" Catspaw " Is The Seventh Episode Of The

second season of the American science fiction

television series Star Trek Written by Robert Bloch

and directed by Joseph Pevney , it was first broadcast

October 27, 1967. The crew of the Enterprise encounter

two aliens from another galaxy with magical-seeming

powers. This episode was the first filmed to include

series regular Pavel Chekov ( Walter Koenig ),

although it was broadcast after several other episodes

with the character had already been aired; the airing

was delayed to coincide with Halloween .

The USS Enterprise , under the command of Captain

Kirk , orbits the apparently lifeless planet Pyris VII.

Contact has been lost with the landing party, consisting

of Chief Engineer Scott , Lt. Sulu , and Crewman Jackson .

Jackson calls for Transport back to the ship, but falls from

the platform dead. His open mouth emits an eerie voice,

telling Captain Kirk that Enterprise is cursed and must

leave the planet immediately, or death will follow. Kirk

beams down with First Officer Spock and Chief Medical

Officer Dr. McCoy to search for the missing crewmen,

leaving Assistant Chief Engineer DeSalle in charge of

Enterprise . The landing party comes upon three

apparitions that appear as witches, who warn the landing

team not to proceed any further. The team ignores

the warnings and discovers what appears to be a

medieval castle.Entering the castle, the landing party

comes upon a black cat wearing a diamond pendant.

As they follow the cat, the floor collapses, and the fall

knocks them unconscious . When they awaken, they

find themselves held in a dungeon . Scott and Sulu

soon appear, walking as if in a trance, and unlock

their restraints

Summary [ ]

A landing party of Sulu , Scott , and Crewman Jackson on Pyris VII is overdue for a routine check-in, when Jackson finally answers the USS Enterprise 's urgent hails . His disconcerting message: one to beam up. And, when Jackson is beamed aboard by Kyle , he materializes on the transporter pad and he immediately falls down to the floor, dead . But from his dead lips a sonorous voice tells Captain Kirk that his ship is cursed; he must leave or all will die.

Act One [ ]

With two crewmen missing and a mysterious death, Kirk doesn't plan to leave just yet. He organizes a second landing party: himself, Spock , and Doctor McCoy . They beam to the point from which Jackson was beamed up. There, Kirk intends to discover what happened to his missing men, and what killed Jackson.

The planet is fogbound, something extremely unlikely given the environmental conditions, as there are no cloud formations or bodies of water on the planet. Proceeding towards a reading of nearby lifeforms , the landing party encounters three witches ; the spectral hags again warn Kirk to leave. Winds and fog try to thwart the landing party, but they eventually discover a large castle – the source of the lifeform readings. Entering the castle, they find a black cat and identify all the iconography of old Earth tales.

Pavel Chekov on the bridge, 2267

" I can do it, sir. I'm not that green! "

On the bridge of the Enterprise , Ensign Chekov reports to assistant chief engineer DeSalle that the landing party's lifeform readings are the only ones on the planet. As the landing party entered the castle, he then says they have simply stopped registering. DeSalle asks Chekov to check the scanning equipment for malfunctions but Chekov already has – the equipment is functioning perfectly. DeSalle then orders Chekov to recalibrate the scanners.

The landing party explores the castle further and falls through the floor, plunging them down to a dungeon chamber, and unconsciousness.

Act Two [ ]

Awakening, the landing party discovers they are chained. Scott and Sulu appear, and Kirk is at first relieved to see his missing men. Then he realizes they're marching to someone else's drum: alive, but unresponsive and no longer allies. The two enthralled men free Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, and herd them towards the door at phaser point; a brief scuffle is halted when all the men are suddenly – elsewhere, in the presence of a strange robed man.

This is Korob , decked out in wizard's finery, with robe, wand, and black cat . Spock's comment that mapping expeditions have not discovered lifeforms on Pyris VII wrings a small truth from Korob – that he is not native to this world. Korob first plies the crew with food and drink, then with fortunes in gemstones . All to get them to leave, without asking more questions. But Kirk tells Korob he could manufacture such stones by the ton on his ship; they're valueless, a fact that conflicts with whatever research Korob has done. Korob then reveals that the events were staged to test the landing party. He has learned they are loyal, brave, and incorruptible.

Sylvia enters. She tells Kirk that she can read and control the minds of men. Spock states that it must be Telepathy and Sylvia says "not entirely," and explains that telepathy is only a part of what she does. Kirk briefly overpowers Scott, seizing his phaser, and when he refuses to return it, Sylvia reveals another skill: she can perform sympathetic magic . She admits that she thought of Jackson in her mind, and when she killed the image and knew it was dead, so was the real Jackson. A small model of the Enterprise , held in the flame of a candle – and the real ship, orbiting above, begins to grow hot. Chekov reports to DeSalle that the temperature has jumped sixty degrees in just thirty seconds. " We're burning up, sir, " he states.

Act Three [ ]

Seizing Sylvia's arm, Kirk removes the model from the flame, and the Enterprise from danger. Kirk tries to surmise how they are able to do all of this and says " You seem to do with your mind, what we do with tools. You alter matter and move it about by telekinesis . " Korob begins to answer saying " Yes we can change… " when Sylvia cuts him off, stating that he talks too much. When Kirk suggests that landing parties will soon appear, Korob seals the model in a block – and above, the ship is suddenly surrounded by a force field unlike anything ever encountered, which doesn't come from anywhere.

On the Enterprise , Chekov cannot analyze the force field, but as it is nonetheless real DeSalle orders him to attempt to "put a dent in it".

Kirk and Spock are returned to the dungeon, while McCoy remains with Sylvia, who intends to question him. Kirk and Spock spend some time speculating about Sylvia and Korob, and Kirk decides they must be stopped. Their questions and interest seems to him a little too sinister. McCoy eventually returns, though he has been taken control of by Sylvia. He, Sulu, and Scott take Kirk to Sylvia.

Meanwhile, Sylvia and Korob argue. Sylvia likes her new sensations, and it's obvious that the interest goes further than their original plan. Wherever these aliens call home, they have nothing like them – and she intends to remain here. Korob reminds her they have a duty to the Old Ones , a fact she considers unimportant in light of her new infatuation.

Kirk is returned to Sylvia's presence, where he learns she is infatuated with him, as well. She reveals her plan: to dispose of Korob and join with Kirk. But Kirk is using her, gaining answers through manipulation. Among other things, he learns that the transmuter is the key to her power, a mechanism that facilitates the actualization of thought. But she discovers the deception, and has McCoy, Scott, and Sulu haul Kirk back to his cell.

On the Enterprise , Chekov reports that they had an effect on the force field, identifying a small electrical field as a start.

Korob finds Kirk and Spock; he reveals he has released the Enterprise , and he releases them. He also reveals that he can no longer control Sylvia or her pawns, and that he considers her dangerously irrational. He is regretful, offering his opinion that their visit could have been a peaceful one. Time presses, and he cannot explain in detail; instead, he urges the men out of their cell, where they again encounter the black cat – now grown to enormous size.

Act Four [ ]

Sylvia and Korob in Ornithoid form

Sylvia and Korob undone

The men are forced to retreat back into their cell, where they attempt to escape through the ceiling. The cat forces the door of the cell, however, crushing Korob. Kirk now has an opportunity to retrieve the wand.

Escaping through the ceiling, Kirk and Spock are confronted by their own enthralled crew, and a brief scuffle ends with Sylvia's pawns out of action, and the reappearance of the cat, as well as Sylvia. The wand Kirk has retrieved is the transmuter, and Sylvia wants it very badly. She transports Kirk away from Spock into the main hall and tells him to give her the transmuter. She informs him that she has a less powerful, and simpler mechanism; that it's Korob's wand which holds the key to their power. Sylvia is reluctant to simply seize the device from Kirk, despite her contention that he does not know how to use it.

Finally, she threatens Kirk with a phaser, demanding the wand. Kirk responds by shattering the wand, an act that undoes everything… almost everything. At the landing party's feet, two small aliens wither and fall. Deprived of their transmuter, Sylvia and Korob have resumed their real forms, and are as Sylvia described them: feathers in the wind, a life form that is totally alien to their universe. They quickly perish, and both landing parties return to the Enterprise .

Memorable quotes [ ]

Witches of Pyris VII

"Remember the curse!"

" Captain Kirk! Can you hear me? There is a curse on your ship. Leave this place, or you will all… die! "

" Captain Kirk! … Captain Kirk! … Captain Kirk! " " Go back! … Go back! … Go back! " " Remember the curse! " " Wind shall rise! " " And fog descend! " " So leave here, all, or meet your end! "

" Spock. Comment? " " Very bad poetry, Captain. " " A more useful comment, Mister Spock. "

" If we weren't missing two officers and a third one dead I'd say someone was playing an elaborate trick or treat on us. " " Trick or treat, captain? " " Yes, Mister Spock. You'd be a natural. "

" Mister Chekov, recalibrate your sensors. If you need help – " " I can do it, sir. I'm not that green. "

Kirk, McCoy and bones

Kirk, "Doc", and "Bones"

" Bones? Doc? "

" Where did your race get this ridiculous predilection for resistance, hmm? You examine any object. You… you question everything! Is it not enough to accept what is? "

" You can't think a man to death. "

" Maybe we can't break it, but I'll bet you credits to navy beans we can put a dent in it! "

" You are using me! You hold me in your arms and there is no fire in your mind! You're trying to deceive me! It's here like words on a page! You are using me! " " And why not?!! You've been using me and my crew!! " " You will be swept away. You! Your men! Your ship!! Your worlds!!! "

" Captain, a little more alacrity, if you please. "

" Everything's vanished. "

" All of this, just an illusion. " " No illusion. Jackson is dead. "

  • The title of this episode, "Catspaw", is a term that describes a person used by another as a dupe; as McCoy points out, Scott and Sulu are used as catspaws to lure more crewmen down.

Story and production [ ]

  • Robert Bloch based this episode very loosely on his own short story "Broomstick Ride." Bloch also wrote " What Are Little Girls Made Of? " In both episodes, the "Old Ones" figure into the guest characters' backstories. [2]
  • Although this was the first episode of TOS Season 2 in production (filmed in early May 1967 ), it did not premiere until the week of Halloween, 1967. It was, in fact, written in a Halloween-type theme for just that reason. This episode also remains to date the only Star Trek production produced as a "holiday special" type episode.
  • This episode marks several changes to the episode credits. From this point on, the episode titles and end credits are in the same font as the main title of the series. Directors and writers are credited at the beginning of Act One instead of the end of the last act. DeForest Kelley 's name is added to the opening credits. Also, Gene Roddenberry is credited as series creator in the opening credits.
  • Several bloopers from this episode can be found in the second season blooper reel. [3]
  • This episode introduces two plot elements that were revisited in stories later in season 2. First, the theme of extragalactic aliens taking Human form and then becoming inundated with Human sensations was revisited in " By Any Other Name ". Second, the subject of an eccentric man with uncommon powers and accompanied by an apparently intelligent black cat, who later turns into a black haired woman, is revisited in " Assignment: Earth ".
  • The three witches' appearance and manner of speech are reminiscent of (though not necessarily directly referential to) characters in Shakespeare 's Macbeth .

Koenig in a wig

  • Walter Koenig joined the cast as Pavel Chekov in this episode, despite his character having already met Khan Noonien Singh in the previous season's " Space Seed " as noted in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ; also note the rather large wig worn by Walter Koenig in this episode which was later dispensed with when his own hair was long enough.
  • This was the third and final appearance of Michael Barrier as DeSalle . The character has been promoted to assistant chief engineer because the producers thought they need someone in charge of main engineering while Scotty is in command of the bridge. However, as no such situation arose in any episodes, DeSalle has never made another appearance. ( These Are the Voyages: TOS Season Two , p. 46)
  • James Doohan 's only dialogue in this episode is the statement " Everything's vanished ". George Takei doesn't speak at all; he simply nods "yes" and "no" when his character is queried by Kirk, and later cries " aha! " before engaging Kirk in hand-to-hand combat . This is Takei's only non-speaking appearance in the entire series.
  • Theo Marcuse died in a car accident one month after this episode aired.
  • The role of Crewman Jackson was played by regular Trek stuntman Jay Jones . In a 1996 retrospective interview, Jay claimed that the role of Jackson was his first assignment on Star Trek . ( Science Fiction Television Series , Mark Phillips and Frank Garcia, McFarland and Co.)
  • This is the first episode to feature all seven of the "classic" cast members who were brought back for future big screen adventures: Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scott, Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov, although they do not all appear in the same scene together.

Props and effects [ ]

USS Enterprise metal model trapped in crystal

Metal prop laminated in Lucite

  • A detailed metal prop miniature of the Enterprise was created for this episode, then laminated in lucite as one of Korob's tricks. The miniature was donated to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum by Gene Roddenberry . ( The Star Trek Compendium , p. 70)
  • The Ornithoid life forms were marionettes composed of blue fluff, pipe cleaners, crab pincers, and other materials. The marionettes were operated with thick, black threads that were clearly visible; most of this was corrected in the remastered version of the episode. ( The Star Trek Compendium , p. 70)
  • The three witches seen towards the start of the episode were intended to be shown as floating severed heads, hence the reaction from the landing party at their appearance. The characters wore black turtlenecks against a black backdrop, with light shining directly up into the face. Unfortunately, the effect did not work and the turtlenecks worn by the actors can clearly be seen. Even in the remastered version of the episode, this oversight is still present. ( The Star Trek Compendium , p. 70)
  • This is the first episode in which a scope can be seen at the engineering station on the bridge. The science station scope was slightly altered for this episode; it is of a lighter color than the science scope used in episodes of the first season and has a circular control added to its left side. This dial control, as first seen in this episode, would remain throughout Seasons 2 and 3 .
  • The blue planet used in this episode as Pyris VII (albeit a darker blue to illustrate the spookiness of the planet) was reused in subsequent episodes, representing Argelius II in " Wolf in the Fold ", Sigma Iotia II in " A Piece of the Action ", Troyius in " Elaan of Troyius ", and Scalos in " Wink of an Eye ", which were all lighter blue color.
  • The wizard's robe worn by Korob is the same costume that was previously worn by Bob Denver in the Gilligan's Island episode "Lovey's Secret Admirer", which aired on January 23, 1967. [4]

Continuity [ ]

  • In this episode, DeSalle wears a red engineering tunic, unlike the gold command tunic he wore in " The Squire of Gothos " and " This Side of Paradise ". The character started out as a navigator in "Squire", then served as a science officer in "Paradise", ending up as an engineer here.
  • The short scene of crewmen in turtleneck uniforms walking in a corridor during red alert is stock footage from " Where No Man Has Gone Before ". This marks the last time that these uniforms are worn by Enterprise crewmembers.
  • The events of this episode take place on Stardate 3018.2 which means it took place right after the events of TOS : " The Menagerie, Part II ", whose events took place on Stardate 3013.1-3013.2, and before the episode TOS : " Shore Leave " whose events take place from Stardate 3025.3-3025.8.

Remastered information [ ]

"Catspaw" was the eighth episode of the remastered version of The Original Series to air, premiering in syndication on the weekend of 28 October 2006 . Aside from the standard remastering of the effects used for the USS Enterprise , the most notable revised features include new effects shots of Pyris VII , as well as the castle on the surface, with the original shot of the castle entry completely retained as part of the full building. The transmuter effect was also touched up and most of the visible wires controlling the Ornithoid life forms were removed.

Our 7 Favorite Cats From “Star Trek” & Beyond

Last Updated on May 27, 2024 by Catster Editorial Team

There have been more than 900 episodes of the 12 different iterations of Star Trek, including the animated series. There have also been 13 movies, over 800 books, and a novelization of the series. It has been one of the most popular franchises on small and big screens since it first aired in 1966.

Whether you’re a Trekkie or an ailurophile, enjoy this list of 7 cats that have featured and been named in various on-screen Star Trek iterations.

  • The 7 Cats From Star Trek

Spot is probably the most famous of the Star Trek cats. He was once Lieutenant Commander Data’s pet and Data even wrote a sonnet dedicated to him called “Ode to Spot”. The cat earned the respect of Commander Worf, and when Data passed in 2379, Worf became Spot’s new owner.

Spot was played by a total of six different cats, of both genders, but was meant to be a female cat in the show.

More recently, Grudge has become the poster cat of Star Trek, featuring in Star Trek Discovery as Booker’s companion. The cat is played by two Maine Coon brothers, Leeu and Durban, but the character of the cat is actually based on writer Jenny Lumet’s grandmother’s Pekingese dog, Nelly.

Grudge now has his own X/Twitter account and, in 2022, the Book of Grudge was published.

Cat owners in Star Trek tended to name their cats after prominent people. Neelix, Reginald Barclay’s pet cat in Voyager, was named after Neelix, a Talaxian crewmember of the USS Voyager. Barclay obtained Neelix sometime after he transferred from the USS Enterprise-E to the Pathfinder Project on Earth.

Neelix was a Persian cat, and often slept on Barclay’s stomach.

Sylvia was actually an ornithoid who could shapeshift at will, and could telepathically examine the minds of individuals near her, but one of the forms she took was that of a black cat. Sylvia took crewmembers of the USS Enterprise hostage in a bid to research and learn more about humans before discovering she enjoyed torturing and manipulating them.

Isis was another shapeshifter who liked to take the form of a black cat . Isis was a companion to Supervisor Gary Seven and had some kind of telepathic link to her companion. Though she was Seven’s pet cat, she was more than just this and communicated with him telepathically, plus understood his spoken words. Human Isis and the feline form of Isis both wore the same collar.

Isis was also involved in the 1968 sabotage and detonation of a nuclear missile in the atmosphere 104 miles above the surface of central Eurasia.

Chester originally belonged to Liam Bilby and lived on Farius Prime with his owner. Chester had a favorite chair and didn’t like it when someone else sat in it! But, when Bilby died, Chester passed to Senior Chief Petty Officer Miles O’Brien, who had entered Bilby’s home under the guise of Connelly.

O’Brien brought Chester to Deep Space 9 and the cat seemed to like him right away, leaping onto O’Brien’s lap.

  • 7. The Caitians

The Star Trek universe features many races that don’t get too much screen time, but occasionally pop up. The Caitians are a feline humanoid race that displayed a lot of feline characteristics, and are a spacefaring species and long-standing members of the United Federation of Planets.

They featured more prominently in the animated TV series, and the Caitians are a playable race in Star Trek Online, the MMORPG (multiplayer online role-playing game).

divider 3 paws

Cats have long been domesticated by humans , and it stands to reason they would feature in Star Trek. In the Star Trek Universe, they are treated as human pets and they feature quite regularly, although they only rarely appear in the movies and TV series. The Caitians did feature in the animated series and, more recently, take more of a starring role in the massive multiplayer game Star Trek Online.

Grudge’s role in Discovery has also put the cats of Star Trek on the map.

‘Starfleet Academy’ Casts Paul Giamatti: Everything We Know About New ‘Star Trek’ Series

Paul Giamatti and Holly Hunter

Star Trek fans may have said goodbye to two of the Paramount+ series in the franchise in the last two years ( Picard in 2023,  Discovery in 2024), but there are new additions still to come. One of them is  Starfleet Academy , first said to be in development in February 2022. Just over a year later, it was announced that Paramount+ had picked it up to series (in March 2023).

“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!” co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau said in a statement at the time.

“We are excited to introduce Star Trek  fans to a whole new generation of Starfleet officers in training as they navigate the rigors of the Academy and the brink of adulthood in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ,” added Domenic DiMeglio, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Data, Paramount Streaming. “Introducing new characters and compelling storylines, this all-new original series will serve as a fantastic addition to the franchise and Paramount+, bringing new generations of viewers and long-term Star Trek fans alike together to enjoy the next chapter in the iconic Star Trek universe.”

Now that casting has begun for the new series, we’re taking a look at everything we know below. Keep checking back for updates!

What Is  Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ?

The series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. Counselor Troi's 10 Best Star Trek: TNG Episode, Ranked

Doctor who's matt smith reflects on the life-changing experience of carrying on the doctor's legacy, every q star trek appearance ranked worst to best.

  • TNG could get a successful big-screen reboot like The Original Series thanks to modern Hollywood actors.
  • Recasting TNG crew is tough as original cast members were irreplaceable. But new actors could coexist.
  • TNG's best moments revisited with possible modern actors for revamped roles, bringing new energy.

Who would play the crew of the USS Enterprise-D if Star Trek: The Next Generation were rebooted as a new movie? With J.J. Abrams' blockbuster films, Star Trek: The Original Series has already gotten a successful big-screen reboot, and TNG could benefit from the same treatment. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-D, TNG had an amazing cast of characters who became just as popular as Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his Enterprise crew. Recasting the TNG crew would be no easy feat, as many of the actors came to embody the characters they played.

Throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation 's seven seasons, the crew of the USS Enterprise-D became a family and the cast members remain close friends today. While TNG 's original cast members are irreplaceable, they could coexist alongside a new cast for a big-screen reboot. With actors like Michelle Yeoh, Jason Isaacs, Holly Hunter, and, most recently, Paul Giamatti, modern Star Trek has been incredibly successful with its casting. Many big-name Hollywood actors love the Star Trek franchise and would jump at the chance to be a part of it. Here are 10 modern actors who could portray an updated cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

25 Best Star Trek: TNG Episodes Of All Time

Star Trek: The Next Generation produced some of the best and most beloved science fiction television of all time. Here is TNG's best of the best.

10 Julian Hilliard as Wesley Crusher

Originally portrayed by wil wheaton.

Although he is currently only 12 years old, Julian Hilliard has already appeared in numerous hit television shows and films. As young Luke in Mike Flanagan's The Haunting of Hill House , Hilliard perfectly captured the fear and wonder of a young, curious boy living in a creepy old mansion. Hilliard also portrayed Billy Maximoff, one of Wanda Maximoff's (Elizabeth Olsen) twins, in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Not only does Hilliard already have experience playing the son of Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda, but he seems more than capable of playing the young boy genius, Wesley Crusher. Wesley may not have been TNG's most popular character, but Wil Wheaton did the best he could with the role, and the character always had potential. Julian Hilliard could bring new energy to the role and round out the regular cast of TNG.

9 Marie Avgeropoulos as Counselor Deanna Troi

Originally portrayed by marina sirtis.

Best known for portraying Octavia Blake on the CW's post-apocalyptic drama The 100 , Marie Avgeropoulos would make a great Counselor Deanna Troi. Early in The 100, Octavia is one of the show's most empathetic characters, but she becomes a formidable warrior as the show progresses. Still, Avgeropoulos has the right look for Troi, and she showed her range as an actress on The 100.

In the first three seasons of The 100, Octavia is involved in a romantic relationship with Lincoln (Ricky Whittle), a warrior from a group of survivors called the Grounders. With their very different personalities, this relationship is reminiscent of the one between Deanna Troi and Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation's final season. Like Marina Sirtis, Marie Avgeropoulos also has Greek parents.

Marina Sirtis's empathic Counselor Deanna Troi had some great moments throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation's seven seasons.

8 Elizabeth Olsen as Dr. Beverly Crusher

Originally portrayed by gates mcfadden.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Elizabeth Olsen showed her incredible range as an actress, playing Wanda Maximoff (aka The Scarlet Witch) as a frightened orphan, a powerful Avenger, a devoted wife and mother, and a malevolent force fueled by her grief. In WandaVision, in particular, Olsen got to lean into her domestic tendencies before eventually unleashing the full might of her power.

Elizabeth Olsen has been nominated for two Golden Globe awards, for her performance as Wanda Maximoff in WandaVision and as housewife Candy Montgomery in HBO's Love & Death .

Like Dr. Beverly Crusher, Wanda would do anything for her children, but she's also a strong and capable woman outside of her role as a mother. On Star Trek: The Next Generation, Dr. Crusher was incredibly empathetic, but was also willing to stand up to Captain Picard when needed. Elizabeth Olsen has already proven more than capable of playing both sides of a role like Dr. Crusher.

7 John Boyega as Lt. Geordi La Forge

Originally portrayed by levar burton.

British actor John Boyega rose to fame after playing Stormtrooper-turned-rebel Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its two sequels. Like Geordi La Forge, Finn has a strong sense of empathy and morality, choosing to join the resistance rather than participate in the cruelty of the First Order. Boyega starred in the Netflix science fiction comedy They Cloned Tyrone as multiple characters, proving his versatility as an actor.

John Boyega also portrayed King Ghezo alongside Viola Davis's General Nanisca in the historical epic The Woman King . While Boyega's performance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was almost universally praised, the character of Finn was underutilized in the two sequels. Boyega has proven himself to be a talented actor who could undoubtedly play the brilliant and compassionate Geordi La Forge .

6 Laz Alonso as Lt. Worf

Originally portrayed by michael dorn.

As Marvin T. "MM (Mother's Milk)" Milk on Amazon Prime's The Boys , Laz Alonso has both the warrior mentality of Worf and his strong sense of morality. The Boys has a skewed morality compared to Star Trek, but MM is often the one holding Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) back from his darker impulses. MM is out for revenge against the defense contractor that owns the superhero team known as the Seven, which also draws comparisons to Worf.

Laz Alonso portrayed the villain in the fourth film in the Fast & Furious franchise, and he played Na'vi warrior Tsu'tey in James Cameron's Avatar. In The Boys and Avatar, Alonso plays both MM and Tsu'tey as strong and loyal warriors who also have a soft side . Life Worf, they fight for what they believe in and would protect their friends and families with their lives.

5 Matt Smith as Lt. Commander Data

Originally portrayed by brent spiner.

British actor Matt Smith has the perfect look and acting range to portray the USS Enterprise-D's resident android, Data (Brent Spiner). On the BBC's Doctor Who , Matt Smith brought a childlike wonder to the Eleventh Doctor, while also making it believable that he was a 900-year-old time lord. Both of these characteristics would serve him well playing Data, as the android is both ageless and childlike.

Matt Smith was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Prince Philip in Netflix's The Crown, and currently stars as Daemon Targaryen on HBO's House of the Dragon, a prequel to Game of Thrones. With all of these very different roles, Matt Smith has shown that he has just as much range as Brent Spiner, who portrayed both Data and his evil twin Lore (as well as several members of the Soong family).

Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith reflects on the life-changing experience he had carrying on the Doctor's legacy, getting to portray the character.

4 Richard Madden as Commander William Riker

Originally portrayed by jonathan frakes.

Scottish actor Richard Madden has played princes, spies, and superheroes, and elements of all of these characters could be incorporated into a portrayal of Commander William Riker . Riker was an accomplished Starfleet officer who became less uptight as Star Trek: The Next Generation progressed, and Madden has the charm to play Riker as a ladies' man and the leadership qualities to play him as First Officer of the Starship Enterprise.

As Robb Stark in HBO's Game of Thrones, Madden commanded armies before his untimely death at the infamous red wedding . Like many Star Trek actors, Madden has also performed in numerous Shakespeare plays. In 2016, he starred as Romeo in a West End production of Romeo and Juliet, alongside Lily James as Juliet, and directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Richard Madden won a Golden Globe award for his performance as war veteran and police officer Sergeant David Budd in the critically acclaimed miniseries, Bodyguard.

3 Toby Stephens as Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Originally portrayed by patrick stewart.

No one could ever replace Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, but British actor Toby Stephens could make the role his own. Stephens delivered an incredible performance as the ruthless pirate Captain James Flint in Starz's Black Sails , and he could bring the same commanding energy to the role of Picard. As both Captain Flint and John Robinson in Netflix's Lost in Space , Stephens has played a strong and capable leader who remains calm in a crisis.

Most recently, Toby Stephens appeared as the Greek god Poseidon in the Disney+ adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Like Patrick Stewart, Toby Stephens began his acting career on the stage and is a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Stephens has starred in numerous Shakespeare plays, including a portrayal of Hamlet for the 2004 Royal Shakespeare Company production. Not only has Stephens proven he can lead the cast of an ensemble show, but he can also perform the hell out of a speech, a quality necessary for Captain Picard.

2 David Tennant as Q

Originally portrayed by john de lancie.

Scottish actor David Tennant has the perfect chaotic energy to play the omniscient god-like being known as Q. As the Tenth Doctor on Doctor Who, Tennant perfectly captured the sometimes manic, but always intelligent and profoundly compassionate nature of the Doctor. David Tennant's version of Q could also incorporate elements of his Good Omens character, Crowley, who enjoys wreaking havoc on occasion, but genuinely cares for his friend Aziraphale (Michael Sheen).

John de Lancie's god-like Q became one of Star Trek's most popular recurring characters, and here are all of his appearances ranked worst to best.

The energy David Tennant brought to the manipulative villain Killgrave on Marvel's Jessica Jones could come in handy in playing the darker Q of early TNG. When Q later developed a fondness for Picard, he became more playful, which is where Tennant's Doctor energy would come in handy. Like many British actors, Tennant has also performed in numerous Shakespearean adaptations and even played Hamlet alongside Patrick Stewart's Claudius.

1 Lisa Berry as Guinan

Originally portrayed by whoopi goldberg.

Another important recurring character on Star Trek: The Next Generation was Whoopi Goldberg's Guinan , who served as the bartender in Ten Forward on the USS Enterprise. Like many real-world bartenders, Guinan was always willing to listen and offer advice to any of the crew members on board. As Billie the Reaper on the CW's Supernatural , Lisa Berry was believable as an ageless being who often knew more than she let on.

Later in Supernatural, Billie became Death incarnate, making her even more powerful and knowledgeable.

Berry certainly has the right energy to play Guinan as someone who will tell you what you need to hear rather than what you want to hear. Berry had quite a screen presence on Supernatural and she could bring that same compelling energy to playing the enigmatic El Aurian bartender. Whether or not the characters of Star Trek: The Next Generation ever get recast, there are many talented actors who would be perfect for a role in a potential reboot.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.
