Cruise Tasik Putrajaya

Time out says.

The scenic and leisurely cruises on Lake Putrajaya are a particular hit with visitors from outside Klang Valley. There are some stunning views of the city to be seen and the boats and perahus (gondolas) dotted about give the lake a lovely idyllic feel, especially as the sun sets. You can also dine on-board at night and the food is surprisingly decent. Certainly one of the most unique dining experiences around, this cruise actually manages to serve good food, making it a very enjoyable way to spend an evening, journeying around picturesque Putrajaya.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

This outstanding precinct spans 11,320 acres comprising 13 different gardens, with more than 70% of its area devoted to greenery and water. The principle landscape feature is the Putrajaya Wetland—a man-made lake. More than 50 local species of native wetland plants were cultivated in the 17-acre Putrajaya Wetland Nursery prior to planting in the wetland cells.

A city highlights drive will stop at Perdana Putra (the Prime Minister’s Office Complex) and the Putra Mosque , which incorporates Islamic architecture from Turkestan, Kazakhstan and Morocco. Other sights include the Palace of Justice and the 1,200-foot-long Seri Wawasan Bridge—a futuristic cable-stay bridge built across Putrajaya Lake and Putra Square.

Please note: Approximately 20 minutes of walking is required over relatively flat paved surfaces. There are approximately 60 steps to access the boat jetty area. Wear comfortable walking shoes; bring insect repellent.

Putrajaya Attractions: 14 Best Things To Do In Putrajaya [2024]

Going on a Putrajaya trip and want to know all the best things to do in Putrajaya? We have you covered! Below you will find our guide to all the best attractions in Putrajaya to plan your ultimate trip.

Putrajaya is a city often overlooked thanks to being so close to its big brother Kuala Lumpur, and many visitors to KL only see a glimpse of it on the motorway to and from the airport.

However, there are many places of interest in Putrajaya as well as things to do at Putrajaya that make it a great spot to visit.

Perdana Putra

Located just 25km south of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya was previously filled with plantations of rubber and oil palm. Today, it is the judicial and administrative capital of Malaysia. Putrajaya is a planned city and also dubbed an eco-city with over a third of the land reserved as greenery, making it one of the greenest cities in Asia.

Filled with stunning buildings, modern skyscrapers and manmade attractions, there are plenty of places to go in Putrajaya. Still, this is a quiet city and you won’t find many night activities in Putrajaya.

Below, you will find our Putrajaya travel blog with everything you need to know about what to do in Putrajaya as well as the best places to stay for your ultimate holiday! There is also a handy map of the best places to visit in Putrajaya Malaysia.

Top 14 Best Things To Do In Putrajaya Malaysia

Here are the best Putrajaya attractions. Read through and select the ones that fit your interests and timeframe.

Note that the things to do Putrajaya offers are more about stunning huge monuments, gorgeous gardens and interesting architecture rather than museums or other places to walk around and explore. Often, it’s more about seeing the outsides and taking some photos which is why the Putrajaya tourist attractions can be best visited on a tour.

This is the tour I took and recommend.

There is a section below which talks more about taking a tour.

What I also loved here is that the buildings were all designed by Malaysian architects and meant to represent this country. It’s really a unique place.

Putrajaya Lake

Putrajaya Lake

Putrajaya’s ambition can best be seen in one of the top places in Putrajaya, Putrajaya Lake. In our opinion, this manmade lake is the most impressive attraction in Putrajaya. This 650 hectare lake has become the centrepiece of the city with many of the impressive buildings and accommodation options located on its banks.

Believe it or not, fishing is popular activity here. There are also some beautiful gardens, jogging trails and cycling tracks.

From Marina Putrajaya, you can do a whole host of Putrajaya lake activities like stand up paddle boarding or zoom along the lake in a water jetpack.

You can also cruise the lank on a catamaran or wooden perahu (more details below).

It is also the best place in Putrajaya at night to take a walk.

Putra Mosque

Putra Mosque

From the banks of the Putrajaya Lake you can see the Putra Mosque – one of the Putrajaya places to visit.

Most of the population of Putrajaya are Muslim so the Putra Mosque is an important site in this city as well as one of the tourist attractions in Putrajaya.

This is a beautiful rose tinted mosque built for up to 15,000 worshippers at any one time. Non-Muslim visitors are permitted to visit outside of the designated prayer times.

Robes are provided on entrance if you’d like to step inside and appreciate the ornate decorations, or grab a moment of peace.

Address: Persiaran Persekutuan, Presint 1, Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya

Perdana Putra (Prime Minister’s Offices)

Perdana Putra

As the administrative capital of Malaysia, one of the Putrajaya things to do is admire the Perdana Putra, or Prime Minister’s Offices.

It’s just steps away from Putra Mosque and can be appreciated from the outside only. Built is an Islamic architectural style, this building is lovely to look at and a mixture of both eastern and western influences.

You can admire the mint green dome, the east and west wings of the building, and see Dataran Perdana where the prime minister holds ceremonies and meets with dignitaries.

The walkways and surrounding garden are also beautifully kept and landscaped.

Address: Persiaran Sultan Sallahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Presint 1, Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya

Perbadanan Putrajaya

Perbadanan Putrajaya

Perbadanan Putrajaya is another example of the architecture of this city, with an enormous archway in the centre of the building. This tourist attraction in Putrajaya makes for a great photo opportunity, celebrating the modern architecture of this city.

The area is quite beautiful too with flowers and grassy areas perfect for a picnic or lunch.

It’s directly opposite the Palace of Justice and, through the centre of it, you can see the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque coming up next!

Address: Kompleks Perbadanan Putrajaya, 24, Persiaran Perdana, Presint 3, 62675, Putrajaya

Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque

Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque

Also known as the Iron Mosque, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque is one of the most unique mosques in the world and a must see among Putrajaya attractions 2024.

This is a modern and intricately constructed building taking inspiration from the past yet obviously looking towards the future. The mosque is constructed with metal wires and lacks any minarets, making it quite a unique design. Inside is airy and spacious, adorned with calligraphy from the Quran.

The mosque sits just opposite the Palace Of Justice, and there is also a green and luscious garden.

If you enjoy cutting edge architecture, this is the best place to visit in Putrajaya.

Address: 25, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Presint 3, Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya

Istana Kehakiman (Palace Of Justice)

Istana Kehakiman (Palace Of Justice)

Just opposite the Iron Mosque sits the Palace Of Justice, another interesting place in Putrajaya.

The Palace of Justice can be appreciated from both inside and out. There is a spacious courtyard and Taj Mahal like architecture on the outside, and a museum on the inside.

If you’re interested in judicial history then the museum is one of the fun things to do in Putrajaya. You can see costumes and a stone monument known as the Batu Bersurat which lists Islamic laws and dates from 1303AD.

There’s also a justice hall of fame with biographies of Malaysia’s Chief Justices, and a mock high court. Look up and you’ll also see the decorative interior of the domes.

This is not always open to the public so check before travelling here.

Address: Persiaran Perdana, Presint 3, Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya

Taman Botani (Botanical Gardens)

Taman Botani (Botanical Gardens) Putrajaya

One of the best outdoor activities in Putrajaya is a visit to the Taman Botani. This is an excellent botanical gardens to visit with over 700 species of plants including many native to the region. There’s also beautiful trees, plenty of grassy areas suitable for a picnic, and a canopy bridge to walk over.

You can explore by hiring a bike at a reasonable price or walking around. Another way to explore is via a tram ride (which is more like a bus).

This is the best thing to do in Putrajaya if you’re looking for a peaceful setting. It is rarely crowded. Note, however, it’s best to bring food and drinks with you as there are limited options available for purchase.

If you’re looking for places to visit in Putrajaya at night, the Taman Botani is open until 7pm.

However, note that currently, there is some development happening in these gardens and it’s not at its best.

Address: Lebuh Perdana Barat, Presint 1, Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya

Views From The Putrajaya International Convention Centre

Views over Putrajaya from Putrajaya International Convention Centre

An easy place to visit is the outside of the Putrajaya International Convention Centre where you can find views back over Putrajaya.

It only takes a moment to take a look and snap some great photos, and you’ll be glad you did.

Taman Wetlands

Another Putrajaya interesting place among this city’s unique attractions is the Taman Wetlands. What makes it so cool is its close proximity to the city – it’s less than 2km away.

This area is actually a man-made wetlands which has become an important ecosystem and home to around 100 species of birds. Plenty of other animals including mammals, reptiles and insects have also made this wetlands their home.

There are plenty of Putrajaya outdoor activities you can do here like jogging, cycling, picnicking and exploring gardens like the bamboo garden. There’s also a playground for kids.

It’s open until 7pm so a walk here can be one of the things to do in Putrajaya at night.

Address: Presint 13, Putrajaya

Putra Bridge

Putra Bridge

One can not write a Putrajaya what to do list without mentioning the Putra Bridge. This bridge is huge and a stunning piece of architecture.

From the bridge you can get great views of the lake, the Putra Mosque and the Prime Minister’s Office. The bridge also leads to another nice place to visit in Putrajaya, Putra Square.

Putra Bridge is also a Putrajaya night attraction with night time being the best time to snap a photo.

Address: Presint 2, Putrajaya, Selangor

River Cruise

Putrajaya river cruise

From Marina Putrajaya there are a range of cruises you can do including a sightseeing cruise, a dining cruise and a more traditional wooden boat cruise similar to a gondola. There are also larger capacity, modern and airconditioned boats.

This is a great way to see and appreciate Putrajaya from it’s unique man-made lake – itself the Putrajaya best place to visit.

While a cruise itself is one of the activities to do in Putrajaya, they can also take you to many of the things to see in Putrajaya.

I highly recommend it.

You can do this as part of the half day tour from KL that I took and recommend here.

District 21

District 21 KL

District 21 is located in the IOI City Mall, itself a large mall and the best place at Putrajaya for shopping.

This is the best place to go in Putrajaya for adrenaline junkies, and a visit is certainly one of the most interesting things to do in Putrajaya for kids.

There’s a whole host of attractions here involving sliding, jumping, climbing and more.

It’s themed as a post-apocalyptic world with activities for both kids and adults. There’s a maze, climbing wall and much more. A great way to spend half a day!

Address: AT 6, IOI City Mall, IOI Resort City, Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya

Sunway Lagoon

Sunway Lagoon

If you’re looking beyond your Putrajaya to do list, consider a visit to Sunway Lagoon. This is an awesome outdoor theme park with seven different sections and a huge range of waterslides, rides and a whole host of other attractions.

Parks include the Sunway Lost Lagoon and Water Park complete with a man-made surf beach, erupting volcanos, many water slides and more. There’s also Wildlife Park zoo, X Park with go-carts, climbing walls and bungee jumping, Scream Park complete with thrilling (or terrifying) rides and an Amusement Park.

There is a great deal of variety and something to suit everyone, but particularly kids. It makes for an excellent day out and is located about a 40 minute drive away from Putrajaya.

Kuala Lumpur

Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is very easy to visit if you’re based in Putrajaya. The best way to get there is to hop on a train from Putrajaya & Cyberjaya and head to KL Sentral station. The trip just takes 20 minutes and is inexpensive.

Alternatively, a taxi ride from Putrajaya to KL will take about 40 minutes.

In KL, you can see all the main sites like the Petronas Towers, Merdeka Square, KLCC Park as well enjoy all the shopping, food, museums and markets that make KL such a popular destination.

Click here for more ideas of things to do in KL.

Putrajaya Attractions On A Tour

Looking towards Palace Of Justice through Perbadanan Putrajaya

While it’s possible to get to Putrajaya by train and there are electric buses and bikes around town, traveling around still isn’t super easy.

To make the most of the things to do around Putrajaya, I recommend a tour. This way all the transport and attractions are taken care of for you.

I personally took this tour on Klook . It was a super easy way to enjoy all the interesting places in Putrajaya in an easy format. I highly recommend it.

Best Place To Stay In Putrajaya

When it comes to where to stay in Putrajaya, there is a great range of hotels and some of the best value 5-star hotels I have seen anywhere. No matter what your budget, your holiday style or who you are travelling with, you’ll easily find a great place to stay.

Below I’ve listed a few different places to consider including a budget, mid-range and more luxurious option.

BEST – DoubleTree by Hilton Putrajaya Lakeside Review

putrajaya cruise dining

If you want 5 star luxury, I recommend staying at the DoubleTree by Hilton. This is an awesome resort and in keeping with Putrajaya’s reputation as a green city as there are 4 acres of gardens here.

This resort is also great for families with kids as there’s a playground and two kids pools.

Accommodation options include standard rooms, deluxe rooms, executive rooms and suites including two bedroom options sleeping up to 9 guests. There’s really an option for everyone.

The resort offers free WiFi throughout, there is a spa and a fitness centre, an infinity pool and five dining options including a bar. Marina Putrajaya is only a short walk away.

MID-RANGE –  The Everly Putrajaya Hotel Review

putrajaya cruise dining

The Everly Putrajaya Hotel is a modern hotel offering spacious, comfortable and affordable rooms. This hotel also offers free parking for guests that are driving.

Room options include deluxe rooms, superior rooms and suites. Each room offers free WiFi, a kettle, air-conditioning, a safe and TV. It’s also possible to request an extra bed if needed.

The hotel has one restaurant onsite, Fuze Restaurant, which offers lunch and dinner, as well as the Nuevo Cafe. There’s also a fitness centre, currency exchange and 24 hour reception.

Both Alamanda Shopping Centre and Putrajaya Lake are a short walk away.

BUDGET – OYO 707 Ayuni Hotel Review

putrajaya cruise dining

For budget friendly accommodation, OYO 707 Ayuni Hotel is our top pick.

This hotel offers both standard and superior rooms, either with twin beds or a queen/king bed. Rooms are simple with a private bathroom, TV and sitting area.

The property is located far from Putrajaya’s attractions and is best if you need to be based in Bangi. This is simple accommodation with a 24 hour front desk and free WiFi throughout.

Kuala Lumpur is also not far away. You can see our top picks for accommodation in KL here.

How To Get To Putrajaya

Putrajaya stop on the KLIA train between KLIA and KL Sentral

It’s easy to get to Putrajaya from Kuala Lumpur by car, taxi or public transport. It is just a 40 minute drive from KLCC or you can take a train in just 18 minutes from KL Sentral.

It’s also easy to get here from the airport or elsewhere in Malaysia.

Putrajaya With Kids

Like most places in Malaysia, kids and families are made to feel welcome in Putrajaya.

Having said that, when it comes to what to do in Putrajaya Malaysia with kids, beyond District 21, there are not many places to see in Putrajaya that will interest kids. A visit here mostly involves looking at cool buildings and walking around. There are a couple of playgrounds, but not much more to offer kids for any longer than a day trip.

There are places to visit near Putrajaya like Sunway Lagoon, and of course Kuala Lumpur, that have lots more to offer.

Putrajaya

Final Words

Whichever way you look at it, there’s no denying that Putrajaya is an interesting place to visit! It is modern, luscious, yet can be eerily quiet!

There are enough interesting places to visit in Putrajaya for a day trip, and it’s also a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of much bigger Kuala Lumpur.

Even if you only do a Putrajaya 1 day trip, I recommend you visit to this unique city.

Click here for more information on a tour I took to visit here and recommend . It visits many of the places above.

Read more guides to nearby Kuala Lumpur here or nearby Sunway Lagoon here . You can find all our Putrajaya guides here.

12 dining mistakes you must fix on your next cruise

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Some cruisers might think there is no such thing as a “dining mistake” on a cruise. A vacation at sea can be akin to a feeding frenzy, with 24/7 dining options and all the pizza, ice cream and burgers you can eat. How could you go wrong with so many food choices?

However, if you actually care to have sit-down meals at the times you prefer in the restaurant of your choice and if you want to make the most of the dining opportunities provided on the ship, there are better and worse ways to approach your vacation.

A lack of planning can lead to your being dissatisfied with the onboard culinary experience – even though your tummy is full (or possibly, overly full) of food.

I prefer to treat cruises as a week of wonderful eating — like I would a visit to a city known for its culinary offerings — rather than an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord. To optimize the experience, I avoid these 12 dining mistakes whenever possible. If you want to taste all the best things on your next cruise without ever feeling hungry or grossly full, I suggest you fix your culinary strategic errors, as well.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Not making reservations as far in advance as possible

Cruise lines make a big deal of their multiple onboard restaurants. They neglect to mention that, like the hot new eatery in your hometown, it can be nearly impossible to get a table for four at 7 p.m. on a Saturday night — or at any reasonable dining time on any day of your sailing.

Spontaneity is nice on vacation. However, when it comes to onboard dining in specialty restaurants, a lack of advance planning will leave you dining too early, too late or not at all. If you want that perfect reservation, you’ll need to secure a table in advance.

Ideally, you will make your specialty dining reservations online before you set sail. On some ships, suite passengers get early access to the best times. Make your dinner plans as soon as you’re able. If not, make it a priority to book a table as soon as you’re on the ship.

For restaurants that don’t take advance reservations, you’ll need to strategize your evening. For example, on a recent Carnival Celebration cruise, guests needed to request a table through the line’s app if they wanted to dine at included venues, such as Chibang! or Cucina del Capitano. However, if you waited to request a table until you were ready to eat, you might have found yourself, as we did, with an hourlong wait.

If you’re able, you should put your name on a list or request a table 30 to 60 minutes in advance of when you wish to sit down, knowing you might end up eating earlier than you intended.

Missing the mid-cruise specials

On the other hand, if certain restaurants aren’t driving enough business, cruise lines will run promotions mid-cruise to entice more diners into the emptier venues. Or, the ship might run lunch or brunch specials in restaurants normally open only for dinner.

I noticed this on MSC Cruises’ MSC Seashore . Certain nights were designated all-you-can-eat sushi nights for a flat fee at the Kaito Sushi Bar. The Butcher’s Cut Steakhouse offered brunch on a sea day for less than its typical surcharge. If you’re interested in a nicer meal in an intimate setting for the right price, don’t forget to look for the mid-cruise specials printed in the daily newsletter.

Eating in the main dining room on the first night

It’s tradition for many cruisers to eat in the main dining room on the first night of the cruise. You’re still getting the lay of the land, and if you’ve selected assigned-seating dining, you’re eager to meet your waiters. Also, some avid cruisers remember a time when the best dishes, such as lobster, were served on the first night and don’t want to miss them – even though the cruise lines now often save their best dishes for formal night.

Because of this mindset, reservations can be easier to get in specialty restaurants on the first night of the cruise. Some lines even offer incentives if you book a table on the eve of embarkation. Carnival , for example, offers a free bottle of house wine or 50% off the regular wine list to cruisers who choose to dine in certain extra-fee restaurants on night one.

Don’t miss out on the food and possibly a freebie by not considering a specialty restaurant for your first dinner on board.

Always eating as a family

You often see the multigenerational family cruise advice that everyone can do their own thing during the day and then come together at dinner and spend the evening as a family. This is great advice for families with teens and older children, but it’s not always ideal for little kids.

When I cruise with my children, I find our dining choices to be vastly different. My son has no use for a leisurely sit-down meal in a waiter-served restaurant. He wants to go to the buffet, grab food, eat and be done.

My picky eater daughter has no interest in a seafood restaurant, nor do I want to pay specialty dining fees for her to take two bites and declare she’s finished. (Know that many specialty restaurants will serve the regular kid’s menu of pizza and chicken tenders and not charge your children to dine.)

So on some nights, my husband and I will take the kids early to the buffet or a fast-casual restaurant before depositing them in the kids club, at which point we are free to enjoy a date night in the main dining room or in an upscale steakhouse or French restaurant on board. And everyone is happy. (I’ve even ordered room service for the kids on lines like Holland America that don’t charge.)

Forgetting about free room service breakfast

So many cruise lines have added delivery fees or a la carte pricing to their room service menus that budget-conscious cruisers have stopped considering in-room dining as an option. So it’s easy to forget that most lines have not yet slapped a price tag on Continental breakfast.

The options might not be vast, but sometimes you just want to sip a coffee and munch on some fruit or a croissant out on the balcony while you watch the sunrise. You’re always welcome to grab a more filling meal elsewhere on the ship later.

Room service is great for appeasing kids with cheerios and muffins while everyone gets ready to go up to the buffet. You can also order little boxes of cereal to keep on hand as afternoon snacks.

Sticking to the menu

Cruise ships don’t really have a secret menu like In-N-Out Burger, but sometimes galley staff can indulge you in a little creativity.

Luxury lines encourage it. Seabourn volunteered to cook my friends and me a vegetarian Indian feast, and SeaDream kept a secret stash of chocolate-chili ice cream that I could request whenever I wanted. That doesn’t mean mainstream cruise lines are hard-liners when it comes to the set menu, though.

Nearly every cruise ship I’ve sailed offers a veggie burger wherever regular burgers are found, including at private island barbecues, but you’ll hardly ever see one listed on a menu. I often ask for a side of roasted broccoli in the main dining room. The Carnival Pride staff got that one spot on, but the MSC Seashore folks delivered some sad steamed veggies I never ordered again.

Related: What not to eat on a cruise

At Royal Caribbean’s Sorrento’s pizzeria , you can request vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free pizza, even if you don’t see those choices listed on a menu.

And in the main dining room, you can always order appetizers as entrees, entrees as appetizers and get a scoop of ice cream on whatever dessert you like.

Skipping the extra-fee venues

I’m sympathetic to cruisers on a budget, as I’m often one of them. We all have to make choices about where and how we spend our vacation dollars.

Please do budget some money, if you can, to try a few of the extra-fee restaurants on cruise ships. They add variety to your onboard dining, and many offer great value for the money compared to land-based restaurants. The ambience is quieter and more intimate than in the main dining room, which can be loud and overwhelming, depending on your table.

Additionally, the food can be outstanding. I’m a fan of both Jamie’s Italian and Giovanni’s Table on Royal Caribbean , the steakhouse on Carnival, the Pinnacle Grill on Holland America and the Eden Restaurant on Celebrity Cruises .

Some extra-charge dining experiences, like teppanyaki venues and churrascarias on various cruise lines, can be more fun than the typical sit-down restaurant. You don’t have to be a foodie to get a lot of satisfaction from specialty restaurants.

Not trying new foods

Cruise ships have all your foodie favorites, whether they be juicy steaks, cheesy pizza or freshly rolled sushi. It’s easy to indulge in feel-good food, but when meals are included, I’d encourage you to live a little dangerously.

A cruise is a perfect opportunity to try something new because you can ask for something else if you don’t like it. If you haven’t ordered a ridiculous amount of food already, you can get a second entree or dessert for no extra charge. Try buttery escargot or your first baked Alaska ; Carnival routinely has frog legs and alligator fritters on the menu.

If you’re worried about food waste, order one dish for your table to share. If you love it, you can always order another.

Eating too early or too late

This dining mistake is not always something you can control. If you want set-seating dining, you’re often looking at a 5:30 p.m. or 8 p.m. dinner time, when 6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. would be preferable. My problem is an early dinner leads me to go on a snacking spree before bed, when pretty much only pizza and ice cream are available. A late dinner has me hunting for food at 5 p.m. and ending up with a pre-dinner burger.

One way around this is to select a cruise ship’s anytime dining plan and figure out how to work the system to get the dining time you want. This might involve agreeing to share a table with strangers, making reservations or requesting a table at least a half-hour before you want to eat.

As I said earlier, making reservations for specialty restaurants as early as possible is the best way to ensure better dining times. Alternatively, if you’re flexible, simply go where the waits are shortest. Norwegian Cruise Line ships often have real-time displays indicating which dining venues have shorter or longer wait times for tables. Of course, the buffet and other fast-casual venues will have you eating in a jiffy.

Not hoarding snacks

You might be thinking, “But Erica, there is food everywhere on a cruise ship. Why would I hoard snacks?”

The truth is, while food is plentiful at 4 p.m. on a cruise ship, it’s not always the food I want to eat at that time. At home, I eat fruit, baby carrots or granola bars mid-afternoon.

While I wholeheartedly agree that a cruise is not the right time to diet, I also find that some days I can’t stomach another cookie or slice of pizza, which is what’s available between meals on board. Sometimes all I want is a simple yogurt or a bowl of grapes in the afternoon when they are nowhere to be found.

My solution: Case the breakfast buffet for healthy items and store them in your cabin’s minifridge for mid-afternoon snacking. Fruit, yogurt, muffins, hard-boiled eggs and small boxes of cereal all work to satisfy those late-day cravings without resorting to something straight from the fryer.

Or, make a PB&J at breakfast to eat later in the day. It’s an especially good strategy when you’re traveling with small children.

Wasting food

When you’re at sea, you should strike a balance between trying new things and wasting food. Food waste is a huge issue on cruise ships. The number of half-eaten room service dinners and pizza crusts I saw on my last cruise was appalling (especially since the pizza was so good).

Take small portions at the buffet, where you know you’re going to want to try a few different dishes. Pick one dessert to try, and then go back for seconds, rather than piling your plate high with all the choices. Have everyone at your table choose their own desserts rather than bringing back a pile of cookies for the table that no one actually eats.

Related: 9 best cruise ship desserts to tempt you at sea

Ask for one slice of pizza instead of two, and handle the soft-serve machine gently so you don’t end up with a towering cone you can’t finish. Don’t order room service breakfast for your friends as a prank, and don’t be afraid to say no to unwanted fries. Ask for smaller portions if you don’t eat a lot (though sometimes you can’t convince your waiter to bring you one), or share a dish with a friend.

That way, when you do genuinely want to try something and end up not liking it, you don’t feel as bad ordering a replacement dish you truly intend to eat.

Not pacing yourself

As I mentioned earlier, a cruise can be a nonstop smorgasbord if you let it. While it’s fun to give in to your guilty culinary pleasures for a day or two, a week of constant eating and fried, sugary, high-fat foods can make you feel ill.

Remember: It’s not a competition or about getting maximum value by eating all the included food offerings. It’s OK — dare I say, encouraged — to pace yourself. Don’t pick up that cookie just because it’s there. Don’t eat pizza every single day. Actively seek out a — gasp — salad to balance out the giant steak you’re eating.

Showing a little restraint will keep you from feeling bloated and gross by day four of your sailing. More importantly, it will also make the food indulgences you choose more special because you can truly appreciate those delicious meals.

Bottom line

It’s difficult to go hungry on a cruise ship, especially if you’re willing to pay for food, but it is possible to leave a meal feeling dissatisfied. No one wants that on their vacation.

A little forethought and some self-restraint go a long way toward making your onboard culinary experience memorable and enjoyable.

When you fix your cruise ship dining mistakes, you can avoid some of the frustrations surrounding access to the best restaurants and the mealtime ambience you prefer. If you can make it through a week on board without overeating or feeling hungry waiting for mealtimes, you’ll know you’ve mastered the art of cruise ship dining.

The pool even has ladies only sessions to accommodate for those who would appreciate a little privacy.

Sun princess: the best dining, amenities and more on princess cruises' newest ship.

Sun Princess features an updated layout, delicious new restaurants and plenty of spaces to be entertained.

Sun Princess Review

Key Takeaways

  • Sun Princess' fresher, more modern design may appeal to a younger crowd than the line normally caters to.
  • Incredible dining options abound, including The Catch by Rudi and the new Spellbound dinner and magic show.
  • New Cabana Mini-Suites feature indoor-outdoor cabana areas and spacious balconies.

As a travel writer who cruises with all the major lines, I was excited to travel through the Mediterranean on the new Sun Princess cruise ship in May 2024. I traveled with my mother to celebrate her 76th birthday shortly after the new ship's February debut in Rome . The itinerary we sailed was a unique, one-way offering that departed from Athens, Greece , with visits to ports like Bar, Montenegro; Corfu, Greece; and Messina and Naples, Italy .

A true marvel of modern engineering and ship architecture, Sun Princess boasts a maximum guest capacity of 4,300 and room for 1,600 crew. The Sphere-Class vessel is 1,133 feet long and 200 feet high, with a breadth of 139 feet and 21 total decks. There are 2,157 staterooms, including 80 unique suites with extra space for guests.

Standout features include a three-floor main dining area, the Princess Arena with capacity for 990 guests and a 250-person entertainment space known as The Dome. Read on to learn everything there is to know about the Sun Princess cruise ship, including my own take on the dining and entertainment options available to cruisers.

Sun Princess itineraries for 2024 and 2025

Sun Princess.

Holly Johnson

While Sun Princess is scheduled to cruise the Mediterranean through September 2024, the ship will cross the Atlantic on its way to Fort Lauderdale, Florida , by October for the winter cruise season.

From this new homeport, Sun Princess will offer seven-day Caribbean cruises with the stops in Honduras, Belize , Mexico, the Bahamas , the Dominican Republic, and Turks & Caicos through March 2025.

Sun Princess will then embark on a 14-day Spanish Passage voyage in March 2025, which ends in Barcelona, Spain , and repositions the ship for its summer in the Mediterranean. At that point, cruisers can book a range of lengthy Mediterranean options over various dates, which include stops in Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Italy, France, Spain and more.

Who should sail on Sun Princess?

Sun Princess.

While most people may think of Princess Cruises as a cruise line for baby boomers, Sun Princess aims to attract a younger, livelier crowd. This is immediately apparent when walking around the ship's common areas; Sun Princess boasts bold color schemes, endless windows, sparkling lights and a more modern central piazza than other Princess ships.

While my Mediterranean sailing largely consisted of adult travelers, Sun Princess will likely attract more families on its Caribbean itineraries. The ship's layout is ideal for parents with children of all ages, and amenities geared specifically toward kids abound. It all starts with the ship's Park19 family area, which features a huge climbing structure, a splash zone, a recreational court, a jogging court and more. Sun Princess also has three dedicated youth clubs: Firefly Park Kids Club (ages 3 to 7, with a separate play area for babies and toddlers 6 months and older), Neon Grove Tweens Club (ages 8 to 12) and The Underground Teen Lounge (ages 13 to 17).

What's interesting about Sun Princess is that it still has so much to offer more mature travelers, including couples who want to enjoy a romantic, upscale vacation. This is shown in the ship's elevated dining venues, expansive casino and luxurious spa. Sun Princess also offers the Sanctuary Collection of rooms and suites, which offer more amenities and spaces to relax on the ship.

Travelers who book a room in the Sanctuary Collection get their pick of a nicer selection of rooms, a premium beverage package, access to a private restaurant and pool deck and a more personalized experience overall. Think of the Sanctuary Collection suites as an alternative to MSC Cruises Yacht Club cabins – the biggest difference being that the venues available to cruisers in these cabins are spread throughout the ship.

The stateroom

Sun Princess.

I stayed in one of the new Cabana Mini-Suites on the Sun Princess, which I would book again in a heartbeat. These rooms are a take on the classic balcony cabin most cruisers expect, but with a twist. In addition to an outdoor balcony, Cabana Mini-Suites have a separate indoor-outdoor cabana-like area with a flat-screen television.

This extra space means the new Cabana Mini-Suites are much longer from one end to the other than a traditional balcony stateroom. The additional space is nice to have whether you want more room for storage or a separate place to read or relax while your cabinmate naps. My mom sat in our cabana area and read several times while I showered and got ready for dinner, and she even took a nap out there while I worked on my computer in our stateroom.

Regardless of the stateroom you book, know that Sun Princess cabins feature soft, neutral tones and plenty of closet space. Power outlets are abundant, and there are all kinds of nooks and crannies for storage. Cabin types on Sun Princess include the following:

Interior Cabins (136 to 145 square feet)

Basic interior rooms offer a queen bed or two small twin beds, a flat-panel television, a refrigerator, and a private bathroom with a shower. These are the most affordable cabins on the ship, and they work best for guests who just want a place to relax and sleep.

Premium Oceanview (212 square feet)

Ocean-view cabins have slightly more space than interior rooms, but they still lack a balcony. These rooms feature a queen bed or two twin configurations, a large flat-screen television, a refrigerator, and more floor and storage space.

Deluxe Balcony (235 square feet, including balcony)

Balcony cabins offer more space than ocean-view rooms due to the addition of a spacious balcony with outdoor seating. Balcony cabins can also come in a queen bed or two twin configuration and have a large flat-screen television, a refrigerator, and more floor and storage space.

Mini-Suite (303 square feet, including balcony)

Mini-Suites are essentially large balcony cabins with more storage space, more closet space and more floor space. These rooms have all the amenities of other cabins but include two flat-screen televisions (one for the bedroom area and another for couch viewing).

Cabana Mini-Suite (329 square feet, including balcony and cabana)

The Cabana Mini-Suite on the Sun Princess.

These rooms add the indoor-outdoor space of the cabana adjacent to the outdoor balcony. The cabana area has seating for several people and its own flat-screen television (in addition to the in-room TV).

Signature Suites (304 to 636 square feet, including balcony)

Signature Suites range in size and include larger balconies with premium furniture, two flat-screen televisions, a more spacious bathroom with a separate tub and shower, and dedicated sleeping and living areas.

Signature Sky Suites (1,262 square feet, including balcony)

Princess Cruises Signature Sky Suites are the largest staterooms across all Princess vessels, and they have all the bells and whistles you can imagine. Standout features of Sky Suites include separate living and dining areas; huge, luxurious bathrooms; and Nespresso coffee machines.

(Note: Sanctuary Collection rooms are dotted throughout the ship and consist of balcony-, mini-suite- and suite-category accommodations.)

Best amenities on Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

Since my itinerary on the Sun Princess cruise ship included multiple port stops, I didn't get to experience everything the ship had to offer. However, what I did experience was worth it – from the nonstop entertainment in the piazza to over-the-top dining features. Some of my standout experiences include:

Part dinner and part magic show, Spellbound by Magic Castle is bookable for an additional charge. The experience begins with a small group dinner with drink pairings, then moves to a hidden bar area of the ship, where the magic begins. The bar itself features magical artifacts and vintage curiosities, a "ghost" pianist, and an incredible drink menu designed to wow and delight guests. Some drinks were served in cages, golden owls and elaborate chests with dry ice.

Magic came in the form of intriguing card tricks and disappearing acts at the bar, plus a separate stage area where crowd participation helped facilitate the illusions. I don't want to give anything more than that away – you must simply experience it for yourself. Though I thought Spellbound was slightly cheesy at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the dinner and show and feel it was worth the added cost.

The Dome on the Sun Princess is part pool area and part stage. Guests can swim in a unique indoor-outdoor pool by day and watch entertainers dance in the evening, with alluring lighting effects and a cozy, intimate atmosphere.

I watched an acrobatics show in The Dome from the comfort of a padded lounge chair and thought the venue was the place to be.

Princess Arena

The Princess Arena is a circular stage area that holds up to 990 guests. Shows on offer include multifaceted stage productions and acrobatic features with plenty of surprises.

Fitness center

The Sun Princess' fitness center was huge and featured a range of treadmills, stair climbers, weights and machines to choose from. I never had trouble securing a treadmill at any time, even though I've had to wait and fight crowds for machines on other cruise ships.

I also loved the expansive walking track on the ship, which was constantly in use by both serious exercisers and cruisers walking leisurely to enjoy the views. I used the walking track every morning for at least an hour; I found it much more spacious and usable than other ship walking tracks, which are often congested and never quite wide enough.

The ship also features a Fitness Studio with guided classes, but I did not use it during my trip.

Sun Princess features five large pools and nine hot tubs. There are two pools on the lido deck, plus an indoor-outdoor pool in The Dome, a Sanctuary pool (for Sanctuary Collection guests only) and a wake-view infinity pool.

Medallion services

Princess MedallionClass is one of the coolest and most convenient amenities at sea. In place of a traditional cruise card, Princess gives you a small wearable device to bring with you around the ship and on shore. The medallion tracks your physical location on the ship, which allows you to order services and deliveries on board no matter where you are. Medallion delivery options range from food and drinks to extra pillows or bottled water.

I ordered room service through my medallion multiple times and hot, fresh food arrived in my cabin in less than 20 minutes. Meanwhile, drinks were delivered to our cabin and elsewhere on the ship in less than five minutes.

MedallionNet

Princess' Wi-Fi at sea (MedallionNet) is the fastest internet service I have ever used on a cruise ship. The internet was fast and reliable enough for me to complete some work while on board, which is not the norm on cruise ships.

Best dining venues Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

Sun Princess features 30 dining and bar options, many of which are included in the base cruise fare. Complimentary dining venues on Sun Princess include three traditional dining rooms, The Eatery (a take on the classic buffet, but with staff service), a café for coffee and light bites, The Lido (serving up salads, pizza and more) and the Promenade Dining grill.

Specialty dining options for an extra charge range from O'Malley's Irish Pub to a sushi spot to steak, seafood and Italian restaurants. For an extra special experience, head to Love by Britto to indulge in fine dining, or opt for Umai hot pot or teppanyaki venues. Meanwhile, bars on Sun Princess include Bellini's Cocktail Bar, Sea View Bar, The MIX and more.

My personal favorite dining experiences included:

My Spellbound dinner was excellent, even though the menu is fairly brief. I enjoyed a delicious shrimp cocktail and seafood entree, followed by a vegan dessert (I'm allergic to dairy and the ship happily accommodated). What stood out for me with Spellbound, at least food-wise, was the eclectic selection of drink pairings offered with the meal. It started with a caprese salad cocktail that tasted like tomatoes and balsamic vinegar in a strange, delicious way, then moved on to the spooky concoctions offered in the Spellbound bar.

Crown Grill

Crown Grill, a specialty dining venue, is not unique to Sun Princess, but it is the cruise line's most popular steakhouse brand. My mom and I had a delicious meal here for her birthday that included a Mediterranean-style spiny lobster cake, Chilean sea bass and a huge (surprise) birthday cake delivered to our table.

The Catch by Rudi

The Catch by Rudi is the ship's specialty dining seafood restaurant. Here, I dined on a delicious shrimp cocktail and the catch of the day (a grilled dorado filet). Everything was fresh and the meal was exceptional from start to finish.

I loved The Eatery, the ship's buffet-style dining option. The main difference between this venue and more traditional cruise ship buffets is that you're served by staff instead of serving yourself, which I prefer. The Eatery featured a rotating selection of exceptional main courses (seafood, chicken, beef and ethnic options), salads, appetizers and delicious desserts. It even had a vegan section and an easy-to-find selection of gluten-free offerings.

Best excursions on Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

The best excursions on Sun Princess vary depending on where you're going on your cruise – the Caribbean or various Europe destinations. Here's an overview of some excellent excursions offered aboard Sun Princess, a few of which I did myself.

Corfu, Greece

Catamaran Coastal Cruise & Swim: This easy excursion lets you see Corfu from the sea and get out into the water for some snorkeling and swimming. I picked this excursion so we could relax for one day and avoid a lot of walking, and it delivered. A delicious lunch with an open bar was served on board as we sailed around the island taking in some of Corfu's most beautiful sights.

Naples, Italy

Sorrento & Amalfi Coast Cruise: No trip to this region of Italy is complete without a stop in the Amalfi Coast . This excursion was a long one (eight to nine hours) with lots of walking and bus time, but the views of this dynamic coast and time spent in Amalfi and Sorrento made the travel time well worth it.

Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos

Island Vibes & Beach Swim: This relatively short excursion includes a narrated bus trip throughout the island of Grand Turk, highlighting some of the island's top sights. A beach break at picturesque Governor's Beach is included.

Princess Cays, Bahamas

Princess Cays Coastal Cruise: Princess Cruises' private island offers a range of bookable activities, from banana boat rides to snorkeling tours. This coastal cruise is another option that takes you along the shores of Eleuthera in a 40-foot Reef Princess boat.

Overall impressions of Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

If you're considering a cruise on Sun Princess, you should know that this isn't your traditional Princess ship. The look and feel of this vessel are younger and livelier compared to other Princess ships I have sailed on. Gone are the hallways filled with cruisers knitting and playing cards; in their place, you'll find dancing, entertainment, music and activities around the clock.

When it comes to Sun Princess dining, every meal I had on board was either very good or excellent. You don't even have to opt for an extra-cost specialty dining venue to get a good meal. The Eatery and the regular dining rooms feature fresh, seasonal foods that are more than enough for the average palate to enjoy.

Caribbean itineraries on offer later this year (and into 2025) start at around $660 per person for an interior cabin, and Princess features an endless roster of sales throughout the year. If you're looking for a new cruising experience and want to give Princess a try (or another chance), Sun Princess is more than worthy of your consideration.
