Travel expert and television host Kellee Edwards is coming to claim her crown as the most interesting person in the world.

Move over Dos Equis guy, travel expert and television host Kellee Edwards is coming to claim her crown as the most interesting person in the world. She has certainly made a strong case for herself.

Edwards has conquered everything from swimming with whale sharks in the Georgia Aquarium, zip-lined through the Mayan jungles in the Yucatán Peninsula, gone dog sledding in remote Alaska, and climbed the active volcano Mount Pacaya in Guatemala.

Her extensive travels have taken her to over 50 countries so far, including parts of North and West Africa, Asia, South and Central America, Europe, and the UAE. To add to that laundry list of accolades, Edwards is a licensed pilot and advanced open water scuba diver, with plans to add a motorcycle license to the arsenal.

In 2018 Outside Magazine made it official by naming Edwards ‘The Most Interesting Woman in the World.’ It’s an apt title for the woman who has described herself as a real-life “Bond girl, Lara Croft, and 007.”

But most people recognize Edwards as the host of the Travel Channel’s Mysterious Islands , where she journeys to the most remote lands in the world that the general population has probably never even heard of. This feat earned her the distinction of becoming the first Black woman to host a show on the network. She also co-hosted the channel’s The Trip 2018 .

Being the first to accomplish something in any field is arduous and Edwards’s path was littered with obstacles, most notably the fact that no one in the television travel industry had ever looked like her before.

“I heard, ‘Wow, I love you; you’re doing amazing things. We don’t have anyone who’s doing any of this, but we don’t know how our audience will take to you’, she told Newsweek in 2020. “They didn’t know if people will understand because there is a mold of the older white male in the space. And so that was the obstacle, that was the frustration.”

Edwards has always been unapologetic about her identity as a Black woman in a typically white male environment. She knows that it comes with premature judgments and misconceptions which is why she is always mindful of representing her community positively with every activity and interaction.

“As a Black woman, I have to think about a few things. I have to think about my safety because of my gender, my safety because of my race, and my presence, period. That’s why I learned to do so many things. I choose to be strong not because I am, but because I don’t have a choice. I don’t have a choice when I traverse this world to show up weak because it could cost me. And I refuse to let anyone stop me from experiencing what is also mine.”

A Travel Star is Born

View this post on Instagram A post shared by K E L L E E E D W A R D S (@kelleesetgo)

Edwards caught the travel bug from her parents. Her earliest memories include road trips and a move to San Bernardino, California from the south side of Chicago where she recalls the profundity of the mountainous landscape and desert. Edwards credits her father with exposing her to new experiences like camping and swimming. Her mother was equally as influential in encouraging her wanderlust, taking her daughter to Hearst Castle in San Luis Obispo County where she was blown away by the concept of royalty.

She shared in a radio interview earlier this year, “When I started to look at the world and watching Nat Geo and Travel Channel and all this, I’m like, oh, I should go to these places.”

However, Edwards never set foot on an international flight until after her college graduation from California State University Fullerton where she obtained a BA in Communications with an emphasis in journalism. Her parents couldn’t afford the usual spring break excursions but as she got older Edwards felt compelled to travel. Her first solo trip was to Bangkok, where she recounts having feelings of anxiety but also exhilaration. She had gotten a taste and was now hungry for much more.

As with most success stories, the path isn’t always a straight line. Edwards initially cut her teeth in entertainment journalism, patrolling red carpets and doing press junkets. Eventually, she realized that this was not her cup of tea and started seeking out an avenue that would feed her soul.

Her thoughts turned to travel, but she wasn’t sure this was even an option.

“Is there such a thing as a travel journalist?” she questioned.

Determined to carve out a new career, Edwards set out to find the answer. Enter YouTube, where she started creating content, seeking brand partnerships and making a name for herself. This is how Kellee Set Go , her one-woman adventure travel show, was born. It wasn’t long before Edwards started drawing the attention of travel industry executives and the Travel Channel came calling.

The rest, as they say, is history. In this case, Black history.

“I had a real defining moment once I realized that me having a show on the Travel Channel was really happening. I was filming a commercial that airs on the network right now. I was in St. Croix. And the line was, ‘Hi I’m Kellee Edwards, you’re watching Mysterious Islands only on Travel Channel.’ Even right now I get chill bumps from it,” she shared in an emotional video . “Because it was the first time I had ever said my name, the name of my show, and Travel Channel in one sentence. And it made it so real. All those moments that seem like doubt and failure were worth it.”

Pushing Boundaries

Edwards is not the type to rest on her laurels, so naturally she sought out a new challenge, flying, but for a very specific reason.

“When I wanted to break into the world of adventure travel television, I was looking at everyone up there: Anthony Bourdain, Andrew Zimmern, Bear Grylls, Jeremy Wade, Josh Gates—all these badass people exploring the world in their own different ways. And I think, well, everyone’s getting on a plane to go to these far flung places. But no one’s flying themselves there. I need to become a pilot,” she explained of her motivation to fly in an interview .

With all these miles logged under her belt and a resume that would put several explorers to shame, it might come as a surprise that the seemingly fearless Edwards wasn’t always so courageous. As she tells it, travel became a conduit to conquering what she dreaded most which ironically included heights and the ocean. But tackling the seemingly impossible is also her general approach to life.

“A lot of things scare me, but the woman I stare at in the mirror each day says, “That’s the way you want to go out? Afraid?!” And I always respond, “Nope! Not today!,” she said in a self-penned piece . “I take everything I do in stride and for the moment. And this, my friends, is how I get through my life of adventure. I show up and force myself to often deal with the presented opportunities at hand. Truth be told, if I actually thought about all the things I’ve actually accomplished in life, I could easily come up with a million reasons why I should take the risk. Helen Keller said it best: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”

Kellee Edwards' Clever Tip For Nervous, Beginner Kayakers

T ravel expert and TV host Kellee Edwards loves to use her platform to encourage people to get out of their comfort zone and visit places they've only ever dreamed of. Her extreme adventure activities are the stuff of legends, like the time she went scuba diving in the Red Sea (and nearly drowned!), but Edwards also likes to encourage her viewers to embrace the smaller triumphs in travel, like conquering your fears and simply trying something new. "Everyone thinks that I'm fearless," she told Madame Noire . "I'm not fearless. I just choose to fear less. I do everything scared. But once I've done it, it's like, oh shoot, I survived. That was awesome!"

One common travel fear is the fear of water, especially when in remote areas. Sure, taking an epic kayak adventure through the Everglades or the Amazon River might seem amazing in theory, but what happens if you end up in the water, injured, and miles from the nearest hospital? That is a common fear, and something that Edwards says can be conquered if you start small. "For people who aren't necessarily comfortable kayaking in a river or a lake outdoors, I love kayaking in cities," she told the outlet. This might be the hack nervous, beginner kayakers are looking for.

There Are So Many Opportunities To Enjoy Urban Kayaking

They say you have to crawl before you can walk, and when it comes to nervous kayakers, you have to stick to cities before you can kayak the Amazon River. That's the advice travel expert Kellee Edwards gave. After listing off great cities that offer kayaking opportunities, like the Hudson River in New York City, she points out to Madame Noire that you can not only enjoy an unblemished view of the cityscape, you can also "drop your kayak and be back in your Uber or your car within 10 minutes. But you still connect with nature by being on a body of water. And I love kayaking for that."

If you don't know where to start, USA Today has got you covered. The outlet published a list of 16 different cities to experience urban kayaking with incredible cityscapes to boot, and they include San Antonio, Chicago, Buffalo, Nashville, and more. But our favorite has to be the kayaking tours in Saint Augustine, Florida, where you can float by Castillo de San Marcos, a 327-year-old masonry fort built by the Spanish. Outside of the U.S., some great urban kayaking spots include Vancouver, B.C., Toronto, Ontario, and Dublin, Ireland.

Hiring An Urban Kayaking Guide Can Help Ease You Into It

Another safety aspect that comes with booking an urban kayak experience (compared to a remote, rural one) is the team of experts that can accompany you. Urban Paddle is a kayaking company that operates in New York City, and they shared on their official Instagram page a Google Review they received, where the patron gushes about all the safety features included for nervous first-timers that included a detailed briefing, two boats with the group at all times so no one is left behind, and even words of encouragement to ensure everyone was having a good time and felt safe.

For Kellee Edwards, kayaking has become such a place of comfort and a sanctuary that she even uses it to write in her journal. In this video posted to her official Instagram , we see her kayaking somewhere quiet, then pulling out her journal while surrounded by nature and jotting down her thoughts. In the caption, she writes that she enjoys doing this because "fresh air can help raise oxygen levels in your brain, which increases serotonin levels," and journaling helps regulate her emotions. We love the pairing of these two activities, proving that once you're comfortable in a kayak, anything is possible.

Kellee edwards, ratings & reviews, interesting perspective.

Episode on Black Travelers would have been more interesting if it had included Blacks who identify as African-Americans rather than as Africans. I believe the travel experiences are different.

Great Interview with Captain Kate!

Always love hearing interviews with the Captain. I would love it if you could get a follow-up since the return to sailing! We sailed on Celebrity Equinox last month and will be on the Edge in November for the second time unfortunately missing Captain Kate again😔. I felt safer on the ship then I do on land! Celebrity is doing a fantastic job!! Forever cruiser

Wow. What racist stereotyping garbage.

I know T&L and Condé Nast love to push woke (Marxist) propaganda, but season 2 is downright racist and full of angry stereotyping. Every one of us is unique, so why try to divide us into groups based on mostly immutable characteristics, such as race, and then listen to guests collectively hate on other supposed groups (who are not really groups) who have zero responsibility for their ancestral histories. All ancestral histories are full of good and bad stories But these stories are not us today. Why not try to unite us around good human values and delightful experiences instead?

Black Travel Guide: A Look at Orlando’s Must-See Attractions With Travel Expert Kellee Edwards

Join our favorite travel host Kellee Edwards as she explores Orlando, Florida’s must-see attractions on this whirlwind tour of unique experiences that this diverse, welcoming city has to offer.

Whether you’re down for a ziplining adventure over a gator park, urban paddleboarding with downtown views, or craving something to satisfy that sweet tooth, Orlando has you covered for that perfect vacation.

Ready to kick-start your own Orlando adventure? Don’t miss out on these one-of-a-kind experiences when you plan your next getaway.

Chocolate Kingdom

Kellee’s first stop is Chocolate Kingdom to sample some artisanal sweets. Everything at this charming chocolaterie is made fresh and on-premises, from timeless treats like chocolate covered pretzels to the unexpected: potato chips smothered in chocolate, their best seller. “Sweet, salty, that combination is so amazing. People fall in love with it,” says Edgar Schaked, Chocolate Kingdom CEO and a third-generation chocolate maker. This confectionary boutique is more than a chocolate shop, it’s an experience. Join the Factory Adventure Tour and learn how chocolate is made, then create your own chocolate bar. Stock up on sweet treats at Chocolate Kingdom.

The District GastroBar

Next up is The District GastroBar, a Black-owned establishment in the heart of downtown Orlando. Steeped in Black history, The District offers a unique gastronomic experience with artisanal libations and enchanting atmosphere. Kellee chats with The District co-owner KC Preston over New Orleans shrimp pasta. “Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Count Basie, a lot of them played right here on this corner,” Preston says. Soak in the modern speakeasy vibes over craft cocktails or go all out for a bottomless brunch. Their menu has something for everyone. Enjoy food, drinks and ambiance at The District GastroBar.

Epic Paddle Adventures

Next, Kellee tries urban paddleboarding with Epic Paddle Adventures in downtown Orlando. As a professional adventurer and TV host, the travel maven was right in her element on the water. Choose from a variety of paddleboarding adventures, like the Bioluminescence Sunset Tour, Wildlife Paddle Adventure, and even Paddleboard Yoga & Meditation. This is a great way to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Plus, it’s a great core workout. Hit the water with Epic Paddle Adventures.

Last but certainly not least, Kellee hits Gatorland, Orlando’s first theme park billed as “the alligator capital of the world.” This unique park offers the ultimate full-throttle gator experience, from their famous off-road gator adventure to the Screamin’ Gator Zipline, where (you guessed it) you’ll be able to fly high over Gatorland’s star attractions including the Alligator Breeding Marsh. Or, if you’re not keen on heart-pumping thrills, you could also check out their petting zoo which features animals of the fuzzier and less terrifying variety. Kellee does it all at this one-of-a-kind Orlando attraction. Get up close and personal with gators at Gatorland.

History of Krasnoyarsk Krai

The first state in the territory of southern Siberia appeared in the 4th-3rd centuries BC. Ancient Chinese chronicles called it Dinlin. Around 201 BC, Dinlin state was defeated by the Hunnu (the ancestors of the Huns) - an ancient Turkic nomadic people who inhabited the steppes to the north of China from 220 BC until the 2nd century AD. To protect the country against their raids Qin Shi Huang built the Great Wall of China.

After the defeat of Dinlin, the Turkic tribe of the Kyrgyz settled in Khakass-Minusinsk depression. In 840, Kyrgyz state destroyed Uighur Khanate and extended its power in Tuva and Mongolia. At the beginning of the 13th century, the Kyrgyz were conquered by the Mongols.

Since that time, the Kyrgyz ceased to play an independent role in the Asian international politics. But in the Minusinsk Hollow, the surrounding area of Krasnoyarsk and other northern territories, the Kyrgyz were the most powerful force and resisted the Russian Cossacks who were engaged in the conquest of Siberia. In the end they could not prevent the incorporation of these territories into Russia.

More historical facts…

Until 1629, the territory of present Krasnoyarsk krai was part of a vast region with its center in the town of Tobolsk. In the 1760s-1780s, Siberia began to be used as the main place of exile. In 1822, Yenisei gubernia (province) was established after the separation of Siberia into Western and Eastern. In 1863, 44,994 exiles lived in the Yenisei province representing 1/7 of the total population of the province. According to the 1897 census, 570,200 people lived in the province.

On December 7, 1934, Krasnoyarsk Krai was formed. The borders of the region were almost the same as of Yenisei gubernia of the Russian Empire. In 1991, Khakassia Autonomous Oblast being originally part of the region became a separate subject of Russia - the Republic of Khakassia.

On January 1, 2007, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Taimyr (Dolgano-Nenetsky) Autonomous Okrug and Evenky Autonomous Okrug were united in a single region called Krasnoyarsk Krai, the autonomous okrugs became Taimyr (Dolgano-Nenetsky) and Evenky districts.
