The downtown area of Naples, a great Miami day trip.

The first of the Florida Keys as you travel down south, Key Largo is only 1 hour and 45 minutes away from Miami! Part of the joy of visiting Key Largo is there is zero pressure to do anything at all. Biscayne Bay

If you’re looking for an exciting Miami day trip, then why not head over to a national park in Florida? One of our favorites, and only an hour and 14 minutes away from the city, is Biscayne National Park!

The park is an expansive 172,971 acres and 95 percent is water. This national park is home to Elliott Key, which is the largest island in the park.

There are fun activities for everyone at this national park. From guided eco-adventures, fishing and lobstering, boating, paddling, snorkeling, camping, observing wildlife, to relaxing and admiring the view, everyone will enjoy the time spent at this National Park in Florida.

There is no daily entrance fee for this national park , however if you plan to camp overnight on either Elliott Key or Boca Chita Key, there is a fee of $25.

Coral Castle

For those that want a little mystery out of their day trips from Miami, consider visiting Coral Castle. One of the most beautiful castles in Florida , its origins to this day are still a mystery! And at only an hour and 13 minutes away, you’ll easily be musing its mysteries on your drive home!

We know that from 1923-1951, Edward Leedskalnin carved 1,000 tons of coral rock. We know that he designed an elaborate rock garden. What we don’t know is how he did it by himself. Leedskalnin said ““knew the secrets used to build the pyramids.” Some have said he had supernatural powers.

What we do know is that Coral Castle remains an everlasting monument to his lover that canceled their wedding the day before the ceremony. The beauty endures in its exquisite rock formations, shaded by bougainvillea trees.

Among the garden’s features is a 9-ton gate that opens with the touch of a finger, a Polaris telescope, and functional rocking chairs. All of them made completely of coral stone.

When you walk through the castle, you’ll be in awe of the structure. While scientists debate how Leedskalnin built this castle, it stands as a testament to the power of love. The next time you’re in the city, Coral Castle is a must of all day trips from Miami.

Miami Day Trips 2+ Hours Away

The bahamas.

Taking a ferry to the Bahamas is one of the best Miami day trips and one of the best escapes from Florida! It’s definitely easier than you might think! With the ferry launching from Fort Lauderdale and the ferry ride lasting about two hours, you can get to paradise in just over 3 hours total!

The Balearia sails from Fort Lauderdale into the Bahamas port of your choice, either Freeport or Bimini! The cheapest ferry tickets cost $198 for a round trip. If you decide to extend your day trip from Miami into a weekend getaway , you have the option of extending your trip by booking a hotel through the Balearia.

Dock in Freeport, the main city on Grand Bahama, and you can enjoy the oceanfront Lucaya district, with beaches, resorts, and shopping! Check out Deadman’s Reef for the most beautiful snorkeling. Head up the coast to Lucayan National park to explore extensive underwater caves, not to mention great kayaking and nature trails.

Bimini, the closer of the two docks, is only 50 miles away from Florida’s coast. Bimini is also the less-touristy of the two docks, especially when compared to a place like Nassau. You can expect glorious beaches, incredible game fishing, luxurious food and accommodations!

The beaches and mountains of the Bahamas, one of the best Miami day trips.

Bahia Honda State Park

While driving to the keys one of the most popular day trips from Miami, a lot of people overlook the natural beauty of Bahia Honda State Park on Bahia Honda Key! Only 3 hours away from the city, Bahia Honda provides the most relaxing beach escape for weary travelers.

Visitors to the park experience breathtaking views of what makes Florida the Sunshine State. Palm-lined shores are lapped up by gin-clear waters. Balmy breezes will keep you warm year-round in this South Florida State Park.

Explore the world just underneath the waters of Bahia Honda on a self-guided  snorkeling  tour. Among the seagrass beds and rocky bottoms, you’ll catch a glimpse of spiny lobster, starfish, and queen conch poking their heads out to say hello.

Perhaps the most beautiful thing to do at Bahia Honda is star gaze. Once the sun sets on the turquoise waters, stars fill the night sky and the beaches become a magical wonderland. Walk the  Old Bahia Honda Bridge  and  gaze up at the constellations , or just lie back in a beach chair and let the majesty wash over you.

Dry Tortugas

If you’re looking for a true adventure out of your Miami day trips, consider heading out to the Dry Tortugas. One of the most beautiful national parks in America, we will warn you, this trek is not for the faint of heart as the journey will take you a bit of time to get there.

First, start by driving to Key West. From there, you’ll board the Yankee Freedom III, which will take you 70 miles west to Dry Tortugas National Park and Fort Jefferson. The drive plus the ferry will take you in total about 4 and half hours to get there. You can also charter a seaplane for a faster journey, but this option is more expensive.

The beaches on Dry Tortugas National Park don’t come anymore whiter or beautiful. The white sand slopes into crustal clear waters creating a perfect tropical paradise. Some areas are no swim zones and some reserved for snorkelers.

Take a tour of Fort Jefferson to learn about the island chain’s sordid history as a prison, out in the middle of the ocean. At its height, it housed nearly 2000 people and was described as “a dark, mean place.” You can also take a self-guided tour if this doesn’t seem amenable to you.

Camping is also available on Dry Tortugas if you want to spend more than one day here. Keep in mind, this is extremely primitive camping. There is no fresh water on the island, so you will have to bring your own or get some from the ferry. But the good news is no fresh water means no mosquitos!

One of the most overlooked of the Florida Keys is Marathon Key. When planning some upcoming day trips from Miami, consider exploring Marathon Key, only 2 hours and 42 minutes away from the city!

An aquarium and conservation center, Marathon Marine Park is perfect for the entire family! In addition to multiple aquatic exhibits, you can also explore four different touch tanks: Tide Pool, Nursery, Stingray Cove, and Giant Isopod! The more adventurous can take encounters with sting rays and even big sharks!

Then go snorkeling at Pigeon Key, a small island directly under the 7-Mile Bridge which takes you over the keys. The boat launches from Marathon Key, and once your arrive, you’re free to hit the water. We recommend trying the area just off the dock, near the beach, and around the opening of Pigeon Key’s saltwater pool. Be careful, the currents around the island might be swift.

You can also get up and close to sea turtles ! The Turtle Hospital helps to rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured sea turtles. And you can support the cause while also getting up close to these endangered sea creatures by booking a tour. But be sure to book a tour in advance, because they fill up very quickly!

The beaches and palm trees of Marathon Key, one of the prettiest of the Florida Keys.

Key West is known for its nightlife, food scene , beaches , and relaxing island vibes. Don’t be fooled, though. Key West offers a lot of history to learn and adventures for exploring. 3 hours and 47 minutes way, Key West makes the one of the best day trips from Miami.

While we certainly recommend a number of things to do on your drive from Miami to Key West , the southernmost of the Florida Keys has so much to offer on its own! Explore the bar scene on Duval Street to unwind after your long drive. You can also take in the sounds of live music and street performers!

History buffs will appreciate Harry Truman’s Little White House while shopping lovers will appreciate the storefronts and beautiful sunsets at Mallory Square. Adventure lovers? Take a dive down to Vandenburg, a sunken ship eight miles off the coast for underwater sights.

To get yourself into that island living, you can visit one of three Rum distilleries on Key West. Whether you enjoy learning about the distillation process or just enjoy drinking Rum, then head to either Key West’s First Legal Rum Distillery, Papa’s Pilar, and Key West Distilling. You can even pick up some new drink recipes while you’re there.

Everglades National Park, FL

The best day trips from Miami for a little escape from the big city

From laidback beach vibes to rural nature adventures and authentic food, these day trips from Miami offer a shortcut to fun.

Jesse Scott

As much as we love our bumpin’, booty-shaking hometown, sometimes we need a reprieve from Miami. But, one of the perks of living here is you don’t have to hop on a multi-hour flight to experience a new city or landscape. We’ve got a variety of relaxing, unique and adventurous day trips at our fingertips.

Sure, Florida can seem like a long stretch of flat terrain. (Fun fact: It’s the flattest state in the country, contrary to what you may think about Kansas.) But there’s actually plenty of diversity if you know where to look. Plus, we have the Bahamas within 50 miles of our shoreline, y’all.

Your options for the best day trips from Miami include an Everglades escapade, kicking back in the Florida Keys and exploring the Main Streets of South Florida’s emerging downtown neighborhoods. If you’re feeling inspired to extend your stay beyond a day, we’ve pinpointed some stellar lodging options for you, too.

Best day trips from Miami

1.  islamorada, fl.

Islamorada, FL

Lots of people assume Miami and the Florida Keys need to be dealt with as separate vacations, but that’s simply not so. From Miami, it’s an utterly pleasant drive down the Overseas Highway. That name makes sense once you’re on it—stretched over sparkling blue water, the 113-mile throughway connects the narrow, broken-up strip of the Keys back to the mainland.

Islamorada, a small, idyllic beach community traditionally known as a sportfishing capital, is the perfect gateway to exploring what is arguably Florida’s most iconic coastal terrain. The drive from Miami takes less than two hours—though with such brilliant scenery, you’ll want to leave extra time for stopping and taking pictures along the way.

EAT:  All-day dining spot Green Turtle Inn , which originally opened in 1947, is alone worth the trip down to sunny Islamorada: standouts like Barney’s Fish Sandwich and the Ultimate Patty Melt earned it a spot on the popular TV show Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives.

Take a break from lazing on the beach and pull up a barstool at Florida Keys Brewing Co. , a colorful taproom that occasionally hosts fun events like group painting nights.

DO:  The third Thursday of the month is possibly the best time to visit Islamorada, as that’s when Art Walk —a monthly showcase of local artists, sculptors, jewelry makers and musicians—takes over this quarter-mile stretch of the Old Highway.

STAY:  If you’re looking to treat yourself to an overnight stay inside a handsomely furnished suite with a generous balcony and deep soaking tub (not to mention three on-site restaurants and two open-air tiki bars), Cheeca Lodge & Spa  is the place.

If you do just one thing...  Even in you’re just passing through on your way to more southern Keys, there’s perhaps no more iconic detour than stop at Robbie's of Islamorada to feed the massive tarpon off the dock.

2.  West Palm Beach, FL

West Palm Beach, FL

West Palm Beach has long lived in the shadows of its glitzy neighbor to the east, Palm Beach, where the wealthy mosey about in their six-figure-priced cars, ducking in and out of million-dollar mansions. It’s a beautiful place to visit (more on our preferred way to sightsee in Palm Beach below), but for a lowkey getaway that’s also brimming with charm, we’re drawn to the area west of the Intracoastal Waterway.

Plus, it’s a quick jaunt from Miami: just 60 miles north of downtown, you can hop on the Brightline ( MiamiCentral Station ) and be in WPB in just over one hour all while enjoying the view, free snacks (if you upgrade to Select) and a traffic-free ride.

EAT: The Regional Kitchen & Public House , helmed by Top Chef finalist and multiple James Beard Award nominee Lindsay Autry, is a spectacular contemporary American restaurant with roots deep in the Southern cooking tradition. Countryside favorites like pimento cheese, grits and fried chicken are finessed for modern palates and done up to fine-dining standards.

DRINK: Restoration Hardware is a breathtaking, multistory design center and furniture store that also happens to house the RH Rooftop Restaurant , where sunset cocktails are a must. The restaurant doesn’t serve liquor, but it makes up for it with an extensive wine and beer selection. Request a sofa closest to the window and wind down with a cheese board and a crisp rosé. Whatever you do, don’t spill!

DO: The Norton Museum of Art is one of the most impressive cultural institutions in South Florida, where the permanent collection comprises more than 8,200 works across European, American, Chinese, contemporary and photographic art. There’s also an auditorium, a well-stocked shop, a restaurant and an expanded gallery that hosts traveling exhibitions.

STAY: The Hilton West Palm Beach is connected to the Palm Beach Convention Center , but it’s not at all the stodgy business hotel you might be familiar with. It’s thoroughly modern with a large, inviting pool, and its location near The Square and the Brightline station is truly impossible to beat.

If you do just one thing...  At the center of it all is CityPlace , a community-focused, mixed-use complex in downtown where you’ll find retail, restaurants, family-friendly programming, public art and so much more. Curated with sustainability in mind, the space boasts outposts of Miami’s sophisticated plant-based favorite Planta and South Florida health-conscious café Pura Vida (do order the choco chip cookie), among other well-known eateries. It’s a great place to hang out when the weather’s right, be it catching an outdoor movie on the lawn, shopping the weekly farmers’ market or just strolling around.

3.  Homestead, FL

Homestead, FL

Shame on any traveler who makes it this far south and doesn’t carve out at least a little time to wander through Everglades National Park , the largest natural subtropical park in the country. Spanning 1.5 million acres, it’s not the easiest national park to tackle, but the wildlife alone—think Florida panthers, alligators and bald eagles—makes this a fascinating side trip for anyone with a penchant for getting lost in the deep, jungle-y wilderness for a few hours.

The laid-back town of Homestead, which is an easy 45-minute drive from Miami, acts as a portal to the Everglades. And while Homestead offers several affordable hotel options, hardcore naturalists will want to make use of the park’s 48 designated backcountry campsites.

EAT: In case you didn’t get your fill of Cuban food back in Miami, the family-style restaurant Mario’s is a top pick for its generous portions of churrasco steak, Cubano sandwiches and, of course, empanadas.

DRINK: With a reputation for fermenting unconventional fruits—think mangos and avocados—into wine, lush estate Schnebly Redland's Winery & Brewery welcomes visitors to take tours of the property, followed by a tasting at the bar.

DO: Just outside Homestead, near the entrance to Everglades National Park, visitors can sign up for a rollicking airboat tour at Alligator Farm , where you’ll skim the surface of waters that alligators and turtles call home.

STAY: You probably won't be staying the night, but in case you do, keep things simple at Best Western Gateway to the Keys , a breezy budget inn with an outdoor pool and free breakfast.

If you do just one thing... Drive out to the world-famous Homestead-Miami Speedway , which sits just outside the town, and hosts the annual NASCAR Championship. Not in a rush to get back? The event, which draws thousands of racing fans, allows camping and RV parking during the high-speed event.

4.  Key Largo, FL

Key Largo, FL

After what seems like an eternity driving through cramped Overseas Highway or, worse yet, Card Sound Road, entering Key Largo is like crossing over into a giant metropolis. But don’t get ahead of yourself. The first of several Florida keys is large compared to its neighbors, but it’s still quaint with plenty of small-town charm.

EAT: In business since 1982, the Fish House is a trusted source for fresh and local seafood, house-made chowders and its famous Key lime pie. The dessert is so famous that people driving past the restaurant often stop in to order whole pies to-go.

DRINK: Key Largo is famous for its laidback tiki bars. Most people pull up to the waterfront bars on boats, but they’re also accessible via dry land. Gilbert’s is one of the area’s largest and most popular, with a divey atmosphere that fits right in with Largo’s casual vibe.

DO: Pretend you’re on the set of Flipper. At Dolphins Plus , you’ll get to swim with the adorable mammals, pet them while sitting on a floating dock, give ’em a peck and even go behind-the-scenes with trainers to see how they’re cared for.

STAY:  Playa Largo Resort & Spa , an expansive property that’s both luxurious and relaxed, fits the bill if you're planning to indulge in a long afternoon of frozen daiquiris and need a chic place to crash. Spend time lounging on one of the hammocks, take a dip in the lagoon-style pool and pencil in an afternoon of watching the sunset.

If you do just one thing… John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park encompasses approximately 70 miles of open water where visitors can go swimming, snorkeling, boating, diving—basically any aquatic activity you can think of. It wouldn’t be a trip to the Keys without some kind of excursion.

5.  Bimini, Bahamas

Bimini, Bahamas

There are a few ways to get to Bimini, the closest Bahamian island to the USA (and a favorite of none other than Ernest Hemingway), but the most traditional is via ferry. Run by Balearia Caribbean , the two-hour trip runs daily except Tuesdays and Thursdays and leaves from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

After traveling 51 nautical miles from the mainland, the ferry drops you right at the beach in Alice Town, Bimini, so there’s little need for excessive planning or itinerary-making. The ferry comes equipped with a small cafe and bar, though if you can, hold your appetite until reaching the island, which is plied with delightfully laid-back seafood stands and beachside grills.

EAT:  Equipped with an open kitchen and with windows facing out to sea, there’s no better or more classic south Florida dining experience than digging into a lobster and conch salad at the bar at  Stuart Conch Salad Stand .

DRINK:  After-hours spot  Island House , with a hand-painted sign outside and dollar bills staples all over the bar, is the quintessential beachside dive bar.

DO:  In the mood for an authentic experience? Sign up for a two-hour tour with Cleveland "Max" Rolle Jr. of  Bimini Island Tours , who gives an insider's glimpse into island life complete with excursions to shipwrecks, the Dolphin House Museum, the local straw market, a tasting of Charlie's famous Bimini Bread and more.

STAY:  The main landing spot for anyone looking to spend the night, the 750-acre luxury resort  Hilton at Resorts World Bimini  comes equipped with scenic water views, nearly a dozen restaurants and a casino.

If you do just one thing...  Make use of Hilton’s sprawling oceanfront real estate by renting a golf cart and driving out to a secluded spot along the glistening white sand beach.

6.  Delray Beach, FL

Delray Beach, FL

While the quaint downtowns of Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Coconut Grove and Coral Gables get a lot of love for their charming walkability, Delray Beach is an up-and-coming seaside pocket worth adding to your day trip bucket list. Located about an hour north of Miami, its main artery is Atlantic Avenue, dotted with local boutiques and restaurants and culminating in picturesque white-sand dunes. Unlike some other beach towns on this list, Delray has managed to hold on to its quirky and affordable Old Florida charm.

EAT: Capturing that smaller town vibe, Farmhouse Kitchen serves up house-made deviled eggs, velvety mac and cheese, shrimp and grits and other comfort food staples. Snag a seat out on the sidewalk for a leisurely meal as the locals walk their pups down Atlantic Avenue.

DRINK: SaltWater Brewery is as friendly as it gets, tucked on the west side of I-95. Open daily, it has a tasting room with over a dozen craft brews on tap at a given time. Expect to find food trucks and events like trivia, bingo and live jams on any given day.

DO: Find a little Zen at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens . A haven for Japanese culture and arts, there are two museum buildings, quiet paths, pine forests and an expansive bonsai collection to explore. Peep the schedule for classes and workshops where you can learn how to perform a Japanese tea ceremony, arrange flowers and more.

STAY: The Colony Hotel is located downtown and is a stately icon that dates to 1926. A perk of staying at The Colony is access to its Cabaña Beach. The Cabaña Beach is a private space on the sand with a heated saltwater pool, bath houses and free wi-fi. It’s a vibe.

If you only do one thing… Strolling Atlantic Avenue is the quintessential experience here. Aside from chatting it up with friendly locals, pop your head in boutiques like Bolufé , grab a funky flavored latte (kettle corn and cotton candy have shown up on the menu) at The Seed or book a tennis session at the world-class Delray Beach Tennis Center , home of the Delray Beach Open.

The 13 Best Day Trips From Miami

miami day trips

FilippoBacci/Getty Images

Miami is by far the most happening city in South Florida. From the picturesque beaches to the restaurants, bars, clubs, shopping, and architecture, you can always find something to do in this world-class locale. But, why limit yourself? When spending time down in Miami , there are plenty of other fun day trips just an hour or less distance from the city. Explore the beaches of the Florida Keys, or watch a rocket launch into space — South Florida is filled with exciting adventures.

The Florida Keys: Snorkel in Key Largo

Take a ride down to the Florida Keys and enjoy a day of water fun. The truth is, water sports can be done at pretty much any beach Florida, but the Keys are in a league of their own. From the laid-back island vibe to the world-class coral reefs, it’s definitely worth a day trip. The closest Key from Miami is Key Largo, where you can catch a scuba or snorkeling day trip out to  John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park .

Getting There:  Key Largo is about an hour and twenty-minute drive from Miami. It’s a straight drive across the Overseas Highway — truly a sight to be seen. There is also a shuttle service that leaves from the Miami International Airport throughout the day. Plan ahead and make a reservation to ensure you have a spot.

Travel Tip:  Beware of traffic heading down to the Keys. If you’re planning your day trip over a weekend or a holiday, be sure to leave early in the morning, otherwise the hour and twenty-minute trip will probably take you double that. Another important thing to remember is that there are no rest stops on the Overseas Highway until you hit the Keys, so make sure you don’t need a bathroom and you’ve packed plenty of car snacks.

Bimini: Go Diving With a Hammerheads

Ken Kiefer 2/Getty Images

Just 50 miles from Miami is the small Bahamian island of Bimini . It’s not the most popular island in the Bahamas, but this small paradise has a lot to offer. On your day trip to  Bimini  you’ll feel like an explorer uncovering unchartered territory. From snorkeling around shipwrecks off the coast, to diving with hammerheads, to hiking through the island’s  visitors’ trail , you’re bound to discover something new to you. Of course, you can’t leave Bimini without eating like a local — don't miss the conch ceviche, a signature snack on the island, or the lobster pizza at Edith’s.

Getting There:  The best way to get to Bimini is by boat. It’s about a two-hour boat ride. Day trips usually depart around 9 a.m. and leave Bimini about 8 p.m. that night. A round trip ticket is about $120 and usually you can get day passes to The Hilton Resort on the beach as well.

Travel Tip:  Bimini is actually a series of three small islands — North Bimini, South Bimini, and East Bimini. The largest is North Bimini, which is also home to Alice Town and the main drag (the King's Highway) filled with bars, restaurants, and shops. Be sure to head there on your day trip.

Everglades National Park: Bike Through Shark Valley

Tim Kiusalaas/Getty Images

Bike riding is a common Florida activity. Bike riding through an alligator infested pathway? Not as common. But, at Shark Valley, the 15-mile scenic loop around Everglades National Park , you can do exactly that. About halfway through the paved loop you’ll hit a concrete lookout tower where visitors can climb to the top and take in an amazing view of the Everglades . Bathrooms and water fountains are located inside the tower. Remember, you will see a lot of alligators along this path. Even if they seem calm stay at least 15 feet away, they’re still live gators!

Getting There:  Shark Valley is about an hour drive outside of Miami. There are two entrances: U.S. 41 Tamiami Trail in Miami or the Gulf Coast entrance on Oyster Bar Lane in Everglades City. For exact directions, visit the  Shark Valley visitor’s page .

Travel Tip:  The bike loop path at Shark Valley takes about 2-3 hours, so make sure you’re prepared ahead of time with snacks and water. For those who may not be up for the extended bike ride, there is a guided tram that leaves from the visitor’s center.

Space Coast: Watch a Rocket Launch

Pgiam/ Getty

Head up to the Space Coast for a day of sun, surf, and space! Besides Cocoa Beach, a haven for surfers, head to the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville. This is the location of rocket launches into space, which is definitely a sight to be seen. Check the  Kennedy Space Center  site to find out when the next launch will be so you can plan your visit accordingly. But, even if you don’t visit on a day that a rocket is being launched, touring the space center is fun for all ages. Explore mission control, go inside a real space capsule, and learn about famous NASA pioneers.

Getting There:  Cape Canaveral is about a 3-hour drive from Miami. But, even if you don’t have a car, it’s still doable in a day. There are tours that offer round trip rides starting at about $150 per person. Reservations are required.

Travel Tip:  If you’re goal is to watch a rocket launch, make sure you check that viewing is available. Due to certain launch times and schedule constraints, NASA does not always allow visitors to watch in the seating areas.

Palm Beach: Kayak to Peanut Island

John Foran / EyeEm/ Getty

Although Palm Beach is filled with classy shopping, award-winning restaurants, and million-dollar homes, there is more to do there than just gawk at the lifestyles of the rich and famous. For a fun day activity, rent kayaks at the Riviera Beach marina and head out to Peanut Island. It’s about a 20-minute kayak ride. Once you’ve reached the island there’s snorkeling, nature trails, and a relaxing beach. Bring all the supplies and food you’ll need because there’s not much on the island other than bathrooms. While there make sure to visit the once top-secret Kennedy Bunker. It’s a true historical relic.

Getting There:  Just head north up I-95 for about an hour and you’re there. A  Greyhound  bus is available as well as the  Tri-Rail .

Travel Tip:  Head back to Miami on A1A and you’ll pass all the beautiful and opulent mansions that line the water.

Fort Lauderdale: Hang Out on Las Olas Boulevard

Mark Lewis/ Getty

Fort Lauderdale may have once been a spring break mecca of non-stop drinking and partying. But, in recent years, the city has really cleaned up its act. Today, The Strip, better known as Las Olas Boulevard, is no longer home to seedy vendors and questionable people, instead it’s transformed into beach-y walking area with boutique shops, specialty ice cream stores, and tasty restaurants. At night, the area glows with lights, live music, and a young crowd.

Getting There:  Miami to Fort Lauderdale is about 40-minutes. The  Tri-Rail is also available. It leaves from the Miami Airport Station and makes three stops in Fort Lauderdale.

Travel Tip:  During high season, which is usually from Thanksgiving through New Years, the downtown area of Las Olas can get a bit busy with tourists and visitors. Plan accordingly and if you can avoid having a car, you’re better off. Parking can be tough.

Naples: Relax and Unwind

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

When the hustle and bustle of Miami get too much, head west to the relaxing Gulf Coast. Naplesis a low-key city with beautiful homes, a picturesque pier, and lots of white sandy beaches. Enjoy your day in Naples by renting bikes and heading to the pier or playing a round of golf. You’ll find an array of people fishing off the sides, tanning on the sand, or swimming in the warm Gulf water. The downtown area is quaint with cute shops and lots of outdoor eateries. Things close pretty early here, so you’ll know when it’s time to start heading back east.

Getting There:  Head west across I-75 to hit Naples. It’s about a 2-hour drive.  Greyhound  buses are available for about $30 one way.

Travel Tip:  Although Naples is small, it’s a rather affluent area, so if you plan on sticking around till dinner time, make sure you have a nicer outfit packed to change into for the restaurant — unless of course you’re only planning on getting pizza.

Homestead and Redland: Enjoy the Exotic Wine

Elizabeth W. Kearley/Getty Images

The Redland region is right at the entrance to Everglades National Park. The area is filled with exotic fruit orchards, wineries, old Florida charm — you’d never guess you were only about 45 minutes from Miami proper. While in Homestead, visit  Phil’s Berry Farm  or  Knaus Berry Farm and Bakery , they’re down the road from each other and both sell amazing baked goods like monkey bread, guava pies, and pecan rolls. Visit the Cauley Square Historic Railroad Village too if you have the time. The area is a blast into the past of dreamy old Florida, with refurbished railroad cars, tropical gardens, and antique outdoor statues. Of course, a day trip to Redland wouldn’t be complete without a trip to  Schnebly Redland’s Winery . These wines are grape-less and instead are made with more Florida-esque fruits, like mango, avocado, lychee, and passion fruit.

Getting There:  The best way to get to Homestead and the Redlands is driving. Even if it means renting a car for the day, it’s worth it. The drive is about 45-minutes and parking in the are isn’t usually an issue.

Travel Tip:  Don’t leave the Redlands without stopping at  Robert Is Here . The exotic fruit stand right outside of Everglades National Park sells all types of exotic, fresh fruit like persimmons, sapodilla, and lychees. You can also get a combo of pretty much anything in a shake.

Grand Bahama: Swim With Wild Pigs

On the off chance that you get bored of the beautiful Miami beaches, or maybe you are looking for something a little more laid back, a day trip to Grand Bahama or Freeport may be just what you’re looking for. Spend the day relaxing by the clear, blue water or swim with wild pigs in Freeport. Get your Caribbean foo fix in while there, too.

Getting There:  Speedboats and cruises  leave from Miami daily for Grand Bahama. For about $80 one way, you can spend the day in the Bahamas and be home by dinner time. If you book a tour with an all-inclusive cruise group, they will often pick you up at your hotel and bring you to the boat. The trip is about 3 hours long.

Travel Tip:  Since it can get uncomfortable being beach clothes all day, consider buying a  day pass  to one of the resorts in the area. This way you can shower in the locker rooms and change out of wet beach clothes before heading on the ferry home.

Delray Beach: Hit up Atlantic Avenue

Jaimie Tuchman / EyeEm / Getty

No matter your style, you’ll find something you love in Delray Beach. This city is the perfect combination of upscale meets laid back, and Atlantic Avenue has it all. This beachside drag is fun any time of day. Outdoor spaces and fresh food take up the sidewalks during the day, and at night the street comes alive with lit-up palm trees and live music. During the summer and holiday season there are shows at the bandstand by the water.

Getting There:  Head north from Miami for about an hour and you’ll hit Delray. There is a Greyhound bus, although it is probably easiest to rent a car or take an Uber. Parking on Atlantic can get a bit crowded during high season, but there are a couple of municipal lots with 3-hour time limit meters.

Travel Tip:  Atlantic Avenue transforms at night. Start your day by the beach and enjoy lunch at  Boston’s  or  Caffé Luna Rosa . But don’t stay by the water for dinner, head further up the street, past the train tracks, and enjoy the party-scene at  Salt  or  Rocco’s Tacos .

Biscayne National Park: Explore the Underwater World

Blend Images/PBNJ Productions/ Getty

Considered part of the northern Florida Keys, Biscayne National Park is an 173,000-acre national park located about an hour south of Miami. It’s made up of about 95% water and the rest is mangrove forests and small barrier islands. Visiting Biscayne National Park is like jumping into a water wonderland — from eco-adventure snorkeling, fishing, and kayaking through mangroves you’ll forget you’re just an hour out of the bustling city of Miami.

Getting There:  Traffic out of Miami can be heavy, so keep that in mind when planning your trip. Allow extra time when travelling on weekends, holidays or rush hour.

Travel Tip:  For a true Biscayne National Park experience, try  camping on Elliot Key or Boca Chita Key. It’s about $25 a night and includes two tents for up to six people.

Bonita Springs: A Walking Tour Through Old Florida

Bonita Springs is a small coastal town on the west coast of Florida that will ease your stress no matter when you visit. Besides the beautiful beaches, the Bonita Springs Historical Society offers six different themed history tours around the city’s old-Florida downtown. Themes include city landmarks, How Bonita got its name, River Walks, and Land of the Calusa. Plan a tour by visiting the Bonita Springs Historical Society  site .

Getting There:  Bonita Springs is about two hours from Miami. Driving is your best bet.

Travel Tip:  Pack a bathing suit and change of clothes for your day in Bonita Springs — the quaint small town offers a wide range of activities and you want to be prepared for both.

Marco Island: Beachcombing on a Barrier Island

Berkay Alemdar / EyeEm/Getty Images

Imagine spending a day on a white sand beach filled with exotic seashells while pelicans fly overhead. Well, that day is easily attainable on Marco Island . The small barrier island off the coast of Naples doesn’t offer much in the way of activities, but the beaches here are so peaceful you won’t need anything else to do. Make sure to hit up Tiger Tail Beach, it’s one of the most popular beaches in the area and offers visitors amenities like parking, a shaded playground, grills, and a picnic area. Sand Dollar Island is a must visit, too. The island is actually a small tidal lagoon that you can actually walk through because the water is so shallow. It’s a great place for bird watching, too.

Getting There:  Definitely drive here! It’s about two hours west from Miami and it’s easiest to get around the island with your own vehicle.

Travel Tip:  Expect fine dining and upscale shopping. This is definitely an affluent vacation spot, so keep that in mind if you’re traveling on a budget.

Getting Around Miami and Beyond

As you would expect in such a large city, traveling in Miami is pretty easy on public transportation. Affordable transport includes Metrorail , Metromover, and Metrobus.

Metrobus runs more than 95 routes across the city, reaching areas that the rail does not, including Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, Fort Lauderdale, and even the Keys. Miami Beach Bus Route 150 is one of the most affordable airport transfer options.

Fares on Metrorail and Metrobus are reasonably affordable and can be purchased at any station at a ticket vending machine. Alternatively, invest in an Easy Card and reload it via the GO Miami-Dade Transit app.

Miami is a super spread out city connected with fast highways, making it accessible to get around by car. Renting a car is especially beneficial if you want to explore beyond the city center and take day trips from Miami.

You’ll have to deal with a few affordable toll gates ($3 each) to get into and out of the city, as well as some pricey parking. Most street parking is payable via your phone on the PayByPhone app . The most affordable parking structures are municipal garages scattered throughout the town and demarcated with a giant blue ‘P’ sign.

While you’re staying in Miami , you can also use Uber or Lyft to get from A to B, if you don’t want to drive or wait around for public transport.

Half-Day Trips in Miami

If you don’t have too much time to spare, or a full-day trip sounds like too much work, do yourself a favor and add a half-day trip in Miami to your itinerary . This way, you can enjoy the surrounding area’s beauty without having to get up at the crack of dawn and spend hours in transit.

Biscayne National Park

Biscayne Park Florida

One of the top half-day trips in Miami for outdoor enthusiasts is a trip to Biscayne National Park. The park is a tropical wonderland that protects a rare combination of aquatic species, mangrove forests, and coral reefs.

Day trips into the Biscayne Bay are popular for divers, snorkelers, and water sports lovers. Divers are drawn to the Maritime Heritage Trail, an underwater area with impressive diving sites around shipwrecks and coral reeds.

Among the dense mangrove shoreline and clear coral waters, you can admire a diverse variety of wildlife in their natural habitat, including turtles, pelicans, and dolphins.

However, history and archeology fans go nuts for the human history in the area, too, which has evidence of prehistoric indigenous tribes and shipwrecks.

The only way to get to the park is via boat, which is a fun adventure in itself. In fact, 95% of this park is made up of water, so exploring via boat is the best way to do it. Kayak and canoe tours are a great way to see the mangrove forests.

For an adventure-packed half-day Miami day trip, you could also jump on a guided eco-tour at the Dante Fascell Visitor Center, just a 45-minute drive from Downtown Miami.

Suggested trip: Private Sailing Adventure in Biscayne Bay , Biscayne Bay Jet Ski Tour

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale skyline

Although it seems like Fort Lauderdale is a part of Miami, the city is, in fact, its own entity with a ton of fun places to visit and activities to take part in.

Fort Lauderdale is just a 35-minute drive north of downtown Miami and can be accessed via metro in under 45 minutes, making it perfect for a half-day trip in Miami.

A big part of Fort Lauderdale’s attraction is the unique canal and waterway networks that run throughout the city. One of the best ways to explore is on a water taxi, which picks up and drops off passengers at various points around the city.

Fort Lauderdale is also a popular spot to visit for its fourteen beautiful beaches. Unlike Miami’s bustling scene and crowded beaches, Fort Lauderdale offers a relaxing beach setting along attractive promenades that create the perfect backdrop for families and retirees.

Don’t miss out on a stroll through Las Olas Boulevard on your day trip in Miami, which is the city’s central shopping district. Here, you can even hop on a water gondola and cruise through the picturesque waterways from shop to shop.

Suggested trip: Parasailing Adventure from Fort Lauderdale

Boca Raton

Located just a 45-minute drive by car or a 2-hour train ride from downtown Miami, Boca Raton is a nearby city known for its beautiful outdoors and beach culture. As the stomping ground of many celebs, you can experience a level of glitz and glam only comparable to LA’s Beverly Hills.

This posh town is so clean that you will hardly notice a brick out of place. Just a quick loop around the city will show off the perfectly hedged residential gardens, manicured park lawns, and Spanish Revival architecture.

With such an affluent local population, Boca Raton hosts some of the best award-winning restaurants and bars in the state.

Once you’ve spent some time enjoying the food and shopping scene, discover endless activities in Boca Raton . I highly recommend visiting the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. This park situated at the end of Red Reef Park is overflowing with flowers, trees, turtles, and birds and is a beautiful spot to catch a break from the city hustle.

Another hotspot for outdoor lovers is the Daggerwing Nature Center. It’s a great place to relax in the arms of nature and learn about Florida’s native fauna. Bring your kids to the Exhibit Hall, which is packed with exciting live animals and interactive displays.

I would even recommend finding accommodation in Boca Raton for a more peaceful stay, which is just a hop and a skip away from downtown Miami and there’s a ton of great Miami Airbnbs in the area.

Suggested trip: Craft Food Tour in Delray Beach

Full-Day Trips in Miami

If you have more time to spend exploring outside the main attractions in Miami , then head out to the surrounding Keys, nature reserves, and cities on a full-day trip from Miami.

You’ll be able to drive to many of these locations; however, if a guided tour is more your speed, there are plenty of opportunities to join a group tour or charter a private one from the city.

The Everglades National Park

Visit the Everglades National Park

Did you really visit Florida if you didn’t take a trip into the Everglades? Just a 50-minute drive west of the city center, the Everglades National Park is one of the most common (and exciting) day trips from Miami to take in the area.

This important natural reserve covers over 1.5 million hectares of wetland (yes, MILLIONS) and is home to a diverse group of wildlife species that can only be found in this specific area.

It’s the largest subtropical wilderness in the USA and an unparalleled landscape for endangered species like the manatee, the Florida panther, and the American crocodile (more locally referred to as the ‘gator’)

The most iconic way to experience the wetlands is by chartering an airboat. These fan-powered vessels cruise over the marshlands and are the best way to get up close and personal with the local alligators.

Do yourself a favor and book a tour for this trip – the guides are well trained on how to approach the gators and will make sure everyone arrives home with all their limbs still intact.

If you’re traveling with children, the Everglades is a great place to visit for a fun and interactive educational experience.

Suggested trip: 4-Hour Everglades Tour from Miami

Big Pine Key

Big Pine Key

A lot of travelers assume that the Florida Keys need to be booked as a separate holiday from Miami, but this is simply not the case. In fact, the Keys stretch out into the Caribbean Sea just south of the city and are connected to Miami via the beautiful Highway 1, making it possible to visit in a day trip from Miami.

Highway 1 is nicknamed the ‘overseas highway,’ and you’ll see why as soon as you drive on it. It quite literally crosses the oceans on multiple bridges, connecting all the major Keys of Florida.

Big Pine Key is a two-and-a-half-hour drive down Highway 1 from Miami and is one of the best places to visit for undisturbed diving and snorkeling.

The area’s main draw is its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful ocean surroundings, with plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. Fancy a bike ride through the palm trees? How about a swim in the calm blue ocean?

This is also a great place to visit on a day trip from Miami with young kids, who will be happy to put down their digital devices to enjoy some old-fashioned outdoor fun.

The Theatre of the Sea and National Key Deer Park are good options to get the whole family involved. You could even head to Blue Hole to view some of the local alligators.

Why not extend your day trip and spend a night? There are many great vacation rentals outside Miami .

Suggested trip: Private Looe Key Snorkel from Big Pine Key

Marco Island

Marco Island

Just an hour and 45-minute drive from Miami through the Florida Everglades, Marco Island is the largest (and only) developed piece of land in the Ten Thousand Islands region.

As you might expect, Marco Island is home to some of Florida’s most gorgeous beaches. But it’s also a hotspot for golf enthusiasts, with some of the best-golfing greens in the state.

If you’re happy to leave your significant other hitting balls on the golf courses, why not entertain your adrenaline and partake in exciting water sports activities?

The island is surrounded by the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico to one side, and intriguing mangroves on the other, so warm water and calm oceans can be expected.

Perfect for a day trip in Miami, the island really does provide the ideal backdrop for relaxation and adventure. I can recommend a boat or kayaking tour into the Ten Thousand Islands, where you will make landfall on endless uninhabited islands and deserted sand bars.

Tours are abundant once you’re in the area, but it’s always a good idea to book your spot in advance.

Suggested trip: Ten Thousand Islands Kayak Tour

Key Largo

Besides Key West (located much further down Highway 1), Key Largo is undoubtedly the most popular Key to visit in the Miami vicinity. It will take you just over an hour to drive to the town by car, and you can even catch a two-hour bus to the Key.

Key Largo is the first Key along Highway 1, and is naturally the most developed. You might feel like you’ve arrived in a tropical metropolis here. However, the Key still has the quaint charm and relaxing atmosphere of a small town.

Key largo is famed for its vibrant and sometimes rowdy tiki bars, a fun way to enjoy a themed cocktail along the waterfront. This watery paradise is also very popular with divers and snorkelers, who flock to the shores for its shallow waters and abundant sea life.

Novices can easily jump onboard a snorkeling tour, while skilled divers can explore the deeper areas around the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park or the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Make a day of your Miami day trip, pack a packed lunch, and spend some time on one of the gorgeous beaches Key Largo has to offer.

Suggested trip : Key Largo Snorkelling Tour

Cape Coral and Fort Myers

Cape Coral and Fort Myers

Just north of the Ten Thousand Islands and Naples, Fort Myers is a relatively small city with a ton of character. The city, which is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Miami through the gorgeous Everglade National Park, is growing at an incredible rate and is known as the gateway into SouthWest Florida.

The city of Fort Myers has something to offer all sorts of visitors and is widely referred to as one of the most underrated cities in Florida. The city has earned acclaim for its luxury beach resorts and its plethora of restaurant and bar options, from BBQ to Mediterranean cuisine.

If you’re after a coastal adventure with your family or a peaceful day out with your partner, head south of the city to the Cape Coral Canals and explore the Gulf Coast beaches.

During the colder months (for Floridians, at least), these canals are frequented by local manatee populations, making this a great spot to view these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

With an intricate canal system, the best way to experience this area is by boat. Tourists can hop onto a tour or charter a private boat to explore the hundreds of islands in the area. The top islands to visit on a day trip from Miami include Sanibel and Captiva, both known for their abundance of beautiful seashells.

Suggested trip: Cape Coral: The Cape Canal Cruise

Naples Florida Coastline

The gulf side of Florida tends to be less popular with tourists, which makes for quieter beaches and a more authentic experience. Named after the Italian city with the same name, Naples is just a quick two-hour drive from downtown Miami. Naples is a treat to stay in and is most well known for its opulent mansions and private properties.

I’m talking palace-inspired homes with indoor pools and stately entrance halls, most of which occupy prime property on some of the city’s best beaches and lush golf courses. As one of the wealthiest cities in the country, the city draws an affluent crowd.

There is no shortage of high-end shopping here, and visitors can appreciate classy arts and culture museums as well as a sophisticated dining scene. With that being said, it is also a top location for a chilled Miami day trip with your family.

You might be tempted to spend your day visiting the most popular attractions here, but if I can give you any advice, it would be to use this time to enjoy the lesser-known attractions of Naples.

Ditch the main street and head for the Celebration Food Truck Park, which is a happening place with tons of food trucks serving excellent cuisine. This is one of Miami’s food tours you need to experience.

Instead of a day on the busiest beaches, venture to Keewaydin Island for some low-key shelling. Here, you’ll find some exquisite shells to take home in an almost deserted beach setting. The island is only accessible by boat (hence its lack of crowds), so rent a kayak and make a day of this beach adventure.

Suggested trip: Naples: Manatee Sightseeing and Wildlife Boat Tour

Bimini, The Bahamas

Bimini, The Bahamas

Did you know that you can visit the Bahamas on a day trip from Miami? For those prepared to spend an entire day out and about, a boat trip to Bimini is one of the best options for a tropical expedition.

The Bimini Islands are one of the best islands in the Bahamas and are located just 50 miles off the coast of Miami. Jump onboard a high-speed ferry from the Port H of Miami, and you’ll be in tropical paradise within two hours. You might even be super lucky and travel in a convoy with a pod of dolphins!

As the closest Bahamian island to the USA, you can expect Bimini to be pretty tourist-focused and busy. The ferry will drop you off in the heart of Alice Town, which is a small and easily walkable island village worth checking out.

Some tourists visit to enjoy the sheer beauty of the tropical beaches, while others are itching to tick more countries off their bucket list. If you’re up for an adventure, sign up for a diving class, jump into the deep for some shark diving, or take a sip of water from the famous Fountain of Youth.

Snorkeling is the most popular adventure on a day trip in Miami, and for a good reason. The waters are as clear as glass and home to many colorful and diverse fish and crustacean species.

Suggested trip: Bimini Express Ferry and Beach Day Pass

Homestead

Nestled just inland of the Atlantic coastline south of Miami, Homestead is a much-needed small-town escape from its bustling neighboring city.

It’s just forty-five minutes from Miami central by car, and 2 hours and fifteen minutes by public transport, which makes it a good option for a half-day or full-day trip from Miami.

You might even enjoy staying out here for a bit more peace and quiet and instead venturing into Miami when you wish to. Naturally, it’s also the more affordable option compared with Miami.

Take some time to soak up the small-town charm of Homestead, which has a welcoming town center lined with family-run shops and restaurants. Many people visit here en route to the Everglades National Park to the north, or Biscayne National Park to the south, both of which are close to the town.

If you’re a fan of NASCAR, the Homestead-Miami Speedway is located right outside the town. This venue hosts action-packed races year-round and is definitely worth checking out on your Miami day trip.

Suggested trip: Everglades: Birding, Wildlife, and Photography Expedition

West Palm Beach

West Palm Beach Florida

No Miami guide would be complete without mention of West Palm Beach .

Sometimes seen as part of the Greater Miami region, this city is, in fact, an entirely independent place with its own international airport, worthy of its very own guidebook. Just one hour north of the city center, or two hours on public transportation, West Palm Beach is easy and affordable to get to.

The city is best known for its palm tree-lined streets, vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene, and cultural attractions. This city is home to some wonderful attractions that compete well with Miami’s best festivals , events, and theatres.

Although it is a big party town, there is also a lot to do if you’re after a more relaxing experience. If you’re visiting with family, the beaches here are known for being family-friendly and having epic sunsets.

What more could you ask for than calm conditions, warm water, and soft sand for your children to play in? Of course, you could also visit kid-friendly attractions like the Lion Country Safari, Rapids Waterpark, and the Palm Beach Zoo for some educational fun.

Culture seekers will be equally impressed with a visit to the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum and the Norton Museum of Art.

Suggested trip: West Palm Beach Downtown Food Tour

Islamorada

Located bang-smack between Miami and Key West on the Florida Keys , Islamorada is an idyllic beach town home to a tight-knit local community. Most visitors make a day trip from Miami to unwind on the picturesque Anne’s Beach, which is undoubtedly one of the most relaxing spots to lay out a towel for a beach day.

The drive from downtown Miami will take just under two hours, most of which is along Highway 1, where you will pass over uncountable bridges. On the third Thursday of every month, the town hosts a monthly Artwalk where local artists, sculptors, and musicians showcase their work along an iconic stretch of the old highway.

Islamorada is a great place to exercise, especially if you’re a fan of water activities like kayaking, swimming, or canoeing.

The family-owned Theatre of the Sea is arguably the island’s main attraction. It’s a sanctuary for hundreds of bottlenose dolphins, sea lions, and rays with a vision and mission to educate and entertain visitors.

Suggested trip: Islamorada: Private Charter in The Florida Keys

Final Thoughts on Day Trips in Miami

With a big city buzz, relaxing beach scene, and friendly atmosphere, Miami really is the ultimate vacation city. If you’re satisfied by turquoise waters, delicious food, and being surrounded by color, this city will exceed all your expectations.

But there’s only so much you can do in the big city, and I can highly recommend spending a few days exploring the area by taking some day trips from Miami.

It’s impossible to pick one favorite day trip from this list. Still, if I had to choose, I would definitely advise visiting the Bimini Islands in the Bahamas or journeying south into the Florida Keys. There aren’t too many major US cities in the epicenter of the Caribbean, and who doesn’t love a tropical getaway?!

miami day trips

Take a stroll along Juno Beach Pier before exploring the Loggerhead Marine Life Center © Holly Hildreth / Getty Images

Miami may boast some of the best things to see and do in Florida , but it's also a great base for exploring some of the Sunshine State's other highlights.

Maybe a charming town and some unique experiences will take your fancy. Or you feel the need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Miami's busy streets (especially around spring break) to some wide open spaces.

While you may spot the occasional gator wandering out of a canal or have a muscovy duck come pester you at the local park, there much more impressive wildlife encounters beyond the city limits of Miami . No matter what you want out of a day trip from Magic City, we've got you covered.

1. Meet sea turtles in Juno Beach and Jupiter

Travel time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

For one of the best family day trips near Miami, venture north to Juno Beach and visit Loggerhead Marine Life Center , dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of local sea turtles. It's a great space for seeing these magnificent creatures up close.

For more adorable animal encounters, Jupiter's Loxahatchee River Center features interactive exhibits, touch tanks, and live aquatic tanks where visitors can view and learn about local marine ecosystems. You can also head to Blowing Rocks Preserve , where you can see the largest Anastasia limestone shoreline on the Atlantic, blasting saltwater upward of 50 feet into the air.

For family-friendly eats, stop in at Juno Beach Cafe or Jetty's Waterfront Restaurant (the latter of which has a fantastic view of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse ), and Jupiter Donut Factory for a tasty treat.

How to get to Juno Beach and Jupiter from Miami: It's possible to take the TriRail from Miami up to West Palm Beach and make the rest of the journey in a Lyft or cab. But the most convenient option is driving (yours or a rental).

2. Explore coral reefs in three ways in Key Largo

Travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes (driving), 3 hours (public transport)

Key Largo is home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , a mostly underwater park home to brightly colored coral reefs that can be enjoyed in several ways. Get a glimpse via the underwater cam that live-streams into the nature center (and online) or book tickets for their renowned glass-bottom boat tours. Be aware these sell out quickly, but there are other glass-bottom boat tour providers near the park.

Those who prefer a closer look at the reefs are welcome to snorkel or even scuba dive in the park. You can easily spend a full day in Largo, and if you do, grab a seafood meal at a waterfront spot like Sundowners and Snooks, or something tucked away from the crowds like the quirky Mrs. Mac's.

How to get to Key Largo from Miami: If you're anywhere near the Metrorail, it's possible to take it as far south as Dadeland, board the Route 38 bus further south and then transfer to the 301 (which can take you to Key Largo). If you're short on patience, shuttle buses like Greyhound and Flixbus can take you south slightly faster. Driving yourself is the quickest option for those short on time.

3. Have an all-day date in Fort Lauderdale

Travel time: 45 minutes

Less than an hour's journey north from Miami lies Fort Lauderdale – the perfect option for a quick romantic getaway.

Start with a stroll through the lush grounds of the Bonnet House , a quiet sanctuary complete with a butterfly garden. From there, whisper sweet nothings to your beau aboard the Las Olas Gondola before sneaking in a romantic meal at Burlock Coast or The Katherine .

And finally, choose your own adventure: heart-pumping fun at Xtreme Action Park (complete with go-karts, laser tag and escape rooms), live entertainment at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (musicals, plays, ballets and then some), or a bit of gambling, comedy and music at Seminole Hard Rock Casino .

How to get to Fort Lauderdale from Miami: As is the case for most destinations in Florida, having your own vehicle gives you the best flexibility. However, you can visit Fort Lauderdale by booking a ticket on the Tri-Rail or Brightline train and then using a car-share service to get around town.

4. Get away from it all, Everglades style

Travel time: 60 to 90 minutes

This massive national park extends far beyond Miami-Dade County limits, and if you want to get the full experience, you'll need at least a day. Start your day at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center to learn about the park and then walk along some of their nearby paved trails (make sure to try a milkshake from Robert Is Here or some bites at Everglades Gator Grill along the way).

Shark Valley Visitor Center is another beginner-friendly spot – you can rest your legs on a tram tour, hire some bikes and explore the area on two wheels, or even opt for an airboat ride (try Miccosukee Airboats ).

You'll get plenty of opportunities to see alligators, anhingas, turtles and more at either center, but if you want a more immersive experience, drive south to Flamingo, where hiking trails, kayaking, boating, camping and even on-site dining and accommodations ( Flamingo Lodge and Restaurant , should you feel so inclined) can all be found.

How to get to Everglades National Park from Miami: Unfortunately, there are no public transit options to get from Miami to any of the Everglades visitor centers. Depending on traffic, it's just over an hour's drive west of Miami.

5. Explore a Bahamian island via golf cart in Bimini

Travel time: 2 hours and 40 minutes

Whether you've lived in South Florida a while or are just visiting, you may have wondered, "Can I day trip to the Bahamas from Miami?" The answer is yes! The journey is a bit longer than the rest of these day trips, involving a quick journey north to Fort Lauderdale and hopping on a ferry to Bimini.

Once there, you can rent a golf cart to explore all you can during your full day on the island. Snorkel around the wreckage of the Sapona (a concrete ship built during WWI), dine on conch at Joe's Conch Shack or grab a slice at Edith's Pizza, snap photos of the art at the Dolphin House Museum, and bask in the sun at Radio Beach.

You can also rent a day pass at Resorts World Bimini to enjoy their casino and other on-site amenities (but be warned, this might make you want to extend your trip for another day or two).

How to get to Bimini from Miami: If you own a boat (or know someone who does), it's possible to sail to Bimini. If not, take the Brightline train to reach Fort Lauderdale in 40 minutes and then board the Balearia ferry service for quick and easy passage to the island (don't forget to pack your passport).

For our drive times in the guide, we have used Google Maps and set The Miami Dade Courthouse in Downtown Miami as our starting point.  Your drive times may vary depending on your day and hour of travel. Traffic in the area can be unpredictable, so you may want to either leave early or add some extra time to a lot for traffic.

1. Fort Lauderdale

Distance: 30.1 miles

Travel Time: 36 mins

Fort Lauderdale is only an hour from Miami, but it has a much more laid-back and family-friendly vibe. Start with a stroll down Las Olas Boulevard for fabulous shopping in the cute boutiques and award-winning restaurants. It’s also a great place to explore Fort Lauderdale’s nightlife.

Fort Lauderdale boasts seven miles of beaches, with 15 year-round lifeguard stations, making it a safe and family-friendly shoreline. Snorkel, jet ski, paddleboard, and ride waves until you are utterly exhausted! Then, take a beach nap!

If you can’t convince the kids to nap, but you need a break from the sun, head for Butterfly World , where one man’s obsession has turned into more than three acres of aviaries, botanical gardens, and a real butterfly farm! Another option is to go meet the flamingos at Flamingo Gardens. The long-legged pink beauties share their wildlife refuge with bobcats, eagles, otters, and panthers, among other native Florida species. The kids will love it!

Fort Lauderdale is also teeming with outdoor activities.  Head for Hugh Taylor Birch State Park and explore the 180-acre “Central Park” between the coast and the waterways is full of nature trails for hiking and biking. It is also a great place to kayak or canoe the immense system of waterways near Fort Lauderdale or just lounge in a hammock on one of the giant gnarly trees. There are tons of picnic areas and campsites too, should you decide to make a weekend of it! There’s no more relaxing place within the Miami Metro Area.

If you are looking for a more adult day, consider exploring the local breweries on the Greater Fort Lauderdale Ale Trail! Follow your map to visit as many of the 40 local microbreweries and distilleries as you can manage, just remember to do it responsibly!

2. West Palm Beach

Distance: 72.4 miles

Travel Time: 1 hr 14 mins

A less than 2-hour trip north of Miami will land you in West Palm Beach . The serene environment makes for an elegant Miami day trip. It’s a vibrant place with pulsing energy though, and incredible beauty.  Palm-lined avenues, sparkling waterways, and interesting cultural institutions await you in West Palm Beach. West Palm Beach was created as a haven for the rich, by Henry Flagler.  His mansion is now a museum you can visit .

If you have kids in tow, head for Manatee Lagoon where you can learn all about the cows of the sea and watch them play in the lagoon.  It’s best in the winter months. The Cox (South Florida) Science Center & Aquarium is also a fun day for the kiddos.  Along with interactive and educational exhibits on the human brain and an outdoor science trail, the complex also includes a 10,000-gallon aquarium with stingrays and seahorses. The exhibit professionally explains the importance of the coral reef ecosystems of the Atlantic Ocean. There is also a planetarium and mini-golf course, a full day of fun!

Shopping enthusiasts head for Palm Beach Outlets and score some deals with 130 stores to choose from. West Palm Beach is also home to the state’s biggest art museum—the Norton Museum of Art , which boasts works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, among others. There are plenty of attractions in WPB to keep you busy for a week.  We love strolling through the boutiques, restaurants, and the open-air plaza at City Place. Then, of course, there is the infamous Clematis Street with its historic buildings, art galleries, and live music, as well as some stellar antique shops. No matter where you choose to wander in Palm Beach, you can’t go wrong in this ritzy, stunning coastal town.

3. Coral Castle

Distance: 36.3 miles

Travel Time: 41 minutes

There’s a castle in Florida? Yep, yep there is! And it’s a bit of a mystery.  Supposedly, from 1923-1951, a local named Edward Leekskalnin carved 1,000 tons of coral into an elaborate castle and garden. The gate itself weighs 9 tons, but it opens with the push of a finger.  He also carved stone chairs, a telescope, and countless sculptures.

Ed gave guided tours of the Coral Castle for years, proudly charging just 10 cents. So, what’s the mystery?  Well, no one ever saw Ed make any of these things.  They just seemed to appear overnight.  It lead to local folktales about Ed’s mysterious abilities, and Ed did nothing to stop the theories. He would only say that he “used the secrets used to build the pyramids.”

However it got there, Coral Castle is a fun tour and certainly one of the most unique things you will see in the Miami area. If you want to just make a quick stop-in, Coral Castle can easily be toured on your way to the Everglades National Park Visitor Center in nearby Homestead.

4. Islamorada

Distance: 85.0 miles

Travel Time: 1 hr 39 mins

While much of the Florida Keys are too far to drive for a day trip, the small beach community of Islamorada is the exception. It’s less than a 2-hour drive down “Overseas Highway” from Miami, but it is a world away. Go for a swim in the calm waters of Anne’s Beach. Learn everything there is to know about the history of underwater diving and peruse the giant collection of vintage diving gear at the History of Diving Museum , or watch the dolphins and sea lions entertain at the Theater of the Sea .

The community is famous for sport fishing, and boat trips and fish-feeding tours are readily available from multiple vendors. Stop in the Green Turtle Inn , a staple on the island, serving up the Barney’s Fish Sandwich since 1947. It’s been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and it is super tasty! The Florida Keys Brewing Co. is a great place to grab a brew and relax.

On the third Thursday of every month, Islamorada hosts the Artwalk, and Old Highway becomes lined with musicians, jewelry makers, and local artists of every kind!

5. Marathon

Distance: 115.4 miles

Travel Time: 2 hrs 18 mins

For an off-the-beaten-path day trip from Miami, head for often-overlooked Marathon Key. For the kiddos, the Marathon Marin Park offers numerous aquatic exhibits plus four touch tanks. They can get up close and personal with stingrays and nursing sharks, which is super exciting, and the conservation center provides excellent educational opportunities on marine life and conservation.  Also, consider visiting the Turtle Hospital and help in the rehabilitation of rescued sea turtles.

Marathon offers every water sport that a tropical getaway should.  The small island packs a big punch with fishing charters, snorkeling galore, diving, paddleboard rentals, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, and sailing and parasailing adventures.  You can also take to the skies with a romantic helicopter flight over the stunning emerald waters, or go for a vintage tour on the cute land trolley.

After a full day, the quaint restaurants along the waterfront are a foodie’s paradise.  Sink into a comfy chair, with the world’s best view, and chow down on the fresh fare!

6. Bahia Honda State Park

Distance: 130.6 miles

Travel Time: 2 hrs 38 mins

Bahia Key is a truly rejuvenating day trip from Miami.  Crystal clear waters, lapping gently again palm-tree-lined shores, provide the perfect atmosphere for rest and relaxation. The warm breezes are present year-round in Bahia Honda State Park , and the waters are bursting with life.

Take a snorkel and explore the seagrass for Queen Conchs, spiny lobsters, and starfish. If you don’t mind a late drive back, stay on the key for a while after the panoramic sunset and look up! The night sky here is perfectly black, and the stars just blaze differently here. Enjoy an hour or so counting the bright beauties and exploring the beach by moonlight before heading back to the city!

7. Biscayne National Park

Distance: 39.5 miles +

Travel Time: 49 mins drive, plus a 15-minute boat ride

Biscayne Bay is an excellent day trip from Miami for history buffs and water sport enthusiasts.  While you can technically drive to the Dante Fascell Visitor Center on Key Biscayne and it is an informational stop, you can’t see much of the Biscayne National Park from there. The U.S. Park’s Center’s largest marine park is 95 % underwater, so it is best reached by your own boat or a guided boat tour.  The boat ride takes about an hour and 15 mins from the city.

The park is gigantic, covering 173,000 acres and boasting several small islands, coral reefs, mangrove forests, and an immense population of aquatic wildlife. Biscayne Bay is popular for scuba diving, especially along the Maritime Heritage Trail. The historic trail is laced with shipwrecks for the adventurous explorer. Divers, snorkelers, and eco-tour guests will get to meet the natives as well! Crocodiles, sea turtles, the Smalltooth Sawfish, and manatees all inhabit the mangrove forests of the park, and they will be glad to welcome you.

Land lovers will enjoy the hiking trails and sightseeing that the islands offer! Make sure to check out Boca Chita Lighthouse on the key of the same name. The charming, 1930s beauty has a stunning panoramic view of the area! Check out the raised homes in Stiltsville and tour around the largest island in the park, Elliott Key. For an adventurous day outside Miami, you can’t do better than Biscayne Bay.

8. The Bahamas

Distance: 30.1 miles to catch the ferry

Travel Time: 36 mins drive, plus a 3-hour boat ride

The Bahamas is pushing it for a day trip, as you will need to drive to Fort Lauderdale and then hop the ferry, making it around a 3-hour journey, but if you leave early, it’s totally worth it. You have two choices on the Balearia Ferry, the ports of Freeport or Bimini.

Freeport is the main city in Grand Bahama.  You can hit up Deadman’s Reef for some great snorkeling.  Explore the underwater caves at the Lucayan National Park or just lounge on the awesome beaches!

Bimini is the closer of the two ports and is probably a better day trip option.  It also has the benefit of being way less touristy, as there are no cruise ships. Bimini is, simply, Caribbean paradise! It was once home to Ernest Hemingway, as well as the reported location of Ponce de Leon’s famous “fountain of youth.”

Bimini does have a few interesting stops like the Bimini Shark Lab where you can join in on real ocean research on one of the field expeditions . If sharks scare the pants off of you, then head for the innovative Dolphin House , a small museum built from recycled materials.

You will need your passport for this day trip as you will be changing countries.  If this seems daunting to you, don’t worry!  In some ways, it is one of the easiest day trips from Miami. You don’t have to drive or plan an itinerary.  The ferry will drop you off in Alice Town, where you will find stunning beaches and a plethora of seafood shacks to choose from!

Bimini might be one of our favorite day trips on the list.  It’s easy.  It’s stunning, and you get to check off a new country in a day!

9. Key Largo

Distance: 68.9 miles

Travel Time: 1 hr 18 mins

Key Largo is the very first stop along the chain of the Florida Keys. It’s one of the best day trips from Miami for chilling. Beach hammocking is the main pastime here—there’s even a state park with “hammock” in the name (although it’s a hammock of a different kind). You won’t find actual hammocks here, just miles of lush forested trails for hikers and bikers. For the more active traveler, Key Largo won’t disappoint you either, there’s plenty here to fill a day!

Head for the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center and make friends with the almost 100 rescued birds. Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn once filmed a movie here, and you can take a beautiful dinner cruise on the “ African Queen ,” the authentic boat from the movie.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was the first submerged park in the United States. It is loaded with tropical fish and over 80 species of coral. The visitor center has a great aquarium and you can book a glass-bottom boat tour if you don’t feel like putting in all the work to snorkel or scuba. No matter how you view it, the underwater world of Key Largo is stunning!

Distance: 127.1 miles

Travel Time: 2 hrs

The Gulf Coast town of Naples is a luxurious day trip, a straight shot, 2 hours west, of Miami. Plus, you get to drive through the beautiful Everglades. The beaches of Naples are beautiful, and you can escape the crazy crowds of Miami’s South Beach.

Naples has incredible nightlife, so bring some fancy duds and hit 5th Avenue for fancy dining and overpriced drinks. In the daylight, there is plenty of designer clothing and home decor boutiques as well.

Golfers are in heaven in Naples too, with plenty of options to choose from.  Visit the Naples Botanical Gardens for a romantic stroll through manicured gardens, then head for sunset on the Naples Pier. End your evening at the Artis Naples with classical jazz or a comedy show!

11. Everglades National Park

Distance: 9.8 miles

Travel Time: 23 mins

The Everglades is a massive, two-million-acre, wonderland of wilderness in South Central Florida. It’s only 45 mins from Downtown Miami and a must-do day trip! Head for the Shark Valley entrance. Just head west, on I-95, until you are surrounded by swamp!

The Shark Valley Visitor Center is your first stop. If you are a sucker for nature trails, you can walk or bike the 15-mile trail starting at the center. Along the trail, you can enjoy a 65-foot observation tower overlooking the marsh. Guided tours are also available from the visitor center. There are miles of hiking and biking trails throughout the park, but watch out for killer mosquitos and, of course, the Florida Panther.

Kayaking is popular in the park, but beware Burmese Pythons and the American Alligator call these waters home. Land lovers enjoy the easy-to-explore Anhinga Trail, where you will certainly see some of Florida’s terrifying wildlife. If you are an animal lover, there is no better day trip for you than a trip to the wetlands of the Everglades.

Ever heard of “slough slogging?” No? Well, you are about to learn.  Slough slogging gets you right into the action.  Basically, it is a wet hike.  You will join your ranger guide and hop right into the knee-deep water of Shark Valley Slough.  It is the quintessential way to explore the Everglades. Unless, of course, you consider a tour through the Everglades on a classic airboat. This is the best way to get a true grasp of the scale of the enormous park.

The Everglades are like no other national park.  In fact, there is really nowhere in the world like it.  This is a day trip from Miami that is an absolute must for any informed traveler!

12. Big Cypress National Preserve

Distance: 47.3 miles

Travel Time: 5 mins

The Big Cypress National Preserve is the little brother of the Florida Everglades and is essential in the health of the Everglade ecosystem. It’s really just a huge swamp, 729,000 acres of it, to be exact. Why isn’t it just part of the national park then? Well, because locals didn’t want it that way. Access to the swampland would be very restricted if it became part of the national park, so in 1974, it was made a national preserve to protect it but still give access to this plentiful timber for Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes. They preserve their traditional way of life here, using the timber for their heritage homes called “chickees.”

The preserve was actually the first national preserve in the United States, and it’s another place in Florida to see the endangered wildlife that only this part of the country offers. It is an easy place to see explore mangrove forests, see alligators, and explore panther tracks.

The best part about Big Cypress is that it is free!

13. Fort Myers

Distance: 158.3 miles

Travel Time: 2 hrs 24 mins

Fort Myers is located on Florida’s West Coast and was once the home of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.  Popular activities include tours of their historic estates. Along with historic sites, you can visit the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve and get up close and personal with the wild alligators.  It’s over 3,500 acres of wetland ecosystem and is a wonderful small area to see turtles, alligators, and adorable otters.  If you prefer not to be eaten by a wild beast, then check out the Calusa Nature Center, which not only has an awesome planetarium but showcases less-dealy butterflies and birds in its daily aviary shows.

For a one-of-a-kind evening, hop aboard the Murder Mystery Dinner Train . This unique ride takes you on a 40-mile train ride that ends at Colonial Station in Fort Myers. Board the elegant box car and join the mystery.  Decipher the clues and put on your best sleuthing cap to find the murderer.

The trip includes a wonderful five-course dinner, consisting of an appetizer, soup, salad, choice of three entrees, and a dessert, prepared fresh for you onboard the train! There is also a large selection of wine, beer, and cocktails to sharpen your mind. While your food is being prepared,  the live murder mystery show will play out. Three and a half hours later, you will reach your destination, the killer found, and your stomach full!  It’s a fun evening, with fabulous food, and tons of thrills!

Miami has so much to offer, we wouldn't blame you for not wanting to budge the second your feet hit South Beach, the Design District , or Wynwood . Yet if you've made it to this part of Florida, it seems silly not to fit in a few other nearby gems while you're in town. From the lesser-known key of Islamorada to the wetlands of the famous Everglades, to low-key Fort Lauderdale just a half hour away, these three spots make perfect Miami day trips. Read on for our guide to what to see and do in each.

Click the link to read our complete Miami city guide .

Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE

While many Florida-bound travelers find themselves debating whether to stay in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, we have a better question: Why not both? Though the cities are only 30 miles apart, they are distinct. Fort Lauderdale has its own five-star resorts, critically acclaimed restaurants, and iconic cultural institutions, but its vibe is much more laid-back. That is probably why it’s such a popular destination for Miamians looking to “get away” from the city. Think of it as Miami’s more down-to-earth sister city—then visit both to see the difference for yourself.

Sparrow Fort Lauderdale

Sparrow Arrow

Make your way to the top of The Dalmar hotel and you’ll find Sparrow, a sophisticated rooftop bar that offers panoramic views of the city and the sea. If you’re visiting from New York , it’s not unthinkable that you’d bump into someone who shares your block back home. But the bar has gained a massive following of locals too. Gorgeous scenery aside, the cocktails are what draw customers in and keep them coming back. Sparrow uses local ingredients, for its remade classics and inventions alike. For example, the one-of-a-kind A1A: Patron and sherry with celery, lime, jalapeño, and bit of salt on the rim. Rest assured, these drink-makers know what they’re doing and the flavors always come together—no matter how out-there the recipe may sound.

The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale Arrow

Hello, views! While your first inclination when checking into a hotel is usually to go right to your room and make sure it passes muster, walking straight toward the pool area, which overlooks (and overhangs) the ocean, is the first thing you'll want to do here. While most of the hotel’s nearly 200 rooms and suites have some sort of view, it might be just a partial one or a glimpse of the Intracoastal Waterway. That's fine… but you deserve better. Splurge on an oceanfront suite, it's well worth the cost.

Bonnet House Museum Gardens

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens Arrow

Art, history, and the outdoors collide at this stunning, 35-acre beachfront estate-turned-museum. The former home of artists Frederic and Evelyn Barlett gives visitors the chance to step back in time to the early 20th century, when Old Florida architecture ruled the Sunshine State’s skylines and “urban sprawl” wasn’t a thing (the property is home to one of the South Florida’s last native barrier island ecosystems).

Steak 954 restaurant ft. lauderdale

Steak 954 Arrow

Located inside the W Fort Lauderdale , Steak 954 is proof that not all great steakhouses need to have the same old masculine feel. You don’t use the word “steak” in your restaurant’s name unless you know what to do with one. And restaurateur Stephen Starr didn’t get to where he is today by sheer luck. The restaurant has more than 10 types of steak on offer; the 50-day dry-aged bone-in New York strip steak being the oldest, and the 32-ounce, 40-day dry aged porterhouse for two being the most expensive. Dig in!

Islamorada

While most trips down the Overseas Highway have Key West set as the final stop, you don’t need to spend 12 hours in the car to catch a glimpse of the Florida Keys. Instead, hit up Islamorada. Located halfway between Miami and Key West, about 90 minutes from Miami Beach, this picturesque key is known for its fishing, though we’re happy just hand-feeding the hungry tarpon that congregate at Robbie’s Marina .

Key West Hotels The Moorings Village

The Moorings Village Arrow

While some travelers live for the joy of meeting fellow jet-setters when they go anywhere, others prefer to exist in seclusion. Guests of The Moorings Village fall into that latter category. Though it’s located on an 18-acre stretch of waterfront land, the resort only has eight private stand-alone villas, which truly makes it feel like you’ve got the place to yourself. (Not to mention the added privacy provided by more than 800 coconut palms, which works out to about 42.1 trees per villa.) With in-room perks like ocean views, porches with hammocks, king-size beds covered in pillows, and galley kitchens, we wouldn’t blame you if you never wanted to leave. Throw in a private beach, complimentary bicycles, and on-site kayaks, and The Moorings Village really is the next-best option to owning your own oceanfront Keys villa.

Pierre's Miami

Pierre's Arrow

Walking into Pierre’s, which occupies the top floor of a gorgeous house overlooking Florida Bay, it’s easy to see why the restaurant has been a favorite spot for celebration meals and romantic nights out for decades. With its soothing candlelit tables, Pierre’s design aesthetic—much like its menu—takes inspiration from around the world, with beautifully carved entryways and artifacts from Morocco , India, and elsewhere. As with most restaurants in the Keys , the seafood is the standout; start with a chilled seafood tower to sample a little bit of everything.

Default

The Tiki Bar at Cheeca Lodge Arrow

If you go to the Florida Keys and don’t order a rum runner while sitting under a palapa, were you even there? There’s no reason to chance it, really. And The Tiki Bar at Cheeca Lodge is an enviable spot to soak in all the sunny indulgences the Keys have to offer. At any other serious bar, in any other place, the idea of a frozen cocktail is almost laughable. But they’re a popular choice at the Tiki Bar. However, it’s not just about kitsch here; an impressive menu of handcrafted cocktails makes use of the area’s bounty of fresh fruit to mix and muddle into blueberry mojitos or mango mules.

Everglades National Park Florida

Gators and panthers and dolphins, oh my! If you can remember all the way back to your school science class, you may have spent some time talking about the Everglades and how they are North America’s largest wetlands ecosystem. Seeing the park for yourself is another thing altogether. Whether you explore the park on your own at Everglades National Park or hop one of Everglades Safari Park’s airboat tours of this River of Grass, you’ll undoubtedly come away with a genuine appreciation for this magical stretch of unspoiled land.

This image may contain Vegetation Plant Tree Outdoors Nature Land Rainforest Jungle Water Landscape and Shoreline

Everglades National Park Arrow

While it may seem like a totally “touristy” thing to do, it would be a shame to come all the way to Miami and not pay a visit to what is undoubtedly one of the country’s most famous national parks. Occupying 1.5 million prime acres of Southern Florida, these famed wetlands, just an hour from South Beach , are home to hundreds of species of plants and wildlife—many of them endangered. Though you can see much of the park via boat, bike, or tram, you’ll want to be prepared for the experience. That means coming with comfortable shoes, pants and a long-sleeved shirt, sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray, a hat, plenty of water, and lots of curiosity.

Default

Schnebly Redland’s Winery & Brewery Arrow

By now, you surely know whether you prefer red wine or white. What you probably don’t know is whether you prefer it made of passionfruit, coconut, mango, lychee, guava, or avocado. But you’ll find out fast enough at Schnebly, where the claim to fame is wine made with fruit beyond grapes. It’s less than an hour from Miami, but a visit to Schnebly Redland’s Winery & Brewery feels like another world. Grab a seat in the luxurious outdoor garden and discover Miami’s early days as a swampland.

Robbies Marina Miami

Robbie's of Islamorada Arrow

It would be a shame to come to “the sport fishing capital of the world” and not make at least one finned friend. In Islamorada, Robbie’s Marina is the place where all that fishing action goes down. If you’re game to cast a rod and see what happens, the collection of docks is home to a variety of fishing boat tours and charters, including tarpon and shark fishing, offshore sportfishing, and party boat fishing. Boats are captained and guided by total pros who know these waters like no one else. If fishing isn’t your thing, there’s also snorkeling, parasailing, and eco-sunset tours.

Lorelei Restaurant Cabana Bar Key West Florida

Lorelei Restaurant & Cabana Bar Arrow

You came to the Florida Keys for the water views and the sunsets, and Lorelei Restaurant has both, plus the freshest seafood around. The Florida Bay views are pristine and the menu is a perfect mix of tropical dishes (try the conch chowder and smoked fish dip). If colorful cocktails lure you, the rum punch (coconut and dark rums, grenadine, pineapple juice, and orange juice) and Bahama mama (silver, gold, coconut, and 151 rums with pineapple, orange, and Key lime juices) are solid choices.

Default

City Seafood Arrow

This shabby-chic, waterfront seafood joint is one part restaurant and one part seafood market, leaving no guessing game as to where the food on your plate is coming from (or how fresh it is). In a way, it’s about as far from Miami’s flashy food scene as you can get, even if it’s only an hour or so away. But with its dockside dining room, picnic table seating, and meals served up on plastic trays and in baskets, it’s a delightfully rustic throwback to Magic City’s early swampland days.

Fruit Spice Park Miami

Fruit & Spice Park Arrow

Nature lovers and foodies come together at this one-of-a-kind botanical garden in Homestead, which is as much a feast for the taste buds as it is for the eyes. In addition to boundless beauty, these 37 acres feature a unique tropical climate, allowing more than 500 varieties of fruits, vegetables, spices, herbs, and nuts from around the world to grow and thrive here. So it’s not surprising that the park regularly hosts a range of food festivals and events, including the annual Redland Summer Fruit Festival and Redland Fish Fry.

Default

The Ivey House Arrow

This cozy, 18-room bed and breakfast caters specifically to travelers with adventure on the brain. It’s not The Ritz-Carlton , but there’s something kind of quaint about the old-timey Florida feel of it all. Sure, the décor is a little over the top with its bright, tropical jungle prints that seem to want to remind you, “Hey, you’re in Florida!” But somehow it works for The Ivey House, the no-brainer choice if you want a clean and spacious room to come back to after a tiring day in the Everglades .

While there are no end of fun things to keep you busy in Miami , Florida's second-largest city does make for a great base for day trips to explore the southernmost tip of the "Sunshine State."

Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys

From here, you're an easy drive away from other smaller resort towns in Florida . These include ritzy West Palm Beach, just over an hour due north and a lovely drive along the Atlantic shoreline, and the equally posh Naples, two hours due west on the Gulf of Mexico.

And, for those wanting to get away from the beach crowds, Miami is a hop, skip, and a jump to the famous Florida Everglades . This important natural resource covers an area of over 1.5 million acres of wetland and is home to a diverse variety of wildlife.

Miami also sits above another must-visit area: the Florida Keys . An easy drive around Biscayne Bay will take you on one of the most memorable roads anywhere: the Overseas Highway. This stunning 113-mile route starts more or less in Key Largo and follows the gently curving keys all the way to Key West, a tourist destination that is as famous for its tropical climate as it is for its liberal attitudes and lifestyles.

You'll find the best places to visit near the city with our list of the top day trips from Miami, Florida.

Explore Everglades National Park

Beautiful biscayne national park, key west: a tropical island paradise, ritzy palm beach & the palm beaches area, enjoy a cruise to bimini in the bahamas, visit key largo, marathon and the middle keys, head to naples, fort lauderdale, take a drive to boca raton, map of day trips from miami, fl.

Everglades National Park

Until you drive through it, or better still, explore it via an airboat ride or kayak, it's pretty difficult to comprehend the scale of Everglades National Park . Covering an area of more than 800 square miles, the park, like most of Florida, is completely flat, making it even trickier to grasp its size.

Just an hour's drive from downtown Miami, here you'll experience one of the country's most important and fragile habitats, and the country's largest subtropical wilderness. Consisting almost entirely of swampland and marshes, which in turn serve as the state's reservoir, here wildlife enthusiasts are drawn for the chance to spot animal species such as egrets, manatees, alligators, and crocodiles, as well as rarer beasts including Florida panthers.

Any everglade adventure should start with a visit to one of the park's visitor centers, with the main one being the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center in Homestead. In addition to fascinating details of the park's unique ecosystem, including its flora and fauna, you can enjoy fun walks along a number of easy boardwalks set up for animal viewing, along with longer walking trails.

One of the top things to do in the Everglades, however, is to take a high-speed airboat tour. These thrilling vessels can whisk you deep into the wilderness.

Boca Chita Key Lighthouse, Biscayne Bay

One of the top day trips from Miami for outdoor enthusiasts is to Biscayne National Park . It's located a fun boat ride away from downtown Miami, and although it's only accessible by water, it's close enough that you can view the city from here.

The park covers an area of over 173,000 acres and is home to a series of small islands that protect important mangrove forests and coral reefs. It also harbors diverse species of wildlife, including turtles and pelicans, along with larger creatures like dolphins in Biscayne Bay Lagoon itself.

The park is also a popular spot for divers, drawn by the excellent opportunities along the Maritime Heritage Trail. This underwater adventure involves a number of excellent dive sites around old shipwrecks.

For landlubbers, walking trails can be enjoyed that lead to sites like Boca Chita Lighthouse on Boca Chita Key, built in the 1930s and popular for its spectacular views. Other highlights include the Dante Fascell Visitor Center gallery and museum, which offers a variety of programs, including guided eco-tours and art workshops, and the historic, picturesque Jones family home.

Also of interest are the raised homes in Stiltsville, which were built on stilts over the water. Other fun things to do include camping on and hiking around the park's largest island, Elliott Key.

Key West

The drive along the Overseas Highway to Key West, a journey of some 113 miles, is definitely worth the 3.5 hours it takes. Much of this epic drive is on spectacular stretches of bridges, a breathtaking journey that only makes the time spent in the final destination all the more memorable.

There are of course a variety of other great ways to get from Miami to Key West , including by boat or by plane, or as part of an organized tour of this popular destination. But if you do drive, a word of advice: While it's possible to find parking near famous Duval Street, where much of the entertainment and touristy activities occur, it can be hit and miss.

If possible, plan on parking in any one of the larger parking areas outside Key West proper and make use of the frequent shuttle buses. Alternatively, splash out and rent one of the fun electric buggies you'll see zipping about the downtown core.

Start your Key West adventure by exploring the quirky delights of Duval Street and grab a bite at one of the many restaurants and food shacks along this famous stretch of road. A favorite is Frenchie's Café on United Street, just off the south end of Duval and not far from the famous Southernmost Point marker. This authentic French bakery and café does the best breakfasts and pastries.

Colorful cottages in Key West

Other fun things to do in Key West include visiting Ernest Hemingway's former home , now a great museum; the Key West Aquarium ; the excellent Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory ; or possibly even spending time at one of the many great beaches close by .

Best of all, it's possible to catch each of these top points of interest on foot. Walking around Key West has the added benefit of enabling you to explore the colorful Caribbean-inspired architecture that dominates Key West. Finally, be sure to make your way to Mallory Square in time to catch the sunset. Here, you'll find the always entertaining street performers on hand to celebrate the occasion, something that's done here 365 days a year.

Palm Beach

Though it takes a little longer if you take the A1A scenic route and linger awhile at any of the viewpoints along the way, expect to allocate an hour's driving to get to Palm Beach . Set due north of Miami, this fun day trip includes plenty of gawking at the ultra-luxury vacation homes of American millionaires and billionaires.

The beaches here are superb, stretching for miles along the Atlantic. Lined with great resorts and hotels as well as an excellent promenade, there's plenty of space to stretch out and claim a spot for yourself.

After getting your fill of the seafront and attractions, such as Ragtops Motorcars or exploring the nearby Jonathan Dickinson State Park and Hobe Sound National Wildlife Preserve , it's time to explore the great shopping and entertainment available here. For a taste of real opulence, head to Worth Avenue. This ritzy enclave consists of boutique shops, art galleries, excellent restaurants, and yes, and even luxury yacht showrooms.

Be sure to also spend time exploring West Palm Beach . Fun things to do at night in West Palm beach include exploring CityPlace, a vast tourist attraction that is home to great entertainment opportunities, including live music, great dining, and plenty of places to shop. There are also plenty of great West Palm Beach hotels to stay in, too.

Crystal-clear waters in Bimini, The Bahamas

For those prepared to spend a full day or possibly even an overnight stay on a tropical island, an expedition to Bimini is a superb option. One of the top places to visit in the Bahamas , the Bimini islands are just 50 miles off Miami and are closer than the Bahamian capital of Nassau .

Best of all, they can be reached in just under two hours aboard a high-speed Bimini ferry from Miami. It's a delightful journey that's certainly affordable and allows for a full-day's exploration and is well worth it for the fun that awaits when you arrive at the docks at Resorts World Bimini.

Highlights of a visit to Bimini include getting in some deep sea fishing, something the islands have earned a reputation for among sport fishermen, drawn here from afar for international tournaments. Other fun things to do include joining a guided snorkeling adventure or honing your diving skills, with the chance to observe sea life such as dolphins up close.

Another interesting attraction is the Bimini Sharklab. This fascinating marine biology facility provides public access through guided tours. Admission is via a donation, but be sure to call or connect in advance to ensure availability.

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary

Another extremely popular diving spot, Key Largo is just over an hour's drive south of Miami at the north end of the Florida Keys. The big draw for divers here are the extremely shallow waters and the abundance of coral reefs to explore, many within easy reach of the shore, with some Key Largo resorts having direct access to prime diving spots and offering diving instruction packages.

One of the top points of interest for serious divers is the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park . Along with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary , it offers numerous old wrecks and plentiful sea life to experience. These locations are also good for snorkelers, too.

If you're making a day of it, take a picnic lunch and spend some time on dry land enjoying the pleasant beaches, as well as the visitor center with its interesting displays related to area fish habitats. For those who prefer keeping dry, glass-bottom boat tours are also available from Key Largo.

Bahia Honda State Park

Whether you travel a little farther south during your Key Largo day trip or squeeze in a visit on your way to Key west, Marathon in the Middle Keys is worth a stop. In fact, it'd be easy spending the best part of a day exploring its top wildlife-related attractions: the Dolphin Research Center , the Turtle Hospital , and Aquarium Encounters .

The Dolphin Research Center is probably the facility you'll want to spend the most time at as there's so much to see here. In addition to its importance as a rehabilitation center for injured Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, the center does a superb job of educating the public about these incredible creatures through informative talks, and question-and-answer sessions. Best of all, you can partake in unique opportunities to interact with them through feedings and even swim sessions.

And while the dolphins are encouraged to put on displays of their agility, their trainers are quick to point out that they do so voluntarily for a reward, making no two visits quite the same. A number of sea lions are also housed here, along with a great stingray touch tank, and times for displays and feedings are posted clearly, so you can plan your stay.

Rehabilitated turtle at the Turtle Hospital in Marathon

Founded in 1986, the fascinating Turtle Hospital has saved well over 1,500 turtles and is well worth a visit. In addition to learning more about the care and rehabilitation programs, guided tours take you behind the scenes to the hospital with the chance to feed some of its patients.

Afterwards, head over to the nearby Aquarium Encounters attraction for a chance to experience a variety of activities, including feeding and snorkeling tours. Marathon is also a popular sport fishing center, so consider booking an excursion while here. If possible, pay a visit to Bahia Honda State Park for its spectacular natural beaches .

The Naples Pier

Like Palm Beach on the Atlantic side of Florida, the Gulf Coast town of Naples has made a name for itself as a center of luxury lifestyles. An easy two-hour drive through the Everglades from Miami, its beaches, though, are certainly less busy, but equally attractive.

Top things to do on the many excellent beaches in Naples include sunbathing, swimming, paddleboarding, sea kayaking, or simply walking along the golden sands. A variety of parks with ample parking provide change facilities, picnic areas, and, in some cases, pleasant gardens to explore, and the town also boasts a nice pier.

The real fun, though, is dressing up a little as night falls and heading to fancy 5th Avenue. The town's downtown strip, 5th Avenue is a delight to explore as the sun sets over the Gulf of Mexico. You'll find many fine designer clothing stores, boutique shops, art and home décor galleries, and plenty of excellent alfresco dining options.

Also worth a visit if there's time in your day is Marco Island . Just 30 minutes' drive south of Naples, Marco Island is known for its superb beaches , withf perfect sand that's extremely wide in parts, making it a great place to relax awhile without the crowds. You'll also find many excellent hotels and resorts on Marco Island that offer great vacation packages.

The city's beaches, though, are the big draw. There are numerous beaches to explore and enjoy in and around Fort Lauderdale , including the main beach with its wonderful promenade. And, having shed its one-time reputation as a place for college students to congregate during Spring Break, you're now more likely to bump into families and retirees as you wander the lengthy boardwalk.
