76ers teach young fans to ball like a pro on Summer Hoops Tour

Portrait of Kaitlyn McCormick

CAMDEN — A gymnasium here turned into a sea of red, white and blue as the Philadelphia 76ers kicked off a program to teach basketball skills to summer campers.

Groups of eager kids, aged 6 to 14, entered the gym through a tunnel of high-fives at the Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center.

They wore new 76ers T-shirts, reaching the ankles of some of the younger kids and perfectly complementing their light-up sneakers.

Fresh in their new duds, the group got a surprise visit from the 76ers' mascot, Franklin, who was sure to stir up some trouble by not following directions and running around the gym.

The team's drumline, the Sixers Stixers, also performed alongside dance team Squad 76, who brought gasps and cheers from the excited campers.

Exercises, instruction and relay races were led by Aris Watson, the team's social responsibility coordinator.

Music pumped through the gym, matched with the sounds of encouragement from camp volunteers and laughter from kids running through the different drills as basketballs (in Sixers colors, of course) took flight.

For two hours, campers scrambled between exercises for passing, dribbling, shooting and agility, even using an outside set of hoops in the 88-degree weather. A visit from an ice cream truck at the end of the afternoon surely made it easier to beat the summer heat in addition to a 76ers "swag bag."

More than basketball

For organizers from the 76ers and Kroc Center alike, the day was about much more than teaching kids how to make a shot or dribble a ball.

Major Richard Sanchez, the center's administrator, shared that he grew up as an inner-city kid in Brooklyn, where an opportunity like the July 9 event seemed unreachable.

"NBA potential or NBA dreams seemed far away," he said. "But you have kids here in Camden, and a major NBA team comes over here; I think it instills in them a potential to dream even bigger."

The Camden center was the first of 10 stops for the Jr. 76ers Summer Hoops Tour at parks, playgrounds and community centers in the tri-state area.

"We try to deliver the 76ers experience to kids who otherwise wouldn't get it," explained Fan Development Coordinator Christopher Adams. This summer marked the third season of the Jr.76ers tour.

"[There's] nothing like you make a basket or you make a good pass, and you get encouragement from your coach," he said. "It really instills confidence to go on, you know, not just when we're here but when we leave as well."

Jr. 76 Summer Hoops Tour Comes To Chester

76ers summer hoops tour

The Boys & Girls Club of Chester was abuzz with excitement as the BGCC gym was transformed into a mini Jr. 76ers stadium. With the iconic blue, white, and red banners proudly waving outside, young campers couldn't help but feel a rush of anticipation and enthusiasm for what promised to be a day filled with basketball fun.

A Day of Hoops, Fun, and Inspiration

The Jr. 76 Summer Hoops Tour made its grand appearance at the Boys & Girls Club of Chester on Tuesday, July 25th. Campers poured into the gym suited up in their 76ers Hoopers gear, and began their warm-up drills.

Skills and Drills

Campers started their day with warm-up drills that included stretching exercises to ensure the campers were ready to give their best on the court. The Jr 76 coaching staff guided our young athletes by working on their defensive and offensive techniques.

Games, Giveaways, and More!

The Jr. 76 Summer Hoops Tour offered more than just training techniques. Cheers and laughter echoed throughout the gymnasium as the campers were divided into teams. The Boys & Girls Club of Chester pulsated with excitement as the young athletes showcased their talent and passion for basketball.

At the beginning of the camp, the Jr. 76 coaching staff promised campers a day full of surprises. Halfway into their training, campers were greeted by a special guest, #44 of the Philadelphia 76ers', Paul Reed.

Campers enjoyed an exclusive Q&A with Reed where they asked him various questions ranging from his inspiration for basketball, how many years he has been playing, and what he enjoys most about the game.

Campers also received signed autographs, took selfies with Reed, and got personal coaching tips during their drills training. The campers joyfully reflected upon receiving valuable advice and words of encouragement from the 76ers' power forward.

“Any opportunity I get to come back and teach the youth something, spend my time with them, I always try to take advantage of it,” Reed said. “It’s like a moral thing.”

Hornets, Raequan Battle Agree To Exhibit 10 Deal

Free agent former West Virginia swingman Raequan Battle has agreed to an Exhibit 10 training camp contract with the Hornets , sources tell Rod Boone of The Charlotte Observer ( Twitter link ).

A 6’5″ swingman, Battle averaged 16.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per contest across 22 games with the Mountaineers as a fifth-year senior in 2023/24, posting a shooting line of .408/.339/.835. He played on Charlotte’s Summer League squad in July.

As Boone notes, Battle’s training camp deal may signify the Hornets’ interest in making him an affiliate player with their G League squad, the Greensboro Swarm.

Battle could also see his training camp contract converted to a two-way deal with the Hornets up until the day before the regular season begins. Charlotte currently has one open two-way slot available, with the other two committed to point guard KJ Simpson and center Moussa Diabate .

It’s more probable that Battle will be cut prior to the start of the year and will then become an affiliate player with the Swarm. Should a player be waived from an Exhibit 10 deal and then spend at least 60 days with that team’s NBAGL affiliate, he’d stand to earn a bonus worth as much as $77.5K.

Unlike the Spurs, the Hornets had a great off-season (the only other thing they should have done is let Bridges walk. Just trade him

USA hoops comeback keys Thursday’s Olympic audience

A pair of winning combinations — Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Kevin Durant for Team USA, and Nielsen, Adobe, daytime, primetime and more than seven different networks for NBC — delivered in the ratings Thursday.

Thursday’s United States-Serbia Olympic men’s basketball semifinal averaged a combined 7.9 million viewers across NBC’s various platforms, including 13.5 million for the second half, per Nielsen and Adobe Analytics. The full game aired on USA Network and Peacock, with the second half also simulcast on the NBC broadcast network.

The United States’ comeback win delivered the third-largest basketball audience of the Olympics thus far, trailing a pair of weekend morning windows on NBC during the group stage — USA-Serbia on the opening Sunday (10.9M) and USA-Puerto Rico on the middle Saturday (9.4M).

The basketball game counts toward NBC’s “primetime” average for Thursday, which was 28.5 million across a live afternoon airing and primetime replay — up 97% from the equivalent day of the COVID-delayed Tokyo Olympics three years ago (14.5M).

Because NBC is airing its usual primetime fare during the day, it is presenting a combined figure comprised of a live afternoon segment (2-5 PM ET) and traditional primetime window (8-11 PM). As the network is counting viewership across all of its platforms airing events during those windows, its primetime audience now includes events like basketball that would not typically count toward the primetime figure.

NBC did not disclose viewership for Wednesday’s primetime coverage upon repeated request. Based on the network’s reported Olympic-to-date averages, SMW estimates that the Wednesday figure was in the neighborhood of 26 million, the lowest of the Games thus far.

NBC’s “primetime” coverage of the Paris Summer Olympics is now averaging 31.6 million viewers combined across afternoon and primetime, Nielsen and Adobe Analytics, and all of the NBC networks — up 77% from Tokyo in 2021 (17.8M).

NBC should have a great Saturday. They were smart to move the women’s soccer gold medal game from USA cable to NBC broadcast. Never underestimate the popularity of international soccer in this country. I think this will get a huge number. I’m predicting 9.5 million. And for the men’s gold medal basketball game, I think team USAs comeback on Thursday will help the numbers. It’s the best possible matchup playing Wembayana and the home country France. I think this will be close to 15 million. I’m predicting 14.9 million.

I know you only publish U.S. ratings, but if you want on French site BeBasket they published local TV ratings for both men’s semis. France-Germany drew 6,21 million viewers on France 2, with a peak of 8,9 millions (45,3% share), but the numbers don’t include those ones on pay-tv Eurosport, so the final tally should be even higher. The other game, U.S. vs Serbia, drew 2,2 million viewers (14% share) on France 3, which is a big audience for a game that didn’t involve any local team.

Team USA Basketball is the finest. Go USA!!!

Jon, can you give a rating prediction for Saturdays men’s basketball gold medal game? Also the women’s soccer gold medal game? You think the men’s game will reach 15 million?

Men’s basketball should be comfortably over 11-12M. Don’t know if it gets to 15. No idea: women’s soccer.

Ranking NBA's five 2024 Christmas Day games: Celtics vs. 76ers leads list, with marquee names at the bottom

The 2024 nba christmas day schedule was reported this week, so we're ranking the five-game slate.

embiid-tatum-getty.png

The 2024 Paris Olympics are nearing their conclusion, and that means the portion of the NBA offseason that includes actual basketball will soon be over, and it will be more than two months before competitive games resume. Fortunately, the NBA knows this and is starting to whet our appetites with information on the games to come.

On Thursday, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported the league's 2024 Christmas Day slate. As always, the league's marquee holiday features five of the most anticipated games on the schedule. Here are the games in question:

  • San Antonio Spurs at New York Knicks
  • Minnesota Timberwolves at Dallas Mavericks
  • Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Celtics
  • Los Angeles Lakers at Golden State Warriors
  • Denver Nuggets at Phoenix Suns

This slate includes last season's champion (the Celtics), three of last season's four finalists and eight of the 10 teams with the best current championship odds. The reigning MVP ( Nikola Jokic ), Defensive Player of the Year ( Rudy Gobert ), Most Improved Player ( Tyrese Maxey ) and Rookie of the Year ( Victor Wembanyama ) will all be playing. So with that in mind... which of these games should we most excited for? Let's rank them.

5. Los Angeles Lakers at Golden State Warriors

It says quite a bit about a slate when a matchup between the two best players of an era, who faced off in the NBA Finals four times, are playing in its worst game. LeBron James vs. Stephen Curry is always delightful, and the last few years have produced several incredible regular-season matchups. But James and Curry are both playing for mediocre teams. This is the only game on the Christmas schedule to feature two teams that are not realistically in the championship picture. The Lakers and Warriors are like the eighth- and ninth-best teams in the field here, trailing only the Spurs. If this game had some sort of separate emotional resonance, like perhaps Klay Thompson returning to the Bay Area in a Lakers uniform, that might have pushed it up the list. But Thompson is a Maverick, and the Lakers and Warriors are Play-In-caliber teams. Factor in the possibility of injuries with all of the best players in this game in their 30s and it's just impossible to justify ranking it any higher.

4. San Antonio Spurs at New York Knicks

The last time Victor Wembanyama faced the Knicks, he posted a casual 40-point, 20-rebound double-double. That game was in San Antonio, but historically speaking, almost every NBA legend has at least one marquee regular-season performance at Madison Square Garden. LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kobe Bryant have all scored 50 or more points in games there. The chance that Wembanyama has his first great MSG performance on Christmas is enough to make this game appointment television. Unfortunately, the rest of his roster is still relatively weak. The Knicks are a championship contender, but they're playing a likely lottery opponent, and that knocks this game down the rankings a slot or two. Wembanyama vs. the Villanova alumni team will be fun, but doesn't quite crack the top three.

3. Denver Nuggets at Phoenix Suns

The Nuggets and Suns have history together. Nikola Jokic and Devin Booker have faced off in the playoffs twice. Neither series went seven games, but both featured some bad blood. When the Nuggets and Suns played on Christmas in 2022, it was a 128-125 overtime thriller in Denver's favor. Neither of these teams are particularly well-equipped to defend the other, either. Phoenix is going to have a below-average defense to throw at Jokic. The Nuggets just lost Kentavious Caldwell-Pope , which doesn't bode well for them in defending a team with three star perimeter scorers. Expect an up-tempo shootout in this one.

2. Minnesota Timberwolves at Dallas Mavericks

The Western Conference finals may have only gone five games, but four of them were close. The first two games were decided by four combined points. Game 4 was decided by five, and while the final margin of Game 3 was nine points, but it was tied with under four minutes to play. Minnesota's matchup issues against Dallas persist, but perhaps another year of experience (especially after an Olympic run) will give Anthony Edwards the boost he needs to match Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving shot-for-shot down the stretch in this matchup. The final few minutes were the only noncompetitive portions of those games between Dallas and Minnesota last year. If Edwards steps up, this one will be a doozy.

1. Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Celtics

Come on, what did you expect? The defending champions against the team that had the best offseason? Two northeastern cities with a literal century of bad sports blood? Joel Embiid against the team that has knocked him out of the playoffs three times? Any matchup between the three Atlantic Division heavyweights in New York, Boston and Philadelphia is going to be a must-watch. A Christmas bout between perhaps the two best teams in the conference is one of the best games on the entire regular-season schedule. There's a very good chance these teams play in May. If you tune into any game on Christmas, it should be the possible preview for that postseason matchup.
