Here are some of the things we learn about on the tour:

Styles and common types of street art.

Tags are words written in spray paint on a surface of any sort: including walls, storefronts, signs or doors. The words are usually the name of the person who wrote it; or their crew. They are generally just one color, a few inches in size or a couple of feet.

The traditional motivation of a tag is to create exposure for oneself and broadcast the audacity of taking the risk to spray paint in a dangerous, inaccessible or openly public place. For a tag the main audience are other taggers. Larger productions known as "throw-ups" and "pieces" are more stylized and feature multiple colors - although they follow the same premise as tags and are also typically a name.

Murals are generally large and portray an image or scene. They often tell a story or express feelings of the artist. Many of them carry a social or political critique, satire or message. Murals are generally larger than tags but come in all sizes. Today artists are granted permission or even paid to produce murals for public display on businesses and public buildings.

Posters/Paste-ups

Poster art is usually created in private, then brought to a public place and affixed to a surface. It is attached using an adhesive called wheat paste . In addition to paint, poster art can also incorporate multiple layers, cutouts, collages or stickers. The down side to a poster is that it's more susceptible to weather conditions or destruction than spray paint. Therefore it tend to last less long than other graffiti mediums.

Hunt Rodriguez alien art

Modern street graffiti began in New York City in the early 1970's (although the person who is credited as the world's first graffiti writer was a student in Philadelphia named Cornbread). Young teenagers growing up in impoverished, marginalized communities started "tagging" their names on walls in public places. These 'writers' created alter egos, aliases that often combined a nickname with a number. Often the digits were based on the street the tagger lived on. Early leaders in the tagging world included people with street aliases like Fab5Freddy and Tracy168 . These graffiti pioneers experimented with new styles and began the fad of tagging New York City's subway trains. This historic era of graffiti was when the main widely-accepted customs and slang language developed.

Recognition

While locally in New York graffiti was seen and treated as vandalism, enthusiasts in Europe recognized artistic value in the "tagging" and brought these young writers to their continent to produce and exhibit work. Graffiti was an instant hit in Europe and by the mid 1980's the writers, who in America were looked upon as criminals, were treated as celebrities in countries like Italy and Germany. Over the 1980's there slowly began to be more recognition of graffiti artists in the US too. Some of the legendary pioneers were recruited to paint in music videos and on cable television.

Rise of "Street Art"

By the late 1980's the original historic graffiti era in New York had ended and local writers proceeded to carry on and repeat the traditions and culture of their predecessors . Meanwhile in Europe the urban art movement was just gaining traction. In the 1990's European artists experimented with new styles, which have become referred to as 'post-graffiti' or 'street art.' A French artist known as Blek Le Rat is attributed with introducing the stencil , a form of spray art which grew popular over the next decade. In recent years the stencil has been made famous by notorious British artist Banksy . Another noteworthy artist is Frenchman Space Invader who illegally installs ceramic tiles that portray pixelated old video game characters.

Mainstream Acceptance

By the 2000's, street art was followed around the world and top artists became household names. UK artist Banksy gained reverence and notoriety for his thought provoking images which appear in the unlikeliest of places. His work has subsequently commanded unheralded prices at top art auction houses. The rise of the internet and social media has allowed for fans to follow their favorite artists, and for writers to collaborate across continents, cultures and language barriers.

Controversy

The acceptance of street art into mainstream art circles has created social controversies. In late 2012 a Banksy piece disappeared from a London wall and resurfaced at a luxury art auction in Miami, Florida. Residents of its original London neighborhood expressed protest. They felt strongly that as a work of art it belonged to the community where it was created, and that it should be returned. The auction went ahead nonetheless and the piece was sold to a private collector for 1.1 million dollars!

Bushwick Collective

The murals we view on the tour are concentrated around an urban art exhibition called the Bushwick Collective . The Bushwick Collective was founded in 2012 by Joseph Ficalora - a neighborhood personality and businessperson - to beautify gritty industrial streets with vibrant art. Joe is inspired by his deceased father and mother - and the street art is dedicated to them. The Bushwick Collective brings together artists from around the world, legendary NYC graffiti artists, and local longtime Bushwick talent. In just a few years the Bushwick Collective has become the most famous street art exhibition in New York City, and one of the premier mural districts in the United States.

About Bushwick (neighborhood)

Bushwick is a dense post-industrial neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City. It is currently becoming recognized for a blooming artist and creative scene. Also for new trendy restaurants and nightlife. The scene has blossomed over the last few years as nearby artsy Williamsburg has gotten more expensive. Aside from incoming artists and young professionals, Bushwick's primary population is Puerto Rican, Dominican-American and immigrants from Latin America. Bushwick is nearly 400 years old and was first founded by Dutch (on land taken over from Native Americans who lived there for centuries). In the 1800's the area filled with German immigrants and became a major place of manufacturing and beer brewing. There was also a large Italian and Sicilian immigrant community, before Bushwick's current Spanish-language residents began arriving in the 1970's. Unfortunately the area's gentrification has an ugly side - skyrocketing prices and people being dispossessed from their homes.

We’ve got you covered in this one-stop guide featuring how to get to the Bushwick art collective, where to find all the Bushwick graffiti and murals, where to find more Bushwick street art, and what to do nearby including food – one of our favorite things to do in Brooklyn and recommendations for visitors who love street art!

This neighborhood is teeming with creative spaces and places and if you stick around there’s a great nightlife scene!

The Bushwick Collective started in 2012 and in its early years this area did have work done by legendary names in the street art world from Blek le Rat to Banksy, Shepard Fairey, ROA, and other famous local Brooklyn artists like Sara Erenthal whose work you can see all throughout the city.

See why this is one of our favorite Brooklyn walks and use this guide to help you plan your visit to the Bushwick Collective, one of the best spots for Brooklyn street art .

About Bushwick Collective

fun and colorful Bushwick Collective mural in brooklyn

The Bushwick Collective is a living breathing art collective in Bushwick, Brooklyn in NYC. This creative array of Bushwick art was conceived and created by Bushwick native, Joe Ficalora, with its first mural surfacing in 2011.

It has since attracted talented artists from all over the world and fabulously showcases first-rate street art by the creators. The genesis of this Bushwick Collective is quite the story, as the founder came of age in the 1980s, during a time when the Bushwick area was known for high crime rates.

Having suffered the losses of both of his parents, Joe wanted to revive himself and his neighborhood and thus transformed it into an open-air gallery for everyone to enjoy and help him cope with his painful memories.

What a testament to the power of art. Come relish at the Bushwick art collective, featuring Bushwick murals from some of our favorite street artists.

Annual Bushwick Collective Block Party

big ear and donut mural at the Bushwick Collective in Brooklyn

The Bushwick Collective Block party is an annual art event in Bushwick, Brooklyn. World-renowned local, national, and international artists are invited to showcase their creations during this community-enriching event.

The annual block party has been hosted every June since 2012, with the exception of 2020, and features new artists every year.

Just as artists line the walls with their colorful depictions, musicians fill the air with the sound of their live performances. Visitors should come prepared with cash in their pockets as the street becomes a massive merchant market for jewelry, prints, and custom clothing, designed by the various artisans.

There is something for everyone as this event ties together talented Bushwick graffiti, street art, music, food from trucks and local vendors, and of course, a wonderful sense of community.

Culture is contagious and Bushwick Collective’s block party has since inspired more Bushwick murals to pop up around the area – even walls that are not officially a part of the Bushwick Collective have been filled with colorful and vibrant works of art.

What’s even more incredible is that street art in nature is not permanent, and therefore fresh new murals are constantly being added annually – and in real-time!

Thus, this makes visiting the Bushwick art collective great year-round. Fresh Bushwick graffiti next to never-before-seen Bushwick street art makes for a truly remarkable experience.

The Bushwick street art collective brings about a wide range of artists, with varying talents and backgrounds. Some of the biggest names whose work either is or has been on display at the Bushwick Collective include Monks Art, Adam Fu, and Daisey Freedman to name a few.

Monks’s Bushwick murals are colorfully provoking depictions of wildlife that are often personified to take on comedic forms. Adam Fu is a Brooklyn-based neon wizard who specializes in luminous Bushwick graffiti of various designs.

If you like art that is a bit edgy, Daisey Freedman’s Bushwick art features spookily creative pieces. Below is a list of artists and their social tags for anyone interested in checking out their work.

Bushwick Collective Location & Tips for Visiting

tons of mini murals at the Bushwick Collective in Brooklyn

The Bushwick Collective is located in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, right off of Flushing Avenue. The best route involves taking the L line of the subway train to the Jefferson Street station. This is a great starting point for your adventure.

Once arrived, you are free to explore the walls of art independently or via a paid, guided tour from a local tour agency. While most tour companies charge a fee for their walking tours, some operate on a pay-what-you-like model like Free Tours by Foot.

In order to get the best out of your Bushwick Collective trip plan at least an hour if not longer to just mosey around and walk up and down the streets.

You can find most of the murals along Troutman Street between Irving Avenue and Cypress Avenue, there are more along Starr Street too.

As I said, it’s best to just walk up and down the streets, make sure you check both sides and peek around as there are some tucked away! There is also a group of street art around the block of Moore Street, White Street, Siegel Street, and Bogart Street.

If you are looking for a particular artist or piece of work, follow Bushwick Collective’s official page on Instagram (@thebushwickcollective) for additional insights.

How to Get to the Bushwick Collective

Bushwick Collective mural from 2019 in Bushwick

The Bushwick Collective is easily accessible using the subway. Visitors using public transportation will be happy to hear that the street art gallery is a short 7-minute walk from the nearest train station, located off of Jefferson Street (L train).

To arrive, take the L subway to Jefferson Street station, which is 7 stops out of the borough of Manhattan if you’re coming from this way. The L line can be picked up at any station along 14th Street. If you take 14th Street – Union Square station, the travel time will be under 20 minutes.

If you are coming from Midtown or Downtown Manhattan, the travel time is a bit longer at 25-40 minutes, to allow for the transition to a different subway line. Bushwick Collective is right outside the Jefferson Street station, so you will have no trouble finding a starting point for the walking tour.

The Bushwick graffiti will guide your path through the colorfully decorated walls. In the event that this route is not available (due to construction, weather, etc.), you may take the subway’s M line to Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenue station before heading to Starr Street.

Alternatively, you can also take the L line to Jefferson Street from here, which will take about a half hour or so.

More Bushwick Street Art

wolf Bushwick street art and mural in Brooklyn

For those who haven’t quite got their fill of Bushwick street art, there are more Bushwick murals by Maria Hernandez Park. This 7-acre municipal park is located between Knickerbocker Avenue from the southwest to Irving Avenue on the northeast, and Starr Street from the northwest to Suydam Street on the southeast.

Many more Bushwick murals can be seen by taking Knickerbocker Avenue towards East Williamsburg. Additionally, there are more notable murals that can be found around the Bushwick/East Williamsburg border, near the L subway line’s stop at Morgan Avenue.

Visitors will be happy to see that the vibrant pieces on display are not limited to the strip of the Bushwick art collective. If you’re wanting to see more than Bushwick street art, head over to see the street art in Williamsburg who also has a great scene and isn’t too far away.

Another option, a little further south in Brooklyn is checking out the many commissioned murals at Industry City in Sunset Park.

Nearby the Bushwick Collective

Biggie Smalls Mural in Bushwick

We recommend sticking around after exploring all the Bushwick art and murals in addition to the Bushwick Collective to check out the best things to do in Bushwick as well as enjoy a meal here!

Don’t miss the amazing thrift shops in Bushwick too if you’re into shopping second-hand treasures!

If you’re coming in the afternoon you also might want to stick around for the epic nightlife scene in this neighborhood.

Maria Hernandez Park

After your tour of the Bushwick street art and Bushwick graffiti, head over to Bushwick’s largest community park, Maria Hernandez Park, one of the best parks in Brooklyn .

Known as the neighborhood’s center of public life, this greenspace is always bustling with activities. Visitors may enter this park, nearby to the Bushwick art, at any corner as each entrance leads to a circular plaza, often used for events.

If you’ve brought the kiddos along, your best bet would be to enter at the corner of Knickerbocker Avenue, where a rainbow-colored playground with a large play area awaits.

Other areas of the park allow for recreational sports such as volleyball, basketball, and handball. There is even an asphalt little league yard equipped with a workout area for anyone in need of a pop-up gym.

For the furry friends, enter at Willoughby Avenue, where your pup can frolic through the large dog runs.

Bushwick Food

los hermanos tortillas in Bushwick

Bushwick art isn’t the only thing this colorful neighborhood has to offer. Calling all foodies – plenty of restaurants share the space or line the border of the Bushwick street art.

There are no shortage of new awesome eateries popping up and NYC famous spots like Roberta’s but what makes Bushwick’s food scene so special are all the influences from the Hispanic and Latin American communities that lived here before the gentrification of the neighborhood.

Here are some of the top recommendations for what to do in Bushwick for foodies exploring the roots of this neighborhood through your tastebuds.

For those who favor a spicy flavor, you’re in luck as there are plenty of spots with a menu for you. Tortilleria Mexicanas Los Hermanos sports a lively exterior that is darn near impossible to miss, and a tasty interior with fresh tortillas that taste just as good plain as they do fried into tostadas. This is also one of our picks for the best tacos in Brooklyn .

La Isla Cuchifritos offers a Puerto Rican cuisine, and yes that includes all sorts of fried foods, but we recommend the cucharitos.

Craving unbeatable tacos? Try Taqueria El Fogon , dubbed as the neighborhood’s taco haven. Visitors boast about their homemade salsa, which according to frequenters, is poured over just about every dish they serve.

Rico Pollo is great for the taste buds and the wallet and offer a Dominican-inspired menu.

If spice just isn’t your thing, don’t worry as the legendary Roberta’s serves up wood-fired Neapolitan-style pies in their garage all day long and is one of the most famous spots for pizza in Brooklyn . Visitors beware – the lines can be quite lengthy during the day, so prepare for at least a 1-hour wait.

What could be a more perfect way to kill some time than to scroll through your fresh camera roll of your favorite Bushwick art pieces?

Syndicated Bar Theatre Kitchen

If none of the prior food stops fit your fancy, consider an evening at the Syndicated Theatre for a dinner and show, located close by to the Bushwick art collective.

Enjoy old cinema and cult classics while you sip on cider and scarf down sandwiches, salads, and snacks. Be sure to check out their happy hour, which is Monday through Friday from 5-7 pm.

Whether you’re watching the show in their 60-seat, indoor theatre, or from their sidewalk cinema, their full-service offerings are sure to please. Visitors should know that while the indoor theatre requires prior reservation of tickets, the sidewalk cinema operates on a first-come, first-serve basis. Don’t wait, buy your tickets in advance before they’re sold out!

Tiny Cupboard

Tiny Cupboard comedy shows in Brooklyn

Looking for some laughs? If so, the Tiny Cupboard is an awesome Brooklyn comedy venue worth checking out and one I attend regularly! This underground/overground performance space, nestled nearby to the Bushwick art collective, showcases stand-up comedy shows on a rooftop venue, located on the border of East Bushwick and Bed-Stuy.

The Tiny Cupboard comprises a tiny art studio, comedy church, and that large rooftop space. The company prides itself in hosting culturally enriching, intimate events and those who care to share in this comedic ambiance should sign up for their email newsletters or follow on Instagram to stay on top of their upcoming events.

Those who wish to test out their talents on stage should hang around on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, where open mic releases inhibitions from all who enter. Don’t forget to support the cause by grabbing a piece of their awesome merch on your way out!

The NYC walking tour of Bushwick's best graffiti

Get a glimpse of the latest works to spatter the industrial ’hood

Forget the museums in New York and spend a day taking in some street art. While New York is a true mecca for seeing street art and graffiti , we recommend you take the train to Bushwick—which is now officially the seventh most-stylish neighborhood in the world (according to Anna Wintour, anyway). You can use the travel time to wonder what your tag would be. RECOMMENDED: Find more  NYC tours  and walks

• Get off at Morgan Ave and take the Bogart St exit. Forget the museums and spend a day taking in some street art. Take the L train, and use the travel time to wonder what your tag would be. Get off at Morgan Ave and take the Bogart St exit. Make a right off the subway and check out the huge Missed Connection billboard painted on the side of a building on Bogart St—it's a woman looking for a man she saw walking his cat in the area, asking him to call her "if you nasty." It’s an ad by hand-painted mural company Colossal, but no less awesome for that. • Head south on Bogart St and make a right toward graffiti paradise Siegel St. Refuel with a delicious (and virtuous) Almond Chunky raw-chocolate bar at Fine & Raw   (288 Siegel St, 718-366-3633, fineandraw.com ). • Walk up Seigel St toward White St and feast your eyes on an full-block-long concrete canvas. • Walk north along White St and admire ViceVersa Vintage (71 White St, no phone, viceversavintage.com ) , a cool second-hand clothing store which is creatively tagged on either side of the entrance. • Take McKibbin St back to Bogart St. Make a right on Bogart and walk south to peep the mural of the namesake bird over the doors of Swallow Café (49 Bogart St at Grattan St) , and you’ll be back to where you started. But don’t hop back on the subway just yet! • Cross to Grattan St to see a stunning, colorful spray-paint rainbow almost immediately on your right. • Take a left onto Morgan Ave and get an eyeful of art—from the amoeba-style tag on the corner to the playful depiction of monsters with their tongues out further down the road—courtesy of street artist Phetus. • Walk a few blocks east , to the corner of Wyckoff Ave and Troutman St, and marvel at Dasic Fernandez’s Hand of Protest mural, which just dried in August. • To complete your walk, break out your spray cans and make your mark. (Kidding, guys.)

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

The easiest way to get to Bushwick is to take the L line (that runs along 14th street in Manhattan) to the nearest subway station, the Jefferson Street Station . About Bushwick Neighborhood

In the 17th century, the town of Bushwick was a Dutch settlement (that also included the areas of present-day Williamsburg and Greenpoint) whose settlers were farmers and tobacco producers. In the middle of the 19th century, the area became more industrialized as many plants and factories were flourishing along Brooklyn’s waterfront. Many new immigrants from Germany and Austria settled in the area and opened breweries and beer halls.

As better transportation systems connected Bushwick to downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge, more immigrants joined the mix, especially English, Irish, Italians, Russians, Polish and Jews. Between the first and second world war, Bushwick was one of the best residential areas in Brooklyn. However, after World War II, the neighborhood’s demographics started to change as African Americans and Caribbean American families began to move in, followed by low-income Latin American families. Race riots began to rip the neighborhood apart, and many of the white residents moved away. The neighborhood went from being 90% white to less than 40% in a decade.

Bushwick took another blow during the 1977 Blackout. Hundreds of shops were looted or totally destroyed, and fires burned all over the neighborhood. As a result, everyone who could afford to leave did so. So at the end of the 20th century, Bushwick was full of poverty, crime, and drugs.

In the 2000s, things started to change. The City and State of New York founded the “Bushwick Initiative” that focused on improving the housing conditions and lowering the crime rates. Bushwick began to attract young professionals and artists who couldn’t afford Manhattan’s high rents.  Nowadays, Bushwick is considered one of the coolest neighborhoods in Brooklyn and attracts many visitors every year.

Which Kind of Street Art You Will See in Bushwick

Everyone comes to Bushwick to visit the Bushwick Art Collective. The Bushwick Collective is a unique project where you’ll find dozens of murals and street art in a span of a few blocks. However, there are other street art forms in Bushwick, outside of the compound of the Bushwick Street Art Collective. Local artists do most of these street art creations. Some as a form of creative expression and others as a form of rebellion against the popularized Bushwick Collective. These unsanctioned street art creations are found all over Bushwick; on the doorways, on trash cans, on sidewalks, and so on, so make sure to keep your eyes open during your visit.

About the Bushwick Collective

The story behind the Bushwick Collective started with a single person who took it upon himself to change his childhood neighborhood and turn its seedy streets into an outdoor art gallery. Joe Ficalora grew up in Bushwick in the 1980s when the neighborhood was infested by drugs, violence and poverty. Instead of street art and graffiti, dozens of abandoned buildings and piles of trash adorned the neighborhood’s streets. As a child, Joe Ficalora wasn’t allowed to play outside, and he was exposed to hookers and gangs on a daily basis. When he was 12 years old, his father was murdered on his way home from work. After he’d lost his mother to cancer in 2011, he decided the key to his own self-healing would be to revive and heal his childhood neighborhood and turn the industrial and neglected streets into an art gallery.

In the beginning, he googled “street art” and invited some street artists to beautify his neighbors’ walls. Once the neighboring plants and businesses saw the finished works of arts, they were more than glad to supply naked walls for Ficalora’s street artists. This was the beginning of the famous Bushwick murals. Fast forward a few years later, and now Joe Ficalora is the curator of one of the largest street art projects in the world.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Bushwick Street Art Collective

Th e best time to visit the Bushwick Collective is in June during the Bushwick Collective block party. Every June (usually on the first Saturday of June), the Bushwick Collective throws a huge block party with street artists, food trucks, and live music. During this time, many local and international artists are invited to create some of the best Bushwick murals. The murals and street art stay on the walls for about a year, and then they are replaced by other works of art. Although the main activity takes place in June, new murals are pained year-round.

If you are not fans of crowds and would like to admire the Bushwick murals and street art collection at ease, come during the week (preferably in the morning), since during the weekend, the area is much more crowded.

Who Are the Artists Behind Bushwick Street Art and Murals

There are many international as well as local artists that participate in this street art venture. It is impossible to list them all, but here are a few that caught our eyes:

  • Jimmy C (James Cochran) – A well known Australian street artist. He has a unique signature style – aerosol pointillist style. He uses dots and dashes of spray paints to paint his portraits or urban landscapes. He calls these techniques ‘drip paintings’ and ‘scribble paintings’.
  • Chris Stain – An American street artist originally from Baltimore but currently living in Queens. His portraits are “an authentic contemporary document that illustrates the triumph of the human spirit as experienced by those in underrepresented urban and rural environments”. He loves to adapt images from photographs and usually works with spray paint and stencils.
  • Vexx (Vince Okerman) – This 21-year-old Belgium artist is known for his signature colorful ‘doodles’ style, which is sometimes accompanied by realistic drawings. Check out this video of how he created his Bushwick mural .
  • Sipros Naberezny – This Brazilian street artist specializes in painting photorealistic yet stylized portraits. He is most famous for his “Big Ears” character, which refers to the kids’ world. At times he also likes to reproduce the faces of famous and anonymous persons in a realistic way.
  • Lexi Bella – This American painter, muralist, and street artist was raised in New Jersey, but currently resides in Brooklyn. Her murals can be found all over the world. Her large spray murals and paintings are inspired by community issues, pop culture and female identity. She likes to use bright colors, and many time her subjects exude playful feminine charm. Her current work in the Bushwick Collective is titled My Body My Choice, and it addresses the issue of women’s rights to legal abortion.
  • Madsteez (Mark Paul Deren) – Madsteez is known for his colorful multilayered murals, paintings and illustrations. He is almost blind in one of his eyes (through which he sees only whirlpools of paint). Madsteez adds the word ‘ween’ (which means to think or suppose) to many of his artworks to describe the way he sees the world and create his artwork with only one good eye. He is known for his brightly-colored characters, which are often depicted with purple faces in front of graphic backgrounds.

Graffiti, Murals, Street Art and the In-Between

Most people use the terms graffiti, street art and murals interchangeably. We all use these terms to describe forms of art or creative expressions that are found on walls, objects, and other parts of a city. However, these terms are not always interchangeable. We’ve tried to summarize some of the key differences in a nutshell.

  • Graffiti – Graffiti is based on words, and many times, it is illegal, and therefore, is done at nighttime. Though ancient graffiti drawings have existed for thousands of years, modern graffiti started in the United States. This art form evolved from low-income neighborhoods as a type of self-expression for frustrated youth. In the beginning, it started with scribbled nicknames or words, which are called “tags”. Later, graffiti drawings have become larger and more elaborate with stylized letters and fonts. What started as an underground subculture has gained more and more popularity over the years and turned into a mainstream phenomenon. Graffiti artists are usually self-taught, and since it’s illegal, many of them remain anonymous. They typically use aerosol spraying techniques to create their art or even simple markers for small and simple tags.
  • Street art – Street art is any work of art that is seen on public property. Its roots might be illegal since it was developed from graffiti. However, these days, it has become accepted as a contemporary form of urban art. If the artist has permission to perform its art, it’s legal. Nowadays, many cities use street art to uplift certain areas and draw tourists to what once was a neglected area of town. It can be in the form of murals that cover a wall of a building, or in the form of smaller drawings or statues from conventional or unconventional materials. When street art is legal, the artist signs his/her name or nickname. Street artists are free to use whatever techniques and tools they want, such as paint, spray paint, bronze, yarn (yes, yarn-bombing is a thing) or whatever suits their art.
  • Graffiti Art – Graffiti art is a mash between graffiti and street art. It is elaborate graffiti that is more figurative and combined with images.
  • Murals – Murals have existed for thousands of years in the form of cave paintings. The word ‘mural’ originates from the word ‘murus’ in Latin, which means ‘wall’. Murals can be defined as art that is created directly on a flat wall or ceiling, and they usually cover the whole surface. Therefore, murals are a type of street art. Murals are usually painted with long-lasting paints that are resistant to the weather.
  • Tagging/bombing – As mentioned in our graffiti section, tags are the simplest form of graffiti, a signing of your name or nickname. Nowadays, tagging is used by graffiti artists who feel the more popular street artists and mural painters invaded their territory. You’ll see some occurrences of tagging or bombing around Bushwick murals. It’s a battle for wall space and recognition. Sometimes the street artists paint smiley faces over graffiti tags in an effort to minimize the damage.

The Bushwick Collective Debate – When Art and Money Collide

Many types of art forms cover the streets and buildings of Bushwick, and though in general, it has had a positive effect, some locals and artists try to highlight its negative impact on the neighborhood.

The battle between graffiti and street art is an ongoing war all over the world. Although street art has become very popular and many cities around the world use it to beautify neglected areas and attract more tourists to their city, graffiti has been rejected as a legitimate art form. It is also true to Brooklyn and New York City, which leaves many of the graffiti artists frustrated, to say the least. Many feel that street art is much more relatable. Graffiti is much more subversive and hard to “be tamed”, and it’s more about marking an area as your own than creating public art. This is one of the reasons, so many tags are found on Bushwick Collective’s murals and other street art all around Bushwick. Moreover, many local street artists complain that nowadays, the Bushwick Collective highlights well-known and many times, international artists, instead of giving a voice to newcomers and locals. In other words, you have to be connected to join the party.

In addition, it seems that these days, such popular art projects go hand in hand with gentrification. Many of these public art ventures benefit the local community, but they also attract a whole new residential demographic. Once they are successful, the fabric of the neighborhood changes, followed by higher rents. Many times, some of the original residents find themselves pushed out of their childhood neighborhoods.

Besides, popular street art projects, such as the Bushwick Art Collective are intertwined with commercial and corporate interests. Once Bushwick became popular and attracted more tourists, billboards, and commercial adds seemed to follow. Billboard companies are used to leverage artwork for exposure. Advertisers are well aware of the fact that placing a billboard or a huge advertisement wherever murals are found ensures massive exposure on social media. Many of the building owners in Bushwick were offered huge sums of money to allow to place billboards and commercial adds on their walls. Some refused to participate in Joe Ficalora‘s original project, but now they are cashing in on its popularity in the same way those billboard companies do.

So is the Bushwick Collective good or bad? It depends on who you ask. There’s no doubt Joe Ficalora’s intentions are good and that the project has helped uplift Bushwick, but there are some problematic issues as well. You can read more about the war of the walls in Bushwick here or watch the No Free Walls YouTube documentary about how art and gentrification collide in Bushwick.

Buy Organic Chocolate at Fine & Raw

Fine & Raw are famous for their addictive raw organic chocolate bars. It all started in a small loft in Williamsburg where the artist Daniel Sklaar started making small chocolate batches and sharing them with friends, and later with local specialty shops. Unlike most of the chocolate you buy at the store, Fine & Raw’s chocolate is actually good for you. Fine & Raw’s addictive chocolate bars and truffles are made from organic coffee beans (bought directly from small organic farmers in Ghana and Ecuador), They are sweetened with coconut sugar, and some are not sweetened at all. The stylish wrappers are an added bonus.

Beer and Art at Brooklyn Beer Garden

If you are lucky, you will be able to visit the trendy Brooklyn Beer Garden , a popup beer garden that combines beer with art. Brooklyn Beer Garden is only open in the summer with some special events during the year.

Artists and friends, Gabriele and Tyagi, build and curate popup beer gardens to celebrate Brooklyn’s beer and street art cultures. They invite new and well-known artists to showcase their work in the compound. They also host workshops and teach school children different techniques of street art. We were lucky enough to visit Brooklyn Beer Garden during its Halloween party when they hosted a live DJ event.

Go Beer Tasting

If Brooklyn Beer Garden is closed, or if you’d rather visit a real brewery and taproom, check out the cool local brewery, Kings County Brewers Collective (KCBC). This is the first brewery to open in the neighborhood after the last of the old-time breweries closed in 1976. The three founders come from different backgrounds, but they are all graduates of the American Brewers Guild in Vermont. They met at brewing clubs in Brooklyn and decided to open a brewery together. This is a fun place to spend an afternoon or evening. There is no food but you can bring your own.

KCBC: Address: 381 Troutman St  |  Opening Hours: Mon-Thu/Fri 5:00 pm – 11:00 pm/12:00 am, Sat/Sun 12:00 pm – 12:00 am/9:00 pm

Bushwick sounds super interesting, and I love street art! It sounds like such a cool and historic part of the city.

Bushwick is very interesting to explore and the murals are just fabulous!

This is so cool, especially because I’m stuck far from home (Manhattan) and it’s nice to see, well, what it used to look like… 😮 Thanks for this beautiful walk through, I will have to get there when I return to the US some day. Beautiful photos, by the way.

The situation in New York is heartbreaking 🙁 We really hope things would go back to normal as soon as possible. We’re glad we had a chance to send you some virtual love 🙂

The street art looks amazing! I’ll definitely keep the cider tasting in mind for when I visit 🙂 Love your street photography!

Thanks so much, Faria! It was out first-time cider tasting and it was great! Can’t wait for the second time 🙂

We do love to search for street art when we travel. We will definitely want to check out Bushwick NY when we travel that way next. I love the variety of the street art that you showed. It would be fun to visit in June when the block party happens! And maybe stop in for some organic chocolate to fuel our wandering.

June’s Block Party should be very fun but what’s so great about the Bushwick Collective it’s free and open to the crowds any time of the year/day. Oh, and you have to taste these organic chocolate bars, they are amazing!

What an awesome place! We love finding street art when we travel to new locations! The map is really helpful. Thanks so much for sharing.

We also love exploring local street art while we are traveling. So glad you’ve found our Bushwick street art map helpful 🙂

So cool! I have been to NYC twice nut I haven’t visited this area yet! Thanks for the tips, I cannot wait to see all the street-art by myself!!

Our pleasure, Ophelie! In real life, it’s even more impressive and beautiful!

I just wrote a whole blog post about mural hunting in Nashville, so I’m definitely a big fan of street art! I think it’s really cool that NYC actually has walking tours for the street art. It’s really being seen as art, not just graffiti.

Thanks, Shay, so glad you like it. We are also fans of street art and it’s great that many towns around the world give this art the proper respect it deserves.

This was a very interesting post. It’s wonderful how art has uplifted their neighborhood. And yes the complexity of gentrification is problematic. But the art is beautiful and raw and real. Glad to know about this neighborhood.

Thanks so much, Karen. Gentrification is a double-edged sword but we agree, no doubt that it has helped this neighborhood to overcome some obstacles!

I live in new york and haven’t spent any time in bushwick but wow now I want to hang out there every weekend! Love the photos!

Thank you so much, Jessica. Well, you should definitely go see the Bushwick Collective when you have a chance!

Why I didn’t find your blog post sooner! I would have gone to see it as well. Looks and sounds so interesting! Thank you for writing it.

Thank you, Diana. Try and do it on your next trip to New York 🙂

Thanks for this very comprehensive guide! Street art has become a big passion of mine in the past year or so, and I’m always eager to hear about different places to see great murals. I’ve still never been to New York, but when I go I will definitely check out Bushwick!

I feel compelled to mention that I found the wording of the introduction rather disturbing. It came across to me as saying that Bushwick was a great place to live until people of color moved in, and now that it’s mostly white again the problems have been solved. I really hope that wasn’t the intention behind the writing.

Hi Wendy, We’re so glad you’ve found our Bushwick street art guide helpful, you should definitely check it out the when you’re in New York, especially if you love street art as much as we do! Regarding the introduction, I assume you refer to the section about the history of Bushwick, of course, this was not our intention at all. I tried rereading it and the only sentence that seems problematic to me was the last one so I did change it. I am so sorry if you’ve gotten the wrong impression and thank you for bringing it to our attention. When looking at Bushwick’s history, there’s no denying for a time it was a dodgy neighborhood. Obviously, the neighborhood had a lot of crime for a while and riots and gang wars tore it apart. It is something that gradually happened over time, as in other neighborhoods around the world, especially in low-income neighborhoods, but it is certainly not related to the skin color of the residents. Sorry if you got the wrong impression.

These look so amazing! I’m definitely saving it for whenever we get back to New York 🙂

Thanks so much, Jen. You’d love it!

Bushwick Street Art You Don’t Want to Miss (with Bushwick Street Art Map)

bushwick graffiti walking tour

If you want to check out Bushwick Street Art, make sure to follow these local tips.

I always knew that New York had an abundance of art and music overfilling the streets and subways but it wasn’t until I moved away that I truly appreciated how much soul and creativity this city holds, especially in the Bushwick street art. There’s emotion and fluid lines of expression within the seemingly endless panels of vivid colors.

The Bushwick graffiti neighborhood is now the place to go for stunning street art e ver since, sadly, 5Pointz, the world’s former premier graffiti mecca, was painted over in one night on November 19, 2014.

Keep reading to learn where to see the best Brooklyn street art. Included in this post is where to eat before or after checking out the graffiti, a Bushwick Street Art map and even a recommendation for a group tour if you prefer to be shown around with context.

Must-Eat at Restaurant Before Your Bushwick Street Art Walk

bushwick graffiti walking tour

Before you go on your hunt for jaw dropping Bushwick street art and graffiti, I highly recommend starting out with a yummy pizza lunch at Roberta’s since it’s right outside the subway and around the corner from all the street art.

It’s one of my favorite pizza places in New York City! Besides pizza, everything they serve is delicious from their salads to cocktails.

The lines for this place get quite long so make sure to look at Google to see when it’s most busy. If you don’t mind having pizza for a late breakfast, I’d go as soon as it opens to beat the line.

To get to Roberta’s, take the L to the Morgan stop. Then after lunch, use my Bushwick street art map below to walk over to the Jefferson stop, which is the exact way I took to see the street art.

Address: Roberta’s, 261 Moore St, Brooklyn, NY 11206, USA

Brooklyn Street Art on the Walk Towards the Bushwick Collective

bushwick graffiti walking tour

After eating at Roberta’s on your way to the main Bushwick Collective street art area, you’ll random pieces of street art along the way as this whole neighborhood has tons of murals everywhere.

I was lucky to see a graffiti artist, Remy, in action. We chatted a bit, and I learned that he was adding onto an art piece he had worked on the year before. It was cool to see the evolution of his artwork as well as all the colors of spray paint he had!

Street Art and Graffiti at the Bushwick Collective

bushwick graffiti walking tour

Once you arrive at the Bushwick Collective, you will find tons and tons of beautiful murals. There are many different types of art from murals of the iconic Biggie Smalls to colorful, melt-your-face type ones like the above.

Wall of Bushwick street art at the Bushwick Collective

These murals photographed are just a small portion of what you can expect to see in Bushwick, and of course, if you see these in person, the photos don’t do it justice so it’ll be like seeing it for the first time.

The grandiosity of each mural and sheer volume of them will surely amaze you too.

Rather have someone walk you through these streets so you can personal insight about the neighborhood and artists? Go on a Brooklyn street art walking tour.

Bushwick Street Art Map

You could go on a Bushwick graffiti tour to get information about the neighborhood and art as you tour it, or you can go take a look on your own.

This little piece of Bushwick is a lovely way to spend a FREE afternoon in New York City, which doesn’t come by too often. Here’s a Bushwick street art map so you can walk exactly where I did.

The enclosed area is the Bushwick Collective section you’re probably looking for, but the other lines indicate random pops of street art.

Although you can walk around to see all this Brooklyn street art for free, you might want more context. For example, with a tour guide, you could learn how to identify an artist’s personal style or the history of street art in New York City.

New York City’s street art scene is mind blowing to say the least and pays homage to it’s cultural diversity. Bushwick Murals: The story behind Bushwick Art Collective

Bushwick murals are in the NYC borough of Brooklyn (walking the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the many incredible things to do in New York City ). When I was researching for street art in Bushwick ,  I got totally hooked onto the story behind how the Bushwick collective came into being. This 2012 initiative to adorn an industrial district with some of the best street art in the world was the brainchild of Joseph Ficalora , a neighborhood business owner.

The art is dedicated to his deceased parents and brings artists of all levels from all over the globe to make Bushwick, Brooklyn the ultimate street art destination ! None of the street art is permanent and stays around for 12 month or so at most. The Bushwick Brooklyn street art collection keeps on growing with new murals being added periodically.

How to get to the Bushwick art collective: Public Transportation and tour options

Bushwick murals can be easily accessed by public transportation or shared rides like Lyft. Since we stayed at the East Village Hotel in Manhattan   ( best value for awesome location aka right in the heart of the bustling East Village which is a culinary hotspot in NYC ), we got to the Bushwick collective   in Brooklyn via Lyft.

On our way back we simply took the NYC subway to return to Manhattan. Navigating the subway can be really tricky so here is a helpful guide on how to use the NYC subway . The Bushwick neighborhood is accessible by the L line to Jefferson street station and takes about 15-30 min to reach from Manhattan depending on where you are on the island.

Once you get there, you will be welcomed by rows and rows of gigantic   murals   created primarily by aerosol spraying technique which are all within walking distance. Since this amalgamation of Bushwick wall art is totally public, it is open 24/7. You can arrange for a Brooklyn street art tour  but I would encourage you to take your sweet time and savor the murals as you walk around.

A good 2-3 hours on foot should be enough to check off all the murals on your street art Bushwick list. The  Free tours by foot   is a good resource for  Bushwick street art tours , directions and transportation to Bushwick  art collective , street art artists info and handy Bushwick street art maps .

What kind of Bushwick street art and graffiti will you see?

The Bushwick murals and wall art will absolutely blow your mind away with their color, creativity and execution. The themes are varied and range from cartoon figures, to stark black and white imagery to subtle and not so subtle takes on the current social and political situation in USA.

Some of my favorite Bushwick street art included the “Diversity is Hope” and “Everything is not OK” murals as well as the naughty gummy bear arrested by the NYC police department (see collages below). NYC being home to the current President of the United States (you can see here this cheeky piece of work by Damien Mitchell, the celebrated Australian street artist who has contributed to the Bushwick murals) , I did expect the Bushwick street art collective to have more politically charged murals.

Nevertheless, I was pretty happy with what I saw and went shutterbug happy clicking the murals around me. I hope these photos that I have clicked help you on a virtual Bushwick street art tour ! We went to the Bushwick neighborhood in the morning (before lunch) and did not see major crowds around the murals at all.

As a result, I got a lot of great unobstructed shots of Bushwick  graffiti . My Bushwick street art map  is based on my location jotting during my self guided tour (scroll below to see) and provides guidance on the major streets where we spotted the murals.

These Bushwick murals were clicked using my Sony a7RII mirrorless camera  with a 35mm lens while the Los Angeles street art tour and Austin murals were photographed using my Canon Rebel T2i with a 50mm prime lens .

Bushwick street art tour is definitely one of the must do activities for any art lover visiting NYC. Besides this, there are a ton of things to do in the borough of Brooklyn itself as you can read on Time Out New York’s post .

Wow!! This seriously blew me away. I would go back to NYC just to see this. Seriously quality art here! Thanks for letting us know!

WOW!! These are incredible! I was just in Brooklyn last month – I wish I had known to look for these. Next time for sure!

I went to a wedding in Bushwick in August and recognize several of these murals! The crazy thing about Bushwick, though, is that the art is always changing–my friends live right across the street from Roberta’s, and every six months or so when we go out to visit them, the murals across the way are completely different! So crazy to think of destroying something so beautiful to make way for yet another temporary art installation.

Whether you're a first time visitor or seasoned New Yorker we promise you're gonna have a blast!

http://brooklynunpluggedtours.com/

The secret is out: Brooklyn is hot!

Brooklyn, New York City has become a foremost capitol of creativity, culture and innovation. Its vibrant neighborhoods brim with energy; on streets packed with restaurants, boutiques and galleries. Skilled artisans craft tasty, healthy and sustainable culinary creations. Artists experiment with new mediums and designs. And street fashion sets trends across the globe, fueled by independent jewelry, accessory and fashion designers.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn's immigrant communities and ethnic enclaves are a kaleidoscope of diversity: offering tastes, sounds, and smells from every corner of the planet. Their ambitious residents have brought traditions, customs and culture from their native countries, contributing ever further to the vast melting pot of the borough's neighborhoods.

The lure and attraction of Brooklyn lies in its deep and proud history, which becomes increasingly more recognized and cherished. It has played a pivotal role in shaping the face of both the United States and the world. The pinnacle of Brooklyn's historical greatness was the Industrial Age of manufacturing, when it produced more than half of the supply of sugar for the entire world, and was the breeding ground for such inventions as chewing gum, air conditioning, and the teddy bear. Its mighty factories were fueled by waves of immigrants who settled its districts and called them home. These bootstrap communities produced more influential, legendary and infamous people than can be counted: Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Al Capone, Michael Jordan, Jay-Z and more...

Brooklyn's blend of modern innovation, international culture and longstanding heritage creates a unique, unparalleled environment. One which possesses a distinct flavor and character that can be found nowhere else on earth.

The mission of Brooklyn Unplugged Tours is to reveal this environment and make it accessible to all, from first time visitors to natives of New York City. We aim to present Brooklyn in a way that will immerse, fascinate and provoke thought in anyone, regardless of their background or where they are from. In addition to exploring Brooklyn as it is today, we seek to share an understanding of its past, and then perhaps get an idea of what lies ahead in its future.

We do not merely observe as outsiders, but actively participate. The experiences we provide are interactive and encompass all five human senses: sight, taste, sound, smell and touch.

Our tours are entertaining, educational, tasty and most of all FUN!
