Enschede - Explore the innovative, green city

The innovative and quirky nature of Enschede makes it a city not to be missed when visiting the Netherlands. The largest city in the province of Overijssel is surrounded by greenery. Its past in the textile industry and its entrepreneurial character are still tangible, which makes Enschede a creative place full of special locations.

Experience Enschede like a Tukker

Oude Markt Enschede

Enschede is the place for technology, innovation and creativity. In every domain you can imagine. It is home to 50-60 new start-ups every year. For example, the companies Thuisbezorgd and Booking.com once began here as start-ups. Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible without Wi-fi, which is quite the coincidence since this wireless network was devised by an alumnus of the University of Twente in Enschede. The city is bursting with creative incubators and ideas, culminating in the annual GOGBOT Festival , where music, art, media and technology come together.

Enschede is above all a vibrant city. It's a favourite destination for the Dutch and Germans to go shopping and the terraces are always full on the best hospitality square in the Eastern Netherlands: the Oude Markt . And if you like shopping , then you’re in luck! Enschede has hundreds of local shops and chain stores where you can shop till you drop. The second-hand shopping route takes you along fantastic addresses and give you the opportunity to score a sustainable second-hand outfit.

Oude Markt Enschede

Nature is always just around the corner in Enschede. There are 10 city parks located throughout the city, each of them a green oasis with its own special charm. You can find the oldest public park in the Netherlands in Enschede. And there’s no better home for it. And when you leave the hustle and bustle of the city centre, you will find beautiful country estates and rural areas along the city's outskirts. Wherever you go, you are constantly surrounded by greenery.

Family enjoying the city park in Enschede

Enschede is home to a special sort of people, called the Tukkers. 'Act normal, that’s already crazy enough' is the philosophy here. But even more famous in Twente is the so-called concept of 'Noaberschap'. Noabers (aka: neighbours) are there for each other, that's just the way it is. This sounds like something to be rather proud of but the Tukker is rather modest by nature. They see noaberschap , being there for each other, as a normal part of everyday life. So modest are they here that they do not even boast about their beautiful city of Enschede. Their praise more or less extends to: 'Enschede is quite a pleasant city, you know.' This could be one of the reasons why Enschede is still a fairly undiscovered city in the Netherlands.

A green visit to Enschede

More and more sustainable venues and events are popping up in Enschede, each contributing to a better world in its own way. From vegetarian or vegan hotspots and second-hand shops to restaurants that cook with locally sourced ingredients. But in fact, you can find lovely green spaces all over Enschede. For instance, there are many hidden courtyard gardens and terraces such as Bardot or the courtyard garden of Rijksmuseum Twenthe .

Bardot Enschede

Enschede is widely admired for the way old industrial factory buildings have been transformed. Coberco's old milk hall is the perfect example. It has been converted into a trendy spot that preserves the old character of the building and is currently home to the unstaffed hotel Urban Hotel Moloko , Café Coberco and a large supermarket that sells all kinds of specialities from local and regional producers under the 'Ons Noaberschap' label. And don’t forget the Museumfabriek. This museum tells you all about how nature, culture, science and technology affect each other. And how fitting that this museum is located in the Rozendaal family's former textile factory?

Even though Enschede is located close to the German border, it’s easily accessible by public transport from all corners of the Netherlands. For example, you can get a train from Utrecht and be at any of the city's three stations within 1.5 hours. There are plenty of buses here to take you to all the cool places in the city. But you can, of course, also do that last bit yourself. Simply rent a bike at Budget Bikes Hoeve or opt for an OV public transport bike (for OV chip card holders only). And if you're looking for a slightly faster travel option, you can rent a shared e-scooter in the city.

With its many cultural institutions, Roombeek is a cultural hotspot within Enschede, but it’s also a green one; three interconnected parks run through the neighbourhood like a lovely green oasis.

On 13 May 2000, Roombeek suffered a fireworks disaster . It was a huge tragedy with many victims. The blast destroyed 42.5 hectares of the city. Roombeek was rebuilt according to the wishes and ideas of more than 3,000 residents, transforming it into a neighbourhood with a history as well as future value. The textile past was brought back and acknowledged by preserving industrial heritage, while Lasonderbleek (the memorial park) includes the concrete foundation of the fireworks factory and a memorial.

Roombeek is known for its high-quality architecture and beautiful public spaces. It is characterised by a bold mix of traditional and modern. Follow the Roombeek Walking Route and admire the extraordinary houses and buildings, or do the guided walk to discover even more of Roombeek's stories. If you add a visit to Roombeek Culture Park to your walk, you will find several cultural institutions close together: the Museumfabriek, Rijksmuseum Twenthe, and Tetem . Tetem is one of the few places in the Netherlands where digital culture plays a leading role in its programming. This special combination of art, culture and architecture makes a visit to Roombeek a unique experience.

VISIT ENSCHEDE

Hello there, welcome in enschede.

Enschede, or Eanske as the locals say, is a municipality and a city in the eastern Netherlands near the German border. The municipality of Enschede consisted of the city of Enschede until 1935, when the rural municipality of Lonneker, which completely surrounded the city, was annexed after the rapid industrial expansion of Enschede which began in the 1860s and involved the building of railways and the digging of the Twentekanaal.

Culture always has been very important in Enschede. The textile tycoons stimulated workers to join one of the local clubs, to make music or theater. Some of the marching bands are founded in that time. Musea and studios tell the 'Twente' story, the cultural and historical herritage the area as well as modern art.

Enschede has a lot of exciting events for everybody. Summertime events like free concerts and fleamarkets, skating and a Circusfestival in the winter, various art exhibits and festival throughout the year, indoor and outdoor music in every possible genre and some international known sportevents.

It is the largest city of the Twente region (a former center of textile industry), and also of the Overijssel province. Enschede was designated the greenest town in the Netherlands in 2003.

enschede tourist info

On May 13, 2000, a fireworks storage in Enschede exploded, destroying an entire neighborhood and killing 23 people, including 4 firemen. This catastrophe is known in the Netherlands as the Vuurwerkramp, Dutch for fireworks disaster . Since this event, the city has undergone a major reconstruction process. After the fall of the textile industry, Enschede strives to become a center of business, innovation and technology through the Business and Science park next to the University of Twente.

As a city famous for being "destroyed and reconstructed" many times, Enschede does not offer much in terms of historical attractions. However, the city has nice displays of contemporary Dutch architecture, particularly in the Roombeek neighborhood and at University of Twente, and its nightlife, cultural vibrancy and shopping options are quite developed for a city of its size.

Official language is Dutch. Almost all understand English. Since Enschede is close to Germany, there are more tourist information brochures in German than English.

Map

From elsewhere in the Netherlands, Enschede is easily accessible by train from all major Dutch cities, and can be reached from smaller cities with at most one or two transfers. The journey time from Amsterdam is approximately two hours. An excellent (train only) travel planner is available at Nationale Spoorwegen . Hourly intercity trains from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport , The Hague and Zwolle terminate at 52.222372 6.890495 1 Enschede railway station . If you need to use a connecting bus or ferry from within the Netherlands, use 9292 .

From Germany, direct trains (ending in Enschede railway station) are available from Gronau, Dortmund, and Münster. From Münster, it takes 1 hr 20 min by hourly regional train to Enschede. To reach Enschede from Berlin, a stopover is available in Hengelo (a small city about 10 minutes by train from Enschede). Further guidance is available at Die Bahn .

KLM provides free bus transfer for travellers arriving or departing on KLM flights from Amsterdam Schiphol airport. The bus leaves Amsterdam Schiphol twice a day, at 09:05 and 21:00. The entire ride takes 3 hours.

Flixbus provides bus service from major cities Netherlands and Germany to Enschede. Buses stop at Enschede train station and University of Twente.

There is a large parking lot underneath the market square in the centre of the city, the H.J. van Heekplein, which provides approximately 2000 parking spaces for visitors arriving by car.

There is a cheaper park-and-ride solution available at the expanded P+R Zuiderval. Frequent buses travel from here directly to the city center (approximately 5 minutes by bus). This is especially useful if you are arriving in Enschede via the highway, as the lot is just off the highway exit.

Enschede is a city best explored by bicycle, on foot or by public transportation. Parking spaces can be difficult to find and there are often traffic jams, especially during rush hour. The city center is also closed to motorized vehicles.

Buses in Enschede do not accept cash. Payment by debit or credit cards are required.

The Oude Markt is the location of many bars and bistros which have large terraces, making it the perfect location for a drink on a warm summer night. The oldest pub in Enschede is Het Bolwerk, in the Bolwerkstraat, where one can drink a wide variety of beers and spirits, with the shocking exception of the Enschede-brewed Grolsch.

While the hipper crowds turn to places like Aspen Valley and Central Park , the alternative scene spends their Saturday night in Atak , where one can see a wide variety of customers from hippies to gothics to hard-core-metal-lovers. The student associations also have their own pub in de Pakkerij, like the largest student association of Enschede, AEGEE-Enschede which is often also open to visits from AEGEE students visiting from other European student cities.

Enschede - Langestraat

Enschede is the largest city in the Twente region and is located in the Overijssel province of the Netherlands. This green city is surrounded by nature and is an excellent place for cycling, walking or horseback riding. After a large fireworks disaster, the city was left in disrepair and is still being reconstructed to this day. Although Enschede has a long history, its roots are still shrouded in mystery.

The Formation of the City

Early history of Enschede is still unknown. However, it appears that a settlement did exist near the Old Marketplace during medieval times. At the time, the settlement went by the name of Anescede or Enscede and included a marketplace, church and a fortified house.

The town was finally given city rights in 1300, but these rights were not confirmed until 1325 by Bishop Jan III van Diest. Although the city had the opportunity to build a stone wall, the project was too expensive. Instead, a series of ditches, hedges and palisades were built. This is reflected in the names of the city streets, which include Zuiderhagen (South Hedge) and Noorderhagen (North Hedge).

As with most medieval cities, Enschede was largely at risk for fires because homes were built of wood. A series of fires occurred in 1517, 1750 and in 1862, which caused large amounts of damage to the town. It is for this reason that the people of Enschede have earned the nickname Brandstichters, or arsonists.

Modern History

After the last series of fires in 1862, the town saw tremendous growth as it soon became a large producer of textiles. Cotton was its original industry, but they soon branched off to produce bombazijn, which is a mixture of cotton and linen. Of course, with an increase in industry, a boom in the population was also seen.

During World War II, Enschede was frequently bombed by allied troops who were aiming for the German command center. In some cases, the allied troops mistook the city for a German town. However, the city was quite successful at saving many of the Jews that went into hiding. Out of 1300, 500 were saved.

During the 1970s, the city ceased their production of textiles. Competition from the Far East forced many factories to shut down and consequently had a negative effect on the town’s population. Soon after, the city became one of the poorest in the Netherlands and, essentially, went bankrupt.

With the help of the government, the city was re-built. The center of town became a car-free zone. Despite the firework disaster in 2000, the city has managed to rise from the ashes once more and remain a thriving town.

Transportation in Enschede

Getting to and around the beautiful Dutch city of Enschede is very easy due to the well run and integrated system of public transport services and the excellent road network. There is no local airport for Enschede  and probably the easiest way to get there by air, is to fly into Schipool airport, Amsterdam and conclude your journey by either rail or, if you would like more flexibility, by road after hiring a car from one of the many car hire firms at the airport.

Trains And Buses

If you are travelling to Enschede by train you will find that there is an efficient and well run network of trains running to the city from local, national and international destinations. The train from Amsterdam is a frequent and direct service which will take around 2 hrs to arrive. There is also a good service from Dortmund and Munster. There is a connecting train via Hengelo to Berlin for those that are travelling from Germany which takes approximately 5 hrs from station to station. There are also fast trains from Rotterdam and The Hague. To get up to date information on fares and journey times, you should call the national train helpline on, +31(0)900 9296.

There is a good bus network, to and around the city. The local bus station is right by the central train station in the middle of the town. The local buses are run by the Syntus company, who also run the long distance services, from Denekamp, Hengelo, Oldezaal and Overdinkel.  To get information on both the local and long distance buses, you call the information line on,  +31(0)900 9292.

Taxis Cars And Bicycles

There is a good efficient taxi service in Enschede. The taxis are clean, safe and well run. The taxis can be found at taxi ranks, such as at the train station, flagged down in the street, or booked by phone. The numbers for 2 local services are, Taxi Hotax 053 478 4789 and Di taxi at 053 461 5060.

Enschede is reached by car via the A35 and there is a good, (5 min journey) park and ride system as you drive towards the city. There is also a large, 2,000 space car park under the main square, but traffic, to and from the centre may be heavy. There are no cars allowed in the middle of the city.

Probably the easiest way to get around the city centre is to either walk or hire a bike. there are several places where you can hire a bike and as elsewhere in Holland there is a good system of cycle routes.

Enschede Tourism

Enschede is a medium sized city in the eastern province of Twente. In former times Enschede was a major centre of the textile industry, but now it is a university city that also has business, scientific and technology areas. In the year 2000 there was a large explosion at a fireworks warehouse near to the middle of the city. As well as causing much loss of life, it also destroyed a small area of the town which has since been rebuilt with some interesting architect designed buildings. In 2003 Enschede was named the greenest city in Holland.

Museums And Entertainments

The Grote Kerk is not only the oldest church in Enschede, it is also the oldest building. Founded in 1200 it has been enlarged and altered over the years and,  as such, makes for a fascinating trip for anyone interested in medieval architecture. For those with a more modern taste in buildings, the Roombeek is the area destroyed by the fire works explosion. It has since been rebuilt with the help of various well known and talented architects. It is a very interesting place that also has a lot of green spaces.

Museum Twentse Well at, Het Rozendaal 11 is a modern museum which is also in the Roombeek. It has many interesting exhibitions on the peoples and the way they lived in historical and ancient times. Although the museum is very interesting, the exhibits are only in Dutch and German.

Shopping And Eating

Enschede has some great places to shop. Indeed it is thought by many to be the best shopping in the east of the Netherlands. There is a weekly market which sells a wide and interesting array of goods and product. As well as the many locals that visit the market, there  are also many visitors from the nearby border with Germany. HJ van Heekplein has a good selection of both large and small shops as well as some major retailers. If you  are looking for something a bit more off beat  some of the smaller back streets contain many interesting artisan stores and boutiques.

De Oude Markt is a beautiful terrace where there are many good cafes and restaurants.  At Walstraat 15-17 is Appeltjes van Oranje, a great and friendly Dutch restaurant serving local food in an atmosphere that is more like a dining room than a formal eaterie. Enschede is a great little city that can offer something for everyone, whether you are going for a holiday, or just visiting on a day trip while in Germany.
