Somerset County leaders to meet, discuss potential for ATV trail

SOMERSET, Pa. – The Somerset County commissioners are set to gather feedback from elected municipal leaders about the idea of a county-wide ATV trail.

The commissioners are scheduled to meet with officials from municipalities across the county at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Berlin Borough office.

The commissioners have said they want to gauge support for designating local roads for ATVs and side-by-side vehicles between Somerset County’s borders with Maryland and Cambria County.

During the commissioners’ regular meeting Tuesday in Somerset, President Commissioner Brian Fochtman said Wednesday’s meeting in Berlin would not include public participation. He said taxpayers who wish to attend would not be turned away, but there will be no public comment period.

“We’ve invited representatives from townships and boroughs to talk with them about what we want to build, get their input, and see if they want to be involved and how much they want to be involved,” Fochtman said. “We want to approach this with as much information as we can gather.”

The commissioners would like to replicate a pilot project similar to the Northcentral Regional ATV Trail. That trail has resulted in thousands of all-terrain vehicle users traversing Potter and Tioga counties, creating an estimated $11.7 million impact in 2023 alone.

During the commissioners’ meeting Tuesday, Somerset County resident Diann Troutman urged them to consider the drawbacks of such a trail. She said that after the pilot project in north-central Pennsylvania was completed, people were surveyed in that region.

“They complained about dust and noise pollution and costs of trail maintenance and dust suppression falling on townships and municipalities,” she said.

She also noted potential safety concerns with ATVs parked along municipal roads and ATV operators making their own trails that encroach on private properties.

Others spoke to support the commissioners’ exploration of an ATV trail.

George Critchfield, a Somerset County sawmill owner, said it would bring an economic gain to the county.

“Everyone in Somerset County wants the county to prosper,” he said. “The ATV trail, I’m sure, is not going to be put in place in the next year or even in the next four years. It’s going to take a lot of development, time and thought. (The commissioners) are going to do the best thing for Somerset County.”

He pointed to West Virginia’s Hatfield-McCoy trail as an example of how a similar trail in Somerset County could bring tourism dollars.

“I understand West Virginia is a little more remote than Somerset County, but there is opportunity for Somerset to grow and prosper,” he said.
