The 8 best safaris to take in the UK

The 8 best safaris to take in the UK

In the past year many businesses have had to pivot, with bars morphing into off licences and restaurants evolving into épiceries and delis. Travel companies have also had to refocus, which has given rise to a new phenomenon: the domestic safari . With international travel still uncertain, and the thirst for UK adventure at an all-time high, companies that once focused on tracking wildlife or nature in far-flung destinations are now offering exhilarating flora- and fauna-packed trips on our own isles. From spotting guillemots on the Caledonian coast to snorkelling with seals in Northumberland, these homegrown expeditions are about celebrating our own terrain in all its glory.

Surfaris in Northumberland with Crabtree and Crabtree

The Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast play host to one of the largest seal colonies in the UK. A windswept surfari, organised by off-the-beaten-track holiday-home company Crabtree and Crabtree, offers the chance to snorkel with the bonny-eyed marine mammals. Paddleboard along the Northumberland shoreline to the islands and spot other wildlife along the way, including puffins and whales. ‘Our properties are located in some of Britain ’s most rugged regions, which chimes with the current zeitgeist, and the north of England has some of the richest wildlife in the country,’ says Emma Crabtree, founder of Crabtree and Crabtree. Spot dolphins from a yacht in Scotland with Tripsmiths

To fuel surging demand for homespun adventure, Tripsmiths has just swapped a whale- and bird-watching expedition on the Norwegian fjords for a cruise through the Highlands and islands of Scotland on private yacht Lord of the Glens. Sailing down through the Caledonian Canal around the Western Isles, expect to see Atlantic seals, minke whales, dolphins, porpoises and a variety of seabirds on Eigg or drink in sightings of basking sharks – and whisky – on the wilds of Oban before tucking into freshly caught seafood. ‘It is a very British trait to assume that a safari has to be in sub-Saharan Africa or perhaps the wilds of Norway . We have had no issue in persuading our guests to swap this for an amazing voyage along the lochs, Highlands and islands of western Scotland ,’ says founder Charles Starmer-Smith. 'We are seeing an extraordinary increase in people’s desire to discover the natural world closer to home. A desire for travel to be meaningful and a greater awareness of the importance of sustainability have all contributed to a rise in bookings for trips to discover the British Isles.’ From £1,999 per person, ts.tripsmiths.com

Go on a wild ride with Steppes Travel

Best known for its epic overseas adventures, Steppes Travel has changed its itineraries this year to include destinations closer to home, and to ‘lift the lid on the UK’s eccentricities’. Follow the river Dart from source to sea in Devon , biking along disused railways, before bedding down in the idyllic grounds of Buckfast Abbey (from £2,295); or embark on an intrepid four-wheel self-drive along Scotland’s rugged North Coast 500 route past Cape Wrath and Applecross, staying in remote lodges (from £2,495). ‘From Cairo to the Cotswolds may seem like a quantum leap – we know our clients will want to continue having adventures overseas, but for now they are keen to look closer to home. And just because we are putting together a holiday in our backyard doesn’t mean our commitment to positive-impact travel is any less rigorous,’ says product and sales director Jarrod Kyte. steppestravel.com

Learn to paint fallow deer with Wildlife Worldwide

Offering an intimate perspective on nature with artist Trevor Waugh, Wildlife Worldwide is offering new trips based around pencil and paintbrush. From a two-night trip examining the fallow deer’s graceful form in the New Forest (from £595 per person) to five days on Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel studying razorbills and manx shearwaters (from £850), its Sketchbook Safaris are suited to the novice paintsmith or more advanced artist. ‘We’ve seen a massive increase in demand for UK-based trips and have introduced an extensive range of new trips to cater for this. The small group size and relaxed nature of the workshops are suitable for anyone with an interest in art and wildlife, the perfect tonic to a few months spent in lockdown,’ says manager Dan Free. wildlifeworldwide.com

Observe migrating birds with Naturetrek

Having changed tack, Naturetrek now offers thoughtfully planned excursions to destinations including North Norfolk , the Somerset Levels and the Yorkshire coast aimed at budding ornithologists and lepidopterists. For an avian jaunt, track migrating wrynecks or common redstarts on the remote Channel island of Sark (from £2,195), or seek out white-letter hairstreak and silver-studded blue butterflies on a four-day trip around Dorset (from £495). ‘We've had our wings clipped over the past year, but our clients have been yearning for new experiences, fresh air and companionship, and luckily in the UK we have some of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles, which probably haven't been fully appreciated in the past,’ explains general manager and tour leader Andy Tucker. naturetrek.co.uk

Welsh safari trails with Celtic Routes

Previously known as Peru Safari, Celtic Routes is a fresh offering from Paul Boardman after the pandemic put an end to his business running tours across South America . He and his wife Marisol are now leading trips through Snowdonia, the Cambrian Mountains, Brecon Beacons and other Welsh destinations, by Land Rover, on horseback and on foot. There may be no Inca Trail – or altitude sickness – but you will get the opportunity to spot ospreys and golden eagles almost on your own doorstep. celticroutes.info

Explore marine life via kayak with The Machrie Hotel

Bedding down in one of Islay’s top hotels is a good way to prepare for a go-getting day exploring the peat-rich isle by sea kayak. The Machrie Hotel is offering trips with Kayak Wild Islay, introducing guests to herons, Arctic terns and the odd otter. The kayaks offer a close-up view of the wildlife, and if weather permits, a paddle into hidden lagoons and bays, glimpsing minke whales and orcas on the way. Inland, continue the adventure at the Loch Gruinart Nature Reserve, home to sea eagles and peregrine falcons. ‘One of the positive results of lockdown has been a new appreciation for the beauty of the UK and the extraordinary sights that can be discovered right on our doorstep,’ says Iain Hamilton, general manager at The Machrie. ‘As kayaks are non-motorised, visitors do not disturb the marine life and also have the best chance of spotting Islay’s puffins – comical in appearance, they are always a favourite among our guests.’ From £55 per person, machrie.com

See guillemots in Scotland with Pelorus

Renowned for its high-end bespoke voyages across the world, often by private boat, the company has recently included a number of wildlife-focused trips around our nature-brimming isles. The hands-on Scotland by Yacht trip takes in St Kilda, which has the largest colony of seabirds including guillemots in the north-east Atlantic. Help set camera traps in osprey-nesting areas, carry out population counts for fulmars, kittiwakes and razorbills, or muck in with relocating beavers. The eagle-eyed may even spot killer whales as they hunt for seals in the murky depths. pelorusx.com

Safari holidays

Incredible safari holidays with kuoni.

No matter how many wildlife documentaries you’ve seen, nothing can prepare you for the real thing. Let us take you on an African safari holiday .

The term ‘safari’ comes from a Swahili word meaning ‘journey’. Take Jeep rides deep into the wilderness or fly into tiny national park airstrips where lions roam the runway. Soar over herds of zebra at sunrise in a hot-air balloon, sleep out in a luxury treehouse under a blanket of stars, or book your seat for the greatest wildlife show on Earth where over a million wildebeest migrate across the scorched plains.

We’ve spent more than 40 years finding the best African safari experiences and places to stay. We can put you in touch with incredible local guides and tell you about the safari camps where elephants walk right through the lobby. Our safari experts love sharing their tips and advice to make sure you have the best safari holiday possible – in fact, we were voted Best Medium Safari, Nature & Wildlife Holiday Company at the British Travel Awards 2019.

We know that some guests enjoy a more sociable experience with like-minded travellers, while others love the thrill of an independent adventure, so with us you can choose an escorted small group safari or an independent tailor-made safari where you’ll have your own private driver/guide.

Whether it’s your first trip to Africa or you just can’t stop going back, talk to us and we can help create the perfect tailor-made safari for you.

African Safari Specialists: 16 Experts We Trust

Zebra Grazing at Savannah at Masai Mara

Even the most hardcore travelers we know—the sort of people who plan their own hikes through Patagonia , ride motor scooters up and down Vietnam, and bareboat charter in the BVIs—get a little skittish when it comes to that most bucket-y of bucket trips, the ultimate African safari . And who can blame them? It’s tough to find legit info, the geography’s confusing, there’s a bunch of indecipherable lingo, and the price tag— oh, the price tag . When you’re spending more than $1,000 a day for what’s supposed to be the trip of a lifetime, even the most intrepid travelers are gonna get skittish.

Which is why we always advise travelers to book their next African adventure with the help of a travel specialist , somebody who’s actually stayed in the tented camps, walked through the bush with the guides, and been on those puddle-jumpers you’re planning to take. These experts know what’s up, because they’ve already been where you wanna go—and the other places you hadn’t even considered that may even be a little bit better. So whether you want to see the big five, track the Great Migration, paddle through the Okavango, or cruise the Skeleton Coast, these are the go-to experts that can help you pull it off.

Dan Achber, Trufflepig Achber knows Botswana particularly well—he’s organized multiday paddles on the Selinda Spillway and game counts with zebra researchers working in the Makgadikgadi Pans.

Cherri Briggs, Explore, Inc. Briggs has spent more than two decades planning trips to Africa , and her latest focus is lesser-known but awe-inspiring places like Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Zambia.

Deborah Calmeyer, Roar Africa With her far-reaching network that includes some of the region’s savviest guides, she can get you into private homes, gardens, and art collections you can’t otherwise see.

Linda Friedman, Custom Safaris She’s planned lots of multigenerational family safaris, and she’s also expert at gorilla tracking in Rwanda .

Africa safari tours

Intrepid travellers in safe viewing jeeps watch wildebeest cross the road in Ngorongoro Crater

Take a walk on the wild side on an African safari.

The word “safari” means “journey” in Swahili. And a safari in  Africa  is all about the journey. While seeing a leopard munch on a freshly caught gazelle or spying a curious lion cub venture away from its mother’s protective embrace will be highlights of your trip, you’ll discover the journey is as much a part of your trip as the destination.

The road-trip games you play with your new travel mates, the feeling of the wind (and maybe a little dust) in your hair when you’re travelling down long, winding roads, and the young Maasai boy who waved at you as you passed him along the road will stay with you long after you return.

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Go on safari through Kruger National Park, one of the largest game reserves in  Southern Africa . This massive park is one of the premier safari spots in all of Africa and for good reason; it’s home to over 500 bird species, 100 species of reptile and 150 mammal species, including the Big Five and the endangered African wild dog.

Venture deep into the steamy jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in search of the rare mountain gorilla. With a local guide to lead you, you’ll trek into the forest to spend one unforgettable hour watching and hanging out with a family of gorillas. A close encounter with these gentle giants is an extraordinary African experience that will always stay with you.

The only thing more magical than witnessing the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti? Seeing it from the sky in a hot air balloon. As the herds of wildebeest and thousands of other animals travel from Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve, you can watch their journey and enjoy incredible views from a unique perspective.

The Okavango Delta has a unique system of waterways that are home to an immense array of wildlife. The best way to explore it is in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. Visit in May to September, when animals are confined to small islands created by the annual flood, making it easy to spot great herds of elephant and antelope, hippos, crocodiles, lions, cheetahs and more.

Kenya Wildlife Safari

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

For more info on our overland trucks, see our  Africa overland page .

When is the best time to go on safari?

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Where is the best place to go on safari?

The best place to go on safari depends on what kind of animals you’d like to see and what other activities you’d like to do in destination. We offer safaris to some of the best safari destinations in eastern and southern Africa, like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and more.

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colors is the best attire for a safari (dark colors will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our  ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our  accessible travel page  for more information.

What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

This world and the animals that call it home are precious, and we believe it’s our responsibility to help preserve them. We do not include or condone any activities that exploit animals on our safari trips, including hunting, feeding or interacting with animals in any way. We believe that wild animals should be observed in the wild, from a respectful distance.

Some tips for being a wildlife-friendly traveller include never buying animal products, not participating in activities that include contact with the animals, and not including location tags on social media posts (some poachers have gone high-tech and use social media to track rare animals’ locations).

The best safari parks in the uk.

Meerkat in Longleat safari park, UK

Though nothing can beat seeing animals in their natural habitat, safari parks can be a great substitute when time, money and other circumstances get in the way of your dream trip. Visiting a safari park in the UK can also be a good introduction to safaris for children and other first-timers, as well as a more ethical choice of day out for animal lovers than the zoo.

In this post, we explore the UK’s best safari parks to help you support conservation from the comfort of home.

The UK’s Best Safari Parks

Longleat safari park.

Set in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, Longleat Safari Park is a really family-friendly day out. In the main park, you can walk past enclosures housing everything from creepy crawlies to wild cats and primates.

At certain times of the day, you can join a jungle cruise out onto the estate’s huge lake where, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a pair of hippos in the shallows and the silverback lowland gorilla and his family on the island in the centre. Keep your eyes peeled! As part of the trip, you’ll also have the chance to feed the resident sea lions who splash and swim alongside the boat in hopes of gobbling down some fish.

Of course, the highlight of any trip to Longleat is the self-drive safari. Yes, Wiltshire’s plains are home to 3 of the big 5: lions, rhino and Anne the elephant, as well as cheetah, wolves, tigers and deer. As long as you drive safely and keep your windows closed, the animals are well accustomed to vehicles and can treat you to some incredible encounters.

Other experiences available at Longleat include giraffe feeding, a lemur walk-through and monkey mayhem, where the rhesus macaques are free to clamber all over your vehicle and remove whatever takes their fancy! You might decide to take the safari bus for this exact reason…

Longleat giraffe

Longleat is committed to conservation right across the world. From breeding programmes to help restore populations of wild dogs and black rhinos in Tanzania to funding the conservation work of the Red Panda Network in Nepal, Longleat relies on donations and purchases from its visitors to support this critical work. By visiting, you’ll be doing a world of good!

Port Lympne

My personal favourite safari park in the UK is Port Lympne in Kent. This game reserve is the closest you’ll get to Africa in the UK, thanks to its safari drives and various lodge-style accommodation to stay overnight in for the ultimate experience.

There are enclosures in the main park, housing beautiful animals like lynxes, gorillas and brown bears, as well as lions, tigers and cheetahs in larger pens. You can visit each of these areas on foot, and I recommend timing your visits alongside the programme of ranger talks. These give you the opportunity to hear more about the incredible animals and ask any questions you can think of!

Like Longleat, there are wide open plains that are home to giraffes, zebra and antelope, but the only way to see them is by joining one of the tours, where an experienced guide takes you and a group of others out into the wild on a safari canter. You’ll be lucky enough to see these animals roaming free (or as free as is possible in the Kent countryside), as well as rhinos, elephants, wild dogs and other rare species behind fences.

Port Lympne safari park silver back gorilla

What makes this place really special is the Aspinall Foundation’s link to conservation efforts in Africa and beyond. Port Lympne has a hugely successful breeding programme that has returned various animals to the wild, including five eastern black rhinos, two cheetahs and over 60 gorillas.

At each enclosure, you’ll be able to read whether the animals inside are candidates for reintroduction, and there are dedicated teams at the park who will be more than willing to tell you more when you visit.

Woburn Safari Park

Over 80 rare and endangered species call Bedfordshire home, and you’ll be able to see them all at Woburn Safari Park.

Much like other UK safari parks, your visit may begin with a drive-through safari that will take you on a journey across the globe. From the comfort of your own car, you will drive across plains and through grassland to see rare horses, bison, wildebeest, camels, southern white rhino, buffalo, giraffe, monkeys and zebra.

Of course, my favourite area at Woburn Safari Park is the Kingdom of the Carnivores. Here, you could see Amur tigers, timberwolves, black bears and lions, each species separated into their own enclosures large enough that you’d still need to be lucky to spot them.

Taking a photo of a rhino at Woburn safari park in car

Once you have completed your 60-minute loop of the self-drive, your visit will be far from over, as your foot safari treats you to sightings of the smaller animals. Think parrots, meerkats, wallabies, otters, lemurs, sea lions, penguins, squirrel monkeys, red pandas and far too many more to mention.

By purchasing a ticket to Woburn Safari Park, you’ll be helping the team to sustain the population of animals kept onsite, as well as funding the critical conservation work they help to fund around the world. Various projects they support include the International Elephant Foundation, the Wildcats Conservation Alliance and Helping Rhinos. All very worthy causes, I’m sure you’ll agree!

Knowsley Safari Park

Knowsley Safari Park near Prescot in Merseyside boasts the UK’s longest safari drive over 550 acres.

Here you’ll have close encounters with African lions, white rhinos and bison from the comfort of your own car. Though if you’re nervous about damage to your vehicle in the baboon enclosure, book a spot on the baboon bus, which is kitted out with climbing ropes and ladders for the baboons to roam free on. You can’t get much closer than that!

African lion at Knowsley Safari Park

There’s even more to see on the foot safari, including Amur tigers, giraffes, meerkats, bush dogs, birds of prey, sea lions and tapir too. What a treat! There are animal talks and shows scheduled throughout the day, so make sure you plan in advance to see everything you want to.

Knowsley has a dedicated conservation team tasked with educating visitors and the wider public about their critical projects. They also work on the ground with endangered species, including monitoring, anti-poaching activities and fixing fences to reduce human conflict in their natural habitats.

West Midland Safari & Leisure Park

This safari park in the heart of the Midlands makes a great day out or a holiday in and of itself. A stay in any of the luxury safari lodges promises an incredible encounter with animals including tigers, rhinos and elephants; but with a drive-through safari and village walk also on offer, you’ll have just as good a time without the expensive short break.

The safari drive can be done in your own car or as part of a guided minibus tour, where you’ll see African lions, giraffes, zebra, wild dogs, cheetahs and antelope. There’s also a Wild Asia area housing Indian rhino, swamp deer and blackbucks too.

Lemurs at West Midland Safari Park

There is arguably more to see here once you’re out of your car, including lemurs, ostriches, red pandas, hippos, meerkats, penguins, sea lions and… dinosaurs. Yes, really! Animatronic replicas of T-rexes, velociraptors and more growl and roar through the bushes in the Land of the Living Dinosaurs. There really is plenty to see and do here!

You’ll notice ‘Leisure Park’ has been appended to the name, meaning there’s more here than the animals. Virtual reality experiences, rollercoasters, log flumes and more can be found in the Adventure Theme Park, where rides are available for an additional fee.

As perhaps the most theme park-like safari park in the UK, you’d be forgiven for believing this makes conservation less of a priority for West Midland. But that’s far from the truth. From research projects to breeding programmes, your entrance fee and other purchases will be supporting endangered species and biodiversity across the world.

Blair Drummond Safari & Adventure Park

Located just outside Stirling, Blair Drummond is easily one of the best safari parks in the UK, let alone in Scotland!

As well as the famous safari animals like lions and rhinos in the drive-through area, Blair Drummond is also home to a huge variety of rare and fascinating species. Over 300 animals including Highland cattle, red ruffed lemur and llamas can be found on foot, making for a packed and wild day out.

Highland cow at Blair Drummond Safari Park

Conservation is an important aspect of Blair Drummond’s work. Since 2014, the park has given over £192k worth of funding to conservation projects, with that money contributing to the salaries of anti-poaching teams, their equipment and fighting deforestation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can you go on a safari in africa.

Some of the most popular national parks for safaris include Kruger in South Africa , Masai Mara in Kenya , and the Serengeti in Tanzania . However, there are so many other incredible parks to visit in Africa. We can help you decide the right parks for you depending on what you’re looking for. For example, Madikwe and the Eastern Cape in South Africa are great for families. The Sabi Sands Conservancy in Greater Kruger National Park is ideal for those seeking ultra-luxury. Kenya and Tanzania offer an abundance of wildlife roaming across the African plains. Zimbabwe , Zambia and Botswana are also remarkable safari destinations, with Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River as additional highlights. Rwanda , Uganda , and Namibia will all provide different safari experiences, perfect for return travellers to Africa.

Is Kenya or South Africa better for safaris?

Both destinations offer different experiences, wildlife, and types of safaris. South Africa is recommended for families due to its malaria-free game reserves and exceptional food. You can also combine your safari with a visit to a beach, city and wineries. You’re likely to see more wildlife in Kenya. In Kenya, you’ll probably visit more than one national park and see a greater variety of landscapes and animals. Plus, you can combine your safari with a beach stay in Mombasa, Lamu, or Watamu.

Which African country has the best safaris?

This is an impossible question to answer! Each and every safari is completely unique. What you see also depends on your own personal experience and luck. We can guarantee that once you’ve been on a safari, it will remain one of your best holidays. Call our destination experts to discuss which country best suits your holiday dreams.

How many days do you need for a safari?

Anything from 2 nights to 14 nights or longer. We suggest a minimum of 2 nights, as this means you have one full day at the lodge. This allows you at least two safaris (morning and afternoon), the chance to have a spa treatment, relax by the pool, go on a walking safari, and admire the natural surroundings of the African bush. If you’re a wildlife aficionado or an eager photographer, the longer, the better.

Where can I see the Big Five on safari?

For a chance to track the Big Five on a safari, head to South Africa , Kenya , Tanzania , Botswana or Namibia . You can see all five animals — the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros — in each of these destinations, although they may be spread across several parks.

Can I take my family on safari?

A family safari is an unforgettable adventure, and we highly recommend it. That said, certain game lodges have age restrictions for children, and some safaris set a minimum age for safety reasons. Talk to our Destination Specialists to find the best family safari for you.

Are African safaris dangerous?

There is an element of danger in any safari as you are in wild terrain surrounded by wildlife. However, the lodges we select and the partners we work with ensure safety is at the forefront of their day-to-day duties, so you should not be concerned.

How do I book a safari holiday with Hayes & Jarvis?

You can book your safari holidays for 2023-2024 with Hayes & Jarvis by:

  • Calling us at 020 8106 2403
  • Scheduling a callback
  • Or by writing to us

How much does an African safari holiday cost?

Our expert-curated African safari holidays start at £2,499 per person.

Which is the best month to go on an Africa safari holiday?

The dry months from June to October and January to March are normally the best and most recommended months to go on African safari holidays. However, there might be variations depending on the wildlife parks you pick and the experiences you are looking to have. It is best to speak to our Africa experts for more destination-specific information.

How many days are enough for a safari holiday?

You will need at least two nights to experience the main highlights of your safari holidays. This is so that you can head out on at least two safari drives and have a good chance of spotting Africa’s Big Five and other wildlife. This also gives you enough time to sign up for guided nature walks, spa sessions, and other activities.

What equipment or clothing should I pack for a safari holiday?

While on a safari drive, long-sleeved shirts, T-shirts, and full-length cargo pants in muted or camouflage colours work best. Early mornings and evenings can get quite chilly during winter, so wear a warm jacket. Sun hats, sunglasses, and sunblock are essential for your time in the sun. Depending on your interests, we also recommend carrying binoculars and photography gear.

Which destination in Africa offers the best safari experience?

No two African destinations are alike, and each offers something special and unique:

  • South Africa

Is Masai Mara better than the Serengeti?

The Masai Mara and the Serengeti are both extraordinary African safari holiday destinations. Kenya is a more well-established safari destination with a wider choice of hotels and easier access to game parks. As a result, it is the more popular pick. The Masai Mara is a smaller area with higher wildlife density, so it’s easier to spot animals.

The Serengeti is much larger than the Mara, and the wildlife is spread out over a larger geographical region. While you can witness the Great Migration at both destinations, you can experience it across a much longer window in the Serengeti.

On a luxury safari holiday, wake up to the sights and sounds of the wilderness. The trumpeting of an elephant, leopards on trees, hippos cooling off in muddy ponds, or a dazzle of zebras grazing in the vast savannah. Our African safari holidays are full of awe-inspiring landscapes, unforgettable animal sightings, and opportunities to soak in the raw beauty of the wild.

What can you expect on our luxury safari holidays?

Our luxury safari holidays are curated by travel experts with insider knowledge of the best destinations, the ideal time to visit, and how to get the best experiences. Get front-row seats to the “Great Migration” in the Serengeti, book sunrise and sunset safaris, and witness the sun cast its golden glow on some of the most spectacular natural settings. Beyond the Jeep safaris, sign up for a bushwalk, fly over the savannah in a hot air balloon, or spot animals as you glide down a river on a traditional canoe.

Choose from personalised safari holiday packages in Kenya , Tanzania , Botswana , and South Africa , each with varied geography and adventures. Whether this is your first safari holiday or you are returning to explore more of the region, our tailor-made itineraries will ensure an unforgettable holiday filled with amazing animal sightings.

Combine a safari holiday with a visit to a modern city. For instance, spend time in fabulous Cape Town and take excursions into the wild on our South African safari holidays . The country is also known for some of the best family safari holidays . Watch your little one go wide-eyed with excitement when you have close, personal interactions with animals.

Balance your exhilarating safari holiday in Tanzania or Kenya with a relaxing beach trip to gorgeous Zanzibar . Stay at some of the best safari lodges and boutique accommodations that harmoniously blend in with the surroundings.

Volcanoes Safaris Was the First to Bring International Travelers to Rwanda’s Gorillas — Here’s Why It’s Still the Best

Nearly 25 years since its founding, Praveen Moman's Volcanoes Safaris is as focused on community and sustainability as ever.

best safari company uk

Brad Japhe/Travel + Leisure

When viewed in pictures, the silverback gorilla is a foreboding beast: a hairy, barrel-chested warrior weighing as much as 600 pounds with an arm span that can stretch more than eight feet. But, when observed in their native habitat of Sub-Saharan Africa, there is nothing menacing about Earth’s largest living primate. Juveniles are as playful and innocently curious as their human counterparts, while adults are wholly enveloped in a zen aura. It is a spellbinding spectacle.

So, it’s no wonder that approximately 50,000 visitors a year make the trek to experience it for themselves — and despite the steep cost of entry (a permit is $1,500 per day in Rwanda and $800 per day in Uganda), that number is rising. They’re arriving not just for the silverback but for all the great apes of the region, which includes chimpanzees and critically endangered golden monkeys.

Still, despite the interest in the region and its incredible ecosystem, with increased tourism comes the continual risk of over- tourism. Sadly, the communities and ecosystems directly threatened by such are largely denied the added revenue it generates.

Brad Japhe/Travel + Leisure

One man, however, is working hard to ensure a more equitable — and sustainable — outcome. Praveen Moman, a native Ugandan and a successful hotelier and passionate activist, leads Volcanoes Safaris , founded in 2000 as the first international safari company to take clients to Rwanda. Five years later, it became the only safari company to sign the United Nations Kinshasa Declaration on Saving the Great Apes. By 2009, Moman had started a non-profit trust dedicated to promoting their conservation while simultaneously enriching the livelihoods of those in surrounding villages.

“We believe that responsible tourism can be a powerful force for positive change,” says Moman, who was listed as an A-List Travel Advisor for chimpanzee and gorilla safaris earlier this year by Travel + Leisure . “We are proud to support the communities and habitats that make gorilla trekking experiences possible.”

SHAUN S. RITCHIE/Courtesy of Volcanoes Safaris

What exactly does that look like in practice? For one, the lodges he operates — which now include five properties spread across the high mountain jungles of Rwanda and Uganda — are built by a local labor force who are paid salaries that exceed the going market rate. They also rely on locally sourced materials and incorporate eco-friendly technologies, including water recapture, to reduce energy consumption and waste.

Through the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust, a litany of ongoing projects improves infrastructure in the remote villages that border conservation land. In recent years, it has donated water tanks to these towns, improved road conditions, and set up solar energy sources, all while rewilding wetlands and ensuring the safety of the gorillas and chimpanzees that bring the tourists here.

Because Volcanoes Safaris was the first to bring five-star luxury to gorilla trekking two decades ago, with its now-legendary Virunga Lodge, the brand enjoys an edge of expertise over its competition. It’s had extra years to train and develop a knowledgeable workforce comprised exclusively of local talent.

Propping up these communities while protecting the wildlife is a complicated task. It is often viewed as an either-or supposition because these small villages turn to any form of tourism as a potential lifeline — even those that don’t employ best practices. But Moman is proving that you can serve both. When Volcanoes Safaris established its Kyambura Gorge Lodge back in 2009, it opened concurrently to an ecotourism project fueling conservation efforts in and around its namesake ridge. Within the immediate area is an isolated community of chimpanzees, and by creating a nearly two-mile-long buffer zone around the canyon, the population of these animals has climbed from 15 to 33 in the ensuing years.

On July 1, the company cut the ribbon on its latest offering, Kibale Lodge . Positioned along the Albertine Rift in southwestern Uganda, the eight-villa estate reinforces the ethos of its sister property at Kyambura Gorge. It will partner with the Jane Goodall Institute in the town of Kibale to help ensure the safety of neighboring primate populations, and it’s working with the Rwenzori Sculpture Foundation to support and showcase the output of local artisans.

None of these brand missions sacrifice anything to the quality of the hard product. In fact, they only enhance a sense of luxury routed in an authentic vernacular. A deluxe banda at the new Kibale Lodge brandishes plush kingsize bedding, a stone-ringed fireplace, and an unfettered sightline of the Rwenzori Mountains climbing high above the distant plain. It’s all contained charmingly under a vaulted ceiling thatched with exposed wooden beams. Personal butler service is offered to all guests, along with access to a pool and spa.

In many ways, the look and feel of the latest addition to the portfolio is an extension of what was laid down at Virunga Lodge two decades prior. That original property, suspended high on a spine between two of Rwanda’s largest lakes, remains a vibrant icon of five-star forest trekking. Each of its 12 spacious villas is appointed in a decor that Moman originally coined as “Rwandese Afro-chic.”

Rates there start at $1,030 per person during the low season of October through May and climb up to $2,230 for single occupancy if you book from June through the end of September, on par with the pricing you’ll find at the Kibale Lodge. It includes food, drink, post-trek massages, laundry, and butler services. There are cheaper places you can stay — indeed, the jungle trekking landscape is crowded with options in this day and age — but you’ll be hard-pressed to find an operator fully committed to the sustainable cause.

“Volcanoes Safaris is the pioneer of great ape tourism in East Africa and, for the last 25 years, has been solely focused on providing the premier gorilla and chimpanzee trekking experience,” Moman says. “But that’s all pretty hollow if we’re not providing social support for local communities.”

In this particular pursuit, Volcanoes Safaris wasn’t just the first; it remains the best.
