Nice park, some full HU, others partial, or no hookups. We camped at Marquette Tourist Park in a Travel Trailer.

Not really a park for big rigs, i.e. Fifth wheels or trailers over about 28. Pick your site carefully if you are a large rig. Roads are narrow with some tight corners. Treed sites can make backing in a challenge as trees are front, back, and sides....

At first, I was worried about this campground as there isn’t much privacy. It’s in the middle of the city! It turned out to be just fine and was pretty quiet though within 10 minutes of downtown. There’s a beach and a place to buy wood and ice on site. We didn’t go to the beach bc the point was to be in Lake Superior but it was nice to be on site. The beach we liked, McCartys cove was only ten minutes away. The staff was really nice and recommended an excellent restaurant. The best part is the paved bike path nearby and how close it was to beaches. We had a great time and saved money.

Pros: you can bike all over town from this campground. It is on an extensive network of bike paths and you can easily bike to the Lake Superior beaches or into town. You can also easily access the North mountain bike trail network. Sites are fairly roomy, especially in the electric only area. Cons: the campground sits next to a city facility and during the work week there is a constant sound of fork lifts in operation. There is also a rail line nearby. But, the noise is not too obnoxious. Finally, be sure to have hose and power cord extensions handy. The utilities can be located in weird spots.

This campground is in Marquette, near Northern Michigan University. But once you're camped there, you won't feel like you're in one of the largest cities in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The sites are generally spacious and they have a lot of options to choose from based on what rig you have and how you like to camp. They have tent sites that are non-electric, about 100 RV sites with just electric, and another 38 sites that have water and sewer hookups. They even have some sites that are pull-through.

They also offer a dump station and potable water for folks that don't have the full hookup sites. The campground is adjacent to a municipal park that has a beach. The campground also offers sites that overlook Dead River Basin. The sites aren't paved, so rainy days could lead to some mud to deal with, but the nice stand of trees and the basin view can make up for it. There also are some sites that are tucked into the trees quite a bit for additional privacy.

Because you're near a major UP city, you have access to plenty of shopping and services if you need them, plus there is great cellular service in the campground. The park wifi is a bit weak depending on where you are at in relation to the office, but we used our wifi booster and had smooth sailing for our jobs all day long.

The bathroom and shower facilities seem older but also appeared to be clean and functioned well. There weren't very many showers, so if you need to use one you may need to wait for it.

All-in-all a great campground that serves as a perfect oasis in an area where there aren't any state parks to choose from. We also liked that when they close the office at night, they print out a map with all the reserved sites, so if you show up without a reservation, you can quickly check the map to find an open site. Then you just get some rest and register at the office in the morning.

Stayed here one night at the end of September, and took advantage of the location to resupply. Park is crowded with little to no distance or privacy between sites. Several other campers had dogs running loose, including one that nipped at somebody riding a bike. The Marquette PD made at least two patrols through the park that I saw; don't know if that's a regular occurrence or if something special was going on.

The water here, and farther up the peninsula has a subtle but unmistakable taste to it that we don't care for and ended up buying some bottled water for our coffee. Water pressure was good, though, as was the electricity.

The big benefit to this place is its location: Meijer, Target, Menards, Best Buy, and Walmart are all just over five minutes away. The best thing, though, is Vango's Pizza is also only about five minutes away.

Only downside first: the sewer hook up is on the passenger side. Water and electric, on driver side, are very far apart. Our water hose & electric cable we’re pulled out to max to be able to reach the sewer with 2 sewer hoses linked together. Be prepared! Our experience based one one night transit stay. We dropped out tow loaded with vehicle in a grassy field per helpful suggestion from reception staff, so we were able to unhook and back in to our site with ease. Our site was next to boathouse, very clean and well-maintained. Loved the campground, would stay again.

Location was great for downtown, hiking and mountain biking trails. Waterside campsite layouts were tight with zero privacy and awkward fire pit placements. In addition, there were limited showers and poor timing by staff who cleaned during peak use hours 8-9 am. Would not stay again.

I love this place. I actually live in Marquette, and yet camp here anyway a few minutes from home. I have camped in Tourist Park (what a terrible name for a campground!) twice in a small tent during the Hiawatha Music Festivals, and once car camped to make sure sleeping in my SUV was going to work with my new set up. (Just in case I forgot something so I could quickly drive back home and get it before taking off on my trip). It is so close to everything! You can easily bike, or drive of course, to anywhere in and around Marquette. I like the sites away from the water best as many of them are larger and slightly more private.

In the winter when there is no camping this is a wonderful dog park:)

This is a great campground to stay in if you want to explore Marquette. Close to the bike path and Presque Isle. We stayed for 14 days and biked 180 miles. Campground is busy, but quiet with a great staff. Some of the sites are difficult to figure out where to pull in and hook up to amenities. This isn’t too big of a deal though.

Would definitely stay again.

The campground is really close to the NMU campus. That’s a positive. Also the sunset over the water was gorgeous.

But there was little privacy afforded at this campground. The bathrooms and shower stalls were dirty. And it appeared as though fellow campers were experiencing homelessness. We left after one night to go somewhere else.

Quiet, Well maintained, campground

Came to town for Blues Fest. Basically, just slept there. Grounds were well maintained as was the restrooms and showers. Met the staff every morning finishing their daily cleaning. Showers had plenty of hot water. Has a family rest room and shower with changing table and handicap accessible shower in addition to men and women restroom/showers. Had lots of shady campsites. Sites have electric but no water hook-ups, picnic table and firepit. Has WIFI, and I had no problem using my Verizon service.

Park has a day beach on a small adjacent lake. Campground bit more populated than campgrounds where I normally stay, but quiet. Also has access to numerous biking opportunities. Well suited for family camping. Didn't encounter any insect problems.

I was there Labor Day weekend. My site cost $40. per night which was a bit more than I'm used to spending but I was surprised to even get reservation so close to a holiday weekend.

Check-in is at 3:00, You can check-in early for an additional $10. fee, Checkout is at noon.

Labor Day camping

We have been camping every Labor Day at Marquette Tourist Park for about 8 years. We come up from the mid Michigan area for Marquette’s Blues Fest. This park is set in a beautiful area around the Northern University. Some sites have full hook up that we love, but this year we didn’t reserve early enough to get one. The site we are on is #2 and it’s very nice, facing the water. It has water and electric and a great big tree for shade. We love Marquette, it’s our “Happy Place”.

Great spot to experience Marquette!

This is a municipal campground adjacent to other city rec property and the police station, NMU. Sits on the black river basin which equates to a fairly large lake. Scenic for spots across from the basin. Some spots have no shade so be sure to inquire about that when booking if you’re coming in the summer. Shower facilities dated but pretty clean and do the job.

Very nice campground with old growth trees located in the city of Marquette. Close to bike paths and mountain bike trails. Nice beach area. Close ride to the downtown area with lots of shops and dining. Newly remodeled restrooms. Large sites, friendly staff.

Endless bike trails

Stayed on our drive from Mackinac to see the pictured rocks lake shore. The campground is surrounded by 18 miles of trails. No camp store, but a convenience store is a quarter mile away. Northern Michigan university is at the door step as well. Lake superior is 1 mile away. We biked there and fished at the campground beach. Lots of Brook trout there.

Decent Enough FOR RVs ONLY

Bottom line is I think the Tourist Park is good enough for RVers, tent campers might not enjoy themselves. You’ll see why below.

The sites are very oddly sized and shaped; some are massive and some are teensy tiny, and it’s difficult to figure out the boundaries of your site when setting up. For example, I’m almost positive our neighbors ended up putting their tents on our site which was a bit awkward. Be mindful of this when booking.

The campground backs up to what I believe is the public works department for Marquette, so you will likely hear some heavy machinery noise. Again, something to keep in mind when picking your site. It didn’t really bother me in my RV, but it might bother tent campers.

Possibly the thing that bothered me most about the campground is it appears to be run primarily by teenagers and/or college kids. No campground host. We had a few noisy neighbors and the aforementioned neighbors camping on OUR site issue, and I didn’t bother to address them because I knew we’d have no one with any real sway to back us up. There was also no one enforcing arrival times, checkout times, quiet hours, etc. so it can stay loud late into the night and you’re largely relying on your neighbors to behave themselves.

What’s good about the campground is a lot of the sites have abundant shade (but not all! Again, choose carefully), there is a playground (it’s very old and possibly unsafe though), it has great access to trails, there’s a beach, and the bathrooms were impeccably clean.

It’s certainly not what I’d call a great campground, but it does the trick.

We stayed at this campground over the summer and really enjoyed our time there. There’s access to many of the local mountain bike trails directly from the campground. Overall the sites are good size and offer a decent amount of privacy. We walked around the campground and there are many sites that that we would like to try out at a different time. we also utilized the shower facilities as we have a pop up and they were clean and worked well for us. Overall we really have no complaints at this campground and will be back!

Nice, chill campground

Me and my husband stayed on the rustic site. Over all it was a good campsite and was very quiet at night. They were pretty strict on the quiet times. Very close to down town and plenty of hiking. Only complaint was they want you to use their wood, but they do close early if it is slow.

Kayakers dream!

Some sites are very large with lots of shade trees some are smaller and kinda packed together. I highly recommend the sites that face the lake. We had plenty of space and it was very peaceful in our section of the park. Bathrooms were small with only 1 shower each, but I had no wait for my shower in my section of the park. Very friendly park staff, and my site was clean and dry. Definitely going to make this an every year stop when we come up to bring our daughter back to NMU.

Clean and Friendly Campground

This campsite is great for those who dont want to be completely rustic. Theres electric at most sites and 2 bath houses on site as well. When it comes to choosing a site, you can either be tucked away in the woods, out in the open or near the lake that's on the grounds. There's a dump station and potable water near the office, along with firewood and ice for sale. In the office theres a wall of brochures for waterfalls, rock hunting, trails, biking, fishing and more! The people working there are very friendly and are always making loops to either collect trash, clean the bathrooms or inform campers of updates and incoming severe weather.

I've come here on 3 separate occasions and for usually a week at a time and I've never had a bad experience. I will mostly likely come to this site every time I'm in the Upper Penisula.

Busy & crowded park

This is a very busy campground that tends to attract mostly RV campers. It is very close to town which is convenient, and has a lot of activities within the campground. There is a playground, swimming beach, firewood for sale, picnic areas, and located on a bike path. For the most part, the park was full of families in RVs that seemed to park in every which way they found convenient. There are a few walk-in tent sites as well. We tent camp, and scored a nice site (#1) right on the water which felt a little bit separated from the mess of large RVs all over the place. The bathhouse was fairly clean, but the showers were always busy. Our site was a little on the small side and trash was left in the fire pit from previous campers. I enjoyed being right on the water, and it was a convenient location as there are not a lot of campgrounds in the nearby area. Unfortunately the park had a very hectic and crowded feeling to it than I usually prefer.

Good Location

One great thing about this park is the location and how close it is to downtown Marquette and Lake Superior. The campground can tend to feel a bit crowded in the summer and on weekends but there are not many campgrounds in town so you may have to put up with crowds for convenience. We didn’t have reservations and could not get a spot for the weekend but sites did open up during the week. The park offers great water access for fishing, swimming and paddling plus there are many other amenities like a playground, ball fields, trails, picnic areas, etc. Another plus is the paved bike path that runs by the campground and leads downtown (about a 10-minute bike ride) and along the waterfront.

There are a mix of sites from those fitting the largest of RVs to tent sites. Lots of tall trees provide shade but this can make for some crazy maneuvering with large rigs.  Be aware if you are a large RV with tow car that many sites are not long enough so be specific how long you are when you reserve a site. The park is dated and in need of some work so there are potholes in the roads and not all sites are level. Many sites in the RV hookup areas are sandy/dirt especially when campers put our patio mats and park vehicles wherever they want.  The hook-ups are not laid out conveniently on some sites which requires extra hoses and electric cords. There is WiFi in the campground but does not pick up well in all areas of the park – it just depends where you are but works well at the office. Our television antenna picked up a dozen or so channels including the major networks. Verizon 4G was strong and our hotspot worked great.

There was a sign posted mentioning there were reported break-ins and people should lock up their belongings. We found this a little disturbing because you normally don’t see this in campgrounds. It also appeared that some campers were not well-versed on camping etiquette throwing trash in fire pits, walking through others campsites, and leaving garbage all over their sites.

Great Spot!

We camped right on the lake at number #13 which is the last site towards the back of the camp ground. Even though the signs said it was full, we rolled the dice anyhow and ended up getting a cancelation site for free! The guys at the office were very nice and accommodating. Camp was clean, quiet and dog friendly. Great fishing right off the waters edge, swimming and paddle boarded the lake as well. Super close to downtown Marquette, like a 10 minute bike ride.

Campground Review: Marquette Tourist Park, Marquette, Michigan

marquette tourist park map

Introduction:

Click here to read about our criteria for campground reviews.

The Basics:

Overall Rating: 3.9/5

Price per night / Discounts: $35 / No discounts available. Rates are: $18 primitive/tent site, $30 electric, $35 full hook-up.

Campground website: Marquette Tourist Park

Our Site #: 51 - FHU

Privacy Rating (how spacious and private do the sites feel):

3/5: Our site felt pretty close to our neighbors, especially on our driver's side, but other sites felt more spacious. It certainly wasn't the worst we've seen, but it wasn't great either. You can book your own sites online and I would pay careful attention to the campground map. The map offers a pretty accurate depiction of the site spacing. Also note, our site was in the full hook up section. Most of the sites in the partial hook up section were more spacious.

Location Rating (accessibility to points of interest or to major highways):

4.5/5: This campground is located on the edge of town, right next to Northern Michigan University. There's a bike trail that runs right next to the campground that will take visitors to the lake or, in the opposite direction, into the downtown area. Jump in your car and you'll be downtown in about 10 minutes, For a city campground, the location was excellent.

Site Quality and Big Rig Accessibility Rating (utilities and accessibility of campground hook ups):

2/5: We were really unimpressed with our site's utilities. For starters, water poles in all sites are shared by neighboring units. This means that every other camper has to run their water hose under their rig to get to the water spigot inconveniently located on their patio side. Fortunately, we have a second water hose we can use for these purposes and with all 75 feet of our hose, we were able to reach the spigot. Unfortunately, our black tank rinse hose is not 75 feet long, so we couldn't rinse our tanks from our site. We ended up moving into another vacant site the morning we left in order to rinse our black tank out. Additionally, located smack dab in the middle of our patio was a gigantic fire hydrant. In addition to being an eyesore, our poor dog ended up wrapping his leash around it about 2,000 times. Finally, while most other sites were packed dirt or grass, ours was messy sand. Bottom line: avoid site 51 like the plague, and try to get a site where the water spigot is on the correct side of your rig.

Technology and Customer Service Rating (online resources, reservations, campground wifi, and staff):

5/5: I was able to book our site online and customer service was friendly and efficient.

Overall Value Rating (the overall value of the campground; was it overpriced for what it was?):

5/5: For a full hook up campground located right on the edge of a decent sized city, with easy access to the lake as well as a bike path right downtown, the price was more than reasonable.

Overall, while we were pretty unhappy with our site, we thought the larger park was nice and we would stay here again. There are plenty of trees throughout the campground, there are large fields, playgrounds, and walking trails through the woods. The park also offers easy access to the bike trail and the lake. We thought the $35 per night cost was reasonable for full hook ups in that environment.

Camping & RV Parks in Marquette

Planning a camping trip to the U.P.? From backpacking through the backcountry to close-by campsites with modern amenities, Marquette County has options to ensure everyone's a happy camper.

Marquette Tourist Park

You don’t have to travel far to take advantage of this gem. Tourist Park has tent and RV camping with modern facilities and electric hookups — and since it’s located just outside Marquette’s city limits, it feels like you’re still in the big town when you stay here.

Despite the convenient location, there’s plenty of natural beauty to go around here. Tourist Park connects to the Noquemanon Trail Network ,  North Country Trail , and the  Iron Ore Heritage Trail .

Rippling River

Rippling River Resort

Rippling River offers rustic tent campsites, glamping setups, luxury cabins, and full & electric hookups for RVs. Located along the Carp River, enjoy 57 acres of natural beauty just minutes from downtown Marquette. Within walking distance of  Marquette Mountain and NTN South Trails , this campground makes the perfect basecamp for your Marquette explorations. Hike, bike, and ski to your heart's content before a relaxing evening in the outdoor heated pool (open mid-May through mid-September) & outdoor hot tub (open year-round).

Van Riper State Park

Spread along the north shore of Lake Michigamme, Van Riper State Park is a water-lover’s paradise. The challenging stretch of whitewater on the adjacent river entices kayakers, while Lake Michigamme’s clear waters draw swimmers and anglers. The park has a solid trail system that affords excellent water and hill views, too. And the campground itself is comfy, with showers, bathrooms, water and available hookups. If you’re looking to explore the western half of Marquette County (or beyond), Van Riper is a great home base.
