Los Angeles considers restricting tour buses near Marilyn Monroe's home

August 16, 2024 / 6:18 PM PDT / CBS/City News Service

In a 13-0 vote, the Los Angeles City Council approved a motion to explore restrictions for tour buses driving around Marilyn Monroe's home in Brentwood.

The motion, which Councilwoman Traci Park introduced, orders the Department of Transportation to evaluate street segments to restrict tour bus operations at:

  • 5th Helena Drive between Carmelina Avenue and 5th Helena Drive's cul-de-sac
  • Carmelina Avenue between Sunset and San Vicente boulevards

Park spearheaded the effort to have Monroe's home designated as a  historical cultural monument  when the current owners tried to demolish it last year.

In July 2023, real estate heiress Brinah Milstein and her husband, TV producer Roy Bank, purchased the Spanish hacienda-style residence located at 12305 West 5th Helena Drive in Brentwood for $8.35 million. The couple, who owns the property next door, obtained a city permit to demolish the Monroe home, which was initially granted but later revoked.

The couple sued the city of L.A. in May to complete the tear-down.

Monroe was found dead of a drug overdose at the home in 1962. It is the first and only residence she owned independently, according to the  New York Times .

After a lengthy legal battle between the city and the current owners, the City Council voted to designate Monroe's home as a historical monument.

"There is no other person or place in the city of Los Angeles as iconic as Marilyn Monroe and her Brentwood home," Park said in June.

Los Angeles is exploring whether to restrict tour buses near Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood home

Los Angeles is exploring whether to clamp down on tour buses driving near a home once owned by Marilyn Monroe, under a proposal backed Friday by the City Council.

The Brentwood home was designated by the city as a historic monument in June, a move that helps protect the residence from demolition, after its new owners began preparing to tear the house down.

Monroe bought the home for $75,000 in 1962 and died there of an apparent overdose six months later. Councilmember Traci Park, who represents the area where the home is located, argued that demolishing the home “would be a devastating blow for historic preservation.”

The owners sued the city over the push to make the house a landmark, asserting that it had undergone major alterations since Monroe died. “There is not a single piece of the house that includes any physical evidence that Ms. Monroe ever spent a day at the house,” the lawsuit said.

In June, a judge turned down the owners’ push for a preliminary injunction to halt the historic designation process. The council voted soon after to recognize the home as a monument.

Amid the debate over the Brentwood house, neighbors had complained that a flock of tourists and fans were bringing unwanted traffic to the area.

Park proposed that the L.A. Department of Transportation assess whether to restrict tour bus operations on two stretches near the historic home, one on 5th Helena Drive, the other on Carmelina Avenue.

The City Council voted 13-0 on Friday to move forward with that evaluation, a step that could ultimately lead to barring tour buses during particular hours or all times.

Times staff writer Jack Flemming contributed to this report.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

News, notes and thoughts:

10 October, 2012   / On Tuesday, powerful explosion occurred about 20 km from Orenburg. The power of the explosion was 3-4 kilotons of TNT, which is equal to the blast of 300 train cars with shells. This is not the first such incident in Russia in recent years - explosions at ammunition depots occur with surprising regularity.

History of Orenburg

Foundation of orenburg.

In October 1715, a significant part of the meeting of Kazakh elders headed by Abulkhair Khan spoke out in favor of adopting an act on the voluntary annexation of the Younger Zhuz of Kazakhs (a significant part of today’s western Kazakhstan) to the Russian Empire. In 1734, Abulkhair Khan pledged to protect the security of the Russian borders and merchant caravans passing through the Kazakh steppes.

As a reward for this, he asked to approve the khan’s succession to the throne for his family and build a town with a fortress on the Or River, where he could find refuge in case of danger. In 1735, the Orenburg fortress was laid at the confluence of the Or and Yaik (Ural) rivers.

In 1739, river floods in this place forced preparations for the construction of a new town with the same name downstream of the Yaik River, on Krasnaya (Red) Mountain. In 1741, it was founded. The old town was named the Orsk fortress (the present city of Orsk), but the construction of the new town did not begin as the chosen place was treeless, rocky and remote from the river - unsuitable for town construction.

In 1743, Orenburg was founded for the third time, on the site of the former Berd fortress, at the confluence of the Sakmara River with the Yaik. Today, it is the historic center of the city. Since Orenburg was originally founded on the Or River, it was named Orenburg - a town on the Or. In connection with such a confusing history of founding, Orenburg is called three times conceived and once born.

In 1744, it became the center of the Orenburg Governorate stretching from the Volga River to Siberia, from the Kama River to the Caspian Sea. Orenburg was built as a fortress town guarding the southeastern border of the Russian Empire. At the same time, it was supposed to serve as a center of trade with the peoples of the East. Therefore Orenburg had both military and commercial significance.

More Historical Facts…

Orenburg in the late 18th - 19th centuries

During the peasant war of 1773-1775, Orenburg underwent a long siege under the leadership of Yemelyan Pugachev. At that time, it was the main fortress in the south-east of the country. Powerful fortifications allowed Orenburg to withstand a six-month siege. After the suppression of the uprising, as punishment, Empress Catherine II renamed the Yaitsk Cossacks into the Ural Cossacks, the Yaitsk town - into Uralsk, the Yaik River - into the Ural River.

For the successful defense of the fortress, the townspeople of Orenburg were presented with the cross of St. Andrew the First-Called (X). Today, this cross is depicted on the flag and coat of arms of Orenburg.

In 1811, the population of Orenburg was about 5,400 people. At the end of the 18th - beginning of the 19th centuries, the first Catholics appeared in Orenburg, since after the divisions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth a large number of Poles were exiled here. In the 19th century, the Polish diaspora in Orenburg increased because of the exiled participants of the Polish uprisings. In 1847, a Catholic church was built and consecrated in Orenburg (this building has been preserved and can be found at 8th Marta Street, 24).

In 1862, the Orenburg fortress was officially abolished due to the loss of its strategic importance. The functions of a border outpost on the southern borders of the Russian Empire were transferred to Tashkent. The liquidation of the fortress coincided with the abolition of serfdom and the development of capitalism in the country, which gave a powerful impetus to the development of Orenburg. In 1863, its population was about 27,600 people.

The town was a major center of trade between the Russian Empire and Central Asia. The local industry (production of flour, oil, leather) began to develop rapidly with the construction of the Samara - Orenburg railway in 1877. The Orenburg region also became famous for its downy shawls knitted from the down of specially bred Orenburg goats.

Orenburg also became a major trade and distribution center for livestock and meat coming from the Kazakh steppes. In 1881, the first in the Russian Empire plant for the production of condensed milk was opened in Orenburg. In 1894, the construction of the Kazan Cathedral was completed - one of the main symbols of the city (destroyed in the 1930s).

At the beginning of the 20th century, Orenburg was a major trade and economic center. In 1905, the construction of the Tashkent railway was completed, which opened the way to Central Asia and made the city an important transport hub.

In 1914, the population of Orenburg, the largest city in the Urals, was about 100 thousand people. During the anti-German campaign in connection with the outbreak of the First World War, the Orenburg City Duma considered the issue of renaming the city (at the same time Saint Petersburg was renamed Petrograd). Here are some of the proposed new names: Oriengrad, Oriendar, Yaitsk, Priuralsk, Neplyuevsk, Sakmaro-Uralsk. However, the renaming did not take place at that time.

Interesting fact. Orenburg was the first capital of Soviet Kazakhstan. In 1920, this city became the administrative center of the created Kyrgyz Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic (the Kazakhs were officially called the Kyrgyz at that time). In April 1925, the Kyrgyz ASSR was renamed the Kazakh ASSR, and its capital was moved from Orenburg to Ak-Mechet, renamed Kzyl-Orda.

Orenburg became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. In December 1934, it became the capital of Orenburg Oblast. In the 1930s, almost all of its more than 40 Orthodox religious buildings were demolished. Without these architectural dominants, Orenburg largely lost its unique and attractive historical appearance.

On December 26, 1938, Orenburg was renamed Chkalov in honor of the deceased test pilot V.P. Chkalov, despite the fact that Chkalov had never visited this city. The renaming was also explained by the fact that there were plans to make Orenburg “the aviation capital of the USSR”. In 1939, a downy shawl factory was opened. The population of Orenburg was about 172 thousand people.

During the Second World War, about 40 factories were evacuated to Orenburg and it became an industrial center. By May 1942, the number of people evacuated here reached 75 thousand. By 1943, the gross industrial output of the Orenburg region increased more than 4 times since the beginning of the war.

Orenburg in the second half of the 20th century and beyond

On November 7, 1953, a monument to Valery Chkalov was unveiled. On December 4, 1957, the original name was returned to the city - Orenburg. In 1959, its population was 267 thousand people.

Yuri Gagarin, the first human to journey into outer space, trained as a pilot at the Orenburg Military Aviation Flight School. Gagarin is an honorary citizen of Orenburg. In 1961, the MiG-15 - a fighter jet that cadet Gagarin flew on - was installed on a pedestal near the aviation school. The House-Museum of Cosmonautics was also opened there with some of Gagarin’s personal belongings.

In November 1966, on the left bank of the Ural River, not far from the city, a large Orenburg oil and gas condensate field was discovered. A new Orenburg territorial-industrial complex of all-Union significance began to form. It was based on gas production, processing and transportation enterprises. This event can be called the second birth of Orenburg. In less than 10 years, it became one of the largest natural gas suppliers in Russia.

In 1979, according to the All-Union census, the population of Orenburg was 458 thousand people. In connection with the development of the Orenburg gas condensate field, urban planning activities received a powerful impetus for rapid development. About 30 kilometers from Orenburg, a unique gas processing plant, the largest in Europe, was built according to the project of French specialists.

In 1989, the population of Orenburg was about 546 thousand people. After the collapse of the USSR, Orenburg experienced some depopulation in the 1990s. In the late 1990s, the gas field began to run out.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the development of the city began again, associated primarily with the activities of the enterprise “Gazprom dobycha Orenburg”.

Orenburg - Features

According to popular belief, Orenburg is located both in Europe and Asia. On the pedestrian bridge across the Ural River you can see a symbolic sign of the border between Europe and Asia. However, this border was not officially recognized by the International Geographical Union in 1959, when the opinion of Soviet scientists was accepted about the border between Europe and Asia.

By their definition, the Ural River is a natural water border between Asia and Europe only in its upper reaches on the territory of Russia. In the place where Orenburg is located, it is a completely European river and from a geographical point of view Orenburg can be considered a European city.

The climate of Orenburg is moderately continental transitional to sharply continental. Summers are hot and dry, winters are moderately cold. Temperatures fluctuate greatly depending on the time of day and wind direction. In summer, the temperature can rise to plus 40 degrees Celsius or drop to plus 5 degrees Celsius.

In winter, the weather ranges from mild frosts to severe cold weather, sometimes mild thaws or severe colds down to minus 40 degrees Celsius. The average temperature in January is minus 11.8 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 22.3 degrees Celsius.

On the coat of arms of Orenburg repeating the historical coat of arms adopted at the end of the 18th century, you can see a schematic representation of the Ural River. The Azure Cross of St. Andrew (X) is an award given to the garrison of Orenburg for its successful defense during the siege by the troops of Yemelyan Pugachev (the peasant war of 1773-1775).

In the industry of Orenburg, the leading places belong to the gas production and gas processing industries, mechanical engineering and metalworking. The enterprises of the chemical industry, food and light industries are also developed.

Orenburg is a large railway junction where the railway lines to Samara, Orsk, Ufa, Uralsk (Kazakhstan), Aktobe (Kazakhstan) intersect. The federal highway R239 Kazan - Orenburg - Akbulak - the border with the Republic of Kazakhstan passes through the city. Orenburg Central International Airport named after Yuri Gagarin offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Ufa, Novy Urengoy.

One of the symbols of this city are unique Orenburg shawls made of goat down, which are distinguished by fine workmanship, original pattern, beauty of decoration, durability, and ability to keep warm.

Remarkable architectural monuments that have survived since the founding of the city, monumental art, local traditions create a special unique atmosphere of the city and rightfully allow Orenburg to be considered a unique city with a rich culture and history.

Hurricane ernesto weakens into tropical storm with 70 mph winds as it moves away from bermuda.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hurricane Ernesto weakened into a tropical storm late Saturday as it moved away from Bermuda over open waters of the Atlantic after crossing over the tiny British territory early in the day with heavy rains and strong winds.

Ernesto forced residents to stay indoors, and more than 23,000 people lost power, officials said. By late Saturday, the storm’s maximum sustained winds had decreased to 70 mph (110 kph). It was centered about 140 miles (225 kilometers) northeast of Bermuda and moving north-northeast at 8 mph (13 kph).

The National Hurricane Center had warned of strong winds, a dangerous storm surge and significant coastal flooding for Bermuda.

Tropical Storm Ernesto i

The center said 7 to 9 inches (17-22.5 centimeters) of rain was expected to fall on Bermuda. “This rainfall will likely result in considerable life-threatening flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas on the island,” it said.

Due to the large size of the storm and its slow movement, gusts sometimes up to hurricane force were expected through Saturday night and tropical storm-strength winds were expected to continue well into Sunday, the Bermuda government said.

Late Saturday afternoon, Michelle Pitcher, director of the Bermuda Weather Service, said wind gusts were still reaching hurricane force. “It’s still quite rough out there,” she said.

A tropical storm warning would remain in place into the night, Pitcher said.

Premier David Burt shared a video on the social media platform X thanking emergency services and encouraging residents to stay inside.

“Overnight, there will still be tropical storm force winds, and we’re asking everyone to please exercise caution,” he said. “Remain at home.”

Rodanthe, N.C.

BELCO, Bermuda’s power company, said over 23,000 customers had no power as of Saturday night.

The hurricane center reported life-threatening surf and rip currents on the East Coast of the United States and Canada. Ernesto was expected to pass near southeastern Newfoundland by Monday night, and possibly could regain hurricane strength, it said.

Lana Morris, manager of Edgehill Manor Guest House in Bermuda, said conditions were calm, though the wind has started to pick up again. “I spoke to my guests, they told me they still have electricity, they have running water, and are comfortable.”

Morris said she has been communicating with her guests via phone. “They do not have internet — but if the network is down, it’s down. They are safe and I’m happy with that.”

Bermuda is an archipelago of 181 tiny islands whose total land mass is roughly the size of Manhattan.

According to AccuWeather, it’s uncommon for the eye of a hurricane to make landfall in Bermuda. It noted that, before today, since 1850 only 11 of 130 tropical storms that came within 100 miles (160 kilometers) of Bermuda had made landfall.

The territory is a renowned offshore financial center with sturdy construction, and given its elevation, storm surge is not as problematic as it is with low-lying islands.

Ernesto previously battered the northeast Caribbean, where it left tens of thousands of people without water in Puerto Rico.

LUMA, Puerto Rico’s national power company, said it had restored more than 1.3 million customers’ electricity 72 hours after the storm’s passage.

After cleaning up and removing debris, the Virgin Islands Department of Education said all public schools would resume operations Monday.

Classes in Puerto Rico’s public schools also were scheduled to start Monday, nearly a week after their original date.

Ernesto is the fifth named storm and the third hurricane of this year’s Atlantic hurricane season.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted an above-average Atlantic hurricane season this year because of record warm ocean temperatures. It forecast 17 to 25 named storms, with four to seven major hurricanes.

'We're all in this together': Harris, Walz kick off Pennsylvania bus tour ahead of DNC

With one day to go until the start of the Democratic National Convention — and 79 days until Election Day — Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz embarked on a one-day bus tour of the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania.

What You Need To Know

Vice president kamala harris, minnesota gov. tim walz and their spouses kicked off on a one-day bus tour of pennsylvania on sunday the tour took place one day before the start of the democratic national convention in chicago on monday harris, walz, second gentleman doug emhoff and minnesota first lady gwen walz participated in a phone bank at a campaign office in rochester, pa., speaking to voters in the key battleground state both campaigns are aggressively targeting pennsylvania and its 19 electoral votes; the oft-reliable "blue wall" state flipped red for donald trump in 2016 before joe biden, a scranton native, won it back in 2020.

Harris and Walz — joined by their spouses, second gentleman Doug Emhoff and Minnesota first lady Gwen Walz — debuted new tour buses, emblazoned with “Harris-Walz” and “A New Way Forward,” in Pittsburgh, shaking hands and taking selfies with supporters at an airport hangar.

They later headed to a campaign office in Rochester, Pa., located in Beaver County — which went for Republican candidate Donald Trump by roughly 18 points in 2020 — where they participated in a phone bank, speaking to voters in the key battleground state.

“How are you doing, Hannah?” Harris said to one caller. “I am well, I am well and I’m so glad you’ve been able to take some time on a Sunday to have a conversation with me. This election — it’s, I think, the most important of our lifetime.”

"We’re all in this together," Harris added. “Seventy-nine days to go, Hannah."

As Harris spoke to the voter, Walz appeared to be delighted by what he was hearing on the call, remarking: "She's sitting right across from me, I'll pass that on."

After hanging up, he expressed that the individual he spoke to was "a nice person," adding: "She's excited."

Outside the campaign office, Harris and Walz rallied supporters and discussed the stakes of the election. Both candidates discussed a return to civility and norms of what they, apparently, hope is not a bygone era.

“This campaign, for us, is really born out of love of country,” Harris told supporters, adding: “This campaign is about a recognition, that frankly, over the last several years there’s been this kind of perversion that is taking place, I think, which is to suggest that the measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you beat down.”

“What we know, is the real and true measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you lift up,” the vice president added, to cheers. “That’s what we see as strength. We know what strength looks like. That’s what strength looks like. Anybody who is about beating down other people is a coward. This is what strength looks like.”

“We, some of us who have less hair, are old enough, can remember when you could go to Thanksgiving, watch a Steelers game with your relatives and not complain about politics the whole time, not be on each others’ neck,” Walz said. “Because you shared a commitment to democracy, a commitment to personal freedom, a commitment to public education, a commitment to infrastructure.”

“We don’t call each other names, we don’t do it,” the Minnesota governor added. “And we don’t use the least fortunate amongst us as punchlines for a joke, because they’re our neighbors.”

“You’re getting the opportunity to see the best side of America, and for the younger people here, they maybe haven’t seen a campaign like this because of COVID, because of things that’s happening, this is a chance to bring out that joy, turn the page and look to the future,” Walz added. “This idea of going forward.”

They later traveled to a Sheetz gas station and convenience store, a Pennsylvania staple, where the vice president bought a bag of Doritos, a nod to a recent fundraising email Harris sent where she recounted eating an entire family-sized bag of the flavored tortilla chips when Trump was elected in 2016. They also traveled to a firehouse in Aliquippa, where the vice president gave the fire crew treats and met the firehouse dog, a four-month-old yellow Labrador.

In Alquippa, they attended the local high school's football practice, a team with a history of producing NFL players -- including Super Bowl winners Darrelle Revis and Ty Law -- and won the state championship last year . Walz, who was a coach on a state championship football team, was in his element as he addressed the team.

"Our politics has been pretty ugly, our politics has been pretty negative," he said. "What I fear most is that young people turn away from it rather than turning into it. Politics isn’t so much different than this. It’s about something bigger than themselves. It’s about setting a future goal and trying to reach it. It’s about doing it with dignity and hard work. It’s about doing it with humility, and when you lose, you walk across the field, you shake hands with the other team and know they played hard too. We’re all in it together to try and make it better."

"We're hear in this space to say it's not just a cliche, our future is with you, and we have a responsibility to deliver it to you in good shape," he told the student-athletes.

Harris later took questions from reporters outside a Primanti Bros. restaurant -- an iconic Pennsylvania sandwich spot -- and stressed that "we need to earn everyone’s vote."

"That means being on the road, being in communities where people are, where they live," Harris said in Moon Township, outside of Pittsburgh, adding: "I'm going to be out here, with Tim, with the second gentleman, with Mrs. Walz and we're going to be working on earning every vote between now and November."

When asked about recent polling showing her up over Trump, Harris reiterated that she "very much" considers her campaign to be the "underdog." She also took questions about her economic proposals , which she unveiled in North Carolina last week.

On the $6,000 expanded Child Tax Credit for the first year of a newborn's life, Harris said that "the return on investment in terms of what that will do and what it will pay for will be tremendous," hailing what the Biden administration's efforts with that tax credit did to reduce child poverty.

And on her housing proposals, like the up to $25,000 in payment assistance: "When we increase home ownership in America, what that means in terms of increasing the tax base, not to mention property tax base, what that does to fund schools, again return on investment."

"I think it's a mistake for any person who talks about public policy to not critically evaluate how you measure return on investment," she continued. "When you are strengthening neighborhoods, stengthening communities, and in particular the economy of those communities, and investing in a broad-based economy, everybody benefits and it pays for itself in that way."

The Pennsylvania tour highlights the stakes of the race, with both candidates aggressively targeting the Keystone State and its 19 electoral votes. The oft-reliable "blue wall" state flipped red for Trump in 2016 before Joe Biden, a Scranton native, won it back in 2020.

Trump held a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, where he went back and forth between hammering Harris' economic policies and lobbing personal insults, including twice declaring he was better looking than the vice president.

Supporters told ABC News they were thrilled by Harris' candidacy, with one saying she had not felt this excited about politics in years. Some said they had never volunteered for a campaign before signing up to work on Harris'.

"I was excited about Biden, but I am a million times more excited about Kamala," Nicole Molinaro, a Pittsburgh-area mom, said. "I think that we need her leadership. We need her intelligence. We need her progressive, you know, stance. I think we need her experience. We need everything about Kamala."

Another supporter, Edward Freel, said he was unsure about Harris at first, "but then, as I started listening better and following her, [I thought] this woman is going to be good for this country."
