Skydance was founded in 2010 with David Ellison’s ambitious vision to establish a diversified media company to create high-quality content and engaging experiences for a global audience. Skydance’s independence, versatility and multi-platform approach have propelled the Company’s growth in live-action features, television, animation, interactive and new media. Today, more than 500 colleagues across two continents share David’s vision and, together, have expanded Skydance’s portfolio, creating a world-class studio on the forefront of where entertainment is heading.

The name Skydance comes from David’s love of aviation. An accomplished pilot, he took inspiration from flying aerobatics known as “skydancing” – giving his new company a name to evoke limitless possibilities.

During these early days, when the company was based out of the hangar at the Santa Monica airport, Skydance secured its first notable partnership, with Paramount Pictures, to finance and produce some of the world’s most legendary franchises.

The company’s first feature film, True Grit , was directed by the Coen Brothers, and went on to receive 10 Academy Award nominations, becoming the highest-grossing western film at the time.

The action escalated with Skydance’s next film:  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol , where Tom Cruise held audiences on the edge of their seats as he dangled 2,700 feet high on the side of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. At that time,  Ghost Protocol  was the highest grossing film in the series – which is now currently in production on the seventh and eighth installments.

Skydance teamed up with Tom Cruise again the following year to bring Lee Child’s best-selling book series  Jack Reacher  to the big screen with Cruise starring as the hard-hitting vigilante. Cruise not only mastered fight sequences that required unique street-fighting techniques but also did his own stunt driving behind the wheel of a 500 horsepower V8-powered Chevy Chevelle.

In just three years, Skydance reached a critical milestone: its first billion-dollar worldwide box office year. In addition to tentpole films  G.I. Joe: Retaliation  and the Brad Pitt-starring  World War Z , Skydance also produced another globally popular franchise with the release of  Star Trek Into Darkness .

Soon after, the Company launched its second pillar: Skydance Television, with the goal to expand the Company’s world-building with a slate of premium, elevated content scripted series across all genres and become a leading supplier to a wide range of global streamers, premium cable channels and networks.

Skydance Television quickly broke into producing scripted content, setting up its first comedy series,  Grace and Frankie , at Netflix.  Grace and Frankie  marked the burgeoning streamer’s first original comedy series and now after seven seasons, is set to become the longest running series on Netflix. Created by Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris, and starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen  Grace and Frankie , to-date, has earned 13 Primetime Emmy® and six Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for both Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and a Golden Globe nomination for Lily Tomlin.

Skydance Television’s first drama series, the critically acclaimed Manhattan , debuted on WGN America and went on to win a Primetime Emmy® Award – a first for the company.

The next installment of the blockbuster  Mission: Impossible franchise: Rogue Nation  premiered with Tom Cruise once again raising the bar by performing his own death-defying stunts, including hanging on the side of Airbus A400M as it takes off and flies 5,000 feet above the ground.  Terminator: Genisys  earned almost half a billion dollars at the global box office, allowing Skydance to claim a second billion-dollar milestone in only five years of operation.

Skydance continued its rapid expansion with the acquisition of a leading game developer to form Skydance Interactive. An avid gamer, it was always David’s ambition to expand Skydance’s world-building and storytelling into virtual reality and immersive gameplay. The interactive studio now brings together leading artists and technologists to create and publish original and IP-based virtual reality.

Fueling another year of box office success, the next chapters in two of the most popular franchises launched with Star Trek Beyond  and  Jack Reacher: Never Go Back  earning more than half a billion dollars worldwide.

David Ellison realized a lifelong passion by launching Skydance Animation. Its mission: to bring bold, meaningful and original stories to global audiences with a team exceptional artists, harnessing the power of animation to bring these worlds to life. The studio’s film slate now includes:  Luck , directed by Peggy Holmes;  Spellbound , directed by Vicky Jenson, with music and score composed by the legendary Alan Menken; and  Pookoo , written and directed by Nathan Greno. In addition to its films, the studio is expanding its reach by developing a number of high-quality series.

Skydance Interactive released its first virtual reality title:  Archangel . This mech-shooter game received multiple award nominations and wins, including Best in VR at E3.  Archangel  went on to launch a multiplayer update,  Archangel: Hellfire , adding new maps and mechs to this wildly popular title.

Skydance formed a strategic partnership with global communications giant Tencent, allowing the Company access to Tencent’s expertise and unmatched scale in China, the second largest media market in the world, further strengthening its global footprint. Tencent’s partnership allows for co-financing opportunities on all Skydance films in this critical global market, as well as marketing, distributing and merchandising efforts. The partnership also supports collaboration in television, interactive and virtual reality.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout hit theaters to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise’s history. Tom Cruise’s sixth turn as Ethan Hunt saw the daredevil actor perform a HALO jump from 25,000 feet in the air, among other jaw-dropping stunts.

Skydance Television continued its success, celebrating five series on-air and streaming with the season four premiere of Grace and Frankie  and the series premieres of epic sci-fi noir  Altered Carbon  on Netflix; spy-thriller  Condor  on AT&T Audience Network; revenge fantasy  Dietland  on AMC; and  Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan  on Amazon, which brought Tom Clancy’s legendary character Jack Ryan to television for the first time.

Skydance launched its fifth pillar with Skydance New Media, a division creating story-focused interactive experiences crafted as IP-based series with real-time computer graphic technology, where the user is fully in control of exploration, discovery, mystery, adventure and problem solving.

Skydance continued its longstanding relationship with Netflix with the premiere of the studio’s first streaming film, the explosive  6 Underground , starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Michael Bay. Within its first month of release, the massively popular action film was viewed by more than 83 million subscribers and went on to become one of the most popular films of all time on the streaming service.

That same year, Skydance teamed with visionary director Ang Lee for Gemini Man  starring Will Smith and reunited Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton for  Terminator: Dark Fat e helmed by Tim Miller and produced by series creator James Cameron.

With the release of  The Old Guard , Skydance landed its second movie on Netflix’s list of Top Ten Most Popular Films – and is notably the only studio to achieve this milestone to date.  The massively popular and critically acclaimed action movie was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka, and stars Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne.

To exceptional reviews from both fans and media alike, Skydance Interactive launched the top-selling, award-nominated The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners , a virtual reality game that allowed players to step through the flooded streets of post-apocalyptic New Orleans and has expanded to include The Meatgrinder horde mode update and addictive downloadable content.

Skydance Animation Madrid established to create one globally integrated studio across two continents, with more than 350 animation colleagues in Los Angeles and Madrid, solidifying the studio full oversight of all production aspects across features and television, ensuring the highest quality throughout the life cycle of each project.

Skydance announced a $275 million capital raise to further expand its scope across the entertainment landscape, led by strategic investments from RedBird Capital Partners, a private investor with extensive reach across sports and entertainment, and Korean powerhouse CJ ENM and its entertainment subsidiary Studio Dragon. The partnership with CJ ENM allows Skydance to collaborate across both studios’ vast libraries to create compelling stories with worldwide audience appeal in addition to further strengthening its presence within the APAC region.

Skydance continued to grow with the launch of Skydance Sports to develop premium sports related scripted and unscripted content, documentaries and events.

Skydance Animation formed a multi-year deal with Apple to produce premium features and theatrical quality series for the streamer. In addition, the studio’s inaugural animated short, Blush , premiered at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival. The animated short from writer/director Joe Mateo went on to receive critical praise as well as a number of accolades and nominations.

Skydance New Media announced a partnership with Marvel Entertainment for their first project: a narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game featuring a completely original story and take on the Marvel Universe.

The Tomorrow War starring Chris Pratt and Yvonne Strahovski premiered and became the most streamed movie during its opening weekend on Prime Video. The studio also released Without Remorse starring Michael B. Jordan and Snake Eyes starring Henry Golding.

Skydance Television released the first season of the epic sci-fi saga Foundation. The show quickly became a global hit and went on to receive two Primetime Emmy Nominations along with two VES Award wins.

The highly anticipated film  Top Gun: Maverick  broke numerous box office records including becoming the highest gross domestic film of the year. The film received universal praise from fans and critics and landed countless award nominations and wins. In addition to winning the Oscar for “Best Sound,” the film received a total of six nominations at the 95 th  Academy Awards including one for “Best Picture,” the film also won the People’s Choice Award for “Best Action Movie of 2022.”

Skydance expanded its relationship with Apple by entering into a multi-year, live action first look deal with the streamer to produce an annual slate of premium feature films.

Skydance premiered The Adam Project starring Ryan Reynolds on Netflix which became one of the streamer’s most popular films of all time and went on to win the People’s Choice Award for “Comedy Movie of 2022.” The studio also released The Greatest Beer Run Ever , starring Zac Efron and Russell Crowe and directed by Peter Farrelly, which debuted at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival before premiering on Apple TV+.

Skydance Television released the first season of Reacher on Prime Video. Based on the book series by Lee Child, Reacher was a massive hit and received a swift season two renewal. Paula Wagner: Tom Cruise’s Former Producing Partner Explains What A Producer Actually Does

Paula Wagner is an unfamiliar name for many film-goers, but if you watch the first three Mission:Impossible  films, you’ll notice they’re made by Cruise/Wagner Productions. Wagner formed the production company with Tom Cruise in 1993. The joint venture marked Wagner’s transition from casting agent at CAA to producer. And Cruise/Wagner Productions gave Cruise more control over projects he acted in, and more of the profits.

Under an exclusive deal with Paramount Pictures, Cruise/Wagner Productions produced every one of Cruise’s films from  Mission: Impossible (1996) to Valkyrie  (2008). Other features made by the production company included The Others, Without Limits, Narc, Shattered Glass, Elizabethtown,  and  Death Race. While Cruise/Wagner closed it’s doors in 2008, after Paramount boss, Sumner Redstone, pulled the plug on his relationship with the production company, both Cruise and Wagner were established as powerful producers, with the lucrative partnership grossing more than $2.9 billion at the box office.

Since then, Wagner has produced two other Cruise projects– Jack Reacher  and  Jack Reacher: Never Go Back– and moved into independent projects, including Chadwick Bosman’s Marshall (2017),  a well-received true story about the first black Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall.

Wagner, as a result, knows how to co-ordinate the full gamut of film projects from big budget to smaller character-focused productions. In the following video by CookeOpticsTV below, she explains what the role of the film producer is.

NEW YORK (AP) — The entertainment giant Paramount will merge with Skydance, closing out a decades-long run by the Redstone family in Hollywood and injecting desperately needed cash into a legacy studio that has struggled to adapt to a shifting entertainment landscape.

It also signals the rise of a new power player, David Ellison, the founder of Skydance and son of billionaire Larry Ellison, the founder of the software company Oracle.

Shari Redstone’s National Amusements has owned more than three-quarters of Paramount’s Class A voting shares through the estate of her late father, Sumner Redstone . She had battled to maintain control of the company that owns CBS, which is behind blockbuster films such as “Top Gun” and “The Godfather.”

Just weeks after turning down a similar agreement with Skydance, however, Redstone agreed to a deal on terms that had not changed much.

“Given the changes in the industry, we want to fortify Paramount for the future while ensuring that content remains king,” said Redstone, who is chair of Paramount Global.

The new combined company is valued at around $28 billion. In connection with the proposed transaction, which is expected to close in September 2025 pending regulatory approval, a consortium led by the Ellison family and RedBird Capital will be investing $8 billion.

Skydance, based in Santa Monica, California, has helped produce some major Paramount hits in recent years, including Tom Cruise films like “Top Gun: Maverick” and installments of the “Mission Impossible” series.

Skydance was founded in 2010 by David Ellison and it quickly formed a production partnership with Paramount that same year. If the deal is approved, Ellison will become chairman and chief executive officer of what’s being called New Paramount.

Ellison outlined the vision for New Paramount on a conference call about the transaction Monday. In addition to doubling down on core competencies, notably with a “creative first” approach, he stressed that the company needs to transition into a “tech hybrid” to stay competitive in today’s evolving media landscape.

“You’ve watched some incredibly powerful technology companies move into the ... media space and do so very successfully,” Ellison said. He added that it was “essential” for New Paramount to chart a similar course going forward.

That includes plans to “rebuild” the Paramount+ streaming service, Ellison noted — pointing to wider goals to expand direct-to-consumer business, such as increasing engagement time on the platform and reducing user churn. He also said that the company aims to transition to more cloud-based production and continue the use of generative artificial intelligence to boost efficiency.

Executives also outlined further restructuring plans for New Paramount on Monday’s conference call, with chairman of RedBird Sports and Media Jeff Shell noting that they had identified some $2 billion in cost efficiencies and synergies that they’ll “attempt to deliver pretty rapidly.”

Shell and others addressed the declining growth of linear TV. Flagship linear brands will continue to represent a big chunk of the company’s operations, but learning how to run this portion of business differently will be key, he said.

The on-again, off-again merger arrives at tumultuous time for Paramount, which has struggled to find its footing for years and its cable business has been hemorrhaging. In an annual shareholder meeting in early June, the company also laid out a restructuring plan that included major cost cuts.

Leadership at Paramount was also volatile earlier this year after its CEO Bob Bakish, following a number of disputes with Redstone, was replaced with an “office of the C.E.O,” run by three executives. Four company directors were also replaced.

Paramount is one of Hollywood’s oldest studios, dating back its founding in 1914 as a distributor. Throughout its rich history, Paramount has had a hand in releasing films — from “Sunset Boulevard” and “The Godfather,” to “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Titanic.”

The studio also distributed several early Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including “Iron Man” and “Thor,” before the Disney acquisition. In addition to “Mission: Impossible” and “Top Gun,” Paramount’s current franchises include “Transformers,” “Star Trek” and “Jackass.”

While Paramount has not topped the annual domestic box office charts for over a decade, the wild box office success of “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022 (nearly $1.5 billion worldwide) was an important boon to both movie theaters and the industry’s pandemic recovery.

Still, its theatrical output has declined somewhat in recent years. Last year it released only eight new movies and came in fifth place for overall box office at around $2 billion — behind Universal (24 films), Disney (17 films), Warner Bros. and Sony.

This year the release calendar is similarly modest, especially with the absence of “Mission: Impossible 8,” which was pushed to 2025 amid the strikes. The studio has had some successes, with “Bob Marley: One Love” and “A Quiet Place: Day One,” and still to come is Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel.

The National Association of Theatre Owners, a trade organization that represents over 35,000 screens in the U.S., said in a statement Monday that it plans to look closely at the details of the merger with an eye towards whether it will produce more or less theatrical releases.

“We are encouraged by the commitment that David Ellison and the Skydance Media team have shown to theatrical exhibition in the past,” said Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners. “A merger that results in fewer movies being produced will not only hurt consumers and result in less revenue, but negatively impact people who work in all sectors of this great industry – creative, distribution and exhibition.”

Sumner Redstone used National Amusements, his family’s movie theater chain, to build a vast media empire that included CBS and Viacom, which have merged and separated a number of times over the years. Most recently, the companies re-joined forces in 2019, undoing the split consummated in 2006. The company, ViacomCBS, changed its name to Paramount Global in 2022.

Under Sumner Redstone’s leadership, Viacom became one of the nation’s media titans, home to pay TV channels MTV and Comedy Central and movie studio Paramount Pictures.

It is a company with a rich history, as well as a deep bank of media assets, and Skydance wasn’t the only one to gun for Paramount in recent months — Apollo Global Management and Sony Pictures also made competing offers.

Late last year, Warner Bros. Discovery also made headlines for exploring a potential merger with Paramount. But by February, Warner had reportedly halted those talks.

Why Tom Cruise joining forces with Warner Bros. is a bigger deal than you think

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Tom Cruise has joined Warner Bros. to develop and produce feature films together. Sounds like a boring behind-the-scenes detail about film production, but it’s actually quite a significant move in the career of the world’s biggest action star.

Cruise, 61, who rose to fame in the 80s for starring in blockbusters like 1986’s Top Gun has gained a reputation in the 21st century as the last of the great action movie stars for his commitment to death-defying stunts and propping up the Mission Impossible series alongside hits like 2022’s sequel Top Gun: Maverick .

ESNS 2024 Preview: the massive music event taking over Groningen this January

A French film wreaked havoc in cinemas. Why is ‘Les SEGPA Au Ski’ so controversial?

For those in the know, they’ll be aware that Cruise has done a lot of these films through his own production company Cruise/Wagner Productions, started in 1993. Through Cruise/Wagner, the actor has produced all of the Mission Impossible films alongside playing the lead role, alongside the Jack Reacher series and other films.

Cruise is one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood and his films have grossed over $13 billion (nearly €12 billion) worldwide. Many of his most successful films have been produced alongside Paramount Pictures as a distributor. Paramount ended their 14-year relationship with Cruise in 2006 after Mission: Impossible III , but reunited in 2011 for the next film in the series, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol .

The announcement that Cruise has now tied his mast to the Warner Bros. ship is therefore a big boon for the production studio. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has said he wanted to work with more top talent both in front and behind the camera, and you can’t get much bigger than Cruise.

Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group’s Co-Chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy said: “We are thrilled to be working with Tom, an absolute legend in the film industry. Our vision, from day one, has been to rebuild this iconic studio to the heights of its glory days”.

De Luca and Abdy continued that when they first sat down with Zaslav, he told them: “We are on a mission to bring Warner Bros. back – we have the best resources, storytelling IP, and talent in the business – and we need to bring Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros!”

Cruise himself said that “I have great respect and admiration for David, Pam, Mike, and the entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery and their commitment to movies, movie fans, and the theatrical experience,” in a Warner Bros. press release. “I look forward to making great movies together!” he continued.

Zaslav's tenure as CEO of Warner Bros. has not been without controversy. Particularly for his decisions to slash budgets, removal of TV series from streaming ( Westworld ) and shelving films altogether ( Batgirl).

Batgirl movie shelved by Warner Bros.: a potential death knell for the superhero genre?

It’s unclear as of now how this deal between Cruise and Warner Bros. will manifest and what films will follow.

The actor-studio deal could also have wider ramifications around industry rumours that Warner Bros. and Paramount are considering a merger . Zaslav met Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish in December about a potential deal between the $29 billion (€26 billion) and $10 billion (€9 billion) companies, respectively.

  • Tom Cruise's recent deal with Warner Bros. Discovery allows him the freedom to work with other studios, indicating that he may be seeking a new home for his projects.
  • Paramount's handling of the release and budgeting issues of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One caused tensions between Cruise and the studio.
  • The success of Top Gun: Maverick did not alleviate the strain between Cruise and Paramount, and it's possible that the next installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise could be Cruise's last.

It's a very good time to be Tom Cruise . Arguably the biggest movie star working today, the actor recently signed a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to produce original and franchise films in which he will also star. The pact sounded like the next stage in his evolution to have a stronghold on an industry he undeniably loves. It also sounded like a plan for him to move on. Cruise, while not having a deal with Paramount Pictures, exclusive or otherwise, has made many of his recent movies with them, including the box office and critical behemoth that was Top Gun: Maverick and the Mission: Impossible films. His relationship with the studio appeared solid but digging deeper into how the release of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One was handled, it could appear that Cruise was possibly looking for a new home to do business, which could mean that the next installment of the Impossible franchise could be the last.

When the Warner Bros. Discovery deal was announced, one of the most significant pieces of news about it was that it was not an exclusive pact. Cruise is free to work with other studios on other projects should they not interfere with prior engagements. For Warner Bros., any deal with the actor would be a win-win. Despite coming off the massive success of Barbie , they're also still dealing with the stink of bad optics business moves (shelving films for tax write-offs) and expensive flops ( Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash ). Getting in line with the actor who became known for saving cinema during the post-pandemic box office courtesy of Top Gun: Maverick , could right many wrongs and put the studio back on track to its former greatness.

But what did it mean for Cruise? He had been seemingly happy doing business with Paramount since 1992, when his production company Cruise/Wagner entered a production deal leading to the first Mission: Impossible in 1996. That deal ended long ago, but they were still doing great business together. As it turns out, their deal began with Mission: Impossibl e, and it looks like cracks also started to appear due to the most recent installment of Mission: Impossible .

Tom Cruise's Issues With Paramount Actually Began with Top Gun: Maverick

Top gun: maverick.

Tom Cruise returns as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, and keeps pushing the envelope as a seasoned aviator for the Navy in this sequel to the original Top Gun film.

Let's rewind just a bit. The apparent issues between Cruise and Paramount go back to Top Gun: Maverick . What possible problems could arise from a movie that made $1.5 billion worldwide and also received awards attention, including a Best Picture Oscar nomination? Even though the film eventually hit screens in May 2022, the movie was initially slated for release in July 2019. The project was then delayed until June 2020 to complete shooting on several complex action sequences.

Then, the COVID-19 pandemic happened, and moviegoing as we knew it collapsed. Movie theaters shuttered worldwide, and studios scrambled to reschedule their projects, hoping the pandemic would wane. Top Gun: Maverick suffered many delays due to this as Paramount began to shuffle it around the schedule, but in the middle of this shuffle, the studio also considered a streaming or VOD release for the project to finally get the film out. This sparked the first round of tension between Cruise and Paramount.

Will Tom Cruise Ever Win an Oscar?

If Tom Cruise wants to win a competitive Oscar, he needs to change the course of his career.

Cruise has been adamant in his stance on his films. At the Cannes premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, the actor stated, "I make movies for the big screen." This is why, while Paramount was willing to consider a streaming launch for Maverick during the pandemic, Cruise was not. For the studio, this had to be stressful because they were dealing with the unprecedented results of the pandemic while also bleeding money.

Delaying a film and rescheduling it isn't a free endeavor. A new marketing campaign has to be generated, which increases the costs of a project that is already pricey. Possibly dealing with any other actor, Paramount could've convinced them to release the film for home viewing, but not Cruise. The actor was willing to wait this out, no matter the costs, which proved to be a battle—a battle that Cruise ultimately won, which ended up being financially beneficial for all involved.

You would think that after the success of Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount would be all about "in Cruise we trust," but they again butted heads while making Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One , which was initially announced alongside Dead Reckoning Part Two . Much like films awaiting release due to COVID-19, movies in production were also affected. Filming on all projects was halted immediately due to the pandemic, including Mission: Impossible , which began a delay that only cost more money. Once safety protocols were implemented for productions to return to work, these additions also inflated the budget, increasing Dead Reckoning to almost $300 million.

Paramount CEO Brian Robbins has since revealed that the studio and Cruise feuded over the budget on Dead Reckoning Part One and what has now become known as Mission: Impossible 8 , a film that was also delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which has since ended. Robbins has stated that Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie wanted more money to add an expensive scene towards the end of the first film that was originally intended for Part 2 , and Paramount wasn't willing to pay:

"Let's just say that the studio and the production and Tom were in a disagreement over direction, and there was a stalemate going on. We had to hit the pause button. They were stuck on how they were going to move forward with 'Dead Reckoning Part Two' while finishing 'Part One.' It was a production issue, and it was about the scope of what was being asked for. And the question we needed to ask was do we need this and why? And then how big is it going to be, and how is that going to take?"

Budget and collaboration have been a common fight between Cruise and Paramount, particularly during this last run of Mission: Impossible films. According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter , tensions have only increased between the megastar and the studio:

"Tensions have gotten higher between Tom and Paramount as relates to budget and collaboration. He doesn't send script pages, doesn't let them see dailies. He used to be very responsible on budgets. That changed on Dead Reckoning."

Had the box office results been more significant, these tensions could've been erased. However, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One was not the massive box office success that Paramount, or even Cruise, may have expected. The film grossed $566 million globally, which is not a horrible figure but certainly lacking when compared to the film's $300 million budget, not including marketing costs.

For comparison's sake, Rogue Nation grossed $682.7 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, while Fallout was even better at $791.7 million globally on a $178 million budget. The numbers on Dead Reckoning were beneath these figures, but Cruise likely thinks this could've been prevented had Paramount better scheduled the film to appropriately dominate IMAX screens.

Paramount Fumbled the Release of Dead Reckoning on IMAX Screens

Dead Reckoning was already postponed over COVID issues, so it's understandable why the studio didn't want to delay it further. Still, they declined IMAX's request to delay its release a bit more, which limited its run on their large format screens to just nine days. The film opened ahead of Oppenheimer and Barbie , with Oppenheimer having contracted access to IMAX screens due to director Christopher Nolan filming the movie with their cameras.

Oppenheimer had those screens for over three weeks or longer, while Mission: Impossible only had them for nine. Cruise reportedly made many angry calls to rectify this, but his anger was brushed aside. One tactic that was played was moving the film up to a mid-week Wednesday release to have the screens longer, but that wasn't nearly enough, and perhaps hundreds of millions of dollars were left on the table.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 Talks Are Happening, Tom Cruise Could Join Quentin Tarantino’s Final Movie

Warner Bros. is hoping to bring Tom Cruise back for Edge of Tomorrow 2, while the actor is hoping to once again work with auteurs.

All of these rifts left Cruise open to be courted by other studios. The deal with Warner Bros. reportedly came about after a meeting between Cruise and CEO David Zaslav went well as the duo hit it off over their potential plans. Allegedly, Paramount was unaware of these meetings or developments, but they wouldn't need to be since Cruise no longer had an exclusive deal with them. Should they have heard about this union when it hit the trades, Paramount had to be worried about truly losing their golden goose.

Since the deal with Warner Bros. also doesn't have an exclusivity clause, Cruise is free to work with anyone he wants, including more deals with Paramount. However, to most looking in, it appears that Cruise is setting the stage to cut off ties. He still needs to complete Mission: Impossible 8, and he no doubt will make it as epic as it can be, but signs point to it being his last hurrah as Ethan Hunt. Even though he has expressed interest in continuing these films, a lot can change when business relationships falter. Once he concludes his obligations with Paramount, he could properly put Mission: Impossible to rest, which has had an incredible run that many thought wouldn't still be going on when it began in 1996.

Putting an interesting wrinkle in all of this was the announcement that Top Gun 3 is in the works with a script currently being written that includes Cruise and his Maverick co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell. If his relationship with Paramount is so fragile, why would he be involved with them on another Top Gun film?

It should be noted that Paramount nor Cruise have publicly commented on this development, but it does feel like a final hail Mary from the studio to stay in good graces with the actor as he sets up offices on the Burbank lot with Warner Bros. The news also landed almost like a let us put our big news against your big news. It felt very competitive, as if this sort of fight was going on to make Cruise happy. Ultimately, Cruise is the clear winner here because he's free to develop projects with anyone he sees fit.

Even with the Top Gun 3 news surfacing, it's a long road from getting in front of the cameras. A script needs to be finished, and shooting a film of this scope would take time in addition to post-production. He still needs to finish Paramount's own Mission: Impossible film, and he has to get to work on the Doug Liman-directed Universal project that will see the actor shooting in space, which will hopefully feature some of Tom Cruise's best stunts . Cruise's calendar is extremely crowded, and it's unclear when he'll get to work on anything new for Warner Bros., Paramount, or any other studio. For now, it seems like Cruise is setting up the next stage of his career, and that could very well be without Mission: Impossible , Ethan Hunt, or Paramount Pictures.

Tom Cruise isn’t just a powerhouse on the silver screen; he’s also a savvy businessman with an impressive portfolio. While he’s best known for his blockbuster hits, there’s more to Cruise than meets the eye.

What Businesses Does Tom Cruise Own?

From his production company to his stake in various entertainment ventures, Cruise has spread his wings far beyond the realm of acting. Let’s take a peek at the business side of this Hollywood icon and discover what enterprises he’s got his hands in.

Cruise/Wagner Productions

In the heart of Hollywood’s soaring skyscrapers and star-studded Walk of Fame, Cruise/Wagner Productions stands as a testament to Tom Cruise’s entrepreneurial prowess. Founded in 1993, the production company is a partnership between Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner, a former talent agent with an equally keen eye for cinematic hits. This dynamic duo has steered the company to remarkable achievements , producing several box-office successes that have ingratiated Cruise not just as an actor but as an influential producer.

The company’s filmography is impressive, boasting titles that have become synonymous with high-octane action and compelling narratives. Mission: Impossible —a franchise that redefined the spy genre—is perhaps the brightest jewel in their crown, grossing billions globally and cementing Cruise’s status as a producer who can deliver both critical acclaim and commercial success.

While action may be their bread and butter, Cruise/Wagner Productions hasn’t shied away from investing in an array of genres, demonstrating Tom Cruise’s ability to identify and produce films that resonate with a diverse audience. From the haunting psychological drama Vanilla Sky to the historical thriller Valkyrie , the company’s versatility is evident.

Cruise and Wagner have fostered strong connections within the industry, enabling them to attract some of the most celebrated directors and A-list actors to their projects. Their knack for creating collaborative environments has not only resulted in high-quality entertainment but has also nurtured enduring relationships in the ever-evolving landscape of Hollywood.

As Cruise/Wagner Productions continues to establish its presence in the entertainment world, their ability to adapt and innovate remains key. With technology and audience preferences constantly changing, Tom Cruise’s business acumen keeps him ahead of the curve, ensuring that the company doesn’t just react to trends, but often sets them.

United Artists

Tom Cruise’s ambitions in the entertainment industry didn’t halt with the success of Cruise/Wagner Productions. In a move that showcased his deep understanding of the business, Cruise took a significant step by partnering with MGM in 2006 to resurrect the historic film studio United Artists. The legacy of United Artists, founded by cinema giants like Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford, was now in the hands of one of Hollywood’s most driven actors.

Under Tom’s leadership, United Artists aimed to give artists more control and a collaborative space to create unique and compelling content. He took the creative helm, determined to steer the studio back into prominence by producing films that resonate with both critics and audiences. “Lions for Lambs” , featuring heavyweights like Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, was among the first films created under the revitalized banner.

While Cruise’s tenure with United Artists was brief, it left an indelible mark on the studio’s approach to filmmaking and business strategy. Despite stepping down from his executive role within a few years, the period marked by Cruise’s involvement brought forth critical discussions about independence and innovation in Hollywood’s dynamic ecosystem. His foray into the storied studio is yet another testament to his versatility, not just as an actor but as a filmmaker with a keen eye for both art and commerce.

United Artists also provided Tom Cruise with an avenue to further imprint his vision onto the industry, reinforcing the notion that celebrities can deftly navigate the complexities of Hollywood’s corporate side. It wasn’t just about starring in blockbusters but about nurturing a more artist-friendly environment — one where the story and the storytellers are valued components of the cinematic experience.

Tom Cruise Aviation

In his continuing pursuit of personal and professional excellence, Tom Cruise also took to the skies literally. His passion for aviation is well-known among fans and industry insiders alike. Cruise, a licensed pilot, owns a P-51 Mustang , a historic World War II fighter aircraft. Aside from the Mustang, he’s also the proud owner of a Gulfstream IV , a jet known for its luxury and speed.

Cruise’s fascination with aviation isn’t just for play; it’s an extension of his persona . He often pilots himself to film sets and has been known to engage in aerobatic maneuvers, bringing a sense of adventure to his travels. The investment in these aircraft is not only a nod to his love for flying but also speaks to his approach to business: private, efficient, and with a penchant for control.

Tom Cruise’s aviation assets stand as a testament to his commitment to his craft. He doesn’t simply play a pilot on-screen; he embodies the thrill-seeking, barrier-breaking characters that have made him a household name.

  • P-51 Mustang: a showpiece of aviation history and personal nostalgia.
  • Gulfstream IV: reflects luxury, speed, and the heights of business travel.

Aircraft ownership, for Cruise, isn’t merely a means of transport. It’s a statement —about his dedication to the craft, the value of time-saving practices in business, and his personal brand that prizes freedom and a capacity for unique experiences.

Aviation isn’t just a part of Cruise’s life; it’s an integral thread in the fabric of his being , weaving together the domains of his film career, his business ventures, and his personal aspirations. Like his United Artists initiative, Tom Cruise Aviation is yet another example of how he charts his own course, in the air and in the competitive skies of Hollywood.

Church of Scientology

While Tom Cruise’s endeavors in the entertainment and aviation sectors are well-known, his involvement with the Church of Scientology is another facet of his multifaceted life. He’s not just a member of this controversial organization but one of its most prominent advocates. His connection with Scientology has sparked curiosity and debate, but it’s evident that Cruise’s commitment is deep-rooted and personal.

Scientology’s Principles and Beliefs shape its members’ perspectives, and Cruise has often credited the Church for his successes and personal growth. The actor’s investment in the Church is more than just financial; it’s an intertwining of his life’s philosophies with the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard, the Church’s founder.

Rumors have circulated that Cruise holds a significant position within the Church’s hierarchy, although these claims are often speculative. The Church’s tight-knit community values privacy, making it challenging to suss out the specifics of Cruise’s role. Regardless, his dedication to Scientology endures as a key aspect of his public persona.

The star’s association with Scientology extends beyond personal belief into the realm of business. There’s speculation that he has used his A-list status to champion Scientology-affiliated businesses. Influence and Networking within the Church could provide Cruise with unique business opportunities, though details on exact enterprises remain sparse due to the Church’s infamous secrecy.

Despite the Church’s contentious reputation, Cruise’s association with it has seemingly done little to dampen his career. In Hollywood, he’s as much a power player as ever, with the Church of Scientology accompanying him behind the scenes. It’s a testament to Cruise’s Teflon-like star power that his business interests continue to flourish amid the complexities of his spiritual affiliations.

Tom Cruise’s Real Estate Portfolio

Tom Cruise, a man known for his blockbuster smashes, also boasts a real estate portfolio as impressive as his filmography. They’ve often likened his collection of homes to the eclectic characters he’s portrayed—each property with a distinct personality and charm. Cruise’s investments span the map, signifying not just wealth but his penchant for privacy and excellence.

The Hollywood icon’s property holdings are nothing short of breathtaking. From the sprawling hills of Telluride, Colorado to the buzzing heart of New York City, Cruise’s choice in estates mirrors his adventurous spirit. His Telluride home, on the market for $39.5 million , is tucked away on over 298 acres of land, complete with a 10,000-square-foot main house that’s a monument to rustic luxury.

Down in sunny Florida, Cruise’s Clearwater apartment is strategically placed near the spiritual headquarters of the Church of Scientology. It’s reported that the building’s top floor, rumored to be his retreat, promises unobstructed views and a sanctuary from the paparazzi’s prying lenses.

Further west in Beverly Hills, the star’s former estate—a palatial spread once valued at around $30 million—vied for attention with the grandest of the golden state’s mansions. Although Cruise has since let go of this gem, the property bore witness to opulent parties and was a sterling example of extravagance.

While specifics about each property Cruise owns aren’t always public, it’s known that he has a knack for flipping his homes for a profit. Industry professionals speculate that beyond his star power, he possesses a shrewd sense of the real estate market. And with each strategic buy and sell, he cements his role not just as a leading man in films but as a savvy investor in the high-stakes world of real estate.

Tom Cruise’s business ventures are as varied and dynamic as his film career. From the skies to the silver screen and even into the realm of spirituality, he’s built an empire that mirrors his diverse interests and relentless drive. His properties aren’t just homes but investments that reflect his eye for excellence and privacy. Whether he’s in the cockpit of his P-51 Mustang or walking the halls of United Artists, Cruise’s entrepreneurial spirit is unmistakable. His deep ties with the Church of Scientology may stir up controversy, yet they’ve become an integral part of his identity. As Cruise continues to navigate the worlds of entertainment, aviation, and real estate, his ventures serve as a testament to his ambition and the breadth of his influence.

2. Producing

In 1992, Cruise formed a joint production company called Cruise/Wagner Productions with Paula Wagner, his longtime agent. Between when it was founded and when it became dormant in 2008, the firm was behind some of the biggest successes of Cruise’s career, including the first three Mission: Impossible s, Minority Report , The Last Samurai, War of the Worlds , and a handful of titles he didn’t appear in, such as Narc, The Others, Elizabethtown, and The Eye . Films that emerged from C/W racked up nearly $3 billion in ticket grosses.

Months after its formation, Cruise/Wagner Productions signed a deal with Paramount that would run into 2006, reported CNN, when the two split due to a variety of reasons. Within a week, new funding had been secured by Washington Redskins founder Dan Snyder and hedge funds. What Cruise and Wagner earned specifically as owners of the company isn’t clear, though it was estimated that Paramount may have paid $10 million a year on everything from salaries to office space and more, according to Today .

In 2006, Cruise and Wagner moved to United Artists , where they took over the studio, which at the time needed to be “resurrected.” Just two years later, Wagner left the company amid accusations she was not doing a good job, according to Variety . She walked away, but The Los Angeles Times reported that she and Cruise still own a combined 30% of the firm , though what that’s worth, or earns either of them each year, isn’t entirely clear.

3. Real Estate

As one of the richest actors in Hollywood today, it’s not surprising that Cruise owns a portfolio of properties around the world. He has also apparently made millions selling off his homes in large transactions throughout the years. In 2016, Cruise sold his Beverly Hills mansion for $38 million after purchasing it for $30.5 million in 2007, according to Dirt. While it looks like the actor may have earned $7.5 million in the deal, there are also rumors he spent as much as $15 million renovating the home, so what he made in terms of profit isn’t clear. That same year, Cruise sold a house in West Sussex, England for $6.2 million after buying it a decade prior for $3.8 million, per South China Morning Post . He may have earned $2.4 million in that trade.

As of June 2022, Celebrity Net Worth estimates that Tom Cruise is worth $600 million, though that sum could very easily climb in the coming months and years as he makes millions more from Top Gun: Maverick , in addition to other upcoming projects. Forbes last listed him on its ranking of the Celebrity 100 Earnings in 2017, when the magazine reported he took home $43 million in a year.

Warner Bros Gives Tom Cruise Free Reign To Make Anything He Wants And A Corner Office For His Production House On The Warner Lot

Tom Cruise, Top Gun, Warner Bros

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Motion Picture Group co-chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca Pam Abdy, and Tom Cruise have agreed to a new strategic partnership that will begin this year. The $13 billion-grossing actor and producer will create and produce original and franchise theatrical films in which he will star. Cruise’s production company will have an office on the Burbank, California set.

The last time Cruise appeared in a Warner Bros. film was in the 2014 sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow ($370.5 million global gross), one of eight films he made with the studio, which also included Rock of Ages, The Last Samurai, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Interview with the Vampire, Risky Business, and The Outsiders. It’s a victory for Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who took over as co-chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group in 2022 and have been working hard to revitalize the studio, as well as David Zaslav, who hired them.

The agreement with Cruise, who has projects at rival studios such as Universal and Paramount, is neither exclusive nor a traditional first-look deal. The actor can make films for other studios, but it is hoped that he will be able to produce the type of globally appealing blockbusters that will spawn sequels and boost Warner Bros.’s bottom line.

“We are thrilled to be working with Tom, an absolute legend in the film industry,” said De Luca and Abdy in a statement. “Our vision, from day one, has been to rebuild this iconic studio to the heights of its glory days, and, in fact, when we first sat down with [Warner Bros. Discovery chief] David Zaslav to talk about joining the Warner Bros. Discovery team, he said to us, ‘We are on a mission to bring Warner Bros. back – we have the best resources, storytelling IP, and talent in the business – and we need to bring Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros!’ Today, that becomes a reality and we are one step closer to achieving our ambition. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Tom back to Warner Bros. and look forward to bringing more of his genius to life on screen in the years ahead.”

The eighth installment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise for Paramount, as well as an upcoming Universal action film from “Edge of Tomorrow” director Doug Liman, will see Cruise become “the first civilian to do a spacewalk” outside of the International Space Station. He was most recently seen in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” though a box office flop, as well as 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” which was his biggest hit.

Said Cruise: “ I have great respect and admiration for David, Pam, Mike, and the entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery and their commitment to movies, movie fans, and the theatrical experience. I look forward to making great movies together! ”

A third Top Gun movie is reportedly in the works.

As reported by Puck , a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick is said to be in development. According to the report, franchise star Tom Cruise will return to the cast, joined by Maverick co-stars Glen Powell and Miles Teller. Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote the screenplay for Maverick , is also reportedly on board to pen Top Gun 3 . Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is also expected to return to either direct or produce. Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison are also reported to be a part of the project after serving as producers on Maverick with Cruise.

Who Is Top Gun: Maverick’s Penny and Is She in the First Film?

Since Kelly McGillis did not return for the Top Gun sequel, producers turned to an "old flame" for Maverick's love interest, Penny Benjamin.

Tom Cruise: Hollywood's Busiest Actor?

The report that Top Gun 3 is happening comes at an interesting time for Cruise, who is beginning a new partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery to help develop new movies. As the deal is not exclusive, Cruise is still free to make more movies with Paramount and other studios, but the A-list actor's schedule may be filling up very quickly as a result. However, the Puck report suggested that the Top Gun: Maverick sequel may be Cruise's next project after he's wrapped with Mission: Impossible 8 .

It wouldn't be the surprise of the century if the report turns out to be accurate, given the immense success of Top Gun: Maverick . The sequel grossed more than $1.4 billion worldwide when it was released in 2022, and better yet, it was met with very positive reviews from critics and fans alike . It currently sits with an approval rating of 96% at Rotten Tomatoes, and its audience score is even more impressive, sitting at 99% with more than 50,000 fan ratings. The sequel was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, where it also won for Best Sound.

Top Gun: Maverick’s Tom Cruise Cried Reuniting with Val Kilmer

Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise says that returning to work with his co-star Val Kilmer, who plays Maverick's rival Iceman, brought him to tears.

Along with Val Kilmer, Cruise starred in the original Top Gun , which was released in 1986 by director Tony Scott and writers Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. The original film was also a big hit, grossing over $357 million against a $15 million budget. It also won an Oscar for its song "Take My Breath Away," and it was added to the National Film Registry in 2015.

In Top Gun: Maverick , Cruise returned as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell , revisiting the character over three decades after the events of the original film. It follows Maverick as he confronts his past while training Top Gun graduates for a dangerous mission. Kilmer also returned for a very special (albeit emotional) reunion scene with Cruise .

The original Top Gun is streaming on Paramount+ as well as the free streaming platform Pluto TV . Top Gun: Maverick is also currently streaming on Paramount+ and Prime Video.

Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

of Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

After his breakthrough with leading roles in ‘Risky Business’ and ‘ Top Gun ‘ in the 1980s, Thomas “Tom” Cruise Mapother IV started bagging pivotal roles in several dramas, including ‘ Born on the Fourth of July ,’ for which he even won a Golden Globe Award and got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. In the 1990s, he rose to newer heights of stardom by featuring in various commercially successful films, such as ‘ A Few Good Men ,’ ‘ Interview with the Vampire ,’ ‘The Firm,’ and ‘ Jerry Maguire .’

Once he impacted dramas, he started traversing the action and sci-fi genres. By landing some iconic roles in the ‘ Mission: Impossible ‘ film series, ‘ Collateral ,’ ‘ Edge of Tomorrow ,’ and ‘ Top Gun: Maverick ,’ he established himself as an action star, performing most of the risky stunts on his own. The winner of three Golden Globe Awards, four nominations for the Oscars, and an Honorary Palme d’Or, Tom Cruise is known to be one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Given his immense popularity and fandom, most of our readers are looking forward to his future projects. Here is a list of all the upcoming movies and TV shows of Tom Cruise!

1. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (2024)

Tom Cruise recently jumped off a cliff on a motorbike for ‘ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ‘ and he will be in action soon enough in its sequel, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.’ Helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, the spy action movie is the eighth installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series with Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt for the eighth time running.

Although the plot details are kept under wraps, the action-adventure film is most likely to resume Ethan’s hunt for The Entity as he meets some new friends and foes along the way. The production for the sequel began in March 2022 but is yet to be finished due to the delay caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Having gone through several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to its release date, it is now officially set to be released on June 28, 2024. But it is very much possible that it will get postponed again due to the pause in production.

2. Untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project (TBA)

tom cruise production company 2022

Tom Cruise is set to take his status as an action star to the next level by traveling out of Earth to film the first ever Hollywood motion picture in outer space. In May 2020, it was reported that Elon Musk’s Space X and Cruise were working on an action-adventure project with NASA. Not only is Cruise expected to be blasted into space alongside filmmaker Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked in ‘ American Made ‘ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ for the upcoming film, but he will also live up to his reputation by attempting to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station. In this movie, Cruise is set to essay the role of a down-on-his-luck man who is the sole person in the position to save Earth. Apart from starring in the film, he is attached to the project as a writer as well as a producer.

3. Live Die Repeat and Repeat (TBA)

A sequel to the 2014 movie ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’ is an upcoming science fiction film that will reportedly reunite Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, with the former set to reprise his role as Major William Cage. Moreover, Emily Blunt is also rumored to portray Rita again, alongside Cruise. Ever since the release of the hit original film, talks of a sequel have been flying around. However, in 2019, it was finally set in motion when Matthew Robinson was brought on to write the script.

Fast forward to a couple of years later, in a May 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly , Emily Blunt revealed, “That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don’t have the straight answer on that one.” With the project still lingering in the development stage, it is hard to expect it to be brought to life in at least a couple of years.

How Tom Cruise makes and spends his millions

  • Tom Cruise is one of the most successful actors in Hollywood and one of the industry's last major stars.
  • He's made millions on his films and he has spent his cash on a fleet of cars.
  • Here's how Cruise makes and spends his millions.

Cruise was paid $75,000 for his breakout role in 1983's "Risky Business."

tom cruise production company 2022

Playing a teen who has a wild time when his folks are away, Cruise showcased in "Risky Business" the star quality that would give him global fame later in his career.

For his efforts, he was reportedly paid $75,000 . Not bad for a 19-year-old. But his asking price would only grow from there.

In 1986, he was paid $2 million for "Top Gun."

tom cruise production company 2022

Cruise made $2 million to play hotshot Navy pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in "Top Gun" and became a heartthrob in the process.

Cruise took in $100 million for 2005's "War of the Worlds" and it wouldn't be the last time he'd take in that kind of figure.

By the time Cruise teamed with Steven Spielberg on the remake of this classic sci-fi thriller, the actor's going rate was $20 million a movie. But Cruise was one of the first to be shrewd enough to understand that he could make more if he bet on himself.

So for this movie, he skipped on the upfront pay and instead agreed to take a percentage of the movie ticket gross.

The movie took in over $600 million at the worldwide box office . Cruise walked away with a cool $100 million .

Cruise was named Forbes' highest-paid actor of 2012, taking in $75 million.

tom cruise production company 2022

By 2012, Cruise was at a difficult moment in his career; his involvement in Scientology and divorce from Katie Holmes were making headlines more than what he was doing on the big screen.

Despite all of that, Cruise made major coin. According to Forbes, Cruise earned $75 million between May 2011 and May 2012, making him the highest-paid actor of the year. Most of it was earnings from 2011's "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."

He landed at the #4 spot on Forbes' list in 2016 with $53 million in earnings.

tom cruise production company 2022

Though in his 50s, by 2016 Cruise was kicking into another gear and distancing himself from the pack to becoming one of the last huge movie stars.

Forbes put him in fourth place that year on its list of highest-paid actors with $53 million thanks to "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation." But things were only going to get better.

According to a 2020 study, by that time Cruise made $7,000 per word.

tom cruise production company 2022

In 2020, the site Casumo calculated just how much Cruise makes per word by cross-referencing salary data and the scripts of several of Cruise's films.

It found that Cruise averaged $7,000 per every line he delivers. And for how much screen time the star has in his movies, yes, that's a whole lot.

Cruise took in over $100 million for 2022's "Top Gun: Maverick."

tom cruise production company 2022

Thirty-six years after playing Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, Cruise returned to the role and surprised everyone by making the "Top Gun" sequel a global sensation.

In the process, he made a small fortune.

As he did with "War of the Worlds" and several of the "M:I" movies, Cruise opted to take a percentage of the box office gross for "Top Gun: Maverick."

"Maverick" made $1.5 billion worldwide at the box office, Cruise's all-time biggest hit to date. He pocketed over $100 million for his efforts.

Cruise spends (and makes) money through real estate.

tom cruise production company 2022

Cruise has real estate holdings all over the world, though, within the last decade, he's listed or sold many of his properties.

In 2013, he listed two of his properties in New York City: his East Village condo ( $3 million ) and his Greenwich Village townhouse ( $28 million ).

In 2016, he sold his Beverly Hills property for $38 million . Cruise had originally paid $30.5 million for it in 2007.

And in 2021, he sold his 10,000-square-foot Telluride mansion for $39.5 million . It features a gym, library, eat-in kitchen, two fireplaces, and a three-bedroom guest house.

He loves to spend money on expensive cars.

tom cruise production company 2022

Cruise has a garage of fancy cars.

In 2020, GQ highlighted some of his prized wheels: a 1958 Chevrolet Corvette C1, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, and a 2010 Saleen Mustang S281.

He also has a 2005 Bugatti Veyron, which he drove to a "Mission: Impossible III" fan screening in Los Angeles with then-wife Katie Holmes. Unfortunately, he couldn't get the passenger-side door to open.

It has been reported Cruise has given at least $25 million to Scientology over the years.

tom cruise production company 2022

It seems Cruise has been a major financial supporter of the Church of Scientology , the religion he's been involved with for nearly 40 years.

It was reported in 2008 that Cruise had given the church at least $25 million .

Tom Cruise is apparently still interested in “ Edge of Tomorrow 2,” according to director Doug Liman . Speaking to Empire magazine , Liman said that he recently rewatched the 2014 action movie with his leading man, and the two continue to be in touch about the long-planned sequel.

“No, we keep talking about it,” Liman said when asked if “Edge of Tomorrow 2″ is dead. “We love that world.”

Warner Bros. announced in 2019 that it was officially developing an “Edge of Tomorrow 2,” but there’s been no concrete updates since then. Cruise recently signed a dea l with Warner Bros. to develop movies, which has led many fans to wonder if that will include a sequel.

Emily Blunt appeared on Variety’s “Awards Circuit” podcast last December and revealed she also has continued talks with Liman about a sequel.

Hollywood heavy-hitter Tom Cruise with his bucket of popcorn got Londoners ‘riled up’ during his shock appearance at the premiere of Twisters .

The Mission Impossible star surprised everyone in the Leicester Square cinema as he joined his friend Glen Powell to promote the film.

When speaking on the One Show after the premiere, Glen discussed how Tom was a huge presence during the screening but in the most humble way.

‘To experience that with an audience and Tom, I mean he was like getting the audience riled up, he was laughing louder than anyone and cheering, it was great,’ he shared.

The duo previously worked together on Top Gun Maverick and have remained in touch ever since but Glen didn’t expect the star to back his career so enthusiastically.

‘Tom was just so excited for all of us,’ he shared, explaining the core cast had sat in a group with the Top Gun icon right next to him.

A picture of Tom Cruise at the Twisters premiere with Top Gun fellow actor Glen Powell

Glen continued: ‘He’s turning around to Daisy (Edgar-Jones) being like ‘that was great’. It is such a cool quality, he is such a rare individual who just really roots for everybody.

‘But really roots for people that want to entertain audiences, and this movie is really all about that. This is a big summer blockbuster and it delivers in every way.’

Videos quickly went viral of the 62-year-old actor seeming incredibly down-to-earth as he mingled with fans at Twisters’ European premiere.

One clip saw Tom directing photographers to get the perfect shot of himself and Glen, 35, flashing their pearly whites in front of the screen.

Tom, who Glen once described as a ‘kindred spirit’, kept things more casual, opting for a t-shirt and suede bomber jacket paired with jeans.

‘Great night at the movies for the premiere of #twisters not every night you get to watch a movie with #TomCruise,’ wrote Angus Ashworth on X.

User tweetyenergy added: ‘Tom directing the photo so you can see Twisters in the background what a legend.’

Despite appearing at the premiere, the Jerry Maguire actor does not star in Twisters and clearly just dropped by to support his pal.

Fans on X quickly joked that Glen had been ‘anointed’ as the next big star, having broken into the mainstream with lead roles in Anyone But You and Hit Man .

‘Huge for the girlies who never moved on from top gun maverick,’ wrote Leah as film critic Clarisse Loughrey joked: ‘Love to see such a supportive dad.’

Other fans teased that the ‘thirst trap’ posted by Glen hours before, where he held his tiny dog wearing nothing but a towel, hadn’t had quite the impact he expected.

This isn’t the first time Tom has done this though, as last summer he randomly posed with posters for Barbie , Oppenheimer , and Joy Ride.

Of course, the Tom Cruise seal of approval won’t hurt Twisters’ box office, especially when he’s advertising it to his 6.9million X followers.

Since Top Gun in 2022, the cast have shared various behind-the-scenes stories about the Hollywood icon’s support of their careers.

A picture of Glen Powell as Hangman in top Gun Maverick with helicopter behind him

Glen, who plays Lt. Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin in the film, also revealed that stunt-happy Tom once pretended to lose control of a helicopter they were flying in.

‘Tom goes, “Oh no, oh no,” and he starts dropping the helicopter over London,’ he shared.

The Scream Queens actor recalled thinking, ‘Am I about to be the unnamed guy that dies with Tom in a smoking hole in the middle of London?’

‘I got to watch a guy who knew every department. He was able to clearly interface with everyone, be so friendly and respectful, and be able to communicate that vision,’ he added.

A picture of Daisy Edgar-Jones, from left, Anthony Ramos and Glen Powell in a scene from Twisters

The cyclone disaster film – a stand-alone sequel to 1996’s Twister – sees Glen starring as charming storm-chaser Tyler Owens.

Daisy Edgar-Jones plays leading woman Kate Cooper, who is haunted by a ‘devastating’ encounter with a tornado.

Rounding out the cast are Hamilton’s Anthony Ramos, The OA’s Brandon Perea, Loki’s Sasha Lane, and The Politician’s David Corenswet.

Twisters is in cinemas from July 19.
