Day 1: Sydney to outback New South Wales

Queen Adelaide Restaurant, Indian Pacific © Journey Beyond

Afternoon Board at Sydney 's  Central Station  and settle into your cabin, where you'll spend the afternoon taking in the scenery as it transforms from skyscrapers and traffic lights to the forested valleys and sandstone cliffs of the stunning  Blue Mountains . Your on-board radio includes an audio commentary option.

The journey's eastbound service (Perth to Sydney) includes an off-train excursion in the majestic Blue Mountains , which includes visits to the majestic Three Sisters at Echo Point and the spectacular Jamison Valley.

Evening As the sun sets behind mountain ranges you will begin to enter the more arid regions of New South Wales , characterised by hardy mulga (a small native Australian tree) and vast plains. After dinner in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant , meet fellow guests in the  Outback Explorer Lounge  for a welcome drink.

Day 2: Broken Hill to Adelaide

Indian Pacific, outback SA © Journey Beyond

Indian Pacific, outback South Australia © Journey Beyond

Morning The day begins in  Broken Hill , formerly a booming mining town, which has inspired an array of artists over the years with its distinctive desert landscape. On a one-hour walking tour, explore the city's iconic  Living Desert Sculptures  then visit the  Pro Hart Gallery,  where you'll learn all about one of Australia's most celebrated artists, whose works capture the spirit of the outback.

Afternoon After an onboard lunch, the journey continues into the green and golden fields of South Australia 's food bowl. You have a choice between several off-train excursions. You can opt to spend the afternoon and evening in the picturesque  Barossa Valley  or McLaren Vale wine region, the charming heritage town of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills or a private guided tour of the South Australian Museum . All tours include drinks and dinner. Afterwards, all guests rejoin the train in Adelaide to begin the journey across the Nullarbor Plain.

On the eastbound service, which includes a morning stop in Adelaide , your excursion options include an Adelaide city sights coach tour, a progressive breakfast at the famous Adelaide Central Markets , a guided tour of Adelaide Oval or a city and river precinct walking tour.

Day 3: Nullarbor Plain to Rawlinna

Off-train dinner at Rawlinna, Indian Pacific, WA © Journey Beyond

Morning You’ll be greeted at sunrise by the striking, raw beauty of the Nullarbor. Taking its name from the Latin for "no trees", this vast outback plain has bewildered and inspired generations of Australians and visitors alike. A seemingly endless expanse of rusty earth and hardy outback shrubs, the Nullarbor covers 200,000 square kilometres (77,000 square miles) of South Australia and Western Australia and is considered a "bucket list"' experience.

Afternoon Having entered Western Australia , celebrate crossing Australia's most famous plain with a special dinner in the remote outpost of Rawlinna. Here, guests are invited to disembark and partake in a traditional long-table dinner under the bright stars of the outback sky (seasonal). Surrounded by nothing but vast sheep stations (the nearest town, Kalgoorlie , is more than 400 kilometres, or 250 miles away), this is one alfresco dining experience to remember.

The Indian Pacific eastbound service (Perth to Sydney) offers an additional excursion in the wild west gold rush town of Kalgoorlie.

Day 4: Outback Western Australia to Perth

Indian Pacific, Adelaide, SA © Journey Beyond

Indian Pacific, Adelaide, South Australia © Journey Beyond

Morning The scenery transforms again as the Indian Pacific continues through the picturesque  Avon Valley , a patchwork of rolling hills and winding streams. After passing fertile farmland and the occasional hot air balloon, the journey nears the end as Perth's outer city limits come into view.

Afternoon When the Indian Pacific arrives in the west after its epic transcontinental crossing, you have the choice to be transferred directly to your accommodation or to take an optional upgrade tour to explore Perth . On the Perth tour, you'll admire magnificent city views from Kings Park , travel along the Swan River and picturesque foreshore parklands, see Subiaco with its trendy boutiques and restaurants, and Claremont with its upmarket shopping and famous 'Millionaire's Row.' You'll also enjoy city landmarks like the WACA Cricket Ground , Town Hall, Perth Mint , Parliament House, Crown Casino and Barracks Arch .

Perth provides seamless transport options to access beautiful Rottnest Island and its adorable quokkas, the groovy culture and art scene of portside Fremantle , the vineyards of the Swan Valley and charming Cottesloe Beach where you can enjoy a swim in the Indian Ocean. To enjoy the rich heritage of Perth, visit Barrack Square to see The Bell Tower, Perth Mint, the WA Maritime Museum and roam the winding streets of Fremantle before touring its World Heritage-listed prison .

Sydney to Adelaide

Travel through beautiful rock formations, the infamous outback and the hauntingly beautiful Blue Mountains in a two day and one night journey. Take the option of off-the-train experiences such as Broken Hill’s Gem mining town and expand on your trip’s potential to fulfill your dreams.

Sydney to Perth

In four days and three nights, this transcontinental journey will take you on the path of a pioneer. Through the bush, the goldfields, the coast, ghost towns and wineries, you will be on your own personal trek to explore the vast expanse that is the entirety of the continent. Nine meals are included in the journey, but take advantage of the stops that are planned and learn more about the culture of each city through its food, music and history.

Adelaide to Perth

For those enthused by the outback and spending time in it, coupled with the best foodie element in train travel, this three day and two night excursion is perfect. Stop and have a dinner under the desert stars, see a sheep station and how farmers live and thrive in the environment.

All trip packages include boarding, meals, wine and excursions along with the best company a traveler could ask for. There are also optional excursions for an additional fee available should you choose to add on an adventure.

How much does it cost to ride the Indian Pacific train in Australia?

The cost for an Indian Pacific train excursion ranges from $875 per person to $2,345 per person and beyond.

Each train trip varies with each package. The longer the trip, the more side excursions and meals will be included. The longest trip is four days and three nights, while the shortest trip is two days and one night.

Is the Indian Pacific all-inclusive?

The Indian Pacific is all-inclusive with meals and excursions included in the price.

You will enjoy three meals a day aboard the Indian Pacific. For those times that you need a snack, head to the Outback Explorer lounge for a beverage and a bite to eat. Platinum passengers can enter the Platinum Club and partake in cocktails, barista services and hor de vours between meals.

What are the cabins like on the Indian Pacific?

The cabins on board the Indian Pacific are luxurious and comfortable. There are three levels of cabins that can be reserved depending on what accommodations you require. Although there are different levels of services and cabins, all accommodations excel in comfort and style adding to the enjoyment of your vacation.

Gold Service

Gold service allows for either twin or single accommodations. Twin berths feature en suite bathrooms, while single berths have shared toilets and showers in each carriage. Beds convert to either a double or triple seat during the day depending on berth size. Meals can be enjoyed in-room or in the dining car. The Gold Service is the most popular service chosen by travelers.

Platinum Service

Platinum service allows for extras such as a full-sized ensuite cabins with views on either side of the train, premium toiletries and use of the First Class Platinum Carriage. Comfortable seating with ottomans and tables by day, fold down to single or double beds by night. This is a service for the most discerning traveler.

Chairman’s Service

The Chairman’s Service will welcome you to the most luxurious rail carriage in Australia. This carriage accommodates up to eight people and includes three Platinum Double cabins and one Platinum Twin cabin. Enjoy a lounge that is reminiscent more of a grand living room than a train berth. Access to all Platinum Level shared amenities is granted for times you want to mingle with others.

Can I put my car on the Indian Pacific?

You can transport your car on the Indian Pacific if the need shall arise from April to September.

Take the train to your destination and unload your transported car for the road trip of a lifetime back to where you began. On the Indian Pacific you can transport your car from April to September. Load all your needed holiday gear into your car and let the vacation continue once you reach your destination by train.

What is the difference between Gold and Platinum Class on the Indian Pacific?

The difference between Gold and Platinum Class on the Indian Pacific is cabin and bed size along with the quality of products offered during your stay. Platinum Class also offers a separate First Class lounge for passengers.

What is the best cabin on the Indian Pacific?

The best cabin on the Indian Pacific is the Chairman’s service. The Chairman’s Service allows for a large family or group to stay in a carriage with an adjoining private lounge with plush seating, fine fabrics and views on the right and left sides of the train. The lounge is spacious and luxurious and allows for a traveling party to have a private experience as well as join in on First Class amenities afforded Platinum passengers.

Where does the Indian Pacific start and finish?

What towns does the Indian Pacific stop at?

The Indian Pacific train stops at Broken Hill, Adelaide, Cook and Rawlinna going Westbound and Kalgoorlie, Rawlinna, Cook, Adelaide, Broken Hill, and the Blue Mountains going Eastbound. Each town will have a new and different experience for you to enjoy.

Which is better, the Indian Pacific or the Ghan?

The Indian Pacific is a better train than the Ghan because it is a transcontinental trip that will take you from the Pacific Ocean on the Eastern coast, to the Indian Ocean on the Western Coast. However, if you would like to see the country from North to South, the Ghan is as equally grand and opulent.

What is the dress code on the Indian Pacific?

There is no dress code aboard the Indian Pacific. However, you may want to pack warm comfortable clothes as the air conditioning can get cool. Likewise, you need to pack a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for your outdoor excursions in which you will be participating.

<p>For now, the half-day itineraries see passengers board at either Queenstown or Strahan and track along to Dubbil Barril before returning to their departure station. The Q Train

All aboard, foodies: Victoria’s Q Train is quite the hot culinary ticket. Traveling along the 10 mile (16km) Bellarine Railway from the historic Drysdale station, this railway journey is all about drinking in the views as you savor wines and produce from the bucolic Bellarine Peninsula. Over a luxurious three-hour trip between Drysdale and Queenscliff, passengers feast on a six-course degustation menu while seated in refurbished rail dining cars.

Opt for the degustation in the main dining car, which seats up to 42 passengers on tables for groups of two, four or six. Or for a more exclusive (and expensive) experience go for the private dining for two in one of its first class dining cars. Train buffs will want to book on the first weekend of each month when the steam locomotive 3620 pulls the Q Train.

One of the world's most famous train journeys, t he Ghan is a truly epic ride. Linking Adelaide in the south with Darwin in the north (or vice versa), the Ghan crosses the length of Australia on a three-day journey, spanning 1,851 miles (2,979km). Striking through the red heart of Australia, passengers have the option to add an extra day to their journey to go underground at an opal mine at Coober Pedy, stop at fascinating outback center Alice Springs, or go on a boat tour through the Katherine Gorge.

Travelling on the Ghan gives passengers a real sense of the truly incredible scale of Australia and why its central regions are known as the Red Centre. Some scenery standouts are the rolling plains and weathered peaks of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia and the rust-red MacDonnell Ranges in the Northern Territory.

Indian Pacific

Traversing the entire width of Australia, the Indian Pacific journeys from Sydney on the east coast to Perth on the west coast (and vice versa) with a stop-off in Adelaide along the way. Spanning four days, three nights, three time zones and a distance of 2,704 miles (4,352km), the train passes through some diverse landscapes. The scenic Blue Mountains (pictured), outback country around Broken Hill, the vast, parched Nullarbor Plain and goldfields of Western Australia are among them.

Essentially a hotel on wheels, the coast-to-coast Indian Pacific train service spares no luxury. Passengers have private bedrooms with double beds, a restaurant which serves up modern Australian cuisine peppered with native ingredients and a lovely lounge to relax in during the day and admire the views.

Spirit of the Outback

Travelers aboard Spirit of the Outback embark on a 26-hour trip that follows the Queensland coastline from Brisbane to Rockhampton until it turns west into the outback to pass through a string of quaint rural towns before terminating in Longreach. Covering 823 miles (1,325km) in total, the train rattles through ever-changing scenery and increasingly rugged terrain.

<p>Passengers can choose between an economy seat or a first-class sleeper cabin, with the latter enjoying meals in the dining carriage, the Tuckerbox Restaurant. Economy passengers can purchase meals and refreshments for the trip in the galley. The train leaves Brisbane on Tuesdays and Saturdays and Longreach on Mondays and Thursdays.</p> <p><a href="http://www.loveexploring.com/gallerylist/90787/australias-eeriest-abandoned-towns-and-villages"><strong>Take a look at </strong></a><strong><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/gallerylist/90787/australias-eeriest-abandoned-towns-and-villages">Australia's eeriest abandoned towns and villages</a></strong></p>

<p>Scenic train journey options are fairly limited in Western Australia, but the narrow-gauge railway service between Perth and Bunbury in the south is a fun adventure. The <a href="https://transwa.wa.gov.au/plan-your-journey/train-lines/australind">Australind</a>, as it's known, covers 112 miles (181km) over the course of two-and-a-half hours and runs south from Perth, passing through a fragrant fruit-growing area that's also renowned for its abundance of wild flowers. It's a brilliant way to see some of Western Australia's landscapes on a day trip or you could linger on to explore more of the southwest part of the state. Historic Bunbury is right on the coast with some splendid beaches on offer – look out for wild bottlenose dolphins as you paddle in the Indian Ocean. There is a daily morning and afternoon Australind service from Perth to Bunbury and vice versa.

The Overland

Running for more than 130 years, The Overland has long been a popular mode of transport for passengers traveling between the cities of Adelaide and Melbourne. The inter-state journey takes a leisurely 11 hours to complete and the train passes through an enthralling range of landscapes, from rugged shrublands to lush green fields and by the lower reaches of mighty Murray River.

You could fly between the two cities but this is a far more scenic and relaxing option. With comfortable reclining seats, a range of dining choices, and generous luggage allowance, it's a brilliant way to see some remarkable scenery as you cross between the two states. Trains depart Adelaide on Sundays and Thursdays and Melbourne on Mondays and Fridays.

Kuranda Scenic Railway

The two-hour journey on the Kuranda Scenic Railway runs from Cairns to Kuranda up in the Atherton Tableland and takes visitors through one of the world's oldest rainforests. The tropical scenery takes in waterfalls, mountains and ravines as well as one of Queensland's most popular national parks, Barron Gorge. In the village of Kuranda, visitors can tour the historic train station, which is more than 100 years old, plus visit a butterfly sanctuary, the Koala Gardens and local markets.

WA government hails Yanchep train extension 'spectacular project' despite cost, time blow-outs

WA's premier and treasurer were among the first passengers to ride the 15-kilometre railway extension covering three new train stations in Perth's north — Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep — on Sunday.

The train was packed to the brim, with more than 500 passengers on board to the city's most northern suburbs for the first time.

The crowd clapped as the WA-assembled train departed the Alkimos station.

Young families, older patrons and train enthusiasts alike packed out each carriage, some filming the journey out the window to mark the occasion.

A crowd of people spill out of a train carriage.

At each of the new stops the hordes of people spilled out into the double-storey stations, kitted out with art installations.

Passengers travelled for free on Sunday, but the ride did not come cheaply for taxpayers.

The project's price tag has doubled since it was first announced in 2017, costing the government more than $1 billion and opening almost two years later than promised.

'Mission accomplished'

Metronet will add 23 new stations to Perth's railway network, with the state government estimating it will turn about 8,000 hectares of land into more desirable places to live.

Despite delays and price blow-outs, Premier Roger Cook declared the opening of the Yanchep extension a success in connecting the outer suburbs.

"Thanks to the hard work of 1,300 workers, we are finally happy to say, 'mission accomplished'," Mr Cook said.

WA Premier Roger Cook and Treasurer Rita Saffioti smile at a ribbon cutting event.

"As a dad from Kwinana, I understand just how important this sort of transport infrastructure is.

"It's transformed the way people live in my local area down south, and it will transform the way people live and move around the city for people living in the Yanchep and Alkimos areas."

Transport Minister and Treasurer Rita Saffioti said it was an exciting day for the northern suburbs.

"It's about connecting communities, it's about ensuring that families that are moving into the outer suburbs have excellent public transport from day one," Ms Saffioti said.

"This is a spectacular project that will serve generations to come.

"Alkimos and Eglinton has a lot of land adjacent to these stations to make sure that we can integrate new housing and commercial developments early into the station precinct."

A sign saying 'Yanchep'.

Ms Saffioti defended monetary blowouts, citing significant cost increases for importing reinforced steel, diesel and concrete during the project's timeline, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.

"As we know, costs have increased across the construction sector in WA and nationally, and also we've had a significant contribution from the federal government," Ms Saffioti said.

"There were a number of challenges along the way, but this has been delivered.

"The proudest day for me is when you meet people who will rely on public transport to connect to jobs, to connect to education opportunities."

Locals welcome line

Local residents have welcomed the extension in the hope it will bring more business to the coastal suburbs.

Jacinta and Daniel have lived in Yanchep for the past six years and said the train station was all part of the area's rapid growth.

"We've obviously seen a lot of change just in those years. I think that it's definitely become a lot more popular," Jacinta said.

A couple named Jacinta and Daniel stand with their three children near the coast.

"I think people are surprised that it's not as far north as it was previously thought."

Annie works at the local barber shop and said easier access to the northern suburbs had been a long time coming.

"I think for a long time Yanchep wasn't accessible, especially by public transport, so you either had to live out here or be able to get here on your own," she said.

"I think with that rail opening up it's going to give us a lot more exposure.

A hairdresser named Annie stand in front of a client with his head shaved.

"Yanchep was like a destination where you kind of go camping and you take a while so now that it's built up and we're getting a rail in I think it's going to do good things and bring good people out here as well."

Gap in plan

The independent climate researcher Climate Council released data this month which stated 60 per cent of people in Perth don't have access to decent public transport.

The report rated Perth the second-worst capital city in the country, leaving more than a million people without access to frequent, all-day public transport.

The group found the minimum level of service required to get people out of their cars was access every 15 minutes, between 7am and 7pm and within 800 metres of their homes.

An older man named Peter Newman pictured from the chest up on a suburban street.

The proximity of the new stations to homes was a gap in the state government's plan according to Professor of Sustainability at Curtin University, Peter Newman.

"It's a bit like going through country towns, there's not much else around them," he said.

Professor Newman said trains were the best way to bring a city together, but the newly built suburbs of Alkimos and Yanchep were too spread out to reap the benefits of the new railway.

"You've got to build around the stations to make that work," he said.

"You've got to have people living close by and we haven't done that enough in Metronet.

"There's some access, but they're scattered and not dense enough so you can't actually make it all work.

"It's too far away."

Stretched too thin

The state government said the Yanchep extension would stimulate new employment and give more than 150,000 future residents another option to travel around Perth.

Professor Newman said if the government wanted to make the outer suburbs appealing for residents to live, it needed to slow urban sprawl.

"We've certainly got to stop at Yanchep," he said.

"Our city is too long, 150km long, and that's one of the worst in the world."

WA Liberal leader Libby Mettam criticised the government for being hundreds of millions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule.

Ms Mettam said the entire Metronet project, originally budgeted at $3 billion, would now cost $13 billion.

Liberal leaders Libby Mettam and Steve Kelly stand together holding a piece of paper highlighting the cost blow outs of metronet

"Our concern with this project is the way it has been mismanaged and the budget blow-outs," Ms Mettam said.

"Each rail station is three times what this government has committed to ambulance ramping in the budget.

"We are saying that this project should have been better managed and we are saying this government has their priorities all wrong.

"We have a health system in crisis, we have people struggling to put a roof over their head as well as food on the table."
