Amtrak Southwest Chief in New Mexico

In addition to providing rail service in different regions of the United States, Amtrak also has 15 long-distance routes that travel overnight (sometimes multiple nights) to destinations across the country . These trains have sleeper and lounge cars , which provide additional space on a long journey. Explore the long-distance routes below to learn about the cities, states and landmarks along the way.

Note that Amtrak does not have a train route that travels all the way across the United States. Routes that travel east and west across the country either terminate in Chicago or New Orleans, at which point a transfer to another train is required. As a result, Amtrak’s cross-country trains either travel in the eastern half or the western half of the United States, which is indicated below under region.

Region : East Coast

The Auto Train travels non-stop between Virginia (near D.C.) and Florida (near Orlando) daily with the option to bring a car or other vehicle with you on the train. You must reserve space for a vehicle in order to book tickets on this route and additional fees are involved. Despite that, the Auto Train is a great vacation option if you live in Virginia, and once you arrive in Florida, it is an easy drive to Daytona Beach, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach and Orlando.

California Zephyr

Region : Cross-Country (West)

The California Zephyr is one of the top long-distance Amtrak routes. It travels through the Rocky Mountains on the journey between Northern California and Chicago. States you’ll travel through: Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. Major landmarks and destinations (besides the Rocky Mountains) include the Mississippi River, Colorado River, ski resorts, canyons and railroad museums.

Capitol Limited

Region : Cross-Country (East)

In the Eastern U.S., the Capitol Limited route connects the Midwest with Washington D.C. via Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Major landmarks and destinations include the National Mall, U.S. Capitol, Smithsonian museums, Allegheny Mountains, Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, Pittsburgh, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Lake Erie and the Chicago Loop.

The Cardinal route also travels between the Midwest and the East Coast, but near the Ohio River instead of the Great Lakes. Major destinations and landmarks include the New River Gorge, Shenandoah Valley, Allegheny Mountains, Blue Ridge Mountains, C&O Railroad Heritage Center, The Greenbrier (golf resort with casino), University of Virginia, Chicago, Indianapolis, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City.

City of New Orleans

Region : Midwest/South

City of New Orleans trains travel between New Orleans and Chicago through Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana. Memphis is a major stop along the route, and the Amtrak station is in a walkable area so you don’t even need to rent a car in order to see the sights. Other destinations and landmarks include the National Civil Rights Museum, Blues Hall of Fame, Mississippi Riverwalk, National World War II Museum and the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Coast Starlight

Region : West Coast

For a stunning West Coast train trip, book a ticket on the Coast Starlight . The route travels between Los Angeles and Seattle with stations in California, Oregon and Washington. Major destinations and landmarks include the Pacific Ocean, Burbank-Bob Hope Airport, Paso Robles wineries, Santa Clara Valley, San Francisco Bay, “Mothball” World War II Fleet, Cascade Mountains and the Columbia River.

Region : Northeast/South

The Crescent is an Amtrak route with a lot of variety. Trains start and end in New York City and New Orleans, and travel through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Major destinations and landmarks include Manhattan, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., University of Virginia, Charlotte, Clemson University, Atlanta, Birmingham and Lake Pontchartrain.

Empire Builder

Explore the Midwest, West and Northwest United States via the Empire Builder . Trains start and end in Portland, Seattle and Chicago with stops in Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. The western segment of the route is particularly scenic with travel through the Columbia River Gorge. Other major destinations and landmarks include Glacier National Park, Rocky Mountains, Cascade Mountains, Great Plains Dinosaur Museum, Mississippi River and the Wisconsin Dells.

Lakeshore Limited

As the name suggests, the Lake Shore Limited travels near the Great Lakes through the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts. Major destinations and landmarks on the route include Chicago, Boston, New York City, Cleveland (including the many museums near the station), Lake Erie, Erie Canal, New York wineries, Hudson River Valley and Adirondack Mountains.

The Palmetto Amtrak route travels between New York City and Savannah, Georgia via New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Destination highlights include the free Washington D.C. museums, Old Town Alexandria, James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library and many other museums that are in walking distance of Amtrak stations.

Silver Meteor

One of several Florida trains, the Silver Meteor travels between New York City and Miami. It uses the same tracks as the Palmetto route (see above), but then continues into Florida. Major landmarks and destinations on this route include Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Orlando, Walt Disney World , West Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale.

Silver Star

The Silver Star stops at many of the same stations as the Silver Meteor, but also travels to additional cities including Raleigh (North Carolina), Columbia (South Carolina) and Tampa. Tickets are usually cheaper on this route compared to the Silver Meteor because there isn’t any meal service, just a cafe car.

Southwest Chief

See America’s Southwest on the Southwest Chief . Chicago and Los Angeles are the cities on each end of the route, with stations in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. Major destinations and landmarks include Historic Route 66, Mojave Desert, Grand Canyon (though you’ll need to rent a car or take a shuttle there), Flagstaff art galleries, Santa Fe National Forest, Albuquerque, Kansas City, Missouri River, Mississippi River and multiple railroad museums.

Sunset Limited

The Sunset Limited Amtrak route also provides a trip through the Southwest, but via Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Trains travel between New Orleans and Los Angeles and also stop in major cities including Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Tuscon and Phoenix (shuttle required). Notable landmarks include the National World War II Museum, Houston Aquarium, George Bush Monument, Historic Sunset Station, The Alamo, San Antonio Riverwalk and many museums.

Texas Eagle

The Texas Eagle is the longest Amtrak route (and oddly presidential), with service between Chicago and Los Angeles. There are many stations in Texas, and trains also stop in Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Major destinations and landmarks include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, St. Louis Gateway Arch, Ozark Mountains, John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza, Colorado River, San Antonio Riverwalk, the Alamo, LBJ Museum and several transportation museums.

Ever since I was a kid, I remember being fascinated by the hobos that would hop the railyard fences and ride a train off into the west. Due to the immense success that The Longest Greyhound Route post received, I figured it would be appropriate to cover the Longest Amtrak Routes.

Amtrak Route Map

Amtrak Route Map ( Courtesy of Wikipedia )

Similar to the Amtrak Post, I’m going to list out what appear to be the furthest route combinations based on their route map . From my observations, it appears that these are the longest routes, in time, that you can take.

Most of these grueling trips will route you thru Chicago. The California Zephyr (Chicago – San Francisco) is the longest, single continual route, checking in at an astonishing  2,438 miles . The most popular route from New York City is the Silver Star, traveling 1,522 miles to Miami, Florida.

I’d often dreamed of going West to see the country, always vaguely planning and never taking off. –  On The Road  by Jack Kerouac

Is Amtrak for everybody? Probably not. From what I’ve read there can be delays due to cargo trains getting priority for the rails, bad food, noisy neighbors, and much more. However, just think about all those ‘issues’ and how many times you’ve encountered them in air travel. Amtrak’s blog is super useful with what to bring in order to sleep comfortably in coach on these cross country trips.

Perhaps 2016 will be the year that I take an Amtrak across country from Pittsburgh to San Diego. Or possibly one of the longest Amtrak routes mentioned above.

Know any longer routes on Amtrak? Leave a comment below and we’ll update the post.

After spending 96 hours on the longest train ride in North America, there are 5 things I wish I had brought with me and 3 that I couldn't have lived without

  • I tried my best to be fully prepared for my cross-Canada train trip, but looking back there are a few more things I wished I had packed.
  • I took a carry-on suitcase and a backpack filled with camera equipment — I had a limited amount of room.
  • The dry air and the time between meals on the train caused a lot of issues I wasn't prepared to solve.

As I prepared for my four-day, cross-Canada train trip, I read loads of blogs and reviews that all talked about what the trip would be like.

longest train trip in north america

In my planning, I made several packing lists and tried to think of everything I would possibly need. But, of course, I forgot a few seemingly obvious essentials.

longest train trip in north america

The first thing I wished I brought along with me was a reusable water bottle. There were pitchers of ice water in the communal cars, so it would have been easy for me to keep the bottle filled at all times.

longest train trip in north america

The air on the train was dry and made me more thirsty than usual. I was constantly trying to stay hydrated, and I ended up using way more plastic cups than I would have wanted to.

longest train trip in north america

I brought along Neosporin, but I wished I had a tub of Vaseline for my lips, nose, and face.

longest train trip in north america

Everything was dry and chapped, so much so that I got a nosebleed on day two.

longest train trip in north america

I also wished I had brought saline drops and would definitely stick them in my bag for next time.

longest train trip in north america

The constant blowing air and inconsistent lighting had dried out my eyes, and my first full day on the train resulted in a red, irritated left eye.

I also regretted not bringing along snacks like mixed nuts or dried fruit.

longest train trip in north america

Meals on the train are several hours apart, so I often got hungry before it was time for dinner.

longest train trip in north america

Passengers can purchase snacks like chips on the train or eat the complimentary pastries seen here, but I wished I had brought a little bag of healthier snacks.

On a more logistical level, I wish I had printed out an hour-by-hour schedule for the trip. This would have helped with planning ahead for time zone changes, which proved to be a doozy.

As a Sleeper Plus cabin traveler, I was provided with a package of earplugs — the train makes noise and the walls between cabins are thin so I heard my neighbor snoring. If you're sensitive to noise when you sleep, and you're traveling with a berth or economy ticket, you'll want to bring your own earplugs.

Similarly, if you don't want to be disturbed by the lights of a freight train passing by in the middle of the night, regardless of what sleeping arrangement you have, an eye mask would be helpful.

longest train trip in north america

The cabin I was in had a shade that I could pull down, but some of the bright light made its way around the shade. Also, I slept with the shade open most nights as I wanted to wake up to natural light in the morning.

One thing I'm so glad I had packed was a pair of flip-flops for the shower — train passengers in all classes except Prestige use a shared shower.

longest train trip in north america

If you're a germ-cautious person like me, you probably never travel without them.

longest train trip in north america

On a similar note, I'm glad I brought hand sanitizer with me. It was convenient to carry around so I didn't have to walk back to my cabin to wash my hands every time I used a railing or re-boarded the train.

Editor's note: This trip happened in October 2019, before the COVID-19 outbreak. Had our reporter traveled after the outbreak, she says she would have also brought disinfecting wipes and lots of spare face masks.

I'm also glad that I had a portable battery handy — it's built into my suitcase. Because of the portable battery, I was able to keep my phone fully charged while spending time in the community cars, which only had one strip of outlets that was far from the main seating area.

longest train trip in north america

While my cabin did have an outlet inside, travelers who didn't have a cabin had to use the communal strip of outlets located near the dining car.

longest train trip in north america

As a traveler, you may have enough time to buy something you forgot at one of the scheduled stops, but you don't know for sure when you'll be getting in.

longest train trip in north america

Some stores may be closed, and you may be limited to a candy stand or vending machine. So it's best to take the extra time packing and come prepared.

he Texas Eagle is the longest train route in the United States operated by Amtrak. Alone, the train navigates 1,306 miles daily between Chicago, Illinois to San Antonio, Texas; but three days a week, it operates with the Sunset Limited—a train route that runs between New Orleans, Louisiana to Los Angeles, California. When combined with the Sunset Limited , it runs for a total of 2,728 miles (4,390 km) from Chicago to Los Angeles, which means traveling on a train for approximately 65 hours. By the end of the trip, passengers will have visited 7 states in approximately three days: Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

Currently, the Texas Eagle runs along the same train route that the Texas and Pacific Railway built in the late 1800s from Chicago to San Antonio. The Texas Eagle got its name from another passenger train that used to ride from St. Louis, Missouri to Laredo, Texas due to a partnership that was created between Texas & Pacific Railway and Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1948. Despite the Texas Eagle being discontinued in 1971, Amtrak revived the train line in 1981 as a “re-structuring” of the Inter-American, dropping the Houston stop while one of the stops was cut back from Laredo to San Antonio. In 1982, it was announced that the Texas Eagle would combine with the Sunset Limited to make tri-weekly trips from Chicago all the way to Los Angeles.

longest train trip in north america

Today, the Texas Eagle consists of double-decker “Superliner” trains , which has Sightseer Lounges on the second floor. These are observatory rooms available to anyone, allowing passengers to get a clear view of changing the landscapes as they travel through parts of the Midwest, South, and Western part of the United States. The great part is that there is no assigned seating in these lounges, allowing anyone to not only get a perfect photo of the 630-foot-tall St. Louis Arch, but of other places and landscapes as well. By riding the Texas Eagle, passengers will go through the Land of Lincoln, across the Mississippi River, and through the Ozark Plateau to Little Rock . Afterwards, the train will go through the piney Eastern Texas woods, and go past the Rocky Mountains. will even get the chance to go by Hope, Arkansas , which is the birthplace of Bill Clinton (America’s 42nd President).

Bob Johnston, correspondent for Trains Magazine since 1991, has been on countless travels on the Texas Eagle. He recalls being able to see the Texas School Book Depository, a historic building that served as Lee Harvey Oswald’s vantage point when he assassinated JFK in 1963, passing by as the train headed West from Dallas Union Station. As the train goes along the Mississippi River, passengers can also enjoy the view of numerous boats traveling along the river. Johnston adds that as the train goes by route 66, it gives people the opportunity to view several towns along the way. Unlike other alternative modes of transportation, Johnston enjoys traveling on the Texas Eagle because it allows him to get a taste of every town he passes, allowing him to get an accurate visualization of what it would be like to live in these areas.

In times of COVID-19, trains provide a safer mode of transportation as passengers who pay for a private room can stay isolated while traveling, whereas this is not a possibility with planes. With a territory as expansive as the United States, there is so much to see and explore—and the Texas Eagle provides an opportunity for wanderlust travelers to do just that in comfort and safety.

Longest Train Journey US – See As Much As Possible on This Train Ride

Train Track during dusk - Longest Train Journey US

The United States of America is a large country across many different types of terrain as you traverse between states. Traveling by car can be exhausting for the driver, and having to deal with traffic on interstates is stressful for everyone involved.

Traveling by train is an option that not many people think about. There are several passenger train lines that run to major cities on both the West and East Coast for those looking to cover great distances while seeing some great sights along the way.

Continue reading to learn more about the train tracks that criss-cross across the US and pioneered the taming of the Wild West.

What is the longest train ride you can take in the US?

Whether you’re looking to take a family vacation without having to put hundreds of miles on your car or simply looking for a fresh start in a new city, trains are a reliable way to transport people and their luggage across long distances.

The longest train ride you can take as a passenger in the United States is the Texas Eagle route. This is technically not all one route, though, because the Texas Eagle merges with the Sunset Limited route in San Antonio, Texas, for service on to Los Angeles, California.

This merge occurs three times a week for full service from Chicago, Illinois, to LA. Otherwise, the Texas Eagle’s normal route is shorter than some of the other routes serviced by Amtrak, like the California Zephyr.

How long is the longest train ride across America?

There are two main ways to measure how long a train ride is, no matter where you are in the world – time or distance traveled.

For example, the average journey time for the Texas Eagle from Chicago to Los Angeles is reportedly 65.75 hours long, which may or may not include the time the train is stopped at a station to pick up and drop off passengers.

If you’re wondering how long that is in terms of distance, it’s 2,728 miles or 4,390 kilometers. This distance is quite different from what it would be as the crow flies, or even if you made all of the same stops but in a motor vehicle.

Through Which States Can You Pass Through while Taking the Longest Train Ride in the US?

For traveling about half of the distance of your average flight from Denver, Colorado, to London, England, you’d think that you would pass through a lot of states across the US.

However, a passenger on the Texas Eagle going all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles will only visit 7 of all 50 states across the United States of America.

This is because the train spans some of the largest states in the Midwest and West Coast. The exact states that you’ll pass through are, in order:

Some states will have multiple train stations that the Texas Eagle stops at, which is another fun way to track the progress of your journey.

What Can You See on the Longest Train Ride in the US?

While the Texas Eagle is not the most scenic train route or even in the top three (most commonly considered are the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, and Empire Builder), there are plenty of attractions to be seen along the route.

Just some of the most popular sights to stop at include:

  • Chicago Loop
  • Mississippi River
  • John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza
  • Colorado River
  • Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
  • Walt Disney Concert Hall

Keep in mind that most Amtrak trains only stop for 3-5 minutes at stations, strictly to let new passengers on the train. Existing passengers are not allowed or shouldn’t leave the train during this time.

You should also know that the Texas Eagle is rarely on time due to various limitations, so don’t plan any tight connections with other modes of transport to save money and reduce stress.

Why Should You Travel on the Longest Train Ride in the US?

Riding the Texas Eagle comes with some fun things you can boast about, aside from having been on the longest train ride in the United States.

For commuters, it is a great way to get to and from the workplace when you want to live somewhere else.

Of course, not everyone can commute to work like this at the beginning of the week and back home at the end of the week, but it is a possibility if you live and work near some of the stations along the route.

Long-distance train rides like these afford some swanky additions to tickets, like personal bedrooms that not many people can say they’ve stayed in. The same could be said about the meal options included in the price of these rooms.

The observation car of the train is also one of the best ways to appreciate the vast expanse of North American wilderness. There aren’t many other ways to get a true sense of the sheer scale of nature’s great outdoors.

When you’ve taken in everything you want personally, you can also take pictures for your Instagram, Twitter, or other social media platforms so that others can share your experience.

Final Thoughts on Longest Train Journey US

The Texas Eagle is the longest train that a passenger can legally ride across the United States and one of the longest in the entire world.

Stretching across seven different states throughout the Midwest and West Coast, the train allows people to visit many varied sights at a lower price and slower pace than some modes of transport.

If you have the time, the Texas Eagle is a great way to visit multiple states if you’re pressed for time and don’t need to see the most famous icons of the US.

Rachel Askinasi/Business Insider

Travelers I met had been dreaming about this trip forever, and now I understand why.

  • I traveled for four days on the longest train journey in North America, which takes passengers between Toronto and Vancouver .
  • The ride took a little more than 96 hours to complete, which included about 10 stops and the time we spent waiting for freight trains to pass us.
  • I was nervous about being alone on a train for so long (without WiFi!) but I discovered that my worrying was for nothing.
  • There were plenty of sights to see, people to meet, activities to participate in, and cabins to explore.
  • While it certainly wasn't as quick or convenient as flying, the train was definitely more exciting.
  • If you've got the time and you're looking for the trip of a lifetime that's more about the journey than the destination, this sleeper train is perfect.
  • The trip changed my mind about train travel - I think it's a really great option for anyone looking for a family trip , couples retreat, or solo trip .

Settlers, immigrants, and travelers used this route to move westward, contributing to the cultural mosaic of the United States. The railway facilitated the exchange of goods, ideas, and traditions, fostering a sense of national unity and identity.
  • Technological Advancements: The construction and operation of the Great Northern Railway showcased significant technological advancements. The engineering feats required to build tracks through the Rocky Mountains and other challenging terrains demonstrated the ingenuity and determination of the era. This railway was a testament to the industrial capabilities of the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • Tourism and Preservation: Over the years, the route has become a popular choice for tourists seeking to experience the United States’ historical and natural beauty. The railway passes through several national parks, including Glacier National Park, which offers some of the most stunning landscapes in North America. Preserving these routes and the stories they tell is an ongoing effort, ensuring that future generations can appreciate this significant chapter of American history.

Practical Tips For A Comfortable Journey On The Longest Train Ride In The USA

Embarking on the longest train ride in the USA is an exciting adventure, but proper preparation can make all the difference in ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your journey:

Packing Essentials:

Packing wisely is crucial for a comfortable trip. Given the varied climates you’ll pass through, packing layers is important. Bring a mix of comfortable clothing that can be easily added or removed depending on the temperature. Essentials include a warm jacket, comfortable walking shoes, toiletries, medications, and a small first aid kit. Don’t forget to pack a reusable water bottle and healthy snacks, as train food options can be limited.

Comfort and Sleep:

Whether in a coach seat or a sleeper cabin, comfort is key. For those in coach, consider bringing a travel pillow, blanket, and eye mask to make sleeping easier. Sleeper cabins provide beds, but bringing your pillow and a cozy blanket for added comfort is still a good idea. Earplugs and noise-canceling headphones can help block out the ambient noise of the train, ensuring a better rest.

Onboard Amenities:

Familiarize yourself with the amenities available on the train. The longest train ride in the USA, typically operated by Amtrak’s Empire Builder, offers a range of facilities, including dining cars, observation cars, and lounges. The dining car serves meals at set times, so plan your eating schedule accordingly. The observation car provides panoramic views and is a great place to relax and socialize.

Entertainment and Connectivity:

While the scenery is a major attraction, having other forms of entertainment can help pass the time during longer stretches. Bring books, magazines, a journal, or download movies and TV shows onto your device before you leave. Although Wi-Fi is available in some areas, it can be unreliable, so don’t depend on it for your primary entertainment. Portable chargers and extra batteries for your devices are also essential.

Health and Well-being:

Long train journeys can be taxing on your body, so it’s important to stay active and hydrated. Take advantage of stops to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. Walk through the train cars periodically to keep your circulation moving. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and try to limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you. Simple exercises and stretches can help alleviate stiffness from sitting for long periods.

Making the Most of Stops:

The longest train ride in the USA includes several stops, offering opportunities to explore different cities and landmarks. Research these stops in advance and plan activities to maximize your layovers. Whether a quick tour of a nearby attraction, a local meal, or simply stretching your legs, these stops can enhance your overall travel experience.

Embarking on the longest train ride in the USA is more than just a trip; it’s an adventure that offers a unique perspective on the country’s diverse landscapes and rich history. From the bustling streets of Chicago to the serene beauty of Glacier National Park, this journey provides an unforgettable travel experience. Whether you’re a train enthusiast or simply looking for a unique way to see the United States, this ride is a must-do. Prepare for an adventure that will leave you with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and history of the USA.

Amtrak Pacific Surfliner

The best train rides in the USA for seriously gorgeous views

From coastal routes to journeys through the mountains, these train rides spotlight all of America's most stunning scenery.

Photograph: Courtesty Amtrak

From redwood groves to sprawling desert landscapes to miles of picturesque countryside, America has no shortage of stunning scenery across its 50 states. One of the best ways to take in all the beauty is by hopping aboard a train.

While a road trip through America is always a great choice to see the country's sights, we'd argue train travel is even better. Not only is riding  on a train a timeless experience with notes of romance and nostalgia, but there's no airport stress or need to be at attention behind the wheel. Instead,  you can sit back, relax and simply stare out the window as you take it all in.

Below, you'll find the best and most scenic train rides across the country. On the West Coast, take in ocean views aboard the Coast Starlight (from Los Angeles to Seattle ) or the Surfliner, which hugs the California coast for miles. On the East Coast, the Mount Washington Cog Railway takes you through the Mount Washington area in New Hampshire. Looking for something even more adventurous? Head to Alaska  to catch the Denali Star’s 350-mile trek from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

Whether you're looking for a multi-day adventure or a route that only lasts a few hours, these train rides won't disappoint.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Best train rides in the USA

1.  rockies to the red rocks.

Rockies to the Red Rocks

Denver, CO to Moab, UT

Trip length: Two days

The first U.S. offering from luxury Canadian company Rocky Mountaineer, the ' Rockies to the Red Rocks ' trip takes passengers on a two-day ride from Denver to Moab—passing through stunning Rocky Mountains and southwest scenery along the way. Best of all? Passengers will witness all that gorgeous nature from the train's glass-dome top! That's right, we're talking about unobstructed views of some of the most gorgeous scenery in the USA . The 2024 season runs from April 14 through October 9.

2.  Coast Starlight

Coast Starlight

Los Angeles, CA to Seattle, WA

Trip length: 36 hours

Traveling by train instead puts a spin on the classic left-coast road trip. The advantages? There are zero wrong-turn fights and way more photo ops. The 1,377-mile Coast Starlight route hits the best of the West: Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, and more. On the 36-hour trip, bounce from your seat to the dining car and the 'sightseer lounge car,' where all the seats face the panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows.

3.  Pacific Surfliner

Pacific Surfliner

San Diego, CA to San Luis Obispo, CA

Trip length: 8-9 hours

If you're looking for a train ride with ocean views, you can't beat Amrak's Pacific Surfliner , which travels along a 351-mile route, many of the trip is directly along the California coast. The route starts out in San Diego before meandering up through Anaheim, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and other stops before ending in San Luis Obispo in the central part of the state.

4.  The Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon Railway

Williams, AZ to the Grand Canyon, AZ

Trip length: 2 hours 15 minutes

Sure, you may have been to the Grand Canyon already, but have you ever admired Grand Canyon country by train? On The Grand Canyon Railway , you’ll depart from Williams, Arizona, and roll through pine forests and prairies, spotting pronghorn and bald eagles, before arriving two hours and 15 minutes later at the epic South Rim. All of the historic cars of the Grand Canyon Railway have fascinating former lives and some have glass-dome ceilings for unstoppable panoramas.

5.  The Empire Builder

The Empire Builder

Chicago, IL to Portland, OR

Trip length: 45–46 hours

There is only one word to describe this journey: epic. The Empire Builder runs daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, mirroring much of Lewis and Clark’s original expedition. It passes through a greatest-hits list of must-see sites, from the urban (St. Cloud and Minneapolis) to the great outdoors (big-sky country and Glacier National Park ). The trip totals 46 hours, which warrants booking at least a roomette with seats that convert to beds so you can fully stretch out once you’ve gotten your fill of landscapes under the moonlight.

6.  The Alaska Denali Star

The Alaska Denali Star

Anchorage, AK to Fairbanks, AK

Trip length: 12 hours

This 350-mile stretch through the heart of Alaska highlights the state's beautiful, rugged wilderness. Between the birch forests, rushing rivers, caribou- and bear-spotting, views of Mt. McKinley and a stint through Denali National Park, there’s a reason this is the Alaska Railroad ’s flagship sojourn. If you can swing it, splurge on a GoldStar upgrade and take in the spectacular scenery from an open-air viewing car, with absolutely nothing between you and the wild.

7.  Skunk Train

Skunk Train

Willits, CA

Trip length: 2 hours

Hopping aboard  Skunk Train  is like traveling back in time—this historic train has been traversing Mendocino County in California since 1885. Today, you can choose from a variety of routes and experiences. The most popular journey is Wolf Tree Turn. This 16-mile route will take you through old-growth redwood groves within Noyo River Canyon, over trestle bridges, and under tunnels, ending with a stop in Crowley, where you can take in the majesty of one of the oldest trees in the area, the Wolf Tree. Enjoy snacks and beverages (including alcoholic ones) before heading back toward Willits.

8.  The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Bryson City, NC

Trip length: 3.5 hours

It may be pint-size, but Bryson City, the departure point for this rail-riding adventure, is rich with local gems like barbecue joints, a soda fountain and a brewery. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has various routes, but the four-and-a-half-hour Nantahala Gorge excursion is a scenery-serving star, snaking along the forested Nantahala River and crossing the Fontana Lake by bridge. Foliage lovers, take note: The leaves here are breathtaking during the fall.

9.  The Mount Washington Cog Railway

The Mount Washington Cog Railway

Bretton Woods, NH

Trip length: 3 hours

Like the Little Engine That Could, this antique train chugs daily up Mount Washington , depositing its passengers at the 6,288-foot peak, the highest in the Northeast. A working museum of sorts (the track dates to 1852), the Cog has the elevated feel of a gondola, only you’re in a sturdy little train. At the top, take in the sweeping views of Canada and the Atlantic on a clear day.

10.  The Napa Valley Wine Train

The Napa Valley Wine Train

Napa Valley, CA

Trip length: 3 to 6 hours on average

On this California Wine Country track, you can get intoxicated by the scenery alone: picture-perfect wineries and hills carpeted in lush rows of vines. But you’ll have a little help, what with all the vino you’ll be sipping alongside your onboard multicourse meal—both lunch and dinner are options. The roving restaurant aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train comprises a collection of vintage Pullman railcars complete with mahogany panels and brass hardware. So go ahead and soak it all up—you’re not behind the wheel, after all.

11.  California Zephyr

California Zephyr

Emeryville, CA to Reno, NV

Trip length: 6 hours 45 minutes

At more than 2,400 miles long, the  California Zephyr —stretching from San Francisco to Chicago—is Amtrak's longest route. While we don't recommend you do the route in its entirety (unless that floats your boat), we highly recommend the route stretching from the Bay Area (hop on in San Francisco or Emeryville) to the Lake Tahoe area (get off in Reno or Truckee). This scenic journey is an ideal way to get to Tahoe, beat the traffic, and take in dreamy views.

12.  The Hawaiian Railway Society

The Hawaiian Railway Society

Trip length: 1.5 hours

Train travel takes a turn for the tropical on this 90-minute jaunt across Oahu in an old sugar-cane hauler traveling at the lickety-split speed of 15 miles an hour. The ride aboard the Hawaiian Railway Society shows you a rarely-seen version of Hawaii, filled with old sisal plantations and ghost towns. Time your trip for the second Sunday of the month and you can book a seat in the elegant 1900 parlor car that was the personal ride of Oahu Railway & Land Co. founder Mr. Dillingham. It's worth noting, however, that reservations are now required to ride the train.

13.  Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango, CO to Silverton, CO

Trip length: 3.5 hours

One of the most scenic ways to experience one of the most scenic states; a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad isn’t merely photo fodder, but a full immersion into the wild, wild west. The train has been rolling between Durango and Silverton since 1882, when it was tasked with transporting silver and gold out of the San Juan Mountains. The 45.4-mile route runs in both directions along the Animas River, crisscrossing it five times, and passing by old stagecoach trails and long-deserted mining camps as it winds between 14,000ft high peaks.

14.  The Ethan Allen Express

The Ethan Allen Express

New York City, NY to Burlington, VT

Trip length: 7 hours 35 minutes

While the destination is a major draw, getting there is half the fun on this five-and-a-half-hour journey from New York City to Vermont. On the Ethan Allen Express , you’ll cruise through the postcard-perfect towns of New York’s Hudson Valley; hit Saratoga Springs, as famous for its horse races as its hot springs and snake around Vermont’s fittingly named Green Mountains, before landing in charming little-big city Rutland, with its historic downtown and one helluva farmers' market.

8 great rail journeys to take across the USA

Jan 29, 2024 • 7 min read

longest train trip in north america

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely sightseeing experience.© Alex Potemkin/Getty Images

There’s no getting around the sheer size and scale of the USA – it’s an absolute, supersized whopper – and the best way to see it all is via train.

The US has close to 3.8 million sq miles (10 million sq km) of sublime mountain ranges, parched desert, entire states engulfed in deep snow, you-gotta-go-see-it-to-believe-it cities, endless prairie land, six whole time zones and lakes so large you could lose whole countries down there. So while traveling around by plane might make sense from a convenience point of view – it’s not quite six hours to dart directly from New York to LA – there really is no better way to experience the sheer grandeur of the country than by taking one of these train vacations.

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely, nostalgic sightseeing experience, often passing through pristine landscapes inaccessible by other means. The US is rich with amazing train journeys, but the routes listed below are the cream of the crop. From California to New England ,  here are eight epic US train trips our editors have selected, taken from Lonely Planet's  Amazing Train Journeys .

A white male passenger takes in the New Mexico desert landscape at sunset from the Amtrak train.

1. The Sunset Limited

Route: New Orleans – San Antonio – Tucson – Phoenix – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1995 miles (3211 km); 2 days

Amtrak's Sunset Limited is the ultimate American railroad ride and one of its most famous train journeys: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of taking a journey across the USA, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer.

Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana ’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston , across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, pardner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight Train passes along a track through hilly terrain en route to Los Angeles

2. The Coast Starlight

Route: Seattle – Portland – Sacramento – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1377 miles (2216 km); 35 hours

Trace America’s “left coast” in all its varied splendor. The 35-hour (OK, it’s Amtrak, so maybe more) trip between Seattle and Los Angeles curves alongside crashing Pacific waves, cuts through America’s lushest agricultural land and passes below snowcapped mountains and towering redwoods. Of all the Amtrak routes, the Coast Starlight offers the most scenic variety in the fewest hours.

It’s also the only Amtrak service with a dedicated parlor car, open only to passengers who book sleepers. The parlor conjures old-time rail romance, with wood paneling and soft lighting, plus a special menu and wine-and-cheese tastings. Highlights of this train ride include dramatic sunrise perspectives on 14,179ft (4322m)  Mt Shasta , and a gorgeous midday traverse of Oregon's Cascade Range.

A train coming into a station in an idyllic leafy setting

3. Metro-North Hudson Line

Route: New York City – Poughkeepsie Distance and duration: 69 miles (111 km); 1½ hours

Depart from New York City ’s iconic beaux arts Grand Central Terminal , stopping to admire the ornate astronomical ceiling painting in the vaulted main concourse and to slurp up oysters and a martini at the famous Oyster Bar.

Then roll through Manhattan and the Bronx and into the glorious green Hudson River Valley. Hugging the eastern banks of the river, New York’s Metro-North's Hudson line travels deep into American history. The names of the stops along the way speak to the area’s origins: Native American (Ossining, Poughkeepsie); Dutch (Spuyten Duyvil, Yonkers, Cortlandt, Peekskill); English (Hastings-on-Hudson, Scarborough). It’s a land so famously beautiful an entire art movement – the Hudson River School – was once dedicated to capturing its glory. For the cost of a burger and a beer, this view can be yours for almost two hours.

A train passing through a green landscape with blue skies

4. The California Zephyr

Route: Chicago – Omaha – Denver – Salt Lake City – San Francisco Distance and duration: 2438 miles (3924km), 51 hours 20 minutes

For soaking up the scenic grandeur of the North American continent, nothing compares with Amtrak’s California Zephyr train. This classic three-day journey travels nearly 2500 miles (4000km) across prairies, deserts, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada on its way from Chicago to San Francisco. The scenery is magnificent throughout – especially when seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the lounge car – but if you can only do one section, opt for the riveting 185-mile (298km) stretch between Denver and Glenwood Springs, where the train travels through an often roadless wilderness of deep, narrow gorges near the Colorado River’s headwaters.

Near sunset, the train emerges into the majestic red rock desert of eastern Utah , then crosses overnight into the forbidding vastness of Nevada's sagebrush country, with salt flats and stark, arid mountains as far as the eye can see. Sunrise on day three reveals an entirely different desert: the blinding-white alkali flats and ghostly grey mountains near Winnemucca, Nevada. Just beyond the gambling-happy little city of Reno, the Zephyr climbs into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, then enters California’s imposing granite high country beyond the photogenic frontier town of Truckee.

The northbound Amtrak Downeaster at the train station in Brunswick as seen from the front

5. Amtrak Downeaster

Route: Boston – Portland – Brunswick Distance and duration: 145 miles (233 km); 3 hours 25 minutes

As car-free city breaks go, this train escape is hard to beat, chugging from the downtown main streets of urban Boston to Maine ’s rural greens in under four hours. That’s from the seventh most densely populated city in the US to the state with the highest percentage of forest coverage, all in less time than it takes to cook an old-style Yankee plum pudding.

Even better, every stop on the Amtrak Downeaster features historic New England cities and towns, parks and seascapes, cottage arts and crafts, world-class shopping and stellar foods fashioned from farm-and-sea-fresh ingredients.

A locomotive decorated with the image of the road runner

6. The New Mexico Rail Runner

Route: Albuquerque – Santa Fe Distance and duration: 97 miles (156 km); 90 minutes

One of America’s great unsung commuter railways, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a regional train that runs down the Rio Grande Valley , connecting the state’s largest city, Albuquerque, with its cultural and political capital, Santa Fe.

On the way it crosses the wide, high desert, giving views of arid mountains in all directions, and even passes through several of the state’s Native American tribal lands. A no-nonsense, clean and quick journey, its highlights are the sweeping views from the upper seats of the double-decker carriages. Taken as a day trip or a scenic but practical form of intra-state transport, the Rail Runner is a wonderful introduction to New Mexico ’s epic landscapes.

Empire Builder AMTRAK passenger train rolls into Whitefish, Montana, USA

7. The Empire Builder

Route: Chicago – St Paul or Minneapolis – Spokane – Portland or Seattle Distance and duration: 2764 miles (4448 km); 46 hours

The Amtrak Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle glides through Wisconsin 's woodlands, Minnesota's lake country and the North Dakota prairies en route to a western horizon swarming with snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks.

From Browning , Montana, an unforgettable 60-mile run along the southern edge of Glacier National Park leads to the park entrance at West Glacier, where nature lovers will want to break their journey before continuing to Seattle.

8. The Vermonter

Route: Washington, DC – New York City– Springfield – Essex Junction ( Burlington ) – St Albans Distance and duration: 611 miles (983 km); 13 hours 45 minutes

The Amtrak Vermonter runs once daily from Washington, DC to St Albans, VT. This is the most scenic route east of the Mississippi, especially in its northern reaches, where it snakes for four hours through the bucolic green hills and photogenic villages of rural Vermont.

Starting from the nation's capital, Washington, DC, the train runs north through one of the USA's greatest metropolises, New York City, before bowling out through Connecticut , Massachusetts and New Hampshire en route to the bucolic Vermont countryside and St Albans.

8 of the World's Longest Train Rides

By Nell McShane Wulfhart

The Trans-Siberian Express

Distance: 5,772 miles

Duration: More than six days

The longest rail journey in the world (and getting longer ) is the stuff of legend—a train ride that starts in Moscow and ends, more than six days later, in Vladivostok. Over the course of the journey, the train crosses time zone after time zone and the landscape changes constantly, from the Ural Mountains to Lake Baikal and all the steppes one could want in between. Trains depart every two days.

Eastern & Oriental Express

Distance: About 1,200 miles

Duration: Three to four days

This classic journey aboard the Belmond Eastern & Oriental Express winds through Southeast Asia from Singapore to Bangkok (and vice versa), with stops at River Kwai and the Malaysian district of Kuala Kangsar. You can choose from routes lasting either three or four days, usually stretching over the weekends. Accommodations are private and richly decorated but compact, making the trip a great option for solo travelers .

The Canadian

Distance: 2,775 miles

Duration: Three days

There’s no Wi-Fi on VIA Rail's transcontinental jaunt, so be prepared for hours of watching the scenery. Luckily, what you'll see—snow-capped Rocky Mountains, the forest of the Canadian Shield, and the rest of Canada ’s strikingly empty landscape—is breathtaking. Beginning in Toronto and ending in Vancouver , the ride is made even better by comfortable sleeper cars and the chances of seeing moose, deer, and even bears from the windows.

California Zephyr

Distance: 2,438 miles

Duration: 51 hours, 20 minutes

With each trip taking a little more than two days, this Chicago -to- San Francisco journey is the longest in the U.S. It covers 2,438 miles along the trail of the pioneers, taking in the Rockies, the canyons of Colorado’s Western Slope, and the Sierra Nevadas, but you can also jump off at Reno if you're ready to trade nature for neon.

The Indian Pacific

Distance: 2,704 miles

Duration: Four days

Over the course of four days and three nights, the Indian Pacific traverses the width of Australia , from Perth to Sydney . It stops in Adelaide, the ghost town of Cook, and Broken Hill (an artist colony that was once a mining town). From the comfort of your seat, you'll see the Australian outback as well as the forests and waterfalls of the Blue Mountains; meanwhile, off-train excursions have been added for travelers headed east.

Vivek Express

Distance: Around 2,650 miles

Duration: Approximately four days

This 80-plus-hour trip on the Vivek Express is the longest train journey in India and one of the world’s longest as well, clocking in at approximately 2,650 miles. It takes between three and four days aboard the train to arrive, traveling the length of the country at an average speed of 32 miles an hour. There are 57 stops in total, beginning in the far north at Dibrugarh and ending in Kanyakumari, at India’s southern tip (pictured).

Beijing-Guangzhou Bullet Train

Distance: 1,200 miles

Duration: Eight hours

At roughly 1,200 miles, this isn’t a competitor for the longest journey, but it takes the prize for the fastest long-distance train. This high-speed train service launched in 2012, and has cut the 21-hour trip down to eight, reaching speeds of 186 miles per hour. At this pace the scenery flies by, but there are 35 stops, most in major cities like Wuhan.

The Blue Train

Distance: 994 miles

Duration: 27 hours

Spot wild game on the savannah from the windows of South Africa ’s famously decadent Blue Train, which crosses the country in just over a day. Traveling from Pretoria to Cape Town , the train is more like a fast-moving luxury hotel, with butler service, Cuban cigars, and gourmet dinners. But the main attraction is the view of the country’s spectacular farmlands, forests and vineyards.

The 5 Best Luxury Trains in the U.S.

See the country in style from the Grand Canyon Railway to the Rocky Mountaineer.

longest train trip in north america

For nearly 200 years, railroads have ferried passengers and freight all across the United States, transforming them from just a practical form of transportation to the pinnacle of luxury for wealthy Americans by the turn of the 20th century. But when jetliners hit the scene , rail travel languished.

These days, slow travel is making a comeback, with travelers delighting in the romantic nostalgia of elegantly furnished train cars complemented by fine dining. And while the U.S. has been, admittedly, rather slow to reclaim luxury train travel — particularly compared to the rest of the world — there are a growing number of elegant rail experiences to be found across the country. Here are five of the best experiences for luxury train travel in the U.S.

Rocky Mountaineer

In August 2021, Canadian railway company Rocky Mountaineer debuted its first-ever U.S. route, Rockies to Red Rocks . It's a long-in-the-making two-day journey between Denver and Moab, Utah, which includes an overnight stay in Glenwood Springs, Colorado . The glass-domed cars offer passengers exceptional views of the mountains, canyons, rivers, and hoodoos along the journey. Passengers enjoy multi-course meals, either in their seats or in a designated dining room, depending on ticket class. For those who book the higher class of service, SilverLeaf Plus , there's a lounge car with a bar and an exclusive outdoor observation deck.

The Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon is a must-visit destination, so why not arrive in style? Instead of sitting in traffic to enter the national park, take the Grand Canyon Railway for a leisurely adventure. The train departs from the depot in Williams, Arizona, some 60 miles south of the canyon itself, then travels for two-and-a-half hours through the desert to reach Grand Canyon Village, right next to the South Rim. For the most luxurious experience, be sure to book the Luxury Parlor or Luxury Dome class of service — the adults-only cars have private bars and open-air platforms.

Napa Valley Wine Train

Since 1864, the Napa Valley Wine Train has been carrying oenophiles through the eponymous California wine region . Though it originally traveled between Vallejo and Calistoga, the train now makes a three-hour, round-trip journey between downtown Napa and St. Helena. There are a few different itineraries ; most include a multi-course gourmet meal served in sophisticated historic railway cars, and some rides include stops and tastings at various wineries. The most popular car on the train is the Vista Dome , a Pullman from 1952, where you'll dine in a glass-domed car with nearly uninterrupted vineyard views.

Alaska Railroad

Connecting Seward and Fairbanks via 470 miles of track, the Alaska Railroad provides scenic excursions through the state . Book the GoldStar Service for a more upscale experience — it's offered onboard the Denali Star train, a 12-hour itinerary connecting Anchorage and Fairbanks, and the Coastal Classic Train, which connects Anchorage and Seward. The service provides guests with spacious seats in a domed car, access to an outdoor viewing platform, meals in the dining car, and access to a private bar.

Strasburg Railroad

A ride on Pennsylvania's Strasburg Railroad might not be long — each journey lasts only 45 minutes. The railroad itself, however, has a long history. In fact, it's the oldest continuously operating railroad in the country, founded in 1832. For a luxurious little joy ride, book one of the historic first-class cars , which includes Marian (the private-hire President's Car); the Parlor Car, which has tables and sofas; or one of the two Lounge Cars, which are outfitted with velvet-upholstered captain's chairs. Snacks and beverages are available during each ride, but there's also a special wine-and-cheese experience for adults on select Friday and Saturday evenings.

4 Bucket List Train Trips to Take in North America

Lounge cars are the ultimate way to skip airport lines.

The weathered, silver passenger train roared into Orlando Station. A few minutes behind schedule, its passing cars made a merciful wind in the staggering Florida heat as a few ambling passengers made their way out of the station and began to board.

There were no lines, and there was no wait.

As I joined them, a conductor scanned my ticket and instructed me to throw my bag in an overhead bin. If I fell asleep, he said, he’d wake me up at my stop—such is the stress-free nature of train travel in the United States.

Five hours later, I found myself and my bag eating tacos on South Beach.

Each day, Amtrak delivers passengers to destinations in 46 states and three Canadian provinces, running over 21,000 miles of steel. With more than 500 destinations, America’s forgotten rail system offers an endless buffet for travelers, but at least three routes should stand atop any vagabond’s bucket list. And, they’re joined by a Canadian cousin that might top them all.

Chicago to New Orleans on City of New Orleans

Start to finish, this route travels more than 900 miles from the shores of Lake Michigan to the Crescent City. The journey lasts about 19 hours, but why hurry when you can soak up some of America’s most legendary music towns along the way? The train itself became legendary in 1985 thanks to a hit single by Willie Nelson, a cue for you to pay homage to its musical pitstops.

The City of New Orleans traces a line from the electric blues of Chicago to the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll in Memphis, and on towards the mecca of jazz in New Orleans. Amtrak Vacations offers excursions in each city, but you can make your own way by purchasing segment tickets along the route. Full route rates start at around $130.

Hot stops for music lovers: Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago; Sun Studios in Memphis; The Spotted Cat Music Club in New Orleans.

San Francisco to Denver on California Zephyr

The California Zephyr runs from San Francisco all the way to Chicago, but you can maximize your time onboard by hopping off in Denver. The one-day, 11-hour journey is one of the most breathtaking in America, launching passengers from the Pacific coast through the Sierra Nevada mountains, the deserts of Utah, and on to Denver through the Rocky Mountains. One-way rates start at just over $100.

Passengers searching for a layover can stop in Salt Lake City or Reno, while adventurers making a weekend of the journey can hop a one-way flight back to the Bay Area for less than $100.

Hot stops for photographers: Baker Beach in San Francisco; Saltair in Salt Lake City; Colorado National Monument in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Los Angeles to Seattle on Coast Starlight

longest train trip in north america

Amtrak’s direct service from the City of Angels to Seattle began in 1971 and hasn’t stopped since. Today, the Coast Starlight runs the 1,300-mile route daily, skirting the California coast to San Luis Obispo, before ducking inland and winding its way through the volcano-laden Cascade Mountains of northern California, Oregon and Washington. And with rates starting at under $100, this west coast adventure is a bargain.

Hot stops for foodies: Master Ha Korean Restaurant in Los Angeles; Basilisk in Portland; Saigon Vietnam Deli in Seattle.

Vancouver to Banff on Rocky Mountaineer

Canada’s most popular train route won’t leave you with the same elbow room you’ll get south of the border, but it will leave you with a completely new perspective on the Rocky Mountains. The Canadian Rockies are even more magnificent and imposing than their American counterparts, highlighted by the hiker’s paradise of Banff National Park.

Departing from Vancouver, rail passengers can soak in an endless landscape of peaks on the two-day trek to Banff. The only downside? Prices for the sojourn start at more than $900—almost nine times what some of its U.S. brethren run for.

Hot stops for hikers: Crown Mountain near Vancouver, British Columbia; Banff National Park, Banff, Alberta.

The Adirondack Line by Amtrak is one of the best long-distance train trips for New Yorkers looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, if only for a few hours. Departing from New York City, the Adirondack rail tour stops in Albany and whisks passengers off to Montreal. Along this route, as the New York City skyline starts to fade, Adirondack riders are transported through the renowned Hudson Valley wine country, past the shimmering shores of Lake Champlain, alongside the Adirondack Mountains, and onward.

And for those headed southbound, the Adirondack makes getting to New York City and connecting routes to Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., a breeze. With standard seating, the Adirondack Café Car, and the usual amenities, the Adirondack is the perfect little getaway train to see all the beauty that awaits in upstate New York and beyond.

Yellowstone National Park Getaway

Though this is a shorter journey of roughly 360 miles round trip, Amtrak's Yellowstone National Park Getaway is a wonderful way to experience one of the U.S.'s favorite national wonders, unspoiled wilderness, and more. A five-day excursion by train that transports passengers from Salt Lake City in Utah to Yellowstone National Park. This route is littered with picturesque mountain and countryside vistas. It gives parkgoers ample time to check out all of the great attractions in Yellowstone, including Old Faithful, an abundance of wildlife, and the enchanting Isa Lake on the Continental Divide.

Travelers will disembark and stay at hotel accommodations within the park for roughly two days. A sightseeing tour via the park's Lower Loop is also a part of this Amtrak package. After spending ample time in Yellowstone National Park , this once-in-a-lifetime experience takes you back to Crossroads of the West (Salt Lake City). This package includes a two-night stay in Salt Lake City as well.

Southwest Chief

The Southwest Chief is just one more incredible long-distance train trip that departs from Chicago and ends in Los Angeles. What makes this rail tour a little different is that the Southwest Chief heads southwest, as its name implies. With stops in Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Flagstaff in Arizona , passengers get a chance to appreciate a slightly different section of the U.S. map.

A 40-plus hour journey covering more than 2,250 miles is what awaits Southwest Chief riders. But, undoubtedly, the scenery alone here makes this train getaway totally worth it. So if you have been dreaming of the plains of Iowa, vibrant colored southwestern mountain ranges, vistas of the Painted Desert, and the Red Cliffs of Sedona by chance, then purchase a ticket for this impressive two-story superliner now. The Southwest Chief has ample onboard accommodations for singles, families, friends, and large groups. Nevertheless, booking in advance and thoroughly planning for this particular train trip is highly recommended.

Great America Majestic Landscape

Travelers looking for a true coast-to-coast rail tour needn't look any further than the Great America Majestic Landscape by Amtrak. Departing from New York City, the Great America Majestic Landscape train trip is a lovely way to marvel at all the beauty of the U.S. without leaving any stone unturned. With its final destination being San Francisco , it is unsurprising that this is a 12-plus-day excursion.

The scenic highlights include the Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Canyon, Napa Valley, Sonoma, and ample opportunities to enjoy famous landmarks like the New York skyline, the Chicago Navy Pier, and more. This multi-day train adventure includes sightseeing tours in various cities, hotels, and onboard accommodations. Ultimately, whether you want to see all of America's stunning landscape here or prefer to start slow with any of the other railway tours on this list, there is nothing like traveling by train — so get out there and take a long-distance train trip or two in the U.S.

Before We Wrap Up, Long-Distance Train Travel Tips

For first-timers or passengers that have only experienced short train trips, there are several helpful tips to make your journey more carefree. Much like any other form of travel, preparation is key. In addition to having the necessary train travel essentials in tow, newbie passengers should take the time to draft a pre-departure checklist. Doing so lets you ensure you have important travel documents, medications, and other items handy on the day of departure. Speaking of packing, if you do not plan on checking luggage, only pack what you can carry.

Other train travel must-haves include dressing comfortably for your longer-than-normal journey and booking onboard accommodations in advance for overnight and cross-country rail tours. It also never hurts to plan for delays and download the necessary apps to streamline your adventure. And for the best views while onboard, westbound travelers should be on the right side of the train, and eastbound travelers should be on the left to avoid missing out on gorgeous scenery.

Today Is the Longest Day of the Year in the Northern Hemisphere

We have Earth’s off-kilter tilt to thank for the summer solstice, as well as the different seasons.

A person in silhouette raises their arms in the air, looking almost as if they're grasping the sun, framed on three sides by the monoliths of Stonehenge at sunset.

By Katrina Miller

On Thursday, everyone in the northern half of our planet will experience the summer solstice. It’ll be the longest day of the year north of the Equator, and it is the scientific start of summer.

Earth has a solstice every six months, in June and in December. Leading up to the summer solstice, the sun appears in a higher spot in the sky at the same time each day until it reaches its maximum point.

After the summer solstice, the days will get shorter. The sun will appear lower in the sky each day until the winter solstice, on Dec. 21.

What time is the summer solstice this year?

According to the National Weather Service , the summer solstice will occur on Thursday at 4:51 p.m. Eastern time. This is the moment during the day when the sun reaches its most northern point in the sky during the year.

Why do we have solstices?

The sun’s height in the sky each day changes because Earth spins on an axis that is tilted 23.5 degrees away from vertical. This means that depending on the time of year the hemispheres lean either toward or away from the sun.

This is what gives Earth its seasons: When the northern half of the planet leans toward the sun, it experiences summer; at the same time, the southern half of the planet leans away from the sun, and is in winter. It is a mystery why Earth is angled this way, though some astronomers believe that its tilt paved the way for life to exist .

In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice happens when Earth’s tilt toward the sun is greatest. Despite this, the hottest temperatures of the year usually occur a few weeks later , in July or August, because it takes time for the sun’s rays to warm our planet.

Do other planets in our solar system have solstices?

Any planet that is tilted will have solstices. According to NASA , every planet in our solar system has an axial tilt, but some are more pronounced than others.

Venus and Jupiter have only slight leans, around 3 degrees, while Mercury, at 0.03 degrees, is barely slanted at all. On the other hand, Uranus is oriented a whopping 97.8 degrees from vertical, causing one of its poles to point directly at the sun at times. That extreme tilt causes it to have some of the most dramatic seasons in our solar system.

Saturn and Neptune both have tilts close to Earth’s. So does Mars, at 25.2 degrees, although the red planet’s tilt has shifted dramatically over millions of years .

How do people celebrate the summer solstice?

Every year, people around the world ring in the June solstice with midsummer bonfires, festivals and — for those living above the Arctic Circle — midnight sun celebrations . At the other end of the world, scientists living in Antarctica throw their annual midwinter feast to commemorate the longest, darkest night on the continent.

Others travel to ancient ruins, like Stonehenge in England or the Temple of the Sun in Peru, to greet the solstice sun the way ancient peoples once did.
