13 Ghanaians successfully complete 10,000km drive from Accra to London

A group of intrepid explorers from Ghana, led by Kwabena Peprah, has undertaken a remarkable cross-continental road trip spanning over 10,000 kilometers.

Starting from Accra, the capital of Ghana, their expedition took them through numerous African countries and European destinations, culminating in a journey from one continent to another, according to reports.

The travellers, known as Wanderlust Ghana, are a diverse group of philanthropists and tourism enthusiasts. The team initially consisted of 13 members, including individuals such as Richard Anim, Kwadwo Saka, Kwame Peprah, Kofi Peprah, and others. One member dropped out due to work commitments in Senegal, and two others left the expedition in Morocco.

Their route began in Accra, weaving through various Ghanaian cities including Aburi, Nsawam, Kumasi, and Sunyani, before crossing into neighbouring Cote d'Ivoire. From there, they ventured through Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco, finally entering Europe through Spain via a Mediterranean ferry. Their journey showcased the diverse terrains and climates of Africa and Europe.

The expedition involved an array of vehicles, including a Mercedez Benz G-Wagon, a Toyota Landcruisers (V8), Lexus RX 350, and a Ford F150 Raptor. The team covered an average of 800 to 900 kilometers per day, consuming around 250 liters of fuel daily. Their progress was documented through videos shared on social media, revealing the challenges faced, including brake pad changes and interactions with local authorities.

A unique addition to the team was Nana Afua Serwaa, nicknamed "Shecanic," an auto repair technician aiming to master automobile mechanics across various landscapes and climates.

The journey not only showcased the team's adventurous spirit but also aimed to raise funds for rural primary schools in Ghana. The adventurers were inspired by stories of people travelling from Europe to African nations by road and decided to reverse the journey, with the goal of generating media attention and support for their philanthropic cause.

Upon reaching the outskirts of Monaco, Kwabena Peprah emphasized their motivation for the expedition, citing their passion for exploration and their desire to contribute to underserved communities through their philanthropic organization, EduSpots.

Despite encountering challenges, such as an extended delay due to an encounter with authorities in Mauritania, the team expressed admiration for certain countries along the route, particularly Senegal and Morocco, for their beauty, cleanliness, infrastructure, and friendly locals.

As their journey neared its end, the team anticipated a warm reception in London, where they planned to engage with the Ghanaian community and the Ghana High Commission to further their philanthropic endeavors.

With this epic journey serving as a testament to human determination and a drive to make a positive impact, Wanderlust Ghana's road trip from Accra to London stands as an inspiring example of adventure, philanthropy, and cross-cultural exchange.

Ghanaian group makes history driving from Accra to London on daring 10,000km trip

A group of adventurous Ghanaians who embarked on an epic 10,000km road trip late last month from Ghana’s capital Accra to London, UK, finally made it to their destination on Sunday. The group, known as Wanderlust Ghana, arrived around 12:00 pm GMT (1:00 pm BST) after an expedition that took the team through various African countries and destinations in Europe.

They started the road trip from Accra on Sunday, July 23, 2023, through Ghanaian cities such as Aburi, Nsawam, Kumasi, and Sunyani to Dormaa before entering Cote d’Ivoire through Golokrom, citinewsroom.com reported .

From Cote D’Ivoire, the group went through Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco, and finally entered Europe through Spain by a Mediterranean ferry. All in all, in Europe, they traveled through Spain, Monaco, France, Italy, Germany, and The Netherlands and arrived in London on Sunday, August 6.

“I’m in. We made history,” Kwadwo Saka wrote on Twitter, now known as X, on Sunday.

A team of 12 including Richard Anim, Kwadwo Saka, Kwame Peprah, Kofi Peprah, and a female auto repair technician called Nana Afua Serwaa started the journey but one person dropped off in Senegal due to work reasons and two others also left in Morocco.

Vehicles used for the journey included a Mercedez Benz G-Wagon, two Toyota Landcruisers (V8), Lexus RX 350 and a Ford F150, Raptor, all Ghanaian registered. Members of the team revealed that they used about 250 liters of fuel daily and covered an average of 800 to 900 kilometers per day. In spite of the various challenges including frequent brake pad changes and interactions with authorities in Mauritania, the group said their time in Senegal and Morocco was amazing due to the countries’ infrastructure, hospitality and beauty.

The idea to drive from Accra, Ghana, to London, United Kingdom, was planned in 2018 by Kwame Peprah, who asked some friends to come along, with many rubbishing the idea. Auto marketing companies were also not willing to sponsor the trip. But after getting some responses from a few friends, the team decided to start the journey in 2020. Then Covid-19 ruined their plans. Later, the group did some traveling within Ghana to gain some experience before embarking on the daring road trip to London.

“We are explorers and we are doing this for fun,” one member of the group told Ghanaian station Peace FM after making it to Spain. “We’ve read about people driving from Europe to Ghana all the time, and we also planned to do it and we are almost there.”

“We’ve been driving around our continent, we’ve been driving around our country and we decided to take it to the next level,” Kwabena Peprah told the BBC. “But most importantly we knew we will get some traction with the media and we’d use it to raise funds to help underserved communities in our country through EduSpots, which is a philanthropy organization, which creates educational hotspots for schools in deprived areas,” he added.

After their warm reception in London, the team said they were planning to engage with the Ghanaian community and the Ghana High Commission to pitch their philanthropy to them. They will also be having a party with the Ghanaian community next Saturday.

Ghanaian explorers wrap up 10,000 km road journey from Accra to London, they highlight unique routes they followed [Photos]

The journey of 13 ambitious Ghanaians— twelve men and one woman— started on July 23 and ended on Sunday, August 6 in London | credit: @wanderlustghana/ Twitter

In an extraordinary endeavour, 13 Ghanaians have embarked on a remarkable journey from Ghana to London.

Their journey commenced on Saturday, July 22nd, with the primary goal of raising awareness about digital poverty prevalent in rural areas of Ghana.

The group planned to reach London within 16 days, opting for a road trip instead of a seven-hour flight to the same destination from Ghana.

Day 1: Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire, starting from the border at Gonokrom near Dormaa Ahenkro Day 2: Bamako, Mali. Day 3: Dakar, Senegal. An additional day has been scheduled for car servicing and maintenance. Day 5: Nouakchott, Mauritania. Day 6: Dakhla, Morocco. Day 7: Guelmim, Morocco. Day 8: Casablanca, Morocco. Day 9: Tangier, Morocco. Day 10: The journey continues from Tangier to Algeciras, Spain, using a ferry. Overnight stay in Valencia. Day 11: Arriving in Monaco. Day 12: Reaching Lake Como. Day 13: Frankfurt. Day 14: Amsterdam. Day 16: Arrival in London via the Calais/Dover route.

This venture marks the first time Ghanaians are undertaking such an adventure.

The organisers said beyond the excitement, they also sought to gain first-hand experience of cross-border travel within the continent, aligning with the ideals of free trade.

Who are the Adventurers?

ghanaian road trip to london

Comprising a team of Ghanaian professionals, the group includes realtors, bankers, software developers, and business leaders.

Their purpose transcends mere travel; Kojo Akoto Boateng, one of the participants, revealed that while these journeys are enjoyable, they are also avenues for building relationships and devising solutions for rural Ghana.

Their trips serve as fundraisers to establish schools, libraries, e-learning resources, and provide mentorship for rural children.

Among the predominantly male group, there is a lone female mechanic, Nana Efua Serwaa Adusei.

Driving Towards Digitization

ghanaian road trip to london

Outside urban centres in Ghana, numerous communities and schools lack access to essential digital tools. Recognizing this, Kwabena Ayirebi, a leader among the adventurers, underscores the mission of the Wanderlust Ghana group to raise awareness about digital poverty in the country.

Their objective includes collecting funds to establish digital libraries that would link Ghanaian communities to the world of possibilities. The target of USD 100,000 aims to bring technology to the fingertips of young individuals, using these libraries as their gateway to a broader world.

As of August 4th, they have raised USD 6,000, designated as a digital catalyst fund to support digital charities.

Kwabena, a realtor, reflects on the journey’s conception since 2018, with the aspiration of completing it within sixteen days. The group documented every aspect of their voyage on social media, encompassing immigration and border procedures, as well as aspects like food and accommodation.

The Journey’s Genesis

ghanaian road trip to london

Despite planning for the trip in 2018, the endeavour faced delays due to the challenge of assembling participants.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 further hindered their plans. Three years after the pandemic’s emergence, they finally gave themselves the green light, determined to embark on this journey without external sponsorship.

The road trip for digitization comprised a convoy of five Ghanaian-registered cars, crossing through Mali, Senegal, and Mauritania. Kwabena Ayirebi shared on Facebook that they serviced some vehicles in Dakar, Senegal before progressing to Morocco.

By August 4th, another member of the group, Kojo Saka, confirmed that they had driven 7,200 kilometres to reach Spain.

While some members returned to Ghana, others left for South Africa and the Netherlands due to work commitments. Ultimately, by August 6th, nine individuals successfully reached London, completing the entire journey.

Want a Euro road trip this summer? Join us on this Ontario adventure

Discover a different place with a european name right here in southwestern ontario.

London, Ont. population sign

Social Sharing

Europe is far away and expensive. But you still want to go, right? How about a compromise (that you can still write home about).

Get in the car and travel to some of the finest southwestern Ontario cities, towns and villages named after their bigger European counterparts. There are quite a few, including Vienna, Copenhagen, Brussels and Paris.

This summer, join CBC London's Andrew Brown as he travels to uncover their charms. We're calling it the  Great Ontario Euro Road Trip . Up first is one that's obvious and definitely full of European edge, art and cuisine: London!

Special thanks to our tour guide, James Kingsley, editor at The Localist, for these highlights.

sculpture

If there's one thing the "other" London has, it's sculptures and monuments. London, Ont., has unique art pieces as well, said Kingsley, that you won't want to miss on this road trip stop.

White Oaks Mall isn't an obvious place for sculpture, but if you're heading in from the Wellington Street entrance, look to your right. The mall developer's son was an artist who was commissioned to put his work outside of those doors.

The Forks of the Thames area is also a hotbed of public art. There's a tribute to a group of martyrs who spent time in Australia where they were sent to a penal colony. There's the fountain, of course, and over at Museum London, the Rhino. You might also cross the road to the Superior Court of Justice to get comfy on what Kingsley calls "the concrete pillows," also known as Walter Redinger's Xabis.

court house pillow sculptures

Another sculpture-like hotspot is the labyrinth at Brescia University College. It's known a meditative place and some Londoners have spent their careers studying and appreciating what a walk through a labyrinth can do for wellbeing.

Strip malls

Kingsley is a big fan of a good strip mall, and London, Ont., has quite a few. "Who doesn't love them?" he asked. His top choice on this Euro road trip is on Wharncliffe Road, south of Horton Street.

James Kingsley

This strip mall, at 169 Wharncliffe, showcases a lot of what London offers, including great food, cultural diversity, independent businesses and craft beer.

"Where else are you going to find pizza? Thanks Piero's! You got Storm Stayed Brewery. You got a beauty studio, an old-fashioned neighbourhood convenience store. Plus you've got Mandi Guys with their amazing chicken on rice. There's also a new sweet shop, and the family running it has been sharing a recipe since 1913."

Kingsley points out that The Coves are right behind the strip mall, and are an excellent place for a hike.

London Transit Commission

Nothing says London like a double decker bus tour. Remove the top seats of the bus, changed the colour from red to blue and white, and this Ontario city is still prime for sightseeing!

Kingsley suggests doing a "four corners" of Londontour starting from downtown.

Head west on a London Transit bus going to Kains Woods. Get off at stop 2524. There you can wander through the neighbourhood for half a kilometre, before stepping into Kains Woods.

"It's about a six kilometre hike along the river. Beautiful bald eagles, herons, lots of great things to see," Kingsley said.

Head east next on route 3. Get off at stop 878. There you'll find East Park, a summer mainstay in London, and one that's recently updated many of the water park attractions.

Banana Kingdom

Head north, on the bus up Richmond Street. If you take it to the end, you'll be at Masonville Mall, so get off a little early at stop 1477. Walk over to Gibbons Park for a swim, and don't miss what Londoners call the Banana Kingdom .

Head south, on one of the many buses going down Wellington Road South. Get off at White Oaks Mall. Kingsley said this neighbourhood was voted number one when The Localist did a best of London neighbourhoods. He says once you leave the mall area, there's a lot going on.
