How to Book Cheap Flights?

  • Fly during the working week Opting to take your flight during the working week can save you money. Flights departing over this period – especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays – are cheaper, mainly because these days are less popular to travel on.
  • Have a look at airline websites Many airline websites have made it simpler to identify the inexpensive days to fly by displaying a "calendar view" booking system. This system allows you to scan prices ranging across the week that you are searching.
  • Consider flights with less-popular departure times You may also get a bargain flight if you're willing to fly at an early hour. It may well be less expensive to fly at 6 am than at later times due to that time spot being less popular. The only problem you could face is getting to the airport at this time; make sure that public transport is running if you can't take a taxi or get a lift to the airport.
  • Find a better price on the Trip.com app This may sound like I'm stating the obvious, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who settle for a price without first shopping around and doing some research. We suggest you have a look for bargains on the Trip.com app.
  • Book early instead of waiting until the last minute Don't get fooled into thinking that last-minute deals are necessarily the best option for cheap flight tickets because they seldom are. The smart move is to book early, even as far as a year in advance if that is possible for the flight you require. Flight tickets have a tendency to be cheaper when they are first released – which is normally about a year before the flight – so have a look online as soon as the flights you want are available. This is particularly true if you are planning to travel during school holidays or to a destination where a famous event is taking place. These prices will increase rapidly, so book before the masses do. The price of a flight may drop again before re-climbing in the last few days before the flight takes off but they also may not. It's not worth the risk of waiting for a drop in prices only to be faced with higher prices for leaving it until the last minute. You also run the risk that the tickets will become sold out before you book yours, especially if it's a popular flight. If you're willing to be flexible, which is really the name of the game for cheap flight tickets, then have a look at a flight search engine as it may post flight tickets which get lower in price as the flight time approaches.
  • Use a credit card in a wiser way There are a lot of advantages to paying for a flight with a credit card. One advantage is that you are protected when you make bigger purchases. For example, if you spend more than $100 on a flight, you will be covered for a refund if the airline or travel company goes out of business. This will not necessarily be the case if you pay with a debit card so check first. Credit cards are also more useful for spending in a foreign country and give you better exchange rates than you would get with your debit card. Certain credit cards will offer you air miles for each sum of money spent, thus saving you a bit more on your flight tickets. They may also give you a certain amount of cashback on the purchase of your flight ticket.
  • Choose flights with a connection Booking a flight with a connection is nearly always a cheaper option, especially on longer-haul flights. The best thing to do is to uncheck the "non-stop only" option on your flight booking website's search engine, and have a look to see if the flights shown are any cheaper. However, there is a degree of risk involved in this method of getting cheap air tickets. If one of your earlier flights is delayed, this could mean that you miss a later connecting flight.
  • Book package holidays which may offer cheap flight tickets If you book a package holiday, you are likely to get discounts on flights as well as accommodation. This is because travel companies book tickets in such large volumes that they get huge discounts. It is sometimes possible to get a whole holiday for less than the price of a regular flight.
  • Be aware of hidden costs of cheap flights Be aware that cheap flight tickets with budget airlines can be deceptive. Very often there can be hidden costs, so check for air taxes, baggage fees, or seat selection costs before you buy. Airlines can also add travel insurance and other features on automatically without checking to see if you want them first. Travel light if it's possible. Carry-on baggage is usually free, but be sure to check the regulations on weight limitations first.

How to find cheap flights, what is the best day to buy a plane ticket.

This just in! Airfares offered on Thursdays tend to be the cheapest, according to flight demand on Travelocity in 2021. Tuesday and Wednesday prices are also good, but you may want to prepare your budget if booking during the weekend, as data shows that is when prices are generally at their highest.

What are the cheapest days to fly?

Frequent travelers may already know this, but earlier in the week can be the cheapest time to fly. In 2021, flights departing on a Monday were generally the cheapest of the week, whereas you may pay a premium for weekend flights when demand is usually high. On average, tickets were most expensive for Saturday departures, so if you need to fly out on a weekend, you might look for deals ahead of time.

How far in advance can you book a flight?

Trying to figure out how early you should book your flight? It’s possible to start comparing international airfares on Travelocity up to 12 months in advance. However, it does depend on the carrier as not all airlines release their prices that far out. According to our 2021 flight demand trends, last minute planners can still bag a bargain with some of the cheapest fares appearing 0-2 weeks prior to their travel dates.

*According to flight demand on Travelocity.com from January to December 2021. Savings are subject to change based on departure location, date and destination.

Tips for Booking a Hotel with Expedia

Booking the right hotel is one of the most important factors when it comes to getting the most out of your vacation. If you're looking to plan an unforgettable trip, you'll need to find the right place to stay. Learn how Expedia can help you book the right hotel for your needs whether you're taking the family on a vacation, traveling with someone special, or just taking some time away for yourself.

How to book a hotel on Expedia?

When you book through Expedia, the entire process is simple. You'll find a wide range of accommodation options and destinations to choose from, as well as a variety of search filters to help you find exactly what you're looking for. That means you can search exclusively for hotels with a pool , pet-friendly policies , or family-friendly amenities . Las Vegas hotels and New York hotels are especially popular, but you'll also find options for other destinations like  Myrtle Beach .

What are the most important things when choosing a hotel?

Finding the right hotel means opting for stays that cater to your unique needs. Quite a few factors go into what a hotel is like to experience, and you'll need to consider them all.

  • Amenities: think about what kind of amenities you need to have. You'll find options for pools or fitness centers in hotels all across the country and beyond.
  • Location: the location can also play a major role in your experience, especially if you want to be close to certain attractions like downtown or the beach.
  • Price & Reviews: you'll want to find a balance between affordability and positive reviews to get as much as you can within the budget you've set.

How far in advance should I book a hotel?

You can sometimes book a hotel as late as the day before check-in, but most of the time, you'll want to book well in advance. You can see what's available up to 40 days in advance, and even monitor the price trends if you're not ready to book right away. Prices tend to go down the closer it gets to the date, especially around the 21-day mark. 21 days from your check-in, prices are generally somewhat normal, with prices often falling, then briefly rising, then falling again. Last-minute bookings can be especially cheap since hotels are desperate to book their last few rooms.

While it varies by destination, you should generally book a hotel room between 1 and 3 months before you travel. Seasonality plays a major part in rates and availability, too. For example,  California or Florida are often fully booked during the busy summer months, so it's wise to reserve at least 6 months ahead when traveling at that time of year. You should also reserve well in advance if you're heading to major events. For instance,  Madison Square Garden Hotels  should be reserved early when there are sporting fixtures or concerts taking place. The same applies for local holidays. Hotels in New Orleans , for example, get booked out early for ‘Mardi Gras' festivities, while  hotels in Mexico  can be hard to come by for 'Day of the Dead' celebrations.

How can I find the cheapest hotels?

To find the cheapest hotel rooms, you'll need to consider several factors that affect the price. The time of year you visit can play a major role in price, with the off-season tending to be cheaper overall. Hotels with lower star ratings are going to be more affordable as well. Additionally, you'll find cheaper options in less popular neighborhoods, which can be an easy way to save since a lot of cheap neighborhoods in popular destinations are located right next to the hot spots. Keep in mind, however, that these are general trends rather than strict rules. Hop over to the  cheap hotels  page for gathering budget accommodation ideas. There, you could score the best cheap hotels in the United States of America  and countless more popular spots across the globe. You'll also see alternative cheap lodging options, including  hostels , vacation home rentals and motels .

How can I find some of the best deals on hotels?

If you're looking for the best hotel deals, you'll want to implement several filters into your search. You can sort your results by price so that the cheapest options are automatically put at the top of the list. Then, adjust your filters to match your budget, and whether or not you want to only include fully refundable properties. If you become a member, you'll find even more hotel discounts.

You can also download and book through the  Expedia app  to unlock exclusive discounts on select  United States hotels  and destinations worldwide. You could land significant savings on  Los Angeles hotels , as well as generous discounts on  hotels in Chicago  and other top holiday spots. When booking in advance, you'll often score early-bird deals. That said, don't rule out last-minute offers, especially during low-season dates . Hotels in Key West  and other American seaside resorts often have amazing discounts outside of the school holidays.

Why should I book a hotel with Expedia?

When you book with Expedia, planning the ultimate vacation is easier than ever. Not only will you be able to find a hotel for your trip, but we can take care of your flight as well, with the potential for additional savings if you book your flight and your stay together. Plus, you'll find flexible cancellation policies on numerous hotels along with opportunities for booking on short notice. You can become a member of our One Key Loyalty Rewards program for free and enjoy even more discounts.

There are also  'book now, pay later' hotels . As well as amazing deals, you'll have 24/7 access to support through the  service  page, giving you peace of mind while travelling.

Are hotels fully refundable on Expedia?

Some hotels offer flexible cancellation policies when you book with Expedia. You'll be able to see on the results page which hotels in your search are fully refundable, as each that qualifies will be marked with "fully refundable" in green letters. Additionally, you can set the 'fully refundable' filter when searching to only show results that offer free cancellation hotels .

What types of accommodation can I find on Expedia?

You'll encounter a plethora of different lodging types on Expedia, such as charming boutique hotels in Cancun and more tropical destinations. Large family-friendly and adult-only  hotels in Hawaii  and other beach resorts are popular among those seeking a relaxing break in the sun. For even more comfort, consider  all-inclusive hotels in Puerto Rico and other summer holiday spots. This type of accommodation includes all meals and drinks, so you don't even have to lift a finger while on holiday.  Bed and breakfasts ,  apartments  and holiday ski hotels  are just some of the other lodging types you can choose from.

Is it possible to filter accommodations based on specific amenities?

Yes, you'll find an array of filters that let you laser in on the best places to stay based on the amenities you need. Whether you need business facilities in your  Manhattan Hotel or are seeking relaxing  spa hotels in Miami , Expedia's many search filters make it easy to find the best place to stay.

How can I explore different star-rated accommodations and accommodation brands?

If you like to stay in a specific hotel, type the brand name into the search bar to see all available options. Expedia works with most of the major chains, including Hilton, Hyatt Hotels and Marriott. Scroll down further, and below the search field, you'll see the filters for star ratings. Whether you're seeking  5-star hotels in Nashville  or  budget hotels in New York , Expedia makes booking a breeze.

Are there accommodations located near popular points of interest or in specific neighborhoods?

One of the great things about using Expedia's hotel booking site is that you can filter search results by area and popular locations. For example, when searching for  hotels in Orlando , you can select the “Walt Disney World® Resort” filter to view properties near the theme park. There's even a handy map so you can pinpoint the best place to stay in destinations worldwide.

Are luxury accommodations available on Expedia, and how can I book them?

If you're seeking a high-end experience, take your pick from the many  luxury hotels  available on Expedia. You can locate upscale lodging by ticking filters, like 5-star hotels, or ordering results by 'price high to low' and 'Guest rating + our choice'.

Do you cater to different types of travelers, such as business or leisure travelers?

Of course. When searching and booking a hotel room, you can filter by hotel and traveller type, including:

  • Family-friendly
  • All-Inclusive
  • LGBTQ-welcoming
  • Business-friendly

Planning a trip can be easier through an online travel agency than if you handle each aspect of the planning separately. You can book hotels, air travel, rental cars, and more through a single site, and booking everything together sometimes results in discounts. By inputting a destination, a range of dates, and other preferences, you will see a list of options for each aspect of travel.

The best online travel agencies offer options from the largest number of airlines, hotels, car rental agencies, and more. Look for sites that offer discounts for combining reservations for different aspects of your trip. For example, the best sites will have lower rates if you book both plane tickets and a hotel through their services. The best sites also provide reviews from customers who actually have booked through the service. These are our top picks.

Final Verdict

Frequently asked questions, methodology, best overall : booking.com.

 Booking.com

This industry leader offers one of the most comprehensive trip planning platforms on the Internet.

Lots of options to choose from

Interface is easy to use

Numerous filters to customize your search

Tricky to tell whether changes/cancellations can be made with Booking.com or the vendor directly

Booking.com was founded in 1996 and has grown into an industry leader that stands out for being one of the most comprehensive trip planning platforms out there. From one website, you can compare and book accommodations, flights (including one-way and multi-city flights), sightseeing activities, and even airport taxis. The website lists more than 28 million accommodation options, from hotels, hostels, and B&Bs to vacation homes and luxury resorts—you can browse more choices per destination on Booking.com than other online travel agencies. The website also performs well on cost and typically returns lower-than-average prices for flights and hotels.

Booking.com's interface is also easy to use. On the home page, search for a hotel by entering your chosen destination and dates. Then, use the extensive list of filters—such as price range and distance from the city center—to narrow the results down and find the best fit. You can also search for a specific hotel, or seek inspiration by clicking through options grouped by destination or property type or by topic such as the country’s best Michelin-starred hotel restaurants or the top cities for vegan travelers. The flights, car rental, and other tabs are just as intuitive.

Best Budget : Skyscanner

 Skyscanner

You can compare prices across airlines, hotels, and car rentals.

Simple interface

Option to toggle searches between specific dates or by monthly calendars

Search Everywhere button is great for spontaneous planners

Extra clicks are required to make a final purchase

Must read fine print for changes/cancellations—may need to deal directly with the vendor

Ads on the sidebar can be distracting

Find deals on airfare, hotels, and car rentals with an aggregator site like Skyscanner , which uses a metasearch engine to compare prices from all online travel agencies and the airline, hotel, or car rental company in question. Run searches with fixed dates, opt to compare airfare prices month to month, or click “Cheapest Month.” Searches also include options for nearby airports or non-stop flights only. With hotel searches, you can choose to select only from properties with free cancellation, a cleanliness rating of 4.5/5 or higher, or 3- or 4-starred hotels only. Car rental searches include an option to select “return car to different location.”

Once you’ve found the best rate, click on the link to be redirected to the third-party site to make your booking. Feeling spontaneous? The Search Everywhere button on the homepage offers a list of the cheapest flight deals for destinations both locally and across the world—just plug in your departure airport first.

Best Price Predictor : Hopper

The company claims a 95 percent accuracy rate at predicting when flights and hotel rates will be cheapest.

Color-coded system makes it easy to determine cheapest days to buy

App is easy to use

Option to track flights and receive alerts when the best time to buy arises

Some have mentioned the app functions better as a research tool than a booking tool

Unclear whether Hopper will price match if you find a cheaper flight elsewhere

Hopper is a travel app available on iOS and Android that aims to help travelers save on airfare by usng historical data and their own algorithm to predict when flights will be cheapest. Just type in where and when you’d like to fly and Hopper will present you with a color-coded pricing calendar indicating how much tickets are likely to cost. (Green is the least expensive, then yellow, orange, and red for most expensive.) Hopper will also recommend you either buy now or wait, or you can choose to watch a trip and receive notifications on the best time to buy. In addition, the app has expanded to offer hotel and car rental price predictions, too.

Some newer features since the app’s inception in 2009 include an option to freeze a price for a limited time—for an extra fee—as well as exclusive app-only discounts. Hopper is free to download, and you can choose to book directly through the app, though some users mentioned they use Hopper as more of a research tool before booking directly with the airline or hotel. The company claims a 95 percent accuracy rate at predicting flight rates up to a year ahead.

Most Innovative : Kiwi.com

This metasearch engine scours the web to piece together the ideal itinerary using planes, trains, buses, and more.

Creative itineraries get you where you need to go, especially if you’ve got a multi-stop trip

Kiwi Guarantee offers rebooking or cancellation protections

Nomad option appeals to travelers with a lot of flexibility

Creative itineraries mean you may not fly out of the same airport you flew into

Kiwi Guarantee has an additional fee

Charges all-in-one fee for booking flights, trains, buses (though you can always purchase a la carte)

Travelers planning multi-city destinations and seeking a bargain, as well as those looking to take planes, trains, and automobiles to get there, might consider Kiwi . Kiwi is a metasearch engine that scours and pieces together itineraries from various airlines (even if they don’t have a codeshare agreement), considers multiple airports (even if your arrival airport is different from departure), and offers booking options, whether you’re looking at very specific dates or more general ones (up to 60 nights).

Some will find the ability to make multiple bookings for a particular trip more convenient than going at it manually several different times, though note that you must opt into the Kiwi Guarantee program to access rebooking and refund protections should your reservation change or be canceled. Kiwi’s Nomad option allows you to plug in a bunch of destinations you’d like to visit and the length of your intended stay, and the website will churn out the most affordable itineraries for review.

Best for Eco-Conscious : Kind Traveler

A give-and-get business model means booking accommodations with exclusive perks, a donation to environmental organizations, and more.

All participating hotels include a local give-back component

Exclusive savings and perks

Participating hotels are located in some of the most beautiful places in the world

Inventory is much smaller compared to other booking platforms

Some of the amenities mentioned are based on availability only

In 2022, Kind Traveler (an online trave agency focused on hotel bookings) announced an increase in environmentally and socially conscious hotels, charity donations, voluntourism opportunities, and additional perks like waived resort fees or a welcome amenity.

Unlock exclusive hotel rates and perks from participating Kind Traveler hotels with a minimum $10/night minimum donation to a local charity. For example, stay at the Six Senses Laamu in the Maldives and receive up to $33 off the nightly rate and perks such as a food and beverage credit and an Earth Lab or Alchemy Bar workshop when you make a donation to Manta Trust. The organization funds coastal research to protect the island nation’s large yet fragile population of reef mantas.

Select from more than 140 participating hotels from the Hawaiian Islands to Bozeman, Montana, and the Maldives. Charities include wildlife, human rights, arts, education, and environmental preservation organizations.

Best for Social Impact : I Like Local

Choose from a host of travel experiences with the peace of mind that 100 percent of the cost goes directly to local partners.

Social impact mission woven into organization’s business model

Immersive experiences led by local guides

Range of experiences offered

May not be best fit for those seeking upscale, luxury experiences and stays

Can’t sort experiences by a list of countries (though an interactive map is available)

No experiences outside of Africa and Asia

For an online travel agency with a booking platform designed to route dollars spent directly to the communities travelers intend to visit, consider I Like Local . Visit the website to browse a host of travel experiences in countries including Indonesia, Kenya, and Cambodia. Experiences include homestays and farmstays as well as wellness and culturally oriented experiences—from cooking and cycling tours to weaving classes.

To search for an experience, select from drop-down items like travel dates and experience categories, or view a global map and click on a country to view experiences that way.

The platform got its start in 2014 and has grown to 4,000 local hosts across nearly 20 countries. As a social impact organization, 100 percent of each booking fee goes to local hosts. To date, 16,000 travelers have booked with I Like Local.

Best for Design-Forward Homestays : Plum Guide

Browse and book seriously vetted, design-forward vacation homes.

Highly curated inventory of vacation rentals across the world

Design-forward

Thorough vetting process

Does not publish guest reviews

Other platforms have homes available across more destinations

When it comes to booking a vacation home, serviced apartment, or condo, travelers are spoiled for choice. Plum Guide is an online travel agency that specializes in accommodations—though not just any home makes its directory. The company claims that each potential home listed on its site must jump through 150 hoops to be included, from internet speed and mattress and pillow quality to the showers’ water pressure and the home’s proximity to dining, shopping, and attractions.

Search by a featured collection on the website such as “ pet-friendly homes ” or “one-of-a-kind homes in Palm Springs.” Scroll to the bottom of its homepage to view its top destinations, as well as a list of all destinations where Plum Guide homes are available, including Barbados, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland, the U.S., and Turkey. Note: From the top right-hand corner of the site, use the dropdown menu to select currency of choice.

As long as you know what you value most out of your travel experience—such as affordability, social impact, or luxe accommodations—there’s an online travel agency to help plan your next trip. Be sure to read the fine print, as some agencies are third-party websites and not direct vendors. If you're not sure where to start, Booking.com is your best bet for a smooth user experience and hard-to-beat offers on flights, hotels, and other travel arrangements.

What Is the Biggest Travel Agency?

Our choice for best overall, Booking.com, is known as an industry leader with listings for all major hotels, airlines, car rental companies, and more. It boasts more choices for accommodations per destination than any other site, and we found its interface to be user-friendly.

Are Online Travel Agencies Worth It?

This depends on your needs and priorities. The best online travel agencies certainly can save time by booking everything all at once. However, if you're someone who is good at haggling and enjoys the details of planning a trip, you might be able to find better deals by reaching out to hotels or other destinations and speaking to someone personally.

Is It Cheaper to Book Online Than With a Travel Agent?

Not always. A travel agent you know and trust should have the experience and connections to find deals that can match or surpass what you'll find online. Additionally, if something goes wrong, travel agents provide you with an actual person you can use as an advocate to correct the problem . But if you don't have access to a good travel agent, online sites still provide plenty of ways to streamline planning and save money .

We considered dozens of online travel agencies and narrowed down the options based on user experience, volume and quality of inventory, unique offerings and specials, and customer reviews. We also assessed travel companies’ environmentally and socially conscious policies.

5 Of The Best Websites To Use When Booking A Flight

W hen it comes to planning a trip , doing as much research as you can is highly essential, especially when you have a budget to stick to and a specific travel timeframe in mind. That means conducting your accommodation searches on various platforms. If your adventure entails getting on an airplane, booking a flight several months in advance is usually a good idea so you can track prices more efficiently.

There are also a lot of factors you ought to consider when booking flights. How much time do you have before your preferred travel dates? Although planning a last-minute trip is completely doable, finding cost-friendly airfare becomes a bigger challenge, especially if you don't have much date flexibility or are planning to fly during the holidays when travel is notoriously expensive. If money is an issue and you just want the cheapest flight combination available, you may have to be willing to slog through late or overnight flights or endure longer-than-usual layovers. Lastly, if you have credit card perks or rewards programs that offer free miles, you should prioritize avenues that allow you to take advantage of these benefits.

Considering all these components, the process of finding and booking a flight that fits most of your requirements is fairly easy to accomplish. To help you get started on your search, we've rounded up some of the best flight booking platforms for you to utilize based on personal experience, suggestions, and positive reviews shared online by travel experts and regular customers alike. At the end of the article, there will be a more detailed explanation of how we went about the website selection process for this roundup.

As a one-stop travel search aggregator that lets users look up not just flights but car rentals and hotel accommodations, among other things, Kayak is a popular go-to among air travelers who have a budget at the top of their priority list. It has a user-friendly interface, whether you use the platform on desktop or mobile. After entering the airports you'd like to depart from and arrive at as well as your preferred travel timeframe, you'll immediately see a list of available flight combinations, with the cheapest and best — in terms of flight times, the duration of all flight legs and layovers, and price combined — options at the top of the queue. Various filters are also on hand to help you finetune your results, allowing you to limit the number of stops, prioritize takeoff and landing times, and choose your preferred airlines, among other things.

When you access Kayak on a computer, even before you hit the search button on the main page, you'll immediately see a price trends graph given your selected destination, so you can sort of plan to keep an eye out for potentially lower prices. On the search results page, a useful Advice box at the top of the filter side panel tells you if it's a good time to buy or wait for a better deal. In any case, you can also switch the Track Prices toggle on so you can get email alerts regarding your flight search.

If your travel dates are not set in stone, simply indicate it in the date selection dropdown box before hitting the search button. This will produce a helpful Flexible Dates table on the results page that will let you choose the cheapest timeframe possible without having to do multiple searches.

Like Kayak — its parent company — Momondo is another travel search engine that is becoming a favorite among various online travel roundups. It has most of the same features and is likely providing the same flight search results as Kayak, but the price trends graph for your destination is conveniently on top of the results page instead, allowing you to make quick date modifications if needed without having to exit out of the flight's list.

There's also a nifty Flight Insights link at the top of the results page that gives you a guide on how to get the cheapest possible flight to your chosen destination. This feature mostly benefits travelers with flexible travel dates as it gives advice on which month, day, and time flights to the selected destination are most affordable, as well as the best airline options available. More importantly, a recommendation on how far in advance you should be looking into flights is also provided if you want to save some money.

Google Flights

Google's Flights portal is pretty straightforward and is a great option for people who don't want to open too many tabs to do their flight research. Everything you need to access is on the same page, and the list of available flights is generated pretty quickly. Results dynamically update even when you change the airports you want to leave from and arrive at, which is ideal when you're trying to pick the best location to fly to price and time-wise. There's a Date Grid button that lays out all the flight prices in a convenient matrix, with the most optimal options highlighted in green. Meanwhile, the Price Graph provides a selection of trip durations based on the number of days you've initially selected, in case you are able to move your itinerary earlier or later.

A number of the best flights available are separated from other available flight options, all of which you can instantly compare without opening a new window by clicking on the dropdown arrow next to the trips you are considering. There's also a useful Price History section that alerts you when the costs of flights are higher than normal compared to usual costs and illustrates it in a chronologically arranged graph.

Air travelers who just want to go somewhere for an adventure may enjoy Google Flight's Explore option, which provides you with the cheapest possible destinations that leave from your home airport. Note that suggested itineraries are based according to popularity, cost, and convenience, among other factors.

If you have a specific destination in mind, Skyscanner functions similarly to the rest of the travel search engines mentioned earlier. After providing your location, destination, departure and return dates, and number of travelers, you will be provided the most ideal flights available, with the best, cheapest, and fastest options highlighted at the top of the list. By default, flights are sorted according to what's best — determined by price, speed, number of stops, and the level of hassle, among others — but you can also organize the list in terms of flight duration, overall cost, and according to departure time at either your home base or from your flight back.

Skyscanner works a lot better if you have flexible dates and destinations. Using your home airport or your departure and return dates, the Explore Everywhere button on the home page will give you a wide variety of vacations, including international ones. You can highlight the cheapest flight suggestions or ones that fly you directly.

There's also a "Let us inspire your next trip" button, an AI-backed travel search currently in its beta stage of development. You can enter any phrase you like to describe your ideal escapade — "family beach trip in the Caribbean," for example — and be given relevant flight suggestions.

To round out your airfare research, make sure you check if Southwest services your particular destination. In most cases, the budget airline provides the cheapest options available. If you happen to have a Southwest credit card, you can also accumulate and use miles just as easily. Although the airline doesn't have assigned seats — priority boarding is based on the time you check in — one of Southwest's best perks is that, as a passenger, you get to fly with two bags for free.

Based on testing, none of Southwest's flights appear in search results when you use any of the previously mentioned flight-booking websites. Because of this, Southwest is a must-visit platform whenever you're booking a flight.

You can also make the rounds with other popular low-cost airlines just to cover your bases, namely JetBlue , Frontier , and Spirit , to name a few. Unlike Southwest, they may show up in aggregator searches, but it doesn't hurt to go directly to your chosen airline's website. If you're traveling internationally, make sure you look up budget airlines local to the area as well.

How We Chose These Travel Sites

The websites featured in this piece were chosen based on our actual and successful experiences with them in our travels. We also considered suggestions and positive reviews shared online by travel experts and regular customers alike. While most of our suggestions are available via mobile app, we highly recommend conducting your airfare search on a computer for a wider view of the results and to access the full slate of your chosen platform's features.

The travel-booking services we highlighted in this list should adequately give you an idea of what to expect to spend on your impending airfare, but don't let this guide limit your search to just these websites. Finding the best flights isn't a perfect science. Since cost fluctuations are expected and unpredictable, it's recommended that you book a flight as soon as you find one within your parameters.

As much as possible, if you can, book your flights directly with your chosen airline. Whether it's because of your prior experience or it's the airline you have the most rewards points with, it's generally the smarter choice as it does away with extra fees and the potential hassle of having to course your booking through an online travel agency. If your flight gets canceled or there are any real-time issues the airline has to deal with, having a direct line of communication and getting timely assistance without going through a third party is more convenient. While trying out the flight-booking websites on our list, don't hesitate to also take a peek at what any mentioned airlines offer on their official websites for a well-rounded comparison.

I'm a travel planner. These 5 US destinations are my top recommendations right now.

  • I'm a travel planner , and there are so many US destinations my clients are loving right now.
  • Milkwakee is one of my favorite spots in the Midwest , and Newport is a great East Coast trip.
  • Out West, there's the stunning Sedona, and Savannah is an underrated Southern town .

Insider Today

As a travel planner, I book my fair share of national-park stays and Disney vacations , but my clients have also been loving some less advertised US destinations.

If you're looking for a more under-the-radar spot for a family trip or romantic getaway, the States has plenty of low-key cities to choose from.

Here are some of my favorites right now.

Milwaukee is a Midwest gem.

online booking for trip

The Wisconsin city is located on Lake Michigan's western shore , less than two hours from Chicago.

For outdoorsy types, you can hit up Bradford Beach or hike and bike at Lakeshore State Park. If you like beer, tour some local breweries — Urban Harvest, Miller Brewing Company, Milwaukee Brewing Co. — and taste their offerings.

Baseball fans can even spend a day tailgating and catch a Brewers game at American Family Field .

Milwaukee has an expansive art museum and a spectacular zoo. The greenhouses at Mitchell Park Domes also showcase beautiful flowers and plants.

Head west to experience the glorious Sedona.

online booking for trip

Located about two hours from Phoenix, Sedona is a nature-lover's paradise.

The area's gorgeous red-colored rocks offer countless hiking opportunities , including braving Bell Rock butte. For more active adventures, there are great places to kayak and mountain bike, or you can head to one of the supernatural vortexes (energy hot spots) Sedona is known for.

The natural water slide at Slide Rock State Park is a unique Arizona attraction, and Oak Creek is a gorgeous place to swim . If you're really brave, you can book a Pink Jeep Tour to see more of the nearby jaw-dropping sights while basically hanging off the cliffs.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is always at the top of my list, followed by an Old West chuckwagon dinner at Blazin' M Ranch. Downtown Sedona also has a plethora of retail and restaurant options, including the famous Cowboy Club.

San Juan is a tropical destination that doesn't require a passport.

online booking for trip

San Juan is a great mix of beach fun and historical sightseeing. Plus, since Puerto Rico is a US territory, US citizens don't need a passport to visit.

Visiting Old San Juan feels like taking a trip back in time. I suggest booking a tour that takes you to Capilla del Cristo, Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery, and the San Juan Cathedral.

Stay at one of the premier beach spots, like Hilton's El Conquistador Resort. And if you're looking for a thrill, book a snorkeling excursion at Icacos Island, hike through rainforests to search for waterfalls, or find a spot to go ziplining.

My favorite experience, which cannot be missed, is kayaking to Laguna Grande at night to see spectacular bioluminescent water.

Savannah has endless opportunities for fun, food, and relaxation.

online booking for trip

The best time to visit Savannah, Georgia , is in the spring or fall when the weather is milder.

Take some time to stroll the shops of River Street or hop on one of the city's famous ghost tours — Savannah is considered one of the most haunted cities in America . One of my favorite ways to see the city is by riverboat cruise, and if you have time, take a day trip to the lovely Tybee Island.

History and architecture buffs should also explore the Olde Pink House, Forsyth Park, and the gorgeous homes on Jones Street.

Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room, which serves up southern delicacies, is the best place to grab lunch. Then, you can stroll the riverfront to grab a treat or drink.

Newport is an East Coast delight.

online booking for trip

Newport, Rhode Island , is a mix of natural beauty, history, and stunning architecture — b e sure to visit some of the town's historic mansions.

I highly recommend renting a car and driving down the gorgeous Ocean Drive coastal road. But the city also offers Trolley Tours if you want to stick to the inland sights.

You can also take in the views from the 3.5-mile Newport Cliff Walk or book a thrilling rail-bike tour.

The town has many great restaurants, including The Mooring and Bar 'Cino. But if you can't choose, just book a food tour. There are also a number of nearby wineries and breweries, including Newport Vineyard and Greenvale, to check out.

New Travel Online Booking Tool Provider Selected

August 7, 2024

Procurement and Payment Services (PPS) recently conducted a formal bid process and selected a new travel online booking tool partner. The evaluation committee recommended that the new contract be awarded to Key Travel as the bidder representing the best value to Northwestern.

Key Travel specializes in supporting non-profit and humanitarian entities, they have their own proprietary booking tool, and they also provide agent assist booking services for more complex travel. Their costs were very competitive and they also have special negotiated rates with several airlines and hotels.

A detailed transition plan is currently being developed, and we are currently targeting a potential January 1 go live. Department and school representatives will be engaged for key configuration and functionality decisions during the process. Egencia has agreed to work with us and to continue supporting our travel needs as long as we need them to in order to ensure a smooth transition.

T100 will remain on contract as well as an additional resource for agent assist travel booking.

We are really excited to deliver an improved travel booking experience to support faculty, staff, and students on campus that more closely aligns with our needs.

If you have any questions, contact Kathy Koestring at [email protected] .

Is a travel agent worth it the pros and cons.

Travel experts agree there are several advantages to hiring a vacation planner.

The Pros & Cons of Using a Travel Agent

Need to pivot your trip plans but don't want to deal with the extra time, money and hassle of rebooking flights and accommodations on your own? That's just one area where a knowledgeable travel agent (also commonly known as a travel advisor) can help.

Read on to discover the other benefits – as well as the downsides – of using a travel agent, so you can confidently decide whether or not a travel agent is worth it for your next trip.

The Pros of Using a Travel Agent

Travel agents can save you money – and get you other perks.

"In some cases, you'll actually get a better  deal by working with a travel agent," says Jackie Steele, travel expert at MagicGuides . "This could be in the form of a cruise onboard credit (free spending money to use on the ship), access to special agency/group rates, or even just learning about a discount you qualify for but weren't aware of." The best agents will even keep an eye on new discounts as they're announced and apply them to your trip even after you've booked, he notes.

Travel agents handle all the details

Hotel room? Booked. Dinner reservations? Made. Tour tickets? Ready to go. A travel agent handles every detail of your vacation itinerary. "The traveler still gets to be involved in the fun part of dreaming up ideas and providing their travel wishes, while we take and perfect them," says Jessica Parker, founder of Trip Whisperer .

Molly McShea, owner and travel advisor at McShea Travel , points out that travel agents can also help with timing logistics. "Travel agents know how many days should be spent in each destination, which tours go together, and how many things you should do in a day," she says, adding that crafting an itinerary can be challenging if it's not something you regularly do. Additionally, travel agents can help you choose the best time to visit your preferred destination(s) based on seasonality and your budget, and sift through travel insurance policies to find the best option for your needs.

Travel agents can provide local expertise

"A travel advisor's industry connections and relationships provide added value to their clients," says Valerie Edman, a luxury travel advisor and agency owner at Cultured Travel LLC. She says when working with a travel agent, travelers gain access to a global network of connections including:

  • In-destination specialists who work exclusively with travel advisors and can connect travelers with unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences they wouldn't otherwise know about
  • Exclusive experiences not available to the general public

You'll avoid surprise fees

When deciding if a travel agent is worth it for you, remember this: A reputable agent can guarantee you won't encounter any surprise fees on accommodations and activities once your trip is booked.

You'll have someone to troubleshoot unexpected travel issues

A travel advisor is essentially your personal vacation concierge. "Because they've been around for so long, agents really know what to look for," says Christopher Elliott , a consumer advocate and journalist. "Travel agents are among the first to know about flight cancellations and delays , making it easy for them to rebook itineraries right away."

The Cons of Using a Travel Agent

It might not be your cheapest option.

There are some instances when it makes more sense to plan your own trip. "If you're planning a quick flight from New York City to Los Angeles, it's easy enough to book it yourself online directly or through a third-party booking site," says Elliott. "If you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip or bucket list honeymoon , that's when you call the experts."

You'll have less flexibility in your itinerary

The upside of working with a travel agent is having someone plan an epic vacation for you based on industry knowledge and local expertise. But this can also be a downside in the event you discover an activity you'd like to do or a restaurant you'd like to try that isn't on your pre-planned itinerary. If you alter your plans, you risk losing money; plus, the time it takes for you and your travel agent to coordinate your change of plans may not be worth the hassle.

You still have to do some research

It's important to find an agent you can trust, which means you still have to do some of the vacation planning. For this part, Parker recommends picking up the phone. "Lots of people avoid or don't pick up the phone as much anymore," she says. "That's where you get the high-touch service, tone of voice, excitement or concerns to manage." She advises to look for the following red flags:

  • No fees: " Travel advisors are charging planning fees more now or increasing them, so the client knows more confidently than ever, we work for them, not the suppliers with the best commissions," Parker explains. "There are a lot of things that are non-commissionable and the advisor's time and expertise shouldn't be given away for free, either. That's the best way to show an advisor takes their business seriously."
  • Limited options: If you work with someone who is inexperienced or has an incentive to book you with a certain supplier, they may not be prioritizing your best interests. "It's important to check if they are with a larger consortia, accreditations and network, typically listed on their website and signatures," says Parker. "That level of mindshare doesn't come with a lone advisor unless they have many, many years of experience."
  • Slow response times: If communication is delayed, that's a sign they may be too busy to plan your trip – but again, this is something you can avoid by having the right conversations early on.

Edman suggestes starting your search with the American Society of Travel Advisors . "ASTA-verified travel advisors are committed to the highest industry standards and have verifiable industry knowledge so consumers can feel confident in working with them," she says.

AI Will Speed Travel Agent Decline, Says Booking CEO. Not So, Says ASTA Boss

Dennis Schaal

Dennis Schaal , Skift

August 5th, 2024 at 4:16 PM EDT

True, as the head of ASTA says, some people will always prefer to use a travel advisor over an online travel website. But in the big picture, how will AI skew the trend?

Dennis Schaal

There has been a resurgence in the use of travel agents since the pandemic – and even before – especially for luxury trips.

One survey of U.S. travelers in 2023 found that 38% of millennials and Gen Zers said they prefer traditional travel agents to sort out their trips. There are reports of High Street travel agents in the UK opening new physical storefronts, as are several travel agencies in Singapore, for example.

But Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel thinks that growth will fade fast and that AI will accelerate a decline in traditional travel agents.

“But the truth is the human travel agent has been a declining population for a very long time,” Fogel said on the Decoder podcast that came out Monday. “And, I’ll tell you, the things we are working on right now in AI and things of that nature, I suspect it’s going to continue to decline.”

Fogel, of course, has skin in the game. His company competes with offline travel agents, and several Booking Holdings brands, including, Priceline , Booking.com , and Kayak have launched a variety of generative AI products, including trip-planners.

All of these virtual agents, regardless of the company, have significant flaws, but these are early days.

Fogel said the position of traditional travel agents will continue to be reduced “as we create the virtual travel agents and as we use all the skills we have in AI, all the new things that are coming out, particularly in generative AI, and try to recreate what was, once upon a time, where the only way you could do travel was speaking to a human being.”

What About the Travel Agent Who Knows the Hotel Concierge?

The podcast host asked Fogel whether traditional travel agents, who may have ties and personal connections with a hotel concierge, may have an edge over websites like Booking.com?

“We are doing it too with our best customers,” Fogel said, in trying to offer upgraded services. “Don’t forget, an airline or hotel cares a lot more about the volume we provide to them than any single agent. We did $151 billion of travel last year. That’s a heck of a lot of travel. We have a lot of relationships.”

He said Booking Holdings has to figure out how to differentiate services for its top customers.

“The issue for us is how do we distinguish,” Fogel said. “Does someone who does more business with us, do we give them a higher level of service? Do we separate out and categorize customers? All businesses are always looking out trying to take care of their best customers in a better way.”

ASTA Compares Online Travel Agencies to Vending Machines

Asked about Fogel’s comments on the supposed decline of traditional travel agents, Zane Kerby, CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors, told Skift he applauds Booking.com and Expedia for their utility as a place to compare prices and schedules across brands.

But Kerby asked whether Fogel is planning to alert customers that its new AI travel agents are programmed to tilt results toward destinations and suppliers “that are paying Booking.com for preferential placement?”

“Just as I don’t buy dinner from a vending machine, I don’t buy something as important as travel from a low cost/low service provider,” Kerby said via email. “The customer service travel advisors provide cannot be replicated by AI. The trust that travel advisors build with their customers is authentic and it’s what we stake our reputation on.”

Kerby added that some customers will always “prefer to work with a human travel advisor, always.”

The ASTA CEO said a quote from Priceline.com founder Jay Walker is relevant: “You don’t need a human until you need one.”

Informal Skift Survey

We asked a few Skift staffers who are Gen Zers or millennials whether they had used a traditional travel agent to plan recent trips, and got a mixed response.

Elsa Verzijl, a Skifter based in Manchester, England, was quick to say no. “I can confirm this GenZ has never ever used a travel agent :) What do they do anyway?” Verzijl asked.

However, another Skift employee, millennial Farheem Aziz, based in Brooklyn, New York, had a positive experience using a travel agent for a trip to Europe. “She was able to help us get great deals on hotels and flights (Greece and France), but there were a few travel mishaps. For example, she made a mistake with our car rental and by the time we went to go pick up our rental it was closed. But to make it up, she comp’d our hotel in Paris, which was great, so overall we had a great experience with her.”

Aziz said this was her first experience using a travel agent. “We moved around a lot in Greece and France so she was a huge help in helping us stay organized, especially because people in our friend group had different requirements (leaving from different cities, preferred different departure/arrival times),” Aziz said.

And the travel agent did one thing that Fogel’s Booking.com, Priceline or Agoda would probably rarely be able to do: The travel agent, Aziz said, had a friend’s room decorated to celebrate a birthday and arranged for a cake.

Another millennial Skifter, Alison McCarthy, based in Brooklyn, said she’s never considered using a travel agent “since I enjoy planning trips and am skeptical of how ‘personalized’ they could make it.”

McCarthy, though, said she might think about using a travel agent if she takes her young daughter to Disney.

“I’ve heard they’re super helpful for that experience and I’m not as worried about the personalized recommendations as I would be going to a new city or country,” McCarthy said.

AJ Blanchet, another millennial Skifter, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, likewise has never used a travel advisor and expressed similar feelings about the fun of do-it-yourself trip planning.

“By the time I started booking my own flights (around 2008) it’s always felt more convenient (and fun!) to book my flight, lodging, and activities (like restaurants, show tickets, excursions) on my own,” Blanchet said.

Travel Agents Using AI

Like ASTA, Fora Travel sees the online travel agency approach as lacking.

“Once again, the OTAs are predicting the decline and fall of the travel agency industry,” Fora Travel co-founder Evan Frank said via email. “It’s not a new story. In contrast, we’ve onboarded more than 5,000 active advisors since our launch three years ago, the vast majority of whom are brand new to the industry.

Frank said Fora’s travel advisers use AI and tech for effiencies “while leveraging relationships and general human understanding to provide travelers with curation, expertise, and property-level benefits that are notably absent from the standard OTA approach.”

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.
