Furebergsfossen waterfall, Norway

Your cruise at a glance

Hand-crafted highlights.

Beautiful waterways and idyllic villages combine on this exploration of the Norwegian Fjords, with Borealis set to cruise the orchard-lined Hardangerfjord, spend a day amidst the mountainous scenery of Ulvikafjord and make a special detour along Maurangerfjord to capture the sprawling Fureberg Waterfall. You can experience the Norwegian cultural concept of outdoor living (friluftsliv) by engaging in nature-bound pursuits, from foraging and hiking in the fjordland mountains to boating, fishing and kayaking on the pristine waters. Enrich your journey even further by delving into the region’s geological wonders, from cascading waterfalls to the intricate formations of the fjords themselves.

Views of Hardangerfjord, Norway

Landscapes of the fjords

Hardangerfjord is one of Norway's most picturesque waterways, renowned for its lush green landscapes and fruit orchards, and as Borealis glides along its serene waters, you'll also be able to admire breath-taking scenery of craggy mountains and cascading waterfalls. Your ship will divert into the size-restricted Maurangerfjord to the thundering falls of Fureberg, so you can see them from as close as possible, while Ulvik is your gateway to Kjosfoss Waterfall. From Eidfjord, do take time to discover Voringfoss Waterfall to experience it at its most powerful.

Kayaking in the Norwegian fjords

The Norwegian concept of Friluftsliv

Embrace the Norwegian concept of spending time in nature, so we've designed this Borealis cruise for you to fully immerse yourself in outdoor activities as much as possible. Eidfjord is the ideal destination in which to enjoy boating or kayaking on the calm, clear waters of Hardangerfjord, while Ulvik offers the opportunity to experience foraging on a tour to discover just how many edible plants are growing in the wild that can be used for nutrition. Both Eidfjord and Ulvik have spectacular hiking trails, with the latter offering spectacular views of the Osafjord.

Scenic cruising in Lysefjord, Norway

Fjord Geology

Formed over millions of years by the combination of glacial activity, tectonic forces and erosion, the fjords of Norway have been carved into deep valleys, flanked by steep mountainous terrain and hanging valleys where waterfalls cascade into the waters below. The magnificent Fureberg waterfall, located on an arm of Maurangerfjord, thunders down the steep hillside into the fjord, where your Captain will manoeuvre Borealis close enough for you to feel the spray on your face. Pulpit Rock (Preikstolen) stands over 600 metres tall, watching over you as you sail along the deep blue waters of Lysefjord, while the intriguing Kjeragbolten - a giant rock wedged between a crevice on Mount Kjerag, can also be seen.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will be advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

Coastal cruise in Norway

Geirangerfjord, norway in a nutshell®, flåm railway (flåmsbana), fjords in norway, aurlandsfjord, seven sisters & bridal veil.

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

Day 1: Welcome to Norway

After collecting your luggage and leaving the airport, make your way to your accommodation in Oslo city centre. You could opt to take a taxi or use public transport, but for a more direct and comfortable ride, we could arrange a private airport transfer for you.

If you arrive early in the day, spend the afternoon walking through the city. You could stroll along the Karl Johans gate main street, along the Aker Brygge marina and past the beautiful Oslo Opera House. You could also choose to visit the beautiful Vigeland Sculpture Park, tour the Royal Palace , explore the Akershus fortress or view Oslo City Hall.

Other attractions include the Fram Museum , displaying a world-famous polar exploration ship, and the extensive collection of works by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch at the Munch Museum .

Spend the night in Oslo.

Day 2: Journey Over the Mountains

After breakfast, head to Oslo Central Station and board the Dovrebanen train. This train route passes over the  Dovre mountain  plateau, through historic towns and nature preservations. You’ll witness incredible variations in terrain and altitude along the way.

Arriving in Dombås, you will change trains and join the Raumabanen Railway. This is often called the most spectacular train line in Norway, with endless sights to enjoy. Look out for the train’s dramatic crossing of Kylling Bridge, with the thundering waters of Vermafossen falls below.

The train takes you to Åndalsnes , where you will disembark. From here, board a bus to journey past more dramatic landscapes on your way to the vibrant port town of Ålesund .

Spend the night in Ålesund.

Day 3: The Geirangerfjord Cruise

Today, you get to explore the majestic Geirangerfjord by cruise. This 3-hour boat tour includes an immersive audio guide and will take you on a journey through 3 fjords and their spectacular landscapes.

Geirangerfjord is UNESCO-protected, and features peaceful waters framed by towering mountains. Look out for magnificent waterfalls, including the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil . The boat tour includes a stop in Geiranger village, an idyllic location with lush scenery and well-maintained walking trails.

In the afternoon, arrive back in Ålesund. Tonight, you will join either a Hurtigruten or Havila Voyages overnight cruise. The departure will be after midnight, so spend this evening relaxing in Ålesund.

Spend the night on board the coastal cruise .

If you would like to relax in your own room for the evening before your cruise departs, you can request a late check-out of your hotel. This will be at an additional cost.

For more information on which cruise you will be joining, check out our Essential Info section below.

Day 4: Sail to historic Bergen

During the night, your cruise will call at the towns of Torvik, Maløy and Florø as the route weaves through islets and stunning landscapes.

Finally, you’ll come into view of your destination – Bergen . Here you will disembark to enjoy some leisure time in the “Capital of the Fjords”. Despite being an international city, Bergen has all the charms of a small town.

Here you’ll find  Bryggen , a city quarter with remarkably preserved old houses. Elsewhere, explore the lively fish and flower market, or board the  Fløibanen Funicular  to the peak of Mount Fløyen.

At city level, discover Bergen’s museums. Some of the most popular include Troldhaugen, a living museum dedicated to composer Edvard Grieg, and KODE , Scandinavia’s largest museum of art, craft, design and music.

Spend the night in Bergen.

Day 5: Norway in a Nutshell by land and sea

Today, you embark on one of the most scenic parts of your adventure so far. First, say goodbye to Bergen and catch the early Bergensbanen train, travelling past majestic mountains and plunging valleys to the town of Voss.

At Voss, change to a bus through more vibrant landscapes to  Gudvangen harbour. Here, you will board a spellbinding 2-hour fjord cruise to  Flåm , sailing through  Nærøyfjord , the narrowest fjord in all of Europe. This UNESCO World Heritage site is part of Sognefjord , Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. Prepare to be awe-struck by mighty peaks, tumbling waterfalls and small farms dotting the mountainsides.

Finally, the boat sails up  Aurlandsfjord  to Flåm, a charming village, where you will spend the evening.

Spend the night in Flåm.

For a more comfortable experience, we recommend booking a luggage transfer for the journey between Bergen and Oslo.

Day 6: The Flåm Railway Experience

Enjoy a leisurely morning exploring Flåm, taking in its natural beauty and enjoying some of its cultural offerings. Visit the Flåm Railway Museum to learn about the construction of this world-famous train route. Or make your way up to the Stegastein viewing platform, 650 metres (2132 feet) above Aurlandsfjord.

This afternoon, you’ll experience the famous Flåm Railway . Enjoy spectacular scenery as the train climbs 900 metres (2,952 feet) in just 20 kilometres (12 miles), with photo stops along the way. The winding train track leads to Myrdal Station, where you’ll disembark.

In Myrdal, switch to the Bergensbanen train, which will carry you over the mountainous rooftop of Norway. Along the way, you’ll pass through the charming villages of  Geilo  and Gol, before you arrive in Oslo.

Enjoy your last evening exploring Norway’s capital.

Day 7: Departure from Oslo

It’s time to say goodbye to Norway! If your flight is in the afternoon, you could spend a few last hours shopping for souvenirs, visiting one of Oslo’s museums or just strolling through the charming city centre.

When it’s nearly time for your flight, take the Airport Express Train or call a taxi. Alternatively, we would be happy to arrange a private airport transfer for you. If you’d like to spend more time in Norway’s dynamic capital, you can easily add additional nights in Oslo during the booking process.

Yes, you can customise this tour online. During the booking process, you can add extra nights to your itinerary as well as optional day trips, excursions and upgrades.

If you have something specific in mind, get in touch with your travel consultant and they’ll create your dream trip.

You will travel via train and bus from Oslo to Ålesund. The first leg of the journey will see you boarding the Dovrebanen train to Dombås. The scenic ride passes over the Dovre mountain plateau and through historic towns and nature reserves.

For the second leg of the journey, you’ll switch train to hop onboard the Raumabanen Railway to Åndalsnes. This is often referred to as the most spectacular train line in Norway. Finally, from Åndalsnes, you’ll board a 2-hour bus ride to Ålesund.

You’re sure to see some spectacular landscapes during your day of travel. You’ll also get to admire the diversity of Norway’s terrain and scenery.

This itinerary includes a cruise along the magnificent Geirangerfjord on the ship MS Geirangerfjord II. The journey stretches 120 kilometres (75 miles) each way, departing from the Ålesund harbour station, Rutebilstasjonen.

Departure times from Ålesund vary depending on the time of year, but usually start between 8:30-10:30 AM. You will be back in Ålesund in the evening between 5-7 PM.

You'll also be able to spend some time in Geiranger. This is usually between 2-3 hours.

On board the ship, you will be able to purchase coffee and light refreshments. Make sure to enjoy the spectacular views as you travel into the fjord.

On this tour, you will hop aboard a coastal cruise, provided by either Hurtigruten or Havila Voyages, along the Norwegian west coast. You’ll be staying in your own cabin with private facilities.

Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages operate along the same route on different days. Your personal travel consultant will book the cruise on your behalf in light of your tour’s start date and the rest of your itinerary.

If you are travelling on a Hurtigruten cruise: Hurtigruten ships offer a classic Norwegian experience, with cosy cabins furnished with either twin or double beds. Your room will be between 8-11 square metres (86-118 square feet) and will always include a port hole, but please note that a view from the window cannot be guaranteed.

Instead, Hurtigruten ships all offer comfortable viewing decks, dining areas and lounges. This way, you can spend your mornings and evenings relaxing with incredible views of the passing Norwegian coastline.

If you are travelling on a Havila Voyages cruise: Havila Voyages ships are the newer cruise liners on the block. Their modern cabins are furnished with either twin or double beds and are all around 15 square metres (161 feet). Your room will have a port hole and a small sofa so you can watch the views of ocean or coastline go past. Or, head up to the lounge, restaurant or viewing deck to see more of the passing fjords.

When you book your Norway adventure, your travel consultant will arrange the details of your cruise departure in light of your tour’s start date. They’ll then include all the information in your personal itinerary.

If you have a specific cruise in mind, check out our  list of Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages sailing dates  in 2024 and 2025.

Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages are shipping companies which transport travellers along the Norwegian coastline. Both offer incredible views of spectacular fjords and charming coastal villages as they journey towards Norway’s north or south.

That said, both companies have their own histories and distinct characters. Your cruise experience will vary depending on which company you’re travelling with. We’ve broken down the key differences below so you know what to expect on your seafaring adventure.

Hurtigruten dates back to 1893, and many of its ships were originally used to transport post. Due to the historic nature of these cruises, each one differs in size and your room’s port hole window may not have a view. Instead, you can expect a cosy cabin stay, with access to charming lounges and restaurant areas that have floor-to-ceiling windows.

Havila Voyages are a newer company, with a focus on eco-friendly and sustainable travel. Their rooms are slightly larger and have views of either the ocean or the coastline from their port holes. Just like Hurtigruten, they offer on-board facilities such as relaxing lounges, restaurants and viewing decks.

Whichever company you travel with, you’ll enjoy a private cabin with either a double or twin beds and ensuite facilities. Please bear in mind that we cannot guarantee your cabin number for coastal voyages shorter than 5 nights.

When your ship is in port for longer than 30 minutes, you’ll have the option to disembark. Optional shore excursions will also be available on your journey, so make sure to pre-book any activities that interest you.

If you would rather fly than join the Hurtigruten cruise, you can select a domestic flight to Bergen during the booking process.

With this option, you will spend a night in either Ålesund or Bergen instead of the accommodation on board Hurtigruten. Your travel consultant will make the best choice according to your itinerary.

This tour includes the famous Norway in a Nutshell® tour from Bergen to Oslo. This is one of Norway’s most iconic journeys. You’ll travel by train, bus and ferry, seeing beautiful landscapes of steep mountains, frosty waterfalls, shimmering fjords, charming villages and scenic coastline.

The first leg of the journey is from Bergen to Flåm. Then you’ll travel from Flåm to Oslo. The duration of both days will be around 6 hours.

The connections will be announced and clearly explained in your travel documents. You will receive a ticket with all the information about transfer points and timings with your final travel documents.

You can book an optional luggage transfer for the journey. If you do this, you’ll want a backpack for your daily essentials and one-night stay. Your luggage will be waiting for you at your destination.

If you do not book a luggage transfer, you will have to carry your bags between the train, boat and bus. All connections will be within easy reach and there will be storage available for your luggage during each leg of the journey.

On your Norway tour, you’ll stay in accommodation that’s been hand-picked by our travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and our personal experience.

During the booking process, you can select whether you want Comfort Plus or Superior accommodation. Comfort Plus usually consists of standard rooms in good quality and comfortable 3-star hotels. Superior is standard rooms in 4-star hotels combined with Superior rooms in premium 3-star hotels.

You will also be able to choose between single, double or triple rooms. Please note that in Norway room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double bed often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra single bed, rollaway or sofa bed. And single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

If you have anything specific in mind, please contact us to discuss customising your accommodation options.

By booking with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that there’s always someone there for you throughout your trip.

For support and advice during the day, you can call our office. And if anything unexpected happens outside working hours, you can reach us on our 24/7 helpline.

During your tour, there will always be a travel expert on call to handle any unforeseen situations, such as unusual weather or events.

If you have a passport from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you won’t need a visa to visit Norway. This visa-free entry is valid for up to 90 days.

Visiting from another country? You can find out whether you require a visa to enter Norway on the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Select your home country to view details. If you do require a visa, you will be directed to your local embassy website to learn about the visa requirements.

Your passport must also be valid for at least 3 months from your departure from Norway. It’s good to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

Travelling with your kids? No problem! You'll be able to enter your children’s ages during the booking process.

For infants (0 to 2 years old), please let us know in the details if you’d like a baby cot.

For kids 3-11 years old, we’ll automatically book an extra bed for your trip.

Only you can pick the best time to visit Norway for your trip. It’ll depend on how much time you have to explore and what you want to see and do in Norway.

During the summer months, June , July and August , you’ll have the warmest temperatures and longest daylight hours of the year. This is ideal for outdoor excursions and taking full advantage of your days for sightseeing.

If you’d like to experience the top attractions with fewer visitors around then you could book a summer itinerary in May or September . These shoulder season months generally have more tour and attraction availability.

Please note that if you travel in spring, end of March through April , you’ll find that many attractions and museums are operating on reduced winter hours.

The winter months are also popular, but generally quieter. Travel to Norway at this time of year to see snowy mountains, cruise along frosty fjords and chase the magnificent northern lights.

If you head north in December and January , you could experience the polar night. At this time of year, the conditions are also ideal for winter activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling and more.

Read more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

From Oslo in the south, Norway stretches hundreds of kilometres into the Arctic Circle. The country is so long that it spans the latitudes of 58°N to 81°N. For that reason, daylight hours vary greatly depending on where you’ll be visiting. That said, summer in Norway brings long days with plenty of daylight.

In the south, around Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger, you’ll experience 15–20 hours of daylight. If you visit the north, including locations such as Tromsø and Kirkenes, you can expect 20–24 hours of daylight.

In fact, within the Arctic Circle, from mid-May to late July, you’ll experience the midnight sun. This is when the sun never fully sets.

Norway’s long summer days give you plenty of time to explore. That said, you may want to pack a sleeping mask if you are a light sleeper or tend to wake up at dawn.

Find out what the daylight hours will be during the month of your visit in this guide to time and daylight in Norway .

During the summer months, you can expect fairly stable weather in Norway. That said, because the country spans such a large distance from north to south, temperatures are likely to vary depending on your location.

For example, the west coast is usually warmer thanks to the Gulf Stream, while the far north is usually cooler.

The months of June, July and August boast the warmest weather of the year. In Oslo, you can expect average temperatures around 16°C (61°F), with potential highs of 20–25°C (68–77°F). In Bergen, it is closer to 13°C (55°F) and in the north, around Tromsø, you can expect temperatures around 10°C (41-50°F)

It’s also good to know that weather conditions are often changeable in Northern Europe, so you should come ready for sun, rain and wind. For more information on the local climate, read the page Norway weather conditions .

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

Summertime is the most stable time of year in Norway. That said, you should still be ready to experience all seasons in one day. Especially if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors, you’ll want to pack for a combination of weather conditions.

Bring lighter clothes for the warmer, sunny days, and extra layers for chilly nights in the mountains or for taking in the view from cruise ship decks.

Here is an essential summer packing list for your trip to Norway:

  • Shorts and trousers
  • Short and long sleeve tops
  • At least one warm jumper or fleece
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Light gloves, hat and scarf
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
  • Sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen
  • Eye mask to sleep despite the long daylight hours
  • Electronic gear such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • A backpack for easy access to daily essentials
  • and don’t forget your camera!

An umbrella can also come in handy. If you are a wildlife watcher, you may wish to bring binoculars.

For more information, check out this Norway packing list .

When you travel with Nordic Visitor, breakfast at your Norway accommodation is always included.  For the rest of your meals, the amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 100–400 NOK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 500–1,000 NOK. Meanwhile, at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 1,500 NOK or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

We recommend waiting for a confirmation from your travel consultant to ensure your travel dates are available. You’ll then be able to purchase your flights with confidence.

If you like to plan well ahead, you’ll find that it’s possible to book many tours for the following year. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us .

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

We aim to complete bookings within a few weeks. During this time we take care of booking your accommodation, activities, and transport, confirming all parts of your journey. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip.

When we get back to you might depend slightly on how far ahead you’ve booked your travels and other tours running at the time.

No need! Nordic Visitor is already working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours.

Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

If you have any questions before your trip, you can get in touch with our Norway travel experts. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Norway Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

  • Which currency is used in Norway and which credit cards are widely accepted
  • What kind of electric adapters or converters you’ll need
  • Which languages do Norwegian speak (yes, English is one of them!)
  • How to get a refund on tax-free shopping
  • As well as tipping, buying snacks, and other useful information

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything.

Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll send you e-copies of your travel documents. This will include your personalised itinerary, our Norway Travel Guide and your service vouchers. We recommend printing your tickets and vouchers to bring with you to Norway.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will usually need to check out from your room around 10–11 AM. If you’re staying in town longer, you will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before making your way to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Euro (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. This means conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

One of the most breathtaking experiences of my life

I had a fantastic holiday, even with a lot of rain. The booking agent was incredibly helpful, all the travelling arrangements were perfect, and the accommodation was just right. The silent electric catamaran tour of the deep fjord was one of the most breathtaking experiences of my life. Thank you Nordic Visitor!

Jenny, United Kingdom

Best of the norwegian fjords – express, september 2023, we greatly enjoyed our time in norway.

We were disappointed that we could not do the first section by train but understood that this was outside of Nordic Visitor's control. The service provided during our tour was excellent. We would have liked more information about Viking history and an opportunity to see native wildlife. The timing between Ålesund and Bergen was difficult, as we were very tired. Perhaps an extra day at Ålesund would have been better. Finally, we thought the opportunity to have an English-language guide in some places would have been very valuable. But all up we greatly enjoyed our time in Norway.

Kerrie, Australia

Best of the norwegian fjords – express, august 2023, just wonderful.

I will use you again and have already recommended you. Just wonderful.

Marta, United States

What a great way to experience norway.

Great experience - Liza was very helpul at every stage from planning through the actual travel experience. The one hiccup we had related to a transportation issue due to bad weather was resolved quickly and totally to everyone's satisfaction. The hotels chosen were high quality and very comfortable. It was great fun catching up with others doing the same itinerary and totally enhanced the Nutshell experience. What a great way to experience Norway!

Richard, United States

Perfect for us.

Our trip was perfect for us! Being able to not have to plan and book hotels and transportation while getting to see and experience the very best of what Norway has to offer, was just amazing! We enjoyed the cities and towns while we were there. It was nice having that time to ourselves.

Julie, United States

Fantastic communication.

Fantastic communication! There was an extreme weather warning whilst we were on our trip that meant trains were cancelled. Nordic Visitor were amazing arranging an alternative to get to our destination so we could still enjoy the holiday.

It means midnight sun in the summer, while winter days are merely a shade less dark than night-time and, possibly, Northern Lights in the evenings. Up here in the polar landscape, nature is at its harshest and most desolate, but between bare plains and rugged cliffs people cling on and reap nature's bounty. You can also have a taste of the catch. How about some king crab?

You can go as far as the border on one of our excursions, or how about a visit to the Snowhotel where everything is made of ice and snow?

  • Breakfast at the North Cape Plateau, Honningsvåg
  • Midnight concert in the Arctic Cathedral, Tromsø

Day 9 Ports: Finnsnes - Harstad - Risøyhamn - Sortland - Stokmarknes - Svolvær - Stamsund

We return to the wild, idyllic Lofoten Islands . Beneath the jagged mountains lie chalky white sandy beaches and fishing villages with a vibrant fishing industry and locals using the coastal ships for everyday trips and transport. If the weather permits, we will enter the narrow Trollfjord. There is a strong possibility of spotting sea eagles here.

  • A taste of Lofoten, Harstad

But you can still see the Northern Lights in the winter, and it is never completely dark during the summer nights. Here you sail past a myriad of small islands, islets and skerries and past the special mountain, Trollhatten, which has a hole in the middle. If you wish, you can also go on the trip to the mountain and enter the hole.

  • Hiking at Torghatten, Brønnøysund
  • The Norwegian salmon adventure, Brønnøysund
  • Experience the World Heritage listed Vega Islands, Brønnøysund

You can disembark in Kristiansund and be driven along the Atlantic Ocean Road, which has been called the world's most beautiful drive. The road meanders along islets and skerries, and afterwards you can re-embark in Molde.

Welcome to the Arctic!

Today we cross the Arctic Circle , marking your best chance to see the Northern Lights. We mark the occasion with a fun Arctic Circle ceremony on deck.

Forces of nature

Ørnes is the site of Norway’s second-largest glacier, Svartisen .

We then sail along the beautiful coast of Helgeland to Bodø , where you can experience Saltstraumen , the world’s most powerful maelstrom, by small boat.

That afternoon, the 1,000 metre-high Lofoten Wall looms on the horizon, ushering us towards majestic granite cliffs and white sandy beaches.

Meet the Vikings

At  Stamsund , visit the Lofotr Viking Museum , where you are welcomed into the chieftain’s house for a real Viking feast.

Going organic

Between Stamsund and  Svolvær , you can experience life on an organic herb and cheese farm, or visit the Lofoten’s only craft brewery, in Svolvær.

As we sail through the narrow Raftsund, we stop at the entrance to Trollfjord, a dramatic natural wonder that should not be missed.

In the Footsteps of Polar Heroes

We briefly dock at Risøyhamn , Harstad and Finnsnes in the morning.

Polar history and beer

We then sail to the Arctic exploration capital of  Tromsø for a prolonged stay. Join our `Polar History Walk´ in winter to learn more about explorers and Arctic hunters, and taste beer from the world’s northernmost brewery.

Beyond your imagination

Throughout the winter, complete your stay in Tromsø with a thrilling dog-sledding ride , as huskies pull you over the frozen landscape past stunning views of the snowy plateaus. The only light during the polar night comes from headlamps, the starry sky, and, if we’re lucky, the magical Northern Lights.

Why not have some winter fun by joining a cross-country skiing or snowshoeing adventure , or go deep-sea fishing on an Arctic fjord? All year, you can join the Hurtigruten Guides for hikes and discover more of the Tromsø area.

Streets with Russian names

The Russian border is a just few kilometres from Kirkenes and you’ll notice local road signs in both Norwegian and Russian. There are many ways to visit the Russian frontier: canoeing, hiking or bus.

Winter wonder

Kirkenes offers a wide range of classic winter activities, like dog-sledging, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and visiting an Arctic Ice Dome.

Southbound and down

As the ship starts its voyage south, remember that you’ve seen only half of what Norway’s coastline offers. The ports we visited by night going north are now seen by day.

Lofoten, Where Nature Amazes

We arrive in  Harstad , where you can join the excursion A Taste of Vesterålen .

Amazing scenery

The island groups of Lofoten and Vesterålen offer some of the most stunning natural scenery of the entire voyage. Lofoten is renowned for its steep mountains, sandy beaches, wild nature and picturesque fishing villages.

Hurtigruten’s birthplace

We make a short stop at Risøyhamn , to deliver passengers, groceries and mail, and then continue to Stokmarknes , where Hurtigruten was founded in 1893.

Go ashore and visit the Hurtigruten Museum . Continuing south, we slip through a passage into the narrow Raftsund, past peaks rising 1,000 metres from the sea.

Spectacular Trollfjord

We now reach spectacular Trollfjord, only 2 km long, 100 m wide and surrounded by majestic mountains. If possible, we sail inside, where the dramatic landscape inspires images of fairy tales and trolls. Just north, you can opt to see sea eagles up close by boat.

Across the Arctic Circle

Celebrate crossing the Arctic Circle with a 'taste' of Arctic tradition – a fun ceremony highlighted by a spoonful of cod liver oil.

Mountain with a hole

As we sail along the Helgeland coast, you’ll see the strange mountain Torghatten, famous for its distinctive hole in the centre. The opening is 160 m long, 35 m high and 20 m wide, and was created during the ice age. If the weather allows, join a hike with your guides up the mountain.

Myths and legends

We also sail past the Seven Sisters mountain range – with peaks up to 1,100 m high. The story goes that seven beautiful troll sisters got caught out at sunrise and turned to stone, thus the seven beautiful peaks.

UNESCO heritage

We next make a short stop at Nesna , before moving on to  Sandnessjøen .
