoto is also a popular base for wildlife spotters and biologists. Researchers and amateur enthusiasts come to watch and study birds, butterflies and a huge variety of beautiful frogs .

Where to Stay in Tarapoto

The hostel scene is still slightly stunted in Tarapoto, at least in terms of modern hostels for international backpackers. There are, however, plenty of affordable guest-house-style hospedajes and alojamientos dotted around. The city’s hotels have improved in recent years, but not spectacularly so. Nondescript hotels still dominate, many of which are OK but nothing special.

Tambo Andina ( www.tamboandinahostel.com ) — This is probably the best cheap hostel in Tarapoto I’ve seen so far. Pretty communal areas, clean rooms and friendly owners. Good location, too. Rooms start at S/ 15 per person in the three-bed dorm with shared bathroom. Private rooms for around S/ 45.

El Mural ( www.elmuralhostel.com ) — I’ve met a lot of people who’ve stayed here, including friends, and they generally seem to love the place. It’s a sociable place to stay but without being a party hostel. It’s located in a quiet street about a mile from the Plaza de Armas.

Sol de Selva ( www.soldeselvaperu.com ) — A family-run hotel/guest house with a friendly atmosphere, comfortable rooms and central location.

La Patarashca ( www.lapatarashca.com ) — Room rates at La Patarashca have gone up in recent years, but it’s still a good option in the center of town with pretty communal spaces, plenty of greenery and a pool. Single S/ 90; matrimonial/double S/ 140.

Tucan Suites Aparthotel ( www.tucansuites.com ) — The first four-star accommodation in Tarapoto, Tucan Suites is a bright, modern and sophisticated hotel surrounding a central swimming pool. Located in the less hectic La Banda de Shilcayo district — but still just five minutes from the center — Tucan Suites is, quite probably, the best hotel in Tarapoto. And one of the most expensive. Standard suites S/ 329; panoramic suite S/ 499.

Restaurants in Tarapoto

The number of good restaurants in Tarapoto has increased greatly in the last few years, and visitors have a good amount of options to choose from.

Chifa Canton — My favorite chifa in Tarapoto. Try the tay pa especial con chaufa from the daytime menú (S/ 15.50 with wanton soup starter). Jr. Ramon Castilla 140.

Caja Criolla — Chunks of perfectly cooked crispy-crackling pork roasted in a caja china. Jr. Rioja 328.

Kiru Sushi — If you’re craving makis, then give this place a go. Sushi snobs might find it not quite up to standard, but I thought it was pretty good. Jr. San Martin 937.

Primer Puerto — This cevicheria singlehandedly changed my opinion about generally not eating ceviche so far from the coast. Plenty of non-fishy options, too. Jr. Ramirez Hurtado 461.

Pescados & Ajíes — Smaller than Primer Puerto, but quite possibly better. Right now, this is perhaps my favorite cevicheria in Tarapoto. Prices are pretty good, too. Jr. San Martin 624.

El Rincón Sureño — The best place in Tarapoto for steaks and other slabs of meat. Jr. Augusto B. Leguia 458.

El Norteño — Good all round, especially for dishes from the north coast of Peru. But I go to El Norteño for just one dish: the pollo cantones con arroz chaufa (Cantonese chicken with fried rice). Seriously, it’s sublime.  Jr. Santa María 246, La Banda de Shilcayo.

Street grills — Tarapoto is a great city for street grills, most of which open when the sun goes down. Typical options include large pieces of on-the-bone marinated chicken and Tarapoto classics such as chorizo, cecina (Peruvian-style smoked pork) and tacacho (a tasty ball of mashed-up green plantain).

Nightlife in Tarapoto

When I’m traveling around Peru and I say to a Peruvian guy that I live in Tarapoto, the ensuing conversation unfolds like this: 1) “Ah, I hear the women are beautiful in Tarapoto!” 2) “It’s a great city for a party, yeah?” 3) “But it’s really hot, right?” To all of these I respond in the affirmative.

Due to the sometimes oppressive heat, there’s never a bad time for a cold bottle of beer in Tarapoto, Peru. It’s a fun place for a night out, whether you stay in the bars or head out to the discotecas or, more likely, both.

The main bar strip in downtown Tarapoto is on and around block two of Jr. Lamas, just two blocks from the Plaza de Armas (main square). This street is known as the Calle de las Piedras. Here you’ll find popular bars like Stonewasi, La Montañita, Warmi (good for live music, just round the corner from Montañita) and Huascar Bar . Huascar is where my friends and I hang out, so feel free to join us at the weekend (ask for Tony). It’s a more affordable option than Stonewasi and La Montañita, so good for backpackers and locals who want to drink without blowing the weekly budget. For a more romantic drinking experience, try nearby El Artesano (Manco Capac 532) which has great views across La Banda de Shilcayo (the district below Tarapoto).

At around 11 p.m., people who want to dance start heading down to the Morales district where nearly all of Tarapoto’s big discotecas are located. Anaconda is arguably the most popular these days, and it’s safe and reasonably fun. One spot that gets lively and has a nice atmosphere is Bechilinos , which is a short walk from Anaconda. If you’re looking for something a bit more rough and ready, try Mega Estación, which gets very lively but attracts a few dodgy characters, so be a little more careful. These places are normally free to enter unless there’s a special event taking place. It takes about 10 minutes by mototaxi to get from the center of Tarapoto to the nightclub strip.

The vibe within the discotecas is normally welcoming, fun and safe — although the music sometimes sucks. Be careful when choosing a mototaxi to return to your hostel or hotel after exiting a club, especially if you’re on your own and coming back from somewhere like Mega. Mototaxi drivers sometimes pray on drunk revelers leaving the clubs in Morales, taking them a short distance before turning down a side road to meet up with awaiting accomplices. Then you get robbed. Best tactic: when you leave a club, don’t let a mototaxi driver choose you (some can be very enthusiastic); instead, always select a driver who isn’t trying too hard to get your attention.

Getting to and Around Tarapoto

  Travel to Tarapoto by air:

Tarapoto’s Guillermo del Castillo Paredes Airport has multiple daily flights to and from Lima (LAN, Star Peru, Peruvian Airlines), as well as flights to Iquitos , both starting at around $100. A mototaxi from Tarapoto’s airport to the city center costs S/ 7 or S/ 8.

In 2016, the regional SAETA airline began subsidized flights between Tarapoto and Chachapoyas , which is excellent news for travelers. Peruvians and legal residents of Peru can fly between Tarapoto and Chachapoyas (home to Kuelap Fortress, Gocta Waterfall and more) for just S/ 60. Foreign tourists, however, have to pay S/ 220, which is quite expensive for a 25-minute flight. You might have to book a few days in advance as the seats fill up quickly; there are daily departures, but the Piper Cheyenne III prop planes used by SAETA only hold nine passengers.

Travel to Tarapoto by bus or car:

It’s a long ride from Lima to Tarapoto, with two options available. You can take a bus up the north coast of Peru to Chiclayo and then cut inland through to Moyobamba and then to Tarapoto. This is the standard route currently used by most of the major bus companies, including Movil Tours and Civa. This route takes about 28 hours.

Alternatively, you can head directly from Lima to Tingo Maria (passing through Huánuco), avoiding the north coast altogether. From Tingo Maria, you can take a shared car (I recommend Pizana Express) north to Tarapoto, taking about eight hours if the road is in good condition. In theory, this route should be quicker, let’s say 22 hours. But you’ll probably have to do it in at least two stages, which could slow things down. The TEPSA bus company was running nonstop along this route — all the way from Lima to Tarapoto via Tingo Maria — advertised at 24 hours duration. Always check to see if this is available, as it’s a great alternative option.

Other overland destinations near Tarapoto include Moyobamba (about two hours by colectivo taxi or bus) and Yurimaguas . Yurimaguas is the embarkation point for boats to Iquitos. The road from Tarapoto to Yurimaguas is spectacular in parts, but the twists and turns through the mountains can easily make you queasy. The trip takes about an hour and a half and costs between S/ 10 and S/ 20 (minibus or colectivo taxi).

Getting around in Tarapoto:

You’ll see mototaxis buzzing around everywhere in Tarapoto — you’ll hear them, too, as they account for much of the city’s noise pollution. Like them or loathe them, they’ll take you anywhere in the city for between S/ 2 to S/ 6 (more at night).

For places further away, such as Lamas or Sauce, you can hop in to a colectivo taxi. You’ll need to find the correct paradero, or taxi terminal, that serves each destination — locals, especially, mototaxi drivers, can tell you where these are.

Car rental in Tarapoto:

I’ve never rented a car in Tarapoto, but a friend of mine recommends Amazon Car Rental. You can contact them through their Facebook page.

Safety in Tarapoto

Tarapoto is a safe city. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that it’s one of the safest cities in Peru.

Snatch theft is a problem as it is anywhere in Peru, so never leave your stuff lying around on table tops or bar tops, especially bags, wallets, laptops, smart phones etc.

And, as mentioned above in the nightlife section, be a little careful when exiting clubs in the Morales district, especially if you’re alone. Dodgy mototaxi drivers can easily take a drunk passenger down a side street to be robbed by awaiting accomplices. This isn’t common, but it does occur occasionally.

Internet connections in Tarapoto are surprisingly good, especially for what is quite a geographically isolated city. Internet cafes are dotted all over the place, and many cafes, bars and restaurants have free WiFi. You can read more about internet access in Peru here.

You’ll find banks and ATMs dotted around the Plaza de Armas and immediately surrounding streets. Reliable money changers sit outside the BCP just off the square on Jr. Maynas.

Hot. Sweaty. And hot. The annual average high is around 32 °C with an average low of 19 °C, with a mean average temperature of 25 °C. Moderate precipitation occurs on an annual basis, with a rainy season running from February through May, although this can sway from year to year.

Festivals and Events

June through August is the liveliest period of year in Tarapoto. The biggest event of the year is the Festival of San Juan, a huge party celebrated throughout most of the Peruvian jungle on June 24. Tarapoto celebrates its Fiestas Patronales and tourist week in the first half of July. More parties take place on and around August 20 to mark the foundation of the city.

Hi Tony, great guide. I am tryingto find out how I can get form Tarapoto to the Yambrasbamba district. I think there is a bus that goes to Chachapoyas along the 5N, but its nit clear if a: I can get off along the route and b: if buses are currently running. Are you able to advise? Thanks in advance!

Hannah

Just saw your page while searching to explore Northern Peru. I am from Australia and just came back from Amazon Boat trip. I am planing to go to Kuelap from Liam. I have about 5-6 days. Do you think it is enough time. I am thinking to fly to Tarapoto and take bus to Chachapoyas. Is this the only way? Any other recommendations ? Staying Chachapoyas 1 night is enough? I was thinking to take a 3-4 days tour but could not find it. Most of them 5 days including Amazon which I have been and do not have enough time. So I decided to myself. Any quick response will be appreciated because i am going book tomorrow flight to Tarapoto.

Cheers, hannah

Tony Dunnell

Hi Hannah. Sorry if this reply is too late. You can fly from Tarapoto to Chachapoyas, which will save you some time. I’d recommend staying at least two night in Chachapoyas so you have time to see Kuelap and Gocta (and there’s a lot more to see there, so maybe three of four days if possible). You can easily arrange tours in Chachapoyas, so you don’t need a three or four day package. Just go to one of the agencies on the main square and arrange your tour for that day (or the next day). Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks, Tony.

The swimming spots mentioned inside the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area, because of the jungle and so, are they any dangers – snakes, other predators-wise?

Snakes and spiders are potential hazards, but it’s highly unlikely you’ll have any problems while around the pools or swimming. You’re more likely to come close to a snake while walking along the trails, but they normally go away as soon as they hear you coming. So it’s not really something to worry about. Thanks, Tony.

I just came across this website and your wonderful travel tips for Tarapoto. I had no idea of its existence until I started researching the sites in the Chachapoyas area. We are interested in staying in the Gocta area for about 5f-6 days- perhaps at the Gocta Andes Lodge, but will likely fly into Tarapoto.

Although the Gocta Lodge offers tours which include airport pick-up, we are pretty independent travelers and would like to rent a car in Tarapoto, if it makes sense – i.e. it is safe and relatively easy to drive around this region. But I have not been able to find a car rental company at the airport or in Tarapoto. Can you recommend any? We would use it to drive from Tarapota to Gocta and to archaelogical sites like Kuelap and Leymebamba and Karajia. Now that we have read more about it, we might also do some exploring around Tarapoto too, if we can find a car at a reasonable rental rate. Does this make sense? Can you help us?

Many Thanks Christina

Hi Christina. Car rental isn’t common in Tarapoto (or in Chachapoyas, as far as I know). You could try contacting these guys to see if they’re still in business: https://www.facebook.com/CarRentalTarapoto/ That’s the only car rental company I know of around here. If you do manage to rent a car in Tarapoto, then it’s safe enough to go exploring — although there is a lot of rain at the moment, which can lead to road blockages. If you then drive to Chachapoyas (7 or 8 hours I think) then youll probably have to drive back to Tarapoto to return the car. But yeah, the tricky part is actually finding a car to rent. I’ll ask around again and let you know if I can come up with some more options. Thanks, Tony.

Christia

Thanks so much, I have reached out to the car rental agency you suggested. Meanwhile, we are planning to visit the Kuelap-Chachapoyas, Lemebamba, Karajia, Gocta region in late June or ear;y July. Will it be dry season then? Are the roads in this area navigable then? Are roads paved between the main archaeological sites?

WE will return the car to Tarapoto and so may spend a couple of days there. I am a chocoholic and would love to visit a cacao plantation – any thoughts on that too.

Many thanks for your goldmine of information

The roads are paved and generally in pretty good condition between the sites you mention, and June/July is in the dry season, so you should be fine (watch out for occasional potholes). In Tarapoto, you can visit the Orquidea chocolate factory. It’s a fairly short tour and I don’t think you get a tour of the plantation, but it’s worth looking into. Otherwise it should be easy enough to arrange a tour of a plantation somewhere. I’ll ask around about that and let you know if I hear anything. Thanks, Tony.

Thanks again Tony> That’s so helpful! Christina

John

Hello Tony. I recently visited eastern Peru for 2 weeks in search of species of reptiles and amphibians to photograph, and will be returning in January for 3 more weeks. I had communicated with Mark at Understory Enterprises on some good sites in the Tarapoto area that I visited and to which I plan on returning during my next trip. However, I am wondering more about access to and hiking trails in the Cordillera Escalera conservation area. During my first trip, I accessed it along various parts of the Tarapoto-Yurimaguas highway, but there were no hiking trails (aside from the short ones that provided access to the waterfalls). Is the road to which you are referring above with the trails the same one due north of Tarapoto along which the Alto Shilcayo conservation area is also located, and if so, does it too have hiking trails? Lastly, does the road just to the west that goes by Mirador Palmiche also have trails off of it, or does anyplace else in that general area have hiking trails? Thanks.

Hi John. The main trekking trails that I know of are in the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area, and to the various waterfalls around Tarapoto. Then there are plenty of other trails leading all over the place, but they’re not signposted or anything, they’re just the trails that the local farmers use. I’ve no idea if the road that goes by Mirador Palmiche has trails off it. You’d really have to go take a look, or find a local guide who knows that area. If you need more info when you arrive, get in touch and I’ll see if I can put you in contact with someone. Thanks, Tony.

Louise

Hi Tony, i have been searching information for going to Laguna Azul from Tarapoto without a tour but only very limited info. Do you know where excatly in Tarapoto i can take the combi to Laguna Azul? We wish to head to take the combi once we land at Tarapoto airport. Thank you!

Hi Louise. I think there are a few different paraderos where you can find combis to Sauce/Laguna Azul. I know for sure that there’s one on the edge of the Banda de Shilcayo district of Tarapoto as you head out on the Fernando Belaunde Terry road (a mototaxi can take you there for three or four soles). You’ll find a few companies at this paradero/terminal that go to Sauce. If you take a look at this map, it’s pretty next to the Mitsubishi Dealer marked on the map. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Tarapoto/@-6.4982304,-76.3547128,17.74z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x91b0a08d45de2063:0xdc027cb4043f446c!8m2!3d-6.4824784!4d-76.3726891

Hi Amy. Let me know if you want to meet up next time you’re in Tarapoto. My friends and I hang out at my bar here; send me an email via the contact form (or message me on Facebook) if you want to have a drink when you’re in town. Cheers, Tony.

Tarapoto: 10 activities to do in this destination

Tarapoto: 10 activities to do in this destination

Tarapoto enjoys an excellent geographical location, a modern airport and well-maintained highways, with which you can connect to all destinations in the north-east of Peru , and that will make your trip a pleasure.

From bathing in one of its natural pools formed by waterfalls to visiting an animal rescue center. The City of Palm Trees offers you various activities.

History of Tarapoto:

Established on Aug 20, 1782, Tarapoto celebrates its founding annually with a week-long fiesta.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the city grappled with a challenging phase, attracting terrorists and drug traffickers, earning a precarious reputation.

Fujimori's presidency in the 1990s marked a turning point, bringing a swift resolution to these issues. Nowadays, the biggest challenge might just be navigating through the swarm of mototaxis crowding the central streets!

Things to Do in Tarapoto

How to get to Tarapoto?

You can get to Tarapoto by plane, from Lima airport (1 hour) and Iquitos (45 minutes), or by road, with buses leaving from the city of Lima (20 hours) and Chiclayo (14 hours).

Things to Do in Tarapoto:

Enjoy yourself at the plaza de armas:.

Tarapoto's Plaza de Armas buzzes with activity, making it an unmissable hotspot in the city. The best time to visit is around 6:00 pm when the entire city seems to converge here. Witness local artists painting, sketching, and live singers performing right in the heart of the plaza. If hunger strikes, indulge in some traditional snacks available around the area. These treats include chifles (thinly sliced and fried plantains), mani confitado (sweetened peanuts), and cotton candy (a classic favorite). If none of these tempt your taste buds, fret not! There's an array of other options to choose from. Among all the activities in Tarapoto, this experience stands out as a must-try.

Explore the Local Gastronomy:

Make it a point to explore eateries serving authentic jungle cuisine! Food takes center stage in our discussions because jungle delicacies are truly one-of-a-kind and incredibly flavorful! A comprehensive list of things to do in Tarapoto wouldn't be complete without savoring the local dishes, and no Tarapoto excursion is fulfilling without experiencing the jungle's culinary delights. You won't find many formal restaurants dishing out traditional fare; instead, look for bustling food stalls offering a taste of the region. These local treats feature delights like anticucho (skewered meat and vegetables), cecina, and chorizo (smoked pork specialties). While dining in the jungle, you'll encounter an abundance of fresh barbecued delicacies and, trust me, the barbecued bananas are a must-try! And here's the cherry on top: it's all incredibly affordable!

Experience the Ahuashiyacu Waterfalls:

Merely 20 minutes away from the city, the Ahuashiyacu waterfall stands as the most renowned and frequented cascade in the entire San Martín region. Seeking a serene and nature-infused day excursion? This spot is an absolute gem. Discover a tranquil natural pool blessed with crystal-clear, refreshing waters. Don't rush; take a moment to marvel at the array of exotic birds and flora surrounding the area – it's an experience worth savoring!

Sample the Unique Jungle Beverages:

In the jungle, iconic drinks reign supreme, boasting alluring names and widespread popularity. Among these, 7 raíces stands out, a blend of local roots infused with aguardiente. Historically consumed for its health benefits akin to emoliente, nowadays it's mostly savored for its enjoyable effects! Another must-try is uvachado, a renowned sweet wine cherished as the jungle's signature drink. Caution is advised – these beverages wield considerable potency; a single shot sets the stage for your evening! Crafted from a blend of aguardiente (an alcohol distilled from natural roots and local fruits), these concoctions are available at select bars, adding an adventurous twist to your jungle experience.

Bird Watching Adventure:

For nature enthusiasts seeking an immersive wildlife experience, here's a treat. Birdwatching, a relatively recent addition to Tarapoto's activities, involves observing and studying the diverse avian species thriving in the region. Numerous bird-watching routes sprawl near the city, offering enthusiasts various options to explore. Among the most frequented routes are the Circuito Ecoturístico Alto Shilcayo and Bosques Secos de Juan Guerra, yet there's an array of choices awaiting discovery. Don't fret, as there are guides available to enhance your birding experience. This is yet another fantastic and cost-free activity to indulge in while in Tarapoto. Don't forget to pack a pair of binoculars to heighten your chances of spotting these magnificent creatures!

Explore the Lamas Castle:

Crafted by a wealthy Italian individual, this medieval fortress stands as a testament to exquisite craftsmanship. Utilizing the region's natural stones, the builder painstakingly shaped and molded each stone by hand, as recounted in his memoirs. Rising majestically to five floors, each level offers breathtaking panoramas of the surroundings, notably the Rio Mayo valley. Here, a captivating intersection of two worlds unfolds—the fusion of European influences melding seamlessly with the rich heritage of Native American culture.

River Rafting Excitement:

For thrill-seekers craving extreme adventures, this one's a winner. Brace yourself for an incredible escapade along the Mayo River—a perfect activity to share with friends and family. This thrilling experience immerses you in nature, offering glimpses of diverse avian life and the nearby riverbank communities. Get ready for an adrenaline surge while navigating the rapids, creating an unforgettable blend of excitement and natural beauty!

Enjoy a Day at Laguna Sauce:

We highly recommend dedicating an entire day to this splendid experience! The expansive Laguna Sauce , famously known as the Blue Lagoon or Laguna Azul , captivates with its mesmerizing azure waters. Rent a small boat or opt for guided tours to delve deeper into its most enchanting corners, offering encounters with exotic jungle wildlife. Along the shores, discover quaint rustic restaurants, perfect for a delightful lakeside lunch. Indulge in locally caught fresh fish paired with the delectable bellacos bananas—an exclusive jungle variety. And don't miss out on sampling the array of local beverages for a complete and satisfying exploration of this breathtaking locale.

Take a Dip in the Rivers:

Tarapoto boasts proximity to several nearby rivers, all conveniently situated within a short 10 to 15-minute drive from the city. If you're seeking a change from pool swimming but still yearn for aquatic adventures, seize this opportunity to explore something distinct. Relax by the riverbanks and relish the mountain-fresh waters, offering a refreshing respite. Consider packing a picnic and spend quality time with your friends in this serene setting. This activity offers priceless moments, an invaluable experience to cherish with your loved ones.

Discover Pumarinri and Pucayaquillo:

For a leisurely jungle jaunt, this trip is a fitting choice. Your escapade kicks off at Pucayaquillo waterfall, approximately 45 minutes away from the city. Revel in the opportunity to swim in the natural pool, carved by the cascading waterfall, and bask in the breathtaking scenery at your own pace. En route, be sure to include a visit to the Pumarinri Lodge, where an enticing jungle-themed lunch awaits to tantalize your taste buds.

Tarapoto: 09 activities to do in this destination

The City of Palm Trees offers a wide variety of activities such as strolling through a large lake surrounded by vegetation to bathing in its waterfalls.

The Tarapoto destination is located at the foot of the Cordillera Escalera , a natural conservation area that is home to abundant dense tropical forests and countless imposing waterfalls, which are the home of happiness.

Tarapoto is the starting point to enter any destination in the Peruvian jungle , not only because it has an airport, but also because it acts as a node interconnecting the different San Martin destinations with the rest of the regions of Peru by road.

Once in Tarapoto, you will have realized that you are in the low jungle due to its sunny and hot climate, with temperatures around 38 degrees. From here, you can decide which course to take.

The city of Tarapoto differs from the others for being the commercial heart of the San Martín region, a fact that makes it the ideal place to enjoy the delicious and recognized Amazonian gastronomy, with national prestige, in its many and varied restaurants.

Here, you will not only be able to taste the main typical dishes of the jungle, such as smoked fish, such as patarashca; the chonta salad, the tacaco with cecina, etc., but also fusion dishes that are a real pleasure of sensations and that you cannot miss.

If you want to reduce the heat and you like adventure, just 15 minutes from the center of Tarapoto , start the Alto Shilcayo ecotourism circuit, in the Cordillera Escalera, where you will feel the immediate disconnection from the city to reconnect with the purest jungle that Tarapoto has for you.

A trek through one of the places where you can appreciate a large number of endemic amphibians, such as the typical colored frogs, and the greatest diversity of birds in the world, since Andean, Amazonian and Huallaga dry forest species converge here.

If you prefer another alternative route, you can travel to the town of San Antonio de Cumbaza and learn about the process of making different types of wines with regional grapes and do a tasting, together with the same local producers, and then bathe in one of its waterfalls. , such as the Huacamaillo Waterfall.

The Tarapoto destination has hotels, hostels and ecolodges equipped to receive tourists at all levels, both in the city itself and in the surroundings, so that your trip is pleasant and full of new experiences.

Discover Tarapoto and live an Amazonian experience!

The 8 places you can not miss in Tarapoto

tours tarapoto peru

Land of exuberant vegetation, impressive waterfalls, lush forests and hills with great cliffs; Tarapoto is a natural paradise with a large number of attractions to discover. Located in the department of San Martín, this Amazonian city is the gateway to the jungle of northeastern Peru and the starting point for dozens of outdoor excursions that await you.

The 'City of Palms', as it is known, is today the main tourist and commercial source of this region. Thousands of people arrive every year to enjoy the experience of a boat ride through the Blue Lagoon, tour the majestic castle of Lamas, cool off in the Ahuashiyacu waterfalls or take a spectacular walk through the Altomayo Protected Forest. As you can see, Tarapoto is a wonderful destination for lovers of nature, fun and adventure.

Ahuashiyacu Waterfall

Located 20 minutes from Tarapoto, it is one of the most visited and famous destinations in the entire region. It is the ideal place to enjoy a refreshing bath and rest accompanied by the sound of falling water. To get there, you must take a public bus or motorcycle taxi from the city center and, after entering the reserve, walk for about 15 minutes. In the surroundings of the waterfall, you can find a viewpoint that offers a fantastic view of Tarapoto.

22 km away from the city (about 25 minutes by car, approximately), is this charming town, one of the oldest in the jungle of Peru and famous for preserving its traditions, crafts and dances. Its population is made up of very friendly people who speak a particular mixture of Quechua with various aboriginal languages.

Here, you can visit the wonderful medieval-style castle built 15 years ago on a huge hill. Inside, you will be able to appreciate impressive decorations and paintings, imposing walls made of rock and balconies with a privileged view. It was built by an Italian businessman, who, when he first arrived in this place, fell in love with its beautiful landscapes, which reminded him a lot of his native country.

On the other hand, you can also visit the Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area, which brings together a great diversity of flora and fauna.

Altomayo Protection Forest

Located two and a half hours from Tarapoto, very close to the town of Rioja, it is a protected area that promotes ecotourism and environmental conservation. It covers a terrain that goes from 800 to 4000 m a.s.l. whose diversity of microclimates give rise to a wide variety of habitats for numerous species.

This place is also home to native communities that offer excursions to different parts of the area. An unmissable visit is to the caves, where you can see the cock of the rocks and the yellow-tailed woolly monkey. Another destination is the Playa de las Mariposas, where you will see an amazing spectacle full of color.

The Blue Lagoon

Thanks to its great natural beauty, this place is one of the most important tourist attractions in Tarapoto. It is surrounded by grasslands that are home to a great diversity of species and also dreamlike landscapes, so taking a walk on its waters is an incredible experience.

If adventure is your thing, you can also take trekking routes and get in touch with nature. Many visitors come here to spend a refreshing day in the middle of the Amazon and also enjoy the nearby tourist resorts that offer exquisite cuisine and various activities such as canopy, canoeing, artisanal fishing, and jet ski tours. Without a doubt, a great destination to spend pleasant moments with the family.

Polish petroglyphs

For archeology lovers, this is the ideal destination to learn more about the history of this region. It is located 8 km from Tarapoto and has a large number of figures of animals, plants and people engraved in stone. Although the date of antiquity of these symbols has not yet been determined, historians say that they could correspond to the Chachapoyas culture.

The Polish Petroglyphs have an important artistic and social value for the city of Tarapoto, as they represent the religious beliefs of the ancient settlers who settled in this region. It is an attraction that receives more and more visitors for its magic and mystery.

Delve into the jungle in Alto Mayo

This region of Tarapoto is full of activities in which to enjoy a day in nature. On the one hand, here is the city of Moyobamba, famous mainly for the great variety of orchids that grow in this place and where you can take a walk through one of its greenhouses.

Following the road to the north is the source of the Tioyacu River, a beautiful place and very well conditioned to receive tourists. First, you will have to walk a small path until you reach the source of the river, where its crystal clear waters attract attention. Then it's time to bathe: you'll find small waterfalls and natural water pools where you'll want to stay all day.

How to get there Alto Mayo: from Tarapoto, you can take a bus or a taxi that will take you to Moyobamba, the Tioyacu River or any of the other tourist attractions in this region. However, to make the most of your time, the best option is to hire a tour, with which you make stops at different points. At Denomades we offer the Alto Mayo tour, with visits to these and other places in the area.

Explore the depths in the Diamond Cave

Also in the Alto Mayo region is the Cueva del Diamante, ideal for those who like caving and exploring enigmatic places. Here there are stalactites and stalagmites, as well as tall natural columns that seem to be supporting the cave.

This is a space that is very different from anything you can find in Tarapoto and perfect for taking a walk among curious rock formations.

How to get to Cueva del Diamante: this cavern is located in the district of Naranjos, almost 200 kilometers northwest of Tarapoto. You can take a bus or a taxi in the city to this destination or take advantage of the visit to Alto Mayo to make a stop here.

Get up close to exotic animals at the Urku Center

Very close to the Ahuashiyacu waterfall is the Urku Center, the best place to get up close and get to know the wild fauna that inhabits Tarapoto. Here they take in animals to rehabilitate them and return them to their natural habitat and, meanwhile, coexist with species of all kinds.

The most entertaining thing about the place is that you can walk with funny monkeys by your side, who climb on your shoulder when you least expect it and accompany you all the way.

How to get to the Urku Center: The Urku Center is very close to the city of Tarapoto, so you can get there by motorcycle taxi or even on foot if you like to explore the destinations you visit on foot. You can also get to this place on our Tarapoto City Tour.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
