Ulu r u Dinner Under The Stars

If an absorbing star talk is your preference, get ready to take in an interesting session. Immerse yourself in the night sky, lit up with all those stars as a star talker unravels the mysteries that shimmer up there. Watch him decode the different constellations, planets and Zodiac signs as he points out to each of them using a laser pen.

Sounds of Silence 3

Sounds of Silence with Field of Light (A Night at Field of Light)

As you savour the scrumptious spread and sit back with your choice of drinks, be it wine or beer, tea or coffee, this is one of the highlights of the evening. Before you, the lights from 50,000 coloured glass spheres illuminate the outback and it is enlightening to hear the local expert decode the glittering spectacle up above.

And when it is time to step into the Field of Light, prepare to see up close the awe-inspiring art installation as you walk the pathways that lead you on among the rhythms and colours that spread before you. This is the kind of exhibition that can be witnessed only at Ulu r u and that gets as unique as the other local experiences like listening to a didgeridoo performance or feasting on a bush tucker spread.

The Night at the Field of Light comes to a spectacular culmination as you stand atop the dunes to marvel at the brilliance of the illuminated sight below.

This tour lasts approximately 4.5 hours and transfers are once again ensured. The cost of the package is $280/adult and $140/child.

Sounds of Silence

171 Yulara Drive, Petermann, Northern Territory

A highlight of any visit to Australia’s Red Centre, the Sounds of Silence is an unforgettable way to discover Uluru (Ayers Rock). From watching a romantic sunset over this nature's made landmark to dining beneath the desert's bright stars—it’s an outback experience like no other.

The Sounds of Silence experience begins with a sunset viewing of Uluru and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), accompanied by sparkling wine and canapes. Next, tuck into a delicious barbecue buffet dinner, while enjoying live didgeridoo and Aboriginal dance performances. The evening is capped off with a desert stargazing session.

To make the most of your time in Ayers Rock, opt to combine a Sounds of Silence dinner with a day tour of Uluru or Kata Tjuta and admire the landmarks up close. Alternatively, visit as part of a multi-day tour, including popular activities such as a sunrise Uluru viewing, a hike around Kata Tjuta and the Walpa Gorge, and a visit to Kings Canyon.

Dinner options include traditional bush tucker (native Australian foods) and meats such as crocodile, barramundi, and kangaroo. Vegetarian options are also available.

It can get chilly in the desert at night so bring warm clothing.

Sound of Silence tours are wheelchair accessible, but it’s best to make this clear at the time of booking.

The Sounds of Silence experience lasts around four hours.

The Sounds of Silence dinner takes place at a viewing area in Yulara, 11 miles (18 kilometers) north of Ayers Rock (Uluru). Tours typically include pickup and drop-off from Ayers Rock hotels.

The Sounds of Silence dinner is available year-round, but advance bookings are always recommended. The best time to visit Uluru is from May to September, when the cooler weather is more suited for hiking and sightseeing tours, but evening tours can get cold at this time of year, so be sure to wrap up warm.

The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Uluru is the star attraction and there are numerous ways to explore. Enjoy a sunrise viewing from the purpose-built observation deck, follow the scenic Uluru Base Walk, ride a camel through the desert, or take a Segway tour to the Mutitjulu Waterhole. You can even soar overhead on a helicopter tour. Another highlight of the park is the Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and visitors can admire the scenery from the Kata Tjuta Dunes viewing platform, follow the Walpa Gorge walk between the two main domes, or tackle the more challenging Valley of the Winds trail (a 3-hour circuit).

Sounds of Silence

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Northern Territory, Australia

A linen covered table at sunset

Arguably the best-known outdoor dining experience in Australia, the Sounds of Silence is an ideal way to round off a busy day exploring Uluru and Kata Tjuta. By Central Australian standards this is incredibly spiffy, with linen-covered tables, candles and silver service.

Guests arrive for drinks and canapés while watching the sunset over The Rock, then enjoy a buffet meal, didgeridoo music and a spot of stargazing.

The true majesty of the night sky is revealed in all its glory here, with billions of tiny stars wherever you look and the Milky Way prominent. After your meal, there’s a talk from the resident astronomer, who guides you through the many constellations in the southern night sky. Brilliant.

Getting there & doing it

The dinner location is a short drive from Yulara, and the price includes return transport to/from your accommodation.

Book tickets ahead of time on the Ayers Rock Resort website . Plan on about 4 hours. Food is buffet style – vegetarian options are available with prior notice. Temperatures plummet in the evening in the desert, even in warmer months – take a warm jacket and/or a wrap.

When to do it

Sounds of Silence operates all year round, seven days a week. Pick up times are seasonal, around 1 hour before sunset.

Since this is a desert region, many first-time visitors imagine that heat will be a problem. Just the reverse. Winter (June to August) nights can be bitterly cold, so guests should rug up in long trousers, jumpers and fleeces. Since this is an outdoor event high winds can also make this an uncomfortable experience, so check the weather forecast before you book. You are unlikely to be troubled by flies or mosquitos, but it’s always wise to carry insect repellent when travelling in the Australian Outback.

Time Out says

When it comes to once-in-a-lifetime meals, it’s hard to top Australia's first under-the-stars dining experience. Taking place in the middle of the Australian desert with spectacular views of Uluru (Ayers Rock) at sunset, guests will enjoy a beautiful three-course bush tucker-inspired buffet with premium Australian wines and beers. The evening becomes even more magical with a didgeridoo performance and a star talk that brings the twinkling night sky to life.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

We are going to do the Fields of Light and the Sound of Silence on the night of arrival. I need some help on how and where to go to see the sunrise by car in Uluru. Then I will join the Mala guide.. Also is it worth it to drive to Kings Canyon to see the sunrise and hike?
