Top Things to Do Along Chicago's North Shore

Bordering Chicago along Lake Michigan, the communities of the North Shore seem farther from the bustle of downtown, thanks to abundant green spaces, including the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Midwest Living's experienced editors create best-in-class travel, lifestyle, food, home and garden content you won't find anywhere else. We're loudly, proudly Midwestern, and we're passionate about helping our audience explore and create through award-winning storytelling.

The North Shore suburbs of Chicago—stretching from Evanston to the Wisconsin border along the Lake Michigan shore—combine village vibes with abundant natural resources, making a perfect base for a weekend getaway. Here's our guide to the best things to do, places to eat and places to stay in North Shore communities like Evanston, Wilmette, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Forest and Skokie.

In Evanston, Northwestern University's ivied lakefront campus beckons for a stroll. Shakespeare Garden on the university campus shows off plants and trees mentioned in the Bard's works.

Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park features more than 60 large-scale contemporary works in a beautiful setting. Make the most of this two-mile long park with a free public tour, self-guided tour or private tour.

The Green Bay Trail between Winnetka and Highland Park runs parallel to the Metra commuter rail line, taking cyclists and walkers on a route flanked by restaurants, shops, parks and lovely older homes.

Relax in the sand and water at North Shore beaches, including those in Evanston, Glencoe and Winnetka. One great option: Sunrise Beach in Lake Bluff—a secluded, picturesque beach perfect for a quiet getaway.

Marvel at the Bahá'í House of Worship in Wilmette, an architectural wonder that welcomes all for meditation. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come each year to the only Baháʼí House of Worship in North America (and only one of eight in the world ) to explore its tranquil gardens and beautiful architecture.

See Evanston's Grosse Point Lighthouse from the Lighthouse Beach. Built in 1873, the Grosse Point Lighthouse helped vessels navigate along the shallow coastline to Chicago's harbor. During warmer months, visitors can climb the 113-foot-tall tower that overlooks Lake Michigan as well as explore the interpretive center.

Lose yourself in the 385 acres (about 290 football fields) of gardens and natural areas at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe. Featuring 28 gardens, four natural areas and a variety of programs and events year-round, the Garden is a must-visit. If you're in the area towards the end of the year, be sure to check out the annual Lightscape illuminated trail.

Let kids play the role of doctor, automobile designer or veterinarian at Kohl Children's Museum in Glenview.

See holograms of survivors telling their stories at Skokie's Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. One of the largest Holocaust museums in the United States, this institution teaches the history and legacy of the Holocaust through immersive exhibits. The exhibit "I'll Have What She's Having": The Jewish Deli (October 22, 2023-April 14, 2024) explores how Jewish delicatessens became a part of American food culture and the role of delis for Holocaust survivors and refugees.

Where to Eat

At Hewn in Evanston, taste artisan breads fermented with wild yeast for richer flavors. Buy a loaf, or try the pastries and sandwiches from this independently owned bakery.

Eat a famous Hackneyburger (a half-pound beef patty) on dark rye at Hackney's on Harms, a Glenview institution since 1939. French Fried Onions have been a staple on Hackney's menu for decades as well.

Grilled octopus, lamb-and-beef gyros and egg-lemon soup highlight the Greek fare at Avli in Winnetka. Pair your dish with one of 130 Greek wines.

A local favorite, Union Pizzeria in Evanston elevates the traditional wood-fired Neapolitan pizza with toppings like lamb sausage, Gaeta olives, béchamel sauce and Calabrian chili oil. Concertgoers can enjoy their delicious pies from Union in the neighboring intimate music venue, SPACE.

Originally operating as a food truck, La Cocinita now operates a restaurant in the Evanston community, serving contemporary Venezuelan-inspired street food. One favorite: arepas, delectable cornmeal patties filled with a variety of flavors.

Where to Stay

Deer Path Inn has been a fixture in downtown Lake Forest since 1929. This boutique hotel, styled like a 15th-century English manor house, offers guests luxury lodging as well as dining experiences such as afternoon tea, pub favorites in the cozy wood-paneled White Hart Pub, or fine dining in the elegant English Room.

Just blocks from Northwestern University's campus, the 119-room Graduate Evanston pays homage to local history and campus traditions with details such as Midwestern-theme artwork and decor in shades of Northwestern purple.

For couples wanting a romantic getaway, Sybaris in Northbrook offers suites with indoor private pools or whirlpools (some rooms even have waterfalls).

You'll find reliable national-branded properties throughout the North Shore such as Hampton Inn & Suites Chicago North Shore/Skokie , Hyatt House Chicago/Evanston and Hilton Garden Inn Chicago North Shore/Evanston.

Things To Do On Chicago's North Shore

From the local experts at Chicago ’ s North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau

Bordering downtown Chicago along Lake Michigan, Chicago’s North Shore offers green space and pristine shorelines chock full of activities for couples, families and friends looking for a quick drive-in getaway. The area is complete with a scenic byway along the lakefront rich in natural beauty. Downtown Chicago in your sights? Stay on the North Shore and save on parking and take a 30-minute train to Chicago city center.

Glencoe, Skokie

Start with breakfast at Hometown Coffee & Juice in downtown Glenview. Whether you fancy a Hometown Toast – Avocado, Garden Caprese or Apple Almond – or a Bagel Melt, Smoothie, Espresso or Cold Pressed Juice, you can find it all at the best spot for a modern breakfast.

After breakfast, head west in Glencoe to the Chicago Botanic Garden , the 5th largest public garden in the U.S., which has outdoor fun for the family! The Grand Tram Tour , open through late fall, lets you relax through a 2.3-mile narrated tour of the garden’s highlights including the Japanese Garden and spectacular views of the 81 acres of the water spaces. Don’t miss Night of 1,000 Jack-o'-Lanterns  where more than 1,000 hand-carved pumpkins—some as large as 150 pounds—will light up the night at this Halloween event. Lightscape  returns mid-November to early January, a holiday event which sold out last year. Experience a captivating world of light, color, and sound. Walk through the sparkling Cathedral of Light, watch lights glimmer and dance, and tune in to the playful choir of singing trees.

Less than one mile away is Northbrook Court , a spectacular indoor shopping center boasting Neiman Marcus, H&M, Sephora and many favorite retailers. Tucked in the north end of the center is Di Pescara  which specializes in fresh, meticulously selected seafood, hand rolled sushi, and a satisfying range of Italian and global specialties.

No visit to Chicago’s North Shore is complete without time spent at the Illinois Holocaust Museum , the largest in the Midwestern United States. The museum, located in Skokie, brings a unique cultural experience where visitors can explore important issues of tolerance. The groundbreaking Take a Stand Center allows visitors to experience interactive galleries, including The Survivor Stories Experience which utilizes three-dimensional interactive technology and allows guests to ask Holocaust survivors questions and receive personal responses. Check out the current exhibitions at the museum .

Harken back to an old school supper club, and near the museum relax with a cocktail and peruse EJ’s Place’s menu of prime aged steaks and chops, pristine seafood, and traditional homemade Italian specialties. It's a North Shore favorite with exemplary service. Skokie’s first brewery, Sketchbook Brewing Company , is worth the stop to see their new space in a reclaimed industrial building and taste one of their renowned ales with great names such as Honeybird Pale Ale, Pinky Sweater, Orange Door, Night Game and Snowy Owl, to name a few.

After your delicious and beyond filling – but in a good way – dinner and nightcap, it’s time to get some rest! You are just steps away from the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel . A warm chocolate chip cookie welcomes you and an even warmer reception from an attentive staff following the strictest health and safety protocols. The spacious guest rooms feature comfortable Sweet Dreams beds, flat screen TVs and complimentary wireless Internet access. Brought your swimsuit and goggles? The hotel features an indoor-outdoor pool and fitness center. Stop by  Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center for late night or early outdoor shopping the next day!

Now, it's time to head east to Evanston, located on Lake Michigan and home to the Big Ten’s Northwestern University. The  Halim Time & Glass Museum  is in a spectacular new building with a Tiffany-inspired dome, and it showcases the Halim family’s personally curated collection of more than 1,100 timepieces and more than 70 stained glass pieces of art. Walk back in time and experience the early 20th century by visiting the Charles Gates Dawes House , a historic house museum built in 1894. This chateau-like lakefront mansion was home to the 30th Vice President of the U.S. from 1909 until his death. The house is the starting point of Evanston walking architectural tours. Topics of tours include Historic Apartment Buildings, Lakeshore Historic District, Burnham in Evanston and downtown Evanston.

All that walking can make you hungry. Time for lunch at Farmhouse Evanston , a Midwestern craft tavern specializing in local food and drink. All burgers, condiments and sodas are made from scratch. More than 28 craft beers on and Michigan wines on tap. They are also known for their amazing cheese curds – yum!

University towns are special and Evanston is no exception. Amenities that are important to students and academics, are that much more special for locals and visitors alike. Culture, food and recreation are all found in abundance. Stroll through the campus of Northwestern University to see their renowned Shakespeare Garden , Deering Library, Dearborn Observatory and the walking path along Lake Michigan with stunning views of Chicago’s skyline.

Rent a Divvy bike nearby and take a short ride along the lakefront. Just north of Evanston you'll find the  only Baha’i House of Worship in North America. Breathtaking in its immense presence with its detailed lace-like architecture and surrounding gardens, guests are always in awe. After your visit, continue north along the lakefront byway, Sheridan Road, and stop in small downtown villages for a refreshment and view magnificent homes and landscapes.

Hearty BBQ sounds perfect after a day of touring. Smylie Bros. Brewing Company is where you can lean back with some cold, craft brewed beer and lean forward over great pizza and mouthwatering BBQ.

Spend the night at the Graduate Hotel in Evanston , a boutique hotel located in a historic building just steps from Northwestern University . The cozy decor offers a tribute to the university and the history of Evanston.

The Down Lo

The Best Things to Do in North Shore Chicago aka How to Survive Suburbia

visit chicago north shore

Having grown up on the North shore forever epitomized by films like  Mean Girls,   Home Alone and Breakfast Club (really all John Hughes movies) Chicago’s north suburbs are somewhat like living in Pleasantville. The North Shore is comprised of a handful of affluent suburbs with the biggest houses bordering the lake. The area is generally accepted to include Evanston, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Forest, and Lake Bluff with a few others on the outskirts.

Coming of age in an area like that is interesting for a number of reasons. For one, most of the town shuts down at 10 pm, which is just begging you to get in trouble out of sheer boredom. Then there’s the whole hyperbole from gym class being called “kinetic wellness” to various other traditions like wearing white wedding dresses to graduation that seem totally normal at the time, but once you get out of the bubble, you realize how ridiculous it is.

Since high school, I’ve learned to appreciate the ‘burbs for what they are, and although I try to stay as far away as possible, there are a few North shore gems worth going back for.

Eat and Imbibe

The best restaurants in the North shore run the gamut from high-end cuisine to grab and go lunch spots with many offshoots of popular Chicago locales – so much so you don’t even need to go into the city for a good meal. Here are a few not to miss dining options.

Pete Miller’s (Evanston) and Ruth’s Chris (Northbrook) are the go-to celebration spots if you’re craving a great steak, but for more innovative dining Libertad (Skokie) offers Latin American small plates in a low-key neighborhood  foodie spot  that’s gaining serious national notoriety. Executive Chef/Owner, Armando Gonzalez, comes from a rich culinary resume that includes Mas, Bin 36 and mk. And with one of  Food and Wine’ s top sommeliers on staff, enjoy views of the open kitchen, exceptional food, and a glass that’s never empty.

Local ethnic favorites include That Little Mexican Café (Evanston), which has been serving Northwestern students for 20+ years, Viet Nom Nom (Evanston) for comfort pho-od and accoutrements, Campagnola (Evanston) for upscale Italian, Szechwan North (Glenview) for approachable Chinese, and Restaurant Michael (Winnetka) for haute French cuisine.

Bangers & Lace (Evanston) is an offshoot of the popular Wicker Park beer and sausage spot, while Boltwood (Evanston) is the brainchild of the Chef de Cuisine from The Publican. Five & Dime (Evanston) is home to one of the only rooftops on the Northshore, while Blind Faith Café (Evanston) has been dishing up approachable vegetarian cuisine for 30+ years.

We can’t talk North shore without mentioning the ever-so-craveable fast-casual dining. Pita Inn (Skokie) is totally worth the commute from the city and boasts some of the best hummus and falafel in the greater  Chicagoland area . And with a lunch that’ll run you less than $5, it’s a steal in that neck of the woods. Be sure not to miss their homemade hot sauce – it really is hot! Kaufman’s Bagel & Delicatessen (Skokie) and Max & Benny’s (Northbrook) have some of the best bagels and lox for those craving deli foods, while Superdawg (Wheeling) is one of Chicago’s most iconic and timeless hot dog stands complete with carhops.

See the Sights

The Baha’i Temple (Wilmette) is by far the North Shore’s biggest attraction. Visible from Sheridan Road (the north section of Lakeshore Drive), it’s an architectural marvel as much as its celebrated for its diverse religious beliefs. One of just seven remaining Baha’i Temples in the world, everyone is allowed to appreciate sacred space and wander the exquisite gardens.

Catch a concert at Ravinia Festival  (Highland Park). The see and be seen venue in the area, Ravinia is North America’s longest running music festival. The home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, they also attract big-name artists and major headliners from Lady Gaga and John Legend to Tony Bennett and Aretha Franklin. North shore moms vie to outdo each other with the most elaborate lawn spreads so pack your finest china, charcuterie, and candles because picnicking here is a summer must (you may even want to invest in season tickets).

Explore the Chicago Botanical Gardens (Glencoe). An immaculately landscaped 27 gardens spread across 385 acres, the botanic gardens are one of the only in the country to be museum accredited and the second most-visited gardens of their size in the U.S. They’re renowned for their bonsais and shoreline trails.

Take advantage of the lake. The North shore has some of the best beaches in Chicago perfect for posting up and watching the waves. If the kiddos are in tow, many of the local pools also have slides and waterparks if you want to make it a family day out.

Shop ‘til You Drop

Shopping is virtually a sport in the suburbs and a major pastime on Chicago’s north shore. Old Orchard Mall , ( Skokie) made famous by Mean Girls , does exist (and is a really good mall), but unlike the movie, it’s actually all outdoors. The area is also dotted with high-end gift shops popular boutiques like E Street Denim (Highland Park), which is by far the best place for jeans. 12,000 square feet of brand name brattiness, they have about 12,000 pairs from 60-70 different designer labels in hundreds of fits and styles. If you can’t find a good pair of pants there, you may as well just give up.

Cady Heron, is that you?

Chicago's eclectic neighborhoods, world-class attractions and lakeside setting can easily fill a travel itinerary. But when you've worn a path through the Windy City and are looking for a change of scenery, you'll find a bevy of destinations within a few hours, from Lake Michigan retreats to quaint towns. U.S. News weighed expert and traveler feedback, as well as sights, accessibility and culture, to bring you this list of the best day trips from Chicago. Be sure to vote for your favorite spots below to influence next year's ranking.

Lake Geneva

Madison, wi, new buffalo, south haven, wisconsin dells, indiana dunes national park.

visit chicago north shore

Sitting 80 miles northwest of Chicago, just across the Wisconsin border, Lake Geneva has long been a summer home haven for Chicago's elite, so much so that it was dubbed the "Newport of the West." Like its Rhode Island counterpart , Lake Geneva's shoreline is dotted with historic estates sure to impress history buffs. Today, visitors can find an abundance of activities year-round, from beaches and boating in the summer to skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. When you're not enjoying the great outdoors, treat yourself to some boutique shopping, indulge at a wine bar or brewery, or explore the grandeur of Yerkes Observatory.

visit chicago north shore

The home of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, this city nearly 150 miles northwest of Chicago has plenty to do beyond its well-known campus. Surrounded by five lakes, Madison is an outdoor paradise, offering boat rentals, beaches, parks and an enchanting botanical garden. When the weather is warm, join coeds on the Memorial Union Terrace for a pitcher of beer, or head to the observation deck at the domed Wisconsin State Capitol building for a view of lakes Mendota and Monona. But the fun doesn’t end when the temperatures drop: Embrace Madison's notorious winter chill while ice fishing, biking on frozen lakes and attending unique festivals.

visit chicago north shore

This small Michigan town may only be 70 miles east of Chicago, but with its slow pace and relaxed atmosphere, it feels worlds away. New Buffalo's location on Lake Michigan grants visitors access to 16 miles of shoreline, including 260-foot dunes at Warren Dunes State Park and an amenity-filled town beach. The town's proximity to wineries, farms and orchards along the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail adds to its allure, as do its chic boutiques and waterfront dining options.

visit chicago north shore

A fraction of the size of Chicago, Milwaukee is ideal for escaping the Windy City's crowds while still enjoying exceptional cultural and culinary experiences. Plus, it's easily accessible via Amtrak train; the rail ride from Chicago to Milwaukee is just about 90 minutes. Start your day at the Milwaukee Art Museum, known as much for its sculptural design as it is for its exhibits, before touring the Pabst Mansion, built in 1892. Beyond legendary beer, cheese and bratwurst, all of which you can find at the Milwaukee Public Market, the city's thriving dining scene boasts restaurants helmed by James Beard Award winners.

visit chicago north shore

One of Michigan's most popular beach towns, South Haven is a quintessential summer haunt for Midwesterners. Follow the shoreline of Lake Michigan just more than 120 miles east, and you'll arrive at this idyllic town bursting with bed-and-breakfast accommodations, seven public beaches and locally owned shops. Spend a carefree day basking in the sun, eating old-fashioned ice cream and kayaking on the lake. If you're not in a rush, stay for a sunset cruise before driving back to the city.

visit chicago north shore

With its restored electric streetcars and original buildings (including the century-old soda fountain at Coopers Uptown), nostalgia-infused Kenosha warrants the 60-mile trip north. Perched on Lake Michigan's western shore, this Wisconsin city offers the outdoor pursuits of a beach town with a more robust itinerary. The lakefront is undoubtedly Kenosha's most defining attraction, complete with a sculpture walk, a bike trail and two historical lighthouses. But the city also features several accredited museums, such as the Kenosha Public Museum, and a host of entertainment options that make it worth a visit even in cooler months.

Those with kids in tow will want to pack up the car for a trip to the Wisconsin Dells. This town, known as the Waterpark Capital of the World, sits approximately 200 miles northwest of Chicago and is home to the largest concentration of indoor and outdoor water parks in the world. Prefer to stay dry? The Dells features scores of additional adventures for active families, ranging from feeding animals at the Wisconsin Deer Park to amphibious vehicle tours along the Wisconsin River.

visit chicago north shore

For a Hallmark-esque escape, look no further than this tiny Illinois town roughly 160 miles northwest of Chicago. Galena's historic Main Street oozes charm with its well-preserved 19th-century buildings, which house ice cream parlors, candy shops, boutiques and antique stores. What's more, the rural roads surrounding this Mississippi River Valley locale are begging for a scenic drive to the region's wineries. If you're into history, save time for a Galena Trolley Tour, on which your guide will take you to the home of Ulysses S. Grant and regale you with stories about this mining town's past.

visit chicago north shore

Trade Chicago's congested Lake Shore Drive for 15 miles of untouched shoreline with a quick day trip to Indiana Dunes National Park. In less than an hour (the dunes are located about 50 miles east of the city), you'll be digging your toes into the soft sand, splashing around in Lake Michigan's chilly water or working up a sweat on the park's 50-plus miles of trails. To really elevate your heartrate, hike up the 120-foot Mount Baldy dune on a ranger-led tour, or take it easy on the park's less challenging trails through forests and marshes.

400 Lake Shore scores full building permit for the North Tower

visit chicago north shore

We’re still very early in the construction process at 400 Lake Shore , but the City of Chicago has already issued the full building permit for Related Midwest’s residential skyscraper. That beauty came through on August 8, which means LR Contracting , BOWA Construction , and Goebel Forming can keep right on going until they’ve completed all 72 stories of the North Tower..

visit chicago north shore

There are a pair of pending permits still in the works, for two construction hoists. And we’ll be seeing a tower-crane jump (or 6) in the near future as well. But for now, we’re happy to celebrate what we just got. Congrats, everyone.

As you can see in the photos, the off-ramp from Lake Shore Drive that got chopped off looks like an off-ramp again, and the concrete core outshines the old Chicago Spire Hole. As it should; that thing had worn out its welcome. Like, 15 years ago.

The pics, all taken 8.8.2024:

Chicagoans weigh in on $3.4 billion redesign of DuSable Lake Shore Drive

Chicagoans got their chance to sound off on brand-new designs for the massive "Redefine DuSable Lake Shore Drive" project during a community meeting at Truman College.

CHICAGO - Chicagoans got their chance to sound off on brand-new designs for the massive "Redefine DuSable Lake Shore Drive" project during a community meeting at Truman College.

The estimated $3.4 billion project would rebuild the 22 bridges and 12 junctions on the north drive from Grand to Hollywood.

"We as a city have to improve our aging infrastructure and also do shoreline protection for climate resiliency," said Commissioner Tom Carney, of the Chicago Dept. of Transportation.

The latest designs feature more green space, dedicated bus lanes on some exit ramps and a possible reduction in lanes north of Irving Park to reduce car traffic.

"Improved transit, better access to the lake, better park experience, making it safer," Carney said.

Chicago and Illinois transportation officials unveiled the final conceptual designs Thursday evening. Chicago residents got their chance to provide some feedback.

"The downtown is a disaster. Red light stopping, which is insane. So getting rid of Chicago Avenue interfaces where you have red lights that stop traffic, that's the biggest one, and the curve needs to get straightened out," said one resident.

Outside, a handful of state representatives and alderpeople joined bike and transit activists, some of whom are calling on the city and state to get rid of the drive altogether in favor of transit and green space.

At the very least, public officials should put the brakes on the project, said 49th Ward Alderwoman Maria Hadden.

"We know that we need to see active transportation prioritized and a plan for the future of DuSable Lake Shore Drive. We need to see bus rapid transit lines at minimum, at minimum," Hadden said.

Commissioner Carney said he wants shovels in the ground as soon as possible. The money will have to come from a mix of federal and state sources.
