DS9 Proves Star Trek: Voyager Producer Was Wrong About Season 3's Prison Episode

  • Both Star Trek: DS9 and Voyager showcase similar prison episodes, but DS9's story was more effective
  • Voyager producer Kenneth Biller initially struggled with making Harry Kim and Tom Paris' mental deterioration believable in Voyager's "The Chute."
  • Voyager used alien technology as a plot device to explain their mental state effectively but could have looked to DS9 for guidance.

One episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine proved that Kenneth Biller was wrong about the challenges of Star Trek: Voyager 's season 3 prison episode. Voyager and DS9 were sister shows in the Star Trek timeline , running concurrently with each other for several seasons. Although there was a lot of similarity between the two show's creative teams, producer and writer Ken Biller only worked on Voyager during the 1990s era of the Star Trek franchise.

One early Voyager episode that Biller worked on was season 3, episode 3, "The Chute," a dark story revolving around Tom Paris' (Robert Duncan McNeill) and Harry Kim's (Garrett Wang) time in a brutal alien prison. After being falsely accused of a terrorist attack, Kim and Paris were held in the prison while the USS Voyager's crew worked on a way to save them. Biller found writing the episode a challenge for one specific reason , but could have looked to a similar DS9 episode for the blueprint of how to make the story work.

Star Trek: Voyager Cast & Character Guide

Ds9 proved that ken biller was wrong about star trek: voyager’s kim and paris prison episode, ds9 did a similar episode that pulled off what biller found challenging.

Biller thought Tom and Harry's mental deterioration in prison wasn't believable given the short length of time they were incarcerated, but DS9 and the character of Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) proved that severe mental degradation was possible thanks to a particular sci-fi concept. Perhaps because Biller wasn't the original creator of "The Chute," he found the story challenging to pull off and discussed his ups and downs during the writing process with Cinefantastique shortly after the episode aired. Read Biller's full quote about "The Chute" below:

"It was sort of a left-over story from the Michael Piller era, and I struggled with it because it was a prison picture essentially. Michael wanted this to be an episode about Kim's humanity being tested. I thought it was basically an impossible task, because every single prison movie that has ever been successful that I can think of depends on one thing in particular, which is the passage of time. All take place over years, if not decades. Given the fact it would be impossible given the restrictions of our show to strand Paris and Kim for more than several days, it seemed therefore impossible to bring Kim to the brink."

On the surface, Biller's frustrations with "The Chute" are understandable. However, DS9 aired season 4, episode 19, "Hard Time," earlier that same year, which followed Miles O'Brien's recovery from his memories of a 20-year prison sentence. Rather than actually serving 20 years, O'Brien's memories had been implanted and altered to make the passage of time feel longer. O'Brien's incarceration and circumstances were extremely similar to Kim and Paris, and Biller could have used "Hard Time" as an example of how to make their mental states believable in "The Chute's" condensed time frame.

How Star Trek: Voyager’s “The Chute” Still Managed To Make Kim And Paris’ Mental Deterioration Believable

"the chute" made its plot work with a different story device.

As it was, Biller ended up using a different device to make Kim and Paris lose their minds, in the form of alien technology that was specifically designed to make prisoners more aggressive and paranoid. This had the desired effect and was perhaps even a good choice for the episode, given that copying DS9 so soon after "Hard Time's" release could have felt repetitive . However, Biller's frustration with "The Chute's" contrivances wasn't warranted, and a quick look at other shows beyond Star Trek: Voyager could have alleviated some of his concerns.

DS9 Proves Star Trek: Voyager Producer Was Wrong About Season 3's Prison Episode

We finally know why NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft stopped communicating — scientists are working on a fix

The first spacecraft to explore beyond the solar system started spouting gibberish late last year. Now, NASA knows why.

A spacecraft with a white disk and a long metal bar against a purplish background.

NASA engineers have discovered the cause of a communications breakdown between Earth and the interstellar explorer Voyager 1. It would appear that a small portion of corrupted memory exists in one of the spacecraft's computers.

The glitch caused Voyager 1 to send unreadable data back to Earth, and is found in the NASA spacecraft's flight data subsystem (FDS). That's the system responsible for packaging the probe's science and engineering data before the telemetry modulation unit (TMU) and radio transmitter send it back to mission control.

The source of the issue began to reveal itself when Voyager 1 operators sent the spacecraft a "poke" on March 3, 2024. This was intended to prompt FDS to send a full memory readout back to Earth.

The readout confirmed to the NASA team that about 3% of the FDS memory had been corrupted, and that this was preventing the computer from carrying out its normal operations.

Related: NASA finds clue while solving Voyager 1's communication breakdown case

Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to leave the solar system and enter interstellar space in 2012. Voyager 2 followed its spacecraft sibling out of the solar system in 2018, and is still operational and communicating well with  Earth.

After 11 years of interstellar exploration, in Nov. 2023, Voyager 1's binary code — the computer language it uses to communicate with Earth — stopped making sense. Its 0's and 1's didn't mean anything anymore.

Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!

"Effectively, the call between the spacecraft and the Earth was still connected, but Voyager's 'voice' was replaced with a monotonous dial tone," Voyager 1's engineering team previously  told Space.com .

a groovy poster shows a space probe with large white satellite dish mounted on a metal frame body with various length instruments jut out. surrounding colors are gold and orange, with a dark hombre background.

The team strongly suspects this glitch is the result of a single chip that's responsible for storing part of the affected portion of the FDS memory ceasing to work.

Currently, however, NASA can’t say for sure what exactly caused that particular issue. The chip could have been struck by a high-speed energetic particle from space or, after 46 years serving Voyager 1, it may simply have worn out.

—  NASA's interstellar Voyager probes get software updates beamed from 12 billion miles away

—  NASA Voyager 2 spacecraft extends its interstellar science mission for 3 more years

Voyager 1 currently sits around 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, which means it takes 22.5 hours to receive a radio signal from it — and another 22.5 hours for the spacecraft to receive a response via the Deep Space Network's antennas. Solving this communication issue is thus no mean feat.

Yet, NASA scientists and engineers are optimistic they can find a way to help FDS operate normally, even without the unusable memory hardware.

Solving this issue could take weeks or even months, according to NASA — but if it is resolved, Voyager 1 should be able to resume returning science data about what lies outside the solar system.

Review: ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Season 4 On Blu-ray Brings It All Together

| April 15, 2024 | By: Matt Wright 3 comments so far

Before the fifth ( and now final ) season arrives this fall, the fourth season of the adult animated Star Trek comedy arrives on physical media this week in the USA.

Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season Four

Creator Mike McMahan and his team have consistently impressed with each successive season of Lower Decks . This fourth season could be considered the unifying theory of everything Lower Decks . Season 4 ties junior officers from all over the quadrant, some of which we’ve met before, into the namesake and inspiration of the show ( Next Generation’s “Lower Decks”), and that episodes’s roots which go even further back to TNG’s “The First Duty.” Of course the series continues to have meta fun with fan questions, such as whether Tom Paris and Nick Locarno are the same person — they’re not. The latest season also expands on Trek canon, such as exploring Orion culture thanks to Tendi (and her alternate life as Mistress of the Winter Constellations), which is most welcome. Despite being one of the more well known (and infamous) species in Trek we still know so little about the Orion way of life.

A young wide-eyed Mariner tries to impress upperclassman Sito Jaxa

While there’s a lot of fun and often irreverent comedy, something that continues to stand out is the general optimism of the show and the caring that nearly every character demonstrates. There’s been clear character growth from season to season, and this season shows us Mariner getting to the roots of her disdain for rank (and thus promotion) and procedure.

Personal favorites this season include: “I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee” (it scores points for the title alone, and of course the episode gives us the terrifyingly cute Moopsy), “Parth Ferengi’s Heart Place,” “Caves,” and the season finale “Old Friends, New Planets.”

The Blu-ray Set

The episodes and special features are on two Blu-ray discs. As has become standard for these CBS/Paramount+ releases, each disc has the names of the episodes it contains printed on them as well as a full listing for the set on the inside front/back of the case.

Video Quality

Lower Decks is a modern high-definition-era cartoon; as such, everything looks sharp, the lines are crisp, and the primary colors of the uniforms pop. The cartoon looked great streaming and looks a bit better here on disc.

Audio Quality

As we’ve come to expect, the episodes have losslessly compressed DTS-HD MA 5.1 channel soundtracks. While this is standard for a TV show release, the sound design is excellent as always, we’d expect nothing less from the Emmy nominated team.

Special Features

The season set comes with a couple of new documentaries, and a generous five audio commentaries — which means half the episodes have a commentary, pretty cool.

Featurettes

Lower Decktionary: Setting Up Season 4 (9 minutes) – Showrunner Mike McMahan talks about the first episode of season 4, set on the USS Voyager. Including where we left off with the crew at the end of season 3, and the goals for the season. We hear from Eugene Cordero about how he couldn’t believe there was a “cheese episode” of Voyager , also Tawny Newsome, Noël Wells, and Jack Quaid chime in about getting promotions at the beginning of the season, rather than the end. Mike McMahan also weighs in on the Tuvix ethical dilemma.

Old Friends (28 mins) –  Mike McMahan starts off saying how he much he loved “ wej Duj ” from season two, and that he realized this season’s cold opens could be vignettes showing various alien ships and their disaffected lower deckers. He then takes the audience through his process to develop Mariner’s backstory, tying it into the show’s inspiration: TNG “Lower Decks”, and how they handled incorporating the legacy characters, including tracking down Shannon Fill (who had retired from acting) to come back to do the Starfleet Academy flashbacks. Robert Duncan McNeill, Shannon Fill, and Wil Wheaton meet up (virtually) for the first time in years to discuss the filming and the legacy of TNG: “The First Duty.”

Episode commentaries

There are audio commentaries on five episodes. As one might imagine, with the amount of camaraderie seen at conventions and in previous documentaries, and the fact that a lot of these folks are voice actors and comedians, these commentaries are a good listen.

  • “Twovix” with Jack Quaid, Mike McMahan, and Brad Winters
  • “Something Borrowed, Something Green” with Tawny Newsome, Noël Wells, and Gabrielle Ruiz
  • “Parth Ferengi’s Heart Place” with Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Chase Masterson, and Mike McMahan
  • “The Inner Fight” with Dawnn Lewis, Tawny Newsome, and Mike McMahan
  • “Old Friends, New Planets” with Robert Duncan McNeill, and Mike McMahan

Final Thoughts

For most people, this Blu-ray is the highest quality way to watch Lower Decks , so for those who care about getting the best audio-video experience, this is the set for them. It’s also the only way to get the episode commentaries. Recommended for collectors as well as anyone who wants an offline copy of the show; this includes people who cannot or do not want to stream the show and folks who have concerns about the fleeting rights to streaming media.

McMahan, I know you worship Star Trek, but just commission the designers to come up with original posters please. You don’t have to copy *EVERYTHING* from classic Trek.

When I read this I get the impression you don’t really get Lower Decks.

Yeah, purchasing something digitally isn’t actually “ownership,” and we’ve all seen that streaming isn’t the magical vault where movies and TV will live forever.

If you want to make sure you have access to Lower Decks (or any film or show for that matter), physical media is the way to go.
