7 Exhilarating Motorcycle Road Trips Around the U.S.

Whether you're seeking fabulous scenery or fun-filled sweepers and twisties, these road trips guarantee the ultimate in two-wheel rides.

photo road trip moto

Cruising around the U.S. on a motorcycle makes for the perfect pandemic outing. After all, motorcycle touring offers the ultimate in social distancing. It's also tremendous fun , turning a road trip into a dopamine-charged adventure as you open the throttle and sweep through the curves. Plus, you'll never feel such a sense of freedom and heightened awareness, nor so close to nature, from inside a car.

All that's required is a great set of wheels, the correct protective road gear, and a bit of planning. To get you started, we've chosen some of America's most magnificent motorcycle road trips — from one-day outings to multi-day adventures — from sea to shining sea. Most routes combine fabulous scenery with some roller-coaster twists, turns, and dips. Others offer journeys through American history, with plenty of smooth hardtop where you can enjoy a lazy pace or even crank open the throttle.

Coast Highway 1, Maine

Connecting Portland with the Canadian border town of Calais, this 260-mile, forest-fringed, two-lane coastal highway unfurls through classic New England countryside. Views of the low-lying coast are infrequent, but the joy of this ride comes from reveling in dozens of short scenic loops off U.S. Route 1. Each one curls around slender peninsulas pinned by historic lighthouses and lined with quaint seaside hamlets. Lobster shacks stud the sandy shores, emanating tantalizing smells of crustaceans, while stops for whale watching and boating adventures are equal temptations. In Acadia National Park, Cadillac Summit Road spirals up to the highest point on the U.S. eastern seaboard, combining thrilling curves and twisties with sensational views from the summit. When city-dwellers escape the urban heat on summer weekends, the coast highway can be bumper to bumper with cars and RVs, so spring and autumn are the best times to visit.

Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina and Virginia

Just the thought of cruising this iconic ride will induce grins of anticipation, although not necessarily for adrenalin junkies. Snaking southwest almost 500 miles along the crest of the Appalachian Mountains (from Afton, VA, to Cherokee, NC), the nearly flawless, narrow two-laner has a 45 mile-per-hour speed limit. So slow down, submit to the leisurely pace, and savor the kaleidoscopic Kodak moments as you soak in awe-inspiring vistas. More than 200 pull-offs and overlooks on the BRP provide plenty of opportunities to safely "ooh" and "ahh." Motorcyclists will also love sweeping bends, although care is needed for the many decreasing radius curves. And be ever-cautious of deer and other wild animals, plus slippery wet leaves in autumn. Connecting the gateways to Great Smoky Mountains National Park (south) and Shenandoah National Park (north), and the Civil War battlefields of Virginia, your ride begs to be extended into a multi-day trip.

Natchez Trace Parkway, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi

A serene and leisurely ride, the 444-mile-long Natchez Trace Parkway is a National Scenic Byway and All-American Road for good reason. Gliding through a cypress swamp, rolling farmland, and a national forest, the "Old Natchez Trace" also saunters through history as it winds from Nashville, TN, to the Mississippi River in Natchez, MS. The sinuous two-laner completed in 2005 (and part of the National Park Service) roughly follows an old travel corridor. Riders follow segments of the original Natchez Trace Indian Trail once used by the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Natchez Native Americans and by American traders until the advent of Mississippi steamboats. Some 90 marked stops tempt you to marvel at gorgeous waterfalls, Civil War sites, and Indigenous archeological sites on an unhurried, bucolic trip through time. Best yet, there are no trucks, nor even a single stop sign its entire length. Set your cruise control at 50 miles per hour (the speed limit) and revel in the Zen experience.

Going to the Sun Road, Montana

Short, sweet, and smooth as silk, this stellar solely-in-summer ride kicks it up a notch, drawing serious adventurers seeking the Holy Grail of mountain roads. One of America's epic alpine routes, the 50-mile two-lane causeway transcends Glacier National Park east-west as it writhes up and over the Continental Divide via the 6,646-foot summit at Logan Pass, then augers down 3,000 feet to Lake McDonald. Along the way, it delivers more twists, turns, and thrills than a James Bond movie. But take it easy; the speed limit is 45 miles per hour at lower elevations and 25 miles per hour higher up. That's just slow enough to let you soak in the jaw-dropping views of glaciers and craggy mountain ranges. Scenic pullouts line the road, which tops out amid windswept alpine tundra. The road is typically fully open from late June through late October, depending on weather conditions. Check the weather (which is highly variable) before setting out. To double your fun, ride the road in both directions.

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah

In a region where virtually any route is a no-brainer, Utah's Scenic Byway 12 outclasses all others for sheer geological overload. Some 130 miles of pure driving bliss, this All-American Road worms through Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument — a 1.9-million-acre desert wonderland of multi-hued pinnacles, arches, and cliffs, book-ended by Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks. The road climbs from 5,223 feet to 9,636 feet between Panguitch (on U.S. 89) and Torrey (at Utah 24), with tight, thrilling twisties and hairpins especially numerous along the vertiginous "Hogsback" section around Boulder. Be sure to take the Bryce Canyon and short Escalante Petrified Forest side trips. Dual-sport riders can even find some unpaved areas for off-road fun, such as Hole-in-the-Rock Road. The road is open year-round, but winter storms can briefly close it until the heavy snow is plowed.

Owens Valley, Mono Lake to Owens Lake, California

California is replete with popular scenic highways, yet few — if any — can compete with the uninterrupted beauty of Highway 395, unspooling dramatically through the flat, straight Owens Valley at the eastern base of the Sierra Nevadas. This is world-class touring for the sheer pleasure of relaxed riding. The rift valley is framed along its entire 130-mile length by snow-capped peaks soaring to 14,000 feet to each side. Fab side trips offer steep, serpentine climbs up to the sparkling lakes and volcanic marvels of Mammoth Lakes, Whitney Portal, and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, which each offer breathtaking vistas. Stitching together a chain of laid-back Old Western towns, U.S. 395 also leads past such fascinating historic sites as the WWII Manzanar War Relocation Center and the 'Movie Flat' area of the Alabama Hills, where hundreds of Western movies were filmed.

Pacific Coast Highway, Morro Bay to Monterey, California

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

California's signature road trip, Pacific Coast Highway — or simply "the 1," or "the PCH" — tops the list of many a motorcyclist's dream rides. Hugging the shore the entire way, this cliff-hanger combines unsurpassed scenery with more curves than Kim Kardashian. PCH snakes all the way from Southern California to the Oregon border, but the 123-mile Big Sur section between Morro Bay and Monterey is considered the ultima thule. You'll salsa past seal-strewn beaches, pounding surf, and giant redwoods soaring above plunging cliffs. Fill up on gas before you start as you quickly leave civilization behind to weave and dance along the remote mountain-backed shoreline. Avoid summer weekends, and check road and weather conditions before setting out: long sections of the PCH are often famously shrouded in fog (especially in summer) or closed due to landslides. Once you reach Monterey, keep going as the fun continues beyond San Francisco to Oregon.

The allure of the open road, the hum of the engine beneath you, and the thrill of discovery around every bend—there’s nothing quite like embarking on a motorcycle road trip. The freedom and exhilaration of long-distance riding are unparalleled. However, a successful road trip requires careful planning and preparation. From pre-ride inspections and route planning to packing essentials and practicing safe riding, there’s much to consider. This comprehensive guide provides essential “motorcycle road trip tips” to ensure your first long-distance ride is not only memorable but also safe and enjoyable.

1. Pre-Ride Motorcycle Inspection and Maintenance

Ensuring your motorcycle is in top-notch condition is the first step in planning a successful road trip. You don’t want mechanical issues spoiling your adventure or, worse, causing safety concerns. Here are some key areas to inspect:

  • Oil and Fluid Levels: These are the lifeblood of your bike. Check your oil, brake fluid, and coolant levels. Top off or change as necessary.
  • Tires: Inspect for adequate tread depth and signs of wear or damage. Check the tire pressure and adjust according to your bike’s specifications and the load you’ll be carrying.
  • Lights, Brakes, and Signals: Test all lights—headlight, taillight, brake light, and turn signals—to ensure they’re working correctly. Check the brake pads for wear and replace them if needed.
  • Chain and Sprockets: Clean, lubricate, and adjust the chain tension as per your bike’s manual. Inspect the sprockets for wear.
  • Batteries: Ensure your battery is fully charged and the terminals are clean. A failing battery can leave you stranded.

2. Route Planning and Break Management

While part of the thrill of a road trip is the sense of freedom and adventure, it’s wise to have a basic plan.

  • Route Selecti0n: Research the roads you’ll be traveling. Use online mapping tools to get a sense of the route. Check for road conditions, weather forecasts, and local attractions you might want to visit.
  • Accommodation: If you’re planning a multi-day trip, consider pre-booking your accommodations. After a long day of riding, knowing where you’re going to rest can be a relief.
  • Rest Stops: Plan to take regular breaks. Riding a motorcycle can be physically demanding. Regular rest stops will help you stay alert and reduce the risk of fatigue-related accidents.

3. Packing Essentials

Packing for a motorcycle trip requires careful thought. Space is limited, and carrying too much can affect your bike’s handling. Here are some essentials to consider:

  • Tools and Spares: Pack a basic tool kit, spare fuses, spare keys, and a tire repair kit. If your bike uses tubes, consider carrying a spare one.
  • Clothing: Pack according to the weather and remember, layers are your friends. Don’t forget your rain gear, even if the forecast is clear.
  • Hydration and Nutrition: Carry a hydration pack or water bottles and remember to stop regularly to refill. Pack high-energy snacks like nuts or energy bars.
  • First Aid Kit: A basic first aid kit can be a lifesaver. Include band-aids, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, painkillers, and any personal medication.

4. Dress Appropriately

Dressing appropriately for a motorcycle road trip is about more than just comfort—it’s about safety. Wearing the right motorcycle gear can protect you from the elements and potential road accidents. Here are some clothing essentials:

  • Helmet: Choose a helmet that fits well and meets safety standards. Full-face helmets provide the best protection.
  • Jacket and Pants: Look for gear that’s made of durable materials like leather or abrasion-resistant textiles. Consider gear with built-in armor for additional protection.
  • Gloves: Your hands are often the first thing to touch down in a crash, so protective gloves are a must.
  • Boots: Durable, over-the-ankle boots can protect your feet and ankles in case of an accident and provide support and comfort during long rides.

5. Stay Hydrated and Energized

Hydration and nutrition are key factors in staying alert and energized on the road. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, reduced reaction time, and impaired judgement. Carry a hydration pack or water bottles, and plan regular water breaks. Pack high-energy, easy-to-eat snacks like trail mix, energy bars, and fruit.

6. Practice Safe Riding

When you’re on the road, safety should always be your number one priority.

  • Ride within your limits: It’s easy to get carried away in the excitement, but it’s important to ride within your skill level.
  • Follow traffic rules: Adhere to speed limits, signal your intentions, and always maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
  • Stay vigilant: Keep an eye out for road hazards like potholes, gravel, or animals. Be aware of the vehicles around you and always have an escape route in mind.

Conclusion

Planning your first motorcycle road trip can seem daunting, but with careful preparation, you’ll be ready to hit the open road with confidence. Remember, the journey is as important as the destination. Take your time, soak in the sights, and enjoy the unique sense of freedom and adventure that only a motorcycle road trip can offer. So gear up, ride safe, and embark on the journey of a lifetime.

Sometimes, people buy motorcycles not to commute around the city or chase their personal lap record at the nearest track. Sometimes, people buy motorcycles with the express intent of quite literally "getting out there," taking road trips that could last as short as a day to spending a couple of months on the road.

For these riders, a special type of motorcycle exists across multiple classes, the "touring" motorcycle that doesn't really have its own class. It is more of a specialization, if you will, attached before or after a class title, such as a sports tourer or a touring cruiser. What each and every one of these bikes do, however, is provide enough reliability, capability, capacity, and efficiency to be able to handle two up riding for days on end.

By their very nature, these special motorcycles need to be comfortable, have some decent torque behind them, and offer quality of life things such as panniers, heated grips and seats, windscreens, and the like. There are a ton of these bikes out there, some more popular than others, so our list likely won't match yours, and that's perfectly fine. These are, in our subjective opinion, 10 of the best touring motorcycles to take on road trips.

About Our Selections

These selections considered ease of use, rideability, price, and how effective each motorcycle was in its designated function, in this case providing multi-day rideability without causing excess rider fatigue. To that end, comfort was rated much higher than on many other lists.

There is no set category for road trip/touring motorcycles, as pointed out above, so everything from a supercharged sport tourer to a touring cruiser is included.

Still the King of Touring Motorcycles, even after nearly 40 years

photo road trip moto

Why We Picked It:

Right off the bat, let's just outright state it: The Gold Wing, in any form, is the ultimate road trip motorcycle. Honda and BMW both quite literally started the modern touring bike class in the mid-1980s, and both haven't really looked back since.

The Honda does edge out ahead, however, by its full suite of features that come as standard, not options like on many BMWs. These include: A walking mode for its DCT transmission that helps you back it out of a parking space; Double wishbone suspension to help the front fork smooth out any and all bumps; Keyless start and automatic shutoff if the key gets too far away; The comfiest saddle for both rider and pillion in the business; Reliability that is second to none; and Honda's extensive customer support network that means if you do break down somewhere, you're always within a couple of hours of an authorized service center.

Another thing that keeps the Gold Wing on top is the constant evolution and development the bike goes through. It was one of the first Honda models with a DCT, it was the first Honda with a built in airbag, it always keeps the connectivity options via USB or Bluetooth to the latest standards... if we listed everything, this entry would take up three pages, so we'll just say that if you plan on any kind of multi-day or long-distance touring, Honda's Gold Wing, in any of its trims, deserves your attention.

Specifications:

Price: $28,600

Engine: 1,833cc boxer six

Power: 124.7 HP

Torque: 125.4 lbs-ft

Transmission: 6 Speed Manual OR 6 Speed DCT Automatic

Curb Weight: 804 lbs

While the Gold Wing Tour is the "touring" model, all Gold Wings are equally the best of the best touring motorcycles

The Gold Wing Tour's special features include electronically adjustable suspension, a reverse gear, double wishbone damper suspension to smooth out any massive bumps, and an optional DCT transmission

Has by far the best touring saddle for a rider of any touring bike, no competition

If you want to go coast to coast and back again, this mighty BMW will get the job done without complaint

photo road trip moto

As mentioned before, it was both Honda and BMW that started the modern touring motorcycle class, that of a big bike, with a big engine, with big comfort and capable of big mileage. BMW's range of K 1600 bikes is their primary distance touring lineup, but among all the excellent options, it's the K 1600 Grand America that's the shining star.

The reason for that is that the Grand America is just the right amount of bike, without falling into the idea of excess. It is supremely comfortable, has enough grunt to reverse the rotation of the earth, and it comes with enough storage space to be able to move a small apartment in one trip.

One of the best features about the 2023 edition of the K 1600 Grand America is its 10.25 inch TFT dash, which can be configured in about as many ways as you can think of. Full screen tachometer and speedometer, split screen information with sat nav, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay controls, on-the-fly adjustments to suspension and ride modes... the list is nearly endless.

If you are serious about a long-distance road trip or three every year, your real options for the best touring motorcycles come down to either Honda or BMW, and to be honest, both do the job exceptionally well.

Price: $28,130

Engine: 1,649cc inline six

Power: 160 HP

Torque: 132.7 lbs-ft

Transmission: 6 Speed Manual

Curb Weight: 809 lbs

A bike that is almost in perfect balance... it has enough kit and features that are required for long distance touring, but does not have excessive amounts of unnecessary stuff

One of the best TFT dash's in the industry

Extremely comfortable with one of the best seats for both rider and pillion

Multiple accessories to make it your own K 1600, including passenger armrests, heated seats, and the like

From the many options from Harley, the Ultra Limited combines all the best features into one bike

photo road trip moto

It's big. It's heavy. It's expensive. But when you buy a Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited, you get one of the best touring cruisers in the world, no ifs, ands, or buts. Built around the massive Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-twin, it is not the most expensive or most feature loaded Harley you can get, but it has just the right things in just the right amounts.

While it may look like your average bagger with an additional top case, it really is what is underneath that makes it so great. On many other bikes, heated grips are options, but standard on the Ultra. Linked Brembo ABS brakes that will use both front and rear brakes if needed on just a foot pedal push or brake lever pull, so you can focus on avoiding what caused you to brake.

It also has all the connectivity you need, including rider/passenger comms relay on top of Bluetooth smartphone linking so you can use voice commands as well. It has a full infotainment system as well, with speakers by Boom! Box GTS.

In fact, the only optional items on the Ultra Limited are cornering ABS, anti-skid control, and vehicle hold control when doing a hill start. Apart from that, everything and a small kitchen sink is included and it's just enough, without going overboard, to make it a supremely capable and comfortable American tourer.

Price: $29,799

Engine: 1,868cc (114 ci) V-twin

Power: ~100 HP

Torque: 119 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 917 lbs

Looks like a normal bagger, but hides all the important stuff under its skin

The very definition of a Harley touring bike, with ample luggage, big low down grunt, a whole slew of rider aids and connectivity, and the only real options are quality of life items

Not the most powerful or most expensive Harley out there, but for the price, it has all the right features at the right price

2023 Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited specs, features, & pics

It pretty much states its intentions with its name...

photo road trip moto

The Indian Roadmaster is perhaps the single best American tourer out there. Yes, we said it, and yes, Harley enthusiasts, we will explain why.

Built around the massive Thunderstroke 116 V-twin, the Roadmaster includes all the features you need, and a kitchen sink as well. That sink comes in the form of heated grips, seats, and floorboards as standard, with separate seat controls for rider and pillion, keyless ingnition, Indian's new and excellent RIDE Command infotainment/connectivity system, a full 7 inch touchscreen for navigation, infotainment, and the like, and did we mention it also has 36 gallons of storage space?

Add to that an electronically adjustable windshield to tailor just how much air you get in your face (or not), air adjustable rear suspension, and a 2 year/unlimited miles warranty. As well, it has rear cylinder deactivation once you're up to speed on a highway or interstate, so it can also go exceptionally far on its masssive 5.5 US gallon tank.

It may not be quite as powerful as a Harley, but only by a few percentage points, which it makes up for in standard equipment that many others have as options. It is, quite literally, a master of the road, a long-distance American tourer that does exactly what it says on the label.

Price: $31,499

Engine: 1,890cc (116ci) V-twin

Power: 73 HP

Torque: 126 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 877 lbs

One of the most complete packages for long-distance touring out there

Huge 5.5 US gallon tank for all day riding without needing to stop to fill up every few hours

Very high-tech, including rear-cylinder deactivation once at cruising speed to boost mileage

Every rider aid and comfort accessory you could ever want

2023 Indian Roadmaster specs, features, & pics

Not all road trips actually occur completely on roads. Sometimes, you need a Swiss Army Knife-Bike, and that's the V-Strom

photo road trip moto

The reason that the Suzuki V-Strom 650XT Adventure gets a place on this list instead of the newer V-Strom 800DE is because of its engine. The 645cc V-twin has achieved near-mythical status for its reliability, low down torque, and rev-happy nature, all things you want when going on a road trip.

The reason that the 650XT Adventure is the model to buy is that it takes almost all of the options you can add to the lower spec trims of the model, puts them in as standard, and then knocks a couple of thousand off the resulting price. As well, despite the V-Strom qualifying as a full ADV bike, it is by its very nature more at home on the road than off it.

This isn't to say it's a slouch off-road, far from it. The V-Strom is a highly respected machine that has conquered deserts, mountains, very steep hills, and flat grasslands, all without a paved surface in sight. However, when you're going on a road trip, you want an ADV that is great on the road , and that is where the V-Strom shines.

It also helps that the 2023 and onward V-Strom's have gained Suzuki's Advanced Traction Control System as standard, and has one of the best ABS systems in the business in case you need to toss out the anchor in a hurry. All of this, all of these standard features, rider aids, and capabilities, for less than $11,000? Bargain of the century, if you ask us

Price: $10,799

Engine: 645cc V-twin

Power: 70 HP

Torque: 46 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 470 lbs

While it is a fully capable ADV bike, it is far more at home on the road, hence why we picked it for road trips

The top spec 650XT Adventure model has pretty much every bell and whistle you would want, including two aluminum pannier lockers

Now carries the newest version of Suzuki's Advanced Traction Control System, with three distinct traction programs (rain/dry/dirt)

Has one of the best linked dual-zone ABS systems out there, easily on par with the best from the likes of Honda and BMW

A bike many people forget Yamaha makes, that is one of the best in the business for medium distance touring

photo road trip moto

The simple fact of the matter is that many people, when they think Yamaha, think of supersports, a supertwin, a couple of superbikes, some of the best dedicated dirt and trail bikes, and some pretty capable dual-sports. What they often forget is that Yamaha has one of the single best sport touring motorcycles out there, the Tracer 9 GT.

After a long period of continuous production, the Tracer 9 GT took a small sabbatical for the first half of 2023, and has come back from its journey as an upgraded bike that was released at the start of the summer of 2023, the Tracer 9 GT+. Now sporting electronically controlled, semi-adjustable front and rear suspension, a completely reworked electronics suite, the third generation of Yamaha's very slick quickshifter, the latest edition of the YCC-T throttle-by-wire, and is the first Yamaha to carry radar/lidar controlled adaptive cruise control.

Other standard equipment includes the 10-position adjustable windscreen, heated grips, adjustable ergonomics at the hands and feet, and of most interest to us is the absolutely newest rider aids including anti-wheelie, traction control, radar-linked dual-zone ABS, and a MotoGP-derived Slide Control System (SCS) that doesn't allow the rear tire to step out at all, in any weather or road condition.

To use a metaphor, it's as if Yamaha sent the original Tracer 9 GT to university expecting a bachelor's degree, and it came back with a Ph.D. in Grand Touring. It is quite simply the new benchmark for sport tourers, and it has set a mighty high bar to reach.

Price: $16,499

Engine: 890cc triple

One of the best sport tourers, although many seem to forget that it's made!

Shares its engine with the MT-09 hyper naked

The latest and greatest rider aids come standard, such as slide control, anti-wheelie, dual zone ABS, and a whole slew of things behind the scenes to keep the rubber side down

Is the first Yamaha ever to carry radar/lidar adaptive cruise control

Electronically controlled, semi-adjustable KYB suspension front and back

"Wait, not the Multistrada V4 S?" we hear the Ducatista asking immediately. Yes, the V2 S is a better option for moderate to long distance touring, with one huge reason and a bunch of smaller ones.

To tackle that huge reason first: It's price. You get all the electronic features, standard features, and optional accessories that you get with the V4 S, with the only difference being the V-twin instead of the V4 engine, for damned near $10,000 less than the V4 S. That is before any accessories or options, and that is a massive chunk of change that can then be turned around and spent on those very same accessories to kit your V2 S out with.

To tackle the smaller reasons, the first is that with the V2 S already at 113 HP and 71 lbs-ft of torque, it can already handle practically any situation you might encounter on your road trip. Being realistic, do you really need 170 HP when the fastest you might end up going is 70 MPH (at least if you're not riding like a moron)? Do you really need a race-derived powerplant when you don't need to launch from your starting box on the grid at a track? The answer to both of those is a very easy no.

The Multistrada V2 S even shares the same geometry as the V4 S, just reduced by about 5% because of the smaller engine. It will still conquer everything from a cobblestone road in Rome to the twisty, switchback roads draped across the Italian Alps. It really is a jack of all trades and master of many, and we can't believe these words are coming from us, but it's also at a very reasonable price for a Ducati!

Price: $19,295

Engine: 937cc V-twin

Power: 113 HP

Torque: 71 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 445 lbs

All of the features, electronics, rider aids, and standard features of the V4 S, but at almost $10k less expensive

One of the most capable adventure tourers on the market, as its name literally means "many roads."

Multiple riding modes and some rider adjustable settings such as the SkyHook suspension system

A jack of all trades and master of many, the only area it does suffer slightly is if it needs to go completely off road, as it will handle packed dirt and gravel roads just fine as well

A brand new bike that absolutely deserves your attention if sport touring is your preferred style

The Suzuki GSX-S1000 GT is one of those bikes that sounds like a wacky, if interesting, idea on paper, but many would simply scoff at. Superbike levels of power and performance, using a superbike frame, but change the geometry to make it a sport tourer? Puh-lease.

Yet, here we are, with Suzuki's newest bike a massive sledgehammer blow in the sport touring market. The whole thing is simply packed with features, with everything from the rider aid control system known as SIRS (Suzuki Intelligent Ride System) that handles all the rider aid settings at the press of a button, to the foot pegs and handlebars being on vibration damping mounts that prevent any buzz from the engine wearing your legs and arms out.

Since Suzuki realizes that not all your road trips are sunny and bright all the time, they've even researched and developed an entirely new type of fabric for the saddle that is water-repellent and extra-grippy when wet, but still allows you to slide your butt side to side for cornering! There is a GSX-S1000 GT+ option, which is mostly the same as the base bike, except with the inclusion of two hard-case saddlebags and some special paint colors.

So, what looked wacky on paper actually works amazingly well in the real world. 150 HP and 79.6 lbs-ft of torque from the 999cc inline four lifted and modified from the GSX-R1000, motivating a sport touring motorcycle that will simply devour the world? From puh-lease to yes, please!

Price: $13,349

Engine: 999cc inline four

Power: 150 HP

Torque: 79.6 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 498 lbs

The engine and basic frame of the GSX-R1000 superbike, transformed into a very capable and comfortable sport tourer

Has almost every rider aid that Suzuki has included

Very neat seat fabric that provides high grip in wet conditions, yet still allows for side to side sliding for cornering

Has vibration damping mounts for the handlebars and foot pegs, to help reduce rider fatigue

A great bike for newer riders that want to have a bagger cruiser for touring, but also want to learn all about riding

photo road trip moto

This one, we admit, is a bit of an odd pick, but we picked it for a reason. That reason is that almost every bike we've listed so far is a powerful, capable touring motorcycle, but none of them are overly beginner friendly. Yes, there are many options that exist out there of new-rider-friendly machinery, but would you really want to put a new rider on a Gold Wing and wish them good luck?

That would be like a first time skydiver with no training being tossed out the door and having to figure out where the ripcord is as they plummet out of the sky. Seeing that there was a void in the touring area for beginner riders, Honda took their already excellent Rebel 1100 and turned it into a bagger, with a touring fairing up front, and equipped it with the DCT transmission to make it a comfortable, easy tourer.

It still has all the charm and guile of the Rebel series, hallmarks including being very lightweight, having just enough power to sustain a comfortable cruise, a parallel twin that has an uneven firing order to get the rider use to the feel of what a V-twin would do, and did we mention it's one of the least expensive bikes on this list at just $11,299?

There are also no worries about reliability, as the 1100T's engine is the same that is fitted to the rough-and-tumble, ultra-reliable Africa Twin ADV bike, so you can go on a long road trip comfortably and with peace of mind that you have one hell of a bike under you.

Price: $11,299

Engine: 1,084cc parallel twin

Power: 86 HP

Torque: 72 lbs-ft

Transmission: 6 Speed Automatic DCT

Curb Weight: 487 lbs

Much like the rest of the Rebel series of bikes, gives newer riders a chance to experience what a cruiser, in this case a touring bagger, can do while also being friendly and forgiving

Comes only with the DCT

Has a full touring fairing and windshield, as well as a relatively low seat height of 27.5 inches

Not overly complicated with too many rider aids, as it is designed to teach new riders about how a bike handles, while giving veteran riders a fun and capable bike

2023 Honda Rebel 1100T DCT specs, features, & pics

2023 Honda Rebel 1100T DCT

Quite possibly the world's fastest sport tourer, but has a proven track record of crushing thousands of miles at a time without issue

photo road trip moto

All this time on this list, we've been conservative about just how much power you really need to go touring, and for this pick, we have simply thrown that conservatism out the window. Near as makes no difference 200 HP, provided by a 998cc supercharged inline four, that makes this pretty much the fastest accelerating and highest top speed sport tourer on the planet.

Yet, being Kawasaki, you can bet your house on the fact that it comes crammed with every single last rider aid that they have in their repertoire. You have stability control, dual-zone ABS, traction control, anti-wheelie, up/down quickshifter, heated grips, cruise control... the list of features is nearly endless.

You can add on hard-case saddlebags, or get them included with the SX SE+ variant, but even the base bike is more than capable of long distance touring without much effort. The way that the H2 SX SE cruises at 70 MPH is pretty ridiculous, as it simply sips gas as it destroys the miles, and if you need power, just twist the wrist, that supercharger spins up, and suddenly you're at the horizon.

Kawasaki's sport tourers are also renowned for being super comfortable, and the H2 SX SE is no different. Easily rideable for a full day as you cross state lines, it is a completely bonkers motorcycle, but that is, quite honestly, why we love it so much!

Price: $28,000

Engine: 998cc supercharged inline four

Power: 197 HP

Torque: 101 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 590 lbs

The only motorcycle series (the H2's) to come from the factory with forced induction

Immensely comfortable despite being a sport tourer

Optional saddlebags can be purchased as an accessory (US) or on the SX SE+ trim (Canada)

Pretty much every rider aid and comfort item that Kawasaki has comes as standard, as this is the flagship sport tourer for the company

The 12 Best Beginner Motorcycles For Long Road Trips

I t's easy to romanticize the idea of setting off on a long road trip, especially when it concerns doing it on two wheels . It's a chance to revel in the freedom the open roads give you, explore, and, quite importantly, get to know the vehicle enabling this experience. Given that, though, it's critical to get the right kind of machine along for this trip.

UPDATE: 2024/01/26 16:17 EST BY RAUNAK AJINKYA

Road trips, in general, can be tough if you don't have the right motorcycle along for the ride, especially if you are a novice rider. Given that, we have updated this list to include a few more entries of motorcycles perfectly suited for the job.

This is especially true if you're a rider devoid of a lot of seat time. The last thing you want to do is bring someone's sportbike along because while it may have a lot of power and consume miles rapidly, it's something you'll tire of rather quickly because of the compromised riding triangle. Luckily, this list should help you get through that selection process. It features beginner-friendly motorcycles you can legitimately rely on for long road trips by the likes of Suzuki , Harley-Davidson , Yamaha , and even Ducati, among others.

How we got our model selections: To compile this list, HotCars made a list of all the appropriate motorcycles on offer that enable long trips. While power was considered a criterion to narrow the list down, the motorcycles also needed to be beginner-friendly, meaning priority was given to motorcycles with comfortable ergonomics, impressive fuel tank capacity, and easy-to-handle curb weight figures. It should be noted that this list is a mix of motorcycles currently in production and those that have been discontinued but can be readily found in the used market. Also, the motorcycles have been organized in increasing order of the current market values.

Top 10 Beginner Motorcycles Under 500cc

Suzuki boulevard s40, used price range: $2,000-$6,000.

Suzuki's cheapest Boulevard doesn't leave you wanting for much. The 652cc engine is strong but not too strong for the bike's weight. It's not quite as long as other cruisers, which is nice for a beginner, and it's got a fairly affordable used price range, too. The seating is relaxed, with handles a little closer to you.

The newer ones come in a cool street-color gray and a classic blue. The way it features less chrome with a blacked-out engine and black finish on the wheels makes it look sporty and simple. A single speedometer over the gas tank is analog, and it has plates on the sides for saddlebags if you need cargo space.

(Specs sourced from Motorcycle Specs )

Harley-Davidson Iron 883

Used price range: $2,000-$10,000.

This Harley-Davidson gets 833 America-made ccs of power and goes for well under $10k in the used market. It's one of the best Harleys to start with, and you won't get kicked out of a biker bar for owning one. The Iron 883 has a V-Twin engine. If you don't know, this is a cool thing to have if you wear a leather jacket with patches unironically.

Admittedly, you don't get quite as much for your investment as an Indian Scout Sixty, and both will always be less reliable than a Honda or Kawasaki, but there are some things that just don't compare, like the trademark Harley rumble! Plus, with motorcycles, there's always less to fix than with cars so that you can do a lot of the work yourself.

2008 Harley-Davidson Iron 883 Specs

Yamaha v star 250, starting msrp: $4,699.

The Yamaha V-Star 250 is one of the very best for uneasy beginners looking to road trip . A new one costs just $4,699, and it gets 78 MPG. That means 195 miles between stops, which is pretty decent for a motorcycle. If you haven't figured it out, most of the time, the numbers by the name represent the ccs in a bike, so this has 249 (thus, 250). That means it's a very comfortable beginner's bike that won't scare you but can still get up to cruising speed faster than most cars. It also means the bike is lighter and easier to control.

It has a decent rear seat for passengers and a good base for saddlebags and packs. The speedometer is analog, and the styling is classic, so you might get confused if you park by any V-Star from the past 40 years. Despite the timeless look, the bike holds up to aging well and won't feel rough or uncomfortable on a long trip.

These Are The Best Cheap Beginner Motorcycles From Japan

Ducati scrambler sixty2, used price range: $5,000-$7,000.

The Scrambler Sixty2 is a 399cc sportbike marketed more towards women. It weighs less than any on this list at just 403 lbs, which is great for people worried about laying it down on accident. It may look like a "naked" (a sportbike with no fairings or extra body covers), but this bike gets just shy of 250 miles of range, and even though the seat is a little more aggressive and won't hug your buns, the way it's shaped actually is relaxing and won't rub your behind the wrong way like a dirt bike (for men and women).

This bike won't be able to hold saddlebags, but the Sixty2 makes a great road trip bike for someone who won't spend more than three days riding in a row and wants a good in-town motorcycle the rest of the time. Surprisingly, for its size (but not for Ducati's standards), it can go up to 100 mph, so you'll never be left wanting more power on the freeway.

2018 Ducati Scrambler Sixty2 Specs

Bmw g 310 gs, starting msrp: $5,890.

The BMW G 310 GS is an adventure bike , meaning with some knobby tires, it makes a decent dirt bike for trails as well. With an adventure bike, you get way more travel (7.5 inches) for smoother rides, a more comfortable seat than a dirt bike, and a more upright seating position than dirt or bullet bikes. The 310 GS is one of the cheapest Beamers you can buy new for just $5,890. That being said, it is a Beamer. This won't win any awards for reliability.

The 310 GS makes a comfortable 313cc that won't get you up any hill climbs but will easily take you up to 90 miles per hour. With 71 MPG, it has a range of 213 miles. The digital display shows gas, gear, and speed in bold fashion, and the LED light makes for a great off-road light in bright mode.

2024 BMW G 310 GS Specs

Honda rebel 500, starting msrp: $6,499.

The Rebel 500 is an affordable and comfortable bike that will last you your whole life. It has 471ccs, which won't let you do any wheelies but does get you up to cruising speed sooner than you need. To keep yourself from locking up your brakes (a significant factor in motorcycle crashes), you can and should get the ABS option. The blacked-out bike may mimic a Harley, but the low seat height makes it ideal for women and the height-challenged. It is also surprisingly fitting for full-height people.

The Rebel has been around for years, so used ones aren't hard to find, and a new one will run for just $6,499. The digital cluster is simple and includes a fuel gauge (not included on all motorcycles). Honda’s slip/assist clutch makes shifting easy for the uninitiated, but sadly, this doesn't come with an automatic transmission. The manual is very forgiving, easy to learn, and worth it, in our opinion. This bike is ideal for beginners who don't plan on switching bikes for years to come.

2024 Honda Rebel 500 Specs

These are the best beginner motorcycles money can buy, kawasaki vulcan s, starting msrp: $7,349.

According to their official website, Kawasaki advertises the Vulcan as being able to fit a wide range of people. The 649cc engine has a good kick at low to mid-range for city stops, but it can also get up to 100 mph. For $7,349, it will feel sportier and quicker than other bikes, but it's also reportedly fun to sit on on the freeway! It has one of the most natural seating positions of any bike under $10,000, probably because it's adjustable.

It may look nothing like a beginner's bike, but it is what Kawasaki offers as their entry-level cruiser . If you're not worried about the bike weighing a little more, it is a very forgiving and comfortable ride. ABS is available, features like a windshield and back support are easy to add, and they are a massive plus on long rides.

2024 Kawasaki Vulcan S Specs

Honda nc750x, starting msrp: $9,499.

If there were a contender for the bike on this list that you could buy with your eyes closed, the Honda NC750X would be right up there at the top of that list.

It's easy on the eyes, great for beginners in terms of the riding ergonomics, is affordable enough, has a great ride, and the DCT on it is the cherry on the icing. It even includes riding modes, a windshield, and a low seat height. That the NC750X often gets discounted is a puzzle.

2024 Honda NC750X Specs

Triumph tiger 660, starting msrp: $9,695.

The star of the show here is, of course, Triumph's lovely 3-cylinder engine, but the Tiger 660 is no one-trick pony. This is about as close to ideal for beginners to get on and go on a long trip .

Tack on luggage and load it up, and the excellent tractability of the motor will still pull you along comfortably. You can even add optional extras that will make the journey more comfortable, like additional lighting and heated grips. Hard to fault the Tiger 660, really.

2023 Triumph Tiger 660 Specs

10 best beginner motorcycles money can buy, bmw f 750 gs.

BMW's GS motorcycle lineup is legendary . The F 750 GS is a natural at completing longer journeys in absolute comfort. One of the most important factors is, of course, the seat, and the F 750 GS makes do with one that's ideally suited to road trips.

At 32.1 inches, it's much lower than you'd expect for a bike this size, but if that's not enough, BMW will also sell you a suspension lowering kit and soft seat, bringing the seat height down further to 30.3 inches. In addition to that, it also gets dynamic traction control, ride modes, and adjustable brake and clutch levers, among others. For the money, it's quite a deal.

2023 BMW F 750 GS Specs

Indian scout sixty, starting msrp: $11,749.

The Indian Scout Sixty is one "beginner" bike that will earn you a lot of respect . It starts at $11,749 and is pretty long and wide but isn't necessarily heavy. The wider handlebars give you better in-city control around corners, and ABS is an option. The engine is 1000ccs, the most of any on this list, but not something an average-fit person couldn't handle easily.

While this is more of a luxury option, it allows for things like a windshield (don't discount how useful one of these is after just two hours of 60+ mph wind in your face) and genuine leather saddlebags. The seat is wide, which benefits the narrow-waisted as well as larger people.

2024 Indian Scout Sixty Specs

Energica eva esseesse9+, starting msrp: $16,110.

This electric bike warrants some cautionary tales: First, do not listen to music until you are comfortable with traffic flow and riding defensively! Cars cannot hear you at all, and they can't see you too well either. Also, its range is 143 miles combined, which is not the best for long trips but is still passable with some planning.

With that out of the way, you get an 80% charge in 40 minutes with a fast charge! All you need to do is stop for a meal by a power station, and you're as well off as any ICE bike. The EsseEsse9 has a nice, upright position , but you're also working with a lot of torque, so make sure you take it slow, or you can pop a wheelie. Otherwise, unlike combustion bikes, it's small and simple and won't have any mechanical issues to stump you. The gauge is simple and can tell the range so you won't be left without power.

How to rent a motorcycle for a road trip

If you’re looking to rent a bike for a two-wheeled adventure, here’s what to know and where to start

By Roadtrippers

There are many reasons to rent a motorcycle for a road trip, whether you already own a bike or not. Perhaps you’re flying into a location far from home, or a destination difficult to access via road. You might own a motorcycle that isn’t the perfect fit for the kind of riding you plan on doing during your trip, or you simply don’t want to go through the hassle and expense of servicing and otherwise getting your own bike ready for a long adventure.

I’ve rented motorcycles in far-flung destinations, and I’ve rented them in my hometown for a day just to try something new. The reasons to rent a motorcycle are endless—and so are your rental options.

What to look for in a motorcycle rental

Renting a motorcycle isn’t always as simple as renting a car. While most car rental companies feature similar makes and models, not every motorcycle rental company features every kind of motorcycle. The first step when looking for a rental bike is to figure out what kind of trip you’ll be taking.

“The first question I would want to know is, what’s the purpose of the ride?” says Austin Rothbard, founder and CEO of peer-to-peer motorcycle rental company Twisted Road . He suggests looking at the type of riding you’ll be doing and narrowing down your options based on motorcycle type.

Two motorcycles parked next to a sign that reads "Biscayne National Park"

Will you be traveling with a passenger? Look for something with a passenger seat and footpegs. Are you planning a long-distance road trip? Look for an extra comfortable motorcycle with a larger-sized gas tank. Do you plan on camping or carrying a lot of gear? Look for a bike with saddlebags or other storage possibilities.

Related 6 tips for going motorcycle camping like a pro

“You can always contact the owner and ask them if it has [a certain feature], because sometimes it doesn’t show up in the pictures,” Rothbard says.

If you have a specific make or model in mind, your chances of finding it may be greater at dealerships with rental departments or peer-to-peer platforms than at traditional rental companies.

Motorcycle rental options

Just like when it comes to renting a car, RV, or vacation home, your options for renting a motorcycle will range from large chain rental companies to mom-and-pop outfitters to peer-to-peer platforms. Some will just rent you the vehicle, while others offer all-inclusive packages and guided tours.

Below are some of the most popular options on the market.

EagleRider is one of the most well-known motorcycle rental companies, with more than 150 locations in 30 countries. While you’re most likely to find various Harley-Davidson models—in fact, many EagleRider locations are located within H-D dealerships—about 70 locations feature other makes as well, from adventure bikes to electric motorcycles. Just like when you’re renting a car, you have the option of one-way rentals for an additional fee.

In 2021, the company also launched EagleShare , its own peer-to-peer platform, which allows individuals to rent out their motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and more.

Twisted Road

Launched in 2017, Twisted Road is one of the most popular peer-to-peer motorcycle rental companies in the U.S. Similar to Turo for cars or RVshare for RVs, you’re renting someone’s personal vehicle. This often means lower prices and more options to choose from, depending on your location and preferences. You can search by features like price, style, brand, and year to narrow down your results. The company also recently launched a 20-point inspection checklist for owners in an effort to increase rider safety.

Related 6 things I learned from renting an RV for the first time

Riders Share

Another popular peer-to-peer option, Riders Share offers privately owned motorcycles for rent across the country. With more than 15,000 registered owners in 2,000 locations, it offers a larger selection of models than you’ll find at a traditional rental company. If you’re unable to pick up and drop off in the same location, Riders Share also offers one-way rentals for an additional fee (expect to pay $800 to $1,000 more than for a one-way trip).

Local dealerships

If you’re looking for a specific brand or model, check to see if your local motorcycle dealership offers rentals. Some harder-to-find manufacturers—like Indian Motorcycle—will have their own rental desks within dealerships.

Guided tours

Craving an adventure in a more remote or rugged place, but not sure where to start? It may be worth looking into a guided tour. Companies like MotoQuest offer motorcycle rentals as well as on- and off-road tours in Alaska, Baja California, and beyond. Many tour companies will also rent you a motorcycle and let you design your own itinerary, if that’s your preference.

Related The ultimate guide to riding Route 66 on a motorcycle

Close-up from below of an orange motorcycle with a sign behind it reading "Rapid City Regional Airport"

Special events

Some people may be looking to rent a motorcycle for a big event, such as the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally . Keep in mind that rentals around popular times in busy areas may be more expensive and require you to book farther in advance. But it could also mean that you have more options.

As an example, Rapid City, South Dakota, launched motorcycle rentals straight from its regional airport in 2022, in partnership with EagleRider, as a convenient option for Sturgis attendees flying in. The goal is to extend the partnership throughout the summer riding season for next year.

What you need to rent a motorcycle

Exact requirements for renting a motorcycle vary depending on the rental company or platform. At a minimum, you need to be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement. You’ll also need a credit card.

Most motorcycle rentals include unlimited mileage. Some may offer gear rentals at an additional cost, but that’s not always the case so do your research in advance if you need to rent gear. In general, wearing a helmet on a rental bike is mandatory, even in states that don’t require helmets by law.

A black motorcycle parked in front of an Old West-style retro town

When it comes to insurance for motorcycle rentals, you’re going to see options similar to when renting a car. Depending on the level of coverage you’re comfortable with, you’re typically able to purchase basic or premium insurance plans along with your booking. It’s also worth calling your own vehicle insurance company to find out if your policy covers motorcycle rentals. In that case, you may be able to waive the additional rental insurance fee—but prepare to put down a hefty deposit (in the case of EagleRider, the deposit is $5,000).

Make sure you read through your rental agreement carefully so you know what’s allowed and what’s not. When riding a rented motorcycle, you’re most likely not allowed to go off-roading, cross country borders, or do stunts (like wheelies and burnouts), just to name a few examples.

It’s time to take a cosmic road trip using light as the highway and visit four stunning destinations across space. The vehicles for this space get-away are NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and James Webb Space Telescope.

In each of the images, which add Chandra data to previously released Webb images, the colors represent different wavelengths of X-ray, optical, or infrared light.

Composite image of Rho Ophiuchi

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center manages the Chandra program. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's Chandra X-ray Center controls science from Cambridge Massachusetts and flight operations from Burlington, Massachusetts.

This release features four distinct composite images from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the James Webb Space Telescope, presented in a two-by-two grid.

At our lower right is Rho Ophiuchi, a cloud complex filled with gas, and dotted with stars. The murky green and gold cloud resembles a ghostly head in profile, swooping down from the upper left, trailing tendrils of hair. Cutting across the bottom edge and lower righthand corner of the image is a long, narrow, brick red cloud which resembles the ember of a stick pulled from a fire. Several large white stars dot the image. Many are surrounded by glowing neon purple rings, and gleam with diffraction spikes.

At our upper right of the grid is a peek into the heart of the Orion Nebula, which blankets the entire image. Here, the young star nursery resembles a dense, stringy, dusty rose cloud, peppered with thousands of glowing golden, white, and blue stars. Layers of cloud around the edges of the image, and a concentration of bright stars at its distant core, help convey the depth of the nebula.

In the lower left of the two-by-two grid is a hazy image of a spiral galaxy known as NGC 3627. Here, the galaxy appears pitched at an oblique angle, tilted from our upper left down to our lower right. Much of its face is angled toward us, making its spiral arms, composed of red and purple dots, easily identifiable. Several bright white dots ringed with neon purple speckle the galaxy. At the galaxy’s core, where the spiral arms converge, a large white and purple glow identified by Chandra provides evidence of a supermassive black hole.

At the upper left of the grid is an image of the distant galaxy cluster known as MACS J0416. Here, the blackness of space is packed with glowing dots and tiny shapes, in whites, purples, oranges, golds, and reds, each a distinct galaxy. Upon close inspection (and with a great deal of zooming in!) the spiraling arms of some of the seemingly tiny galaxies are revealed in this highly detailed image. Gently arched across the middle of the frame is a soft band of purple; a reservoir of superheated gas detected by Chandra.

The 2024 Honda Passport Trailsport is off-road lite

Discussed in this article.

Honda heard your comments on the 2022 Passport TrailSport and gave its off-road, trimmed adventurer a decent shot of steroids for 2024. The result? A more capable version of an already great vehicle.

We reviewed the 2022 Passport TrailSport about a year and a half ago and walked away pretty impressed, even if the TrailSport designation felt more style over substance. It was a simple, low-drama offering from Honda, with tons of space and an abundance of everyday livability.

Its proportions have always just looked right , and it feels more light on its feet than its big brother, the Pilot. Thankfully it’s only gotten better, and Honda has remedied most of our complaints from our time with the original model. If you don’t need a third row, and like the prospect of a little adventure in your lifestyle, the Passport TrailSport is a sensible and enjoyable option that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Upgraded suspension and tires

The 2022 Passport TrailSport we tested rode on Firestone Destination tires and honestly, until that test, we had forgotten that Firestone was still around. They performed decently well but were certainly a curious choice for a two-row SUV marketed for dusting up trails and fire roads. The new General Grabber tires perform much better, and they don’t seem much louder than standard all-season tires found on most two-row SUVs such as the Passport.

Honda also revised the Passport TrailSport’s suspension. The dampers have been retuned and are now softer, and the rear anti-roll bar is now solid instead of hollow. The result is a very comfortable ride on- and off-road, with a certain cushiness we especially appreciated on our road trip to Moab. Even if you never take the Passport TrailSport off-road, you’ll love driving it daily.

A spacious, comfortable and supremely practical interior

As is the case in all modern Hondas, the cabin is extremely comfortable, livable and practical. The front seats are wide and softly cushioned. The revised center console is a huge improvement and offers tons of storage — and it’s perfect for resting your arm on. The same goes for the door pockets. There are more pockets and cubbies in the Passport’s doors than in any other vehicle we’ve tested. The rear seat is likewise very comfortable with tons of legroom; it’s spacious enough for three adults to be comfortable for short drives.

08 2024 Honda Passport TrailSport-min (1)

A small complaint: The gear selector buttons take up an unnecessary amount of space on the center console. There could easily be another storage cubby if they were relocated to the dashboard or somewhere else.

Shop Honda Passport TrailSport listings on KSL Cars

Being essentially a shortened, two-row version of the Pilot means there is a lot of cargo space in the rear. If you have a small family, you’ll have plenty of room for all your gear for a weekend adventure — or at least some very large Costco runs.

Efficient motor, excellent road manners

After driving a string of electric vehicles, hybrids and turbocharged 4-cylinders, it was refreshing getting into something with a good ol’ naturally aspirated V6. The Passport retains its familiar 3.5-liter single-cam VTEC V6 engine, and it delivers good power — especially in its higher RPMs — with its 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque.

33

Power is distributed to all four wheels through a traditional 9-speed automatic transmission, which, like the engine, was refreshing in its simplicity. While lacking in lower RPM punch, push the accelerator deep and you’re rewarded with exhilarating VTEC cam-profile crossover sounds, which adds a little excitement to the Passport’s otherwise docile demeanor. As a daily driver, the Passport TrailSport excels in comfort and livability.

It’s also pretty efficient. We drove the Passport TrailSport in some combined highway and city driving for about 200 miles and averaged just over 20 mpg. We also took it on a 500-mile road trip and averaged a surprisingly frugal 28 mpg — not bad from a naturally aspirated single overhead cam V6.

Odyssey in the blood

As much as we enjoyed the Passport TrailSport, there is something about it we need to mention — the Odyssey of it all. Don’t get us wrong, Honda has done an excellent job at making the Passport TrailSport feel like its own thing. But there’s no denying its occasional and inherent minivan-esque mannerisms, especially with its outward front view and dash layout.

We want to stress, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Minivans provide a comfortable and super user-friendly approach to their transportation. But if you’re truly wanting something a little more rugged looking and feeling, and ultimately more off-road capable, you may want to look elsewhere. That said, the Passport TrailSport is an excellent option for 90% of buyers. It does most things you want off-road and is exceptional on-road.

22 2023 Honda Passport TrailSport-min (1)

Final thoughts

The 2024 Honda Passport TrailSport kicks off at $45,875, which seems reasonable for what you’re getting. Cosplay comments aside, the TrailSport's genuine off-road enhancements instill confidence for exploring beyond the parking lot, all without sacrificing the everyday driving experience. Between the ruggedized looks and pleasing off-road bits, it’s the Passport we’d buy.

  • Light off-roading prowess
  • Exceptional everyday comfort, livability and practicality
  • Durable, efficient V6
  • Loads of space for passengers and cargo
  • A better daily driver than most off-road-oriented vehicles on the market
  • Could be too soft for some
  • Very docile demeanor
  • Upward-tilted, minivan-like dashboard layout

30

Is the Passport TrailSport fun to drive?

We wouldn’t go so far as to call the TrailSport exciting, but it is very enjoyable. It’s easy to drive, non-threatening and gives off a dependable, predictable vibe that we found comforting for daily driving.

Is it good for families?

Definitely. If you have two kids, or maybe even three, this is a great choice for family hauling and weekend adventures. There’s plenty of cargo space in the rear for your family’s gear, and there are more cubbies and storage compartments than you could ever need. Honda has always prided itself on interior space and storage, and the Passport TrailSport continues that tradition.
