Tour Opening Act

«Something really crazy started to happen. I was opening up for every single country headliner imaginable. I was opening up for Brad Paisley, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw. Like, all these people that I'd always wanted to open up shows for. I was a nervous wreck. I rehearsed non-stop, over and over again. And I loved it. Those were some of my favorite times.» Taylor Swift

Table of Contents

Rascal flatts: me and my gang tour (2006-2007).

«Rascal Flatts just had the perfect audience for me. I have so many young girls who are into my music and I was really wondering how it would be translated into a more traditional country audience. And it's just been unbelievable. It's really exciting to see that my music can apply to literally all walks of life.» Taylor Swift

Kenny Chesney: The Opening Slot That Wasn't (2006)

«It was for more money than I’d ever seen in my life. I was able to pay my band bonuses. I was able to pay for my tour buses. I was able to fuel my dreams.» Taylor Swift

George Strait's Tour (2007)

«It's crazy to think that a year ago, I was sitting in high school and now I'm on tour with George Strait. Playing for so many people a night, that's such an honor. The stage for his shows is really awesome 'cause there's four sides to it. So I get to work like four crowds every night. It's really, really exciting! When you're singing you can hear the echo of the people in the audience singing every single word with you and that was that big dream that I had for myself. It's happening.» Taylor Swift

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill: Soul2Soul II Tour (2007)

«Taylor proved that she has what it takes to be a real artist in country music and why her fans love her so. It was a thrill to have her on the 'Soul2Soul Tour.' She was professional, prepared, gracious, and most of all, gifted. The real deal.» Faith Hill

Brad Paisley: Bonfires & Amplifiers Tour (2008)

«Brad treats his opening acts like they're just on the same level as he is. I mean, he bought us presents and he'll come and talk to us. It's very cool to be on tour with somebody who's that down to earth. It's really a blessing to be on tour with somebody who just doesn't think that they're all that and who will just come to your bus and be like, 'Hey, how do you do today?'» Taylor Swift

Keith Urban: Escape Together World Tour (2009)

«She was a blast on the road. People have asked me, 'Could you sense that she was going to be who she became?' And I was like, 'I think everybody knew that.' You could see it clearly. She was playing way past where she was. She was way into the future. You could tell.» Keith Urban

Shlisselburg (Oreshek)

The historic fortress of Shlisselburg - also known as Oreshek by Russians and Noteborg by Swedes - occupies an island in Lake Ladoga at the head of the River Neva. This was once a vital strategic location in territory and trade disputes between Sweden and the medieval principality of Novgorod Velikiy.

The island was first fortified in 1323 by Prince Yuri of Moscow, and changed hands several times over the next four centuries, before being definitively captured by Peter the Great at the beginning of the Northern Wars of 1700-21. By the end of the war, Shlisselburg was deep in Russian territory. No longer of strategic significance, the fortress was turned into a prison for those who threatened Tsarist rule. Among the most famous inmates were Peter the Great's half-sister Maria, the boy-Tsar Ivan VI, and members of the Decembrist Uprising and the Narodnaya Volya - "People's Will" - terrorist organization responsible for the assassination of Tsar Alexander II.

While some of the 14 th century fortifications were excavated in the 1960s and can be seen by visitors today, the earliest surviving section of the fortress is really the 16 th -century Tsar's Tower, through which visitors enter the fortress. Several additions were made to the island in its time as a penal colony, including the Secret House of Emperor Paul's reign, which now includes recreated cells to give visitors an idea of inmates' conditions, and the New Prison, which was built in 1884 and held, among others, Lenin's brother, Alexander Ulyanov, who was hanged for treason in 1887.

A plaque to Ulyanov can be found at the spot in the prison yard where he was executed, and the ruins of the prison chapel have been transformed into an unusual memorial to the defense of Shlisselburg against the Nazis, when the fortress held out against continual artillery shelling for nearly 500 days during the Siege of Leningrad.

Unless you plan to join a tour party, the easiest way to travel to Shlisselburg is to take a bus or marshrutka minibus from Ulitsa Dybenko Metro Station. Buses stop about 50m from the jetty where a small ferry service runs to the island fortress.

rascal flatts tour 2007

Friends House Moscow

Supporting quaker work in russia.

rascal flatts tour 2007

2018 is the 200th anniversary of when the marshes around St Petersburg began to be drained by the Quaker Daniel Wheeler. When Tsar Alexander wanted to undertake this project, he contacted the Society of Friends (Quakers) in Britain with a request to send someone to oversee the work. Alexander already had friendly contacts with Quakers and trusted them to find a specialist for this purpose.

After an initial prospecting trip, in 1818 Daniel Wheeler took his wife, family and a group of workers out to St Petersburg.  They settled first in the Okhta region, then at Shushary (now near Pulkovo airport). Wheeler’s work was very successful. He used modern English agricultural methods, drained a large area of marshland, and began to grow crops on it for the St Petersburg market. He also attempted to improve the life of his Russian workforce by building cottages for workers and giving them plots of land.

While in Russia, Daniel’s wife and one daughter died and were buried near the family home in Shushary.  The 200th anniversary has been marked by restoring this Quaker burial ground and consecrating it.

The following news article appeared, in Russian, on 16 March 2018 here  in Gorod Pushkin ( www.gorodpushkin.ru ). You can read more about Quakers in Russia here .

(This is a rough translation from Google Translate – to be replaced)

Yesterday in Shushary they consecrated the place of the restored grave of the family of Daniel Wheeler, an English Quaker, a grain merchant from Sheffield, an ameliorator. In the XIX century, Daniel Wheeler drained over a hundred thousand acres of marshes in the vicinity of St. Petersburg – in Volkovka, on Okhta, in Shushary. For his significant contribution to the amelioration of the St. Petersburg lands, Nicholas I granted a plot of land near Tsarskoye Selo under the Quaker Cemetery.

This year marks 200 years since the beginning of the draining of marshes in St. Petersburg under the guidance of an English meliorator. By this date, the family graves of the Wheelers were restored. The wife and youngest daughter of Daniel Wheeler died in Shushary and are buried there in the cemetery.

The restoration of the grave was financed by the St. Petersburg Charity Fund named after Grachy Poghosyan.

Consecrated place of burial of the Wheelers archpriest of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Shushary father Eugene. At the end of the ceremony, a reception was held in the temple complex of Shushary.

The photo of the graveyard is from the news article in Gorod Pushkin .
